Nine Lives (8) The Home
FF.net | Ao3
Chat Noir snuck into Master’s Fu’s home after his patrol. It was only 10pm, but the lights were off and Fu was fast asleep, snoring away.
Adrien dropped his transformation in the backroom by his little homework table, and opened his laptop.
“Cheese?” Plagg asked, hopeful.
“Oh, right, sorry.” Adrien winced and dug around in his backpack. “There’s only one wheel left. So don’t eat it all until we can get more tomorrow.”
Plagg groaned, but begrudgingly agreed, if only for his own benefit.
Adrien got to work on his homework. He had an essay due tomorrow that he was sorely behind on. He would have finished it earlier, but other matters took precedence.
“Pretty good speech you gave,” Plagg smirked, sitting on the top of his laptop. “Really got the media off your back there.”
“It was just a thank you speech for the mayor. I had to, there was no way I wasn’t going thank him. It’s a 1000 euros a month.”
“As long as you keep up with patrols and akumas.”
“Well yeah, obviously.”
“I can see why people would be protesting you.”
“They aren’t protesting me specifically. They just don’t want me to get paid.”
“Yeah, they want you to save their lives for free.”
“And you see how silly that is? You were the one who said I should turn Chat Noir into a living.”
“I did, didn’t I? Interesting...”
Adrien rolled his eyes. “Okay, I’ll bite. Why do you think they’re protesting?”
“Well, in their eyes, Ladybug and Chat Noir allowed a citizen to be killed. And now they want money?”
Adrien frowned and leaned back against the wall. “I didn’t think about that.”
“Obviously.”
“Well, it’s a done deal. Paris will get over it eventually.”
“What does Ladybug think about it?”
“She doesn’t mind. She said if I need money, it made sense to ask for help. Fighting the Akuma is hard work.”
“Was she jealous?”
“I offered to split the check, but she turned it down.”
Speaking of checks, he pulled out the one Mayor Bourgeois had given him. Thankfully, it wasn’t a giant check like the ones they gave at sweepstakes. But it was clearly from the mayor, and the memo line read ‘To Chat Noir.’ So what was he supposed to do? Open a new bank account as his alter ego and then transfer money to his normal account? He rubbed his head. Secret Identities sucked!
“Ladybug is just too noble to accept money for her hard work.”
Adrien rolled his eyes. “Or, it could be that she lives at home with her parents, and she gets an allowance?”
“Please, what teenager passes up the opportunity for money?”
“The kind that recognizes that their friend needs help, now will you drop it? I have an essay to write.”
“Fine, if you won’t admit your guilt, then you can just suffer.”
Adrien groaned. Plagg, being his Kwami, had a tendency to pick at his nerves just so, and pick up on the emotions he wanted to ignore. “I keep lying to her. And if there’s anything I remember about Volpina, it’s that Marinette hates liars.” He was quiet a moment and thought back to that day. “I think I understand why she was angry though. Lila flirting with me, and lying about an affiliation with Ladybug to do it. Hmm, that makes sense.”
Plagg cleared his throat. “And?”
“And...I’m scared. I keep lying to her, but I know when this bubble bursts, it’s going to be ugly.”
“You don’t think she’ll understand?”
Adrien sighed. “I...if it were me, and Marinette faked her death to continue being Ladybug, and she didn’t confide in Chat Noir...I might feel betrayed.”
“If the situation was like that, then why would she confide in you? She’s the one who has been insistent on secret identities. Even after you found her out.”
“But this is an exception Plagg! I faked my death! That’s not something to hide from your partner! Not if you trust them…”
“But you did, and now you have to deal with it.”
Adrien frowned, falling silent. Then, “I thought you were thousands of years old. I thought you were supposed to unleash divine wisdom upon me.”
“You want wisdom? Fine. Wait. Like Master Fu said about the molten glass. You saw her bedroom walls. Eventually, she’ll move on from Adrien. Not totally, ever. But enough that it doesn’t sting anymore. That’s when you should tell her.”
“How long will that take?”
“Who knows. A few months? Weeks? Years? I know it took me three years to grieve the loss of my love.”
Adrien softened. “Your love? I didn’t know you were in love once.”
“Yeah, a real beauty. An aged cheddar packed in charred whiskey barrels. It sounds so simple, but the place that made it burned to the ground in the 1500’s. It was awful.”
Adrien scoffed. “Why did expect anything else…?”
“But now Camembert is my true love. I think I might love it more than I loved that whiskey cheddar.”
Adrien leaned his head on his knuckles, just listening to his kwami.
“The thing is, until I lost that Whiskey cheddar, I never would have loved Camembert. You following me?”
“Wait, are you saying that now Adrien’s out of the way, she’ll start loving Chat Noir?”
“No, I’m saying she’ll start to love you.”
“But—“
“New wisdom!” Plagg interrupted and zipped out of the room, startling Adrien for a moment. He returned a moment later, with a necklace in his grasp.
“This is my mom’s necklace?” He raised his eyebrow. It was simple, despite the wealth the Agreste’s had. His mother had once told him this was the first necklace Gabriel gave her when they got married. Just a thin chain and a pear cut diamond.
“These little flat parts are called facets.” Plagg explained.
“I know, I’m not five.”
Plagg hissed, perturbed to be interrupted during his ‘wisdom’.
“Uh, sorry, please continue.”
“Thank you. Each facet is cut very particularly to reflect light, and the gem looks different from each facet.” He dangled the jewel in front of the desk lamp, sending a bunch of sparkles across the table surface. “Adrien was one of your facets, but it wasn’t you. Your father made sure that Adrien was just what everyone wanted to see. Chat Noir is just a facet as well, a part of you that is constantly filled with adrenaline and confidence. Emile…now the name is different, but he’s the most you you’ve been. The boy sitting in front of me is the gem. Ladybug has to see past the facets to see you.”
Adrien stared at his kwami, and then at the necklace. After a beat, he put it on, hiding it under his shirt. “I didn’t know you knew so much about diamonds. I thought your expertise was only in cheese.”
“Cats like shiny things, silly boy.” Plagg stated, matter of factly. “Now I’m all wisdom-ed out. Hit me up in another ten years, and I’ll have another cheese analogy for you.”
Adrien scratched the kwami between the ears, his soft spot, and quiet purring filled the space. “You’re my best friend Plagg, you know that right?”
“Yeah yeah, you know how I feel about mushy stuff.”
“Oh, I know.” Adrien smirked. “But I just thought I’d remind you.”
“So I might as well remind you about your essay.”
“My essay!”
—
The next day, a bleary-eyed Emile walked to school. It wasn’t the first time walking, but everyday was as strange as the first. As Adrien, he’d never been allowed to walk anywhere alone. Though, he was honest enough to admit getting a ride to school in the mornings was nice. But he was beginning to enjoy his walks, as sleepy as he was.
He stopped at a cafe, and bought two coffees. One for him, and one for Marinette. It was a small gesture, one that he hoped was not too bizarre for Emile.
Emile would be stepping up his game. Chat would try to refrain from visiting her every night, despite knowing who she was. Because more than anything, Adrien wanted her to love him for who he was. It had been wonderful knowing that she loved Adrien for the gem shining through, so to speak, and not just the pretty face in the posters. But there was even more to him than that. A goofy, fun-loving, dramatic side to him that she was missing out on.
He entered the classroom a few minutes before class started, delighted to see his angel was there already, with eyes half closed.
“Good morning Marinette,” he chirped happily. “Do you like coffee?”
She blinked up at him in surprise. “I…do on occasion.”
“Would a free cup from a friend be an occasion?” He set the cardboard cup in front of her, watching with glee as her eyes widened and her mouth formed a very kissable ‘o’.
She smiled at him. “I will gladly accept your coffee! Thank you! I’m actually having a hard time staying awake this morning.”
He slid his backpack onto his seat and then sat on his desk, facing towards her, a very improper action, if he did say so himself. “I’m the same way! I’m such a night owl it’s a disaster. I used to wake up really early.” For photo shoots. “But now I can barely manage to make it to school on time.”
Alya leaned over the desk and mock whispered. “I don’t mean to alarm you, but I think you and Marinette are soulmates.”
“Alya!” Marinette flushed madly.
Emile just laughed, loudly, and without restraint. A very Chat Noir-esque trait.
Marinette’s face flushed a little more as she observed him.
“Oh please, it’s only been like two weeks since you showed up, and you already have a crush on the baker girl? Please, get behind all the other loser boys in this school.” Chloe spoke clearly, apparently ready to take Emile down. She hadn’t succeeded yet, since he seemed impervious to her ‘perfection’.
Emile turned his, literally, award winning smile to her and sang, “Jealous?”
Chloe sneered. “Ugh! As if I’d ever want you to like me, Quasimodo!”
“Reverse psychology, classic. Maybe someday you will win my heart, Chloe Bourgeois.”
Chloe scoffed again and turned her head with a little ‘hmph!’
“Uh...Emile?” Marinette asked shyly.
“Hmm?”
She was speaking quietly, so he had to lean in the hear her. “I...do you remember when we talked about Adrien? The boy who...”
He quickly stopped her from having to say it. “Yes, I remember.”
“Well, I...I kind of...really liked him. And since the whole...” she trailed off, her face pink, but her eyes downcast.
“I totally understand.” He smiled at her, softly, encouragingly. “It’s not really a crush, despite what Chloe thinks. I do think you’re cute, but I just want to be your friend. If that’s okay? You seem like a really nice person. Especially if what Master Fu said about you is true.” Another lie, but he felt justified in this case.
Her blush returned, with a horrified look to match. But she quickly covered it with a stutter. “No! I—sure! Yes! That’s great! Friends! You can’t have enough friends! Heh?” She bared her teeth in an attempted smile, as Alya whispered, “smooth...”
“Um,” she tried again, “I actually have a favor...”
“Shoot!”
“My dad threw his back out yesterday, and we’re supposed to get a shipment of flour later tonight. Nino and Alya are coming, but would you be willing to help with some heavy lifting?”
Emile grinned, “of course! What time?”
“Just after school. I don’t know how long it’ll take.”
“That’s fine! My schedule is wide open!” And he loved every minute of it.
—
At lunch, the group met at the bakery, which was becoming a tradition. Even if they brought their own food, they still went to Marinette’s to eat. It was convenient, and the Dupain-Cheng household was just too cozy to pass up.
Emile sat at the kitchen table, a cup of tea in his hands, in complete bliss. It was an amazing feeling to be invited out by friends, and not having to deny them.
He almost began to purr.
As Alya was just at the apex of her ‘why Hawkmoth is on Hiatus’ theory, the door opened and Tom came in.
“Hi kids,” he smiled, hiding a wince. The back brace did not go unnoticed by the group.
“You holding in there okay, papa?”
“Your old man is as tough as nails. But once I get some ibuprofen and sit for a bit, I’ll be right as rain.” He fished the pills out of the medicine cabinet. “You kids wouldn’t be willing to help me out later today would you?”
“Marinette already reached out, and we’ll all be there to help!” Alya said, flexing her arm.
Tom laughed in relief. “Thank goodness! I couldn’t imagine my wife and Marinette doing it all by themselves.”
“How long will you be in the brace?” Emile asked.
“Oh the doctor said I have to wear this thing for three weeks, but I have to avoid heavy lifting for six to eight weeks. It’s gonna make things more difficult around here for sure.”
“What if I were to help?” Emile asked, sitting up and smiling.
Marinette’s eyes widened. “Oh, Emile, you don’t have to…”
“Of course I don’t have to, but I want to. You’ve been so nice to invite me along and give me food, it’s the least I could do!” And, he’d get to get in with the in-laws.
“Well,” Tom began. “I really could use the extra help right now. A strong young man! I’ll talk to my wife and see what she thinks. We wouldn’t be able to pay you much.”
“Oh no, you don’t need to pay me...unless it’s with cookies.”
Tom laughed, “alright, then I’ll talk with Sabine and see what she thinks.” And he left.
“Don’t think I don’t see what you’re doing.” Alya noted with a smirk.
“Uh, what am I doing?”
“You’re trying to get in with Marinette’s parents!” Oh, she was good.
Emile scoffed, but blushed at the look Marinette was giving him. “You were there this morning. It’s not a crush. It’s just…what friends do, right? I just want to do the right thing.”
Marinette reached over and touched his hand. “Well, you’d really be helping us out. I do appreciate the offer.”
Adrien blushed. Nearly all of his interactions with her as Adrien had been…awkward. To say the least. It wasn’t long before he ‘died’ that she was finally able to talk to him with full sentences. As Ladybug, she flirted with him, and teased him, and acted like a brave older sister. But this look on her face, it was totally new. Full of adoration and gratitude, with just a touch of helplessness. He returned the touch by holding her hand. “It’s not a problem at all. Like I said, I owe you.”
The group finished their meal, and Alya finished her theory on Hawkmoth, before it was time to return to school.
The rest of the day, Marinette kept staring at the back of Emile’s head. Maybe it was Alya’s conspiracy theorist tendencies rubbing off on her. But Marinette could have sworn there was something familiar about him. The blonde hair was strikingly similar to Adrien’s as she had the sunshine gold burned into her retinas after staring at him for two years. But his mannerisms were almost more like Chat Noir. A little dramatic and grandiose. Not quite as much, and not so annoying. And the puns, Emile liked puns and portmanteaus. But thankfully he kept them at a normal amount.
Perhaps she was only seeing what she wanted to see. Emile was sitting in Adrien’s seat, and was taking up the role of second boy in their little quartet. Heavens forbid he actually take Adrien’s place! No, no one could ever do that!
But he just seemed...familiar. Even his voice rang a bell.
He turned around in his seat and gave her a little smirk and a wink, and for half a second, she swore she was looking at Chat Noir.
But the scar convinced her otherwise. Chat had some scarring there too, but not as dramatic.
“Uh, Marinette? You okay? Or are you just stunned by my beauty?”
“Oh, no no. Sorry, I was lost in thought. What did you say?”
“I asked if you wanted to work with me on the worksheet? Nino ditched me for Alya.”
“Oh! Sure we can work together!”
Emile beamed. “Just don’t get lost in my eyes, My Lady.”
Marinette was going to retort, but found her voice dry. It couldn’t be. It just couldn’t be...
After school, the group returned to the bakery, only to be enthusiastically greeted by Tom and Sabine.
“There’s our hard workers! Ready to haul ass?”
“Thomas! Language!” Sabine chortled as she elbowed her husband. “There will be snacks waiting for you after the work is done!”
Since the Dupain-Cheng’s had the extra help, they took advantage of them by not only unloading the delivery of sugar, chocolate, flour and other ingredients, but also doing some heavy cleaning in the bakery. This included moving entire displays out of the way to mop under them. All the windows and glass casings were washed and all the metal was polished.
Three hours later, everything was in its place and the bakery sparkled.
“Wow! It looks great!” Marinette chirped with pride. “Thanks for all your help guys!”
“No problem,” Nino grinned. “Now about those snacks…”
They all hustled upstairs and gathered in the kitchen. Laughter took place, as it resided with the Dupain-Cheng’s. It was a close friend with Alya and Nino, and an old friend of Adrien’s. What he wouldn’t give to have this everyday of his life.
“Emile?” Sabine asked, after a lull in conversation.
“Oh, yes?”
“Tom said you offered to help us during his recovery period.”
“That’s right,” he rambled. “I don’t have very much baking experience, but I’m available whenever I’m not in school. I can even get up early in the morning.”
The parents grinned at each other, before Sabine continued. “Well, I wouldn’t feel right about taking you on if we couldn’t pay you.”
“Oh no, that’s fine! I don’t need any money…but I’m like a cat, if you feed me, I’ll keep coming back!”
“Well, I was going to say…” Sabine continued her knowing grin. “We have a spare room, if you’d like to stay with us. We’ll pay you in room and board.”
Adrien’s eyes widened. He couldn’t possibly be that lucky, could he? Maybe it was because he was with Ladybug at the moment, maybe her luck was rubbing off on him. Or maybe it was her lucky charm in his back pocket.
“So, how about it, roomie?” Marinette nudged his arm.
“Yes! 100% yes! I was even—living with Master Fu is nice and all, but I have to share a room at his place. I was trying to save up some money for an apartment—“ He ran a hand through his hair, partly in shock, but mostly in joy. “I don’t know what to say! Thank you!”
“There are two conditions.” Sabine interrupted, her voice deadly serious.
“Yes, of course.” Adrien sobered.
“Number one, you have to keep up with your homework. School comes first. And number two…you have to join us for dinner and movie nights.”
Adrien’s eyes widened as he looked at the smiling family. “I…” he choked.
“What, is that going to be a problem?” Tom nudged him.
“No, not a problem at all.” And everyone, including Adrien, was wholly unprepared for the tears that rolled down his cheeks.
“Emile?” Marinette asked, a careful hand on his shoulder.
“I’m sorry…I just…this is all I ever wanted. To…be a part of a family.” He wiped his cheek. “Thank you. Thank you so much.”
--
Later that night, Emile returned to the bakery with all his earthly possessions in tow. A big duffel bag, which held all his clothes, a backpack, and a smaller duffel for the fragments of his old life.
“Welp, here I am! Emile Fu, bakery gremlin.” He grinned.
Marinette had been the one to greet him at the door. “Bakery gremlin, huh?”
He hunched over slightly and spoke in a voice akin to Igor. “At your service, my lady.”
She laughed heartily, a wonderful song to his ears. “Come on, I’ll show you to your room.”
It was across the stairway from the bakery. A small room, about the size of a college dorm. There was a little closet, a bed, and a table with a little lamp and two chairs. The walls were painted a soft blue, and there was a window with an alley view, just big enough for Chat Noir to fit through.
“It’s not much, but you can have it all to yourself.” She grinned. “The door locks, and the bathroom is directly above you.”
“Thanks Marinette, this is awesome.”
“No, thank you. My parents were actually really stressed about trying to figure out what to do. My dad can still bake, but there’s a lot of heavy lifting prep work, and deliveries. You’re their hero.”
Adrien smiled at that. A hero in more ways than one. “I wondered. If it’s just your family running the place, then I assumed there would be trouble without your dad being able to lift. I’m really glad I could help.”
“Then, I’ll let you get settled in. Mom and dad are working on dinner. Do you like quiche?”
“Love it,” he beamed.
Though she said she would leave him be, she found a question on the tip of her tongue, and so she leaned against the doorframe and watched him unpack. He took his, frankly atrocious, clothes out of his duffel bag and laid them on the bed.
“Are you going to keep watching me? Or are you going to help?” He teased.
“O-oh, yeah, I can—“
“I’m just kidding Marinette, you don’t have to help. There’s not much to put away.”
She blushed and knotted her fingers together.
“But you do look like you have something to say.”
Might as well get it over with. She thought. She glanced behind her, checking to see that the coast was clear. “Um…you—do you know who I am?”
He continued folding his clothes, not even looking at her. “Do I know that you’re Ladybug? Yes. I thought that was fairly obvious.”
Marinette turned slightly and rested her forehead on the doorframe with a groan.
“But don’t worry, I know it’s a secret.”
“Why do you know?”
It was time for another lie. “Well, Master Fu is 180-something, but he’s not immortal.”
Now that he thought about it, that was a problem. He might need to ask the old man about doing some extra training.
“Do you know who Chat Noir is?”
“Of course,” he answered easily. “Probably the coolest person on earth.”
She barked a laugh, “now you’re just messing with me.”
“I am not! That guy is too hot to trot! He’s purr-fection.”
“Ugh, and you sound just like him.” She rolled her eyes. “So,” she continued, nervously. “I have to ask. Who are you trying to be friends with?”
He smiled softly at her, and then fished out the necklace from around his neck. “These flat parts are called facets.”
“Right.”
“And each facet is cut very specifically to reflect light. And looking at each facet differently changes the appearance of the gem. Ladybug is one of your facets, and so is Marinette. I want to be friends with the whole gem.”
He hadn’t realized how close they had gotten until he looked up from the diamond. Her big blue eyes were glistening, just like the jewel. A light dusting of pink sat upon her nose, as she stared up at him.
God, she was beautiful. And she had been there all along. Just a little bit further and…
She stepped back, tucking some hair behind her ear. “Thanks…that means a lot.”
He managed a smile in return, though his stomach was twisting. “Of course.”
“I’ll let you know when dinner is ready.” And she all but shut the door in his face.
He sighed. One day, and hopefully soon, he’d tell her the truth, and they’d finally be together.
Plagg floated up to his face, a sneer on his face. “You rotten thief.”

A meaningful Father’s Day..
We all want to receive and give gifts that connect us more deeply with each other especially days like Father’s Day. Sometimes the standard Father’s Day gifts of ties and wallets, gift cards and power tools, sports accessories, and grilling gear just don’t do it because the individual just isn’t into them, has very specific tastes, are no longer with us or simply has everything they need? Of course, there is always the “cool factor” of buying a gift on WIRED magazine’s gift list.
What if your Father’s Day gift could come from a different place? What if your gift gave back to a cause that reflected the values your Father imparted to you? What if your gift made an impact for good? You’ll celebrate someone you love while also making a difference.
Does your Father have a passion for global or local concerns? Is he interested in the outdoors? Does he have a passion for gardening, cooking, sports? What does your Father do in his leisure time? Where does he go on vacation? Does your Father volunteer at a local nonprofit? Does your Father love animals or have a pet?
Susan’s Father passed away almost 20 years ago. He was born on a ranch “in the willows” outside of Susanville, near Honey Lake (pictured in the photo on the right). Some of her earliest memories are of summers at her Aunt Gloria’s cabin near Antelope Lake (pictured in the photo on the left) where her family would float a DIY raft as a platform out on the lake to dive into the water and swim. He raised rabbits for the St. Francis, drove truck, served in the Navy, taught her Mother how to make gravy, loved ranching and playing poker with family in the old “cook house”. Her parents lived in the Fruit Growers Appartments early on in their marriage. The Lasson Land Trust has information about the fruit boxes that were built there. For Susan, giving the the Lasson Land Trust is a way of honoring his memory.
Susanville’s vision is to build a service to help individuals like yourself find the perfect cause to celebrate the person they love. Until we have it build, here are a few ideas to help you pick a great Father’s Day gift with impact.
For the globally minded...
If he loves to cook, perhaps gifting an Emergency Cookstove gift to provide propane-powered cookstoves to families fighting malnutrition in poor countries around the world. In addition to giving people a way to feed their families, the stoves allow them to boil water so that it’s safe to drink.
If he loves animals, perhaps buying a goat for a father and his family in India?
If your Father is keen on business, consider supporting a budding entrepreneurs by making a donation to the Adventure Project. This organization helps create jobs in low-income communities and works with local organizations to do so. The goal is, by creating new jobs the organization can help eliminate poverty, increase incomes and decrease conflict. That means more dads (and moms) can support their children
For the locally minded...
If you want to make a difference closer to home, choosing a project from Alternative Gifts is a good place to start. Alternative Gift International runs a food pantry and homeless shelter program across the U.S. and Canada (meaning your gift might help someone right around the corner from you).
For the baseball fan!
If your dad is an avid baseball fan, it is not too late to consider joining the The Home Run Challenge by the MLB and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. It is put on every year for a week in June (this year, the 1st through the 16th) where you can pledge a certain amount of money for each home run hit by your dad’s favorite team during that week raising funds to go to the foundation dedicated to finding a cure for prostate cancer, a disease that kills 1 in 39 men, the second leading cause of cancer death for men in America. And you’ll give Dad the best gift of all: spending quality time watching the game together, reminiscing about his favorite pastime.
Thanks to the generosity of MLB, everyone that participates in this year’s Home Run Challenge will be entered in a sweepstakes for a chance to win two free trips to this year’s MLB All-Star Week July 7 – 9 in Cleveland, OH, including airfare, hotel accommodations, and tickets to events throughout the entire weekend including Play Ball Park, the Home Run Derby, the Celebrity Softball Game, and the All-Star Game!
And as a runner-up prize, someone will win a signed Johnny Bench jersey!

Kodachrome
When it comes to road-trip movies, the “getting there” part of the journey is generally more important than the “you have reached your final destination” ending. “Kodachrome,” alas, too often travels a well-worn and predictable highway, one that was traversed to near-perfection not too long ago by Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska.” That 2013 Oscar-winner had Bruce Dern’s alcoholic patriarch riding shotgun next to Will Forte as his estranged son. They shared in a boondoggle of a car excursion from Montana to the Midwest to collect pop’s supposed winnings from a sweepstakes scam. Their stops along the way filled in the blanks of their past with the assistance of relatives and friends of varying degrees of eccentricity.
Director Mark Raso’s “Kodachrome” doesn’t stray much from this predecessor, save for the more upscale, urban and artsy status of its central characters: A wayward, world-famous photographer dad, Ben (Ed Harris), and his distant music-exec adult child, Matt (Jason Sudeikis), who is on the verge of being fired from his label. That his father is in the last stages of liver cancer and has only months to live make the mission they embark upon all the more fraught. At issue are four mystery canisters of Kodachrome film that Ben, as analog as they come, has just discovered and he wants to get them developed in order to put on one final exhibit of his work. But the only photo lab that still processes Kodachrome is located in Parsons, Kansas—and it is just days away from closing up shop.
Joining them on their ride is Zooey, Ben’s loyal nurse and assistant, who initiates the reunion and assumes the role of put-upon go-between for the two reluctant companions (also convincing Matt to join them is Dennis Haysbert as Ben’s manager, who dangles the bait of a meeting in Chicago with a hot band he wants to sign). That Zooey is played by Elisabeth Olsen, as fierce as she is fetching, pretty much preordains her to eventually become entangled with lovelorn Matt sooner or later once he lets go of his hostility. This trio of more-than-capable actors is the heart of the story—especially Harris, who knows from difficult cut-off artist types after "Pollock" and eschews cheap sentiment—but it takes a while for them to untangle their character’s conflicts and bounce off one another. Not helping matters is the film’s soundtrack that is filled with lulling ballads that seem to be plucked from a collection that might be labelled “Emo Music for Long Drives in a Vintage Convertible.”
And, in case you are wondering, the Paul Simon song “Kodachrome” does not make the cut, although it does get namedropped early on.
Part of the problem is that Jonathan Tropper’s screenplay has a competing secondary motive as it mourns what has become lost in the digital age. A 2010 article in the New York Times about the cult of Kodachrome and how hordes of fans descended upon the lab was the impetus for him to create his story, which is why Ben rails against nothing being physically present anymore while being turned into “data” and “electronic dust.” Matt, sensing the irony of his statement, punches back: “What is the point of having an artifact if you never see it with your own eyes.” He adds for extra measure, “You just never saw me. Not once.” Such over-reaching to milk a metaphor does not do “Kodachrome” any favors.
With each pit stop, however, Zooey and Matt begin to warm to each other a little more. The ice finally breaks once they pay a surprise visit to the suburban home of Ben’s younger brother, Dean (that’s Bruce Greenwood behind that massive gray mustache), who raised Matt after his mother died when he was 13. They find common ground over his boyhood vinyl collection (question: why are the bedrooms of grown children in films always preserved as shrines? Doesn’t anyone turn them into an office or a guest room?) He enquires about her youthful tastes and her choice of The Smiths and The Pixies passes muster. But Ben—a self-proclaimed “miserable asshole”—is a harder nut to crack, especially after Dean’s wife (Wendy Crewson) is forced to reveal a long-held and hurtful family secret.
It’s when they reach Chicago that the emotional compass begins to right itself as Ben offers Matt some sage paternal advice and Matt puts his own best interests aside to stand up for his father. Unlike “Nebraska,” “Kodachrome” saves its bonanza of male bonding for its last half-hour or so before reaching a waterworks-worthy climax that draws out the best in both male leads.
One last observation: For a movie bent on extolling the virtues of outdated innovations that are on the verge of extinction, it is rather amusing that streaming service Netflix is distributing “Kodachrome” while its end credits proudly proclaim that it was shot on 35mm Kodak film. Maybe the past and present can live in harmony occasionally.

100 and counting
In her 100 years of living, nothing has slowed down Alma Gilleo.
She carved out a career in publishing at a time when few women worked in the field.
She traveled widely.
And she cared deeply, often ministering to others.
So when it came time to celebrate her 100th birthday, her family and caregivers couldn’t let a pandemic spoil the fun.
Alma celebrated her big day in the fresh air and sunshine outside Spectrum Health Rehab and Nursing Center.
Sitting in her wheelchair, Alma smiled up at the gathering of friends and family members. Although well-wishers kept a social distance because of COVID-19 concerns, they surrounded her with a colorful assortment of pinwheels, signs and balloons.
“She has always been amazing,” said her niece, Sandra DeVries. “She has always been super intelligent. She has accomplished a lot in life and she always has been such a giving person.”
Asked her secret to a long life, Alma had no tips to share.
“I’m surprised as anyone that I made it this far,” she said.
Longevity might run in the family. Her mother lived to the age of 102.
Even as she turns 100, Alma does not focus on the past. She is too busy planning for the future.
Still an avid reader, she has two books in progress: “Becoming” by Michelle Obama and “Shiloh Autumn” by Bodie and Brock Thoene.
She recently took up painting, through an expressive arts class at the Rehab and Nursing Center.
“She’s always trying to get things perfect,” said Maria Chase, recreation therapy coordinator. “She is a little hard on herself, but she’s always wanting to learn. She is a forever student.”
She enters the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes regularly and is sure she will win a prize some day.
After receiving a book for Christmas about Bonsai trees, she looks forward to growing one.
“She just does not think about dying,” Sandra said. “She still makes plans for the future. She is always saying, ‘I will do this project, and I will do that project.’”
100 years of change
Sandra brought to the party a display showing photos of Alma through the years, including pictures taken on a trip to Spain and Morocco in 1970.
And she talked about her aunt’s remarkable history.
Alma was born on June 10, 1920—at the beginning of the roaring ’20s. That’s the year Warren G. Harding was elected president, Prohibition began, and women won the right to vote in the U.S.
Although named Verda Louise Gilleo, her family and friends have always called her Alma. She grew up on the east side of Michigan, the oldest of six children.
As an adult, she moved to Chicago and worked in publishing as an editor and writer of educational materials. She also authored several books.
She remained single, but stayed close to her younger siblings, nieces and nephews, often sending them cards and letters.
Alma dedicated much of her time in church activities serving others. She took part in a prison ministry, in which she led devotional studies through the mail with inmates.
When Alma’s mother became older, she moved in with Alma.
“She took care of her mother for 25 years or more,” Sandra said. “She never complained once about that. She counted that as a joy. She loved her mom so much.”
About five years ago, Alma moved to the Rehab and Nursing Center in Grand Rapids—close to Sandra and her family.
She quickly endeared herself to her caregivers.
“The staff loves her,” Chase said. “She has made some good friends.”
Alma signed up as a resident volunteer and began to visit and read to other residents.
“She still has a heart for wanting to do some good in the world,” Sandra said.
A visit with her sister
After Alma’s outdoor party wrapped up, the celebration continued indoors.
As Alma emerged from the elevator on her floor, she saw the hall lined with residents and staff members, cheering, clapping and singing happy birthday.
Later that afternoon, her care team had one more celebration in store.
Chase arranged for Alma to see her 93-year-old sister, Helen Chandler, in a virtual visit.
Helen, who is Sandra’s mother and Alma’s only surviving sibling, lives in an assisted living center and couldn’t attend the birthday party. But the two enjoyed an hourlong online visit with each other.
Alma beamed throughout the festivities.
And the celebration warmed the hearts of Alma’s care team, as well.
“This is pretty special for us,” Chase said. “We are excited we can do all of this for her birthday. It feels really good.”

New City: a short history of Glanmire
Glanmire is one of many new communities to join the new and expanding Cork City this summer. Here we explore the history of Glanmire and some of the historic buildings in the area. For more information on the history of Cork City visit our local history website www.corkpastandpresent.ie
Writing in 1837 in his Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, Samuel Lewis described the village of Glanmire as being located to the east of Cork City on the road to Dublin, with the village situated in a picturesque wooded valley on either side of the Glanmire River. The area was notable for the range of flour mills, along with various paper and flax mills employing many in the vicinity. Overlooking this abundance of industry were the large residences of affluent Cork merchants and many of these big houses remain in the area to the present day.
Dunkathel (Dunkettle) House Dunkathel House was designed in the Palladian style by Abraham Hargrave of Cork and built circa 1780 by the wealthy merchant Abraham Morris who was later elected Member of Parliament for County Cork. Dunkathel House is situated at the mouth of the Glanmire River and overlooks the Lee estuary. The house was sold in the 1870s to Thomas Wise Gubbins who ran Wises’s Distillery on the North Mall and he lived there until his death in 1904. The house was passed on to the eldest son Joseph who in turn left it to his mother, five sisters and two brothers. One of the sisters Kathleen ran the farm producing top quality butter and used one of the rooms in the house as a dark room for developing photos. The youngest sister Beatrice became a recognised artist with one of her paintings displayed in the Crawford Art Gallery. She did much of her painting and sketching on the grounds of Dunkathel and remained there until her death in 1944.
Since there were no heirs in the Gubbins family the property was inherited by a nephew, Geoffrey Norris Russell. He and his family lived there until they sold it in 2003 to Michael O’Flynn of O’Flynn Construction. Michael O’Flynn refurbished the property and applied for planning to develop the grounds into a residential and leisure complex that has proven controversial with local residents and is still ongoing.
Riverstown House Riverstown house was built in the early 1700s and enlarged in the 1730s by Dr. Jemmett Browne, then Dean of Ross and later Bishop of Cork. The interior is notable for the decorative plasterwork by the renowned stuccodores, the Francini Brothers. In fact, Dr. C.P. Curran, a historian of 18th century Dublin architecture, sculpture and plasterwork, had casts made of the plasterwork in Riverstown House which were used as copies for the decorative works in Áras an Uachtaráin.
The house was occupied by the descendants of Browne up until the 1950s and was then left vacant. It was feared the elaborate plasterwork would deteriorate. However, the property was purchased by John Dooley in 1965. With the help of the Irish Georgian Society, the house and its rooms were carefully restored and had been open to the public until recent years.
Lota House Lota House is another example of Palladian architecture overlooking the Lee estuary. It was designed by the Franco-Italian architect Daviso de Arcourt (David Ducart), who also designed the Cork Mayoralty House in Grenville Place which is now part of the Mercy Hospital. The property was built in 1765 by Robert Rogers on a site that had been occupied by the Galweys, a merchant family, since circa 1400. The property changed hands during the 19th century.
From 1837 it was occupied by William Hastings Greene who in turn sold Lota to the Wood family in 1854 who remained there until selling to Patrick Crowley owner of the Long Valley pub in 1922. The Brothers of Charity acquired the property in a somewhat dilapidated condition in 1938 for £3,000 and it remains in their ownership to the present day.
Lotabeg This Georgian house was built circa 1800 for Sir Richard Kellet, 1st Baronet. It was designed by Abraham Hargrave who also designed Dunkathel House.
It was later occupied by the MP Daniel Callaghan who commissioned George Richard Pain to design the notable Ionic arch, known locally as ‘Callaghan’s Gate’. Perched atop the arch sits a stone figure of a dog known as ‘the black dog’ that was reputed to have saved Callaghan from drowning in the nearby Lee. Lotabeg changed hands from the Mahony family in the 19th century to the Donovan family and the house is currently on the market.
Lotamore A 2-storey late Georgian house built in 1798, Lotamore had several owners. Most notably, the Perrier family who were a merchant family of Hugenot origin and several members of this family became Mayor of Cork during the 1800s. The house underwent different incarnations over the years, from serving as the offices of the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes in the mid 1900s to a 20-room guesthouse. Changing with the times, since 2017 Lotamore has become a modern and state-of-art fertility clinic.
Lota Lodge (Vienna Woods Hotel) Dating back to circa 1765, Lota Lodge is thought to have been designed again by Davis Duckart in the Regency style for Lord Barrymore as a hunting lodge. A century later it was owned in 1875 by the Sharman Crawford family. There was an extensive fire in the premises in 1902 and it was rebuilt the following year. The property was acquired by the Brothers of Charity after the Crawford’s left in 1946 and used as a seminary from the early 1950s until the mid 1960s. In 1964 Joan Shubuek converted the property into a hotel renaming it ‘Vienna Woods’ having lived in Austria for some years and feeling that there were some similarities between the area and Vienna. The Fitzgerald family and Michael Magner purchased the hotel in 2006 renaming it ‘The Vienna Woods Country House Hotel’. It continues to be a leading hotel in Cork today.

#Justin #Guarini #Biography #Photos #Wallpapers #extreme #fun #green #happiness #instafashion #language #musically #pretty #sexy #stylish
Justin Guarini was born in Columbus, Georgia, on October 28, 1978.
Dad Eldrin Bell is a former Atlanta police chief, now Clayton County (Ga.) Commission Chair. Chief Bell is first cousins with acclaimed actor Samuel L. Jackson’s wife, LaTonya.
Stepfather Jerry Guarini is a retired Navy physicist.
Mom Kathy is a former TV journalist and anchor at CNN and is now a freelance broadcast journalist and Realtor in Doylestown. Then president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, called in – from Airforce One–his best wishes to Kathy Guarini, whom he knew from her CNN association, upon hearing the news of Justin’s birth. (Justin’s godparents are Prince Faisal and his former wife, Princess Azia of Saudi Arabia.)
Raised in central Bucks County, Pennsylvania, by mom Kathy Pepino Guarini and step dad Jerry Guarini, Justin was born in Columbus, Georgia, where his mom was an anchor for the local ‘Action 9 News’ on WTVM. Kathy also anchored news techniques in Philadelphia and Atlanta (CNN), where she met Justin’s father, Eldrin Bell, who rose through the ranks of the Atlanta police department to become its commissioner.
Justin was accepted into the Atlanta Boys Choir at four years old. The Choir generally does not accept children under six years of age.
With a mother in the television industry, and a father always in the public spotlight, Justin’s drive to entertain came in a natural way. His sister says that he imitated Michael Jackson’s flavor and was known to ‘moonwalk’ around the house. His first concert was The Jacksons’ “Victory Tour.” Justin met his idol, Stevie Wonder, at Quincy Jones’ birthday party held at Spago slumberaurant in LA on March 15, 2003.
Justin has a large family– he has nineteen brothers and sisters! It was reported in the Atlanta Journal Constitution that Eldrin has 13 children – eight of whom are adopted. Jerry reportedly has eight children, including Justin.
At Lenape Middle School, Justin impressed Bucks County Music Festival director Donald Dumpson – a professor at Westminster Choir College and composer who has worked with notables like Patti LaBelle and Boyz II Men – so thoroughly that he canceled the rest of the auditions. Justin’s solo at the festival, “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” won him a standing ovation.
Justin attended University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and School for Film & Television, New York City (1999-2000). One of his classmates was Scott Holroyd, formerly Paul Ryan on “As the World Turns.” A high school acquaintance was pop singer Pink.
In 1996, Justin served to form an a Capella group with school friends. “The Midnight Voices” was founded “to serenade their ‘female friends’ the night before high school graduation,” but the group went on to burn a CD and take second at the 2000 Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Midnight Voices CD can be purchased. Profits are donated to a music scholarship fund at Central Bucks East High School.
Justin directed amateur theater groups, including the Riverside Haunted Woods (where he first began growing the famous curls) pre-AI days and had the lead role in a lot of musicals during high school and college (Pirates of Penzance, Phantom of the Opera, Edwin Drood, etc.). Immediately prior to American Idol, Justin was offered a seat in the prestigious master class program in “The Lion King” on Broadway; he auditioned for American Idol alternatively and couldn’t take the offer from Lion King when he became an AI finalist. Justin was nationally voted runner-up on the debut season (2002) of “American Idol – The Search for a Superstar”, in which there had been earlier mentioned 10,000 to audition. Post AI, he was given a standing offer to play the Emcee in “Cabaret” on Broadway (instead, he was essential by management to do CD/movie promotion).
Justin has since appeared and/or performed on numerous TV programs and other live venues and events and has had extensive media coverage on entertainment news programs, news segments, and in magazine and newspaper articles.
Justin has completed a jazz album, Stranger Things Have Happened, which he developed, along with Greg Gordon Smith.
