Till the new millennia & the few yrs just preceding, that is, (barring a very few modern exceptions, decent enough to mingle with the greats, & included herein), with its commercially driven sloth in keeping the beating of the dead horse on, till viewers & makers themselves lost all sense of carriage, motion, plan, direction, or vision, birthed a collective numbing & dumbing down of societal viewership consciousness, in front of our very eyes – a veritable genetic mutation of sorts of collective taste, just like that.

So here we are at Indies - remembering the old glorious normal, for pleasure & posterity - & for our future generations deserve to have a semblance of sense of our once golden cultural humanity. For no generation, howsoever materially satiated, can thrive w/o deeper hope !

It was the post ‘Hum Log’ phase and we stepped in to the mesmerizing world of ‘soaps’ called ‘Buniyaad’, ‘Sri kaant’, ‘Ye jo hai zeendagi’, ‘Rajani’, ‘Nukkad’, ‘ Wagle ki  duniya’, Mungerilal ke Haseen Sapne” and many others. Suddenly we had a wholesome platter of entertainment at our disposal.

Programmes such as ‘Chitrahaar’(based on Hindi film songs), ‘Phul khile hain gulshan gulshan’ and ‘Gul Gulshan Gulfaam’ (based on interviews of celebrities), “Darpan’(based on short stories),  ‘Sandip Ray Presents’(based on short stories written by Satayjit Ray), ‘Tamas’(a telefilm directed by Govind Nihalni, based on the partition of India), ‘Yatra’ (directed by Shyam Benegal), ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ (based on Discovery of India written by Jawaharlal Nehru) and cultural show ‘Surabhi’ appealed to all. Although I was way beyond my childhood, still I enjoyed shows such as ‘Didi’s comedy show’, ‘Malgudi Days’, ‘Tenali Rama’, ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’, ‘Karamchand’, ’Vikram aur Betaal’,  ‘Katha Sagaar’, ‘He man and the master of the universe’, ‘Faerie Tale Theatre’, ‘Sherlock Homes’ and Disney cartoon shows such as  ‘Mickey & Donald’, ‘Denice the menace’.

During my early teens, my favorite English comic character was Phantom. He was the superhero of our times. I was fascinated by his wife Diana’s hourglass figure and gorgeous mane. Their life at the Skull Cave at the Deep Woods in Bangalla was a fantasy world for me.

Countdown shows such as Superhit Muqabla’,  where viewer’s polls were sent by post card in place of today’s ‘sms’ or ‘Tweets’ on hashtags, comedy shows such as ‘Jaspal Bhatti’s Flop Show’ and ‘Ulta Pulta’, ‘Zabaan Sambhalke’, ‘Tu Tu Main Main’, ‘Srimaan Sreemati’, ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’ were thorough entertainers whereas  ‘Circus’ and ‘Fauji’ (launching Shahrukh Khan), ‘Shaanti’(launching the spaghetti girl Mandira Bedi), ‘Swabhimaan’ , ‘Airhostess’(launching slim and svelte  Kitu Gidwani) and ‘Lifeline’ etc introduced us to the second generation genre of Indian TV shows.

Raghubir Yadav is a film, stage and television actor, music composer, singer and set designer. He made his film debut with Massey Sahib (1985) in which Yadav played the title role. Incidentally, he has never won the National Award but two International Awards as Best Actor for Massey Sahib, FIPRESCI Critic's Award, Venice Film Festival, 1986 and the Best Actor Silver Peacock, IIFI, 1987. The film also starred the noted writer and social activist, Arundhati Roy. Raghuvir Yadav is an alumnus of the 1977 batch at the National School of Drama, New Delhi.

Theatre Yadav performed as an actor and singer in over 70 plays and about 2500 shows, traveling in caravans, living in tents and performing on makeshift stages in villages, towns, and cities of India with the Parsi Theatre Company (1967–1973). He was with the Rangoli Puppet Theatre, Lucknow (1973–1974), performing with glove puppets. At the National School of Drama Repertory (1977–1986), he acted in about 40 plays in over 2000 shows. He has also contributed to music, sets, costumes, and masks.

Film He was seen in many milestone films in the coming decades. Three films that he has acted in have received Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film (Salaam Bombay!, Lagaan, and Water). Raghubir Yadav is the only Indian actor to have received the Silver Peacock Best Actor Award, at the International Film Festival of India. His most acclaimed role was as the drug-addicted "Chillum" in Salaam Bombay! (1988). He was acted in Firaaq In 2011 he plays the lead role in the film Dear Friend Hitler which takes its name from two letters Mahatma Gandhi wrote Adolf Hitler, in 1939 immediately before World War II and Christmas Eve 1940 after the war had started, to prevent and to stop the war.

Television Yadav started his television career with the TV series Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne (1990), playing the lead character 'Mungerilal'. Later he played the roles of Haji Nasruddin the series Mulla Nasiruddin and the lead in Chacha Chaudhary. He also played the lead role for BI T.V. in Arjun Pandit.
