saw some people dismissing Markhelly as just introducing the love triangle trope, and as a long hater of the love triangle trope, I actually love it
Mark S. developing feelings for Helly is less a love triangle between her and Gemma and more an example of how much the severance procedure destroys your previous life, how much it takes from you, how anything the Innies try to create for themselves - personalities, lives, meaning, relationships - are affected by outer lives they don't even KNOW about
Mark and Helly are just like Burt and Irving - Burt was falling in love, believing it to be for the very first time, all while his Outie was likely going home to his loving partner. and Mark was experiencing romance for the first time with Helly all while his Outie was traumatized and mourning the loss of his wife
I don't think this show is the type to minimize that down to "oh who will Mark end up with??" because I can't see them solving the Burt/Irving situation with "but who will Burt choose??"
because like. it just shows. these are DIFFERENT people with entirely different experiences and you have now created a new person who has formed NEW relationships and even if you get rid of the severance procedure, how do you rectify that? do you just destroy an entire consciousness and all the relationships it was entangled with (like Burt) or do you force an Outie to live with an alternate identity, pressure them to keep those relationships that mean nothing to them and have them deal with the fact that in a completely different scenario a version of you fell for someone else?
this is actually one of the ONLY shows I will accept a love triangle from because it's not about what love interest is better or what ship wins, it's about how you can try to erase all relationships from a person and they will STILL form new ones because people are not machines designed only to work, people are designed to love and form bonds and you can't take that away from them!!
#👏👏👏#you’re so right op#simplifying this relationship as just another will they won’t they is such a discredit to both characters#you sit down and start writing a list of all the things the innies get to CHOOSE about themselves and it’s a very short list#they can’t even choose what they wear each day#they don’t choose their hairstyle or brand of underwear or if they want to take a fucking nap#the only thing they can choose - and the one thing lumon can’t define or put a limit on really - is who they choose to care about#mark’s outie was so filled with love that he dedicated his life to grief#Helly’s outie is so independent and forthright that she’s clearly always gone after what she wanted with both hands#you carry the pain down there but you also carry the love and the drive and the essence of who you are in the most basic terms#of course mark and helly have found each other#it just so happens that their outies are diametrically opposed to each other bc of their status and upbringing#and isn’t that just so COOL#severance

i fucking knew helly was gonna lie. as soon as they started talking about what they saw in their outies’ worlds, i felt it in my bones.
because how can she trust anyone else? let alone herself??? how can anyone trust her, when she knows her genes are the thing that got them into this in the first place????
i think that’s why she’s so insistent that her and her outie are different people. and why she’s so eager to abandon helena eagan to the wolves. she doesn’t want to be her. she knows she’s different.
#agreed agreed agreed#this girl is enemy 1 on the outsider#the literal face of the company#she feels like a betrayer even though none of it is her innie’s fault#I just hope the lie breaks soon#because something like this only eats you up from the inside#and Burt is already suspicious#severance

I think the way to tell if we’re seeing Helena or Helly in ep1 is if our girl is wearing pantyhose. I remember Britt Lower saying that she always wore pantyhose when she was playing Helly bc they were so constricting that it fed into her character ‘s struggle with confinement. (Of course, she could have also been wearing them when she OTC’d into Helena, not sure). So yeah, let’s see if our girl’s wearing those damned pantyhose next time 👀
#severance#severance spoilers#I’ve quickly compared Helena and helly’s s1 hair but so far don’t see a difference

I’ve seen several people take Milchick’s “five months” statement as gospel, but let’s all remember that 1) Milchick lies (a lot), and 2) it’s clear that Milchick is just now moving into his new office. So cobel has been terminated since this all started and he’s just NOW moving his stuff in? No, it has definitely not been 5 months. Maybe 5 days.
#severance#it’s better if the innies think that what happened was a long time ago#it helps the lie that they’re now “celebrities#always remember that Milchick and lumon lie

I’m not jumping on the Helena infiltration bandwagon just yet. It’s a solid theory for sure, and there are signs that point to it. But on my first watch I really just assumed that Helly was simply ashamed of the fact that her outie was literally enemy #1. Do I think that will blow up in her face? For sure. But it’s also understandable from her POV.
(Though there is a shot in the trailer of Helena watching Mark and Helly kiss, which could be her taking notes for her subterfuge, but there’s still a long way to go before that’s cleared up).
I personally think it’s much more interesting if it’s actually our Helly, since it not being her would mean that she would no memory of everything that’s happening now, which would be…disappointing? Unbalanced? Them bringing the real Helly in several episodes into the season wouldn’t make sense from a storytelling perspective, since you’d have a MAJOR character with no memory of what’s going on, which would mean she’d have to be…what? Filled in via a ton of exposition?
Also, I think we have to remember that the writers have proven themselves to be leaps and bounds ahead of their audience, which means they’re going to be aware of the audience’s theories. If enough people are jumping on the Helena infiltration theory, then it’s not as smart a narrative choice.
I could eat my hat come next week, but I’m holding on to the theory that, yes it really is Helly R. we’re seeing, just one that’s going to keep her secrets for a bit longer.
#I could be completely wrong#I just hope I’m not#a character can’t evolve if they’re literally not existing#Helly can’t change narratively if she’s not even on screen to do so#severance#helly r#severance spoilers
