B&O E8m 1435
B&O E8m 1435 eastbound at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in January 1938 as EA No. 54 (c/n 766) on EMC Order E188A. The B&O received the only EA's and EB's built (six of each), the EA's were numbered 51-56 and the EB's were numbered 51x-56x. The Second Diesel Spotters Guide states that all were rebuilt to E8m during 1953 (EMD Order 7507A). Number 52 had been transferred to the Alton in 1940 (which the B&O controlled at the time), eventually becoming GM&O 100A. All except 100A were scrapped during 1969-1971. As built, this locomotive was powered by two Winton 201A 12 cylinder prime movers producing 1800 horsepower. The rebuilt units were rated at 2000 horsepower due to reused components.
It is pictured heading Train 10-2, the daily Washington Express, departing Chicago's Grand Central Station at 11:35 AM CDT, scheduled to arrive at Washington DC Union Station at 7:05 AM. According to the June 1965 edition of the Official Guide, the coach fare from Chicago to Washington was $22.15. It appears that Train 10-2 continued on to Baltimore after arriving at Washington DC (I'm not sure about the routing to accomplish that). Equipment listed is as follows: Washington - Chicago Express Trains 9 and 10 Daily; Between Washington and Chicago, Sleeping Car 90, 101, 14 roomettes, 4 Double Bedrooms (Sleeping cars may be occupied at Washington until 8:00 AM EDT and at Chicago until 7:30 AM CDT); Reclining Seat Coaches, Washington to Chicago; Dining-Lounge Car, Chicago to Pittsburgh; Dining Car.

Redskins Coach Ron Rivera Selling His Charlotte Home for $1.3M
Alika Jenner/Getty Images; realtor.com
While occupied with the NFL Draft, Ron Rivera, former head coach of the Carolina Panthers, is also strategizing a sale of his home in Charlotte, NC. The brick beauty can be yours for $1,335,000.
Known as “Riverboat Ron,” Rivera was let go by the Panthers in 2019, and has set sail for Washington, DC, for a new post with the Redskins.
Rivera picked up the property in 2011 for $1 million, the year he joined the Panthers. The spacious 5,442-square-foot build offers five bedrooms and five bathrooms, and is in “one of the best lots in the gated community of Heydon Hall,” according to the listing details.
For Panthers fans, the home contains a few special touches.
Inside, you’re greeted by an entry with curved stairs, leading on to the living area and a formal dining room.
The kitchen includes high-end JennAir double ovens and cooktop, a built-in fridge, and a beverage fridge. It also has an island with a built-in nook for the dog bowl—possibly a custom addition.
The Riveras are dog lovers and recently held a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Charlotte, where they adopted their adorable pups.

The master suite on the main level includes a bath with heated tile floors. A custom wine cellar and study with French doors includes a Panthers logo on a stained-glass window.
Upstairs is a media room, a separate office with built-in desk and cabinets, and additional storage.
Outside, the covered terrace offers another surprise for the next owner: an outdoor TV with an autographed cover from Rivera.
“I asked him to autograph it when movers were finishing up,” says the listing agent, Bryan Criminger with Allen Tate Realtors-Charlotte-SouthPark. “He added ‘2013 and 2015 NFL Coach of the Year.’ The TV and cover are included in the sale for the buyer.”
Criminger notes that many of the home’s winning features are outside.
“The outdoor living space with the saltwater pool, outdoor kitchen with grill, pizza oven, warming drawer, beverage fridge, and custom fire pit are standout features of the home,” he says.
In addition, the nearly half-acre property comes with a separate apartment with a kitchen, over the two-car garage.
And, because the sellers have since vacated the well-kept home, it’s move-in ready.
Coach Rivera recently dialed up another real estate play. He purchased a $2.3 million Pebble Beach vacation home in February. Located on a country club, the 1920s, fully renovated three-bedroom retreat is near the golf course and the beach.
River, 58, played nine seasons for the Chicago Bears, where he won a Super Bowl ring with the 1985 team. After retiring as a player, he began his coaching career in 1997.
He coached in Carolina from 2011 to 2019, and racked up the most wins for the team of any of its coaches, including a Super Bowl appearance in the 2015 season. Despite his success, he was fired midway through the 2019 season.

Anti-Flag And Stray From The Path Announce Massive Co-Headlining Tour With The White Noise And Sharptooth
Just in case you were wondering when the perfect anti-trump tour was going to be announced -- you know, a tour where you could go to find unity and strength with fellow showgoers but also release massive amounts of aggression -- well, today is that day.
Just announced this morning, political punks Anti-Flag and hardcore movers and shakers Stray From The Path will be teaming up for the Silence = Violence Tour.
The co-headlining trek will kick off January 16th in Detroit and feature support from fellow disruptive noisemakers The White Noise and Sharptooth.
When asked about the upcoming tour and why it’s so important for these four bands to come together on the same bill, Anti-Flag shared a very important message saying:
The mission of the Trump regime has been clear from day one, the normalization of bigotry. Dangerous rhetoric has become dangerous policy that has put countless in harm's way. It is the responsibility of all to be on the side of the marginalized and scapegoated and that is the goal of the aim of the Silence=Violence Tour.
No longer can we allow people to sit on the sidelines in the fight for social and economic justice. Inaction makes you complicit. If oppressed people demanding space and dignity in our society is what is making you uncomfortable, perhaps it is because you are a bigot or fascist? We must spread empathy, not apathy. Our aim is to do that at every show we play across the US.
Our society can maintain a status quo of violence and hatred, go back to masking that same hatred and violence in neoliberal wrapping paper, or forge a new society that is inclusive, egalitarian and just for all. It is our optimistic view, even in these dark times, that the latter is within reach.
Each band on this tour is predicated upon an ethic of caring about more than just themselves. To carve out a few hours in a day, in each city, where we can be comfortable in our own skin… free from racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia, bigotry of any kind… this is not an opportunity that any of us tread upon lightly. We’re excited to throw these small celebrations of unity in hopes that it can leave all that attend with a sense of community and organization that will help fuel our collective ability to create positive change and leave things better than we found them.”
Tickets for this powerful, can’t miss tour go on sale tomorrow and can be found here. In the meantime, make sure to pre-order Anti-Flag’s forthcoming album Amercian Fall and pick up a copy of Stray From The Path’s Only Death Is Real here. For tour dates and locations, see below.

On-demand delivery and moving app Dolly hits $1 million in revenue and expands into SF and DC
The Seattle-based on-demand delivery and moving service, Dolly, is rolling out its services in San Francisco and Washington, DC, as it eyes a broader national expansion in the coming months after hitting a milestone of $1 million in monthly revenue earlier this year.
The company, which raised $8 million in a 2015 funding round, currently operates out of Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston.
On-Demand Moving App Dolly Raises $8M Series A, Expands Services To Seattle
What separates Dolly from moving services like the recently launched Moved, it its focus on single pieces of furniture or select small items that can fit in the back of a pickup truck. Dolly isn’t for big house moves, but rather getting that couch, cabinet, or dresser from the furniture store or the flea market to your home or apartment.
The company currently has 5,000 contracted movers or delivery representatives on its platform and is hoping to add between 200 and 400 more in San Francisco and DC (along with planned expansions into Los Angeles and Orange County) within the next six months.
The company said it hopes to hit the top 30 U.S. markets by the summer of 2019.
“Over the past four years we’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t in terms of the markets we serve,” says Mike Howell, Dolly’s chief executive, in a statement. “We could have expanded a long time ago but we wanted to be smart about where and when to grow the business. Our approach has been intentionally methodical and data-driven.”
Dolly attributes its growth to partnerships with retailers like Costco, Big Lots, Lowe’s and Crate & Barrel, and that data-driven approach which has seen the startup analyze more than 100,000 moves in the markets that it enters.
“We understand that most people do not need a Dolly every day, every week or even every month,” says Howell. “As a result it doesn’t make sense for Dolly to heavily subsidize a first use-case like many subscription businesses do.
Dolly was launched in Chicago in 2013 by co-founders Howell, Jason Norris, Kelby Hawn and Chad Wittman. the platform uses an algorithm to set prices for jobs with initial prices ranging between $50 to $85.
And while the company is hoping to bring the on-demand marketplace model to moving services, it’s running into some of the same problems that have hit larger marketplaces like Lyft and Uber in ride-sharing and Airbnb in rentals.
The company has been exchanging lawsuits with Washington state over whether it needs to apply for a license to operate its services in the region. Washington says that Dolly needs to adhere to regulations governing moving services, while Dolly says the laws on the books are archaic and haven’t kept up with changes in consumer behavior and demand.
No matter the outcome, Dolly is pushing ahead with a nationwide rollout. As logistics and last mile delivery become more important, demand for services like Dolly’s should increase.

Delta Takes the Iconic 747 Jumbo Jet on a Farewell Tour
Delta is taking its 747s on a farewell tour this week to mark the aircraft being retired from U.S. passenger service. Delta Air Lines
Skift Take: The death of the Boeing 747, which introduced long-haul air travel to the masses, has at times been exaggerated. While Delta will retire the jumbo jet in the U.S., British Airways, Korean Air and Lufthansa all continue to fly the plane.
— Dennis Schaal
For a half-century, Boeing Co. mechanics in a sprawling factory north of Seattle have riveted together aluminum panels into the familiar hump-backed form of the 747 jumbo jet. Test pilots then put each new plane through its paces on an adjacent air strip before sending it off to roam the globe.
This airplane, more than any other, made long-range travel into a mass-market phenomenon. And on Monday, one of the jets born here is returning home.
Delta Air Lines Inc. will fly a 747 filled with employees and customers from its Detroit hub to Boeing’s plant in Everett, Washington. It’s the first in a series of farewell flights to Delta hubs this week marking the end of the airliner’s U.S. passenger service. For those aboard, it’s a rare opportunity to touch down on the same runway from which the first 747 lifted skyward on Feb. 9, 1969.
On the ground, Boeing workers who helped build 747-400s like the returning Delta plane will celebrate an aviation milestone. But there’s poignancy to the moment: With just 14 unfilled orders in Boeing’s backlog, and four-engine aircraft appears to have fallen out of favor. The future isn’t bright for jumbo jetliners such as the old 747.
For a morning, at least, Delta and Boeing will be setting aside their differences to bask in nostalgia. Just last week, Delta ordered 100 jets from Airbus SE, Boeing’s rival. And a trade fight between the U.S. planemaker and Bombardier Inc. threatens to foul up a separate deal that’s key to Delta’s fleet plans.
There will be those aboard Monday’s farewell-to-passengers flight who came of age with the 747. The planes’ hulking wings—and, for children riding on Pan Am in the 1970s heyday, those captain’s wing pins—symbolized access for millions of us to foreign lands not easily reached by telephones of the era. A generation came to learn the aircraft’s quirks, such as the jet’s bulbous nose and swept wings and the vibrations during the take-off roll that caused over-stuffed luggage bins to pop open on early models. There was also the fascination, never lost for some, of ascending a staircase to ride high above the world in the “bubble,” the deck behind the cockpit.
The 747 was the first twin-aisle airplane, with more than double the capacity of the largest commercial craft at the time. Delta’s 747s, introduced on a maiden voyage in 1970 from Atlanta to Dallas to Los Angeles, brought the first overhead luggage bins to the airline, as well as the first in-flight audio channels, dubbed “Deltasonic,” which featured the Beatles, Burt Bacharach and Beethoven. The planes could hold 370 passengers, including 66 in first class and six in those penthouse seats up the stairs.
The design made it literally a wide-body, which became a moniker for long-range aircraft. “It’s one of two seminal airplanes,” said George Hamlin, an aerospace consultant, a former airline and aerospace executive and an aviation history buff. The DC-3, the other iconic aircraft on Hamlin’s list, was a silver piston-engine made by Douglas that helped airlines evolve from mail carriers to people movers in the 1930s and 1940s.
But it was the long-haul capability—a 6,000-mile reach—that made the 747 transformational. “The range of the plane allowed it to go anywhere in the world,” said Michael Lombardi, Boeing’s corporate historian. “It was at that point in history where all of humanity had the ability to get on a flight.”
The peak year of the 747 came in 2002, when the airplane completed 33,000 flights hauling 10.5 million passengers on 50 airlines. All told, 1,540 Boeing aircraft have been delivered since 1969.
“It was the plane that shrank the world. That is the legacy of the 747,” Lombardi said. “Joe Sutter would tell you the same thing.”
The farewell tour for the Delta 747 also serves as an elegy for Sutter, who died last year at 95. The blunt, sometimes fiery tempered Boeing engineer was known as the “Father of the 747” for his role in shepherding the plane to market in the 1960s against steep odds. Juan Trippe, the autocratic founder of Pan American World Airways who was then the most powerful person in aviation, wanted a single-aisle design with two decks. Sutter believed that the configuration would doom the big plane, so he held out for the single-deck, twin-aisle design. His team, nicknamed the “Incredibles,” brought the plane to life in less than two and a half years, while dealing with balky engines and the prospect of financial collapse.
Boeing created the plant in Everett—the largest building on the planet by volume—just to build the 747, and the same facility eventually turned out such wide-body successors as the 767, 777 and 787 Dreamliner. Airplane sales were already slumping by the time the 747 debuted in the turbulent 1970s travel market, but Lombardi said the period proved fertile for Boeing’s development of next-generation improvements: cockpits operated by two pilots instead of three, flight computers and glass screens to replace anode dials.
Monday’s event in Everett actually marks the second time Delta has retired its 747 fleet. The Atlanta-based carrier took delivery of the first of five 747-100s in October 1970, a period when U.S. carriers were starting to experiment with wide-body jets on domestic routes. The planes featured a Delta “penthouse” behind the upper deck that could be reserved by private parties or by five or six customers who purchased seats together. Even with features such as “deep carpet, soft lights, patina of rosewood and walnut, stereo sound,” as Delta described the private lounges in a brochure, the new planes struggled to make money and were eventually returned to Boeing.
Boeing eventually created the best-selling 747 model, the -400, which was delivered first to Northwest Airlines in 1989. This started the fleet that would eventually become Delta’swhen the airlines merged nearly two decades later. Delta retired the prototype on Sept. 9, 2015, after it had logged 61 million miles.
Delta became the last U.S. carrier to fly the passenger version of the 747 once United Airlines retired its jumbo fleet in November. Outside of the U.S., however, there will still be plenty of 747s carrying passengers: British Airways, Korean Air and Lufthansa are all big operators.
But over the past 10 years, sales of the latest Boeing 747 model have dwindled, and the jet’s future, to the extent that there is one, will be as a freighter, said George Ferguson, aerospace analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. United Parcel Service Inc. holds all but three of the unfilled orders left for the 747, as well as options to order an additional 14 planes.
“It’s never going to be a big seller again, that’s absolutely done,” Ferguson said of the 747. “It can hang on for a while, but it’s a sunset.”
