Hiroshima 2024/09/09-13
Day 4 Miyajima Day 2 (2)
Going back I went through the shopping street, Omotesendou :D It has a lot of streetfood (and even the gacha corner is deer themed ^^). Hiroshima is famous for the setouchi lemon, so you can get everything in lemon flavor! And unfortunately I love that... As easy as it is for me to skip all the matcha, I'm weak to lemon-flavored stuff ^^;;; I skipped the fried momiji manju, though... Oily deep fry in 35°C is just no...
Then high tide arrived and it was great. the seabed fully flooded, the lower stairs too, and more of the shrine too. You can compare images about the back of the shrine, it is not fully flooded though. Too bad it got cloudy, but this is also another face of Miyajima to experience. If I waited 30 more minutes, the sun returned, but I was just too tired already. I also didn't experience sunset there, but I need to leave some things for next time :D Nature is amazing, and I want to see many other faces of Miyajima in future.
I used the JR ferry to go back, but it's really no different from the other one. The evening was spent buying all the lemon flavored omiyage for myself at the station orz Btw, Hiroshima is famous for the streetcar, so I used that in the morning to get to the boat, but I do not recommend. Much slower than the bus running the same route.

Day 5 Hiroshima
Sticking the last day here, since not much happened. I went back to the hill above the station to visit more shrines, but there are still much more to conquer the next time. Tsuruhane Shrine has many wind chimes (and crane figures). Myoujouin Temple has a gorgeous garden, and at the temple you are free to go back to look at statues and hanging scrolls. No photos, because I did not think it was appropriate ^^; Interestingly, it has a ginkgo tree that survived the atomic bombing - now it has a Buddha head carved inside, and the tree is still alive! The last stop was Nigitsu shrine, also with torii with "legs". I had lunch in the shopping district (there is a vegetarian Chinese place, this was my second time and I will be back for more), and said goodbye to Hiroshima in the late afternoon. I will definitely back, I guess you have to go during momiji time, although no idea how I can make it fit with work...
(Next longer planned trip is Nagasaki during the Chinese lantern festival *__*)

Tuesday 21st May - Day 15
This morning we headed for the beautiful wooded island of Miyajima which is famous for its giant torii gate, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Itsukushima Shrine. We took a coach for about 40minutes from Hiroshima and then joined the ferry, as foot passengers for the 10 minute crossing. The island has many sika deer wandering the streets, they are very used to the visitors and are quite tame, feeding them is not allowed, however this does not stop them from trying their luck at snatching bags or snacks that unwary visitors are not keeping an eye on! The area is famous for its oysters and walking down the Main Street every other stall is selling oysters in some form or another. It also sells maple leaf shaped cakes (momiji manju) made from sweet bean paste, which have a variety of fillings from cheese to chocolate, many shops also sell these specialities.
We walked as a group to the shrine, it is on the edge of the inland sea making it a very picturesque location with the mountains in the background. The shrine is dedicated to three goddesses; goddess of the sea, goddess of traffic safety and goddess of good fortune and fulfilment of wishes. First built in 593, it was remodelled in 1168. The vermillion colour of the shrine and the torii gate is considered to keep evil spirits away. The corridors in the shrine total 260m as they pass by the main shrine, the stage, the music rooms etc. the torii gate weighs 60 tons and stands 16.5m high, the roof is made of thatched cypress bark. The present gate is the 9th since the first was built in 1875.
After the visit we had a couple of hours of free time, some of the group joined Kas to see the Daishoin Temple, however, we decided to head back to the town, stopping off for a refreshing drink of local lemon soda. We wandered the stalls and picked up a few gifts and searched for a restaurant that was serving oyster burgers, as Mike had set his heart on trying one … we found a small place close to the ferry terminal Mike got his burger and I had a delicious vegetable tempura dish. We had been fortunate in that the morning had been relatively quiet but as we left more and more coach loads arrived. We headed back to the hotel.
Mike decided to have a nap whilst I went back to the Peace Park, which was just a few minute walk from our hotel, as I wanted to capture some more photos. We had been recommended to visit the Shukkeien Gardens, about a twenty minute walk from the hotel, we were pleased that we decided to visit. The gardens, adjacent to one of the art museums was very pretty and peaceful, set in the midst of the city. Originally constructed in 1620 for the feudal lord of Hiroshima. The idea behind the garden was to collect together in miniature a series of views of Hangzhou, China. There is a large central pond, with more than 10 islets, around the edge are mountains, valleys, bridges, tea cottages and arbors with a connecting pathway joining them all. In 1945 the garden was destroyed by the bomb but the garden has been restored to its former glory. The gardens receive about 250,000 visitors each year.
The afternoon was very warm and we were both very tired so decided to have a small meal and then go back to pack up for moving on tomorrow.

When Fumiko was a human, what was her favorite food? As a demon, what is her preferred diet?
Hi, anon. Thank you for the ask!
There isn't a food that Fumiko doesn't like. She has a large appetite, and although it's hard to tell due to the style of clothing, she's on the chubby side (I draw her with tummy rolls before I add the clothing.) She has a sweet tooth, and her favorite dessert is momiji manju, a castella-esque cake fill a red bean filling.
As a demon she's primarily a scavenger and feeds off corpses she finds in the alleys of Yoshiwara. She's a weak demon so when she does need to hunt she preys on easy targets - drunks, the sick and dying, and opium addicts. She also eats whatever scraps the Shabanas give her such as girls Daki doesn't find pretty enough to eat.
(If she were around during the Yoshiwara battle in the anime, she would have totally ate Tengen's arm. Just sitting in the background munching on that thing like a corn cob.)

みみぢ饅頭味キットカット // Momiji Manju KitKats This flavor is based on a local snack from Hiroshima, a traditional Japanese cake (manju) shaped like a maple (momiji) leaf. Of course, the KitKat is just shaped like a candy bar, but the maple design on the chocolate is super cute.
At first the flavor seemed a little off, but then I figured it out! It has a strong white sesame taste that makes it... not exactly bitter, but unexpected. A tiny bit like like halva, which I like a lot and never see in Japan, so that’s cool! Plus, ¥10 (~$0.09) from each package sold goes to earthquake relief, so overall this is a good thing.

Morning tea and sweet.
The sweet is momiji manjū, a Hiroshima specialty. I ate probably hundreds of them when I lived in Hiroshima and they’re basically impossible to get in America, so when I found a snack box that had them as part of its October box, I instantly signed up. Not sure I’ll keep going, but it was worth it for this.
Pre-Meiji, Hiroshima Prefecture was called Aki Province. It’s written 安芸国, but the word for fall (秋) is also pronounced “Aki.” I always liked that.
