Helsingin Sanomat wrote about the debacle of incumbent MEP Teuvo Hakkarainen (Finns) announcing his bid for reelection — without his party's support.
In a press release on Monday, Hakkarainen announced his intentions to run again in June's European elections, even though the Finns Party secretary, Harri Vuorenpää, said he would be excluded from the party's candidate list.
Vuorenpää said that Hakkarainen was aware of the party's decision.
HS called Hakkarainen on his way to a plenary session in Strasbourg, who said he was caught by surprise and unaware that the party would not nominate him.
Hakkarainen did, however, confirm that he received a phone call from the party a few days prior, but that was apparently not enough for him to concede.
"I didn't know, because I can't make decisions like that based on a phone call. I get so many calls [...]," the Finns Party politician said.
He told HS that the party government makes the decisions and he needs written confirmation, a phone call would not suffice.
Hakkarainen has been no stranger to controversy during his political career, having been convicted of assault and sexual harassment as a member of Finnish Parliament.
In the press release, Hakkarainen said that he had been "much asked and even urged to stand for election".
"As the people on the ground are waiting for my answer, I made the decision to participate in the elections last weekend," Hakkarainen said in the release.
HS asked Hakkarainen his opinion on the fact that the party seemed to push him out.
"That's what I'm wondering. But I am a sitting MEP and we have at least had a practice in the party of democratically electing candidates and then the people have said, 'no more bickering'," Hakkarainen responded to HS.
Wolf Pack comeback
Tabloid Iltalehti summarised Finland's comeback win against Denmark in the EuroBasket 2025 qualifiers.
Finland's national basketball team, the Wolf Pack, lost against the EuroBasket 2023's runner-up Serbia on Friday by a score of 77-61.
Early in the game, it looked like Denmark was poised to upset the Wolf Pack at home in Espoo. In worldwide FIBA rankings, Finland comes in at the 20th spot, while Denmark ranks 58th.
In the first two quarters, the Wolf Pack played as if they were sleeping, according to IL. Denmark led by as many as 16 points at halftime, but lost their lead after a rallying third quarter performance by Finland.
In the third quarter, Finland outscored Denmark by a margin of 30-14.
The final score was 89-85, with the Wolf Pack coming out on top, led by 23-year-old Mikael Jantunen with 19 points. The Finns were without NBA star Lauri Markkanen during this round of the contest.
Finland has already qualified for an automatic bid to Eurobasket 2025 since the country will be co-hosting the tournament along with Cyprus, Latvia and Poland.
Finnish goods' export destinations
Business daily Kauppalehti covered Finland's most popular export countries in 2023, with the US surpassing Sweden to become Finland's largest export destination.
Finland's main exports to the United States were machinery, equipment and transport gear. As an example, Finland's single most valuable export was the Icon of the Seas cruise liner, worth 1.9 billion euros. It was exported towards the end of the year.
While the value of goods exports to the US grew by two percent last year, exports to neighbouring Sweden fell by nearly 14 percent according to Statistics Finland data. A year prior, the value of goods exported to the US jumped by 75 percent.
"Surely this is a sign of an economy oriented to the West. Trade with Russia has been lost so far, and the draw of trade with China has slowed. The US economy has done better than Europe, so there are natural reasons for this," Pasi Kuoppamäki, chief economist at Danske Bank, told KL.
"It seems logical to export to places where there is growth and sufficient demand. Joining Nato has given Finland more visibility. Let's hope that it will help to make our export efforts pay off," said Petteri Rautaporras, chief economist of the Technology Union.
Although exports to the US grew, the majority of both goods and services exports, roughly two-thirds, still sent to European countries.
Additionally, Finland's forest products exports saw a rough year, falling by an estimated 18 percent. Weak economic development in Germany, Sweden and China played into this drop.

All the judges agreed that a mentor switch would be best for everyone, considering the outbreak from the boy on your original team. As Harley had asked, you were able to switch over to his team and help them with their design.
It was quite good, a few minor tweaks and suggestions that they took to heart helped immensely. The original design itself was brilliant, and while the rest of the members of the team explained the concept and execution, you saw Harley stay quiet. You knew it was his design, and he probably did most of the handiwork, but he let the team take charge. He didn’t overpower them, even though he was likely the strongest member of the team.
The night before judging, the team had you look over it once more, and you wouldn’t have changed anything. They asked thoughtful questions and seemed happy with your answers. It was such a different energy than the first team, you were actually able to talk to them and listen, and they listened to you and respected you.
Harley was walking you out back to your hotel on the outskirts of campus. It wasn’t that far, and you knew the area, but you enjoyed the company.
“Have you thought about applying for the Stark Internship Program?” You asked him.
“Of course, we’re all applying.” He nodded.
“That’s great, I think you’d be a perfect candidate. You’re a good team player, but I can tell that the design was mainly your idea. You seem to have experience beyond your years.” You said.
“You’re one to talk.” Harley smirked, causing you to laugh, and also dodging your question.
“I know, I know, but seriously.” You smiled, hoping he’d explain.
“When I was younger a... friend gave me some pointers and set me up with a lab.” He chose his words carefully.
“That’s some friend.” You raised a brow, but kept your tone playful.
“He was a character for sure. He once gave me this tiny rocket, called it a piñata for a cricket.” He smiled at the memory, but you’d recognize that sarcastic turn of phrase anywhere.
“You didn’t happen to grow up in Rose Hill, Tennessee did you?” You asked suspiciously.
“Sure did.” He answered casually.
“So you’re the wonder boy.” You smirked, knowing exactly who he was.
“He mentioned me?” He raised a brow, and stopped for a moment.
“Years ago. Something about a... potato launcher?” You tried to remember, and laughed at the thought of the man standing in front of you pointing a potato gun at your father.
“Wow.” He laughed, confirming your guess.
“You know, we’ll be announcing the first cut for the program next week and interview signups. Why don’t you come up to New York? I’m sure he’d love to see you again, now that you’re all grown up.” You motioned to his tall frame.
“I’ve never been to New York before.” He shrugged.
“You’re kidding, I’ll have to show you around.” You smiled, you realized you’d reached your hotel, and thanked Harley for walking you.
The next morning was the final day of the competition, and the day all the judges submitted their scores. Naturally, you weren’t allowed to score the team you mentored, to be fair. As you were scoring your first team's work, you saw the boy who disrespected you giving you a dirty look, like he thought you’d score them low for his outburst, to get back at them. You’d actually given them one of the higher scores, as they’d improved upon every error you saw and mentioned.
At the end of the afternoon it was announced that Harley’s team had won, and you were proud. Really they didn’t need much help, but you still felt happy for them, they deserved it.
That evening Harley joined you on the jet back upstate. You wanted to surprise your father, and you could give him a tour of the compound. He’d be a great addition to the team, and he was already familiar with your father. Of course formally, you’d make him go through all the steps for the internship, but he practically had a guaranteed spot.
As you got off the jet, still in your business attire from the competition, F.R.I.D.A.Y. informed you that your father was in the lab.
Harley followed you, trying to keep up as he admired everything you’d passed in the compound on the way to the lab. Through the window you saw your father with his back facing you, tinkering with the prototype you left him for Rhodey’s leg braces. You slipped into the room quietly.
“Dad, I’ve got a little surprise for you.” You announced yourself.
“I’m not ready to be a grandfather, young lady.” He quipped, causing you to roll your eyes as he turned around. Harley stepped to your side and your father raised a brow. He clearly recognized him, but couldn’t place him.
“How do I know you?” Tony asks, squinting his eyes as he examines him.
“We’re connected?” Harley shrugs with a smile, clearly that must have been some sort of inside joke since Tony immediately lit up, remembering him, and hugging him.
They were catching up as you were moving around the lab, showing him the nanotechnology he was so interested in.
You were laughing at something Harley had said, placing your hand on his arm gently as you heard the door to the lab open.
The three of you whipped around.
“Peter?” You asked, confused.
“Sorry, Happy told me to come pick up... my work.” He covered, clearly not wanting to mention the suit in front of a stranger. You hadn’t seen him since that morning he left your apartment, you weren’t prepared to see him today.
And he wasn’t prepared to see you so close with another man as he came into the lab. He looked older, and you were both dressed up, but he didn’t know from what. Peter had needed an update on the suit, and taking your advice had gone through Happy. A pang of jealousy rushed through him, he remembered your words, you needed time, to see if it’s worth the risk. Maybe you’d decided it wasn’t.
“Here ya go kid, all ready to go.” Tony handed him the case, he clearly wasn’t going to tell you that Peter was dropping by or that he’d mended his suit.
“Are you one of the interns?” Harley asked, oblivious to any of the tension in the room.
“Uh, yeah, yeah, Peter.” He shook Harley’s hand with a closed lip smile.
“Harley.” He smiled back.
“Nice to meet you, I’m sure you guys are busy, I’ll get out of your way. Thanks Mr. Stark.” Peter nodded, lifting the case slightly as he turned to exit the lab.
Tony had noticed how your face had dropped into a sad smile for a moment, and as Harley quickly turned back to you, you put your smile back on like a mask. Tony realized that you weren’t over Peter, and after all this time, you might never be.
After showing Harley around the compound with dad, the two of you drove into the city for dinner. You had a few tricks up your sleeve. You knew where you could go to ensure that the paparazzi saw you, with someone that wasn’t Thomas. Maybe the opportunity you needed to naturally distance yourself from him without causing suspicion was to bring someone else into the mix.
And the papers the next day proved your plan could work. “Trouble in Paradise? Stark Spotted Uptown with Strapping New Beau”. Your plan was coming along splendidly, but you knew there were more factors coming into play now. Since you were working with the FBI, they’d told you to sit tight with Thomas until they could find a safe out for you, and that’s exactly what you had provided them with. Once you received confirmation from them that this was a good opportunity to act and distance yourself, you set up another one of your planned outings with Thomas.
You’d gotten what you wanted out of him, he’s no longer of use to you. You knew he had been ‘cheating’ on you anyway. You had the pictures to prove it, him in a club with another girl, and in a dark restaurant, and outside his house. You were just waiting for the right time to use them. After Harley had to go back to MIT for classes, you’d set up a lunch with Thomas. Although he didn’t know that the paparazzi had already been tipped off to your location and anonymously sent the pictures.
You’d reserved a table outside to give them the perfect opportunity to overhear what was about to go down. You began by asking Thomas about the other girl, and he only laughed.
“I can’t do this anymore.” You spoke loudly so the undercover paparazzi two tables over could hear you and quote you, running your fingers through your hair and dipping your head to look as if maybe you were crying, knowing they’d snap a shot.
“It’s over Thomas.” You stood, slapping some cash on the table and walking off.
“Wait-” he tried to grab your arm, no doubt resulting in another great shot for the tabloids. While he knew the relationship was fake, he knew that you leaving would interfere with his father’s plan, you were a crucial factor.
“This was a mistake.” You shook your head, and pulled your arm from his hand.
As you exited the restaurant, Thomas was furious, his father was going to kill him, the election was in three days. A tank in the polls this close could ruin everything!

“You had one job! One stupid girl! And you couldn’t even do that!” The mayor yelled at his son. Slapping the newspapers onto the table before him. Various headlines exposing his escapades and tell-alls by the young models he’d been courting. He and Stark were finished, and it had ruined everything his father had been planning. The one on top mocked how the mayor had lost reelection by only a thousand votes.
“I’m sorry!” Thomas tried to defend himself.
“You’re useless, you’re never going to make it in this business. Do you know what they’ll do to us now that I’m no longer mayor?” His father scolded him. He worried that without his government connection the other mafia Families would no longer find him useful, and they’d push them out.
“I do know something...” Thomas spoke quietly, unsure if he should share. This caused his father to stop for a moment and raise a brow, but his phone rang, shifting his attention.
“What?” He answered the phone, rudely.
“Deals off.” Thomas recognized the voice of Toomes on the other side.
“What?” His father asked once more, this time his tone was pure anger.
“You can’t even hold the mayor’s seat, you’re not holding up your side of the bargain. We needed you as a segway to the other Families, and to protect what we’re doing here from the law. You don’t have that power now, you’re no longer of use to us. Deals off.” Toomes ended the call, your father threw the phone down with a crack as it shattered. His eyes traveled back to his son, hoping he had something good, a saving grace.
“Go on.” His tone changed.
“I- I think there might have been some truth to those Spider-Man rumors. I wasn’t over that night. And after they came out she was very quick to rekindle for appearances sake.” Thomas explained his theory.
“That could work... that could be our bargaining chip to Toomes. We give him Stark, he cuts us back in. He just lost the support of the Families, he’ll be desperate. The fucking Spider has already fucked with his business once. Stark was already a liability with his plans, and if Spider-Man catches wind of what they’re planning he’ll try to stop it,” He smiled sinisterly, rubbing his hands together in thought.
“Two birds one stone.” The mayor smiled, dark thoughts swirling through his mind.
“What are you going to do to her?” Thomas asked hesitantly, yes he was mad at you, but that didn’t mean he wanted you to get hurt.
“What has to be done.” His father smirked, and Thomas didn’t like what that could mean.

By Jean Marie Carey
It is possible that Mark Antony met the young Cleopatra when he served under the Roman general Gabinius in 55 BCE, but it is their formal meeting, following the death of Julius Caesar and the events thereafter that is well known, inspiring paintings, poetry, plays, engravings, and scores of television series and movies. But the Roman statesman and general, born on 14 January 83 BCE, was much more than the Ptolemaic Egyptian queen’s ill-besotted lover. An officer of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony fought and was finally defeated by Caesar's heir Octavian — the future emperor Augustus — in the civil war that ended the Roman Republic.
Antony’s friend and mentor Caesar helped Antony win election in 50 as tribune; the rights that this magistrate enjoyed, including the veto, allowed Antony to champion Caesar's cause as the threat from Pompey the Great and Pompey's new conservative friends grew. But with his veto ignored and purporting to be endangered, Antony fled with a colleague to Caesar in January 49 BCE. Caesar used their treatment as a pretext to invade Italy and start a civil war. Antony took part in fighting and was left in charge of Italy during Caesar's campaign in Spain. After holding command of Caesar's left wing at the battle of Pharsalus, Antony resumed his control of Italy in late 48 BCE.
After Caesar's assassination in March 44 BCE, Antony seized control of the late dictator's personal funds and papers and organized a funeral that incited Caesar's veterans and the people of Rome. The assassins, though officially pardoned, were forced to flee Rome, while Antony gained part of Caesar's army and a five-year command over the Gallic provinces. A rival finally emerged only in Octavian, who rallied the support of Caesar's friends, officers, and veterans.
While Octavian returned to Italy to settle veterans, Antony went east to raise funds and make arrangements with local authorities. After a meeting with Cleopatra in 41 BCE, Antony wintered with her in Alexandria, and the Egyptian queen subsequently gave birth to twin children.
Following periods of negotiations and battles with Octavian, Antony was defeated conclusively in the naval Battle of Actium. Though Antony and Cleopatra escaped by sea from Actium in western Greece, they lost most of their forces. Antony's remaining supporters, including Herod, defected, and Antony committed suicide when Octavian entered Alexandria in August 30 BCE.
Antony benefits from a nuanced biography by Plutarch, who recognized Antony's military achievements. But the fine portrait of the simpleminded soldier, tragically brought down by love, belongs to literature, not history. The real Antony's miscalculations lay elsewhere. Ruthless himself, Antony failed to recognize soon enough the even greater ruthlessness of Octavian.

Cheap Car Insurance Guaranteed ~ Tricks Only a Traveler Knows
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE
There is all kind of scams & spam surrounding cheap car insurance.  Ads that claim they have a secret no insurance company wants anyone to know about.  Then there’s the agent promising you the lowest rates guaranteed, but then sends you through a gauntlet of irrelevant car or driving related questions.  Cheap car insurance is not a gimmick or a trick.  Its an equation, and all you have to do is insert the right variables.  Something I found out first hand when traveling to California.  Want to skip the story and get to the details on how to get cheap car insurance?
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE
No one wants to pay for car insurance, and everyone wants cheap car insurance.  When I first turned sixteen I remember calling insurance companies legal thieves, and con artists.  I remember trying to get a quote once from an agent in a strip mall setting who thought it was reasonable for a 16 year old to pay $650 plus a month.  Because of that I never had car insurance continuously.  I was covered sporadically over the years.  Prompted mainly by police, court houses or banks.  To find cheap car insurance by midnight the day of whatever infraction I was trying to get out of.  It was like a little game that only I knew about.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE DAY OF
When a police officer pulls you over its almost always for some victimless revenue generating traffic violation that nobody dead or alive really cares about.  Unfortunately it took a run in with an officer in Minnesota for me to figure out how to keep their greedy little hands off of my money.  I was pulled over for having a necklace hanging from my rear view mirror.  Serious stuff I know, but they have to justify their employment somehow I suppose.
Instead of giving me a warning or education this overzealous power tripping officer elected to give me a ticket for no proof of insurance.  He could have given me a ticket for operator obstruction & inattentive driving for the necklace hanging.  Both of those are petty misdemeanors with minimal fines, and carry no jail time possibilities.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE DAY OF
No proof of insurance on the other hand is an enhanceable misdemeanor offense that looms a hefty fine, possible jail time, possible license suspension and NOT cheap car insurance rates.  Enhanceable in the courts means if you get enough of the same charge in a certain amount of time they upgrade the charge from misdameanor to felony.  Which is how most felony DWI charges occur.
When I called the number on the back of the ticket I found out they wanted $730 for not having a piece of paper in my car.  On the hunt for cheap car insurance I called multiple companies looking for the lowest rate.  After hours on the phone I reluctantly accepted a $300 a month policy.  All this was before the internet, and while filling out all the paperwork by hand I wondered if getting cheap car insurance the day of the infraction would even satisfy the courts.
So I used the date a month earlier on everything I signed hoping they would just use the date I provided, and if they asked me about I would just play dumb.  They didn’t catch it, and printed me off a cheap car insurance ID card backdated a month.  I drove immediately to the police station.  Showed an officer my cards & gave my lame reasoning why it wasn’t on me, and the ticket was voided.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE POSSESSION
A few months later I was pulled over again for a cracked windshield.  Again serious stuff right.  I had never made any of my cheap car insurance payments because well they weren’t cheap.  When the officer asked for my insurance I gave him the ID cards I got a few months back, and this time instead of giving me a ticket he let me go on my way.
This was before cell phones and the internet, but he never even checked. A light bulb clicked.  Computers or their software were nowhere near what they are today.  In fact I ended up using liquid paper and a type writer to make insurance ID cards.  For years I handed out fake insurance ID cards to police officers avoiding that $730 ticket.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE IN MODERN TIMES
Then came cell phones.  Then the internet, and a young cop decided to validate my ID card.  Obviously it failed.  I was in California at the time, and had no idea I was about to uncover the ultimate cheap car insurance tactic.  I had two address one car looking for quotes for same day cheap car insurance.  What I uncovered was that if I used my Minnesota address my rate was drastically higher then my CA address.  When I added Bachelors degree my rate lowered.  Then I wanted to see how low I could get it.
So I lied and said I had a car alarm & various other safety features my rate lowered.  When I said I was married my rate lowered.  I went to another nationwide car insurance website and fabricated every answer to their  questions.  Every answer I provided was to make me look like the safest most responsible driver applicant with minimal use.  I got a quote for like $78 a month for full coverage.  BOOM ~ Yes please!!  Now thats cheap car insurance.  Take my money & email me my ID cards.  Went to the courthouse got the ticket cancelled.  Problem solved, but Alaska was about to unveil the real trick behind cheap car insurance.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE ALASKA
After I moved up to Alaska my car loan lender wanted a copy of my insurance or they would provide one for me at a cost that I wasn’t found of.  So back to the internet.  Only this time I had 3 addresses to use: Alaska, California & Minnesota.  I tested each address with accurate information before I would go back and fabricate information to get a better deal.
MN & CA I already had a good idea what they were going to be, but Alaska surprised me.  For starters not all companies provide car insurance to Alaska.  They don’t have the permit or the license or who knows they just don’t.  The few that do at that time required you to call in.  I’m a phone ninja when it comes to call centers and getting what I want so I was game.  Whoever picked up that phone was either over trained, over informed or over naive.  He divulged all sorts of information that I shouldn’t have been able to access.
I hate the questions agents ask you.  Are you married?  Did you go to college?  What color is your hair?  Blah blah blah Nothing driving related or vehicle related, but required to get a quote.  Why?  Because your answers become variables in an equation that some super computer predicts your driving risks, responsibility, safety, habits & maturity.  That’s probably common knowledge to most people, but it wasn’t to me.  The real eye opener was when he told me about the zipcode factor.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE ZIPCODE
Apparently insurance companies keep a database of population, reports, claims, accidents, thefts & natural disaster for every zipcode.  If your zipcode has a bunch of auto thefts you car insurance is higher.  A bunch of claims in your zipcode?  Then your auto insurance quote is higher.  Natural disasters common in your zipcode? Then your insurance will be higher then a zipcode that doesn’t.  If you live in a big city the percentage of an accident is higher so your insurance is higher.
He told me all of this before answering any of the questions because I didn’t want to answer any of the questions.  After lying to him on every question he gave me a quote for $18 a month for full coverage insurance?  Mainly because the zipcode I was using was for a 17 mile wide island that had a population of less then 1,000 people.  There wasn’t even a police station.  No natural disasters.  There wasn’t even a bank.  I cracked the code to cheap car insurance, and kept that policy for almost 2 years.  Even after I sold the car on that policy I continued to pay on it so that I had valid ID cards.  After not having any reason to have car insurance, but to avoid a ticket from a police I finally let it lapse and expire.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE
Cheap car insurance is an equation.  It doesn’t rely on your driver history.  It doesn’t correlate to your income or your credit score.  Cheap car insurance is based on what others in your area have done.  Granted I give a fake drivers license number, and fake social security number when requesting cheap car insurance quotes, but my quote is based solely on my zipcode.  If I give a zipcode for Phoenix were there is a new multi car pile up every day my insurance is going to be higher then if I give a zipcode for an island that has 20 cars.
Cheap car insurance is not based on anything you have done.  Its based on other people actions, history, habits & predictions.  If you want cheap car insurance find a zipcode that has no population, crime or any other factor that will raise your rates.  You don’t have to live there.  Make up an address I do it all the time.  You don’t care about the 200 page legal mumbo jumbo policy do you?  All you care about is the ID cards they will email you, and you can print them off.  And if you ever have to make a claim you just tell them you were on a road trip.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE
Insurance companies are legal thieves & complete con artists.  Had I paid my insurance premiums for the last 23 years I would have paid over $40,000 for something I never used.  I made two claims, and they were this last summer.  One was for a suicidal deer who was across the street, and decided to go back to the other side.  The other was when my windshield cracked sitting idle in my driveway.  I could paid for both out of pocket, but the DMV now requires proof of insurance when renewing licenses. So I coincidentally had insurance to cover these two incidents.  Does that amount to the $40,000 I would have paid over the last 23 years? Absolutely not?  Will it make me carry cheap car insurance from here on out?  Doubtful.
CHEAP CAR INSURANCE TRAVELER
Traveling unveils all kinds of unique situations like this to a person.  Every area has its own persona, vibe, pulse, regional characteristics & traditions that can only be discovered through traveling.  The education alone that I have gained from traveling is unmeasurable.  You can’t find things like this in books or classrooms.  Nowadays there’s probably a blog out there, but can you find it.  Without travel I wouldn’t have found out that if one state has a restriction on my license all it takes a letter with an out of state address to remove it.  I wouldn’t have found cheap car insurance.  Travel has given me a PHD in the DMV.  Travel is this unique little teacher that is always looking to improve your knowledge and change your vantage point.

The best and worst of everything from March Madness Day 3
For those of you complaining that the 2017 NCAA tournament had yet to produce a major upset, day three gave you that and much, much more.
Sometimes, non-stop college basketball action featuring the best teams in the country for two days straight isn’t enough to please people. Sometimes people want everything stated above along with results that surprise them and dramatic finishes that make them jump out of their seats.
The first two days of the 2017 NCAA tournament may not have provided that, but Saturday’s slate of second round action certainly did. The third day of the big dance gave us our first No. 1 seed going down, our first double-digit seed advancing to week two, and our biggest officiating controversy to date.
As is the case with any day in the big dance, there was a lot of good, a lot of bad, and a little bit of weird. Let’s take a look at it all.
THE BEST DAY THREE GAME
(8) Wisconsin Badgers 65, (1) Villanova Wildcats 62 (East)
There will be a new national champion in college basketball this year, because the reigning king of the sport and the 2017 tournament’s No. 1 overall seed is no more. Villanova was sent home before the Sweet 16 for the seventh time in eight years thanks to a tremendous effort from a Wisconsin team that wanted to remind the country that no team has won more March Madness games since 2014 than the Badgers.
A back and forth affair resulted in the contest being tied at 62 in the final seconds. With the game on the line, Wisconsin’s most experienced player, Nigel Hayes, made a tremendous move to score what would prove to be the game-winning basket.
Vitto Brown then scored a clean strip of Villanova’s Josh Hart on the other end to seal the victory and send the Badgers to the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight season. There is no other team in the country that can make that claim.
THE TEAM THAT WON IT BEST
West Virginia
On paper, Notre Dame seemed like the worst possible second round matchup for West Virginia. The Mountaineers win games by using their trademark pressure to feed off of opponents’ mistakes. The Fighting Irish don’t make many mistakes. They entered Saturday’s game ranking second in the nation in fewest turnovers per game, and were leading the nation in both assist-to-turnover ratio and team free-throw percentage.
Somehow, the Mountaineers still forced a team with that makeup to play right into their hands. West Virginia forced Notre Dame into 14 turnovers (six above their season average), and held them 10-for-28 shooting from beyond the arc, and to 40.7 percent overall from the field as a team.
Because of plays like that, the Mountaineers are moving on to San Jose to face Gonzaga in the Sweet 16.
THE TEAM THAT WAS THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Florida State
Sure, Villanova was the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed and got beat in the second round, but at least they were competitive. Florida State was playing a team seeded eight lines below (more than the differential between ‘Nova and Wisconsin) and was blown out from basically the opening tip to the final horn, which occurred with the scoreboard showing 91-66. The American public didn’t seem to have a whole lot of faith in Leonard Hamilton’s team heading into the tournament, and on Saturday the Seminoles proved all their detractors correct.
THE ALL-DAY THREE TEAM
Nigel Hayes, Wisconsin
The senior hasn’t had the All-American season that some were predicting four months ago, but he was at his best when his team needed him the most. Hayes grabbed eight rebounds and scored 19 points, including what proved to be the game-winning basket with 11 seconds to play.
Nigel Williams-Goss, Gonzaga
The All-Day Three Team loves Nigels. Williams-Goss didn’t have his best shooting day of the year, but he scored a team-high 20 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists in Gonzaga’s 79-73 win over Northwestern.
Bonzie Colson, Notre Dame
The Bonz almost single-handedly kept Notre Dame within striking distance of West Virginia, scoring 27 points and drilling 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc. Unfortunately he was the only Fighting Irish starter who shot better than 50 percent from the field.
Jevon Carter, West Virginia
Every time Notre Dame started to mount a rally, Carter was right there to drill a back-breaking three-pointer at the end of the shot clock. The junior guard finished with a team-high 24 points and connected on four of his five attempts from deep.
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier
The Musketeer star continued his monster March by dropping 29 points in Xavier’s demolition of Florida State.
THREE DAY THREE JEERS
1. The missed goaltending call on Gonzaga
After trailing by as many as 22 points, Northwestern had whittled Gonzaga’s lead all the way down to five with just under five minutes to play. The Wildcats had the ball and all the momentum in the world and an apparent uncontested lay-up to cut the lead to three. Instead, Derek Pardon’s dunk attempt was blocked by Gonzaga’s Zach Collins, who had appeared to come up through the rim for an obvious goaltend. No goaltending was called.
Yeah, that’s supposed to be two points.
Chris Collins ran onto the court and went ballistic, prompting a technical foul call and stopping Northwestern’s momentum dead in its tracts. The Wildcats fought during the game’s final minutes, but could never get any closer than they were before the missed call.
Collins’ reaction after the game when he was told that a missed call had in fact taken place was pretty priceless.
There’s no guarantee that the final outcome would have been different if the proper call had been made, but there’s also no doubt that the sequence completely changed the direction that the game was heading.
2. Defending national champions continuing to disappoint
As the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, Villanova had appeared to be in prime position to become college basketball’s first back-to-back national champion in a decade. Instead, the Wildcats became the latest victim of a troubling trend. Not only were the 2006-07 Florida Gators the only defending national champion since 1992 to retain their crown, but they’re the only defending national champions in the last 16 years to even make it back to the Elite 8.
Heavy is the head.
3. Verne Lundquist getting hit in the face with a basketball
When 99 percent of the world gets unexpectedly drilled in the face with a basketball, it’s hilarious. When Uncle Verne does, it’s an act of terrorism.
I don’t care if it was intentional or not, the guilty party must be brought to justice.
Thankfully, Verne is a pro’s pro who played through the pain and even made light of the incident during the West Virginia-Notre Dame broadcast.
THREE DAY THREE CHEERS
1. Upsets!
Look, I would have settled for something as simple as a top two seed being pushed to the brink. Kudos to the tournament for going above and beyond and giving us the No. 1 overall seed bounced in a thriller and a No. 3 seed getting run off the court by a No. 11. Even the way West Virginia-Notre Dame was a bit of a surprise.
You’re keeping us on our toes now. We appreciate that.
2. Dancing usher
Not, like, Usher Usher ... this usher
So better.
Seriously, shoutout to this guy for being the only thing remotely entertaining about Xavier-Florida State for non-Musketeer fans.
3. Vitto Brown’s singing voice
You may have known that Vitto Brown helped Wisconsin knock off Villanova with his 10 points and his defense on Josh Hart in the final seconds. But did you know he had pipes like this?
Vitto Brown of @BadgerMBB gives one smooth rendition of "One Shining Moment" http://pic.twitter.com/RvimOEBTJj
— March Madness TV (@MarchMadnessTV) March 18, 2017
The next time CBS elects to switch up “One Shining Moment” (side note: please don’t do this), I would be fine with Vitto Brown being the one who goes into the booth.
THE BEST DAY THREE DUNK
Vic Law’s put-back dunk came at the height of Northwestern’s run against Gonzaga.
THE BEST DAY THREE PICTURE
A terrific shot here of the no-call that changed it all.
Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports
THE BEST DAY THREE QUOTE
“They play on ESPN every game, so I’ve just seen them play a few times. But it’s nothing special, nothing we can’t do. We’re not scared to say any team on this planet earth so we’re ready and we’ll be ready to play tomorrow.”
—Wichita State’s Darral Willis Jr. discussing his team’s second round game against Kentucky on Sunday
