My trophy value exceeded my military usefulness.
- Lord Mountbatten
Louis Mountbatten, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, in full evening dress with decorations. Decorations are worn at certain formal events. They are usually only seen at military daytime occasions, or highly formal and ceremonial evening events.
Historically the most formal variant of full evening dress or "white tie" included knee breeches. They are worn only with evening pumps. Lord Mountbatten here wears, among other decorations, the Order of the Garter, the highest order of British chivalry, displaying not only the sash, but also the garter itself on his left leg, requiring the breeches to make it visible.

Am I the only one okay that Harry’s kids might not besmirch the Mountbatten-Windsor name? Let them call themselves Sussex. It really would distance themselves more from the royal family. I honestly don’t care if they do it legally or not.

This is Mountbatten. I have given him many, many gifts. Like a nose. Like eyebrows. Like a mustache. I gave him a new suit. And even a brand-new apartment.

And yet he keeps crying at me.

Few families can boast of not one but two saints among their ancestors, a great-aunt who was the last tsarina of Russia, a father who was Grace Kelly’s pinup, and a grandmother who was not only a princess but could also argue the finer points of naval law. Pamela Mountbatten entered a remarkable family when she was born at the very end of the Roaring Twenties. As the younger daughter of the…
