Mulcahy Music Monday
In "Your Hit Parade" (s06e18) Potter: "Ah, "May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You. " They're playing your song, Father." Mulcahy: "Well, actually, I requested 'Tico, Tico'. But this is very nice too."
"The song “Tico-Tico,” an enduring international hit, passed the century mark two years ago; it was composed in 1917 by Zequinha de Abreu, a Portuguese émigré to Brazil." Ethel Smith played "Tico-Tico" on the Hammond organ in the 1944 film Bathing Beauty (which I like to think may have been what Mulcahy was thinking of).
But he could also have been thinking of the 1947 Marx Brothers movie Copacabana, the “Brazilian Bombshell” Carmen Miranda sang it opposite Groucho Marx.
"But in Brazilian music, which does not exile pop forms from classical traditions, “Tico-Tico” is actually a choro — a song form that typically shrugs off misfortune with good humor, good tunes and fast tempos. The title refers to a bird that got into the cornmeal, but we can imagine the same kind of grousing over morning coffee at the office. “Tico-Tico”’s catchy, emphatically syncopated rhythm is irresistible, and still lends itself to virtuosic arrangements for every conceivable solo instrument and ensemble, from finger-tangling guitar transcriptions to full-on symphonic arrangements. As with Viennese waltzes, the critical challenge is to capture that elusive rhythm with orchestral precision." Berlin Philharmonic
Also, just for Charles Emerson Winchester III: "Theo Degler (accordion) and Robert Frank (piano) play their version of Zequinha de Abreu's famous piece 'Tico-Tico no Fubá'.
We so seldom hear about Father Mulcahy's actual preferences on music - the nearest we have other than "Tico-Tico" is the Korean war song he composed in "Dear Uncle Abul" (s08e12)

i'm at work but someone dare me when I'm off to write the cas/hawkeye/margaret (dean/cas & hawkeye/margaret) time-traveling post 15x19 ptsd fic that I suddenly very much want to write
#writing ref#listen cas comes back from the empty in the wrong place and time#and his time in the empty has NOT been kind to him#and he is holding on by a THREAD.#and he walks into the 4077 basically shellshocked#and he doesn't have his angelic healing anymore but he DOES know how to handle surgery#so they kind of assume he's been separated from his unit and just. kind of. keep him.#oh potter has radar circulate his info so they can try to find his unit. but in the meantime?#in the meantime he sleeps in the swamp and listens to classical music with charles and listens to bj's stories about erin & peg#he listens to klinger talk about chicago and listens to radar talk about the family farm#he listens to the nurses talk about their plans for after the war and he listens to margaret and hawkeye bicker#he sits quietly with potter while he paints#and he speaks with mulcahy. oh with mulcahy he talks and talks and talks.#terrified that this man - this genuinely good man - will someday give a yes where he should give a no. because he's shining with it.#but as the days stretch and his nightmares show no signs of diminishing and his silence grows and his surgical skills continue to impress#margaret and hawkeye - who spend the most time watching him in surgery - decide to stage an intervention.#at roughly the same point sidney is finally free to come down to the 4077#and when sidney manages to pull at least some of the tangled mess of isolation and touch-starved and insomnia and heartbreak from cas#hawkeye and margaret find it natural to want to. soothe. as they so often have soothed each other.#and they aren't thinking /that way/ per se. but then dean's name comes from cas' mouth. a man's name. and things. progress.#and cas knows he can't stay here forever#but hawkeye and margaret won't stay here forever either. none of them will.#this is a bubble of time. endless and yet already over.#and cas can't breathe most days let alone face dean - dean who doesn't - dean who won't -#cas has scars on both of his bodies. his wings and this human skin. the empty wasn't. kind. as he knew going in.#but he's had so little kindness in his life.#he'll go back because he has to face it. has to face him. but for a little while. until he can find a way (flightless. powerless) home.#he'll stay.#mash#spn

♫ Total Eclipse Of The Heart ♫
I haven’t played this one since March 2019, so when Clive mentioned last night that it is his favourite by Bonnie Tyler and said it was “OTT” (I had to think on that one for a minute to come up with ‘over the top’) I figured that gave me a good excuse to redux it this morning! This song from 1983, recorded by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, became Tyler’s biggest career hit.  The song peaked at #1 in…

Morse hears footfall behind him and he turns, noticing the kind eyes and welcoming face of the priest. He shouldn’t be as surprised as he finds himself— this is a chapel, it’s common practice that a clergyman comes with it— but it is half three in the morning.
“I’m sorry to have troubled you,” he begins. “I don’t need… that is, I don’t really go in for this sort of thing.” Endeavour at least has the good graces to be genuinely apologetic as he looks to @4o77th , but he finds his attention drawn back to the chancel almost immediately after, running his hands up and down the lengths of his thighs as if everything wrong could be remedied as easily as sweaty palms.
“…Not for want of trying, that is,” he finds himself continuing. “My mother took me quite often to her meeting house. Thought it would help, I suppose. ‘Still your mind,’ she’d say… never got the knack.” He’s quiet for a moment.
“The acoustics seem good.”

Duran Duran - The Wild Boys 1984
The idea for the song came from Duran Duran's longtime video director Russell Mulcahy, who wanted to make a full-length feature film based on the 1971 novel The Wild Boys: A Book of the Dead by William S. Burroughs. He suggested that the band might create a modern soundtrack for the film in the same way that Queen would later provide a rock soundtrack for Mulcahy's 1986 film Highlander. "The Wild Boys" became one of the band's highest-charting singles, peaking at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, and in several European countries, while reaching the top spot on the US Cash Box Top Singles chart and in Germany and South Africa. It also became the band's highest-peaking single in Australia, reaching number three.
The music video for "The Wild Boys" showcased a part of the concert film Arena (An Absurd Notion), released on vhs and broadcast on MTV. The cost totalled over one million pounds, a staggering sum for music videos at the time, but then the entire production of it is phenomenal and truly innovative for its time. Actor Milo O'Shea reprised his role as the evil Dr. Durand Durand from the 1968 film Barbarella. "The Wild Boys" was named British Video of the Year at the 1985 Brit Awards. Total amount of yes votes is 58,7%

taking a short break from writing to tell you all i love having MASH conspiracies that dont matter and i dont care to prove.
episode where hawkeye hurts his finger and it plays 0% into any of the plot was because alan alda hurt his finger and they had to roll with it.
instances where hawkeye juggles or does a handstand happened solely because alan alda went 'guys watch this' and then did it.
hawkeye singing all the time because alan alda has a musical background and he just kept doing shit like that so the let him have it.
anytime bj or hawk wear something that isnt their usual attire [like the blue/purple cardigan, and the flannel that shows up like twice], its because thats what they showed up in and the costume department said 'hey that looks good on you. wear it for the episode today'
bj's got converse because mike farrells bigass feet meant they didnt have any other shoes on-hand that were the right size [other than boots] so they just told him to wear his everyday shoes in the show.
bj's robe fits so horribly because its actually his wife's robe and shes 5'1", as mentioned, so theres a reason why man has his hams and calves out all the time cause otherwise its just mike farrell being too large again.
fr mulcahy's cross gloves [croves, if you will] and cross socks [crocks, if you will] are just the beginning and he has many other things adorned with crosses for fun, such as undershirts and briefs.
hawkeye and a partner, usually bj, are always winding the same red yarn but hes never knitting it, so hawkeye is unwinding it every night penelope-with-the-suitors style so that they constantly have something to do to break the boredom and hangout.
hawkeye is afraid of mice, but not guinea pigs, so its not all rodents, ergo it might have been a dissection in school that put him off the little bastards
thats all off the top of my head but yeah. head cannons, conspiracies, i dont care i had to get em OUT

Any Henry Blake headcanons you're dying to share?
yes !!!
— henry’s fishing hat was given to him by his kids for father’s day . it was more or less supposed to be a gag gift orchestrated by loraine , but wearing it always makes him think of his daughter’s big smile when she put it on his head
— he’s scarily good at poker , when he’s sober . that’s why hawktrap usually has him drinking when he joins a game .
— he’s a big dog guy . back home whenever the kids would start asking for a dog again he’d join them in trying to wear down loraine into giving in , he stopped when he was threatened with sleeping on the couch LMFAO
— loraine calls him embarrassing pet names around his friends and he blushes and says “ aw , honey , not in front of the guys “
— the reason we don’t really see radar driving in the early episodes is because his driving is god awful and henry has to teach him how to drive better
— henry also watches radar’s teddy bear for him if radar isn’t around / doesn’t have access to it for whatever reason . he says goodnight to teddy , tucks it in and everything
— most of the liquor in his office is stuff hawktrap brings him back from tokyo when they go on leave
— he can fall asleep literally anywhere . he also talks in his sleep , hawktrap has been known to hold whole conversations with sleeping henry ( while laughing their asses off )
— he likes country music idk what to tell y’all . specifically cowboy ballads .
— back home they have his picture on the wall of a local bar amongst others . when the news of his death reaches home they move the picture behind the bar where everyone can see it . his old friends toast him when they come in for a drink .
— he tried doing standup one night in the mess tent . he promptly got boo’d out and never did it again .
— he had a drunken ceremony where hawkeye and trapper made him an honorary swamp rat .
— sometimes klinger comes to henry’s tent to show him outfits he’s unsure about . henry yay or nays them .
— one time father mulcahy asks him why he doesn’t usually attend sunday services and henry tells him , quote , “ you wouldn’t want me , father . if there was one thing i was known for back home it was falling asleep in the pew “
— henry started the tradition of the blakes throwing big christmas / new years / other holiday parties . he invites his fellow doctors and patients he’d become friends with . the blake parties become quite infamous

KIN and Lies We Tell lead Irish Film and Television Academy Award nominations
Tumblr media
Charlie Cox and Clare Dunne in KIN
RTÉ crime drama KIN and psychological thriller Lies We Tell lead this year's IFTA nominations.
The Irish Film and Television Academy Awards will take place on Saturday 20 April with winners being announced across 28 different categories celebrating the best of Irish film and TV drama. The Awards will be hosted for the first time by Emmy-winning broadcaster Baz Ashmawy.
RTÉ's KIN, which follows the notorious Kinsella family, has received 11 drama nominations including Best Drama, as well as Lead Actor for Francis Magee and Sam Keeley, and Lead Actress for Clare Dunne.
Tumblr media
Michael Smiley plays a father on the edge in Obituary
Magee and Keeley are up against some strong competition with Michael Smiley (Obituary), Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) Daryl McCormack (The Woman in the Wall) also nominated. While Dunne competes with Sharon Horgan (Best Interests), Niamh Algar (Malpractice), Elva Trill (Northern Lights), Siobhán Cullen (Obituary) and Caitríona Balfe (Outlander).
The Best Drama category showcases a wealth of homegrown talent with Blue Lights, Hidden Assets, Northern Lights, Obituary and The Woman in the Wall also vying for the coveted award.
Tumblr media
Agnes O'Casey stars in Lies We Tell
Over in the film categories Lisa Mulcahy’s gothic Irish tale, Lies We Tell, has received a whopping 13 nominations including Best Film, Lead Actor for David Wilmot, Lead Actress for Agnes O’Casey and Best Director for Mulcahy.
It will be a hotly contested battle for the Lead Actor award with Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Andrew Scott (All Of Us Strangers), Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), Barry Ward (That We May Face The Rising Sun) and Pierce Brosnan (The Last Rifleman) also in the running.
Tumblr media
Jessie Buckey stars in the romantic drama movie Fingernails
The same goes for the Lead Actress category which sees O'Casey compete with Jessie Buckley (Fingernails), Eve Hewson (Flora and Son), Saoirse Ronan (Foe), Bríd Brennan (My Sailor, My Love) and Geraldine McAlinden (Verdigris).
Also nominated for Best Film are pharmaceutical horror-thriller Double Blind, John Carney's Flora and Son, quirky sci-fi fable LOLA, John McGahern's That They May Face The Rising Sun and Patricia Kelly's debut feature film, Verdigris.
Stephen Rea will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's ceremony. The award will be presented to the Oscar-nominated actor for his outstanding contribution to the Irish and international screen industry over a career that has spanned five decades.
Responding to the Lifetime Achievement Award announcement, Rea said: "So much of Irish culture has been recovered and reimagined. Music, language, literature, theatre.
Tumblr media
Stephen Rea will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award
"And cinema can be added to that list because of the special energy of John Boorman who produced Neil Jordan's first film Angel. And to my astonishment, my first film too. Neil thrust the script and a saxophone into my hands and suddenly I was in the movies. Well, one really original movie, which was at the beginning of a new confidence in Irish cinema.
"And now many films later, IFTA have, equally surprisingly, offered me a Lifetime Achievement Award. A lifetime of collaboration with the most generous and creative artists you could ever work with. And hang out with. Thanks to all of them. Thank you IFTA."

POTO videos
Earl Carpenter, Rachel Barrell, David Shannon, Wendy Ferguson, David Lawrence (u/s), Sam Hiller, Emily Harvey (u/s), Heidi Ann O'Brien, Rohan Tickell January 2006 VOB format.  If you want to see Earl in London right now but can't... this video is the best quality overall that features him, and Rachel Barrell is a fantastic Christine - one of my favorites in the role. https://mega.nz/folder/u09GQKyR#gjNHj4Letd9YInTsuLowjA Gary Mauer, Elizabeth Southard, Jim Weitzer, Kim Stengel, John Jellison, DC Anderson, Patti Davidson-Gorbea, Kate Wray, John Whitney April 6, 2006; Dallas VOB format.  For my Eristine moots (I see you!): Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard were (and as far as I know, still are) married while performing as the Phantom and Christine, and you thought Ramin and Sierra's chemistry was off the charts, think again. https://mega.nz/folder/PtExxS5A#D4yyf2g_lXoN-cIDPkMU2Q Anthony Crivello, Kristi Holden, Andrew Ragone, Geena Jeffries Mattox, John Leslie Wolfe, Lawson Skala, Tina Walsh, Brianne Kelly Morgan, Larry Wayne Morbitt August 8, 2008; Las Vegas VOB format. This is the Las Vegas Spectacular production, which is abriged compared to the original but totally worth seeing. If you want to understand why I love Meg Giry so much, Brianne Kelly Morgan is one of the best I've ever seen in the role. Also, if you’re meh about Raoul... with Andrew Ragone, think again. He’s one of the most Superman/Clark Kent Raouls I’ve seen. And I really like Kristi Holden’s Leroux-esque Christine too.  https://mega.nz/folder/Sh1zxSAB#twtXau8Y8pd_L9tMQLa4Mg Jeremy Stolle (u/s), Samantha Hill, Greg Mills (u/s), Michele McConnell, Tim Jerome, Richard Poole (u/s), Ellen Harvey, Kara Klein, Christian Sebek March 9, 2013 VOB format. Missing part of Act 1 (‘Stranger Than You Dreamt It’ to Il Muto), but otherwise complete. This is one of the best trios I've seen on Broadway, and Samantha Hill is just a fantastic Christine overall. https://mega.nz/folder/y1slyJRD#OP1Tp5Cj_fMk9LbAWJMqAA Tomas Ambt Kofod, Sibylle Glosted, Christian Lund, Louise Fribo, Carl Christian Rasmussen, Sebastian Harris, Elisabeth Halling, Imogen-Lilly Ash, Rasmus Jupin March 2019; Copenhagen VOB format. This one is more recent, but given it's been uploaded on YouTube, I guess it's fine to gift it (again, if you’re the master and you want me to remove this, please let me know). This one has one of the best casts ever caught on tape. Seriously. Everyone in this is a star. https://mega.nz/folder/q40hTagI#Zui14MWo-F2YSQ0gNdaL6Q

Sweeney Todd
2000 Concert Cast Recording George Hearn, Patti LuPone, Davis Gaines, Heidi Grant Murphy, Paul Plishka, Audra McDonald, Standford Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris, John Aler Pretty sure this isn't on Spotify, which is a real shame given its cast. So enjoy! EDIT: Someone pointed out to me that the recording is incomplete - probably a result of the Great Hardware Crash of 2016, so until I get the full version, this will probably stay incomplete. Sorry about that! https://www.mediafire.com/file/ywoiqe5bnlzr7bs/Sweeney_Todd_2000_New_York_Concert_Cast.rar/file
