As many of you know, my blog(s) have a years long tradition of closely following the annual Atlantic Hurricane Season. I've slacked off in the last couple years but expect a return to day by day updates as I will be on a Caribbean island for the coming months. This hurricane season promises to be one of our craziest yet- it's barely July and the Atlantic has already yielded two storms, one of which (Hurricane Beryl) has already reached Category 5. All-time record sea surface temperatures, the latest El Niño Southern Oscillation, one of the hottest and strongest we've ever seen, weakening to a neutral phase, leaving extremely hot seas in the Main Development Area of the Atlantic Ocean. With the ENSO further shifting into La Niña, which has a stabilizing effect on the Atlantic atmosphere, neutralizing the wind shear generated by El Niño that impedes cyclone formation, we're looking at a vastly above average hurricane season. The average expected Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) for an Atlantic Hurricane Season is between 72 and 111 units, but this year estimates for total ACE put the season above 200 points in almost all estimates by various sources, with all predicting more named storms than the average 14. Some estimates are unprecedented: up to 33±6 named storms, with an overwhelming majority of forecasters expecting more than 5 major hurricanes this season. As trade winds continue to shift, and the monsoon trough deepens over western Africa in preparation for the rainy season, only time will tell how bad the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season will be, but it does not bode well. I will be watching the Inter-Tropical Convegence Zone closely. With that, it's my honor and privilege to introduce our coverage of the Atlantic Hurricane Season of the year 2024!

2024 Hurricane Season Breaks an Unusual Record, Thanks to Hot Water
The 2024 hurricane season has already made history, setting an unprecedented record that highlights the stark contrast between Atlantic and Pacific storm activity. For the first time since satellite monitoring began in 1966, the Atlantic basin has generated more accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) than the entire Pacific Ocean through early July. This unusual phenomenon is largely attributed to the exceptionally warm water temperatures across much of the North Atlantic. Phil Klotzbach, a senior research scientist at Colorado State University, explains that these abnormally high ocean temperatures are influencing storm activity in both oceans, albeit in opposite ways. In the Atlantic, the warm waters have fueled an active start to the hurricane season. The region has already experienced several named storms, including the powerful Hurricane Beryl in early July. This early season activity has contributed to the record-breaking ACE levels, which measure the total energy of a hurricane season based on storm frequency and maximum wind speeds.
Conversely, the Pacific has seen an unusually quiet start to its tropical cyclone season. The western North Pacific experienced only one typhoon in May, and for only the second time on record since 1950, it went without a named storm from June 1 to July 15. In the eastern North Pacific, Tropical Storm Aletta's formation on July 4 marked the latest start to the season on record in that region. Scientists attribute this lack of Pacific storm activity to several factors, including the absence of a strong monsoon trough in the western North Pacific and excessive easterly wind shear in the eastern North Pacific. Interestingly, the warm Atlantic waters are contributing to these conditions by influencing global wind patterns. The dramatic spike in tropical Atlantic water temperatures from March to June 2024 has persisted, creating a La Niña-like circulation pattern. This pattern reduces westerly wind shear in the Atlantic, making conditions more favorable for storm formation. However, it increases easterly winds in the eastern North Pacific, hindering tropical storm development in that region. While it's still early in the hurricane season, forecasters predict above-normal activity for the Atlantic basin. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts 17 to 25 named storms, including 8 to 13 hurricanes, of which 4 to 7 could become major hurricanes.
As the season progresses, researchers will continue to study the influence of climate change and other factors on tropical cyclone patterns. The unusual start to the 2024 season serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between oceanic and atmospheric conditions in shaping hurricane activity across different regions.

Electric Skies in the Afternoon, Nearby Rain Not Being Reported
Oct. 5, 2024
The sky over our house filled with OR clouds throughout the day, as monsoonal conditions continue late in the season. We had a few drops of OR splatter, which happens on the edges of rain systems. It looked like it was raining due north of us.
Although the weather forecasts said nothing about rain, exaggerated the temperatures because of the humidity, and hid all activity on the radar, the National Weather Service Hanford radar showed nearby rain in Kern County mountains and in the Sierras this afternoon. Although all their weather graphics today were about extreme heat (it is actually very humid and not that hot), for some reason they had a warning about fast moving water.
This is about safety during a flash flood. This tells me there was heavy rain in areas of southern and central California, and the sky today told me the same thing.

India’s retail inflation eased to 5.48% in November, down from 6.21% in October, marking a significant reduction after reaching a 14-month high. The decline was primarily driven by cooling food prices, with food inflation moderating to 9% in November compared to 10.9% in the previous month. Vegetable inflation, a key contributor to elevated consumer prices, dropped sharply from 42% in October to 29% in November. Excluding vegetables, overall inflation stood at 3.9%, comfortably below the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) lower threshold of 4%.
Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist at CareEdge, noted, “The moderation in vegetable prices played a crucial role in bringing down the inflation rate. The November data aligns with the projected 5.5% median forecast from various analysts.” Despite this decline, inflation remains above 5% for the third consecutive month, presenting challenges for the RBI as it navigates monetary policy decisions.
Policy Challenges Ahead
The persistent inflationary pressures pose a dilemma for the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which maintained the policy rate unchanged for the 11th consecutive time during its December meeting. Experts predict inflation will remain above 5% in December, complicating decisions on interest rates in February 2025.
Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist at Bank of Baroda, commented, “With India’s retail inflation expected around 5.4% in December, the central bank will face a tough call on rates in February. However, a higher base effect from categories like pulses, fruits, and spices may aid in further cooling inflation in early 2025.”
Paras Jasrai, Senior Analyst at India Ratings and Research, added that core inflation was largely stable at 3.6% in November. He emphasized that demand conditions are unlikely to change significantly through December, indicating a steady trajectory for core inflation in the near term.
The RBI has already revised its annual inflation forecast upward from 4.5% to 4.8% following October’s higher-than-expected reading. However, analysts remain optimistic about inflation easing further in 2025.
Food Prices and Future Trends
Despite overall improvements, certain food categories continued to exhibit high inflation rates in November. Potatoes recorded a staggering 66.6% inflation, up from 64.9% in October, while garlic inflation remained over 80%. Carrots and pulses also saw double-digit inflation, highlighting the uneven nature of price moderation.
The personal care and effects category, influenced by rising gold and silver prices, contributed to core inflation staying elevated in November. Experts suggest that favorable monsoon conditions and improved agricultural output could further stabilize food prices, supporting the RBI’s inflation management efforts.
Looking ahead, the Asian Development Bank forecasts consumer inflation to decline to 4.3% by FY26, down from its earlier projection of 4.5%. If headline inflation falls to 5% or lower by December 2024, economists anticipate the MPC may consider rate cuts in early 2025. Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist at ICRA, stated, “We expect two rate cuts of 25 basis points each in the upcoming easing cycle, contingent on continued moderation in inflation.”
As food prices stabilize and India’s retail inflation shows signs of further cooling, policymakers and consumers alike remain hopeful for sustained economic relief in the months ahead.

India Eyeliner Market Demand, Growth, Report 2023-2030
BlueWeave Consulting, a leading strategic consulting and market research firm, in its recent study, estimated India Eyeliner Market size at USD 345.40 million in 2023. During the forecast period between 2024 and 2030, BlueWeave expects India Eyeliner Market size to expand at a CAGR of 2.70% reaching a value of USD 407.73 million by 2030. The increasing adoption of cosmetics by males and the strong emphasis on eye makeup as a daily grooming practice, especially among female customers, are significant growth factors of India eyeliner market. The growing availability of various goods through online sales platforms and the introduction of new products, such waterproof and smudge-proof eyeliners, are also expected to propel the growth of the eyeliner market in India.

Opportunity – Growing Popularity of Beauty Stores and Parlors
Beauty stores hold the largest share of India Eyeliner Market by distribution channel. These stores offer a wide range of products from different brands under one roof, as well as personal assistance in choosing the product according to the requirement and budget. However, the online retail segment is estimated to register a high CAGR during the forecast period. The growth of the segment is mainly attributed to the growing popularity of online platforms, such as Nykaa, Amazon.in, and Flipkart.
Impact of Escalating Geopolitical Tensions on India Eyeliner Market
Escalating geopolitical tensions impacts India Eyeliner Market in several ways. These disputes and tensions immediately cause supply chain disruptions, which impact raw material availability and raise product prices or cause shortages in the market. Furthermore, because of the uncertain economy, geopolitical conflicts also affect consumers' purchasing ability. Customers may decide to spend less on discretionary items like eyeliners as a result of this. Geopolitical concerns may also influence the sales of foreign companies by encouraging people to favor domestic brands.
Waterproof Formulation Segment to Grow at Fastest CAGR
The waterproof formulation accounts for the highest market share of India Eyeline Market by formulation, owing to the hot and humid climate of India which leads to sweating in makeup users. Waterproof eyeliner prevents smudging and fading in both summer and monsoon seasons and is long-lasting, which attracts users and drives its market growth. However, the natural/organic is projected to witness a high growth rate during the forecast period. These formulations are made of organic ingredients and are free from iron oxides and mica.
South India Leads India Eyeliner Market
South India dominates India eyeliner market owing to its diverse consumer base and high purchasing power of consumers. However, North India is projected to grow at a high CAGR during the forecast period. The increasing population and rapid urbanization directly contribute to the growing demand for cosmetics, including eyeliner, in the region. Furthermore, the growing influence of social media platforms, such as Instagram and YouTube, is also promoting the use of cosmetic products.
Competitive Landscape
India Eyeliner Market is intensely competitive, as a number of companies are competing to gain a significant market share. Key players in the market include Amway India, L'Oréal Group, Avon Products, Lakme, Revlon Inc., Unilever PLC, Lotus Herbal, Swiss Beauty, A.G. Industries, and Kwality Color Cosmetics.
To further enhance their market share, these companies employ various strategies, including mergers and acquisitions, partnerships, joint ventures, license agreements, and new product launches.
