The River | PART 1 | Jurassic Sap Hole AU

Sometimes, in nature, a parent will abandon or kill their young. Usually, this is because they know something is wrong, and that the young has a very low chance of survival. Two hatchlings with abnormally bright coats are magnets for predators, especially since one is sickly and lethargic. Surely it would be more merciful to end things quickly, rather than wait for the inevitable, right?

Grandpa and Great-Uncle AU: The Beginning
Summary: An hour after Shermie agrees to go to Gravity Falls, his son asks him to take his grandchildren.
AO3/ Ko-Fi
-_-
An hour after he hung up the phone, it rang again.
"Hello?" Shermie said. He wondered if it was Stanley, wanting to hammer out some last details or canceling the plans. "This is Shermie-"
"Uh, hey dad," Mark didn't sound as steady as he usually did. In fact, he sounded on the verge of tears. Shermie straightened up, concern rising. Mark calling upset was so common by now that his back didn't hurt after two years. "Uh, it's Mark... something happened..."
Ah, shit. With the state of his son's marriage, Shermie had to guess. "Did you or Ariel leave with the kids?"
"No," His daughter-in-law spoke up, her voice muffled. There was a sob in her voice that made Shermie want to hang up and drive over. However, it was ten in the evening and Piedmont was an hour away. "I fucked up and I said something really nasty to Mark and Mason..." There was the faint sound of her blowing her nose. "Mason overheard me saying something nasty about him and Mabel to Mark."
Oh. Oh boy.
"This is why I told you-"
"I know, Dad," Mark said before Shermie could start on again about marriage counseling and divorce. Everyone in the family knew that this relationship was a ticking bomb that would hurt the twins. "We know. That's why we called."
"We were hoping that you could take them for the summer," Ariel said, sounding much calmer now. "We don't want them to get caught up in the middle of us being shitty about each other." The foul language made Shermie raise a brow, but he stayed silent. At least they were taking responsibility and getting the twins out of the blast radius. "I- We know it's a lot to ask..."
"But, I would say yes," Shermie had to interrupt. "But I'm actually staying the summer with Uncle Stanley."
There was a pause. "Really?" Mark said, sounding baffled. "I thought he didn't want any of us visiting because of how dangerous the supernatural stuff could be." That decision had been made after the one and only visit to Gravity Falls that Mark had when he was three and nearly got abducted by fairies. It hadn't solely been Stan's decision, but Shermie had agreed.
"He...He said he needed backup because of how old he's getting and how busy the Shack is, plus how the portal's coming along," Shermie tried not to tremble at the memory of Stanley's voice, thick with so much regret and anguish that he was tempted to drive to where Filbrick was buried and smash his gravestone. "But, he's not doing well mentally. He didn't say it, but I know he's having a hard time, especially with how long it's been." It would be thirty years tomorrow. "I'm going to go to see what I can do, if I can maybe talk him into walking away."
Probably not, but he had to try. Stanford Pines wasn't worth this.
"Maybe the twins might help?" Ariel said, interrupting his thoughts. "You know how excited he got when he visited them in the hospital."
Oh, yeah. At the memory of Stan's elbow in his face, his nose ached.
But Stan had been delighted when he realized that there was a second pair of twins in the family. Shermie's favorite picture was of him holding the twins, their mom hugging him.
"I'll have to ask him. Give me a second." He hung up and his fingers trembled as he typed in Stan's number. Shermie wasn't sure if it was hope or anxiety, but he held his breath as it rang.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Stanley, um...Here's the thing. Mark and Ariel want Mason and Mabel out of the house during the summer," Shermie said, trying not to panic as he said it all in one breath. "I told them that I was going to be visiting you and Ariel suggested I take them with me to-"
SMASH.
Shermie jolted at the noise, dropping the phone. He scrambled to grab it, his heart racing at an uncomfortable rate. "Stanley?!"
"Sure, bring them!" There was another smash. "I've missed the little gremlins. I can take them fishing." Another smash. "I didn't really get to do that with Mark when he visited."
"What are you smashing?"
"Oh, my beer." There was a thump. "Anyway, let me know when you guys are coming. I have to set up the attic and find the spare bedroom and find my cigars." And with that, the line went dead. Shermie blinked before he started dialling Mark's number.
Well, that was a hell of a yes.
"Hello? Dad?"
"He said yes."

So at school I’ve been watching this old show from the 90s called “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and I think it’s pretty neat. Apparently it has a reboot but it doesn’t have that same vibe that the old one brings. Anyways, I decided to make an AU. Let me cook.
So Stan accidentally breaks Ford’s project, Filbrick kicks him out, but instead of telling him he’s not welcome in the household, he just tells him until he makes the family a fortune, he’ll be staying with his aunt in Bel-air. Stan tries to get Ford to stand up for him but Ford abandons him and Stan is forced to drive all the way to his new home. He gets there and explains the situation to his aunt who takes him in with open arms. While Auntie is speaking with Filbrick on the phone, Uncle is treating some scrapes Stan got when his father threw him out. Nothing too bad. Then two kids come downstairs, and you guessed it! It’s Dipper and Mabel! They’re 7 at the beginning of the story and 13 by the end. So everyone’s just sitting in the dining room and Stan gets to know his baby cousins. Auntie argues with Filbrick and hangs up the phone. She tells Stan that no matter what happens, he’ll always have a home here. Stan tries not to cry in front of the twins but he can’t help it. Uncle gently embraces him and everyone has a family hug.
From then on, Stan is trying to balance earning money and bonding with his family. He gets into some sitcom-style adventures with the twins, which include the following in no particular order: Trying to scam people but he endangers the twins (he saves them), signing Dipper up for boxing lessons so he can become strong just like Filbrick taught him only for Dipper to have a mental breakdown over masculinity. Said breakdown causes Dipper to swap places with Mabel for a day to see what being a girl would be like. Mabel accidentally gets a concussion from softball and Stan is tasked with looking after her, and so on.
Stan is absolutely SMITTEN by the twins, they’re like the friends he never had. He’s also super protective of Dipper because of how much he reminds him of Baby Ford. As time goes on, Stan eventually stops trying to make money cause he doesn’t want to go back home. And everything is swell!
Did I mention they live in a mansion?

Dipper and Mabel parents headcanon! I think the dad should be super chipper and optimistic, Mabel taking after him! Enthusiastic about everything, and the hugest heart ever. Their mom would be the one who was a Pines before marriage, being quiet and polite but with a steely core. Very intelligent, maybe a PhD in Marine Biology or something? I love them so much, their issues have to be resolved by the time Dipper and Mabel get back.

Where are the Ponds Twins in Amphibia?
This post contains Spoilers for The Book of Bill below.
So in Season 2 of Amphibia there is a episode titled Wax Museum where Anne and the Plantars meet the Curator aka Mr. Ponds. Mr. Ponds is an alternate universe version of Stan Pines, somethings Frog Soos hypothesizes about. In addition in another episode Marcy is seen flipping through a book that contains an image of Bill Cipher. But something that is notable is the absence of this world's Pines Twins.
So through Lost Legends and The Book of Bill we know a multiverse exists, but Bill tells us something interesting about it. Bill says the following about Dipper and Mabel. "They don't consider for a single moment the sheer improbability that they got to exist in the ONE timeline where they kept all their bodily organs, out of the INFINITE timelines where they were erase, shattered, drowned, frozen, or dismembered before they could make it to 13." So I question, if the Amphibia world a timeline where the Mystery Twins weren't so lucky?

Part 2 of this
Gravity Falls: See You Next Summer
Tumblr media
Ford carefully places a few pieces of irradiated mushrooms onto a stump nearby—deadly poison to mankind, but a delicious treat to most if not all Gravity Falls creatures. (Don’t ask him how he came to possess such substances, but, yes, his brother did have some involvement.) He hurries into hiding, cleaning the lens of his camera as he moves to assure the perfect shot. And now, the agonizing part: waiting.
A hooded figure hobbles into frame some minutes later, taking the bait. Ford steadies his camera—the flash startles the creature and it scurries off back into the woods.
“Damn. Missed it.”
He emerges from the bushes and hurries after the creature. He needs to get solid evidence of the creature’s existence in order to get the funds for their next expedition. The sketches in his journal simply won’t do.

—
The Mystery Shack actually looks better with Soos now running it, though Mabel will never admit such a thing out loud. The ‘S’ in Shack is no longer hanging crooked. The lawn is trimmed with fresh flowers scattered everywhere. The Bottomless Pit now has a safety railing around it. And all the little bumps and bruises formulated throughout the years from Stan running it have nearly vanished, leaving only tidiness and efficiency. They find Stan grumbling about it in the gift shop.
He lifts a small key chain out of a cardboard box. “$4.99 for a stupid keychain? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
“Oh… you think we should be selling them for less?” wonders Melody, observing the merchandise.
“For less?” He rips off the ‘Made in China’ label, then takes a permanent marker and adds a zero in between the four and the nine. “Say troll people made ‘em. Tourists are suckers for troll people. You’ll sell out in minutes!”
Tumblr media
Dad clears his throat to get his attention. Stan turns just as Melody fumbles out a few protests. “Kids! You’re here,” he says, greeting Dipper and Mabel first. He pulls them into a tight embrace, picking them up and swirling them around to emphasize his excitement. His attention quickly turns to their dad. “And Matty, my favorite nephew!” He searches behind him. “Where’s your old lady? Didn’t wanna make the trip up?”
Dad shifts. “Oh, uh, you mean Cait? No, she’s at home, I think…”
“Hey, I get it. Her Stan-in-law can be a little much sometimes,” he teases, squeezing the kids a little tighter, but no one laughs.
Their dad scratches the back of his neck. “Stan, Cait and I… we divorced.” He waits, but Stan looks back at him with a blank expression. Mom and dad separated early last summer and divorced right before Valentine’s Day of this year. Mabel, like always, made them a card for their special day, but threw it out after remembering. She spent the rest of the night crying in her room about it. A sour taste still lingers in Mabel’s mouth at the memory. “You don’t remember?”
Tumblr media
He doesn’t. Probably not fully. Ford says his memory is still a little wonky and will likely stay that way for a while.
“Oh, uh, yeah. That’s right.” And Stan frowns, dropping the kids as if they’re cats who know how to land on their feet. They recover easily. “This ol’ noggin ain’t workin’ like it used to...” He knocks on his head for emphasis. “Divorced,” he mumbles to himself after. “Gotta remember that.”
“Are you sure it isn’t any trouble having them stay with you again for a few weeks?” continues dad, probably thinking his memory problems stem from old age or something, not a memory gun.
Stan ruffles Mabel’s hair. “Are you kidding? Mi casa es… uh, Soos’s casa, too!” And Soos waves at them in the background.

One thing I’ve always been curious about is why exactly the pines twins ended up getting sent to gravity falls Spefficlly.
Like I get sending them away for the summer (esp with the new context. From the book) but why gravity falls? Why not a summer camp or their grandparents or whatever.
Like maybeeeeee they couldn’t afford a summer camp or maybe it was too short??? I just wonder Like did one of their parents (likely their dad) visit gravity falls as a kid???? If so did they know about the werid shit?????? Did they know the town’s people???? Was dippers dad best friends with Wendy’s dad over the summer????
Like it’s not really a plot hole I don’t think as like it wouldn’t be hard to explain it was probably just Stan was the only person able to take them for the whole summer maybe everyone else was busy and he was a last ditch effort.
But I kinda like the idea of young pines dad running around gravity falls. Hell maybe even that’s where he met their mom too. It would be really interesting.

I headcannon that Ford and Bill end up together in every universe just not the one we know of where the Pine twins survive. That is also why our Bill is obsessed with Ford and thinks that he will come back no matter what.
