Episode 99: Critical Role
Emma and Winston sit down to discuss their latest and greatest obsession: Critical Role. We wax poetic about the talents of Matt Mercer and the gang's storytelling and voice acting abilities, and Emma pairs wine with the characters of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein. Featuring: wine-themed tongue twisters, Mollydooker for Mollymauk, Rogue Vine Wines, collecting dice sets, wine by Tool, Dancing Leitz, great character design, and your país should you choose to accept it.

Mollydooker Wines McLaren Vale South Australia
Recently I had the opportunity to visit Mollydooker Wines Cellar Door in McLaren Vale South Australia and what a great visit it was. Whilst not all of the wines were great the way that our wine tasting was organised and conducted was excellent. The only thing you could ask for to improve the experience was to taste Mollydooker Wines’ Velvet Glove, which I am sure we might have gotten lucky with…

Report on New Year Online Auction & Announcing Next LIVE Auction
We kick started 2023 with our New Year’s Rare and Fine Wine Online auction which concluded last Sunday, in hope our carefully curated collection could bring you some fun to browse over the New Year’s holidays.
In this auction, we had a big focus on kiwi wines, and so did our bidders. This time the shift in interest from old world regions helped our local regions reached the highest sell-through rate across the category. 1998 Te Mata Estate Coleraine got snapped at $223.25, followed by its 2002 vintage at $176.25, and 2016 Bell Hill Pinot Noir was also sold for $176.25, 2018 Kusuda Syrah followed at $164.50.
The highest hammer win of this auction went for 2003 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Nacional at $1175, while 2002 Chateau Mouton Rothschild taking the second place at $869.50. 2001 Antinori Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 3 liter OWC, 1977 Chateau Latour and 1979 Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque Rose all sold for $587.50, great buys! Carrying on the bubbly note, 2002 Bollinger R.D Extra Brut sold for $423, while 2003 Dom Perignon achieved $352.50.
Some other highlights include 1977 Warre’s Vintage Port sold for $246.75, 2012 Mollydooker Carnival of Love achieved $223.25, 2001 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape reached $188 and Chinese spirit 2018 Moutai Laimao sold for $223.25.
Our next auction’s catalogue has already been published! We are accepting absentee bids now. It will be a LIVE/online event on Tuesday 7th February at Caro’s Wine 14 Mackelvie Street, Grey Lynn. Please note the auction will start at 6.00 pm. As usual, this will be streamed live on auctions.wineauctionroom.com.
Just want to grab few bottles of something nice on the go, for the long weekend or your next friends gathering? Check out the latest arrival to our everyday retail selection at www.wineretailroom.co.nz. Apart from our carefully curated wine selection, we also offer niche whisky, premium glassware and crystal. Our boutique selection offers items to suit all tastes, pockets and occasions.

Thanks for being the Verax's Wine Tasting Ability Internet Defense Force, Prat. I'm not a Master Sommelier, skeptical anon, although that is my goal in the long run if society keeps chugging on like this. The standard cert is much simpler than the higher rungs, and there are a fair few thousand of us in the US. My recommendation for the day for those entry-level drinkers and poorfags reading this: Mollydooker's Scooter merlot. V

Mollydooker Fun Series Launch
Last night had the pleasure of winning two VIP tickets to the Mollydooker Wine Launch! I usually never win anything so it was a jump for joy when I did.
Their launch was celebrated and announced at the Noble Gentleman on 41 Currie Street Adelaide, and a beautiful place it was, open area, with a classic vibe to it. It’s is a nice place to pop in for after work or lunching on a weekend.

Dark ruby with an abrupt edge. A nose as stifling and dry as the desert, red dust blowing, sweat dries instantly, combining with the dust into muddy rivulets of failed irrigation on your skin. A round sluggish fruit rises up in the background, obese and lumbering--someone you feel sorry for in this heat. I would love to say an herbaceous edge lurks at the bottom, but that is just tar and singed hair. Sweet and syrupy is the lingering bouquet. In the mouth, thick and plush--a tinny leathery syrup flows across fruit dessert, dry eucalyptus introducing the brash tannin where--in classic Shiraz fashion--the obnoxiously ripe fruit holds the most sway. It doesn't even let the finish-heat sway it. 2016 #MOLLYDOOKER #Shiraz 'The Boxer' #SouthAustralia 16.0 (at Mollydooker Wines) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqG2yKrggoD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1rux5vzgqhm7l

Shirvington 2010 Shiraz, McLaren Vale
https://bit.ly/3FXVvPR Shirvington 2010 Shiraz, McLaren Vale https://bit.ly/3FXVvPR Shirvington 2010 Shiraz, McLaren Vale A Winery Divorce First, there was Sparky Marquis. He was the “hit winemaker” for years in South Australia. His wines were highly coveted, especially in the states. His wines were bigger than life, bold, rich, but beautifully linear and precise as well. Things started going sideways for him in 2005, culminating with his divorce a few months ago from his wife Sarah, who now owns all their properties, including Mollydooker. Few people realized she, as much as Sparky, was responsible for that luxury-grade style of Shiraz that Mollydooker epitomized. Kim Jackson Why take that much time talking about another winery? Because the steps Sarah walked, often in the shadow of her famous husband, made way for another female maker, who is rightfully getting rockstar-level love in Australia. Her name is Kim Jackson, and this is one of her wines. Wine Reviews Burnt incense, toasted allspice, and chocolate-covered cherries bobbing in a gigantic vat of blackberry jam. Oh, and the tannins are big and round as the face of a velvet dolphin—true hallucinatory hedonism.

Trying to decide how long I should/shouldn't wait before opening a certain bottle while holding it for a special occasion.
I received as a present a couple years ago a bottle of either 2016 or 2017 Velvet Glove Shiraz by Mollydooker (I'm at work and can't recall specifically), which had been my white whale of sorts for a long time; mostly because I couldn't imagine spending that much on a single bottle of wine, but Mollydooker is my favorite vineyard by far and I've had pretty much everything else they've made.
I've been saving it on the rack for some kind of significant event to celebrate, but I'm worried I might wait *too* long and the wine end up being adversely affected to some degree, since it's already at about ~5 years. Or for all I know it might still taste the exact same or better 10+ years from now.
Advice after some searching seems to conflict, but mostly tells me that only very specific wines benefit from aging at all and the qualifications are vague, otherwise it should be consumed within 5 years or so.

New Post has been published on https://wineauctionroom.com/report-on-april-may-auctions-and-announcing-the-date-of-june-auction/
Report on April & May Auctions and Announcing The Date of June Auction
It’s evident that isolation does not stem our desire for outstanding wines. Our April and May auctions both featured amazing collections of rare and fine wine and made some inspiring new records. We had a staggering 97% sell-through rate in April Live Auction and welcomed a total of 280 registered bidders. It was great to see the bidders’ passion reach some record highs.
In April, the strongly contested 2006 and 2012 Penfolds Garage Bin 95, both sold for $658. These values only slightly pipped the 1997 Chateau Mouton Rothschild which achieved $634.50, followed by 1982 Chateau Leoville Las Cases at $611. In May, we were thrilled to see the 2010 Domaine du Comte Liger Belair Aux Reignot Vosne Romanee 1er Cru sold for $1645, followed by 1988 Krug Vintage Brut at $940.
In the April Live Auction, we offered the most amount of wine from temperature-controlled cellars in one sale than we had been able to do previously. France performed excellently as usual. Leading with Rhone: 1999, 2000, and 2005 Chapoutier Le Pavillion Ermitage sold for $376, $423, and $481.75, respectively. Most of the biggest sale items in this auction came from the same temperature-controlled cellar, proving the value of well cared for wine and provenance in the minds of our bidders. 1995 and 1998 Dom both sold for $352.50, 2002 Chateau Margaux snapped at $587.50 (in May auction, 2004 Chateau Margaux reached $681.50), and 2002 Chateau Angelus sold for $411.25. Closer to home, Te Mata once again led the show with 1982 Te Mata Coleraine reaching a new high at $611.
Switching our sights to the May Online Auction, we witnessed some heated competition. Top of the order was 1998 Te Mata Coleraine (with the most views and bids) and finally sold for $305.50. Ata Rangi was the second most coveted New Zealand brand with each lot attracting at least five bidders. There was no shortage of coveted wines in this online auction with 1998 Henschke Hill Of Grace Shiraz reaching $822.50. Also from Australia, 2010 Mollydooker Carnival Of Love Shiraz sold for $160, a great buy. On a sweeter note, the half bottle 2011 Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling Selection de Grains Noble sold for $211.50, a value that is hard to beat.
Thanks once again to our incredible vendors who consigned fabulous wines for us to curate across these two auctions; a selection that our bidders clearly enjoyed. And to our bidders who proved that, even when restricted, we can pursue our hobbies and passions. As New Zealand Government restrictions ease, and as we move down to Level 2, we look forward to welcoming you into the physical saleroom once again (honouring the guidelines of social distancing of course). Our next auction will be a LIVE/online sale on Tuesday 2 June at Caro’s Wine on 14 Mackelvie Street, Grey Lynn. As usual, the auction will commence at 6.30pm and will be streamed live on auctions.wineauctionroom.com. We have got some great wines lined up for this auction and, as always, will have something special to taste that evening too.
Many thanks for your consignments and bids. We look forward to reconnecting with you all in the June Live/Online auction.
