How I Saw Miss Beadle Being More Motherly To Laura Then Caroline.
Hey Everyone How are You all doing Today ? Today i will Be talking about One of My Favorite Characters From Little House On the
Prairie and that Is Eva Beadle I really Like how she was Very Kind to Laura and i Love How when she was there for Laura it was Very
Genuine and i could that in there Relationship as Teacher and Student They were really close and i saw that Miss Beadle was
Incredibly sweet and Helpful and Encouraging to Laura i could see that when Laura was Very down and sad and hard on herself it was
Miss Beadle that was there to help her i Love watching the scenes where Laura and Miss Beadle are talking to each other and I Loved
How in season 2 Ep 1 Entitled The Richest man in walnut Grove when Miss Beadle was Talking to Laura about about her Not turning in her
Assignments Twice in a row instead of Being Too Hard on her and being rude and Making her feel bad Miss Beadle Looked at Laura and
said sit down Laura and she said Now we are Friends right ? and said Yes Ma'ma and she said well when you have a Problem you should be
able to tell a friend right ? and Laura said yes and this is when she Offered Laura some New Note Books so that she could get her
Assignments handed in and i Love How Miss Beadle was Very Understanding to Laura and her situation i Love how she was Kind
and sweet and Loving to Laura instead of being mean and Rude about it and I Just Love that a Lot and then also i saw In season 2 Ep
16 Entitled Troublemaker when the Older Boys were Not Listing in school and Laura started Blaming herself saying that it was Her Fault
and Later on during the Ep she Hugs Miss beadle and Tells her that she was very sorry and Miss Beadle says No Darling it was not your
Fault You could see How close they were and How Miss Beadle was Very Happy and Proud to have Laura as Her Student and in a Lot of
ways Miss Beadle was Kinder to Laura then Caroline was if you ask me and i also felt Like Miss Beadle Enjoyed Being around Laura I felt
that Miss Beadle was Happy to talk and be around Laura when it came to Caroline Look i am saying that Caroline was a Bad Mother
because she was Not but i feel that Caroline could have Been a Little Kinder to Laura when she was Younger and i just kinda felt that
Caroline was easily Annoyed with Laura for No Reason Now i am Not saying that Caroline did Not Love Laura Because i know she did But i
feel that Laura was Not really Payed that Much Attention to when she was Little Not Positively anyway if You ask Me I think that Miss
Beadle Gave Laura More Positive Attention then Caroline Did No once again i know that Caroline Loved Laura But sometimes i Just
that the writers would have allowed us to see Caroline being a Little More Kind and Involved with Laura when she was a Little girl well
Thanks for reading have a Great Day Know that God Loves You always and Forever.

490. The 1980 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, November 27, 1980
(the whole parade is here, if you just want the commercials and highlights, it's here)
Randy Hamilton from the soap opera Texas sings "Deep in the Heart of Texas" with a small child? Who is this small child. I want it to be a random child that they chose three minutes before turning the cameras on. Randy doesn't have a Wikipedia page! Sadness.
Ahhh!! Is that a baby Mark Linn Baker in the GE commercial?!
I love the crowd whooping it up for the cast of One 'Mo Time. I was wondering what was behind them --- I think it was the broadcast booth for host Ed McMahon! Just ... there with the saddest looking Woolworth decorations ever.
What a weird closing card (what do you call that?) for this Child World / Children's Palace commercial that aired constantly. Ok, the bear didn't fall on his butt? That was the best shot we could get?
For some reason Marilyn Michaels takes off her gloves while singing "Watching the Parade go Byyy". That couldn't of waited, Marilyn?
Todd Bridges sang a song about the Summer. I felt bad for Todd, he had no back up dancers, just dancing in the street. Was this a time filler? Loved the song!
A baby Glenn Close was there with the cast of Barnum. I feel like Ed is auditioning for the Star Search hosting gig with this parade. I love his energy.
I love the juxtaposition of Bryant Gumbel thanking the Museum of Natural history for letting people warm up in their building with Doodlebug.
Ed sang a song! When was the last time a host SANG.
I thought Cootie ran over a clown, but the clown deliberately laid down in front of him??
Just for us Hampton Roads girlies, Busch Gardens of Williamsburg had a Loch Ness Monster float! It's still at Busch Gardens! The cast of Brigadoon was on the float.
Ed was trying to find a date for Happy Dragon. He said "I guess now that he's 21, he's free to go out in the evening and date whomever he chooses. So if you have an eligible dragon hanging around your house moping, we might be able to set them up and in the years to come, who knows how many dragons we might have in the parade!"
There was a float for everyone's favorite box office flop, Popeye! I think that's supposed to be Olive Oyl?!
1980 was electric football's year. It felt like it was the only toy advertised!
"Tonka's Bear in a Box! Everyone's favorite!"
Finally, a game that looks like one of my dad's vintage fire scanners.
Cowboys were HOT this year, due to the movie Urban Cowboy, and the TV show Dallas. Modern equivalent to this would be this past Summer's Western Barbie! We even had Dean Butler from Little House on the Prairie sing "Don't Fence Me In" while riding a tortoise. The Lone Ranger even showed up. Oh, and even the McDonalds commercial with Ronald was western themed.
While Snoopy couldn't fly this year due to a leg injury, we had Underdog.
Can we discuss how a station wagon is pulling a float. Later on, I saw an Oldsmobile sedan towing the float with the Spinners on it.
This beautiful phone store.
I feel like by the time we were growing up in the late 80s/early 90s, Kermit had more bad days at the parade than good, but 1980 was a good year for him. Just look at him.
Casper is over here looking like the baby from Ally McBeal.
Bob from Sesame Street sang a song while Bert & Ernie danced. Even Oscar liked the song.
Unfortunately, the entire parade isn't on YouTube. Looks like the recorder only set their VCR for two hours. One of the final things you see is Linda Ronstadt and the cast of The Pirates of Penzance. "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" slaps.
Related: previous thanksgiving entries.

What about arguments like you should not be allowed to write about glorifying pedophilia which is a lot of work on ao3 unfortunately
I'm assuming this is in reference to this post that I reblogged literally 11 minutes ago. Oh boy, I was not prepared for this so soon after waking up.
My stance is, basically, there should be no limitations or censorship on any kind of writing. There has never been a period in history where censorship like that hasn't been the first step in a wider fascist uprising. Putting limitations on creative arts like that is barely a half-step away from censoring people's thoughts.
Are there things I find gross and morally iffy at best? Yes. My solution to that? I don't read them.
There's been a lot of talk in the US recently about books "glorifying" certain subjects. But "glorifying" is a very vague and often inaccurate word. Do the Little House on the Prairie books "glorify" living in a dugout? Does To Kill a Mockingbird glorify racism? Does Lolita glorify pedophilia? No, that's simply something that's included in the plot. The Little House books take place in a time when living in a dugout was a part of like. Mockingbird takes place in the South during Jim Crow. And Lolita includes pedophilia because it's about how gross and creepy pedophilia is.
I've said this in several arguments with conservative family members regarding the banning of books in American schools: "There is a stark difference between a book 'glorifying' something immoral and it simply being a part of the book."
The only book that comes to mind that actually glorifies something morally bad is Gone with the Wind, which glorifies the pre-Civil War American South and the horrible practice of slavery. Do I think we should ban or otherwise censor that book? Or the movie that's based on it?
No.
Not only is Gone with the Wind and important piece of American literary history (and the movie is arguable even more important), it is, despite its faults, a good book. It's a tale of female perseverance at a time when women were expected to just get married and have babies. It's about how female friendships are more important that any petty romantic squabbles. It's about how not everyone deserves a happy ending.
For the movie, HBO and TCM (I am a devoted TCM fan) have filmed a ~15 minute disclaimer video to play before the movie discussing it's faults and how we, as a modern society who now agrees (mostly) that slavery and racism is wrong, should view the film. Jaqueline Stewart hosts that video, as well as a very interesting panel discussion about the movie here that I highly recommend.
All this to say, it is important that we acknowledge the faults in literature. But I have never encountered a book, even though it may have many faults, that I think should be banned.
And I have the same philosophy about fanfic. I may think it's gross and icky, but I do not have the right to tell someone what they can read or write.
And... I do think we should acknowledge the irony of you sending this ask to a blog that has literally written 200k words of a fanfiction focused on the romance between two first cousins. Just a thought.

I just want to say, after seeing some of it come across my dash again, because after all, people reblog and reblog and reblog... I feel that guilt-tripping readers is ineffective at best and gets them hostile at worst. I know that this is the time that we all scream into the void at the encroaching dark and holy shit the world's messed up and in the Information Age we all get to know a lot more than our ancestors did, but with apologies to the mutual I saw reblogging things he cares about (and I reblog the same subject matter from them and others), just... the way one post was worded just got me thinking on a long philosophical track. Some of us are doing what we can in light of the situation, which is not much, because we are not in power. All we have is our personal vote / no vote / I trusted you and you let me down lists in our heads. Some of us have written congresscritters whom we know aren't listening. Some who can give money and are sure they are giving to organisations that won't be intercepted and the money gobbled up have been giving. Some are afraid that's going to happen and are living paycheck to paycheck so all we have is our griping. (And some of us have disabilities physical, psychiatric and transportational that keep us from attending protests). So some of us might be doing what we can, but it's not enough and can't be. Anyway, the philosophical train of thought that my brain got onto:
I don't think it actually does much to tell people "What you're doing now is what you would have done during the Holocaust!" or "What you're doing now is what you'd be doing during slavery!" - this is used as a guilt trip, or perhaps a mirror to hold up to people who like to pretend that they are more heroic than they are. What about those of us who do not think we are particularly good? A friend of mine and I got to talking once about old books and how some people want to cancel or censor old literature, or who will look at you funny if you say you enjoyed old lit. The "Little House on the Prairie" books got brought up. I used to read those as a kid. I think I got up to the 4th or 5th book? And the last time I was reading them was when I was 8-9? My friend read them more recently and was talking about how one of the characters / protagonist's mother said "The only good Indian is a dead Indian," which is horrible, but honestly was a common sentiment among white settlers at the time and probably something that the author's mother had said. We agreed that censoring books isn't a good thing, instead, teaching children critical thinking skills and discernment is better. Kids ought to know the shit parts of history. My friend further went into the chilling conclusion that if we had lived in that time and place, we'd probably have the same sentiment, because a lot of your environment influences you. I agreed that it was a likely scenario, but maybe not - as some people are ahead of their time and I have put away a lot of bigotries I was raised in / encountered early on and used to have as I have grown and met people and have had life experiences. (Ex-Evangelical). Also, the above "guilt trip type of tumblr / twitter post" made me think to something I said on a blog commentary pretty soon after tRump was elected about how I'd expected that if shit really hit the fan, that I might just keep my head down. We all like to think that we would go down fighting the establishment, every one of us a Katniss Everdeen with a bow in our hand or something, but the reality is, most people just keep their heads down and survive. And I'm not a proud enough person to think that I am going to be doing anything else. "If I was a German during the Holocaust" - depending upon how much I knew and my living/financial situation, well, yeah, I expect I'd be doing what I am doing now: Writing a lot of fiction short stories with symbolism indicting horrible leaders and political and cultural situations that said leaders are too stupid to get the symbolism of (hopefully) and sadly, hardly anybody reads. Slavery days? Am I a Southerner or a Northerner? Most of my ancestry comes from Sweden, so I'd say I'd be there... but if American then... writing stuff with fantasy-ized slavery among varying castes of magical woodland animals or something in order to gentle the reader into seeing reality? And otherwise just kind of keeping my head down, surviving, not materially being able to do much?
#politics#philosphy#I saw an excellent ad about american gun violence#using a drowning child as symbolsm#but it is directed at leaders although maybe at voters#although the posts coming across my dash are about the genocide in real time#that I see bits of every day on cnn#and I honestly don't think policies on that are going to change#until a certain generation withers away#and certain american religious sentiments also do#our foreign policy is messed up because of evangelical christian nationalists#and you can be christian without being one of them#if you're a progressive christian they hate you too trust me they hate me#and get to star in my snarky stories#it's about all I can do#cw: slurs#cw: anti-indigenous slur#cw: anti-indigenous slur from a very old biographical novel#cw: bigotry#cw: bigotry in old books

PIXAR. IS. NOT. DISNEY.
to all of those parents saying that disney has betrayed them by making such an inappropriate movie, disney animation studios did not create this film. pixar notoriously puts out films that are not just for kids. adults have been loving their work for years and pixar knows this. now, there is nothing wrong or inappropriate about the subject matter of turning red, but itās also not targeted toward four year olds who are going to demand merch so they can storm disney world dressed as their favorite character. pixar movies are often coming of age stories and turning red is one of their most authentic ones. some parents are less focused on the subject matter and are angry about the depiction of a child daring to defy their parents. to them i say: one, you clearly donāt remember your own childhood accurately and two, what pixar movies have you been watching all these years?? nemo defied his father and wound up being kidnapped for it. remi defied his father and became a world famous chef. russell defied his elder and wound up being integral to carlās survival. merida defied her mother and in doing so changed her kingdom for the better. riley stole her momās credit card, miguel lied to his entire family, luca snuck up to the surface, and there are probably other examples iām forgetting. pixar has been doing this for years and if you have a problem with turning red then you have a problem with pixar not disney. you also have a problem with reality but i can tell you to avoid pixar films in the future easier than unpacking all of that right now.

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between mori kei and natural kei?
@wizard-gender
Mori Kei, which translates to 'forest style' is a fashion that emphasizes comfortable layering, often with lace and embroidered details, and deemphasizes the waist. The layers make for complicated lines and the color palette tends to be very neutral.
Here's an example of a classic Mori coordinate:
Natural Kei is actually a style called PINK HOUSE. The all caps is correct here. PINK HOUSE is also the brand name behind the style. It is a 'prairie style' with fashion pieces that look like they belong in old American Westerns and shows like Little House on the Prairie. The style uses lots of floral prints, bold colors, and simple design lines. When cottagecore lovers post fashion, this is what they're going for.
Here's an example from the brand:
While they are two different styles, they are considered 'sister' styles because they intersect. There are lots of Mori outfits that could be called PINK HOUSE and vice-versa.
Like this one which is considered simplified Mori, bit also makes for a very prairie look.
If you would like more info on this topic, please check out @forestsandtea and her incredible I Don't Know Much But I'm Learning blog.
It is a blog dedicated to Mori Kei and she talks about PINK HOUSE in this post.
I hope I answered your question. If you have any others, please ask!

Alot of people (not including you): *ripping into Spirit untamed and hating on it cause it defeats the purpose of the original*
Me: *Thinks it's a cute and sweet movie and chooses to see it as a separate entity from the original, but is scared to say anything cause I don't wanna get yelled at* šššš§
You're allowed to say whatever you want about Spirit. No matter how people react, you are allowed to post your opinions on a movie on your blog. HOWEVER, amidst the "I like new Spirit actually" versus "new Spirit is bad" discourse, I am seeing a FATAL miscommunication.
People who like new Spirit because it's a cute show are valid, but I see a LOT of them claiming people who criticize the new show only do so because "it's not LIKE the original, ugh my nostalgia," when the reality of it is people are criticizing new Spirit because it completely erases the real issues the original Spirit dealt with.
OG Spirit unapologetically portrayed white colonizers as THE bad guys. The whole movie was an allegory for how Native Americans were treated when the west was colonized. And from a horse's perspective, the railroad was bad. The people were bad. The Lakota tribe was... ultimately an ally, but still not where Spirit BELONGED. And taking a story Like That and turning it into a completely disconnected franchise, turning it into "Spirit (jr) willingly becomes a pet for a girl in a white settlemtent, tee hee, fun little house on the prairie days" story is GROSS. I could go more indepth, but I think you get the point.
People can like new Spirit. But doing so, and then shit talking anyone who criticizes the very REAL, HARMFUL problems of new Spirit comes off as really tone deaf and insensitive. It's not about "uh it's not like my original." It's about the racism and disrespect inherent in erasing the original point of the story.
I'm not yelling at you or anything! And the fact that you have the consciousness to be aware that you might get yelled at and you dont want to get yelled at tells me you're more willing to hear this than some. So like, if you just keep in mind the actual issues of new Spirit and you don't have an attitude of condemnation towards anyone who criticizes it, go ahead and post what you want! Tell people how much you loved it; make edits or headcanons or just talk about what you like in the new series. I personally enjoyed the new movie a lot, and I too choose to approach it from the angle of "Spirit? Oh, what a coincidence! There was a movie named Spirit back in my day. They are totally unrelated!"
#sorry if this came off as harsh or anything; it was more of a thought dump#but im also not getting into it with anyone else ever again so i wanted to be as transparent as possible#so thanks for your patience haha#spirit untamed#spirit#ask#anon#we all know the TRUE sequel was that sims horses animated series on youtube back in the day

Laura Needed Caroline More Then What People Think A Little House On the Prairie Blog Post.
Hey Everyone so Today i will be talking about Laura and Bringing up some of the times that felt that Laura Needed Caroline and did not
get to have her be there for her Okay so starting at Number 1 Happened In season 2 Ep 16 Entitled Troublemaker and this is where
the Teacher was being mean to Laura for no reason and during this Ep Caroline Ended up saying something that i kinda felt was a little
rude she said she is Not the Student Mary is and she Never will be but she dose try hard okay so wait if you really feel that way Caroline
like if you really feel that Laura was Not a Very Good Student then how come you Never sat down and Helped her with her school work ?
that was something that i felt was a Missed opportunity on the writers part Because they could have Made it where Laura and
Caroline Improved on Laura school work and made her feel a little More Confident about school and all and in season 1 Ep 3 Entitled
Country Girls when the Girls First came to the school Laura went over to Miss Beadle and said that she did not know how to read or
write like at all and that all she really knew was her ABCs and Laura was Like 8 or 9 years old and i am sitting there watching the show
and i am thinking wait so you have Mary who 11 years old who already knows how to read and write and then you have Laura who is 8 years
old and she dose not know anything a side from her ABCs really ? like come on how can you spend all that time working with one child to
make sure that they know how to read and write and yet not really work with the other one like that much at all for me i feel that Laura
Needed Caroline to help her and work with her on her school work so that Laura could feel More Confident when it came to reading and
writing and the Next thing that i wish that the writers would have done was in season 4 Ep 3 Entitled My Ellen and this is where Laura
gets Kidnapped By a women in Town and during one of the scenes in that Ep Charles had been Looking for Laura all day and it was Dark
By the time he came home from Looking for her and he still had not found her yet and in the scene he is walking up to the House he dose
not have Laura with him and Caroline Opens the door and she sees that he dose not have Laura with him and she Just stands there Like
with Not Emotion at all she is not crying she is not Screaming she is Not asking where Laura is she shows Little to no Concern and Once
again i am not saying that Caroline did Not Love Laura but i feel that there were times that Caroline should have stood up for Laura and
been there for Laura and i wish that the writers would have Given Caroline More to do and say when it came to standing up for Laura
when she was Little Because Laura Needed Caroline when she was a Little girl as well Laura needed Caroline too Not Just Mary Laura
Needed Caroline More then what People think that is the way i see it any way well Thanks for reading have a Great day Know that you are
Loved wanted and cared for by God always and Forever and Once again i am not saying that Caroline did not Love Laura because i
know she did i Just wish that the writers of the show would have written More Scenes and time in there for Laura and Caroline when
Laura was Little Like they did for Mary and Charles so yeah i Just wish that we did not have to wait so Long Like well into Laura teen
Years to Even see Caroline really have anything to do with Laura on a Regular bases and i Just wish that we could have seen Caroline and
Laura Mother Daughter Relationship a Lot sooner that is that is all i am trying to say Because Like i said Laura Needed Caroline too it was
Just Mary that Needed her Laura was Her Daughter as well and i Just Kinda felt Bad for Laura that she did not get a Lot of Time with
Caroline when she was Little well Thanks for reading Have a Great Day .

Hi! I love your blog and really enjoy seeing your posts on my dash! Like you, I don't really watch much current television and prefer the older shows; Family Ties is definitely a favourite! I recall a while back you mentioned you were watching through Little House on the Prairie, and I just wanted to ask how you're liking it so far and what you think! Hope you're doing well!
Hello! Thanks so much for the kind words! Yes, I'm still making my way through Little House and am thoroughly enjoying it. I'm almost half way through season 5. It's such a great show. This show deals with a lot of heavy, serious topics (which surprised me! I didn't expect it to make me cry as much as it does!) but it still manages to give me the warm fuzzies.
Love me a show about a tight-knit, loving family who stick together through anything and always emphasize Doing The Right Thing. Very nice. Charles and Carloline are amazing parents. Love the Ingalls girls (+ Albert! He's adorable) and the little community of Walnut Grove. Mr. Edwards? Wonderful man--though I MISS HIM, I HOPE HE RETURNS AT SOME POINT. Doc Baker? Delightful. Nellie and Harriet Oleson? Literally have never had TV characters infuriate me more than they do. Awful. I keep waiting for them to become sympathetic or get some redeeming qualities and it just...isn't happening.
Overall great show. Thanks for the ask!

Two Weeks in Denver
The Verdict:
We spent 13 nights in Denver (well actually, just south of Denver in Greenwood Village). With the beautiful outdoors, friendly people, and the best/chillest drivers of anywhere we've driven in the U.S., it was our favorite stop so far! It seems like a wonderful place to live. Denver is large and seems to have lots of stuff to do in the city and surrounding areas, so this post covers just a fraction of the options.
Things to Do:
Hiking (Ranked in order of our most to least recommended)
Rocky Mountain National Park (~2 hrs drive): Check out our RMNP blog post!
Boulder (45 min drive): We didn't have a chance to hike in Boulder, but we hear it's awesome. We had hoped to stop by Chautauqua Park to check out the trails (we read that Enchanted Mesa Trail was a good 4-miler) or El Dorado Canyon State Park. We did enjoy walking along Pearl Street, where there are plenty of tasty treats (we enjoyed smoothie bowls) and appreciated the free parking in the city's covered parking garages (we parked at 1500 Pearl, which was a perfect location). Logistics: Waze told us there was a toll on the Interstate to Boulder, but Google Maps thought it was a toll-free drive. The answer? There is an optional toll lane on the highway, but you can make the trip in the toll-free lanes.
Red Rocks (30-40 min drive): This is a naturally occurring amphitheatre that is best known for evening concerts against an incredibly scenic vista. While we weren't looking for a crowded concert during the pandemic, we visited in the morning and were blown away by how beautiful the amphitheatre was (and how many stairs there were to get to the top!). We also walked the beautiful 1.4 mile Red Rocks Trading Post Trail loop, which also had a moderate amount of uphill/downhill. It was VERY hot and sunny when we got there around 10:30 a.m.; though the weather app said it was below 80 degrees, the sun was really beating down. Next time, we'd go earlier in the day (later can be tricker due to concerts in the evenings) for better weather and hopefully smaller crowds. Logistics: We just entered Red Rocks into Google Maps and it took us to a parking lot near the amphitheatre. The trail was just a couple minutes' walk from the parking area, near the Trading Post building. Parking was free and not too hard to find.
Vail/Breckenridge area (~90 mins drive): We didn't have a chance to visit, but it sounds like there's very nice hiking around here in the summer.
Garden of the Gods and Pike's Peak in Colorado Springs (~1 hr drive): When we got a nail in our tire and had to get the tire replaced, the nice guy at Firestone highly recommended we visit these areas for beautiful scenery. While we didn't make it, we read that Garden of the Gods can get very crowded, especially with Instagram-focused tourists more so than a hiking acrowd. We also read that it's not quite as nice as the Utah National Parks or Sedona. Pike's Peak also sounds touristy; there is a coveted tram that takes you to the top, at 14K feet of elevation -- after moderate altitude sickness at RMNP, we decided to sit this one out.
Denver Neighborhoods & Sights (Ranked in order of our most to least-recommended)
Denver Botanic Gardens (free with American Horticultural Society membership): This is one of the most beautiful botanic gardens we've ever seen, anywhere. It was also excruciatingly crowded on a Saturday morning and a very un-fun experience to find parking. Despite how stunning the gardens are, we preferred the much less crowded walk through Cheesman Park and the cute surrounding neighborhood. Logistics:Ā If the Botanic Gardens parking garage and parking lot are full, park for free at nearby Congress Park, Cheesman Park, or on a random side street a 5+ min walk from the gardens. Be observant of street signs to make sure you havenāt parked in a residential area that requires a parking permit.
RiNo (River North Arts District): About a 10 minute drive from downtown, RiNo is a hip area full of breweries, street art, and run-down looking houses. On a Saturday around 2pm, street parking was sparse (but free) and the breweries seemed packed with people. We read that the street murals are at their best on 26th-31st streets between Larimer & Walnut, and we weren't blown away in comparison to Plaza Walls in Oklahoma City or The Mission in San Francisco. Due to the extreme heat we didn't stick around, but we were interested in checking out Finns Manor (cocktails + food trucks), Denver Central Market (High Point Creamery apparently offers an ice cream flight?!), and a few breweries. Maybe next time! Logistics: Street parking is free.
Washington Park: This is very nice park for a stroll. When we went on a Saturday evening around sunset, it wasnāt very crowded. The surrounding neighborhood looks very nice, and there seem to be good places to eat nearby (our friend suggested Sushi Den, though we didnāt have a chance to try it out). We saw someone paddleboarding on the water, which looked picturesque! Logistics: There are parking lots and ample street parking around the park.
Sloanās LakeĀ (near Highland neighborhood): The park has a beautiful lake with a sizeable trail going around it. It reminded us of Lake Merritt in Oakland. When we went on a Sunday evening, it was somewhat busy with people running, walking, biking, and on scooters/skateboards/roller blades, and there was lots of goose poo everywhere. The surrounding area wasnāt quite as nice as that around Cheesman Park or Washington Park, but we still liked the lake. Note there were no water activities allowed -- signs indicated the water sometimes gets too unclean to enter.Ā Edgwater MarketĀ is a few minutes away (we recommend driving as the walk isnāt very nice) and has a cute outdoor patio and lots of different types of ethnic food to try out (we especially liked the veggie pesto crepe at the crepe stand). Logistics: There are parking lots at the lake and the market.
LoDo (Lower Downtown): The downtown area is meh, you can skip it if you're short on time. If you go, you can walk through Larimer Square, a small, cute block of shops and eateries with outdoor seating that is roped off from cars; check out Union Station, where the Amtrak goes and there are a bunch of places to eat/get coffee (including the overrated Snooze AM eatery - reserve your spot in line 1-2 hrs in advance if going and be sure to get the sweet potato pancake); walk the 16th Street Mall, a very touristy street of more shops and eateries (not as cute as Larimer Square, but a pro is there is a free bus that takes you up and down this long street); and walk by Coors Field if you're a baseball fan. Logistics: Parking lots are very expensive, but we didn't find it too difficult to find 2-hour street parking ($1/hour, you can pay by card at the meter or with the PayByPhone app; free on Sundays and holidays).
Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (free, 20-30 mins from city center): This is a beautiful area in northeast Denver that you can drive through, listen to their excellent guided podcast, and spot some neat wildlife. The area is known for bison, deer, prairie dogs, and birds; we saw some of these animals. This was a great option to stay in our air-conditioned car on a very hot day, rather than being out for a hike. Logistics: There is a Visitor Center that you can stop by if youād like (we didnāt), otherwise just download the Rocky Mountain Arsenal podcast on your phone and start the drive!
What to Eat (Vegetarian Edition)
We did not take advantage of Denverās food options, so what we are sharing here are mostly recommendations from our friends / places we would love to try if we had more time here.
Safta (Mediterranean)Ā - Upscale; close to downtown. Appears to have outdoor seating and advance reservations are recommended
Uchi (Japanese) - Upscale; close to downtown. Has a separate vegetarian menu including a multi-course tasting. Reservations can be hard to come by if you donāt book well in advance. They also accept walk-ins, and they do have outdoor seating if youāre COVID-conscious (or just like eating outside!)
Brunch places with hype: Snooze AM EateryĀ (multiple locations, get on the Yelp waitlist at least an hour in advance, known for excellent pancakes),Ā SassafrassĀ (we didnāt try it), and Root DownĀ (we also didnāt try it)
Markets: Denver Central Market (in RiNo), Edgewater Public Market (by Sloan Lake / Highlands neighborhood; we loved the crepes and thought the Ethiopian food was mediocre), Stanley MarketplaceĀ (Aurora)
Other places that were recommended to us were Ash Kara (Mediterranean), El Five (Mediterranean, good views), Sushi Den (Japanese),Ā and Vital RootĀ (which is apparently by a lot of good vegetarian-friendly restaurants + breweries near Berkeley/Tennyson Street), Sputnik
Dessert:Ā I very much wanted to try High Point CreameryĀ (multiple locations) as it seems to have many vegan options and an ice cream flight! Little Man Ice Cream also came recommended
Where to Stay
We're definitely not experts on this, but here are a few thoughts based on our trip!
Near Cheesman ParkĀ and Washington ParkĀ seem like a lovely areas to stay -- the parks are really nice and the surrounding neighborhoods seem pretty safe and upscale. We didn't come across any available airbnbs in this neighborhoods.
Greenwood Village (~20 mins drive south of Denver, close to Centennial, CO). We stayed in the Marriott Residence Inn Tech Center (the 2 bed/2 ba is good for two people working from home during the week) and loved the area. Within a 5 minute drive there are cute parks for a morning jog, plenty of fast casual eateries (we were partial to the Torchy's and Schlotzsky's nearby), and even the excellent Peak View Brewing Company (okay so itās a brewery in a suburban strip mall, but the outdoor patio is great and the jalapeno pretzel and the peanut butter porter were a hit!). Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Safeway are within a ~10 minute drive.

Where Is Home?
We talk about retirement a lot.Ā A LOT.Ā The mister wants out of the south because he hates the hot, sticky weather.Ā I want out of the south for a variety of different reasons.Ā He tears up when he thinks about leaving this house.Ā I get excited thinking of a house with better storage, maybe even a walk-in closet and a big pantry.Ā He loves the idea of townhouse living and all of the freedom it provides.Ā I love the idea of half a football field between me and a neighbor.Ā I wouldnāt mind being snug against a neighbor if we were in a walkable little town and I could have a white picket fence.Ā As we age into our golden years I want to be on city water and city sewer.Ā I do not want to be ninety when the well runs dry or the septic system has a fit.Ā Nope. No, thank you.Ā We have discussed towns from Maine to Arizona and are constantly trading articles about property taxes and real estate markets.Ā Night after night I search Zillow, Realtor, Trulia (oh, those handy dandy crime maps!) and so on.Ā Iāll send Mickey a house in Maryland to admire and mention that itās just two hours from the worldās cutest grandgirl.Ā He responds that he loves it.Ā Then I send him a townhouse near Tucson and he says the same thing.Ā Iām getting nowhere with this guy. Side note: Yes, I know Arizona gets very hot, but it is not humid. HUGE difference. Also, Arizona has two enormous positives - we could escape allergies and my hair would behave.Ā Ā If you had my hair youād know thatās more important than the property taxes.Ā Two major negatives would be that itās too far from family and I canāt imagine never experiencing another autumn. Iām happily willing to give the townhouse idea serious consideration.Ā Ā I know that Mickey would love to never weed eat and edge another yard.Ā Remember the good old days when no one did that?Ā My main issue with townhouses is that they all tend to be multiple stories - sometimes three floors.Ā Wherever we retire, thatās where weāre going to die.Ā I donāt want to be unable to navigate my own home when Iām old.Ā Same reason I refuse to have a basement laundry, I donāt want to drag baskets of clothes up and down basement stairs when Iām a little old lady.Ā You know damn well a cat would trip me and Mickey wouldnāt miss me until he got hungry.Ā Of all the chores Iād be willing to expire while doing, laundry is not in the top three. Weāre not lottery winners so our options are limited.Ā When we sell this house weāll make a tasty profit that will allow us to find a comfortable home - nothing fancy, but we wonāt be in a box under bridge.Ā I can make any home pretty, but the bones have to be good.Ā Iām more concerned with structure and mechanics.Ā Who needs a beautiful house with a bad roof or an hvac system on its last leg?Ā Ā The region definitely determines what you get for your money.Ā For the same price you can have this sort of square footage in the south (complete with inground pool)...
or you can opt for proximity to Portland, Maine and get this.
The second house is new construction, but itās itty bitty, has well water and septic, and is missing the all-important garage that weād need up north.Ā This is a struggle, people.Ā We just want a nice little house in a nice little town, hopefully one that will meet our needs as we get older. Other items on our wish list?Ā Small town living with easy access to a larger city and a decent international airport.Ā Part of my hunt includes exploring each townās library website (a vibrant, busy library says a lot about a place) as well as their Facebook page.Ā Looking past the mouthy keyboard warriors that lurk on every page, you can still get a good idea of the townās vibe.Ā Letās see - fair property taxes, decent cost of living, small town feel, good airport, seasons...sounds like we should stay put and just endure long, sticky summers, right? Ā Ugh, no. Ā Our reasons for wanting to relocate are so much more than just the summers.Ā Ā Soooo, months and months of searching keep leading me to one state that ticks all of our boxes and then some.Ā Minnesota.Ā A myriad of cute towns surround Minneapolis and St. Paul, all with easy access to the fabulous airport.Ā Iām crazy about New Ulm (I love a town with lots of festivals) and I wouldnāt be heartbroken to live in Mankato, Owatonna, or a number of others.Ā Real estate is affordable, taxes are fair (and are used wisely!), all four seasons are present and accounted for, and quality of life seems really good - from healthcare to education to crime, they seem to have a handle on it.
and you knew there was a but, right?Ā We could happily move there knowing that weād be close to at least one of our kids.Ā Matt lives in Minneapolis and the thought of having him nearby warms my heart.Ā But heās weighing the pros and cons of an opportunity that would take him to the east coast and more likely to far flung parts of the world. Itās quite possible that heād be gone in a flash and weād be in Minnesota, once again far from family. Right now weāre a dayās drive from everyone except Matt. Truly, we could do it in a day but it would be a miserable thirteen to fourteen hours. I have scoured Maryland and settled on a little place called Ocean Pines.Ā Itās okay, a bit further than Iād like to be from airports, etc -Ā itās between two to two and a half hours to Baltimore, D.C. or Philadelphiaās.Ā That also means itās just two hours from my favorite little girl. That would be HEAVEN.Ā But who retires to one of the most expensive states to live in?Ā Would it make our golden years miserable?Ā Who wants to pinch pennies when you should be enjoying life?Ā HELP!!Ā Where is home?Ā I left Alaska more than twenty years ago, the mister was a Florida boy -Ā we donāt want to live in either place.Ā I love the prairie,Ā he loves the mountains.Ā At one point we were looking at real estate on Prince Edward IslandĀ (affordable and gorgeous!) but Canada doesnāt want us. Seriously, we filled out the online immigration form.Ā We wouldnāt be able to live there year roundĀ and I canāt imagine having to go squat across the border for a couple of months every year once weāre old and rickety.Ā Ā There are pros and cons to every place weāve looked.Ā No spot is perfect and we have to decide what we can and canāt live without.Ā If someone could just plop this house down next to my grandbaby Iāll shut up about this forever.
Imagine that house surrounded by hydrangeas in the summer.Ā I donāt think thatās too much to ask - just a little pink house near some people I love.Ā Some snow would be nice now and then. What a lovely dream. This boring blog post has been brought to you courtesy of my latest level of boredom.Ā It was either this or go dust the bedrooms, so you had to pay the price for my laziness.Ā Ā My plan for this evening is to watch the Golden Globes and through that maybe find something interesting to watch.Ā Weāre approaching the first anniversary of when we locked down here on the Pullen spread and weāve run out of shows to binge.Ā Remember how naĆÆve we all were when we thought weād watch Tiger King and then lockdown would be over?Ā At least weāre headed in the right direction now.Ā Thatās something.Ā Iām thrilled that my mother is fully vaccinated and so is Dr. Matt.Ā A handful of my dear friends are also protected now.Ā Iāve lost some friends to this horrible virus, including the husband of a dear Rat Patrol member.Ā Our little group now includes a widow for the first time. Thereās been so much heartbreak over the last year.Ā Iām ready for it to stop. Okay - what a crazy, rambling post.Ā I think Iāll go dust.Ā Itās probably more productive.Ā If youāre still here, you deserve a cookie.Ā Treat yourself!Ā If you happen to know of the perfect town (I really just want to live in Stars Hollow) send me a message!Ā Iāll put my dust rag down and check it out! Sending out lots of love on this drippy Saturday. Stay safe, stay well, stay sane. XOXO - Nancy

Life Calling to Us
An astrologer I avidly follow and study closely is Ernst Wilhelm whose philosophy of astrology includes the practice of observing ālife calling to usā by observing the symbols and energy around us. Astrocartography and local astrology move towards this idea, but Ernst has always claimed it to be much simpler. He sees astrology living with us on earth, in our environment, and our day-to-day lives. So while a solar return foretells the year, paying attention the day of your birthday can outline it just as well. Likewise, while a horary chart can answer a question, a read of the landscape at the right moment can too. One example Wilhelm gives seeing a hawk fly by as you ponder when youāll hear back from a friend. The hawk is the messenger and youāll have your answer soon.Ā
Per Wilhelmās philosophy these events are entwined with you and your natal chart and your location on the planet.Ā
To me it sounded akin to the way I try to intuitively move through life by reading the currents of life, but the details felt like a reach. And although Ernst was able to operationalize the process of reading the world in a way that made sense to me, in practice, I remain doubtful of my daily interpretation of lifeās events.Ā But Iāve been trying.Ā
A Solar Return in a Day
This Aquarius season I have been attempting to read the world like Ernst. To start I took up his recommendation and purchasedĀ these cards, called Medicine Cards (created by Jamie Sams and David Carson) and Iāve been watching for animals. Coincidences. Events. So now the crow that routinely uses the gutter hanging over my corner bedroom window as a birdbath is no longer just a bird.Ā Itās nice to know the house I lived in years ago was actually protected by the countless neighborhood raccoons that would greet my return, and not haunted by them. Or that the summer hummingbirds in my garden portend joy. Even the cobwebs are encouraging. And because my birthday passed by recently, I thought I would document the day to observe how closely it aligned with my solar return. Here is roughly what happened:
1) so very little sleep and late to everything 2) weird technical outages in public situations 3) waited in the wrong line at the DMV for nearly 45 minutes 4) almost failed my vision test due to a misunderstanding 5) rare successful shopping trip (I am super picky about clothes) 6) so many chatty people around me everywhere all the time 7) felt strangely chatty myself 8) one of the more lovely evenings in recent memory 9) an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love 10) some encouraging financial news
Based on this day it would seem the year will be stressful, frenetic, busy, not as planned, bureaucratic and delayed due to miscommunications. The second half looks social, encouraging and optimistic.Ā
In comparison my solar return looks like a lot of communication work (school crap) and a lot of behind the scenes work. Perhaps the clothes are all about finding the right fit with my research? Jupiter is in my solar returnās second house so maybe my income looks like it could increase this year. And I ate salmon for dinner which I hope symbolically means more inner wisdom to come? Iām crossing my fingers.
The Symbolism of Animals
Sadly I saw few living animals during the day, but I did use the Medicine cards to identify the animal totems that walk beside me so Iāll know their meaning when I see them in the future. For my left side of nurturing I pulled a butterfly (meaning transformation -- and Psyche!), and for my right side of fatherly protection I pulled a dog (loyalty), and horse (power). Above I linked to a blog which has posted the contents of the book so you can read about the animals that routinely come into your life and their meaning. And although I did not notice any butterflies, dogs, or horses on the big day, a friend of mine reported being attacked by a mountain lion on hers. The symbolism of the mountain lion is a call to leadership -- which I guess technically she hadĀ been fleeing much like the lion that chased her down the hill. And I did run into a horse in the city during my jog a few weeks ago while feeling particularly empowered. I remain unconvinced for the most part, but it has been fun looking at the world with this lens for a bit. And Iām still wondering what the stink bug invasion of my house indicates. My partner informs me we just need better insulation.
Here is a breakdown of animal meanings from Sams & Carsonās Medicine Cards.
