Ch 58: Eyes of the Dragon
This chapter starts with three lead pages before the title page, which I think is a new record for UU. Tozuka's like HERE TAKE THIS FLASHBACK, TOO! WE CAN MAKE IT FIT!
He really makes the best appetizers, too, bc Shen's origin story is guaranteed to be interesting. Unlike some of the other Negators, his life was already rough even before his ability awakened; maybe that's why he relies on his physical strength more than his ability since it's just second nature to him.
It turns out that Shen was once a fighting street urchin with a heart of gold! Notice how Mei is telling him in this scene and the scene from the previous chapter that she already has enough and Shen doesn't have to fight. But Shen isn't easily satisfied!
Little Shen was a streetwise orphan who wasn't content to just exist. Something was always driving him to try to create a better version of himself and the lives of those around him.
Unfortunately, Shen wasn't able to win the tournament. Still, his showing as the untrained-but-incredibly-gifted-kid was enough to gather the attention of someone.
Shen has a Xianxia origin story: A plucky orphan who has some kind of unquenchable drive for strength, plus a dependent sibling and "eyes of the dragon," is recruited by an old master whose current #1 student is poised to become an unwilling rival, and so he joins his mysterious martial arts school to train to become the very best. We're still missing some Chinese magicians, alchemy, and immortal hermits to complete the genre lmao. Tozuka may yet surprise us!
His teacher's ability to sense strong chi/ki/talent will be important to the story later.
But first, the title page:
Poor Shen! He really would've enjoyed training that way! He just can't sleep at night knowing that there might be strong opponents out there.
"Hey, Shen, I heard you're pretty strong!"
Shen's like a little brother trying to get all the JUICY DETAILS about Andy's EXCITING ADVENTURES and TALES OF COMBAT while Andy's like "Actually it was extremely traumatizing. So anyway, about the firework monsters..."
A mysterious staff appears! And is that Summer's core?
The Summer arc has so many gorgeous panels. I really like the white space in the next one.
It's Feng! And he's put the core into one of the Juniors before setting them loose to cause destruction.
The UMAs take off and shoot vertically up the skyscraper. Andy tells Shen to stay back and fight Feng, but Shen's already gone!
Fuuko and Mui both get caught in the crossfire of the guys yelling at each other.
Feng scoffs at Shen because he eagerly chased after the Juniors instead of recognizing that Feng was the greater threat. It seems that Shen hasn't yet mastered the ability to sense a person's strength.
Another zombie fight! Feng's prayer beads produce four jiangshi who take fighting stances. Shen hits that subscribe button right away.
This is finally Shen's chance to fight the great fighters of the past, just like he wanted!! Just look how happy he is!
The jiangshi attack at the same time with a variety of styles, kind of like the enemies Bruce Lee faces as he fights his way up the tower in the movie Game of Death. He also fights Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, which is totally worth watching.
Interestingly, Game of Death is an unfinished movie. I believe that fact gives us a clue about the Artifact of the same name in UU, but I'll have to come back to that later.
Shen uses his ability in a fabulous double spread. He's literally punching their faces in! That's our boy!
But something interrupts his smile...
Even though he beat all four easily, both Shen and Mui are unsettled. He has a dark shadow on his face instead of his usual grin, and she's worried what this means for Shen's future.
Holy shit! It's that guy who beat Shen at the tournament in the flashback! And Feng killed him at some point?! If Feng has already killed off Shen's old rivals, then Mui is right to be worried.
This spread is so cool. Feng was testing the waters with Shen, asking if his emotions would affect his fighting. Shen reassured Feng that he was just here to test his own strength and find satisfaction in the battle itself, and Feng grinned right back at him. These two seem like a perfect match!

❚❙ OBISPO ‘BISHOP’ LOSA MASTERLIST.
❚❙ MASTERLIST.
❚❙ JOIN MY TAG LIST.
Leaving your tray on the picnic table, starving and questioning yourself why he hasn't asked you for that before, you turn around to come back to the food truck. There are two people ahead of you and that only makes you feel angrier. You have been walking around Tijuana the whole morning and all you wanted to do was to stop and have some good mexican food, and not the one you are used to in California. The recipes change a lot on the other side of the border.
“Querida, can you ask for some spicy sauce?”
Impatiently waiting with your arms crossed and imagining the hundred ways you could kill these two guys who can't decide about their orders, it's finally your turn. The friendly old man looks at you, understanding your feelings, offering you some extra sauce. Taking the small sauce packets, you go straight to your table, tossing them over it with a dissimulated bad mood. Your boyfriend raises his eyes towards you. His gesture is weird, and you notice it when you make eye contact. Something is happening. But he is mostly like a closed book, so you don't give it much more importance.
When you're able to eat a bunch of friend chips, filling up your stomach, you can't help but sigh of happiness. Swinging your waist over your seat from one side to another, you start to dance briefly unconsciously. Your bitchiness starts to disappear, taking a sip from your bear, about to unwrap the big burrito al pastor you have ordered. But Bishop laughs interrupts your task. Frowning at him with your lips pressed in a confused smile, he shakes his head as if nothing random is happening in front of him.
“What?”
“You always do that”.
“Do what?”
“Dance. When you're hungry and I give you food; you dance”.
Mocking him, containing a giggle, you continue opening your delicious food. The pineapple smell floods your nostril, so the roast beef does. But something catches your whole attention. Something is wrong. The burrito isn't like the one the man did. Okay, actually, the point is it's what he did, but… looks like someone has touched it.
“The fuck you did?”
Bishop has his nose wrinkled, focused on his taco, shaking his head in a negative as he shrugs his shoulders. Squinting at him and grabbing your food, you have a mistrusted bite, leaving it again over the paper. Chewing it, but not tasting it, the mexican is forcing a fake grin on his lips. You're missing something, but, what?
“I swear I'm gonna punch you el pinche hocico, Obispo”.
“Why?” He can't help but complain in laughs.
“Because you did som—”.
“Really you haven't seen it yet?”
“See what?!”
You're starting to lose your chill, bowing down your head to your trail, until you see it. That was the reason why your burrito looked strange. Under it there is a small golden ring. But it's not just any ring. It's an engagement one. Your mind travels to that night two years ago, where you were drunk talking with Taza. You told him that you never would want to get married, but if you did one day, your future husband should use a burrito to propose. You weren't even dating Bishop.
Your eyes are filled with tears. Your lips are shaking. Your blurred gaze is on your boyfriend, getting up from his seat in front of you, taking the ring to clean it with a napkin. And then, he suddenly kneels down close to you.
“Since the first second you put a foot in the club, I knew one day I would be happily married to you. Living the life I thought that I wouldn't ever have. So, I bought it the next day and I've been keeping it for more than two years, until finding the perfect moment. Every morning since that day, when I've woken up, I've taken it and I've thought that one day you would carry it in your finger”. Cleaning your tears with the back of your hands, you're feeling at the edge of a heart attack, hearing his speech full of love. “You have given me everything without having to ask for anything. You have taken care of me, when I was lonely. You have given me your advice, when I needed it the most. When the only thing I could see was darkness, you showed me the light. You showed me the correct road to success, to happiness. And the only thing I want in my life, for now till forever, is to love you. To be by your side. To return you every single day what you have done for me. Because, querida, I can't imagine my existence without yours… So, what 'you say? Do you want to marry this outlaw biker? I promise it will be worth it”.
Of course it will be worth it. Every night he's out of home is made up with breakfast in bed. Every time he misses a date is made up with a day off. Every day he comes back pissed off and angry is made up with a session of cuddles and kisses. And every extra hour of working is made up with a trip. He has turned himself in your reason to live, in your reason to wake up in the mornings, in your reason to continue through the shit you face every day.
Nodding in tears, you almost jump onto him, falling to the ground hearing his cheerful laughs. You kiss his face all around, every inch of it until pecking his lips.

Picture Prompt Request
(Matt Rodriguez x Addison Sinclaire) with the picture prompt
As requested by @krsnlove
Matt x Addison in a Choices Red Carpet Diaries drabble
A/N My bff took my picture prompt and quickly wrote something amazing. Gotta return the favor. Going back to book 2 of RCD when Matt had his accident for this one. Not quite sure why I thought of this with the picture. And forgive me if I mess up the Spanish terms. I took French in High School and college. So...hello Google translate 😂
Masterlist
Mi cielito means "my little sky" and is an endearment usually used by grandparents according to my research.
Song: All I Have to Do Is Dream
Dreaming
It stopped. How strange. First there was the sensation of falling. Then agony. Not one part of my body was without pain. Then blessed unconsciousness. But then someone brought me to just to ask me questions. Broken English with a heavy Russian accent isn't the easiest to comprehend when every single nerve in your body is screaming. I think they mentioned a surgery about to happen. Now I have peaceful nothingness.
Matt decided this void was just what he needed. He might never leave. It was certainly better than the alternative.
"¿Mi cielito?" A soft, sweet voice drifted through the darkness.
Matt turned toward the sound he immediately recognized. It couldn't be. His precious abuela had died nearly fifteen years ago.
"It is you." A woman with silver streaked black hair approached him. A warm light followed her, chasing away the blackness surrounding him. "My handsome Mateo."
Matt shaded his eyes. "Ita?" He whispered the endearment in disbelief.
The short lady stopped a few feet from him and held her arms out. Her beautiful smile that he had inheirted formed. He blinked back tears and ran to embrace her.
"Mi cielito!" She exclaimed again, cupping his face between her hands. She pressed a kiss to his cheek. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm not sure." He looked around now seeing what looked like a courtyard of some sort they were standing in. A fountain gurgled nearby. "Where are we?"
She studied their surroundings. "It looks like my old home." She spun around, laughing. "Mateo, we are where I grew up!" Her rich, brown eyes met his. "Remember when I took you to San Felipe when you were eight years old?"
He nodded. "I do. Dad had to film a movie and you decided we should go on an adventure."
She beamed at him. Her brow slowly crinkled in thought the longer they looked around. "Why are we here?"
"I don't know." Matt rubbed his forehead as he searched his memories. "The last thing I can remember clearly is falling."
"¡¿Qué?!" She gently touched his face and then his arms. "Where are you hurt?"
He chuckled at her fussing over him. "Ita, I think from the height I fell, that I am hurt pretty much everywhere."
She shook her head as tears formed. "You shouldn't be here." She chewed on her lip while plucking at the bottom of her blouse. "Muy joven."
Matt took her hand and led her to sit with him at the fountain. "Ita, I'm sure the doctors are doing all they can."
She hmphed. "Then perhaps you are here for something else." She seemed to cheer at that thought. "Tell me, mi cielito, what is your life like?"
He grinned and explained his film career and friends.
She waved her hand impatiently. "No, no, no! Am I a bisabuela?"
"Ita!" He shook his head. "I haven't settled down yet."
"¿Que es esto? My grandson hasn't married yet?" She nearly screeched. She grasped his chin and turned his face to the left and right. "Impossible. You should have women falling over themselves to marry you."
He couldn't stop smiling at her. "I haven't married because I haven't found the right person."
She tilted her head in that disconcerting way that always made him think she could read his thoughts. "You have, mi precioso niño."
"Ita." He sighed. "She doesn't think of me like that."
"Did you ask her?" She asked.
He shook his head.
She exaggerated a groan and muttered a few insults in Spanish before facing him. She didn't bother to hide her frustration. "My grandson does not let chances go by." She stated firmly. "Now show me this woman."
His brow furrowed. "How?"
She tapped his forehead. "There used to something in there."
He snorted with laughter. "Alright, Ita. Her name is Addison." He closed his eyes while a smile formed. "She has long, golden hair. A pair of the most striking blue eyes I have ever seen. Her smile is warm and enchanting. She is even sweeter than she looks, and--"
"Oh." Ita's whisper of surprise made him open his eyes.
Matt's eyes widened at Addison standing before them. She was wearing a ballgown of shimmery gold that only highlighted her tanned skin, sunstreaked hair, and eyes that he usually found himself lost in.
Addison looked down at herself. "I love my dress you picked for me." She did a few twirls, smiling at the sparkly effect it had with the setting sunlight shining upon it.
Matt's grandmother noticed the darkening sky and attempted to keep her tears from falling. "Our time grows short, Mateo." She pulled him up and led him to Addison. "You must tell her what is in here." She pressed her hand against his chest.
Matt noticed he was in a tux. "Where did--"
She shushed him. "My doing." She smiled at him. "Now, let me see you dance with her as you would during your wedding."
"Ita--"
"¡Espere!" She held a golden tiara in her hands. "Your bride must wear my grandmother's bridal crown." She placed it on Addison's bent head and stepped back to study her. "Perfecta."
"There's no music, Ita." Matt reminded her. "How am I supposed to--"
A melody seemed to come from the very stars that were beginning to appear in the sky. His grandmother would choose The Everly Brothers' song, All I Have to Do Is Dream. He could remember catching her dancing to it with his grandfather in the kitchen.
And the song did seem quite appropriate under the circumstances.
He gazed down at the vision of Addison and smiled.
She stood on her tiptoes and pressed a sweet kiss to his lips while they slow danced.
He held her close as the sky darkened. He glanced at his grandmother and saw her with an expression of pure joy on her face. As the shadows fell across the courtyard, she blew him a kiss.
"Remember to tell her, mi cielito." She said while disappearing.
Addison pressed another kiss to his lips, making them tingle. "Please wake up, Matt." She whispered. Her hand gently cupped his cheek. "I can't stand the thought of this world without you."
Matt leaned in closer to her touch, amazed how real it felt. "Can't we stay here?" He asked, cuddling her closer.
She shook her head, tears forming. "Come back to me. I have so much to tell you." She tilted her head as if listening to the song. "I need you so, that I could die. I love so."
"Addison!" He tried to hold onto her as she began to recede into the darkness. "I love you. I need you to know that."
"Open your eyes." She begged from far away.
He began to feel smothered by the darkness. That initial comfort had disappeared along with his love.
He blinked and felt the rush of pain hit him. He took a deep breath, regretting it immediately when his cracked ribs reminded him they were there. He looked about the stark hospital room and finally saw the blonde head bowed next to his bed.
"Please come back to me." Addison pleaded softly. "I should have told you I loved you but I thought you were in love with Jessica." She sniffed and covered her face. "I can't lose you, Matt."
He tried to move his hand and grimaced at the effort it took to do so. He finally felt her silky hair.
Addison looked up. Her eyes were puffy from all her crying and she had dark circles under them. He wondered how long she had remained by his bedside, how long he had been unconscious.
"Matt?" She whispered.
"Addison." He croaked. He grimaced at that raw sensation in his throat.
She began to make half gasp/half sob noises as she realized that he was truly awake. "Oh Matt!" She took his hand and pressed her lips to it. "I've been so--the call--and Jessica said--" she began to cry harder.
Matt wished he could put his arms around her and comfort her.
She suddenly surged forward and kissed his lips. That familar tingle he felt when in the courtyard sparked against his skin. She backed away and lifted vulnerable eyes to his.
"I love you, Addison." Matt whispered. "So much."
She kissed him again, trying to stop her tears of joy when he deepened the kiss.
She cupped his cheek while whispering her own love for him.
Matt closed his eyes for a moment when Addison left to let the nurse know he was awake. Thank you, Ita, he whispered
When he opened them, he could have sworn he heard his abuela say, "Cásate con Addison y dame un bisnieto. Muchos bisnietos."
