lumon's comical mocking even way to try to be inclusive to milchick because he hasn't seen anyone like him at higher positions. you could tell it bothered him so much it was horrifying and humiliating what they're trying to do with those paintings. the way this is the only episode he hasn't smiled once oh i hope he kills them all

SEVERANCE 2.03- Who Is Alive?

The Board wishes to express that I, Natalie, received the same gift upon receipt of my current position and found it extremely moving.

Newest theory addition (this one is admittedly pretty shaky):

Cobel (and maaaaaybe Milchick? probably not tho, Milchick ep3 is not a man dealing with wack racist nonsense for the first time ever) aren't unsevered, they're perma-severed.

Exhibit A: Both of them are too weird to be explained solely by indoctrination into the Eagan cult, but if they are innies their flavor of weird makes sense. The ways they navigate interpersonal situations are effective toward innies lower than them on the pecking order but they don't seem particularly capable of shifting tactics effectively with outies, who tend to find them uncanny and offputting.

Exhibit B: Cobel's shrine, made up of little clues to her past as well as Eagan devotional items.

Exhibit C: When Dylan found out his outie had a son, his self-concept crystallized atound that fact; in much the same way Cobel's seems crystallized around her lost Charlotte

Exhibit D: The unceremonious tossing of the baby doll during the lactation consultation with Devon. She knows a great deal about the "how to" of lactating, while it never occurs to her that tossing a baby in front of a new mother holding her own baby would be an unacceptable faux pas from an outie, a nurse, and a mother.

Exhibit E: If she's a full-time innie, her obsession with Mark remembering Gemma is more personal than I'd previously thought. She doesn't just hope to reconnect with someone severed, she wants to overcome her own severance.

I only got into Severance like a week ago so I'm not sure what ground the fandom had already covered, but here are my theories heading into season 2:

-MDR is sorting memory data for severed people or severance candidates. The 4 types of data they're sorting are the 4 tempers (WO - woe, DR - dread, FC - frolic, MA - malice), not sure what the 5 categories represent yet.

- Each of the MDR crew represent an overabundance of one of the tempers. Mark is woe, Dylan is frolic, Irving is dread, Helly is malice.

-Lumon is using or has used brain dead people as test subjects for severance. They can somehow sever the dead parts of the brain & essentially create a new person from whatever functional portions remain. Gemma/Ms. Casey is one of these subjects.

-Ms. Cobel has a comatose loved one under Lumon's care right now and that's why she's so obsessed with Mark/Gemma. She's desperate for confirmation that a severed person can recognize a loved one with enough prompting & familiar stimuli.

-Outie!Irving is a labor activist who infiltrated Lumon's severed floor & his sleep deprivation + painting the testing floor + Ace of Spades is an attempt to create a liminal state in Innie!Irving and an image strong enough to break through.

-The ultimate goal of the severance project is two-fold: 1) create the ultimate worker drone by siloing undesirable attributes & indoctrinating them into the Lumon ideology/corporate culture 2) achieve immortality for the Eagans by fully digitizing human consciousness.

i really want to know what ties down mr. milchick's loyalty to lumon he's working day and night for various different departments he's tackling people he is getting bitten for them he's investigating on their behalf he's firing and rehiring people buying pineapples organising jazz and egg parties handling wrath confusion and curiosity in such a seamless manner why does he do all that is he simply a masochist or do they have something over him too
