Ok I feel like this is gonna be like super problematic or something but I feel like I should just get it out. I welcome comments, discussion, reblogs, and tags.

I find it really hard to talk about my own culture, because white (as in American/Canadian/British/Australian/etc) people talking about their culture has become such a taboo. And understandably so, to be fair, because due to colonization, there are a lot of cultural things that are no longer specific, and are now global in several other cultures that wouldn't otherwise have them.

I often see people in fandom from so many different countries and cultures take characters and put them in their culture: wearing certain clothes, eating certain food, doing certain activities, and so on, and I LOVE it. I love people exploring their love for their own culture and their love for their blorbo(s) at the same time. There's so much joy in it.

There's been several times where I wanted to join in, but felt like I couldn't because I "don't have a culture", as a white British person. But that's just completely untrue? I DO have a culture. It's not one that most people seem to care about, but I do. Sunday dinners, chip shops, pantomimes. Despite growing up in England, my dad is Scottish and I visited his side of the family up in Aberdeen on a regular basis, so kilts (they were worn by most if not all of the men at the first two weddings I remember attending) and bagpipes (I LOVE the sound, they're beautiful when played well) are also on there for me. My accent is a part of my culture too, and I genuinely love my accent (my strange little combination of RP and East Midlands that has people asking me if I'm Canadian...). Don't even get me started on the food (yes it's pretty bland and looks very boring but done right it's tasty and it's filling, yes i think it's stupid as hell that the british empire colonised a bunch of places in order to get spices and now a lot of white people in the UK don't even USE most of those spices)

With a little more thinking, I could probably list a lot more, but I feel like I can't so much as mention it off-handedly without someone showing up out of the woodwork to make fun of lower-class British accents (like when people say "bri'ish" (although I enjoy it when it's used in a neutral and fun way) or when people just completely fuck up and bastardise whichever already-discriminated-against English accent they're making fun of this time - honestly I think RP could stand to be made fun of a bit a lot more), or to make fun of the spices issue (like I said before YES it's stupid, do you think I colonised those countries myself????) and make horrid over-the-top gagging noises whenever "UK" and "food" are so much as mentioned in the same sentence.

I mean look at this. I just wanted to talk about my culture and how it affects me and I feel like I have to have such a huge lead-up and THEN I still feel the need to explain that the british empire sucked and that a lot of our food is quite bland etc etc etc.

With other (non-English speaking/non-white) cultures, people can just mention things and dress their favourite characters in traditional clothes and it's lovely and celebrated. Please keep doing this. Please put your favourite characters in your culture, there is NOTHING more joyful in fandom spaces than spreading your love of your own culture through characters that you also love.

I'd like to join in, is all. I'm not asking for the red carpet to be rolled out for me, I just feel like someone's gonna attack me if I mention my faves enjoying my favourite British food.

But even asking this feels like I'm being White(tm) and throwing a tantrum and whining "WHAT ABOUT MEEE?!?!?!?!" - this is NOT what I'm trying to do here. I don't need attention for it. Honestly the less attention I get the better, it feels like. I've seen some british hate on here that is genuinely horrible and disturbing. And sure, it's deserved for all of the colonisation and the many attrocities, but I didn't choose to be born here????? YES it's terrible but I'm tired of being the punching bag of everything that my country (countries?) have ever done wrong.

Is this entitled of me? It doesn't feel like it, but reading through this post, it kinda looks like it. Am I just insane and paranoid? Maybe. I don't know.

Some more Megami Tensei demons I've scanned, this time from Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

I love pop culture demons in the franchise in particular, because it plays well into the series lore and helps accentuate the contemporary setting, especially in TMS or Devil Summoner. These three are all from popular horror series.

The first one here is Nickelwise, which is clearly a pun on the iconic Pennywise from "It". I think it shows up early in the game? (I haven't really played it.) Not much to say here but a really cool design and would fit well next to regular demons.

This next one is Cenobite (or Hierophant in the English version), a representation of the most popular character from the "Hellraiser" franchise, the Hell Priest. However, the term "cenobite" also has roots in Monastic tradition. "Cenobite" is used to refer to monks within the monastery, most commonly used in Buddhism and Christianity. This ties back into the English version's name, Hierophant, which is a word for a priest in ancient Greece, who interprets sacred mysteries or esoteric principles. This creates a link between both the historical and pop culture inspirations for the character as it appears in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. This one was really fun to research and its been fun to fill out the megaten wiki pages for unexplored territory haha, especially cuz nobody seems to care about the Mirages.

This last one is Sadaco (JP) or Samantha (ENG), and is TMS's very own Sadaka Yamamura from the iconic The Ring franchise.

Sadako is the main antagonist of the series, and her fictional history alternates between continuities, but all depict her as the vengeful ghost of a psychic who was murdered and thrown into a well. As a ghost, she uses nensha, her most distinctive power and weapon, to create a cursed video tape. Whomever watches the tape will die exactly one week later unless the tape is copied and shown to another person, who then must repeat the same process.

With regards to the Mirage Sadaco, the use of the name Samantha appears to be a deviation of the name Samara, which is Sadako's name in the American version of The Ring released in 2002.

The artist's notes in the art book which accompanies the Japanese WiiU Collector's Edition of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (from which I have been scanning these artworks) explain how the design itself is reminiscent of dolls or mannequins which you might find in many horror movies, noting a deviation from simply referencing Sadako alone. Anyways I hope you enjoy these lil dives into TMS demons, they were really fun and I hope to continue, if you have any particular creature you have found little art of, or is maybe not well known on the wiki feel free to send me a lil ask box thingy, I really do love this series. I wish TMS had leaned more into Mirages just being demons because the FE mirages really just stand out as being generic soldiers and knights etc. and they feel like they have way less personality than say these cool pop culture creatures. All in all TMS is a sore spot for me cuz I think it needed very little to be so much better and they wasted all of its potential but I digress, until next time!

In anime/manga fandom culture, using fujoshi or otaku is the more Respectful option.

Well, I didn't word that quite right, but often what words people use to self-describe is indicative of how they engage with media/fandom — in that the people who use words like 'weeb' for example, are much more likely to decontextualise the media being consumed from its cultural context, or try to twist it more 'american'.

(I say american because it's also indicative of demographic. Arab anime fans use otaku, filipino anime fans use otaku... etc. The use of weeb is far more common in north america — though Mexico has a bit of variation on whether weeb or otaku is used — and other predominantly English speaking countries.)

(It's also indicative of age demographic where fandom Elders tm tend to use otaku and fujoshi, whereas what I like to call the 'new wave' of anime/manga fans where its become more mainstream and less 'cringe' would use weeb and substitute fujoshi for mlm or queer ships w/o having it as a self-describing word)

(said new-wave is also where you get anti-fujo sentiments from)

I was a manga fan in the 90s back when they were translating Crying Freeman for the US audience. I later moved on to anime like Ranma. I did see 'otaku' around, and some of us used it, but I wasn't aware of 'fujoshi' until after I'd left anime fandom in the early 00s and returned a decade later. I do use it now though.

Akaashi Keiji

So like, Keiji is already super down to earth and laid back so he takes everything in stride.

When you’re not with him he spends his time looking up cultural things so that he can understand you better

AAVE trips him up tho but that, too, he studies and researches bc he just wants to understand you better

Tbh he didn’t quite get your ThingTM about your hair but he’s not rude about it. Instead he just sits and listens to you when you talk about the teasing/trauma you went through about it

For a whole day he’s just silently mad bc “wtf, who teases someone about their hair like that? Why the hell would someone do that?”

“Babe, it’s okay.”

“It is absolutely not okay”

Cue soft yet angry keiji who hugs you tight and gives you kisses throughout the day, but when he’s not doing that he’s muttering to himself, cussing up a storm.

You’re nervous to meet his friends but like, he’s already beat it over their heads that if they say anything rude/offensive then he’s breaking their wrists and ankles

By accident he starts using your hair care stuff (he gets scolded bc that shit is expensive but once he starts pitching in to help you buy some he gets a pass)

Now y’all’s hair smells like cantu and coconut oil lmao

And THEN, of course, he starts using your skin cares stuff

“Your skin is just always so soft.” but what he doesn’t tell you is that he just loves the way you smell and him using your products is just a way for him to always be able to smell you

“Keiji,”You whine, “You’ve used up almost all of my conditioner again.”

“Not my fault it makes my hair feel nice.”

You roll your eyes but you aren’t mad. Not when he pitches in an equal, if not an even greater amount of money into your haircare and skincare budget. At first you assumed it was to be nice, but then you realized that he was most certainly using the products as well.

You reach over and run your fingers through his hair. It’s much straighter than yours, so he has to use a lot less of the product to avoid the risk of making his hair oily. But now, you assume, he must have found the right ratio between his own products and yours because his hair feels amazing.

Soft. Fluffy.

“No fair,”You say as you pout, flopping down beside him onto the couch. “You already have pretty lashes and smooth skin, now you’re using my products and getting better results than me.”

He wraps his arms around your waist and brings onto his lap, his work long since forgotten. “Sorry, baby.”

“Something tells me that you’re not really sorry.”

He’s not, but he doesn’t say that. Instead he buries his face into the place where your shoulder meets your neck. He takes in your scent and smiles, though his expression his hidden by the position the two of you are in.

“Keiji.”You whine, pouting still.

His smile grows wider. Yes, say his name more. He loves the way you say his name. The way it rolls off of your tongue. Your Japanese is getting better, but there’s still a cute little twang to your voice; specifically, when you say his name. (he hopes that never changes)

“Fine. How about I run us a bubble bath together, hm? Then we can do your skincare regimen together.”

You know that this is his way of getting to use your skincare stuff too, but he’s rubbing your back in soothing circles and the way his lips brush against your neck is distracting.

“Aren’t you...aren’t you worried that your friends will tease you for smelling like your girlfriend?”

He turns his head and kisses your jawline. “Not at all.”

Because really, he’s not. He’s never really cared when they teased him anyway, but he especially doesn’t care about them teasing him about this. He loves the way you smell. The way you feel. Your smile. Your laughter—everything about you really. Using your products helps him to carry your scent around with him, giving him a nice reminder throughout the day of you and everything about you that he adores.

Bokuto Kotaro

So like, Bokuto is just a people person. Super sociable and friendly

Y’all probably meet while he’s in the states for a game and he’s chilling, talking to Hinata and then boom, spits out his drink bc pretty lady

He’s not super shy when it comes to introducing himself but he doesn’t get your number right away and then gets into a slump

Was it the language barrier? Was it just that she doesn’t think I’m good looking?

Calls up Akaashi like “bro oh my goodness i met the love of my life but what if she just doesn’t want me :((“

And ofc Akaashi was asleep (bc time difference) and he’s irritated bc WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING AS SOON AS I ANSWER THE PHONE??? But he tries to be a good friend regardless and is just like “then study some english, dummy”

So Bokuto does

And like, he wasn’t the super best at studying in school but you bet your ass that he’s trying his damndest now

When y’all finally start dating he’s on cloud nine. Cutest boyfriend. Always showering you in compliments and affection

He doesn’t notice the stares that you two get from people (both Americans and Japanese folk alike) bc he’s just super heart eyes until one day and you’re just so uncomfortable. And he’s like “baby?? You okay??”

You try to explain to him that it’s because people are staring and he’s just like “well yeah, bc you’re hot? And so am I????”

Oh poor baby, he gets so upset when he finally gets what you mean. He’s so mad too bc like, who cares that y’all aren’t the same race? As long as you love each other because that’s what is supposed to be most important, right??

He gets super miffed about it but rather than going off on strangers every time it happens, he instead just turns to you to assure you that he loves you from the absolute bottom of his heart to the tippy top

“Bokuto-san, is that girl really your new girlfriend?”Asks one of the team’s athletic trainers.

Bokuto smiles with pride because why yes, y/n is his girlfriend and he is absolutely proud of it. You’re like sunshine to him. You make him so happy.

“Yeah,”He replies, “She is.”

The smile on his face fades when the trainer’s face scrunches up into a grimace. “Ahh, but Bokuto-san, you’re so popular in Japan. Do you really need a girl like her?”

You and Bokuto had been through this before. Some family members and some friends (could you two even call them friends at that point?) had made similar comments to the both of you. Some of them tried to be passive aggressive about it while others just straight up voiced their displeasure at your coupling.

It was none of their business though.

Not at all.

“And what is that supposed to mean?”He asks the trainer, standing to his full height of 6’2. He towers over the short man and stares him down. Waiting. He’s waiting for an answer but all the trainer can do is stutter and shake. “Oh come on, don’t go silent on me now. You had so much to say only a couple of seconds ago. Speak. Up.”

“I just meant...well, are you sure she’s a good look for you?”

That sets him off.

The conversation between the two of them had gone widely unnoticed by those in the room. That is, of course, until Bokuto was about to swing on him. Then chaos broke out. It took Atsumu and Oikawa to hold him back.

(Hinata tried but failed. He grabbed onto Bokuto’s arm but basically just had to hold on for dear life as Bokuto flung his arm about)

The athletic trainer gets fired because there’s no way Bokuto would ever even think about working with him again and, once he told his teammates about what happened, they stood behind him. (They like you a lot and they’ll be damned if you get talked about like that)

No one tells you anything but when Bokuto meets up with you that night for dinner, he hugs you a bit tighter and kisses you for just a bit longer.

Because, yeah, he may not care what other people say or think when it comes to your relationship, but you’re his #1. He’ll be damned if he lets anyone speak about you in his presence.

Juliet Immortal (2011) Review Part 1

A fantasy time travel AU Juliet/Benvolio fanfic with intense Romeo bashing that somehow managed to get professionally published. I had avoided it like the plague if just for the Romeo bashing alone (don’t you dare touch my tassel-gentle!!!) but since some reviews said his POV parts were paradoxically the best of the book, I decided to chance it. But ho boy, this is a doozy

So the premise of this book is that the tale of R&J as we know it is actually a ~poetic lie by Shakespeare. The “real story” is that Romeo betrayed Juliet to supernatural entities called the Mercenaries and locked her in the tomb. Juliet is rescued by the Nurse, who as it turned out is another kind of supernatural entity called an Ambassador dedicated to uniting people with their soulmates. Juliet joins them and for 700 years takes over bodies of troubled humans and tries to match them with their soulmates/true loves. Romeo is the antagonist Mercenary and tries to do the opposite, convincing one half of the soulmate partner either to die or murder the other half, I’m not sure. An angel/devil thing, in short. The plot concerns Juliet taking over the body of a troubled outcast called Ariel. Her target is uniting Ariel’s best friend Gemma with her soulmate, a Mexican-American boy named Ben. Romeo, meanwhile, has taken over the body of bad boy Dylan. As to how that goes, well…let’s just begin.

Juliet is the sun to Romeo, not the moon. As in, “It is the East, and Juliet is the sun!” How the fuck can you mess that up? Already you can sense the depth of this author’s understanding of Shakespeare.

There are so many things wrong with this, I literally can’t describe it

The play apparently glamorizing suicide aside (it does not!!!), what is with this “taking an innocent life” bullshit? They did not murder one another, they committed suicide, and they were driven to it not by their love so much as fate, chance, and their parents’ destructive feud.

Also, the very idea of Romeo telling Shakespeare the story is laughable.

Ah, yes, Shakespeare bashing is 100% what I’m looking for in my Shakespeare published fanfic (die, die, die)

So the insta!love for Romeo was stupid, naïve, and destructive, but with Ben it’s True Love(tm)? *sips a Coke can* Interesting

Author doesn’t understand what adaptations are Part 283992847399. Presgurvic would have worked so much better if just for this reason. At least they would have been playing the actual characters.

Obvious plot twist is obvious! Book, could you maybe work a little more?

Possessive!Juliet, much? Why does Juliet still have chemistry with Romeo, who is portrayed as monstrous and the son of Satan? Be consistent, book! Don’t you give me that “enemies with benefits” vibe (or actually, do. Now that would be more interesting). It's such a cuttease

Bernstein’s score and Jerome Robbins’ choreography is!!! not!!!! for!!! amateurs!!!! Hell, it isn’t even for high school, unless that high school has the best and most funded drama department ever. Again, Presgurvic would have been more accessible. Not that I'm complaining; I always love any and all West Side Story references.

The problem plays, all of his collaborated plays, a huge chunk of the English histories, all of the Roman histories, and some of the comedies are inferior to R&J. Hell, the two Richards, Richard III and Richard II felt more amateurish and their verse was much less powerful. R&J is Tier 1 or at least Tier 2 Shakespeare. This is some author mouthpiecing going on.

If you listen very carefully, you can hear Jerome Robbins elegantly rising from his grave to smack a bitch.

So Evy telling Anaksunamun to "pick on someone her own size" is my favorite thing because I think that people forget that Evy is just as protective of Jonathan as he is of her. Then there's Rick who probably went from "I'm only trying to protect Jonathan because Evy would be sad if I didn't" to "Damn, I've gotten used to him and I'd be sad if something actually happened to him". What I'm trying to say is that this is a trio that lives by "if you mess with one of us, you mess with the rest of us.

YES. Characters being protective of each other is the jam I will die on (I know, mixing metaphors, but what the hell). And, well, let’s see what we have in canon before going into headcanons:

• Like you said, Evy telling Anck “Why don’t you pick on somebody your own size” before yanking her off of her brother just as he’s about to get stabbed through the throat. (In the novelisation she says “Leave my brother alone” and honestly I don’t know which I love more.) And in TM, when they’re cornered by the mob and backing up against a wall, Jonathan tries to shield Evy from the brainwashed zombies in front of them. In both movies they hold hands when they run. MY HEART.

• Much has been written (to my eternal joy) about how soft and protective Rick is of Evy even early on, when his version of “MUST PROTECT” consists in dipping her over the rail of the boat. And yes, there’s definitely an element of keeping Jonathan safe because Evy would be sad otherwise, but they also seem to just like hanging with each other? Like, when they get back to Cairo and Rick has his fight with Evy re. bailing or staying, he goes to the same bar Jonathan (and later the Americans) is and has a drink with him. And when they’re in Hamunaptra and Jonathan’s gun runs out of bullets (and he just... chucks the gun at the mummies XD) Rick physically drags him away. Toggle Artificial Intelligence – TAI – It turns AI on and off and therefore characters will not react to you.

Toggle Combat Artificial Intelligence – TCAI –

It will turn combat for AI off and on. When you use its characters won’t attack but they may become hostile. You can combine it with TAI so that you completely disable NPCs.

Toggle Detection – TDETECT – It detects all AI so that you can understand in which direction to go.

Toggle Player Control – TC –

It turns on and off the control of NPC. If you want to use it, just target NPC and type this in the command. You will be able to control the NPC and you will have the two commands simultaneously.

It will turn markers on your map on and off. Change # with 0 to disable everything and 1 to enable.

Re-appear – ENABLE – It will make your disappeared target re-appear.

Delete – MARKFORDELETE – It permanently deletes selected item. It can remove the target completely and not just make them disappear.

Set Ownership – SETOWNERSHIP – It gives you a possibility to make your item ownerless.

Unlock – UNLOCK – You will be able to unlock the targeted door or chest

Lock – LOCK <#> –

It will allow you to lock the person, door or chest. Instead of # the idea is to enter the level of lock difficulty that could go between 0 and 100.

Resurrect – RESURECT <#> –

It will bring any NPC back to life. When you enter 1 it will come with all items intact, but if you don’t use any number it will create a fresh new copy of it.

Empty Inventory – REMOVEALLITEMS –

It will remove all items that you have in your inventory or target’s inventory. In case that you want to get everything from other player or character, just add PLAYER.

Gender Change – SEXCHANGE –

It will change the gender of your targeted NPC or yourself. That will help you change the body shape, but the face and head will remain the same.

Set Scale – SETSCALE <#> –

You just have to target the object so that you can set the scale. If you don’t target anything, it will by applied to your character. It will increase damage and speed.

Teleport NPC – MOVETO PLAYER – It will teleport NPC next to you

Set Player Relationship – player.setrelationshiprank <RefID> <#> –

It will change the relationship between you and NPC, which will create a different disposition. You can replace # with numbers between 1 and 4.

Add or Take Items from NPC Inventory – openactorcontainer <#> –

Every single NPC contains different items based on faction ranking. When you use this command you can access their inventory. Just add instead # number between 1 and 4 based on actor’s rank status.

Return Position – GetPos <axis> –

It returns the position value of your target, and you just have to replace axis with x, y, or z values of the axis that you can find out. Therefore, you can position items without any additional problem.

Set Position – SetPos <axis> <#> –

You can set the position value for your target. Just replace the axis with x, y, z and this will give you possibility to get any number.

Return Angle – GetAngle <axis> – It will return the rotational axis to your target. Just replace axis with x, y, or z in case that this is required.

Set Angle – SetAngle <axis> <#>2 –

You can easily set the rotational axis of your target, but you have to replace axis with x, y, or z values of the axis so that you can position items much more precise.

The phrase “What’s in a name?” gets bandied about, usually in regard with ancestry or history, if you will. Does the surname Smith indicate that somewhere in your family tree there was a blacksmith – undoubtedly toiling under a spreading chestnut tree? The name game gets far more convoluted when we throw in a foreign language. At Camp Kodenkan in 1978 Professor Fisher provided me and others a recipe for Okazaki Liniment. No name other than Okazaki Liniment was offered at the time. Somewhere, the grapevine hinted, there was another name for the massage oil – Satsuzai. Or was it Satsusai with an “s” rather than a “z?” Eric Pietrelli’s seminal paper on the subject gave a small pause for confusion with the artistic font he used on his cover sheet. Was the 6th character a “z” or an “s?” Well it didn’t match the two other characters that looked like an “s” so it must be a “z.” Once you got into the paper and read the content, it was settled – it was a “z.” We now had a far more interesting name than liniment, we had SATSUZAI, and it was our secret sauce for massages!

But there was a small problem. When some upper rank members of the AJJF took a class from Sensei Keith Okazaki he informed them that the Okazaki family never used the name satsuzai, they called it “Bug Juice.” So where did the name originate?

I had the advantage of starting this investigation in 2019 that others did not – the world wide web. When you plug satsuzai into search engines, your results pretty much end up with links to AJJF / Danzan Ryu pages that discuss Okazaki liniment, but you generally don’t find links outside of that world. I did, however, get a hit on a scanned document from the War Department, dated 1945 (TM 3-48 1). This was a listing of Japanese to English words. I downloaded the document and did a search for satsuzai. After a few moments of CPU cycles, the screen showed the highlighted word satsuzai with the word liniment after it. Huzzah, I had found a magic secret decoder ring. But I was curious as to why the American military would know this, but seemingly no one else? And then I notice that I was in the “T” section of this ad hoc dictionary and that there were two letters preceding the highlighted satsuzai, they were “t” and “o.” The word in the dictionary was not satsuzai, it was tosatsuzai.

Plugging tosatsuzai into the web search engines now gave hits in Japanese to English dictionaries and behold the translations they offered – liniment. But one hit was more interesting than the others: “An English-Japanese Dictionary of the Spoken Language,” available on Google books. The first edition was compiled by Ernest Mason Satow and Ishibashi Maskata, in 1875. The online version is the 3rd edition, dated 1904. As the title suggests, it lists English words first and then the Japanese equivalent. In this document, “satsuzai” is found twice, once as satsuzai and once as tosatsuzai. In this dictionary liniment is translated to satsuzai. It’s the first occurrence encountered in this dictionary that is quite interesting. That first instance is found as tosatsuzai and the English word linked to tosatsuzai is embrocation. The illuminating thing is the definition of the word embrocation:

“the liquid or lotion with which an affected part is rubbed or washed; a kind of liniment.”

Thus, tosatsuzai is not just some liniment, it’s a special type of liniment for rubbing!

The kanji in this dictionary is a scanned document. The resolution of the kanji is too poor to make a definitive comparison to modern Japanese-English dictionaries.

I did have a little fun with this newly found morsel of knowledge. At the 2020 AJJF National Convention I approached Professor George Arrington – a great researcher of everything Danzan Ryu and I mentioned the word satsuzai. George’s quick (and possibly correct) response was “no such word.” I then put on my Morpheus overcoat and said “What if I told you there was a word called tosatsuzai?” He immediately brought forth modern technology to bear on the matter – he searched the web via his phone. His audible response of his search result is not suitable for this paper. Suffice to say he was bemused. So where did satsuzai come from?

I consulted with my brother in law, who is a translator in Japan, and he suggested that perhaps some folks were hearing it incorrectly and writing down what they heard, or that satsuzai – tosatsuzai was akin to y’all and you all, a contraction.

But then again…

I have found the word satsuzai associated with the word liniment in a few places apart from the Danzan world. The War Department published two technical manuals TM 30-481 and TM 30-482 and you will find satsuzai (without the “to” prefix). It is listed as liniment on page 604 of TM 30-482 and with various combinations such as sekken satsuzai (soap liniment), on page 622. The trouble here is that it also lists satsu as liniment on page 603. A couple of the entries have kanji associated with the listing, but the scanned documents do not provide enough detail to render them above chicken scratching. Bear in mind that it was an army document that led me to pursue the word tosatsuzai as the Japanese word for liniment. Neither TM 30-481 or TM 30-482 lists tosatsuzai.

A respected dictionary “The Original Modern Reader’s Japanese-English Character Dictionary,” by Andrew Nathaniel Nelson, does list satsuzai as liniment on page 453 and the kanji is readable and it matches what is found on online kanji dictionaries. And if one believes that Andrew Nelson’s work is credible (it is), satsuzai is a legitimate word. For added confusion though, on page 277 of his work you will find tomatsuzai, which is defined as liniment-ointment on the same page you find tosatsuzai as liniment.

Since Keith Okazaki stated that the family did not use the word satsuzai, you couldn’t say it was a private/proprietary name unknown to the outside world. Yet modern online dictionaries do not seem to recognize the word satsuzai. The War Department recognized both tosatsuzai and satsuzai, depending on which publication. A respected published dictionary recognizes both satsuzai and tosatsuza,i as does a turn of the century (1904) dictionary.

Perhaps satsuzai was a colloquial term that fell into disfavor, or tosatsuzai has a more pedigreed history that those who write online dictionaries prefer. I do say that tosatsuzai’s translation to embrocation has an old-time sophistication, with which I have become enamored.

How did we in the Danzan community start using the name Satsuzai? It may simply be someone asked, “How do you say liniment in Japanese?”

What do I now label my bottles of embrocation? Bug Juice. It has fewer letters than Okazaki Liniment or Tosatsuzai and chews up less tape on my P-Touch labeler. If y’all come up to me and say Satsuzai I might say you’re 2/3rds there or I might let it go. After all, I said it for over 40 years and old habits are hard to break.

What should you call it? I say dealer’s choice. I am reminded of what my father once told me: “Call me anything you want except Late for Dinner”.

For some more fun, sometime ask me about how to make Okazaki Liniment / Bug Juice / Tosatsuzai / Satsuzai. I know of 4 different recipes and when I mix it, I do a substitution from what I was originally taught. That makes it five different ways that I know on how to make it.

Yeah!! There's this weird thing where white Americans talk about ourselves as boring, culture less, neutral, as if that were a bland if self deprecating fact. When actually it is also a sign of white supremacy at work, that so many of us have had it instilled in us to think of ourselves as a featureless, disconnected, contextless neutral nothing. It's like we're the Borg or something.

this thing happens on the ancestry dot com subreddits where white people will post their DNa results and be like "sorry this is so boring!" Or "looks like i'm mostly irish and german like I thought, sorry this isnt more interesting guys!" And stuff like that and it's like... actually that stuff is only boring under white supremacy and vague white hegemony. No background is cooler or more interesting than another per se, unless you have already labeled some as normative and some as non normative. every family has rich culture and a history, traditions and practices and pain...

and I think it's good for us to unpack hegemonic generic Whiteness(tm) by instead actually having a more articulated identity of who we are and investigating what our whiteness means. both the horrible things it has indoctrinated in us (via generic white supremacy) and the completely neutral to benign things from specific cultures that give us rootedness and context. Whiteness(tm) is a void. That's part of why it appropriates so much. It destroys all it touches. Having an actual interrogated identity and complex relationship to who you are and what values were instilled in you, and a sense of one self as coming from a specific culture... I think that can help us name and understand ourselves and unlearn a lot of toxic shit.

So for me, like, Being English is interesting! English history is so complicated and multicultural and cool! I've always loved learning about English history, especially the middle ages and the Tudor era and how those periods still influence the world today. Quaker history is cool as shit! Pacifists and abolitionists and soft spoken rebels! Irish history is fucking rad as hell! Italian culture is amazing! And being part Black and Choctaw is also fascinating and important and has long been forcibly erased from my family's history (similar to how you describe it being with yours)... so I want to connect with it by learning about it too. For me, that will take the form of a lot of research, reading, learning history, and talking to people who also care about it.

It's so weird, whenever I bring it up to my family, they don't want to talk about any of it at all. Are they ashamed of it? do they think it doesn't matter? Do they think it's false and appropriative to learn about and be emotionally invested in? I think the real answer is that to them it doesnt matter. They don't want to think about who they are or what the past is because that requires actually confronting colonialism, racism, and specifics of identity, which bursts the cozy thoughtless bubble of generic midwestern Whiteness, which likes to pretend it exists outside of context and time.

the DNA race & ethnicity percentages from tests like Ancestry dot com are super flawed – not because the chemistry is flawed, but because the data pools and how they are labeled are flawed. what counts as being “from” England? at what point in time did the DNA have to “be” there? who was sampled to reflect that?

and the data are constantly being updated within the site’s system. sometimes a person will gain and lose whole ethnicities over the course of one update or another. trace percentages (1-2% or less) are especially unreliable.

and people mis-interpret what DNA percentages mean in all kinds of bigoted ways, not least of which being applying blood quantum to defining (or to invalidating) a person’s Native cultural ties.

that’s why Elizabeth Warren doing a DNA test to “prove” her Nativeness was fucked up. she interpreted a single 1%, with no cultural awareness of what tribe it was, or whom it came from, as evidence she was a member of an oppressed class. as i best understand it, that was the problem. Not the actual smallness of the %.

A person could have a similar DNA breakdown as Warren but have cultural ties and uphold Native traditions and know her family, and that would be very different. A person could be descended from Native freedmen and have 0% native ancestry but still be able to trace their family to the tribe, and be a rightful cultural member of it.

the family match stuff will be really cool to see. who are my distant relatives? who are my second cousins? what family records and photos do they have? any information i can get from living people will be the most valuable stuff.

and now that i know specifically that it was my great great grandma who was Black (and that another great-grandparent on another side probably was part Black too) it will be cool to see the percentage estimate there, I have to admit! if I can find relatives I have in common with that ancestor, I might finally be able to figure out where my great grandma she came from and what her story was.

she was born 15 years after slavery ended in TN, so it makes sense that her parents are harder to trace. at least one of them probably was enslaved. I have no idea who they are.

I belong to a Facebook genealogy group that is primarily for the descendants of enslaved people as well as enslavers, and it is a really welcoming, thoughtful, lovely space where people share their DNA data (the detailed stuff), as well as photos and documents, to help put people in touch with relatives and recover family stories. it will be cool to be able to add to that data in some small way, and to maybe meet relatives who share ancestors along that line.

DNA data will also help me clear up (potentially) some roadblocks I have with my dad’s dad’s family, because it is unclear to me when they moved from Choctaw territory in Oklahoma to Tennessee, and who is related to whom. It would also potentially help clarify some *other* family lines that connect to Osage Sioux and Cherokee tribal members… You can’t actually clear up *any* specific Native membership using DNA (and again, blood quantum is racist), but DNA can help put you in touch with cousins who have better family records and perhaps even a connection to the culture, and that’s all more meaningful.

It will also be very cool to have decent-ish estimates of my European background – that is where the Ancestry data seems to be the most reliable, unsurprisingly. English Quakers are definitely in there, Irish is definitely in there ( on my dad’s side), but what else?

A lot of my mom’s family is from Pennsylvania so they may be German. There has to be some reason my grandma does the sourkraut on New Year’s thing. I only recently learned my grandpa was born in new jersey, not PA, and based on things he said throughout his life, I think he might have been part Italian? He was always really weird about talking about his family,so I know very little about his life.

my mom’s whole family has always been acutely disinterested in talking about where they came from and their pasts and history… I always thought that seemed very weird, as if they had something to hide. but recently @stronghours mentioned that her whole family doesnt give a shit about genealogy either, seemed incurious about it in a smiilar way, so maybe this just the default state of white midwestern identity? to not care? to like consider yourself so neutral and generic that identifying as anything or thinking about the past would only serve to like, highlight the alienation of modern life?

idk. probably reading too much into things. i just never understood why on one side of my family i had a ton of rich, fascinating stories, but no actual data, and on the other side everyone was relatively secure and stable, and had lived in the same area forever it seemed, but appeared to have no sense of history, no identity, no stories, no family mythos, nothing at all.

Hi! :) I'm starting as a translator but i find it a little hard to find clients, even on Proz :( can I ask you how you do it? I know that the beginnings as a freelance translator are usually difficult for at least the first 1 year (or 2) but any advice would be great to minimize the waiting. Do you have any special techniques (or maybe more at the begging of your career? Tips for Proz, LinkedIn, etc? Thank you very much! ❤️

I still have this problem myself- I’ve only been freelancetranslating for 2.5 years now. I’ve mentioned this before in my posts, but I’m alsoonly freelancing part-time. I’d LOVE to translate full-time, my business justisn’t stable enough for me to switch over. So I have another part-time job thathelps keep me in books and cereal and moisturizer.

I have profiles on ProZ, Upwork, TM-Town, and LinkedIn. Ihave a membership to ProZ (helps me be higher up on their directory, and I’mable to watch more of their webinars for free), and a membership with the ATA(American Translator’s Association). I also have a professional twitter where Imake posts related to translation, literary translation, literature, the Frenchlanguage, current events in the translation world or the literary world or theFrench literary world, or anything professional that piques my interest and I’dlike to share.

I send out e-mails to agencies offering my services as afreelancer pretty regularly- if they e-mail me back, it’s usually just to saythat they don’t want to pay me much or that they’d be interested in hiring mewhen I have more experience.

To get more experience, I need to get paid work. Kind of acatch-22.

The advice along the way that I’ve gotten from othermore-established translators is:

1. Self-advertise (whether that’s profiles,memberships, certifications, twitter, linked-in, a professional website)

2. Network (keep in touch with uni profs, makefriends with established translators on twitter, and get in touch with thatcousin who knows a friend’s dad that does translation- one of these people mighthave work for you eventually)

3. Take underpaid work for the experience, and thenyou can gradually raise your rates or land higher-paying jobs.

Some steps that I need to take next, to get to that nextlevel, are to create a website and take a few more lesser-paying jobs :P

I know translators who are making it- and at least I’m doingsome translation work- but it’s hard not to get discouraged. I’m verypassionate about French and translation though, so I don’t see myself evergiving up on freelance translation :)

*caveat: this can all depend on your language pair. I’veseen that there’s a lot more translation work going from English into anotherlanguage. It’s preferable to be native in the target language, although thisisn’t a set-in stone rule. So I see that generally there’s less work going fromFrench into English, which is my language pair.

Donald and the Brexiteers - a dynamic encounter

My special Christmas satire for my company, J.S. Research KG

The scene: Donald Trump (DT) has arrived for his first visit to the UK. Together with the Prime Minister, Theresa May ™, he attends a press conference in front of No. 10. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson (BJ) stands in the back, among members of the President’s entourage. The press corps waits restlessly for the Prime Minister to end her formal statement.

TM: “…so that, naturally, the President and I concur in that the Special Relationship between our two countries will continue to be of paramount relevance in international relations…“

Donald Trump suddenly raises his left hand to give the PM a high five, who throws him a bewildered look; in an almost seamless manner, Trump then straightens his hair while May recollects her posture; Boris draws a face in the unsuccessful attempt to hide his amusement.

TM: “Alright, we will now take a few questions. Laura“

The BBC‘s political editor, Laura Kuenssberg draws her breath:

LK: “Mr. President, after your announcement that the United States are to retreat from the arena of international security, do you expect the United Kingdom to take on some of those responsibilities?“

May throws a somewhat abashed glance to the side, while Boris grins wolfishly

DT: “Well, last time I checked, we’ve got 14 aircraft carriers while you Brits got zero…“

Trump momentarily spins on his heel to consult with his National Security Advisor who shakes his head, signalling a “2“ with his right hand

“…that is, uhm, you want to share two of those with the French or thereabouts, right? Well I don’t know, honestly, I don’t know, but to me, that seems an awful puny bang for an awful lot of ocean.“

May fights for her composure; Boris tousles his already dishevelled hair, setting a grim face

LK: “Ah… Is that to say, Mr. President, that you doubt the capability…?”

May treats Kuenssberg to a deadly glance, something between Margaret Thatcher and Professor McGonagall; Trump sets an empty face, frowns

DT: “I mean, look: Ever since that mishap in Africa, when Ike held your feet to the fire, you Brits have no balls left to brag about, right?”

May has to support herself on her microphone, triggering a short acoustic feedback; a dozen newspaper correspondents scribble away on their notebooks feverishly; flashbulbs; Boris’s features have morphed into a thin, sarcastic smile, over which he looks at the President’s National Security Advisor, who shrugs helplessly.

Andrew Sparrow of the Guardian recollects himself faster than the others:

“Mr. President, do you say that ever since Suez, Britain has lost her ability to project power internationally – even within the framework of NATO?”

DT: “Sorry, folks, but NATO, come on: What exactly is NATO? Uncle Sam walks his Rottweilers, and Uncle Sam does not want to have a stroll no more. Okay, with you Brits, it’s rather the bulldog than the Rottweiler, but still…”

Silence; photo cameras click, video cameras whir; Larry the Cat, Chief Mouser to No. 10, miaows somewhere in the background; Sparrow seizes the moment for an additional question:

“A question towards Brexit to you both: Since Brexit has diminished British influence on the continent massively, isn’t there a need for augmented American presence in Europe rather than less?”

Theresa May suddenly lights up, regains her stiff upper lip as well as her tongue:

“Brexit means Brexit!”

Boris buries his face in his hands; Trump cuts off the Prime Minister:

DT: “I don’t think so, I don’t think so. Brexit has been simply great, and us Yanks and you Tommies have wasted way too much energy to those ghastly liberals on the continent for way too long. It’s about time they manage without us, I’d say!”

May has looked restlessly at Trump during his answer; now, she intervenes immediately:

TM: “I think what the President wants to say…”

DT: “I know what I wanted to say, Tessa!”

TM: “….the President has assured me that he still thinks the UK’s role in Europe to be of particular importance, outside the EU no less than before.”

Laura Kuenssberg is unsatisfied:

LK: “What economic consequences do you expect from this intensified Anglo-American cooperation?”

May sets a triumphant smile

TM: “It just may enable us to have the cake and eat it. HM Government, in any case, will see to it that hard-working British families stand to profit from it.”

DT: “What have you English with your cake of late?! Anyway – when the chips are down, we’ll certainly strike a deal; you seem pretty cheap with Sterling buying less bucks than for a long time.”

Boris starts to reel on his heels tensely; Daniel Martin, chief correspondent of the eurosceptic Daily Mail raises his hand:

DM: “Prime Minister, you two appear to be rather unwilling bedfellows. How, to your opinion, can Britannia sex herself up again for Uncle Sam?”

Scattered chuckles among the journalists

TM: “What kind of question…”

“By prostitution!”

Boris has grabbed May’s podium, shoving in front of the microphone of an aghast Prime Minister; the press corps collectively holds their breath; one of the newspaper correspondents drops his pen audibly

TM: “Boris, you…”

But Boris is not to be leashed any more:

BJ: “We will offer a trade deal to our American friends, the conditions of which they cannot refuse: Preferred access to our markets, combined with unilateral, total freedom of movement for US citizens – this is going to be an entente cordiale singulièrement!“

Trump has been watching Boris with an amused smile; now, he slaps the British Foreign Secretary on the back:

DT: “Entente something whatever, I and Boris here, we are going to have great fun!”
