I am stymied. I have found sith ruins on Dathomir, but they will not open for myself, alone.
It is aggravating. The crest on the door bears the sigil of Darth Revan's empire, and it was their writings which inspired Darth Bane, first of my lineage, to begin the rule of two.
My enthusiasm has stalled. Without a second sith, the ruins refuse me, the door itself will not move by force or by more... physical means. I am disallowed to my inheritance by dint of a betrayal that hasn't even happened yet.
Seething is not a potent enough word. I will have to return after I have found, trained, or resurrected another of my kind.

CAD BANE
it's just edit after edit after edit...
either fans really simp for this character, or there's a lot of aesthetic scenes for this character. either way there's like 2 songs fans use constantly for these edits and at first it's kinda cool, but eventually, you grow sick of these songs. im sorry but they'd probably use mother mother songs :((((
BAIL ORGANA
people will not shut up about how they deserve better
this character went though a lot and fans are BITTER they write a crazy amount of fix it fics and just generally talk about how the character deserves way better.

Oh man, what a tumultuous time to contract Star Wars brainrot! After recovering from a major case of Arcane addiction, BoBF seemed like a good time after how much I had enjoyed The Mandalorian. Now I'm in this surreal situation where the past two weeks have been The Mandalorian Season 2.5 with enough cameos to make a fanfic author blush. To the credit of this week's episode though, I have FALLEN for Cad Bane and must do myself the justice of experiencing him properly in The Clone Wars!
My god I wrote you a super long, super detailed answer with tons of links and gifs and shit and then firefox just hiccuped and I lost everything, including my will to live.
Siiiigh.
Anyway, the short of it is: if you fell for Bane as he is in Bobf, looking like a putty model of an overly flossed fucked up child of the Mouth of Mordor and Nosferatu, then you're in big trouble, because his Clone Wars and Bad Batch appearances are SO fucking good.
King is not even the same character. Ahem, I mean, he actually has a personality in those, he's not a cameo. Since he's not one of the mainline villains, he's also allowed to succeed, making him one of the most efficient baddies in the series. He's a fun loving guy too, even if his definition of fun is to commit crimes and earn good credits... He's genuinely living his best life, smiles and laughs often, acts like a grumpy blue Clint Eastwood... I love him.
And wait until you meet Todo 360, his sassy little short king of a droid, totally not a buttler droid!
Anyway, this wasn't Bane... I refuse. I close my eyes. Where's his hat? Is the hat safe? Is the hat OK? You know, the large hat he literally kills someone for? Where's his toothpick? Where's his attitude? Why is he acting like he's some feather ruffled Pyke? Why is he walking out of the desert? Why is the most expensive bounty hunter in the galaxy being paid to intimidate a bunch of miners in a settlement that isn't even on planetary maps, on a shit-hole planet, where no one even recognises him? Why??
Well, once you're done getting in touch with your inner alien-lover, let me offer you these recs :
This fic by @ashcroft-writes is a Bane/Kenobi fic, but don't run away, it's actually a true galaxy brain pairing. The writing is fantastic, the smut is stellar, but the characterisation, the plot? The worldbuilding???
You come in for Bane smut and snaz, you stay for the incredible story. Like, this fic will cleanse your skin and water your crops. I can't stress this enough. It's something else. It has politics, banter, inner turmoil, action... Did I mention the smut?? Urghhm
This link goes to all 7 of my fics featuring Cad Bane. I had made you little summaries with hyperlinks in them for all of them, to explain better but... I don't have the energy to go over this again and risk getting shafted by the evil gods of technology once more.
In I'll make It Worth Your While (which you can read fandom blind) Cad adopts a kid. She features as an adult in a lot of later stories, either a side character (Cross Over My Heart, A Single Slice of Lemon Cake, and I'll Give You A Reward) or as a main PoV character (In Odd Company).
@spicedrobot also recently tripped and fell face first into the Cad Bane mania, and I totally didn't have my foot out. Very much looking forward to what arises from that tumble ( •̀ ω •́ )✧
Whatever you do, don't miss out on reading the Darth maul comics (and DM me if you want them for zero credits). They're an excellent self contained story, and feature a ton of Cad Bane being... Cad Bane and like
you know
Parting thoughts : I can't believe you claim to have recovered from Arcane addiction. Seriously, what's the trick? I'm still crying in my corner trying to think of other things and getting whipped by my Muse. It's Silco or die in here. You're probably healthier than I am I guess lol

Right so I have a lot of Obi-Wan-centric ideas that will not leave me alone, but here's one that I wanted to write down the start of (and also Maz Kanata deserved more screen time):
Where Obi-Wan gets taught by Maz Kanata to deal with his overwhelming visions, questionably nice-ish Sith and frankly vicious Jedi holocrons, and somehow unexpectedly (or maybe predictably?) falls in love with Jango Fett, the future Mand'alor. Along the way, he royally fucks up the thousand-year-plan-to-rule-the-galaxy made by Darth Bane's idiots, saves the Haat Mando'ade and Mandalore as a whole, and gives the Jedi Order a collective kick in the ass to get their shit together.
----
Obi-Wan Falls while on Melida/Daan, and he's just...furious. Wants to rail at the injustice that he's suffered, at the injustice that the Young had faced, that he had faced on Bandomeer, on Phindar, at the Coruscant Temple itself, at his own Master who didn't even want him in the first place. But at his core, he's still the same even having Fallen, he knows this - he still wants to do good, still wants to help people. It's just...where does he go from here?
----
Obi-Wan Kenobi, cast out from the Order after the latest clusterfuck that was Melida/Daan, somehow ends up at Dex's Diner, alone, with no braid, no 'sabre, and honestly, no idea what to do next. He didn't even realize that he was in the diner that his Master - former Master - had taken him to in their brief time together.
Dex, though, sits across from this pint-sized former-Padawan, remembers that at one time the baby Jedi looked at him and decided that he'd save Dex because it was "the right thing to do " (the baby Jedi's words, not his). And Dex could not let this kid go out on his own, so he goes to his collection of interesting things - which was usually information - that included items which were supplied by a former pirate, who so happened to be quite knowledgeable in weird Force things.
Which is entirely the reason I'm entrusting Ol' Kanata with this kid, Dex thinks, a bit bemused, Though who's to say it's not Maz trusting me to lead Obi-Wan back to her? Considering she probably saw this coming in the first place.
So, he discreetly hands Obi-Wan the things he'd received from Maz for safe-keeping (who had given Dex a knowing look and said she'd be seeing these items again) - which, obviously, include a few holocrons (of slightly questionable nature), many spare credit chips, and (maybe not-so-suprisingly) two khyber and one adegan crystals that sing in the Force loudly enough to startle Obi-Wan from the daze he'd been in since he sat down.
"What's this?" Obi-Wan quietly asks, slightly wary, but intrigued at the hum of the crystals now in his hands.
Dex laughs. "Don't you worry, kid. I got all of this from a reputable source! In fact, that source could be your next stop, as from what I understand you ain't got no one to go back to?" Dex says, not unkindly.
A sharp sting of sorrow cuts Obi-Wan to the core, but he nods, somewhat confused.
"Well then, I can get you on a ship headed out to Takodana to stay with Ol' Kanata - she can get you settled real quick-like," he pauses, shrugs a little, "she'll also be able to help with any funny Force things that your kind get up to, Dark or Light."
The thing is, even only knowing Dex for a short while, Obi-Wan is one hundred percent sure that Dex knows an entirely illegal amount about what happened even if the larger populace remains unaware.
With this knowledge at the forefront of his mind, Obi-Wan is a bit wary. If he were a bit less numb, he'd probably be in tears at the suggestion that there might be someone actually able to help him deal with his recent trip into the well of the Dark. He knew that if someone were truly aware of how far he'd Fallen - because not even the Council knew the extent - then he would be in major karking shit.
But he counted Dex as a friend, and with a little questioning nudge to the Force, knew with certainty that Dex only wanted to help him, even if that meant skirting Republic law.
(He knew he Fell, he knew that he had killed people, though the memories of broken bodies and blood were so blurry that he couldn't remember their faces.
Their screams, on the other hand? Oh, he remembered those.
He couldn't stop remembering those.
A small part of him - the part that had raged at the Republic's refusal to get involved, at Master Jinn's own karking attachment to Master Tahl, at the Elders murdering each other, at the Elders killing their own damned children for the sake of war and death and blood - that part bared sharp teeth in savage triumph at the justice he had handed out and purred at the memory of those screams.)
Shaking himself from the direction his thoughts had taken, he looked at Dex and with a tremor in his voice, asked, "You think she could help me-help me get rid of my Darkness?"
The Besalisk sighed. "Kid, no one can ever truly get rid of their own Darkness. Hells, I know I'm not fully clean anymore and won't ever be," Obi-Wan slumped, and hastily wiped away the frustrated tears that had started to form; Dex leaned down to put one of his hands on Obi-Wan's shoulders, "But that doesn't mean she can't help you. Ol' Kanata knows a thing or two about Light and Dark, and she'll give you a space where you can sort things out for yourself, safely, and away from prying eyes. She knows quite a bit about staying off the Republic's radar, and she can give you a place where you can do all things you need to do. I know you, kid - I know that you won't want to stop helping people."
Dex paused, and said with warning, "It won't be easy, kid. There's all sorts hanging around her den - bounty hunters, smugglers, even Mandos - but she'll do right by you. And I have a sense that you need her. So. Whaddya say?"
The mention of those types of people, of Mandalorians, caused Obi-Wan to pale. But he frowned, opened himself up to the currents of the Force and tried to think this through, because really what choice did he have?
On some level he wanted to say no, to go crawling back to the Jedi Order and beg to be accepted again, to be a Jedi, he knew he was supposed to have been a Jedi Knight, he knew that war was on the horizon and that Darkness clouded the Force and that he needed to do something -
He stopped that thought in it's tracks. Because. Because...what was stopping him from doing something about what was coming? Truly? What was stopping him from being a Jedi? Yes, he wouldn't be a part of the Order, and maybe he wouldn't have a Master, but isn't the Code just a philosophy? Couldn't he strive to do good, to help others, to do as the Force willed on his own?
It was almost heretical. To be a Jedi that didn't bow to the Order. To be a Fallen Jedi that, that...that could work in the Dark to serve the Light.
He could do it, he mused. He could go to this 'Kanata', take the offer of shelter and learn from the artifacts given to him by Dex, learn from those who walked a different path. It would be dangerous, especially if there were Mandalorians involved. Though...if he did this, he wouldn't be a Jedi anymore, would he?
What else did he have to lose? He's already lost his chance at being part of the Order, at being a Padawan, at proving himself to the Masters that thought him too arrogant and brash and un-Jedi-like.
Well, Obi-Wan thought with a bit of self-reproach and no small amount of growing excitement, if I was already un-Jedi-like while actually being in the Jedi Order, then I suppose I really don't have anything to lose, do I?
With a nod of determination, a tight grip on the newly aquired items, and something of a new hope unfurling in is heart, he accepted Dex's offer of a haven with Maz Kanata and her possibly-not-so-legal den of wandering spacers.
Obi-Wan had no idea that in doing so, he changed the course of the galaxy.
(Somewhere, a bit later on, Palpatine feels a shiver of not-quite-unease crawl down his spine. But, he dismisses the absolute absurd idea that something had changed, that something had caused the galaxy to shift to the Light.
If he had looked into it, he would have found that one Maz Kanata, along with a former young Jedi by the name of Obi-Wan Kenobi, had a curious little run-in with the bounty hunter and Mand'alor Jaster Mereel.
Arrogance, as per usual, would be the downfall of the Sith of Bane's Line.)

So small a shell, to hold such power. This is the holocron of Darth Cognus. A lord of the sith in the line of Bane, a student of his in fact. Cognus was known as 'the huntress', such was her skill in stealth and assassination.
The techniques it contains, such as silent movement and the production of senflax poison to disable force connection, are things I already know. I sought this particular holocron out because she, as I, had future sight. I wished to hear her recorded thoughts on the matter.
It was... enlightening.
Now I pass the holocron onto Lady Ventress, in a sort of... trade agreement. I cannot teach her whatever tricks she would-have, might-could learn from the sith she would have trained with originally... but perhaps these techniques will serve her just as well.

Results of Star Wars reading month!
A while ago I mentioned that I had, first accidentally, then on purpose, turned january into a sort of “Star Wars reading month”, meaning that the only things I read this month were Star Wars books, and I read quite a few of those.
Overall it was a pretty fun experience. The quality of the writing and my enjoyment of the stories definitely varied, but most of these were very easy to read, and relatively short, which is why I managed to read so many in such a short period.
I did have some issues, of course. Sometimes the writing felt very weak, some books have very flat characters and some books suffer from problems with how closely they’re stuck following the stories of the movies.
But overall, I think I liked it and I might pick up some more of these later.
Disclaimer: Obi-Wan is my favorite SW character. So there will be a lot of Obi-Wan in this.
So, here are my thoughts on each of these, in the order that i read them in:
(under the cut because this is looong)
Revenge of the Sith (Novelization), by Matthew Woodring Stover (status:Legends)
After a bit of reflection and reading recommendations online, I decided to start with this one. I think it was a good move. RotS is one of my favorite Star Wars movies and the book does a lot to combat its worst issues. The dialogue sounds more natural, more time is spent on exploring Anakin’s messed up state of mind before he falls, and a few nice scenes are added to give extra context to the actions of certain characters. I didn’t love what it did with Dooku and some of the tools it decides to use (this is... or Anakin’s fear dragon, for instance) become repetitive pretty quickly, but all in all I enjoyed this one a lot. The opening with the republic citizens watching the Chancellor’s kidnapping on the holonet was especially nice and really makes me wish we had more of that in the movies themselves.
4.5/5
Master and Apprentice, by Claudia Gray(status: Canon)
Master and Apprentice follows Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan before the events of the saga, at a moment where their relationship as master and padawan is at a crossroads. The story itsel is fairly simple and not that engaging on its own, but what I like about this one is the time it takes to explore these two characters. It’s pretty solid and I liked it, but I wouldn’t call it a must read.
3.5/5
Lost Stars, by Claudia Gray (status: canon)
I think I enjoyed Claudia Gray’s writing much better in this one than in the previous one. Lost Stars is a bit special, in that it doesn’t follow any main characters. Instead, it follows two original characters in their journey through the galaxy at the time of the OT. It’s part love story, part “let’s see the OT through an outside perspective” and it works pretty well. I quite liked the new characters and their friends and I think they fit in pretty well with the established universe. A few of the main characters have cameos, but really, this isn’t their story. I also appreciated some moments where it calls out a few of the absuridities of the OT, such as Lando leading the attack on death star II and Vader chasing after the falcon so obsessively, both of which look extremely weird from an outside perspective. The only thing I don’t really like is that the story feels really restricted by the OT canon, so you can kind of guess where everything is going after a certain point.
4/5
Kenobi, by John Jackson Miller (status: legends)
Obi-Wan has adventures after arriving on Tattooine when he really, really would rather not get involved. I absolutely loved this one. I liked the writing, I liked Obi-Wan’s character, I liked the new characters (although I had trouble keeping track at first), and I liked the plot. It has a slower start than most of the others here, but it definitely pays off. Without going into too much detail, I particularly appreciated Obi-Wan’s issues with having to let go of the “let’s help everyone” jedi mentality, the exploration of the Tusken raiders, and the fact that it didn’t actually focus on Luke and the Lars’ at all, which I admit I had rather been dreading.
5/5, and my favorite of the bunch
Darth Plagueis, by James Luceno (status legends)
This one started off really strong, but then fell a little flat by the end. It tells the story of Plagueis’ rise as sith lord, and later his relationship with Palpatine. I enjoyed Plagueis’ character and the writing was pretty solid throughout. all the political machinations were hard to keep track of at first, but after some time and a little help from wookiepedia my brain began to make sense of things. Its strongest moment by far is an event halfway through the book when the two sith lords are attacked by another faction that shows us both their ruthlessness and the fact that they can, in fact, be caught off guard. Plagueis is wonderfully sinister, but Palpatine comes off as even more coldhearted, which is fitting. The one thing I didn’t like, and the reason I felt the ending was a little flat, is that it tries too hard to tie into the Phantom Menace at the end. I think the story would have benefitted from letting Plagueis die earlier and not have its final events tied up in the movie’s plot.
4.5/5, and my second favorite
The Rising Force (Jedi Apprentice #1), by David Wolverton (status:legends)
This one is aimed at kids, and it shows. But because I can never get enough obi-Wan, I decided to read it anyway. It focuses on young Obi-Wan, at risk of not being able to become a jedi knight, and his difficult first meetings with Qui-Gon, and the little adventure they accidentally end up on. As a kids’ book, the writing is easy even by SW standards, and that’s saying something. Like, an 8 year old could probably read this just fine. The story is also pretty simplistic and works on building the foundations for the later development of these characters. It’s the first in a pretty long series, so it doesn’t get that far, but it was fun enough, I guess.
3/5
Heir to the Empire (#1 in Thrawn trilogy), by Timothy Zahn (status: legends)
I had high expectations going into this thing and none of them were met. I’ve read a bit on the side, and I can appreciate how it was an important story for the franchise as a whole, but it really did nothing for me. This is partly, I think, because my expectations were so high in the first place. Everyone seems to think that the Thrawn trilogy is the best thing to ever happen to Star Wars, but from my impressions of this first book it was just...meh. It takes place in the years following the fall of the empire, where the new republic faces threats from the imperial remnants, one of which is lead by Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn as a character is adored by the fandom, and I really don’t get it. He’s dispassionate (pseudo)rational, supposedly very Smart and apparently can predict how people will act because he studies their country’s art (which...stinks of 19th century “scientists” measuring skulls, but whatever let’s pretend this doesn’t bother us). He doesn’t really have any particular outstanding character traits outside of this. What I’m trying to get to, is he’s a bit of a Sue and not very interesting to read about. Then there’s Mara Jade, who is also introduced in this, and who I also didn’t particularly like, but yeah. The story told in this is actually pretty short - the trio is having issues, Luke get’s captured for a while and then there’s a big battle at the end. It’s fine, there’s nothing particularly wrong with it, the writing is ok, and maybe the characters are a little flat sometimes, but overall it’s ok. I just don’t get why people adore this so much. Personally, I’ve no interest in the rest of the trilogy.

Path of Destruction (#1 in Bane trilogy), by Drew Karpyshyn (status: legends)
This one tells the story of the rise of Darth Bane, he who would establish the rule of two for the Sith. The early parts of this felt quite interesting, and I liked how Bane’s character was different from what we usually get in SW, especially in terms of background. But once the story gets to the sith academy, it just stalls. There’s a lot of back and forth between Bane, the masters and the other apprentices, a lot of musings from Bane on the nature of the dark side, and theoretically all this should work, but at some point during this part of the story I just stopped caring about any of the characters. Maybe it’s because I find the whole dark side philosophy thing quite silly, or maybe I just didn’t find the writing all that engaging, or maybe it was that I already knew what was coming so much of this felt like padding. In any case, it’s a decent enough read, but doesn’t make it past meh for me.
