OPINION: The Life and Times of an Indian Otaku
Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You marked a historic first in my anime watching career. Contrary to popular belief, being the first anime to be released in Indian theaters is not the historic first in question (that honor goes to Shinchan: Bungle in the Jungle). Rather, Weathering With You would become the first film I'd ever watch on opening day — "first day first show" as we Indians call it. In the mad scramble to get tickets, I'd emerged a winner. Was it worth the struggle?
An emphatic yes. It was so good I went on to rewatch it twice.
To fans in India: I’m so happy to tell that ‘Weathering With You’ (Tenki no ko) will release in India this October! We have licensed the Indian distribution rights to PVR Pictures and BookMyShow backed company Vkaao.
— 新海誠 (@shinkaimakoto) August 10, 2019
The Indian theatrical release of Weathering With You in 2019 marked an important moment in the history of the Indian anime fandom. The story of how Shinkai noticed (and fulfilled) an online petition by Indian fans asking for its release here is already the stuff of legend. Because access to anime (especially in theaters) was so scarce in India, even in 2019, fans sought to have the film legally released in theaters. And thanks to Shinkai, it worked. To Indian anime fans, this represented the moment Japan — and the rest of the world — recognized our existence in the fandom. But Indian otakus didn't spring up overnight. Anime has had nearly three decades of history here. It just looks a little different than the rest of the world. The origins of anime in India go back to the '90s. Prior to the economic reforms of 1991, we had one — yes, only one — TV channel, the state-owned Doordarshan. The post-1991 wave of private TV channels brought with it a flood of international TV shows, among them anime like Robotech (which aired on the newly-created Star Plus). Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, the anime adaptation of the Indian mythological epic of the same name, was released in 1992 and had a long and troubled production history, but the end product was a grand success, with its all-star Hindi cast and catchy songs turning it into a TV fixture for well over a decade. It even received a US release, with Bryan Cranston voicing the lead role. The remainder of the '90s would see various anime achieve varying degrees of success, from Nippon Animation's 1989 adaptation of The Jungle Book — which became a nationwide hit — airing in India starting in 1993, to late-night anime like You're Under Arrest and Gunsmith Cats. Despite this, there wasn't yet an actual fandom surrounding anime at the time. That would all change upon the turn of the century.
Cartoon Network revolutionized the Indian anime market when the channel arrived in 2001. The launch of dedicated anime programming block Toonami brought with it two anime that would permanently shape the future of the fandom: Dragon Ball Z and Cardcaptor Sakura (albeit in its heavily-edited Cardcaptors form). While I never watched Dragon Ball Z (compared to all my friends at school), I did watch some Cardcaptors with my sister, which would actually be the very first anime I watched. My own viewing habits notwithstanding, DBZ was very much the anime of the moment. Schoolkids would frequently shout out famous lines from the iconic English dub. We'd even invented various hand games based on attacks and moves from DBZ. In 2003, another monumental shift would come as the childhood classic Pokémon hit the small screen, followed closely by Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Beyblade. The merchandise associated with these franchises turned them into smash hits with a younger audience. All the cool kids had Pokemon cards and Beyblade tops. Battling with them at school was the stuff childhood was made of. To this day, these toys continue to sell well. Beyblade tournaments are still very much a thing. While many of my schoolmates were avid fans of DBZ, there were other trends in anime that could be observed, trends that had to do with language. From my experience, certain anime were only available dubbed in Hindi — a language spoken largely by the northern half of the country. Coming from a south Indian city with a significant north Indian population, I could observe a clear trend wherein Hindi-speaking north Indians grew up with these Hindi-dubbed anime, while people in the south (who spoke other languages) largely grew up with titles that were available in English (or Tamil, as fans of DBZ's Tamil dub can testify). Interestingly, these Hindi dubbed anime tended to be ones that were popular in Japan but not so much in the West — stuff like Doraemon, Shin-Chan, KochiKame, and Case Closed. This gave the north Indian anime scene a rather unique flavor. An even more interesting case is that of India's northeastern region (comprised of states like Nagaland, Manipur, and Meghalaya). Being culturally different from the rest of India, these states have had a history of consuming Korean and Japanese media, and they embraced anime and manga in a way the rest of the nation had not. Anime-related cosplay is huge in the northeast, with some of the best cosplay conventions in the nation taking place there and becoming a part of the local fashion scene. The general acceptance of otaku culture in the region continues to be high.
Eventually, anime would become a little more accessible to all. The launch of dedicated channel Animax in 2004 represented another watershed moment in the fandom. The shows Animax brought over were unlike anything we'd seen in the medium. Shows like Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Inuyasha, and K-On! redefined what anime meant for Indian audiences who had previously seen anime as a childhood interest and no different from other cartoons. As the channel slowly began to shift its focus to the older teen/young adult demographic, more mature anime like Cowboy Bebop, Hell Girl, Akira, and Welcome to the NHK challenged our conservative notions of what was acceptable to air on TV, especially considering these shows aired in daytime slots rather than late-night. This honeymoon period did not last. Animax was delisted by service providers in 2012. The years to come would be some of the most frustrating for us anime fans, as availability was at its most inconsistent and uncertain. While the channel attempted to make a comeback later on in 2016, it eventually disappeared for good in 2017. Despite all these problems, I look back on Animax fondly. Thanks to it, we became aware of the existence of the entity known as "anime." We began to actively seek out anime over other forms of animation. In short, it resulted in the formation of an actual fandom centered around anime. Anime fan clubs began to pop up in major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Kolkata. Widespread conventions outside of the northeast region came next. Anime Con India was started in 2010, followed closely by Delhi Comic-Con in 2011. Anime conventions in India are a curious thing. They are very unlike the sprawling, sophisticated conventions of the West. The funds simply aren't there for that sort of thing. I don't recall a single Indian anime convention that was attended by a voice actor, animator, or the like. So what are Indian cons about? In an interview with The Citizen, Anime Con India founder Nitesh Rohit talked about his reason for starting the con: "like any other belief and faith they all needed a temple to congregate (at)." This statement really resonates with me, and sums up what Indian cons are about. What they lack in scale and facilities, they make up for in intimacy and a feeling of togetherness. They are more or less small-scale events for anime fans to find other fans, to network with them, and basically feel less alone. Because feeling alone was part of the original Indian otaku experience. The early fandom was largely an urban phenomenon, as going to cons wasn't an option for everyone and the internet wasn't what it is today. So, you had these disconnected pockets of fans. People around you were unlikely to share your interest in anime and may have even judged you for it. The general consensus in India was (and still is) that animation is a medium for children. And remember, for a long time, anime accessibility varied by region. So, if you were lucky enough to find a kindred otaku, there was no guarantee they were into (or had even heard of) the same titles as you. This meant that we hadn't really had the ability to develop any sort of unique culture or traditions of our own. Things like going to cons, renting anime DVDs, memes and in-jokes — these things didn't exist for the vast majority of early fans who were school-going kids or college students of little means. A culture of our own wouldn't arise until much later — when that generation grew up.
Of course, it wasn't just us who grew up — technology did, too. The internet became more ubiquitous. Social media and forums enabled us to network with each other regardless of location, in ways we'd never have imagined. To the scattered fandom of the early days, this has been nothing short of a blessing. The other big change ushered in by the internet was the era of streaming. Until then, most of our anime viewing took place on television and as previously stated, was not always very consistent. Accessibility improved greatly with the launch of Netflix in 2016. In today's India, Netflix is a household name, with a significant portion of young adults having access to a subscription. With a catalog of over 200 anime, Netflix has been responsible for pulling in many new fans. Plenty of people "come for the movies, stay for the anime." Series like My Hero Academia, Death Note, and One-Punch Man have become mainstream successes in this fashion, with a significant following even among non-anime fans. Another streaming service that is beginning to make inroads into the Indian market is Crunchyroll, with simulcasts like Boruto and originals like Tower of God, and the fact that it is free makes it accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Most Indian anime fans I know of have heard of Crunchyroll, and as more titles get licensed it is inevitable that its popularity will rise. And us otakus are doing plenty to help it do just that.
The success of Weathering With You is a shining example of the tight-knit nature of the Indian anime fandom. All it took was one person (an anime fan named Divishth Pancholi) to create a Change.org petition asking for its release in Indian theaters. The petition went viral, getting over 50,000 signatures and attracting the attention of Shinkai and the producers, resulting in its release here. Today, that event is seen as a smaller part of a greater Indian anime movement that is pushing for increased availability and acceptance of anime in India. Hashtags like #IndiaWantsAnime frequently make their presence felt on social media. This fandom isn't without its problems — it isn't the most inclusive when it comes to non-male fans, the "animation is for kids" specter hasn't been fully shaken off, and I'd love for anime BluRays/DVDs to be more widely available here. But I am grateful for the fandom's existence for getting me into anime in the first place. Without them, I'd have never been sitting in a movie theater on October 11, 2019, watching Weathering With You.

Tuitions in Vrindavan: When a Russian Indologist taught George Harrison Hindi (20 Sep. 2019)
by Ajay Kamalakaran
When she agreed to teach the legendary English singer Hindi in the 1970s, India scholar Natalya Sazanova had no idea who the Beatles were. Over four months of lessons, George Harrison preferred to keep his fame a secret
On an otherwise uneventful day in Vrindavan in 1974, Natalya Sazanova, a Russian Indologist with a deep interest in Hinduism, was introduced to a “charming young” Englishman by sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. Decades later, Sazanova, who was one of the best-known professors at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, would tell Russian newspaper Novie Izvestiya in an interview that the young man, who had a ponytail and was wearing a “checkered American jacket and Indian sarong” listened closely as Ravi Shankar and Sazanova spoke in Hindi.
The Russian was so proficient in Hindi that she had defended a thesis on the work of Hindi playwright Bharatendu Harischandra for her candidature of philological sciences degree (equivalent to a masters in philosophy) in 1962.
“George,” who did not understand what the conversation was about, asked the Russian Indologist to teach him Hindi.
“He had an absolute talent,” Sazanova said. While most of her students took about six years to master conversational Hindi, the Beatle managed to learn well in just four months of “irregular” classes. “George grasped the spoken language on the fly. He particularly learnt bhajans fast and sang them.”
Sazanova was also mesmerised with how George mastered the sitar so quickly. “I was so impressed that I asked him, ‘George, what do you do for a living.’ He was terribly embarrassed [by that time, he was world famous]. He said, ‘Actually, I’m a professional musician.’” She added that Ravi Shankar smiled when he heard this.
The teacher, completely ignorant of her student’s fame, asked him to keep a small concert, to which he agreed. “One of the concerts that George and Shankar arranged for several friends, including me, was on a moonlit night in a deserted spot on the banks of the Yamuna River,” Sazanova said. “It was simply amazing. The three of them played—Ravi Shankar, George and an Indian flautist—and I hadn’t heard anything like it before.”
Unfortunately, there were no recordings of the concerts. “Tape recorders were still rare at that time,” Sazanova said. “Today, I am very sorry that at that time I did not have any device. The only thing left are photo slides.”
Spiritual Path
At that time, Sazonova and Harrison were both pursuing their interest in Hinduism. The Russian’s spiritual guru Sripad Maharaj also had an influence on the Beatle. Harrison’s song It is He (Jai Shri Krishna) was based on a bhajan taught to him by Sripad Maharaj.
Sazanova recalled how spirituality and Hinduism always came up during their lessons. “We could not get around philosophy in conversations with him, but I was engaged in Hare Krishna bhakti,” she said. “As much as I could, I explained to George the connection of music with bhakti. I explained that since everything in the world was connected, words and music could not exist separately.”
Harrison, who was well versed with the Bhagavad Gita, chanted the Hare Krishna mantra, and regularly communicated with Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness or ISKCON, as it’s popularly called. “More than once I attended their meetings and I can say that George always listened very carefully to what the guru told him.”
Harrison never spoke of his fame or international stature during those four months. Once their lessons were over, he wrote a small note in Sazanova’s diary. “I was extremely happy to meet you. You made a tremendous impression on me. God Bless You.”
International Music Sensation
Sazanova did not make too much about her lessons in Vrindavan and thought of them as nothing but one of many pleasant experiences in the country that she had dedicated her life to understanding.
Back in Moscow, she shared her photographs from her time in Vrindavan and then came the excitement. “Oh My God! This is Harrison,” a student screamed. The students then went on explain who the English musician learning Hindi was. They were impressed out of their wits when they heard that George Harrison actually dedicated a song to their teacher at one of his small private concerts by the Yamuna.
It’s a myth that the Beatles were officially banned in the Soviet Union. While anything associated with Western culture was looked upon with great suspicion, there was no Brezhnev-era government call for citizens to not listen to the British band. One of the major reasons that the music of the Beatles wasn’t easily available in the USSR in the mid-1960s was the hostility and envy of Soviet composers. Russian composer Nikita Bogoslovsky once referred to the band as the “dung beetles”.
However, John Lennon’s statement that the band was more popular than Jesus Christ was welcomed by the ideological newspaper Pravda. By the time Sazanova was back in Moscow from Vrindavan, her students would have most likely listened to a poor quality record that was sold by a company called Melodiya. The album cover didn’t have the name of the band but chose to call them a “Vocal Instrumental Ensemble.” Muscovites could also hear the Beatles music on Radio Luxembourg.
The message in Sazanova’s diary and her photographs became the talk of the university in 1975. On hearing that her student in India was a legend in the world of music, she started listening to the Beatles and Harrison’s individual songs. She also listened regularly to her student’s songs that were dedicated to Krishna.
Harrison did not forget his Hindi teacher after he went back to the West. He sent Sazanova a book about Krishna, where he had written the preface. The preface ends with words familiar to each and every fan of the Beatles: ‘Give peace a chance. All you need is love.’
An Illustrious Career in Indology
Sazanova continued her scholarship of Hindi and Sanskrit literature for the next three decades. In 1984, she obtained a PhD by defending a thesis on ‘The Creativity of Surdas and the North Indian Literary Tradition of the 16th to 19th centuries.’
She also cultivated a close friendship with Russian-Indian artist Svetoslav Roerich and his wife, actress Devika Rani. She was on the board of the Moscow Nicholas Roerich Society from its founding in 1980 till her death in 2006.
Sazanova remained a lifelong devotee of Krishna. She was grateful to Harrison for the role he played in popularising Hinduism in the West. In her interview to Novie Izvestiya, she said movements such as “Krishnaism” gave non-Indians the opportunity to access ancient spiritual systems. “Doesn’t George’s sincerity reflect in the (spiritual) songs he composed,” she asked.
In Sazanova’s Footsteps
Once the Soviet Union collapsed in 1992, there were no restrictions of any kind on cultural and musical imports. Along with the growth of popularity of their music, rumours resurfaced of the Beatles actually performing in secret in the Kremlin in the 1960s. Some fans still erroneously believe that the song Back to the USSR was inspired either by this “secret performance” or after another (falsely) rumoured visit of the Fabulous Four to Moscow on account of an emergency landing.
When the story of a Moscow State University professor teaching George Harrison Hindi once again began to do the rounds in the Russian capital in 2005, journalist Ekaterina Maksimova, then 18, decided to check if it was a hoax. “It was very difficult to believe the whole story, so my friend and I decided to try and get in touch with Dr Sazanova,” Maksimova says. “We went to the Moscow State University to find her. She was still a part of the faculty of the Institute of Asian and African Studies.”
On hearing that the girls wanted to know more about the Indologist’s experiences with George Harrison, she invited them home. The excited students went to Sazanova’s home on Russian Orthodox Christmas (January 7th) morning in 2006 and saw some photos and the diary. “Some sceptics have raised questions over the authenticity of the autograph, but I have no doubts,” Maksimova says. “George Harrison had a very unique signature; he used to write his name in a very characteristic manner.”
Over cake and tea, Maksimova and three friends spoke to Sazanova in detail about her interactions with Harrison. “We just sat there, pouring in the questions, still in disbelief that George Harrison’s teacher was sitting in front of us,” she says. “It was unreal. It doesn’t happen… We were so excited that it turned into an interrogation about George.”
Even after three decades, the Russian Indologist was in awe of the music legend’s humility, sincerity and manners. “I remember her telling us several times during the conversation that George was polite and modest,” Maksimova says. “She also told us that he took the lessons very seriously and spent a lot of time praying and reading and citing religious texts.”
Sazanova also spoke of her guru Sripad Maharaj, her passion for Hindi literature, Sanskrit and Hinduism, inspiring Maksimova to enroll at the Moscow State University’s Institute of Asian and African Studies. She studied Hindi, Sanskrit and Urdu and specialised in Chhayavad-era literature, but unfortunately could not study under Sazanova.
Although Sazanova was still a member of the faculty of the Moscow State University, she was too weak to travel daily to the campus in 2006. A handful of students would go for lessons to her apartment, which was in southwestern Moscow.
“When I called her home in June 2006, her son told me that she had passed away,” Maksimova says. “It was a terrible shock for me. I had always loved India, but I found out about the Institute of Asian and African studies only because of her… But more than that, the very idea of being a student of the same teacher who taught George Harrison, was thrilling. It would almost feel like being his classmate.”
Maksimova, who now works for a leading private television channel in Moscow, is a regular visitor to India and has often contemplated organising Beatles tours to Rishikesh and Vrindavan for Russians.
The transcripts of George Harrison’s interviews about Indian culture and Hinduism have been widely translated into Russian. Ardent fans of the music legend in the country take great pride in his Russian connection and the fact the he was in a way a bridge between Russia and India.

DAY 4019
SitRfchyd Mar 15, 2019 Fri 9:36 pm
Birthday - EF - Kalpana Kakade .. Saturday, March 16 .. greetings for the birthday and wishes for happiness ever ..
मज़हब नहीं सिखाता , आपस में बैर रखना .. mazahab nahin sikhaata aapas mein bair rakhna .. Religion does not teach us to bear animosity among ourselves
"Sare Jahan se Accha" (Urdu:سارے جہاں سے اچھا; Sāre Jahāṉ se Acchā), formally known as "Tarānah-e-Hindi" (Urdu:ترانۂ ہندی; "Anthem of the People of Hindustan"), is an Urdu language patriotic song written for children by poet Muhammad Iqbal in the ghazal style of Urdu poetry. The poem was published in the weekly journal Ittehad on 16 August 1904. Publicly recited by Iqbal the following year at Government College, Lahore, British India (now in Pakistan) it quickly became an anthem of opposition to the British Raj. The song, an ode to Hindustan—the land comprising present-day Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, was later published in 1924 in the Urdu book Bang-i-Dara.
The song has remained popular, but only in India. An abridged version is sung and played frequently as a patriotic song and as a marching song of the Indian Armed Forces.
... returning back from work and facing the horror of the times of today and many days .. peace quiet and the solace of happiness robbed again from many .. there is the want to bring cheer and a smile .. but it gets laden with the weight of such immense depression ..
.. and normalcy shifts back a few steps , to attempt again .. not knowing what lies in store .. except the purity of prayer ..
Life shall be shorter for me than the many others that shall live a longer and full life .. may they be safe .. may they spend their times in the joys of togetherness, love and friendship .. and may they leave, as we hope we can, a world that can be the envy of those that have gone by ..
Time ends here again by the morrow, and travel shall replace the addresses above .. the destination of home and the schedules of work shall place themselves at varied levels, and efforts shall prevail to accomplish that which remains in some incompleteness ..
Many of the Blog Ef that comment here and make it readable for me, say they are at times unable to make out the text of the writings and their meanings despite repeated attempts ..
It is not an encumbrance .. for there can be an attempt to resolve this rather sticky issue ..
May I ..?
This is ..
DAY 4018
StrRCiShba Mar 14, 2019 Thu 10:30 PM
Birthday - EF - Amita Fatima Zohra Daheur .. Friday, March 15 .. happy greetings for a happy day - a birthday dear Amita .. lots of happiness and love from us all here at the Ef Center .. !!
.. UPTO HERE it IS ALL CLEAR SURELY ..
Some thoughts drift through during the course of the day and before long they occupy every corner of the mind that thinks matters follows creates .. what ever .. and then suddenly .... it all collapses .. .. into an unforgivable tragedy .... and all that one had ever licensed itself to express, drives the thought winds out of that enclosed environ .. into sombre feel and remorse ..
I AM WISHING TO SAY THAT DURING THE DAY WHEN AT WORK I AM THINKING OF MY LINES FOR THE SHOT IN A SCENE BUT AM ALSO THINKING WHAT SHALL I BE WRITING ON THE BLOG .. AND MANY HAPPY AND INTERESTING IDEAS FORMULATE .. BUT BY THE TIME I SIT MYSELF DOWN IN FRONT OF THE LAPTOP, I COME TO KNOW OF THE HORORS AROUND THE WORLD AND ABOUT, AND IT DAMPENS THE PROCESS OF WHAT I SHOULD BE PUTTING OUT ..
There is ever much that transpires around .. ever much that warrants expression .. a release , an outburst , an unending cry of anguish at most times ..BUT .... there is the evil of restraint .. the command of shut .. the devils of retrospect
I AM SAYING AND MEANING HERE , THAT THERE IS SO MUCH THAT TRANSPIRES DURING THE DAY FOR ME .. A VIDEO TEAM FOLLOWS ME IN WHATEVER I DO .. WHEN I RETURN I VIEW IT AND WANT TO PUT IT ALL OUT FOR MY EF .. BUT WHEN I HEAR AND READ OF THE TRAGEDIES, I FEEL THE NEED TO RESTRAIN MY EXPRESSIONS .. TO CLOSE THOSE IDEAS THAT FORMED EARLIER IN THE DAY, AND THINK BACK ON WHAT TRANSPIRED , IN THE PRESENT AND ALSO IN THE PRESENT TO BE VIEWED IN RETROSPECT .. TO LOOK BACK AND SHARE THAT MOMENT TOO ..
..Retrospection revives past deeds .. some in humoured good , some in not so .. the not so is the fear of expressive release at the times of the time .. and by then the times have long past .. at times even forgotten ..
SO .. I AM SAYING THAT WHEN YOU THINK BACK, IN RETROSPECT , THE EVENTS THE MOMENTS COULD BE HAPPY AND FILLED WITH JOY, AND SOME NOT .. THE FEAR OF THIS IS THE MEDIUM .. THE MEDIUM BEGINS TO JUDGE YOU BY WHAT YOU PUT OUT .. AND SOME OF WHAT YOU WANT TO PUT OUT HAS PASSED ITS TIME, AND FORGOTTEN ..
What then could ever be the condition or codes of expressive conduct towards that which now exists beyond decades .. what ..?..
SO .. HOW SHOULD ONE EXPRESS ONESELF .. WHAT SHOULD BE THE WAY OF PUTTING IT ALL ACROSS .. EVERYTHING THAT IS PUT OUT, AS I SAID MAY NOT BE PALATABLE TO THE ENTIRE EF .. SO DOES ONE USE CODES TO CONVEY , OR WHAT .. OR ..
hehe .. there never is an answer .. is there .. NEVER ..
THERE REALLY IS NEVER AN ANSWER TO THIS WHICH CAN BE UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED .. AND IF I CLAIM TO BE UNIVERSAL, UNBIASED, OF NO CONTROVERSY .. WHICH IS HOW I WOULD LIKE IT TO BE - LIKE IT OR NOT - THERE IS NEVER A CORRECT ANSWER OR QUESTION ..
THIS PLATFORM IS NOT TO WEATHER THE STORMS OF THE VARIOUS MODES THAT WE ARE EXPOSED TO EACH DAY THROUGH REGULAR MEDIA OR CONVERSATIONS OR EXPRESSIONS OF OTHERS .. IT IS NOT A SPACE TO DEFY DEBATE .. I WISH IT TO BE A PLEASANT CONVERSATION BY THE FIRESIDE EACH EVENING .. WHEN I SEE AND HEAR ABUSE AND ANGER AND UNWANTED BICKERING, I AM SO SADDENED THAT IT BRINGS ME SLEEPLESS NIGHTS .. THIS PLATFORM WAS AND IS FORMED BY LOVE FOR LOVE .. WHEN IT BREAKS THAT BARRIER, IT BREAKS MY HEART AND MY SPIRIT .. YES MANY WRITE AND EXPRESS ANGUISH OR COMPLAIN .. BUT THIS IS NOT A COURT OF LAW .. NOR IS IT A DESTINATION TO BRING OUT PERSONAL CASTE CREED RELIGION ISSUES .. WE ARE A ONE SINGULAR FREE AND HAPPY FAMILY .. AND THAT IS HOW I WISH IT TO BE .. IF YOU ARE NOT IN AGREEMENT .. YOU ARE FREE TO LEAVE ..
I SHALL WRITE EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO ONE LISTENING, NO ONE READING , NO ONE COMMENTING ..
I NEVER DID EVER INVITE ANY OF YOU HERE .. WHEN YOU CAME YOU CAME ON YOUR OWN .. I LOVED THAT AND STILL DO , AND SHALL EVER !
BUT IF YOU BRING COMPLAINT AND DISAGREEMENT AND DISRUPTION, I AM NOT INTERESTED AND NEVER WILL BE .. !!!!
AND TODAY I SHALL PUT OUT A COMMENT WRITTEN BY A WELL WISHER THAT WROTE IN TO MY DAUGHTER AFTER ORDERING THAT ICON 50 YRS T-SHIRT .. IT SHALL BE AT THE END OF THIS MISSIVE ..
I tug at my prosthetic left overs and bring in the wonder of this and that and many more .. but am at a distance in understanding .. .. do I need to ..yes perhaps I should .. and therein lies the dilemma .. what and who and which to bring into the uplight of the front .. to some it shall disturb to some cheer to some moan in agonising lament and to some the calm of silence ..calm of silence ..yes a silence to wring out the limitations of the output .. to witness its reverberations, not just on us but mostly on the other .. the other is ever present even when not .. and that is the state to worry .. worry for they pick and adjust to what they wish not what was in its meaning true, but that which stays in the meanings of them .... it be not a curse of modern communication .. it be the world of the times ..Progressive, pertinent, promising, persistent, painstaking, permissive, petulant, primed, prickly, painful .. and eventually referred to in the past tense !I am honoured to be in the company of them that favour expression of every rhyme and reason ..
MUCH OF THIS HAS BEEN EXPLAINED RATHER DELIBERATELY AND EXACTLY IN THE PREVIOUS EXPLANATION ..
I CARE FOR WHAT I EXPRESS .. I CARE FOR IT NOT TO HURT ANY .. I CARE FOR IT TO BRING ALL OF US CLOSER IN LOVE .. TO OVERCOME THE WRETCHED DEBATES ON LIFE AND LIVING AND INCIDENTS THAT ARE SO SO DISTURBING AND TERRIFYING AND SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE ..
WHAT WILL I GET IN GIVING AND EXPRESSING MY GRIEF .. WILL IT STOP .. WILL IT WILL IT TO NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN .. WILL IT ..??
IT SHALL ONLY BECOME MELODIOUS CONTENT FOR THEM THAT MAKE COMMERCE OUT OF IT .. ONCE THE COMMERCE HAS BEEN SUCKED TO ITS BEST BOTTOM LINE FINANCIAL REPORT, THEY SHALL MOVE ON TO THE NEXT TOPIC .. ANOTHER TOPIC THAT SHALL HAVE THE CAPACITY TO FORM ANOTHER MUCH NEEDED CONTENT FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE VEHICLES .. YOU MY EF ARE NOT VEHICLES, NOR CONTAINERS OF CONTENT .. YOU ARE MY LOVE AND MY NEAREST DEAR .. TO HOLD TO EMBRACE TO LAUGH AND TO SMILE IN UNISON .. YES IN UNISON ..
BECAUSE WHEN WE LAUGH AND EXPRESS IN UNISON , IT BRINGS THE GREATEST JOYS TO MY EXISTENCE ..
WHEN YOU STOP IT .. THAT IS AND SHALL BE YOUR WISH .. I SHALL MISS YOU, REMEMBER YOUR PRESENCE OF THE BETTER TIMES AND MOVE ON .. THE BAD AND THE UGLY SHALL NEVER INVADE MY BEING ..
THANK YOU ..
.. and now I wish to put out that which has been written by well wisher .. a moment which i agree upon .. its been titled The Icon .. a term I absolutely disagree with and hate .. but there it is :
“The ICON
Grandiose doesn’t define him With love and prayers He is fortified. One amongst us Is his place Sincere in his humility Is his grace Let him be... With his thoughts And his work Let him be... With whom he loves And those who care. A gifted man Knows where he stands He doesn't seek veneration He doesn't seek adulation Just like us, He seeks joy Just like us, He feels the strain. Fanfare doesn’t sway him Grandiose doesn’t define him With love and prayers He is fortified. One amongst us Is his place Sincere in his humility Is his grace Let him be... With his thoughts And his work Let him be... With whom he loves And those who care.”

We are so excited to have Nandini Bajpai on our blog today to talk about her latest book, A MATCH MADE IN MEHENDI:
Fifteen-year-old Simran “Simi” Sangha comes from a long line of Indian vichole-matchmakers-with a rich history for helping parents find good matches for their grown children. When Simi accidentally sets up her cousin and a soon-to-be lawyer, her family is thrilled that she has the “gift.”
But Simi is an artist, and she doesn’t want to have anything to do with relationships, helicopter parents, and family drama. That is, until she realizes this might be just the thing to improve her and her best friend Noah’s social status. Armed with her family’s ancient guide to finding love, Simi starts a matchmaking service-via an app, of course.
But when she helps connect a wallflower of a girl with the star of the boys’ soccer team, she turns the high school hierarchy topsy-turvy, soon making herself public enemy number one.
The synopsis for A MATCH MADE IN MEHENDI really grabbed my attention! Can you tell us more about the matchmaking Simi uses—and turns into an app—in the book?
Simi has watched her mother and aunt match people all her life and has definitely picked up on their methods. They judge compatibility by paying attention to shared values, priorities, and aesthetics instead of more superficial qualities. To quote from the Shagun Matchmaking Guide, the book passed down in Simi’s family, “Common sense can help judge the suitability of a match. Ask yourself: Do they agree on what’s right, what’s important, and . . .what’s funny?” Simi implements this by creating quizzes and memes for her peers to answer and rate in her dating app. The answers are run through an algorithm designed by her tech savvy brother and that’s how the app finds matches. It’s like automating the very hands-on approach of her foremothers with a lot of help from modern technology.
Simi sounds like a fun character. What did you enjoy most about writing her?
Simi was a fun character to write and it was interesting to try to understand her and be in her head. She did respect her family history but had to push back and test their methods in her own way. I liked her loyalty to her friends and family and how she tried to defend others instead of being a bystander. I also loved how she decided that she did not need permission from anyone to try and make an impact and leave her own mark in the world. It’s hard to make the choice to be your authentic self when it doesn’t fit other people’s idea of cool, and I enjoyed writing about her doing that.
Simi is an artist, and one of the art forms she uses is mehendi. What can you tell our readers about mehendi?
Mehendi, also known as henna, is a form of body decoration that is tightly linked to many ancient customs and traditions in South Asia and other regions where it is grown. The paste used for mehendi comes from the leaves of the mehendi plant…we had a mehendi hedge in a house I lived in growing up in India and I have great memories of mehendi at so many weddings and festivals. Simi is a talented artist and experiments with using mehendi in non-traditional ways for her art. She loves the organic feel of the mehendi dye and the link to her cultural heritage and is inspired to create with it. It also plays a role in finding her own match!
Besides Simi, who are the other major characters in the book? Please give us a brief introduction to them.
Well, there’s Simi’s best friend Noah. He and Simi have been friends since kindergarten and he nudges her to try the app at school to get people out of their perceived lanes and connect with each other. Both Simi and Noah would like to find and date the perfect boy. There’s Navdeep, Simi’s brother, the tech whiz behind the app. He doesn’t look like he’s paying attention, but he always has her back. And Aiden and Suraj…Simi’s crushes, not saying which one she’s with in the end. There are all the couples that Matched! app pairs up too. And there is Amanda, the girl who thinks she deserves all the things she wants, including the most popular boy in school.
Finally, there’s Simi’s extended family including her mom, aunt, and grandmother—the senior matchmakers in the family—and her twenty something cousins Geet and Preet who have absolutely no interest in the family matchmaking tradition.
If you could make an app that would go viral like Simi’s, what would the app be for?
I was asked that question before and my idea was to have an app that could take the list of books you love and tell you what book to read next, but my editor Nikki Garcia came up with a better idea–an app that could find your perfect match based on comparing both your book lists!
According to your website, A MATCH MADE IN MEHENDI is your first U.S. book, but you’ve published before in India. Have you noticed any interesting differences between the two industries?
There are so many differences! In India the young adult genre is very new and right now YA books kind of fall in the crack between children’s books and adult titles, though this is changing. The length of time it takes to go from a manuscript being acquired to being in print is much shorter there. There is no School and Library market for children’s books there yet and very few review journals. There are lots of regional languages apart the national language, Hindi, so the English language market is relatively small. Literary agents are rare too. I could go on…
What 2019 YA books by or about people of color or people from First/Native Nations are you looking forward to reading?
Right now the books at the top of my (very large!) 2019 TBR pile are The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee, Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika Moulite, Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay, and Internment by Samira Ahmed. I’m also looking forward to The Light at the Bottom of the World by London Shah.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about A MATCH MADE IN MEHENDI?
I’d just like to say that A Match Made in Mehendi is a happy, feel-good read that celebrates desi culture and centers joy and I think it’s very important to have books about POC that do that!
Nandini Bajpai’s Bio:
I grew up in New Delhi, India, one of four sisters and many cousins in a family that liked to read. I lived and worked in India, Australia, and the US, before settling in the Boston area with my husband, kids, and a fluctuating number and variety of pets. Although I’ve been a bookseller, systems analyst, TEDx organizer, PTO Mom, animal foster and more, my first love is writing.

The Zoya Factor Review
September 26, 2019
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
Adapting a book into a screenplay is an excruciating task. Especially, when a 450+ page novel has to be condensed into a two and a half hour film. The Zoya Factor maintains the essence of the original, written by popular novelist, Anuja Chauhan, with a reworked manifestation of the narrative. It achieves this by translating the most emphatic and comical scenes onto the screen. Without losing the main plot, it eliminates inconsequential subplots and characters. The film does complete justice to its source material.
The story of a woman who becomes a lucky charm for the Indian cricket team, is a flimsy plot, not just in the film, but in the novel as well. Not much can be done to build upon this idea, which is why the author and screenwriter resort to building characters. The film survives on its intriguing characters and their clever interactions with each other. Some of the most ingenious dialogues have been written for this film. The way dialogue writer, Pradhuman Singh, has translated the hilarious English dialogues from the novel into hysterical Hindi versions for the film, is remarkable. But, without a proper understanding of the Hindi language, the wordplays and double meanings don’t have as strong of an impact. Subtitles dilute the meaning. The target audience for this film is a niche category. Though the film will still be entertaining, someone who isn’t fully invested in understanding the dialogues will miss out on a laughter riot.
Breaking the fourth wall is rarely done with such finesse in Hindi cinema. We become Zoya Solanki. Her professional struggles, her non-existent social life, and her bicker-fests with her brother, become our professional struggles, our non-existent social lives, and our sibling rivalries. We don’t just get an insight into her thoughts, we live life through her eyes. But whenever she laments on her miserable “loser” life, that fantasy is shattered. It’s hard to digest Sonam Kapoor as a loser. Whenever she asks why the Indian cricket captain would care to date a loser like her, I am tempted to say, “Because you are amazing.” This is the one point on which the Zoya from the book and the Zoya from the film do not match. The character in the novel is described as a complete mess, and her insecurities regarding her relationship are justified. But in the film, it is the exact opposite. We are enamored by their chemistry from the very beginning.
The best thing about this film is that it is self-aware. At no point does the film attempt to make us feel as if it is anything more than fleeting time-pass entertainment. It doesn’t skim the surface nor does it delve any deeper. It remains in a very comfortable space. This is what elevates The Zoya Factor a notch higher in comparison to other films in the same camp, such as Aisha or I Hate Luv Storys. Both the latter films are meant for comic amusement, and they deliver on that part. Yet, they try to be more than what they are projected to be, leading to lags in the screenplay.
The Zoya Factor is no special film. It doesn’t have an impactful concept like Article 15, nor does it have the backing of a powerful true story, like Mission Mangal or Uri. But, it does explore the benefits and consequences of placing faith in luck. In Indian society, superstition trumps hard work. No matter how much effort the Indian cricket team put into their game, Zoya would take away all the credit. The film attempts to uncover the fallacy of superstition and belief. But it doesn’t let this message bog down the screenplay. For the comedy, for the romance, and for the sizzling chemistry between the leads, this film is worth a watch.

On this day people fool each other by making fun of each other, but on the next day, the person who becomes stupid on this day is not angry or angry, which is the day's biggest feature. But you know how this day started? Why is April Fool's Day called April 1? Why is it celebrated in Hindi on April Fool's day? What is Gnan? If we do not know why it is celebrated on April Fool's Day - Why is the full flower day celebrated in April History of Hindi on April Fool, however, there is no reason behind celebration on April Fool's Day, but about 2 stories are the most popular; Home-promotion StoriesWhat is celebrated in Hindi on April Fool's Day Why is it called? If we do not know then let's say April Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is supposed to get the first mention of Fules Day in the British author's book 1392.
