Caitríona Balfe Reveals How Much the 'Outlander' Cast Know About the Series Finale
As Caitríona Balfe wraps up filming on the long-running series Outlander, she opened up to Collider’s Steve Weintraub at the Toronto International Film Festival about her feelings on the emotional end of the beloved show. Balfe, who has played Claire Fraser for over a decade, shared the whirlwind of emotions she’s experiencing as the series nears its conclusion.
Reflecting on the journey, Balfe said, "It's wild. It's wild coming to the end. I feel every emotion possible sometimes all at the same time. We had our 100th episode the other day. We had a big moment for that. It's been amazing."
After 11 years of playing the iconic time-traveling character, it’s no surprise that saying goodbye to Outlander is bittersweet for Balfe. The show has been a massive part of her career and life, but she is also eager for the next chapter. "The show has given me so much and it's going to be really sad to say goodbye to it, but it's also kind of exciting to move on to the next stage," she shared.
While fans are anxious to know how Outlander will wrap up, Balfe revealed that even the cast has been kept in the dark about certain aspects of the final script.
The last script, I don't think any of us have read the full script. I think they're still keeping parts of it to themselves until the very day that we film it. It's kind of interesting, I can't give any spoilers because I don't know.
Balfe’s reflections on Outlander came as part of a conversation about her latest project, The Cut, which also stars Orlando Bloom. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, is already creating buzz, showcasing Balfe’s continued rise in the world of cinema. But as she moves forward, it’s clear that Outlander has left a lasting imprint on her both professionally and personally.
As Outlander enters its final phase, Balfe’s portrayal of Claire Fraser will remain an indelible part of the show’s legacy. Her emotional farewell to the series marks the end of an era, but for Balfe, it’s also the start of a new adventure. Outlander Season 7 Part 2 will premiere in November 2024, with fans eagerly awaiting how the story of Claire and Jamie Fraser will conclude in Season 8. For those looking to catch up, the first seven seasons are currently available to stream on Starz.

Remember… Outlander: During the reign of the Vikings, Kainan, a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry. — IMDb I feel every emotion possible sometimes all at the same time. In the year of Four Kings, Rothgar and Wulfric were laid to rest. Heroes in the war against the Moorwens. And Kainan, once a stranger to us… became king. He took for himself a wife… and a boy, who became as his own son. But only I knew his secret. That the gods had sent us Kainan. And when it came time to return to them… he chose to stay with us instead.

Review "Outlander"
Tumblr media
I watched "Outlander" a 2008 movie directed by Howard McCain. It is in no way related to the series about time travel reomance and the Scots of the same name. It stars Jim Caviezel as Kainan (the alien), Sophia Myles as Freya, Jack Huston as Wulfric, John Hurt as Rolhgar, and numerous others. From an IMDb summary, "In 709 A.D., in the Iron Age, a spacecraft crashes in the Viking kingdom of Herot, Norway, and the pilot Kainan (Jim Caviezel) survives. He turns the beacon on; learns the language and culture of the planet using a machine; and finds that the predator, Moorwen, that he was transporting, had escaped. While chasing the alien monster, he finds a village completely destroyed and is arrested by the warrior Wulfric (Jack Huston), believing that he killed the locals. Kainan is brought to Herot as a prisoner." and "Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry."
Tumblr media
I don't think this will ever be considered a classic film. it seems to be a mashup of several genres and themes coming from various films of science fiction, monster, aliens and humans, vikings, etc. I thought it had decent special effects and certainly lots of actions and tension. It had a moderately good monster and interesting interactions between various and sundry characters in the films. It was a fun movie that held my attention and had some great setting scenery and cinematography. It is certainly an escapist film and has action, love interests, monsters, and a little bit more. The plot isn't really that intricate and the actual character development is fairly generic and minimal. But, as noted in the Empire review by Kim Newman , "A film version of fish and chips humble, honest fare thats ludicrous, inventive, gory within limits, and has a cast having so much fun its hard not to be swept along with them. And besides, you cant have nouvelle cuisine every night of the week."
Overall it received mid to bad reviews with general ratings in the 2 to 3 range out of 5.

Note
another overused creature design is the front-heavy gorilla-like bodyplan, such as Leatherback from Pacific Rim, Titanus Behemoth from the Monsterverse, the Moorwen from Outlander, the Tao Tei guards from The Great Wall, the vantablack aliens from Attack the Block and Sammael from Hellboy, to name a few
I don’t know if a gorilla body plan is exactly overused per say and I think context is important too, and some of those don’t fit that bill perfectly.
Lethearback is getting the short end of the stick here since he’s still cool and unique looking and his body plan helps distinguish him from all the other kaiju in the movie.
Behemoth is also distinct enough too but we also barely see anything of him either so I don’t know if it’s right to judge.
Moorwen counts though because it’s design is a little tacky and doesn’t flow well together.
We barely see anything of the Tao tei guards so it might not be right to judge, but the grunts and queen look better.
The vantablack aliens are cool scuzzy little gremblos and very memorable.
I don’t know anything about hellboy.
I also think it’s important to say that the features I’ve attributed to the “generic modern movie monster” doesn’t automatically make something a bad creature design. A creature design can have these features and be good. What really matters is how well someone makes these features “flow” and “mesh” together to make a distinct and memorable creature design.

The Predator Film You Never Knew Existed
Tumblr media
Yeah, fuck that lame fucking TV series. I’ll take vikings fighting an alien over bad narration and sexy Scotsmen any day.
So yeah, this is a little-known film starring Jesus Christ himself, James Caviezel, as a humanoid alien on the hunt for an escaped monster that killed the crew of his ship and stranded him on Earth in the land of vikings. (Aaaahhhhaaaaaaa AAAAAHHHHHH Aaaaaahhhaaaaaaaaa AAAAAHHHH)
And yeah, it’s basically Predator vs Vikings, except they couldn’t have it be a Predator for obvious reasons. Instead, we get a giant alien that also happens to have glowing green blood. And it’s actually a pretty solid film with a very damn good cast.
Tumblr media
As mentioned before, James Caviezel stars as Kainan, who is a human alien stranded on Earth after his space ship crashes in a lake in Scandinavia. The cause of this was another alien creature called a “moorwen” which is basically a huge fucking lizard with bioluminescent properties and a very mean temper. Kainan takes it upon himself to hunt down the creature and ends up running into a village of vikings.
The rest of the cast is absolutely stellar. You have the late John Hurt as the leader of the vikings, Sophia Miles (probably best known for her work in the Underworld films) as his daughter, and Ron Perlman as a rival clan leader. As well as some great performances from some lesser known actors, most notably Cliff Saunders as Boromir a drunkard viking who ends up being the heart of the film.
Tumblr media
The plot is pretty straightforward. Kainan’s attempts to kill the moorwen but ends up getting captured by the vikings, who assume he’s a spy from Ron Perlman’s camp. He tries to explain to them as best he can who he is and what he’s doing. Claiming to be a dragon hunter from the north.
It’s actually rather clever how they explain Kainan’s origins and how he’s human despite being an alien. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment where Kainan uses his portable computer to determine his location in the cosmos. The computer offhandedly mentions that he’s on Earth, a planet his people attempted to seed with life, but eventually abandoned.
So it very much hints at a “Chariots of The Gods” type origin for mankind, but doesn’t dwell on it. It also helps explain how Kainan is able to speak ancient Norse (which is treated as English in the film), as the computer downloads it into his brain. The assumption being that someone kept tabs on the humans who remained to see how they developed. To be honest, I feel this explanation feels rather redundant, but the fact the film takes the time to explain why Kainan is human and how he can understand Norse is a nice touch.
Tumblr media
With that out of the way we can get straight into the action. Soon the vikings soon realize that the moorwen is real and work with Kainan to take the creature down. Meanwhile, Kainan begins to bond with the vikings and we get some great moments such as the shields game which is just fun to watch.
As the title of this article suggests, I can’t help but feel like this movie was meant to be Predator film, a lot of the elements are there, with a few tweaks it could make for a solid Predator movie. Even as it stands it’s a pretty solid action/horror film. While it does hit on some cliches here and there the fact of the matter is that the film succeeds where it needs to succeed.
The monster effects were done by Patrick Tatopoulos, who is probably best known for his work on the 98 American Godzilla film. The creature certainly does look like zilla.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still, it does present a credible threat, while also being oddly sympathetic as we learn more about Kainan’s relationship to it.
At the end of the day, Outlander is a solid monster movie with a fantastic setting and some surprisingly good acting. I’m actually surprised the film doesn’t have a larger cult following. If you ever get the chance to watch it, do. You won’t be disappointed.

The Moorwen from "Outlander (2008)" probably fits right in with your list of "tropey monster designs" though the bioluminescence does make it distinct
I wouldn’t say they don’t fit right in exactly since their front end is pretty robustly built, they’re knuckle walkers, and they have a fairly normal mouth (that does need a better set of lips). They definitely feel like they fit in aesthetically though.
For some reason they don’t look very natural to me and I think “making a monster” took priority over “making a natural looking alien that fits with its environment”, which is another pet peeve of mine.
