Sometimes when I’m having a bad day I’ll put on the Jupiter Ascending episode of Moviestruck, not only because it’s just a really fun episode, but also because no matter how shitty of a time I’m having, at least I’m not watching that god awful movie.

I just listened to the Hoodwinked episode of Moviestruck and wanted to share a tidbit that I discovered a few years ago. The character Nicky Flippers (and the movie structure) is based on a 1930s movie series called "The Thin Man", specifically the character Nick Charles. The Thin Man movies are one of my favorites and I've watched many, many times. When I rewatched Hoodwinked a few years ago, I couldn't figure out why the frog and the movie ending seemed so damn familiar! Took me a few days to figure it out. I was not expecting to see a 1930s detective movie referenced in my early 2000s animated childrens movie. 😄

Perhaps they ought not to have eaten the dragon. There had been people objecting to it at the time. Surely such meat was poisonous. Perhaps it was even an affront, an insult to some intangible order of nature they ought to honour.
But the city was starving, the siege had gone on too long, and the king's troops were still a week's march away. The scorched earth would be fertile again in time, but right now it was barren. Right now there were mouths to feed. So they changed their crossbows for butcher knives and got to work.
None of the royal commanders asked any questions that could not be answered. After all, their aid had come shamefully late. The dragon's horned skull made a noble gift, a fitting tribute from a triumphant city to its humbled king. Who would have thought to question them?
And none of the townsfolk spoke up, when the first golden-eyed babes were born. Children who grew up barefoot and fearless, clambering over the city's patched and rebuilt roofs like they had no notion of falling, with a strange glitter to their skin when the sunlight hit it just so. No one breathed a word about dragons.
Because soon enough there were deft, young hands taking loaves straight out of the oven, heedlessly lifting iron from the forge, plunging into boiling laundry water. And some of them more wondrous still, wild, warm-skinned youths, with inexplicable knowledge and peculiar remedies.
A blessing, their families said proudly. A blessing after so much hardship. Which it was, in its way. This city would never fear dragon fire again.

Rolling with Difficulties and a breakdown of project creep
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rolling with Difficulty is a live play 5e D&D Planescape podcast. Sophia, who plays Dani (does the Moviestruck podcast and is Overly Sarcastic Productions editor/producer) made several jokes about precious moments figurines in Season 3 so I wanted to make precious moments figurines of the characters. I started that in January of 2023 when Season 3 was playing and I posted it on April 1 of last year.
Since I made those I thought I might as well make minis and since I wanted to reduce the number of packages I held off on sending the precious moments to the RWD PO Box. And since I wanted everything, other than the precious moments figures(because I showed them off while making them), to be a surprise I didn't post any of them. Austin the DM thought that Intellect devourers are too goofy with dog legs so he gave his spider legs which I though was cool so I made it and printed a few. @comicaurora, who plays Kyana, posted some concept art of an ancient drone that appeared for a chapter of Aurora and I was inspired by the one she labeled as dumb so I modeled it. I thought it would be weird to only send one concept and not the one that appears in the comic so I did those too. They got posted earlier and separately since they are not RWD.
By the end of Season 3 I had modeled the original crew and Dani's robot cat Plug and printed a mini of each(plus and extra Dani for season 1 red Dani) for their player and Austin. I though I should send a Plug in scale with the Precious Moments figures and that the rest of the crew would want them. So I printed one for every cast member.
And then between seasons 3 and 4 they did a Weird Little dude one shot giving official art for every crew member's companion. One of Finbar's pixies Old Bay, one of VR-LA's mechanical bugs Drone, and Kyana's pseudo dragon Sunny. So I modeled all of them and printed one for their player and one for Austin. I was trying to paint and send out all them before Season 4 started so I wouldn't have to model Vhas. Well Season 4 ended in September 2023 and I'm posting this now. Season 5 was announced to be the last about the crew of the Per Aspera and I was still procrastinating on painting them so I made peace with them not being painted and just sent them. Austin told me he opened the packages right before recording the last episode of Season 5.
And I ended up needing to send them in two boxes despite not wanting to send more than one being the reason I delayed sending them.

Edgar Wright - Filmmaker Retrospective with Sophia Ricciardi of MOVIESTRUCK! - Episode 269
This week, after a bit of a break for our live show for the 48 hour film project in Pittsburgh, we are back to look at a filmmaker that has managed to constantly merge genres with a massive talent in using all the tools of the trade to visually tell a story.  We're talking about Edgar Wright.  The filmmaker behind Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Baby Driver.  A technical wizard and a master of filmmaking choreography.  However, a massive talent like Edgar Wright requires a massive talent to assist in the review, so we are joined by fellow film podcaster, Sophia Ricciardi of MOVIESTRUCK!   We pull back the curtain to take a hard look at this filmmaker and attempt to answer the question....can John come up with a  million dollar catch phrase like "snoochie boochies" to include in Brian's next film.

Hey Red. What's RwD?
Rolling With Difficulty, an episodic DnD podcast I'm on with Indigo/Sophia (OSPod producer, I forced her to watch Jupiter Ascending for her podcast Moviestruck) and several other cool people. Set in the Planescape, PCs crew a spelljammer and have wacky episodic adventures that definitely aren't deeply scarring. Season 2 starts in July, so now's a good time to catch up!

Thanks you @hiddenvioletsgrow @igotthisaccountunderduress and @brb-on-a-quest for tagging me!
1. The last podcast you listened to? with reasons.
Before I started FIAT90 again this year I literally only ever listened to the Overly Sarcastic Podcast and occasionally Bible In A Year with Fr. Mike Schmitz, but lately I've slightly broadened my horizons with The Jordan Peterson Podcast (good for the gym for some reason), Talk From Superheroes, Moviestruck, The Babylon Bee, and The Psychologists Are In (Psych recap podcast). I still wouldn't really call myself a podcast person, I'm more-so a "person who needs audio entertainment even when not allowed to use YouTube or listen to Secular music". The OSPod will always be top tier though. The last individual podcast I listened to was Talk From Superheroes' pod on Madame Web.
2. What was the last fanfic you read? What did you like about it?
I'm currently reading Keeping Me Alive by MartinaKL. As a grammar-nerd the writing style can be a bit difficult at times, but I think that that just shows how great the content is since I'm still reading it. Modern AU Grishaverse has my whole heart.
3. Your favorite discord server?
I don't really use discord TBH. I guess the fiber-craft server I'm in that I check occasionally?
4. Open pinterest and show the first thing it recommends you
so the first one it this Tumblr post but the first one I saw is this granny square robe that I really like
Tumblr media
5. If you’re comfortable, show me something from your notes app!
Tumblr media
I started a re-write of Be Our Guest to be about Mormonism a few months ago and then got bored and never finished it
6. Show us who you last gave a like to on Tumblr! And why?
@hiddenvioletsgrow on this post lol. Before that it was some random blog whose post I liked while scrolling through the Beck x Jade tag last week.
7. Show us a picture that's in your gallery that you are proud off/like/are comfortable sharing.
Okay the context behind this is that I made this for a House Competition for my school where we had to make a "silly-ad for the Iliad" (@thoughts-of-caly I feel like you'll appreciate this). At the beginning of the year we played a game where we had to sell a made up product and my House, Sinai (whoo!), sold a "self-cooling blanket".
Tumblr media
this image sprung into my mind fully-formed like Athena popping out of Zeus's head.
8. Final question, what was the last YouTube video you watched?
The Rebirth of God: Psychology and Promise | Jamie Wheal | EP 485 from Jordan Peterson
@possumsandprose + anyone else who wants to!
Thanks for the tags @dangerously-human and @womaninwinter
1. The last podcast you listened to? with reasons.
Podcasts are actually the worst thing ever, sorry.
2. What was the last fanfic you read? What did you like about it?
The last fanfic I read I dnf'd because I didn't like the content. But the one before last was SO good, it was called there's a touch of you in me by cameliawrites and tough_n_dumb. Such a beautiful fic about 5 times someone showed affection to Kaz without touch and one time Kaz offered it himself. I was kinda emotional reading it.
3. Your favorite discord server?
The 2020 chaos server with my now IRL besties which is barely used now is probably my fav. Nearly everyone there is a good friend of mine and I see them all at least once a year.
4. Open pinterest and show the first thing it recommends you
oop it's sad Nina

listening to moviestruck podcast has just proved my point on a ton of stories having romance for no other reason than allo's expecting it to constantly be a B plot. It doesn't have to make sense Allos just think the two main characters should be kissing by the end fsr because that's apparently what happens.

I'm listening to Moviestruck and this is a recurring theme. The old movies that hold up and the newer movies that feel like a refreshing return to form all have that sincerity behind the quippyness, while the modern movies that fall flat just don't, and often times go out of their way to undercut any moment of genuine emotion with a joke which understandably leaves the viewer with a bad taste in their mouth. The Princess Bride can make a joke about the man in black's arm strength after the genuinely tense moment when the rope he's climbing is cut because that joke doesn't feel like it's making fun of the audience for caring about the scene immediately preceding it
The problem with the hyper-capitalist, "capitalize on nostalgia and beat a familiar concept into the ground" approach to storytelling is that by its nature it sucks the life and fun and emotion out of its concepts, leaving any potentially heartfelt moments drowning in stale quips that leech anything meaningful away
And none of this is stuff that hasn't been said before either! A lot of it has been said by Red and Blue and Indigo and her other podcast guests (go listen to Moviestruck, it's very good). It just bears repeating because it's heartbreaking to see an entire medium dying due to a singleminded focus on profit over actual emotion and care
I need people to stop blaming the death of movies on “quips”. A quip is just a funny line of dialogue. That’s all. Like I just saw a post talking about quips and the death of movies and brought up Pirates of the Caribbean as an example of a better movie and yes it is but also that movie is FULL OF QUIPS. I just rewatched The Princess Bride. It’s all quips. Every single line. And it’s a masterpiece.
Movies suck when people don’t care about the art they’re making. That includes them not caring about their quips. Which is why a lot of comic relief dialogue ALSO sucks now. But the problem isn’t that funny dialogue exists.

Hello, this is a moviestruck question: I can't help but wonder why, y'all being so fond of subjecting Indigo to absolutely terrible movies, how is it that nobody has thought to put the gem that is The VelociPastor (2018), absolute iconic piece of complete nonsense, on the podcast? Is it possible that you didn't know about it? If so please acquaint yourself with it at your earliest convenience you will not regret it, it's too funny for any regrets.
Bad movies are like crime scene investigations for me. Something happened here that went terribly wrong. I want to pick it apart, reconstruct the scene of the crime and figure out what confluence of factors led to this tragic outcome. What went right, and what key elements went wrong?
Velocipastor KNOWS it's bad and is doing it on purpose. It's not interesting to dissect if it's actively trying to suck!
