The distant memory of tapes getting all tangled up in the cassette recorder when you heard/rewound/fast-forwarded them too many times...
Bless all the digital streaming services where you can play the same song over and over until the world ends without anything ever getting destroyed, except your brain maybe (it's worth it tho).

This marks the first week of Black Music Month.
Declared in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, the month-long observance celebrates the work of Black artists and music industry giants throughout the years.
In honor of the month, here are five Black-owned music and media applications and programs to check out for the start of Black Music Month.
Deepr: Launched recently by software designer Austin Webster and a music industry entertainment attorney with experience working for Motown, Darrell Thompson, Deepr is described as a mix of “Shazam and ImDB.” Led alongside a board made up of award-winning musicians and producers such as Drumma Boy, Teddy Riley and Dallas Austin, the app helps users discover new tracks through instant searches. Once the song is recognized, Deepr provides insight into the creators of the track, providing information on both the musicians and the writers. The app recently launched a new widget that allows users to do a deep dive into songs played in shows right as they’re watching the episode. Deepr is available on both the Google Play store and the Apple Store for download.
Splits App: Designed by Jammber CoFounder and CEO Marcus Cobb, the Splits App helps those who are songwriters with tracking information on their work. Using the app, musicians can track the ownership percentage of each contributing writer on the song. As one of the only rights management services app in stores, the Jammber Splits app also helps users officially register their songs and collect any royalties made from the sales of the track. The app is available on the Apple App Store for download.
Fanbase: Created by the son of the late legendary singer Isaac Hayes, Isaac Hayes III, the Fanbase app is for musicians, influencers, artists and any other person who wants to expand their reach. Created in 2018, the app is a subscription social media platform that works to motivate Black content creators and have their work be rewarded with monetary value to bridge the equity gap on other social media sites. With the Fanbase app, every content creator’s work is guaranteed protection. Celebrities that have already endorsed the app by signing up include Snoop Dogg and Charlamagne Tha God, amongst others. The Fanbase app is available for download on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
The LABZ: Created by founder and CEO Farah Allen, The LABZ is an app that serves multiple purposes with partnerships with companies such as Comcast, Netflix and Amazon. It is a technology platform that allows users to create in an immersive online space. Previously, the app has been used extensively by musicians to collaborate on tracks in real-time.
Breakr: Founded by four Florida A&M University alumni, Ameer Brown, Anthony Brown, Rotimi Omosheyin and Dan Ware, the Breakr music app helps with “direct-to-creator relationships.” The music marketing platform helps artists share their work by connecting with influencers as part of a collaboration. With these campaigns, the app ensures that content creators are getting paid for their work.

unpopular opinion (as in i've never seen anyone else say this), spotify wrapped barely counts for those without premium.
the inability to skip as many songs as they want, to play the specific song they want to hear without having to go through five or six others, and with shuffle constantly on – well, the spotify algorithm likes to play a very small batch of many songs on the playlist, ultimately screwing up their tracking.
it's usually never an accurate depiction of what the listener actually likes. on mine, my top song was one i don't like that much. it just happened to play more due to the algorithm, and with the inability to skip songs, i had no choice but to wait it out to listen to the music i actually want to listen to.
spotify should not have a premium setting. it should be accessible to everyone, because really, the app is great. it's wonderful and it's easy to find songs and grow an audience as a small musician/band, but it's extremely hard when premium separates the experience. spotify is practically unbearable without premium. packed with ads every two songs, the shitty algorithm that makes the "shuffle" option basically useless (though you can't even turn it off because that's a premium feature), and the inability to skip more than 6 songs an hour ON THE APP. if you used up all your 6 and think, "well, i'll just check it later and then skip," you are WRONG. it only counts the hour that you spend listening to music you're not in the mood for until you finally get to the kind of music you want. and by that point, there's no point to using the skips. rinse and repeat.
maybe i'm wrong about this, it's probably good that spotify has a premium setting because their revenue otherwise would plummet, but at least make it more affordable and accessible to those who can't get it because it's $9.99 every month. some people can't afford to pay for that. it's unfair to them that spotify is basically unusable just because they can't pay ten dollars every month for years to listen to music however they want. it should be cheaper to do that. they're a multi-million dollar company, lowering the cost of premium isn't that hard.
spotify wrapped barely counts for anything without premium.

Go to any music app you have that has a “Liked” playlist.
Go to the playlist and play it.
Most bipolar shit ever-
Like it’ll play the most depressing, heart wrenching, earth shattering, tear pulling song ever and then immediately go to “🎶PiNk FlUfFy UnIcOrNs DaNcInG oN rAiNbOwS🎶” or some shit like that

Why is every music app obsessed with radio functionality I don't WANT that
I just want to hit shuffle on my own collection of music, get a queue from that shuffle, and to play songs in the order of that queue.

Add Radiooooo to this list!
It used to all be on a website, but became a mobile app. Its unique design is charming and has a fun vibe.
Radiooooo’s niche is music from around the world going back to 1900. Download the app and go discover some music from 1940s Tunisia. You won’t be disappointed!
some sites for when you’re bored and looking for new music
spotalike creates a playlist based on a song
magicplaylist  creates a playlist based on a song
dubolt  creates a playlist based on an artist
boilthefrog creates a playlist between any two artists
predominant suggests you albums based on cover art color
music-map  suggests similar artists
gnoosic  suggests similar artists and songs

Love when I read an entire paragraph "about" a band on a Music App™️ and still have zero idea what genre they even are, let alone what they sound like. But I can't click on a song! Because then it will become a permanent part of my music algorithm, even if I hate it! So I have to click over to my throw-away account to listen and then go back to my real account to listen again and add to my library if I do like it.
Not that it makes any difference when it would actually be convenient. New release by a band whose every album I have saved to my library since their inception? Not even on the list of "new releases" for me to find it. Eighteen albums from popular music genres I do not and will not ever listen to? Right at the top!
Definitely no enshittification happening here. Nope. Nothing to see. Move along.

Music apps never allow me enough customization options. I want to be able to sort songs by color of album art.

Google Play search for E-Play free music software
Do you mean a specific app or something different?
If it’s the first one, I only found this:
However, I have zero experience with this app, as I only use YouTube music and Spotify (both in free ver.).

I'm working on a blog having to do with Michael Small's score for The Stepford Wives (1975) and find I need to transcribe bits of it.
I transcribe pretty much as well as fish ride bicycles.
Does anyone know of any (preferably not too expensive) apps that can transcribe multi-instrument recordings?
