An astronaut on the International Space Station took these images of the Quirimbas Islands along Mozambique’s coastline near Tanzania’s border on Nov. 24, 2021. The 32 small islands stretch 322 kilometers (200 miles) along the coastline and are partly linked o the coast by mangroves, sand bars and coral reefs. The light blue-green water surrounding the islands highlights the shallow complex of corals, sand and seagrass. The islands are home to an array of plants and animals including 3,000 floral species, with 1,000 being endemic, meaning they are only found on the islands. The islands’ waters host 52 species of corals, 140 species of mollusk, eight species of marine mammals and five species of turtles. Vamizi, one of the largest islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago, is an important nesting site for hawksbill turtles and green turtles. 170 green turtle nests were observed on the island from 2019 to 2020, making it the largest nesting site in Mozambique for the species. https://go.nasa.gov/3xdbWo8

“At 19, I read a sentence that re-terraformed my head: The level of matter in the universe has been constant since the Big Bang." In all the aeons we have lost nothing, we have gained nothing - not a speck, not a grain, not a breath. The universe is simply a sealed, twisting kaleidoscope that has reordered itself a trillion trillion trillion times over.
Each baby, then, is a unique collision - a cocktail, a remix - of all that has come before: made from molecules of Napoleon and stardust and comets and whale tooth; colloidal mercury and Cleopatra's breath: and with the same darkness that is between the stars between, and inside, our own atoms. When you know this, you suddenly see the crowded top deck of the bus, in the rain, as a miracle: this collection of people is by way of a starburst constellation. Families are bright, irregular-shaped nebulae. Finding a person you love is like galaxies colliding.
We are all peculiar, unrepeatable, perambulating micro-universes - we have never been before and we will never be again. Oh God, the sheer exuberant, unlikely face of our existences. The honour of being alive. They will never be able to make you again. Don't you dare waste a second of it thinking something better will happen when it ends. Don't you dare."
- Caitlin Moran

China’s literally been doing this since forever. During the 1400 china had vassals and tributaries as far as and up to Mozanbique entirely bringing gifts and paying their debts. Effectively endebting them to their nation.
This shit ain’t new.

Yesterday morning, I finally made the decision to put aside my anxieties about London and finally venture out. I began my trip (alongside a trustee friend) with a visit to Tate Modern. There I was exposed to various disciplines, which was really my favourite part of the visit. Here are my favourite pieces from my visit.
Untitled 1967 by Malangatana Ngwenya. This was one of the first and favourite pieces from my visit. Ostensibly the painting looked like some dark, humourous painting of monsters, which was what first attracted me to it. However after reading the label, I learnt that it was inspired by the violence that occurred in mozanbique following its battle of independance from portugal. The elongated teeth of the ‘creauters’could highlight the poeple’s violence towards each other. I think that Ngwenya painted these creatures intentionally different and yet so similar to humans, to symbolise our innate violent and animalistic natures.
I was also captivated by the works of Joseph Beuys. Initially attractred towards the typography featuring across the walls, I was inspired by his political message. The idea that important decisions should be made by the people rather than the elected representatives. Though I couldn’t help but sigh a little when I thought about Brexit.
Carry Mae Weems was a more photography orientated artist room which I loved. The red overlays on the archival photographs connoted the violence of the slavery period. ‘You were an accomplice’, ‘and their daughter’ and ‘you became playmate to the patriarch’ . I think the second person sentences emphasises the complexity of the roles of the coloured people during that time.
One think that I noticed was that the art that I favoured was inspired by injustice, politics and human rights.
Barthelemy Toguo, Purification, 2012. Watercolour, pencil, paper.
Another artist I found was Croatian editor and designer Ivan Picelj. I loved the simplicity of his art, the colours and the typography. My favourite piece were the New Tendencies screen prints.
Bruce Naughman’s artist room was a real gem during my tate visit. After seeing so many different artworks, it was different in it’s presentation. The dark room was illuminated by different light signs. My favourite:
Afterwards we made a run or Cork street where we visited Redferns gallery. We got a nice tour of the quint gallery and I found a pastel piece that really stuck in my brain called Leaves at Evening Time by David Blackburn. I think what attracted it to me was the specific name, but the more abstract drawing, and the beautiful colours.
I then went to the Flowears Gallery, where I found my dream study:
We then went into the RA, which was featuring Matisse. We went to the free show called ‘Second Nature: The Art of Charles Tunnicliffe. I loved his watercolour wildlife illustrations. Although they were quite traditional there was something in the composition and the use of vibrant tones that made it, to me, seem more modern. I was also fascinated by the detain in the wood engravings.

The American International School of Mozanbique is fundraising for the victims of Cyclone Idai!! Donate HERE
My heart goes out to the people of Mozambique and Zimbabwe in the wake of Cyclone Idai. Unfortunately, the world has been so preoccupied with Trump and Brexit that little has been said about this terrible disaster in southern Africa. Hundreds of people are confirmed dead and the death toll is expected to climb as more bodies are uncovered. Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi says the death toll could top 1,000 when all have been accounted for. The storm made landfall 1 week ago with torrential rains and 105 MPH winds, what wasn’t submerged was wrecked by the wind and the people who have been displaced are desperate for aid. The Red Cross says this will likely be the worst disaster in Mozambique’s history. The world must rally behind the victims and assure help is received. We must give them the support needed to recover.
