Ember's Blood: Chapter 1, The Capital
Part 2
There are tunnels underneath the Black Gap, though nearly all are blocked or discovered now. This last one would put them out about four miles from Half-moon ridge, a system of caves and tunnels used frequently by travelers.
It’s the melting season, and many areas would become flooded as snow melts from the mountains and sends a surge of water rippling through the river system. Most put off their traveling until afterwards, but Smalls and Wilfred go right through it. Ironically, travel is safer now because no one else will.
The tunnels are cramped, dark, and wet, a combination Smalls decides is never pleasant no matter the context.
Smalls knows it’s odd, but he’s never liked being underground. It’s a dislike that’s a borderline fear- an extremely strange fear for a rabbit. He hates feeling trapped or stuck. He doesn’t even like being indoors. Too much like suffocating. But it’s necessary to cross the black gap.
The Black Gap is a dangerous stretch of burned land. Morbin Blackhawk had decimated the capital and then humiliated Smalls’ people further by tearing down their greatest strength; he’d burned the wood. Just thinking about it infuriates Smalls. Even as a child, he’d seethed and chafed underneath Morbin’s authority, muttering threats of poisoning and death that Wilfred had silenced in order to keep him alive. Most twelve-year-olds were interested in baseball or fairytales. Smalls had been interested in learning every way possible to kill a person.
His dedication to his training is what got him through Daggler’s insane training programs, through the nightmarish court, through losing brother after brother and sister after sister. Learning to turn off his feelings has saved his life on more than one occasion. It scares him, sometimes, how easily and unemotionally he can do incredibly hard things-how easy it is for him to fight and kill, now. It’s made him a good soldier, though. An even better assassin.
Feeling things is dangerous during a war.
But a part of him is tired of only feeling anger and emptiness.
Part of him wants a real reason to keep going-not just fable phantoms he’s half convinced don’t exist. Part of him doesn’t want to keep going anyways.
But…..he will. Because he doesn’t know how to stop.
“What time is it?” Smalls asks after a while.
Wilfred pauses a moment, then sighs, “I don’t have the foggiest clue. My best guess is somewhere in-between one and two in the morning.”
Smalls nods. Then hears a distinct, sudden boom.

First chapter has been posted for my Green Ember fanfic, "Hopeful Still"
Here be the Ao3 synopsis:
Weezie lives a comfortable life with her mother and twin sister- well, as comfortable a life as one can live in a city enslaved by the tyrannical Morbin Blackhawk. The rabbits are told as long as the follow the rules of the Governor, they will be let alone to live their lives. Airen, Layra, and Weezie are careful to do just that, but their haven of happiness is destroyed when without prompting or reason, Captain Daggler invades the family farm and takes Weezie captive with the intent of brutal murder, leaving her mother and sister alive.
With the help of a wounded soldier, Weezie succeeds in breaking out of prison, fleeing to the slave camps far up north to escape the evil Daggler's reach.
Every step of her journey she meets new trials to test her bravery and strength as everything she holds to is taken away by Morbin and his minions bit by bit until she is left with nothing but an unquenchable hope that she strives to share with everyone she meets. Through it all she clings to the hope of a Mending to the hurts, a seed to rise from the ashes and bring light and life back to the world. Every night, no matter how dark, has a dawn.
No matter how far the darkness beats her down, she will be hopeful still.
Here's a link to the fic if you'd like to read it!

Helmer, feeling guilty, expressed the desire to be exiled despite this, Smalls honored him with a salute and Blackstar's oath. Helmer attacks a raptor dummy for practice.įortunately, Helmer was saved due to the intervention of Wilfred, Smalls, and Lord Rake, though the latter rebuked him for his actions. After warming up and terrifying a young mother whose child wandered too close to his tree, Helmer began a dangerous training exercise that nearly resulted in his death several times. Picket was immediately impressed by Helmer, and looked for him again the next morning Helmer was not in the Savory Den, but was seen later during Emma's tour of Cloud Mountain. Wilfred also saw Helmer and recognized him, and voiced his surprise at Helmer’s presence to Lord Rake. Both Heather and Picket noticed him, sitting alone and expressing disdain when another rabbit asked to join him. Helmer was present in the Savory Den when Wilfred Longtreader's party arrived following their escape from Nick Hollow. Though he worked hard, he shunned the company of the other inhabitants and came to be regarded by many as a plague. Eventually he made his way to Cloud Mountain, where only a handful of individuals knew the truth about him, with most believing him to be a former knight of King Jupiter's. Coming to see the forthcoming war against Morbin Blackhawk and his allies as fruitless, he became bitter and antisocial, convinced that there was no hope for the Cause. At that point, Helmer's aim became clear: to avenge himself, his bucks, and his king on the traitor rabbit and his vile masters.įollowing the murder of King Jupiter, Helmer was separated from his family and closest friends. This was doubtless Garten's intent, as the motto of the King's Arm had been a willingness to sacrifice one's arm and one's all. Despite the wisdom of not selling his life uselessly, Helmer came to feel he had betrayed the king. He chose not to do so, recognizing that he would only die in a futile effort he later escaped, but was left with a scar. Left with his sword, Helmer had the option to remove his arm and go to the aid of his king. Garten then had Helmer chained to a tree near the Crossing by his right arm, where he could watch the betrayal and death of King Jupiter. Recognizing the deception, Helmer led his troops back, only to be ambushed by Garten's forces, who killed Helmer's beloved soldiers. Helmer came to command the elite King's Arm unit, a group of young bucks whom he loved like sons.Įventually, Helmer came to suspect that Garten Longtreader was plotting treachery, and Garten attempted to prevent his interference by sending his unit on a pointless assignment. Eventually, Helmer became a Lord Captain of the King's Army under King Jupiter, whom he deeply admired. Other comrades of Helmer’s youth included Frye and Wilfred Longtreader. Despite this, Hewson chose not to participate in a prank that Helmer and Airen pulled against a group of naval officers. Helmer and Hewson eventually became friends after fighting alongside each other, with Helmer saving Hewson from an enemy wolf. Helmer developed a heated antagonism with Hewson due to their differing social standing. His career survived the incident, though Airen was furious with the pair for not including her. At one point, he did jeopardize his standing by swimming to Forbidden Island with Snoden. Unfortunately for Helmer, he proved as natural a soldier as his namesake Brindle Cove had been a sailor, and there was always more fighting to be done. Helmer later joined the army, though he hoped that he would be able to return home and take up the family occupation of farming. As they grew these activities would grow to include Snoden, who later married Airen. Brother and sister enjoyed an antagonistic friendship, with Airen often goading Helmer into various actions besides their rambles in the Great Wood. Helmer, and likely Airen, was cared for by an aged nurse. Helmer and his sister Airen were born in First Warren, and lived in their family home built by their great-grandfather.

We're through the end of Chapter 46, Prince Naylen is EXCELLENT, and I am very curious about a certain ancient rabbit. Oh, and everyone is in pain and probably about to die at any moment. Y'know. Just a normal day.
Fair warning for anyone who's been reading this not having read the books: I literally cannot talk about this section without talking about a significant spoiler, so . . . be aware.
OK BUT PRINCE NAYLEN'S REVERSE CARD MOVE. I knew I liked him. I knew it! He is OFFICIALLY on my favorites list.
Tameth Seer: "We must take vengeance on those responsible for the death of the prince!"
Prince Naylen: "I agree completely. Prepare to die."
(Also, I had a suspicion that whatever Jo was up to involved the Terralains. I am IMMENSELY happy to have been proved right.)
Emma's speech was, obviously, magnificent. But what I think I love more is the imagery later of her on the battlefield, her white gown stained red, not from the blood she's spilled, but from the blood she's walked in to try to save those she can.
Kylen and Jo's banter is the best.
"What do you say we express our profound regrets about it later, Kylen?"
"Let's go back to Your Highness."
And then, when they get back to Emma — "Get up, Kylen. We have work to do. Together."
I love it.
And while I'm quoting excellent lines: "It's 'my place beside you', not 'my place blocking your view'" is magnificent.
Ok, but when do I get an explanation of Pilgrim? Is he someone we thought was dead, not dead? Is he a figure of legend, not as gone as everyone thought? Is he just a random really cool buck who Lady Glen happened to meet after she fled? Why does he have Special Arrows? His fitness despite his age could be explained if he's had access to a good supply of True Blue, but — who is he????
Also Jo's battle with the Preylord and the Preylord's second was MAGNIFICENT even if I had a really hard time tracking the action.
Helmer's backstory. :'( :'( :'(
Also Helmer and Picket accepting each other when each couldn't accept themselves. Oh my goodness. My heart. :'( <3 :'(
My current prediction is that Smalls and Heather will somehow reappear when all hope is lost, just in time for Smalls to fight Morbin Blackhawk. I don't know how they're going to do it. But I have confidence that they will.

Ember's End! I am terrified that Helmer's going to die in this one, y'all. So far, the narrative seems to have been sacrificing citadel lords (and, in some respects, the Longtreader parents) to keep him and Maggie alive, but we're running out of citadel lords at this point.
Anyway. I'm up through Chapter 9; here's some thoughts.
I am inordinately happy about getting new POVs in the actual novels.
"We must bury the threat and the best weapon against it together." I assume this is talking about Lander's Tomb. (Is it Lander's Tomb because he lies there? Or because it's the tomb Lander built?) We already have a rumor that Flint's blade is hidden there, but what's the "threat"? The dragons are my best guess, but it could be something else we haven't encountered — a more long-lived danger.
Poor Picket. He is not in great shape. I do appreciate, though, that he isn't just shrugging off his injuries like in some fantasy books.
Where are my Heather chapters?????
Getting through to Kylen doesn't seem to have worked. But maybe Naylen?
I'm debating what to think about Naylen. I want him to truly just want to support his brother, that he wants his brother to be well. But does he mean it when he says as much? Or is he saying it because that's what he's supposed to say?
And given that last turn of events, I am genuinely concerned there are still spies among the ranks of the heroes. (It's not unlikely! Which is not great.)

Ember’s End by S.D. Smith, or as you could arguably call it, given what Smalls and Picket pull off during the finale, Blackhawk Down.
