One of the things that came up in this episode of the Mondsteinflug miniseries on Sailor Moon fandom history was why people in North America weren’t as interested in the Cloverway S and SuperS dubs. 

Some of the things we talked about on the podcast as potential reasons for this were:

1. Greater accessibility of subbed content

2. Growth/lost interest (a 2 year gap can be a long time in adolescence)

@beej88 brought up that it might be because they changed Serena’s voice actress (from Terri Hawkes to Linda Ballantyne). 

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this, and also on why there was so much less Usamamo fic set around S and SuperS at the time.

I’m looking for testimonials for the Sailor Moon Across Cultures topic!

So I’m in charge of the research for the topic “sailor moon across cultures” for our mini series about sailor moon fandom history in @mesomondstein ‘s Sailor Moon podcast Mondsteinflug. 

And so, I would love to have your opinions on some topics if you come from a culture not already discussed in the podcast before (So, cultures other than North America and Germany)!

(And don’t you worry, those who already gave @tinacentury your testimonials! I have access to them and they will be going into this too, so please don’t feel you have to repeat yourselves!)

Specifically I’m looking for info on these topics:

🌙 Where there cultural differences you perceived from how and when Sailor Moon was received and released in your country? How was Sailor Moon “seen”? How popular was it? How did these things change over time?

In particular I’m interested here in what the fans were doing, how they were liking it, what they thought of it, what messages they were valuing in it, how popular it was and how that showed?

🌙 What was the fanbase in your country like? How did it change?

🌙 Which characters, ships and seasons were most popular? Did it change over time?

🌙 What did Sailor Moon's themes mean to you in relation to your country?

I’m for instance interest in how you think it related to your cultural values. Was it seen as more tame or scandalous, was it heavily censored to adjust to norms or not, things like that - and how did its perhaps a bit altered messages relate to you? (I.e. think perhaps about how in Germany for instance the Starlights became trans icons that could have become personally meaningful, whereas they could not be that in countries where the Starlights weren’t shown and the culture not comfortable with these themes)

🌙 And last but not least, is there an active fanbase creating fanfiction and fanwork of any kind in your language?

🌙 And if yes, what have common themes of these fanworks been over the years?

Hi Nari! I heard the podcast today where you and Flora were guests and I loved it! I don't have a Tumblr account but I wanted to say how much I appreciate the insight about smut fanfiction especially in Japan! I feel it's so difficult to find fanfiction (especially smutty fanfiction) in Japanese! I like to read things in different languages with an online translator, but it's so hard to find the ones in Japanese! Do you have tips on where to find it better?

Hi Anon! I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the @mondsteinflug smut episode! Japanese smutty fanfictions are hard to find yes, it's often hidden deep into someone's individual website under passwords and secret links etc.

One thing you can do is to go to Pixiv and search ship name in Japanese along with the "R-18" tag. So if you're looking for Usamamo, "まもうさ" and "R-18" and so on. I DO NOT recommend searching "Sailor Moon(セーラームーン)" blanket tag with "R-18" because you would most likely get highly graphic hentai content. Same goes with character names too. So it's safe to stick with ship names if you want to avoid hentai stuff. Not many but some authors have links to their individual website on their profile, and there you can find more content and if you're lucky link to other websites even!

Nickname: My name is Vanessa and most people call me Vani. On the internet I’m called Cat, but I also had several other nicknames. I use the alias Sailor Cat, because one day I wondered what my Sailor Senshi name would be. I love cats so much, so I soon found the name “Sailor Cat”.

Star Sign: I’m a Gemini, like Taiki. So my planet is Mercury, which is great, cause Sailor Mercury is my favourite Senshi!^^

Height: 1,52 m (I don’t know it in feet)

Last film I saw: I think it was Princess Mononoke. I love Studio Ghibli and Mononoke is one of their best films! So I decided to watch it once more on DVD. I don’t watch many movies at the moment, I mostly watch YouTube. But I want to change this and watch more anime.

Favorite musician: I don’t really have one, since I care about the songs and not that mich about the band/singer. But here’s some singers/ bands I really like:

-BRADIO: A Japanese band which you might know from the intro of Death Parade. They make very “funky” songs that makes you feel happy and wanna dance.

-ANZA: My hero! I love her so much, she’s my favourite Sailor Moon! And her singing is so gorgeous! But I don’t know that many songs by her.

-Other Japanese bands: Kalafina, One ok Rock, Babymetal, Snuper (okay, they’re Korean)

-German folk rock bands such as Saltatio Mortis, Faun or Santiano.

-Vocaloid & anime songs in general

Song Stuck In My Head: It switches between “Sky of Jewels” from Le Mouvement Final and “You look like a girl” from boyinaband. xD

Do I Get Asks: Never, my blog is really unknown. xD But I don’t post stuff really often and when I do it’s just reposts.

What I’m Wearing: A simple blue jeans, a shirt with a dog on it (white, gray & blue) and a blue jacket. Nothing special, but I hardly ever wear “fancy” clothes. xD

Dream job: To be an author. I don’t know if it’ll ever work, but I want to publish at least one book someday!

Dream Trip: Japan! I don’t wanna life there for years, but I definitely want to visit it. I also want to go to Disneyland. xD

Play any instruments: No. I tried keyboard once, but I can’t play it. But I sing a lot.

Languages: My mother tongue is German. (I also speak a funny German dialect calles Bavarian xD But of course also standard German). I’ve been learning English for over 10 years now. (Okay, we started in elementary school and we didn’t learn so much there.) I also had French class in school for 7 years, but it’s way more difficult for me than English. I think it’s because I hear English all the time. (Music, English youtubers...) I also started to learn Japanese on my own. I know the basics and I have Japanese class at university since this year.^^

I started watching Sailor Moon because I randomly found a music video of a German Sailor Moon song. I would listen to these songs everyday before I had even watched a single episide xD

I’m asexual, so I don’t expierience sexual attraction towards any gender.

My favourite Sailor Moon season is S and my favourite Sera Myu is Eien Densetsu. I love all of the Sailor Moon versions the same.^^

I run a German youtube channel about Sailor Moon.

My favourite Pokémon is Absol.

Hello fellow Earthlings, dear listeners! 

Let’s have an update about the podcast: While I’m still struggling with health issues, I have my editor back! Rusty’s workload has slowed a bit, so he’s editing his way through the backlog of episodes. Podcasting will slowly but certainly continue!

Shitty health, or: when the only constant in your life is that you have shitty health. New episodes postponed again, sorry to the people who were looking forward to record or listen. 

I can at least point you to our nice big backlog of many fun hours of podcasting, hope you find something you like to discover or rediscover until we can get going again. We’re on episode 73 now. That’s a lot. Makes me really want to reach 100, so fingers crossed that autumn will get us closer to that!
