mha characters that are aro for CANON reasons (read: in which I reach increasingly further for canon evidence):
(Disclaimer: some of these can be evidence of characters being something else than aro (or ace) but this is my post and I can do whatever I want + /hj to /j to everything on there, when I say I start reaching I start REACHING. These are headcanons!)
Aizawa Shouta doesn't ever show romantic (or sexual) interest in anyone and is actively put off by Ms Joke hitting on him and the idea of getting married to her
All Might has NO experience with women according to Horikoshi (could also mean he has experience with men but y'know)
Ashido Mina really wants to be in a relationship but never fell in love (cupioromantic moment)
Both Bakugou Katsuki and Todoroki Shouto hide from girls crushing on them near the end, don't ever show romantic interest in anyone or get anxious or flustered near girls, Katsuki especially apparently never cared about girls (and vice versa) before and and Shouto specifically doesn't notice when he's hit on.
Iida Tenya is never interested in girls or men and is significantly more focused on both his studies and his friendships
My favorite headcanon: Uraraka Ochako's love for Izuku seems founded more on her admiration and people telling her she must like him (because boy and girl etc) than in actual romantic love, and she connects a lot with Toga (who also loves people in a non-conventional way)
Midnight doesn't have a romantic partner or anyone she regularly flirts with despite being a very beautiful and desired woman, and doesn't seem to have had any kind of romantic relationship with the three boys more or less her age she hung out with a lot (the rooftop trio) (she can also be seen as a cliché of aroallo person who only cares about sex so I'm claiming her).
Pixie Bob's obsession with finding a partner is giving "I've been told all my life that I HAVE to get married and I don't want to so I keep looking for the perfect match and not finding it because the man I'm looking for doesn't exist because I won't ever fall in love". Because by god you can't tell me the cute blonde catgirl isn't finding a boyfriend.
All For One only cares about his brother, I'd even argue he's aromantic asexual aplatonic etc. a-everything except familial and idk. quirkic. attracted to quirks.
Mount Lady is aro for the same reason as Midnight but because I think it's implied or canon that she's dating Kamui Woods, she's lower.
Midoriya Izuku is green so he's obviously aromantic and most of his flustered reactions to girls seem based more on shyness (and an obvious reaction to getting boobs shoved in his face) and sexual or aesthetic attraction than romantic attraction (he also has a very romcom view of what being boyfriend girlfriend is, ie. his reaction to Toga's confession)
Aoyama Yuuga's definition of love (according to his comment on Ochako being in love with Izuku because she was thinking "what would Deku-kun do?") is very weird and seems based more in things he was told or saw in fiction than feelings he would have felt himself.
Yoarashi Inasa is just so fucking weird with friendships and social cues he looks like he's trying to navigate the world while making absolutely sure NO ONE misinterprets him, which makes him both very aro and very autistic in my book
Kurogiri is literally a bunch of mist with little free will whose purpose in life is protecting this one boy, he's all the As.
Endeavor married for insane reasons and never even cheated on Rei after he sent her to the hospital (which a lot of men his caliber would do)
Ms Joke makes the idea of dating Shouta a joke and I think that's great. She's also green.
Miruko's chill and doesn't give a fuck, she's a fighting person, very Katsuki-coded in that regard I fear. She also works alone without an agency, which is giving aromantic for no reason other than I Said So.
Toga Himiko is a queer allegory that is generally interpreted as bisexual and biromantic but I think she can be interpreted as aroallo as well (way to love that’s seen as impure and unholy etc etc, notions of consent – taking people’s blood and hurting them without their consent which is for her a way to show her love, most of her attraction seeming physical or aesthetic rather than romantic, her parents telling her to repress repress repress instead of satisfying her desires in a safe way, the scene where she’s biting her wrist in her sleep???? etc etc)
Twice never had a lot of friends and never had a lot of female friends and when he feels gratefulness and care for Toga it outwardly seems romantic because he doesn’t know what’s romantic and what’s not and hasn’t had a lot of female friends
Dabi is giving aromantic aplatonic who only really loves his family but due to circumstances can’t love them healthily and ends up just hating them (the most intense feelings of love he shows are always towards Enji or Natsuo, and his apology to Shouto makes me think Shouto is also included in this – no evidence for Fuyumi and Rei but I can do what I want. He clearly cares for Twice and Toga too but it presents very differently, even after he’s revealed himself and doesn’t need to be as secretive).
Shigaraki Tomura probably just doesn’t give a shit I’d say. He’s pretty apathetic when he isn’t fighting or angry or like doing his hatred thing, but he clearly cares about his teammates.
Fatgum is foodpilled and studentpilled. He really loves food and he really loves his students he doesn't need no romantic relationship.
Jirou Kyoka takes a bit to warm up to Denki so I think she's demiromantic actually
Bruce (the third user of One For All). He just has such third wheel vibes.
Intelli Saiko because why would she bother with romance, it's so unpractical and illogical
Despite asking for boys' numbers all the time and being very aware of romance, Utsushimi Camie looks like she could NOT CARE LESS. aro
The fact that Hawks plays up the flirting with his fans is giving aromantic to me – obviously heartbreaker aroallo stereotype but I think he could also be ace, the aroallo part isn’t that important, it’s just that he’s always pretending. It’s giving still in the closet. Also I know he’s young and busy and Horikoshi doesn’t really put that much casual romance in MHA but it’s so funny that there isn’t even a sliver of a girlfriend implied in his timeskip. Hawks is Married To His Job.
Star and Stripe is also absolutely married to her job. Also, lots of guys around her, lots of important and admired male figures in her life, and yet not a single crush from her. Points. Aromantic lesbian
Nezu is a fuckass mouse I highly doubt he's attracted to humans in any way
Gran Torino is a single old man which is enough for me (though because I hate that fucker I think it'd be funny if women just hated him)
Where Is Shimura Nana’s Husband.
Muscular only likes to kill, he doesn’t need romance nor sex, his only desire is Killing People and fighting. Same thing for Moonfish, he only wants to eat people (mood my guy)
Geten is very hyper focused on making his quirk stronger, he doesn’t seem to really have any relationships.
Overhaul just fucking hates people
Again, Kendo Rappa only cares about fighting.
So so sad because I like his girlfriend but Natsuo is giving marrying to get away from his father
Koda Koji just had the vibes. He's so aroace to me. (aro Koda brain vs kodajirou brain fight)
Monoma Neito is such a fucking hater he just has to be aromantic
Wash is a washing machine
Honorable mentions:
List of characters whose only argument is they never show romantic attraction and don't talk much about romance or get flustered: Shouji Mezo, Sato Rikido, Tokoyami Fumikage, Shinsou Hitoshi, Yaoyorozu Momo, Sero Hanta, Hado Nejire, Togata Mirio, Shirakumo Oboro, Present Mic, Seiji Shishikura, Ryukyu, Gang Orca, Shishido, Centipeder, Ectoplasm, Hound Dog, Thirteen, Vlad King, Mandalay, Tiger, Lady Nagant, Mr. Compress, Tsukauchi Naomasa, Todoroki Rei and Fuyumi, Melissa Shield.
List of characters whose only argument is "they're green so they're obviously aromantic": Asui Tsuyu, Ibara Shiozaki, Tokage Setsuna, Kamakiri Togaru, Midoriya Inko, Ragdoll, Burnin, the Sludge Villain (I’m taking all I can get), Mustard, Ordinary Woman.
Bonus: characters that I can't make aromantic no matter how hard I try under the cut:
Gentle and La Brava, for obvious reasons. I feel like making them not love each other is like illegal.
Kudo and Yoichi. By god my brain will not accept it they're in love.
Amajiki Tamaki. I'm sure he could be aromantic but I can't let go of the Mirio and Nejire crushes (which are so real and true to me)
Yuyu (Nejire's friend), she also looks way too much like she has a giant crush on Nejire. Lesbian moment.
Best Jeanist and Edgeshot, they're giving high school sweethearts.
I put them in honorable mentions but I just have to mention Gang Orca and Shishido somewhere because the one baseball OVA made me think they're like the pseudo-enemies/rivals who argue all the time but somehow fight extremely synchronized when needed and ONLY fight each other because they're the only ones Worth It etc which is. Y'know. eye emoji etc etc
Sir Nighteye is literally in love with All Might
David Shield is literally in love with All Might
No really did you see David's wife? This man went and found a blonde blue eyed wife when he couldn't marry his blonde blue eyed best friend. His daughter looks like an All Might secret love child. I know whenever Dave hears Melissa call All Might uncle he dies a little inside because he wishes she could call him Dad too and he could call Toshinori his darling husband and
Rock Lock is happily married and I could never take that away from him
Spinner is green so I can kind of see him as aro but he’s giving madly in love with Shigaraki so much
Magne has a crush on Dabi in one of the Smash strips which is too funny to ignore I think she’s madly in love with him. And she’s right
I like kirimina so fucking much I genuinely struggle to come up with aro Kirishima headcanons. I think he could be quoiromantic but I also think he’s madly in love with Mina so I don’t know.
Stain is literally in love with All Might
Ending (guy who attacked Natsuo) is literally in love with Endeavor
Garaki Kyudai is literally in love with All For One (“I miss your eyes” guy is so fucking devoted. The true doomed yaoi of MHA)
I know Rody is in love with Izuku he just has to be.
To me Shindo Yo also has a crush on Izuku but also he's canonically dating Nakagame Tatami which is also cute.

Hawks: "Aren't we all just dying for free time? I just want everyone to be happy, you know." Tokoyami: "That ambition is what I, too, wish to realize." Jirou: "He has a rockin' vibe even when sleeping, doesn't he!!"
Nanzo-in Temple is home to one of the largest bronze statues in the world depicting a reclining Buddha, called Shaka Nehan (Nirvana). The statue holds ashes of Buddha and two adherents, which were gifts from Myanmar as thanks for Nanzo-in's donations of medical supplies.

Ashido: "The squid are dancing!!" Tokoyami: "The squid, such speed!" Aizawa: "For drying a large amount of squid at once, it's a really reasonable method." Tokoyami: "A magnificent display of stormy turmoil!!!"
This is a fixture at Yobuko Town's morning market which rapidly dries squid by rotating in circles. The Japanese name, ikaguruguru, uses an onomatopoeia for going around in circles so you could call it a "squidy-go-round." Tokoyami uses the Japanese term for the German aesthetic Sturm und Drang. By the way, the term for dried squid, surume, is also used to mean something that grows on you over time. It's one of the most popular snacks in Japan!
Nagasaki
Tumblr media

Aoyama: "Merci for the million dollar nightscape~" Asui: "The night views from the sky are exception!"
Nagasaki is considered to have one of the top three best night skylines in Japan. You can visit Mount Inasa's Observatory to see it for free, but they got something even better!
Kumamoto
Tumblr media

Sero: "Bakugou... did you do that!?" Kouda: "The mountain is burning!" Shouji: "Quick, put it out! Bakugou, you help too!" Nedzu: "Hang on! Dry grass being burnt down helps new grass sprout. This nurtures the animals as well. Humans and nature in symbiosis, that's what burning the fields represents!" Bakugou: "Hey, you bastards, APOLOGIZE!"
The city of Aso lights its mountain on fire every year as part of the Aso Fire Festival, a coordinated effort between farmers to replenish the fertility of their soil. My favorite part is that Katsuki doesn't deny that he blew the mountain up in flames... he's saying, "see, I'm helping, all right!!"
Ōita
Tumblr media

Kaminari: "Now then, who's getting in!! To soothe your travel weariness!" Iida: "STOP! Do you want to be boiled alive!? Swimming in the Blood Pond Hell area is prohibited!!" Kaminari: "So this is a 'bitterness of denied entry' type hell, then! (cry)"
They are trying to bathe in the Blood Pond Hell in Beppu City, where iron oxide and magnesium oxide mix and get pushed to the surface to turn the water blood red. Beppu is known for its Eight Hells, hot springs that are so hot (often greater than 200 degrees Fahrenheit), they are meant for viewing rather than bathing--hence their being called a "hell," not a "hot spring!"
Miyazaki
Tumblr media

Yaoyorozu: "The myth of Princess Toyotama and Yamasachihiko exchanging love letters has been passed down in Aoshima, so there is a legend that if you send a love letter with this postbox, your love will come true." Kaminari: "Make a postcard for me right now, Yaomomo!" Mineta: "Make me a hundred! It's my lifelong wish!!" Yaoyorozu: "It's just one apiece for someone special..." Postboxes in Japan are red, so this one, called the "Yellow Postbox of Good Luck," is unique. The couple Yaoyorozu mentions are from the Kojiki and Nihon Shiki, which contain some of the earliest written records of Japanese myths and ancient history. Poor Kaminari... he just asked for one!
Kagoshima
Tumblr media
All Might: "Continuing to watch over everything for all eternity!! This here, this is the Symbol of Peace!!" Izuku (mumbling): "It's a well-known fact among fans that All Might loves Yakusugi--" Izuku (out loud): "I'm thrilled we can all go together!! Right, Kacchan!!?" Kacchan: "I... Don't drag me into this!! (pleased, though)"
Yakusugi refers to cedars of at least a thousand years old on the island Yakushima, where there are dense coniferous forests with many old-growth trees. The most famous is the Jōmon Sugi, which is estimated to be at least 2,000 years old. Did Kacchan follow them on their tree tour, trying to not be noticed, and Izuku called him out on it~? Or did they companionably embark all together while he put up a grumpy front? Hee!
Okinawa Region
Okinawa
Tumblr media
Endeavor: "Shouto, how is it? How is the soba!?" Todoroki: "Okinawa soba is tasty." Endeavor: "RIGHT!? SHOUTOOOOOOO!! (joy)" Todoroki: "Let me eat in peace."
Unlike Todoroki's beloved mainland soba, which is made with buckwheat flour, Okinawa soba is made with wheat flour and is closer to udon noodles.
Aaand that's Day 6, the last release is the grand finale!

You've talked about AFO giving Quirks to 1-A and 1-B. What about giving AFO Quirks to some of the other students?
What secondary quirk do you think all for one would give shinso?
Tumblr media
Mongoose-Infrared: Helps her track targets, gives her some utility and fits perfectly with her snake-like appearance.
Shindo: Shock Absorption: Not a lot to say about this one. Just something useful to counter Shindo's biggest weakness.
Itejiro-Springlike Limbs: Since his Quirk requires him to throw stuff, let's just turn his arms into cannons to make up for his low power output.
Nakagame-Spearlike Bones: This gives her some much need offense and defense and would make for a killer combination considering how she push and pop her body.
Shikkui-Rivet Stab: Not only would this give Shikkui some much needed offense and mobility, but it works great with his Quirk. He could extend the range of his contact Quirk and tie things together with his rivets.
Inasa: Air Cannon: This may sound redundant with "Whirlwind", but I do think that this could give him even more options and power with his control over the wind, like condensing the air down or making an arc of wind.
Mora- Storage: This does give Mora some utility, but I really want to see it used with "Extend-o-Hair". Like he's pulling out random objects or people from his massive locks or consuming whole enemies with his hair.
Seiji-Super Regeneration: "Meatball" works around Seiji's supply of flesh. Why not remove the biggest weakness of the Quirk and give Seiji even more flesh to work with? Seriously, this combination would be a nightmare to deal with.
Camie- Warping: Something to help Camie in her support role, turning the battlefield into a stage where she could move and obsure whoever she wants. Maybe she could even use her Quirks together to throw her illusions around.
Mirio- Shoulder-Mounted Jets: Not only does this give Mirio an option to move around outside of "Permeation", but could enhance a lot of the tactics he uses with his power considering he mostly uses it for high speed body checking.
Nejire- Wings: "Wave Motion" doesn't have a lot of weak points or drawbacks a Quirk could work with. I went with "Wings" because it could help her fly without wasting her energy and gives her more points to use with "Wave Motion".
Tamaki- Hypertrophy: Considering that each of his alterations are still part of his body, he should easily be able to make any of them giant sized, increasing the power of whatever option he has. Why settle for chicken wings when you can make massive chicken wings?
Mei- Tool Arms: This doesn't have any real synergy with her power, outside of maybe making smaller tools with "Zoom", but I think having whatever tool she needs and the dozen arms to use them would help a lot with her speed and precision when tinkering.
Shinso- Radio Waves: So this would help with Shinso's skills, taking out electronics to better hide and forcing people to rely on vocal communication, but I'm curious to see how it works with his Quirk. It may even be able to get around the electronic weakness of his power.

A little etymology journey starting from Bugaeva's Handbook of the Ainu Language:
Inasa ([Japanese place name]) < Ainu inaw-san ‘the place where inaw [are offered]’. Attested in: MYS 14.3429.
She further describes it:
Direction of borrowing: Ikegami (1980) has made a detailed investigation of inaw (SA) ‘shaved wooden offering’. The inaw is the most fully developed in the Ainu culture. Among the Nivkh and the Tungus ethnic groups, only the shaved portion without a shaft is used. In the Uilta culture and the Nivkh culture in the southern areas, inaw with a wooden shaft are used, but considering the distribution, this is under influence from the Ainu culture.
I looked up what inaw/inau are, because clearly this is an Ainu religious concept, which Wikipedia has a page on. The page gives the following etymology from Toshirou's 「サハリンの言語世界 : 単語借用から見る」:
The word inau appears to be a loanword from other languages in the region, probably the Orok language of Sakhalin (cf. Orok illau < *ilawun). It is most likely ultimately related to Manchu ila-l ᡳᠯᠠᠮᠪᡳ (ila-mbi) "to blossom" and ilhal ᡳᠯᡥᠠ "flower." The Nivkh word inau ~ nau is most likely a loanword from the same Manchu-Tungus source via Ainu [...] ."
According to Ikegami's "Remarks on the origin of the Ainu word inaw", the Orok/Uilta word illau is likely derived from *ilawun -- a verb stem *ila- and a "substantive-forming suffix *-wun which means instrument, etc." Supposedly *ilawun refers to "a stick which puts forth flowers" (weird translation), and it would make sense for *ila- to be similar to Manchu ila-l "to blossom" -- or a "blooming stick" in reference to the long shavings that hang off the tip of the stick/staff. Whenever the ritual wood-shaving stick was loaned(?) into Ainu culture the term for it came along bearing that exact meaning. I'd be interested to see some comparative religion stuff between Orok/Uilta and Ainu use of the inau.
And while Japanese Shinto has similar 'stick with droopy things on top' things going on (the oonusa and the gohei) -- an interesting question arises about how Shinto might relate to Ainu religion in that way -- it seems at least according to Bugaeva that the Ainu concept of the inaw only survives in Japanese as the place-name Inasa. My Google-fu only leads me to Inasa, Shizuoka and Mount Inasa in Nagasaki. There are several mid-Honshu locations with suspected Ainu placenames so Shizuoka's Inasa makes sense as an Ainu etymology. However, Mount Inasa (稲佐山) is probably just from some relation to rice (稲 ine), and I don't think there's any evidence the Ainu ever went as far South as Nagasaki.
The more interesting direction to me is Ainu into Nivkh. Proto-Nivkh borrowed the Ainu word *inaw as "ritual staff" (sourced from Wiktionary but ultimately from Fortescue's Comparative Nivkh Dictionary). I'm not sure if that is supposed to be a specific ritual staff (in this case an inaw-shaped one) or just any staff used in a ritual. Fortescue lists *inaw as "ritual staff (shaman's) [made of a bunch of wood shavings, an Ainu word -- cf. Black 1973: 12]".
That citation by Fortescue is Lydia Black's "The Nivkh ("Gilyak") of Sakhalin and the Lower Amur" in Arctic Anthropology Vol. 10, No. 1 (1973). A short excerpt from that chapter, though it mentions "inau" in different rituals no less than 25 times:
When a Nivkh cuts down a tree, on the stump he reverently places inau - a small wooden stick cut into strips of shavings at least at one end. Inau is believed to preserve the soul of a thing, animal or person. It is a symbol of lifegiving (Shternberg, 1904b:20).
Keeping that description in mind with all the other uses of inau which Black describes, it seems there is simply a wealth of (comparative AND specific) religious thought to dive into. Consider this description of Ainu inaw practice from the Inau Wikipedia page:
With the exception of funerals, for which they were never made, inau were an important part of rituals involving kamuy. Because only men were permitted to participate in religious rituals besides the bear ceremony, only men could make inau. Before building a house, four inau and one chiahorokakepe were placed where the hearth was to be built.
Now consider this excerpt from Black:
Construction of a new winter dwelling was a cooperative enterprise, concerning all resident lineage members and even af fines. […] Such construction, representing commencement of a new life, so to speak, was an important event fraught with symbolic significance and was accompanied by a variety of complex rituals. Construction at every step required ritual action (Shternberg, 1933:314; Taksami, 1961:159-164). Some of these rituals were conceived as "strengthening the house." An example of this type of ritual was the final act of the construction: the placement of two poles decorated with carvings of symbolic significance, one at each end of the house along the longitudinal axis. The poles were joined by a string on which were hung representations of the sun (female, in Nivkh world view), the moon (male), and bunches of wood shavings called tsakh or chakh and often referred to in Russian literature by their Ainu name inau, which were used in all Nivkh rituals. This "strengthening of the house" was believed to lessen the danger of penetration by dangerous or hostile spirits (Shternberg, 1893:20; 1933: 317; Taksami, 1961:163). This contraption with all the emblems was never removed, but was left in place until it deteriorated from natural causes.
Interesting correlations between inau, housing, and gender, and actually correlates with the use of male pronouns in my first quote from the paper -- I didn't read the whole thing but it seems inau are specifically associated with men in both Ainu and Nivkh culture. However it seems the Nivkh eschewed the Ainu's negative association of inau and funerals:
The Nivkh are not afraid of the dead or dying. […] On the second day [of funeral preparations] all men prepare wood for the funeral pyre. […] [After preparation of the logs,] all is ready for the final act in which the transition from the world of the living to the world of the dead will be accomplished. All those present eat, and, when the meal is finished, a sled is brought into the house and the corpse lashed onto it. Four men carry the sled with the body to the burial ground. In carrying this bier they use one hand only, as in the other they hold the ritual sticks, inau. A dog, the pryski, who has been selected either because it was the person's favorite dog or had a ritual association with him or her, and in whom for a while the small soul of the deceased will find abode, is either placed on the chest of the corpse or tied to the bier and led along (Shternberg 1933:327; Kreinovich, 1930a:105). After the cremation, this dog will occupy a place of honor in the house, be treated with special kindness and after a certain specified time span will be given to the lineage of wife-takers.
Anyway, the rabbit hole stops there. Black's is an interesting chapter, but it's very long and I'm not reading all that -- I hope I'll finish it someday! Comparative Ainu and Nivkh religion is certainly another journey to make later, too. Seems like a small but passionate research community.

The Scars of War
On 9th August 1945 at 11:02 AM, an atom bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki, killing thousands of people upon impact. It laid the city low and caused a devastating fire. For years, the repercussions remained - from the increased risk of cancer for many generations of Japanese to the still-standing ruins of Urakami Cathedral. So, when I see nations blithely threaten to use nuclear weapons against their enemies, I cannot help but feel a deep-seated anger at the callous disregard of precious life.
Atomic weapons attack indiscriminately. Putting civilians in danger. Putting children in danger is never the right thing to do.
While I understand the fear of being attacked (because of my ethnicity, I have become highly sensitised to racial attacks), nothing justifies the slaughter of a people.
Humans, unfortunately, have repeatedly killed each other since time immemorial. And we will continue to kill each other if we are so motivated whether that be fear, greed or hatred.
Seeing the devastation, and the video testimonies of those who experienced the bombing, truly brought home to me how frightfully scary what such a future would bring. And while I don't want to be too preachy on my blog posts, it's not something you can forget when you read the harrowing stories of the survivors as they tried to locate family and friends in the aftermath.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The start of our second day in Nagasaki saw bleachpanda and I head out to Mount Inasa Observatory to take in a view of this vast port city and appreciate its grand size. After taking a streetcar to Takara-Machi, we walked to Fuchi shrine in order to take the cable-car up to the summit.
While bleachpanda had made it clear she wanted to minimise the number of shrines she visited on this trip to Japan, our visit here was out of my hands if we wanted a proper appreciation of the sprawling city. Up we went, climbing up the stairs to the very top of the tower there.
And in all honesty, it boggles the mind that a city could face such destruction and still be rebuilt. True, it's been nearly 80 years or so, but it speaks as well to the human spirit to endure such tragedy. Much like how many Chinese suffered through mass starvation during the Great Famine and the Cultural Revolution. Or, for example, the Potato Famine in Ireland.
Somehow, though, humans have risen above.
Still, I can't help but feel sorry for the Paelstinians. Their treatment, since the end of the Second World War, has been horrendous. And instead of allowing Israel to have its way, or giving it a light slap on the wrist, more nations need to step up. Actions do have consequences but continuing a cycle of hatred between multiple generations will only lead to further loss and grief.
As per the words of Gesicht, before he fell (yes, I recently finished off watching Pluto): "Nothing will be born from hatred." And it is oft said that one should dig two graves if one seeks revenge. Even after vengeance has been enacted, no solace can be found.
Only by rising above and proving oneself capable of letting of man's fragile ego can a people move on and reach for a better future. As in the case of Japan following the bombings.
From atop Mount Inasa, bleachpanda and I headed down to the Atomic Peace Park. It was a cold overcast day but it was an excellent walk to soak in the ambiance. Of note was the bronze statue. Sitting near to the hypocenter of the explosion, the statue has its right hand pointing above while the left hand extends to the left in a symbol of eternal peace. The placement of the legs also symbolise both meditation and the initiative to stand up to rescue the people of the world.
It's a striking image and I've included it down below:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the Peace Park, bleachpanda and I headed towards the hypocenter and then to the Atomic Museum. The entry here was a mere 200 Yen for each of us. Down we went, reading about the tragedy that was the bomb. What was interesting to me was how the aftereffects of radiation on the human body was little understood at the time. It was as people slowly sickened that many realised the extent of the horror that came from the atomic, be they keloid scars or the other pain and conditions that took away people's livelihoods as they struggled to return to normalcy. A little bit like the aftermath of COVID-19, although nobody is keen to talk about it.
From the Atomic Museum, bleachpanda and I headed to a nearby restaurant: Horaiken for some Nagasaki champon! This noodle dish is a regional cuisine and it is covered in cabbage along with a mix of seafood atop thick noodles. It was so much, I didn't even manage to finish it. Probably because we also ordered some prawn siumai.
By the time we finished our meal, it was nearly 3 PM. Bleachpanda, being the paranoid person that she is, wanted to prebook our JR reservations to Hiroshima. So, off we went to the ticket office at Nagasaki JR station. There, we managed to catch sight of a local performance involving a red dragon chasing after a golden ball. When it was over, we headed into the bowels of the station and after sorting our transit, we decided to try out the "local" Seattle Coffee featuring everyone's favourite Cinnabon. Bleachpanda, by the way, had never tried Cinnabon before but I think she liked it.
Once we had stuffed our faces, it was quite late in the afternoon. Still, it didn't deter me from ushering us to Kofukuji Temple. Kofukuji is a Zen Buddhist temple and its main hall was constructed in 1632. It was built in a purely Chinese architectural style with "cracked ice" carved lattices, one of the last of its design.
This was all fascinating to see and read about as we walked around. More importantly, it goes to show the influences on Japan that helped establish its primary religious beliefs.
From Kofukuji, we headed to Megane Bridge, or Spectacle Bridge if you go by the English translation. It is said to be one of the oldest stone arch bridges in Japan and it is so named because of the reflection of the bridge in the river essentially looks like a pair of spectacles. A picture is below:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we had taken our obligatory tourist photos, bleachpanda and I strolled down to Hamano-machi and the Don Quijote there. It was our very first Don Quijote on this trip in Japan and while I accompanied bleachpanda as she looked at what was on offer, I couldn't help but get the theme song stuck in my head. It's just so good!
To bleachpanda's chagrin, I was began singing the song as we headed back to our hotel at Shinchi Chinatown, wherein she threatened to cause me bodily harm, and possible smothering. It didn't happen, of course, since bleachpanda wouldn't hurt a fly but I suppose it's the done thing if you have an annoying friend who knows exactly which buttons to push.
I am a chaos gremlin, okay? I can't help it! My sense of humour is like a six-year-old child. And if you say something innocuous annoys you, like booping you on the nose, I will do it!
NEVER reveal your weaknesses to me, internet. Never. I will only ever use it against you for my own amusement.
I suppose it's the monkey in me.
At the hotel, I decided to try out the spa, even as bleachpanda was committed to getting in some laundry done. Though I tried to convince bleachpanda to join me, as waiting for the laundry would take an age and a half, she feared someone would walk in and catch her nude body.
Something to note if one ever travels to Japan: their spas and onsen don't allow the wearing of swimwear. Everyone is to wear their birthday suit only. Oh, and if you have a large tattoo that you can't cover, you also aren't generally allowed inside.
Before going into the spa/ onsen, you're also expected to thoroughly wash your body and hair.
But since I was in the spa at about 6 PM, and everyone was eating dinner, I was left on my lonesome. It was barely 5-10 minutes before I grew bored and jumped back out, unable to sit with my thoughts for an extended period without some form of stimulation.
Still, it was good to tick the experience off my list. And after all the endless walking we had done thus far, it was nice to recuperate my energies in the spa. Thus ended our second day in Nagasaki.

Nagasaki
Friday 8 March
We have sailed around the bottom of Kyushu island, Japan’s most Southerly island and are now on the western coast at the town of Nagasaki.
Nagasaki was the site of the 2nd Atomic Bomb that effectively ended WWII on 9 August 1945 so is steeped in history, albeit modern warfare history.
When the bomb was dropped with the enormous loss of life it was said that nothing would grow again in at least 70 years, now 73 and a bit years on, the City is flourishing and indeed some plants started growing again only a few weeks after the bomb was dropped.
Nagasaki tram
We are moored close into the town and as we have an afternoon tour booked, take a stroll around the immediate area with it’s quite ancient looking tram a few shops and Oura Catholic Cathedral, the oldest wooden church built in 1865 which withstood the bomb albeit with some damage.
Oura Catholic church, Nagasaki
The shops in the area near the port were selling Japanese cartoon memorabilia or so it seemed, nothing to get excited about.
Our tour this afternoon is to Mount Inasa which has a commanding view of the valley.
From the observation deck at Mt. InasaP overlooking Nagasaki
The coach drops us at the Cable Car station where we ascend to more or less the top as the last bit is by lift to a walkway through a car park.
Another lift takes you to the top although if you are able, the 79 steps up the broad circular stairwell is achievable in about the same time.
The cable car attendants are typical Japanese friendly staff, bowing to you and pointing to where the cable car is going.
One of the reasons why the atomic bomb damage over Nagasaki was not as widespread as Hiroshima is the geography with the blast being confined to the valley.
Japanese housing estate – steep hillside variety
Housing was scattered around us by the Cable car, very steep steps to the houses and no car parking.
Japan has an issue with housing as no one now wants to live in such housing, preferring modern houses so these are hard to sell.
Japanese shrine
Once down from the Mountain, we viewed some of the memorials and shrines although for once in Japan, there was not a lot of English in the descriptions. (Generally, they had a good translation.)
We then continued our tour stopping at The Peace Park. Unfortunately, the Peace Statue and the water fountains at the Peace Park were both under renovation.
Peace Statue undergoing refurbishment
It was somewhat poignant that nearly all of the memorials in the Peace Park were from countries with Communist sympathies.
The Peace Statue dates from August 1955, the 10th Anniversary of the Bomb.
The elevated right hand points to the threat of Nuclear weapons and the outstretched left symbolyses tranquility and World Peace.
I am not sure what I was expecting but it was not as dramatic as I had anticipated.
Interestingly, a crew member on the tour with us said she had visited the Kamikaze museum the previous day which she found very moving with the other side of the war being told.
Original parts of the church not destroyed in 1945
Our final stop of the day was at the Peace Museum. Sadly not enough time was allowed here and in any event, with no internet for about a week, advantage was taken of the good Internet there.
The Museum was approached from across a road from a park which is directly below where the bomb exploded and of course has many reminders.
Part of the church that stood there still remains and a new statue erected at the 50th anniversary.
Description of the 50th Anniversary monument
Once inside, the museum there is a great deal to see including the church clock that was stopped as the Bomb went off and has been kept in it’s condition as it was at the time, a reconstruction of the church and of course many photos of the devastation that occurred.
A very moving experience even after so many years. One of the most poignant comments though was from the tour guide who when talking about the bomb said that as a result, Japan surrendered.
That must still hurt a very proud nation to have to say that.
Photographs of the devastation
We are back to the ship now, passing the one pillar of the San Shinto Shrine that remained after the blast.
This was an exceptionally moving tour and experience.
Let us hope that this is a salutary lesson to all countries and that devastation like this never happens again. I think I will remember this tour for a very long time.
Entertainment tonight was from the Headliners with a new show based on The Greatest Showman – a new show but the same type of dance routines as we sail off towards Hong Kong.

WH,,,WHAT ABOUT POCKY CHALLENGE HCS WTH YU, INASA AND HAWKS???
∆Headcanons∆ Yu Takeyama (Mt. Lady), Inasa Yoarashi, and Keigo Takami (Hawks) participating in the Pocky Challenge with their S/O
Mt. Lady
This girl is ready for the pocky, she loves all types of junk food, pocky included
She didn't expect you to keep the entire box away from her, so she was quite… annoyed in that aspect
Plus, you were teasing her by eating it right in front of her!
When you put the stick in your mouth and raised your eyebrows, she didn't know what was going through your mind until it clicked
"You wanna play the pocky game, right?"
"That's the entire reason I have the stick in my mouth, silly."
Yu loves a challenge, so expect her to bring her A-game
The two of you won an equal amount of times, with either Yu getting dangerously close to your lips or her accidentally 'getting distracted' by something and causing you to win
You were finally down to the last stick of pocky in the box, but this time Yu stuck it in her mouth instead of you
"Loser buys the winner dinner."
"Deal."
The two of you bit off enough on each end for your lips to connect, which neither of you really wanted to move until a few seconds later
The two of you did end up going to dinner, but you paid just because of how much you love her.
Inasa Yoarashi
Also loves pocky, but the entire concept of the pocky game goes over his head
You were supposed to have one end in your mouth while someone else had the other in their mouth and see who could bite off more? Sounds like an interesting concept
He agreed to do it upon your request, but had no idea what he was doing
"You want me to eat this end of the stick and you eat the other?"
"That's how it works, so yeah."
He dumbly only eats off the very end of the stick like you said and ends up letting the rest of it fall (since you were counting on him to keep going)
You told him not to take what you said literally, and that he was supposed to try and meet you in the middle
Take two: he gets far enough to literally smash his lips against yours and bites your lip in the process
"I'M SO SORRY Y/N!"
"Okay Inasa, one more time…"
Finally, the third time, he managed to do it completely correct, not biting your lip and sensually kissing you, even going as far as to cup your cheeks in his large hands
The two of you spent the next half hour finishing off the rest of the box, repeating every last action most of the time except for a few (when he forgot and you had to remind him)
You have to admit though, the kisses were nice
Hawks
When you give the birb a box of pocky, he's definitely expecting to play the pocky game
He was excited for sure, since he already knew your plan ahead of time
Is purposely going to stuff multiple sticks in his mouth to see if all of them could work at the same time to play; heads up, they don't
"Kei, please get all of the pocky out of your mouth so that we can play!"
"We are playing! Just with all of it in my mouth!"
You have to take matters into your own hands and pull all but one piece back into the box
Playing the game was the easy part, but keeping the box away from Keigo so he didn't try to stuff the pocky in his mouth again was the hard part.
He liked to nibble away slowly just to pretend like the two of you were eating in slow motion, and when your lips would almost connect he would break off
"Sorry, let's try this again!"
"I think you're just doing this on purpose…"
The last few sticks ended up the way that you were intending for them to go, finally ending up with your lips connected for a sweet kiss
Even if the box was completely empty by then, it didn't stop him from giving you even more kisses
Next time you'll be the one buying the boxes of pocky.

I might sound somewhat like Stain here but I do not like the idea of the “hero rankings”. Heroes getting paid is fine, heroes doing product endorsements is fine, but the rankings seem to encourage unnecessary competition and disunity in the Pro Hero community when they should be as united as possible. What do you think?
Yea, the ranking system is flawed. I understand that it was created in part to decide how much pros should be paid and serves as a motivator for heroes to solve as many incidents as possible (remember that most incidents during the All Might era were solved almost immediately because there were so many pros who wanted the credit), but that system invites internal competition, grudges, and glory seekers into the equation. Of course, there’s strength in numbers, and I’m sure there are plenty of heroes like Endeavor who haven’t exactly been motivated by the best of morals (regardless of any future redemption arcs) but still produce amazing results and save thousands of innocent lives. But the massive amount of people heroism attracts only creates more possibility for internal conflict, and the people in the BNHA universe have started to take notice.
That’s why the provisional license test was reworked to weed out those who did badly working in teams or tried to seek glory. The people in charge knew that without a single pillar holding society up they would need a stronger and more cohesive band of heroes on the front line. The time for inner competition and petty arguments is over. If the hordes of new villain groups are to be kept at bay, the pros need to be willing to put public safety over their own ambitions.
Dismantling the public hero rankings is one way to accomplish that. I understand if they continue to go on in private for payment purposes (because of motivation and compensation for injuries/trauma), but even then it would be much more efficient if they would only pay based on brackets instead of individualized numbers. Under that system, All Might and Endeavor would both be payed the same, and some of the animosity might have subsided (probably not all of it, because, well... Endeavor). Meanwhile, the lower ranked pros could still be motivated to take on more jobs while maintaining a sense of unity with their bracket. That would encourage teamwork and positivity, which would create an even large strength in numbers despite the numbers remaining the same.
Point being, the existence of a public ranking system is keeping the hero community from being as collectively strong as it could be. Yes, a large percentage of heroes are probably individually stronger because of their ambitions, but the individualistic tendencies that that creates can be self destructive as well as just plain destructive.
Inasa during the provisional license exam. He was so convinced that Todoroki was seeking glory that he purposely tried to stop him from becoming the one to defeat Gang Orca. That clouded judgment nearly compromised the rescue mission and almost got Shindo burned. If he would have been less concerned about Todoroki’s motivations, he could have evacuated everyone and ended the exercise sooner (I’m not trying to demonize Inasa or erase Todoroki’s involvement in that argument, but Inasa’s troubles are more closely related to this particular issue). This translates to the real world, where we know that heroes sometimes swoop in at the last minute and steal the glory from others who have been fighting longer. Looking at the fight from chapter one, things could have gotten really bad if Kamui Woods hadn’t reacted as quickly to Mt Lady’s sudden appearance. Imagine if he’d attacked her on accident. There could have been loads of collateral damage, Mt Lady could have been injured, and the villain might have gotten away (again, not hating on Mt Lady, I’m just stating what could have gone wrong). I’m sure this has happened at some point in the BNHA universe, and it probably had the opposite effect on the pros’ careers that they wanted.
So yes, I agree that the compensation system needs to be reworked. Jobs on which public safety relies on should not be treated as a game. However, I do believe that compensation based on results is required (at least to some degree) in order to make sure that enough people want to pursue a career in heroics as well as to motivate the current pros to resolve conflicts quickly.
Thanks for another fun ask! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
