@corrodedcoffinfest Day 11: Jeff
Word Count: 620/Rating: T/Pairing: none/CW: older Corroded Coffin, takes place in 2024, all of the guys are idiots/Tags: Jeff, Eddie Munson, Gareth, Grant, TikTok, modern!Corroded Coffin
Divider credit to @silkholland
Jeff has always been the brains of Corroded Coffin. He was the one who ensured the lighting was set before their performances at The Hideout back in high school. If an amp is faulty, he can fix it without batting an eye. Even in his middle school years, he was a proud member of the AV Club.
But this?
Jeff squints at the phone screen, trying to navigate the For You page. He’s not exactly sure who ‘you’ is, because none of these videos seem remotely interesting to him.
“What exactly am I doing here?”
“I dunno,” Eddie shrugs, scratching at the gray stubble on his cheek as he peers over Jeff’s shoulder. “Robin just said we need to make an account and to ‘connect with our younger fans.’”
Gareth has his own phone out to read off an article. “Says here that to create videos on TikTok, you press the little plus sign. Then you can add filters—”
“Filters?” Eddie’s brows furrow in confusion.
“Smooths out wrinkles, hides zits, brightens your eyes.” Jeff fills him in, still focused on the app. “Okay, now what?”
Gareth scrolls a little more. “Music. You click ‘add sound’ and then choose the song you want.”
“Ooh, how about the one that goes ‘I’m working late, ‘cuz I’m a singer’?” Grant offers, singing in an awful falsetto.
Jeff rolls his eyes. “Or we could…I dunno…use a Corroded Coffin song?” He taps the search box and types in the band’s name. “Hell and Back is our most popular on here, apparently.”
“How?” Eddie plucks the phone from Jeff’s grasp. “We haven’t even used this app before.”
“But our songs are on here,” Jeff explains, conjuring up all of his remaining patience. “And people use those with their videos.”
The other three band members nod, but Jeff’s willing to bet that none of them have any clue what’s going on. He takes the phone back from Eddie, selects the song, and turns to Gareth. “What’s next?”
“Hold down the red circle to record.” Gareth looks around at his bandmates. “Any ideas about what we wanna do first?”
The room plunges into silence until Eddie speaks up. “This isn’t the nudie website, right?”
Grant snorts. “No, that’s OnlyFans.”
“That was a quick answer, Granty-Boy. A little too quick.”
“Beavis! Butthead!” Jeff snaps, effectively shutting them up. “Robin’s email said we should just introduce ourselves and say that we’re excited to be on TikTok.”
He aims the camera at Eddie first. “Go ahead and say your name.”
“Eddie.”
“Christ on a cracker.” He massages the bridge of his nose. “Try actually greeting people. Like, ‘hey, I’m Eddie.’”
“Coulda just said that,” Eddie grumbles, but he looks into the camera and repeats what Jeff said. The rest of the band follows suit as Jeff directs them.
When it’s Jeff’s turn, he smiles and turns the camera on himself. “I’m Jeff. Welcome to Corroded Coffin’s TikTok!” He moves his finger off of the record button. “All right, let’s see what we got.”
“Go ahead and say your name.”
“Eddie.”
“Christ on a cracker. Try actually greeting people. Like, ‘hey, I’m Eddie.’”
“Coulda just said that. Okay, hey, I’m Eddie.”
“Great. Okay, now Grant.”
“I’m Grant. Super excited to finally be on OnlyFans.”
“Grant!”
“Sorry, I mean TikTok.”
“Gare?”
“Hi, I’m Gareth. I like long walks on the beach, outdoor concerts—”
“This isn’t your personal dating profile.”
“Just making conversation.”
“You’re all hopeless. Anyway. I’m Jeff. Welcome to Corroded Coffin’s TikTok!”
Jeff glances up from the video, cringing as it starts playing on a loop. Whatever Robin had in mind for this social media endeavor, it probably wasn’t this.
“Hey, Gareth?”
“Ya?”
“Can you Google how to edit videos on TikTok?”

Hello and welcome to a episode of...
Crab Over Analyzes "Naked Persimmon" from "33 and 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee!"
Where, like the title says, I'm going to go through Mike's fantasy because there's a lot I want to unpack.
Now for context, at the 13-ish minute mark in 33 & 1/3, the mind control guy says (and I quote):
“Hm, interesting fantasies they have. Fixation, Withdrawal, Schizophrenia, Regression.”
Let's get this started because it's going to be long:
In the mind control guy's list he puts Mike at being “Schizophrenia". My first thought is, why? What about Mike’s fantasy screams “schizophrenia”? Is it because there’s two distinct versions of himself? Is it because he's singing two different styles of songs? Is it another reason?
The scene begins with a high energy, pretty standard Monkee sounding tune (and by Monkee sounding tune I mean it sounds like the Beatles). We see that the woman from before is shooting at a wanted poster with Mike’s face on it (Figure One). It seems he is wanted for 25,000 dollars for the crime of fraud. The poster is also split in two, one side that’s faded in black and white while the other is saturated with color. (Forgive me for the screenshot qualities I'm not working with much here)
Figure One, The Wanted Poster
We also see, perched on top of the image of himself, Mike clad in his nudie suit! (Figure Two) He also jumps when the woman shoots at him like she narrowly missed his head. While cowboy Mike is dealing with that, another Mike climbs up next to him. He’s dressed in more "modern" clothing, something right out of the first episode of the Monkees TV show (Figure Three).
Figures Two and Three, Cowboy and Monkee Mike
The Monkee Mike begins to kind of speak-sing,
Now it’s quite a while ago that I had a strange intuition Something was wrong with my gold record situation
Then, the Cowboy Mike cuts in,
Why do they say with so much adoration?
Then the other Mike angrily responds,
Well I can’t see that it makes it right!
Then out of nowhere Cowboy Mike starts strumming his guitar and changes the style of the song entirely. It’s slower with an audible old-sounding piano.
So for a while, I’ll just play my guitar And I’ll play a couple of tunes And I know that it may not get me too far But it’s the only thing I believe that’s true
During this part, Cowboy Mike encourages the audience, or rather the other Mike, to “sing along!”. Monkee Mike begrudgingly accepts and starts harmonizing with the Cowboy (Figure Four).
Figure Four, The Mikes Singing Together
Then Monkee Mike looks around, as if he knows someone is watching, and starts strumming his guitar to the same style as before,
Well the devil incarnate was runnin’ music supervision Put me in a state of catalytic euphemism
But Cowboy Mike butts again,
Someone’s preaching about the wonder world of communism
Then the other Mike continues, a little more defeated than last time,
But me I don’t understand it all-
And back to Cowboy Mike taking the song back over!
So for a while, I’ll just play my guitar And I’ll sing a couple of tunes And I know that it may not get me too far But it’s the only thing I believe that’s true
Monkee Mike, of course, doesn’t let this go much longer and takes the song back,
Well tell me Mr. TV Man, where do you make your moral stand? Which way, say, do you take your pay? Do you walk straight up? Or do you face the other way?
Then he holds out a long “woah” before screaming something into Cowboy Mike’s face. I’m not entirely sure what it is because the audio on the video isn’t that great (and I should also say the lyrics may also be wrong I'm working with very little here). Cowboy Mike then takes the song back to the slower tempo, but Monkee Mike doesn’t try to really fight it this time,
For a while, I’ll play my guitar And I’ll sing a couple of tunes And I know that it may not get me too far But it’s the only thing I believe that’s true
After they finish the last line, Monkee Mike gets shot (probably the woman) offscreen and falls over, presumably dead (Figure Five). Then Cowboy Mike hesitantly repeats the last line and is then promptly shot as well.
Figure Five, Monkee Mike is Shot
Now what does this have to do with schizophrenia? Well, I believe this is just the movie’s way of saying Mike is split into two-ish personalities.
(I also may be wrong about this, but I believe 33 & 1/3 is trying to say something about dissociative identity disorder, not schizophrenia, but I genuinely can’t tell)
The Cowboy Mike represents his desire to be his own person separate from the Monkees. In this persona, he’s his own musician. He's fully embraced his Texas roots and happily sings songs about playing the guitar. However, I still believe this Mike is some sort of facade since the nudie suit and song are so over-the-top country it’s comical. I would even say the Cowboy Mike's part of the song farcical. Mike is still forced to put on an act even when he’s trying to be true to himself due to that inherent desire to perform.
The Monkee Mike, on the other hand, is obviously tied down to his life as a Monkee, even when his true self tries to shine through. This Mike also isn’t afraid to ask questions and combat topics that the Cowboy Mike may want to but can't due to his "non-celebrity status" (I personally am interpreting Cowboy Mike to be an vision of Mike that never became famous but he still sings). Monkee Mike is an idealization of what Mike wants to do with his status as a Monkee but can't due to continually being "cut off" by producers, directors, or even his own fears.
The Monkee Mike also being shot first represents, to me, the death of the Monkees after their heyday. His celebrity status as a Monkee will be the first to go, then his other fabricated self. After that, there’s not much Mike left. He’s a fraud either way. The “only thing [he] believe[s is] true” is his music, not himself.
If you made it this far, Thank you for reading this! I'd love to hear your thoughts and/or comments about it in the tags, replies, or whatever!
#uh happy weird girl wednezday i guess?#i hope this was somewhat fun to read#sorry it was so long I kind of lost the plot#the monkees#33 1/3 revolutions per monkee#mike nesmith#crab's jukebox#last train to crabsville

From classic reds to gothic black, there are numerous options to choose from, and there is at least one shade that will perfectly complement your skin tone, undertone, lip color, lip shape, and all the other criteria.
But out of a sea of options, we believe there are some lipstick colour shades that have stood the test of time. In this blog, we will look at some classic and modern shades that every woman must own.

More than half of the women chose red lipstick as their preferred shade, making it the most popular lip color around the world. Have you seen the fan following Taylor Swift gathered with those red lips (along with singing good songs)? Nude lipstick shades are for gals who don’t want to stand out because of their highly pigmented lips. Nude lipsticks are perfect for women who love simplicity or a natural, no-makeup look. Nude lipsticks can be the definition of versatility; they go well with any skin tone and outfit. Nude shades are perfect for office wear, as they do not compromise your professional look.

modern AU shenanigans
1) Did you know Barbie is from Wisconsin? Like, officially? (she is from a made-up town though)
2) Did you know there is, in fact, a Country Rock Barbie? Did you know that there are TWO country rock barbies? (beads, fringe AND denim on both. It made me genuinely consider whether it would be in character for AU Blondie to have ever worn a nudie suit (the jury is still out on that detail))
3) This fic is really proving that my fanfic writing philosophy is just. Hoarding every single headcanon I have ever had or liked from someone else and forcefully misinterpreting it. So sorry to everyone else in the GBU fandom you are definitely gonna see machacamiento of some of them in the fic

Album #462: The Flying Burrito Brothers “The Gilded Palace of Sin” (1969)
If this list were solely based on the awesomeness of a band’s name, then this album would easily crack the Top 10.
The two exceptions to my disdain of country music are: 1) Johnny Cash, and 2) folk-influenced country music. For a modern example of a band that falls into exception #2, think of The Avett Brothers. For a more classic example of a band that falls into exception #2, apparently one should think of The Flying Burrito Brothers.
Ultimately, the country sound is heavier than I would prefer on this album. The track “Sin City” sounds like something that would convince congregants to get out of their pews and square dance. It’s equal parts gospel and country, just like the phrase “Halle-yeehaw!”™
Gram Parsons’s vocals really shine on the band’s cover of the song “Dark End of the Street.” The rock influence through the guitar on this track easily makes it my favorite on the album. The band returns to its country roots on the next track “My Uncle.” My favorite part of that song is when it ended. My second favorite part of that song is easily the banjo! “Wheels” is a bit hokey. How many couples have slow danced to the track “Hot Burrito #1″ at the honky tonk? But-for the meaning of the lyrics, it would make a good wedding song for people who like country music. As for me, I prefer the more upbeat, rocking track “Hot Burrito #2.″
Rating: 6
How I Listened: Spotify
Takeaway: I really wanted to like this album, but it just did not quite do it for me. They really rocked the Nudie suits for the photo used as the album cover art so at least they have that going for the them. And they still have one of the coolest names in music history.

10 Awe-Inspiring Creative Collaborations From Across Australia
10 Awe-Inspiring Creative Collaborations From Across Australia
TDF Design Awards
by Sasha Aarons
Edition Office & Daniel Boyd, For Our Country. Photo – Ben Hosking.
Edition Office + Daniel Boyd, For Our Country
For Our Country is the inaugural National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander war memorial, commissioned by the Australian War Memorial, and located on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country (Canberra). The design is the collaborative work of artist Daniel Boyd, who is a Kudjala/Gangalu man, and Edition Office architects.
The memorial is designed to reflect the lived experience and memory of all Indigenous communities, including those who served in the Australian armed services, and the trauma of the frontier wars of colonisation.
Behind a ceremonial fire pit lies the sculptural pavilion made primarily of fractured basalt shards. A wall of two-way mirrored glass set with thousands of transparent lenses represents our perception, while highlighting our incomplete understanding of history.

Nicholas Johnston + Kristian Klein, Krof Cutlery
Rogerseller and Miele Design Centre alum Nicholas Johnston and restaurateur Kristian Klein have collaborated on Krof – a perfectly balanced stainless steel cutlery collection that brings the elegance of modern dining to the home dinner table.
Inspired by Australia’s love for contemporary cuisine, the makers of Krof cutlery wanted their new range to complement the food we love to eat, without forsaking utility. The result is a refined, contemporary and durable first collection of cutlery that has been specifically developed with modern eating in mind.
Arthur Seigneur + Adam Goodrum, Exquisite Corpse
‘Longbow’ is a credenza from the three piece-collection ‘Exquisite Corpse’, by A+A – a collaboration between Adam Goodrum and Arthur Seigneur, originally created as an exhibition for Melbourne Design Week
The initial design and patterns were conceived by industrial designer Adam, then finessed by Melbourne-based French marquetry artisan Arthur. The duo envisioned the colours and patterns together, resulting in a cascading kaleidoscopic design inspired by the concentric symmetry of a lotus blossom.
Using just a scalpel, ruler and wood glue, Arthur painstakingly covered the credenza with 10,000+ ribbons of custom-dyed straw imported from Burgundy. Exploiting the material’s reflective properties, this straw has been laid in varying and often contrasting directions, imbuing the surface with a dynamic, textured quality.

Manapan x Foolscap Studio, Gulnura Furniture Suite
Melbourne-based interior designers Foolscap Studio have joined forces with Manapan, furniture designers and makers from Milingimbi Island, 500km east of Darwin in Arnhem Land. Manapan is a self-sufficient and self-funded enterprise owned and operated by the Yolngu people, the traditional custodians of East Arnhem Land.
Crafted from local gum, this family of bespoke boardroom furniture designed for the Melbourne Airport is inspired by the Gulnura (the Yolngu word for ‘lightning snake’) local to Milingimbi Island/Yurrwi. The Gulnara table and sideboard were commissioned for the office of the CEO.
The Big Group + Koichi Takada Architects, Landmark by Lexus
Catering and events company The Big Group collaborated with Koichi Takada Architects in 2019 to design and deliver Landmark by Lexus – a three-storey, temporary pavilion located at Flemington Racecourse during Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Infusing Lexus’ Japanese values of warmth and hospitality with the design directive of the rich native landscape of Australia, Koichi Takada Architects created a voluminous sheer ceiling installation.
Undulating overhead, this installation flowed across the entire ceiling of the third level, encompassing guests in dreamy layers of raw linen fabric. The Big Group team then tested and sampled various materials and execution methods, while conferring with Koichi Takada Architects (located in Sydney) remotely.
Through a series of material and manufacturing refinements, all elements of this installation were produced off site and assembled in situ.
Left: Obus & Olana Janfa, Olana x Obus. Photo – Nynno Bel-Air. Right: Pan After & Alice Oehr, Paper Pattern Collection. Photo – Josh Robenstone.
Obus + Olana Janfa, Olana x Obus
Inspired by the extraordinary power of mothers, and the connection he feels to his birth country, Melbourne-based Ethiopian-Norwegian artist Olana Janfa worked directly with Melbourne fashion label Obus to translate his work into four unique textile prints.
The IMAYĒ print is dedicated to Olana’s mother, and is a series of traditional African mothers and children, while the TULLU and SABEL prints (named after Olana’s grandmother and mother respectively) are his interpretation of Obus’ more classic florals.
LENCHAA translates to ‘lion’, and utilises warm, earthy tones and pops of fuchsia pink to express strength and confidence.
Pan After + Alice Oehr, Paper Pattern Collection
In line with their long history of celebrating handmade and one-of-a-kind objects from around the world, Pan After looked to collaborate with designer and illustrator Alice Oehr on a collection of original patterns to be constructed into a collection of layered paper vessels.
This handcrafted range was crafted by a collective of women employed by the Wola Nani project in South Africa. The skill of the Wola Nani crafters using the age-old technique of papier-mâché brings these patterns to life in a collection of sculptural, stackable and functional pieces.

Nudie Jeans + Waverley Mills, Recycled Blanket
Nudie Jeans and Waverley Mills have pioneered a new process to transform deadstock denim into soft, merino blend blankets. This collaboration began in 2019, when Nudie Jeans Australia CEO Bryce Alton met Waverley Wills CEO Andrew Cuccurullo at a sustainability conference. Upon learning that Waverley Mills had the technology to shred post-consumer Nudie Jeans and blend them with locally-produced wool and recycled polyester, the brands decided to collaborate.
The result is the Nudie Jeans x Waverley Mills Recycled Blanket made from 65 per cent Tasmanian wool (including waste and offcuts), 20 per cent post-consumer jeans, and 15 per cent recycled polyester.
Waverley Mills is Australia’s oldest working textile mill, established in 1874.
Centre for Appropriate Technology + Elliat Rich + Outside Assembly, Wren Furniture Suite for ApMurra Furniture
The Centre for Appropriate Technology (CfAT) worked alongside multidisciplinary designer Elliat Rich and Industrial Designers Outside Assembly to produce an indoor-outdoor hybrid furniture suite. The Wren Furniture Suite was inspired by the Fairywren, one of the few small native bird species who has successfully adapted to urbanisation.
This range was produced by Centre for Appropriate Technology (CfaT), a training organisation that provides funding support and a platform for First Nations people to be employed and trained as apprentices.
Edition Office & Yhonnie Scarce, In Absence. Photo – Ben Hosking.
Edition Office + Yhonnie Scarce, In Absence
The fifth annual NGV Architecture Commission, In Absence, is a collaboration between contemporary artist and Kokatha and Nukunu woman Yhonnie Scarce, and Melbourne architecture studio Edition Office. In Absence seeks to provide visitors with an understanding of indigenous construction, design, industry, and agriculture before European settlement – thousands of years of sustainable systems and ideas that have been largely erased from Australian education and history.
The black-stained Tasmanian oak vertical cylinder is split into two towering chambers, separated by a void. Yhonnie’s glass-blown yams line the walls, with 1600 of the precise objects installed to creep upwards with increasing density towards the sky, capturing the light with a sense of shimmering movement. In Absence celebrates country and culture, and highlights the fallacy of terra nullius – the myth that the land was ever empty.
The project seeks to celebrate and to give presence and exposure to Indigenous history and knowledge, by providing a meditative space to acknowledge this history.

Why Super Fan 99?
Super Fan’s name comes from a line in the cult 90s comedy ‘Swingers’. “I’m gonna make Wayne Gretzsky’s head bleed for super fan number 99 over there” You can watch the clip here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaAtavKP0-4
Our first logo incorporated ice hockey sticks in reference and was designed by British illustrator Nicholas Stevenson. Our current logo was created by Chicago based artist Shaun Miller. The label was born in August 2014.
What Styles of Music Does Super Fan Release?
We love all music which can transport you to a different time and place. In the past we have released powerpop, psych, dreampop, Americana, new wave and on occasion slightly louder indie-rock type stuff too. The common through line which links all of our releases is rich melodies that you can’t shake from your head.
I Work in a Record Shop, How Can We Stock Super Fan?
Sure! We don’t have distro at this point but are happy to stock you direct at cost price. Please mail us and we can work out the best way to get our releases in your store. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.
I’m a Radio DJ, How Can I Receive Advance Music to Play on My Show?
We send out WAVs along with press releases around four weeks prior to release. All exposure is good for a tiny label like ourselves so we’d love to hear one of our tunes get a spin on your show or podcast however small it may be. Don’t be shy, drop us a line and we’ll see you are added to our mail out. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.
I’d Like to Receive Advance Copies for Review, Can I Be Added to the Press List?
Of course! As with radio we hugely appreciate all press however small, even a tweet or a repost on Soundcloud is massively helpful to help get word out. Drop us a line and we’ll make sure you are added to the mail out. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.
I’d Love Super Fan to Consider Releasing My Music, Do You Accept Submissions?
Very much so. We love hearing your music and listen to every single submission. We are always on the look out for new artists to work with but should add that to date have only released one artist from a submission. Soundcloud or Bandcamp links are preferred along with a few lines about the project. Alternatively you can go old school and use snail mail to send a tape or CD. Contact details are at the bottom of the page. If we like it we will be sure to get back to you.
I’d Like to Be Notified About Pre-orders For Limited Edition Releases, How Can I Find Out Before They’re All Sold Out?
Many of our releases are extremely limited and can sell out in a day so it is best to subscribe to our mailing list to be notified as soon as they are on sale. Drop us a line with ‘hello’ in the subject line to the email address at the bottom of the page.
What Formats Do You Release On?
We are open to releasing on all formats, the more creative the better. In the past we have put out tapes, 5” lathes, 7” vinyl, 8” lathes, 10” lathes, 12” vinyl and CD as well as digital.
What Is A Lathe?
Lathe cutting is a process which utilizes a cutting method to record sound grooves on to a disc. It is an alternative to the modern practice of pressing vinyl with metal plates. This means you can do shorter runs unlike vinyl which is often made in runs upwards of 100.
Why Are Lathe Cuts More Expensive Than Regular Vinyl?
When a lathe is cut each copy must be set up by a human and the music is played out in real time like when you dub a cassette. This ancient technique is a delicate and time consuming process, essentially each copy is unique unlike mass produced vinyl. They are however lower fidelity often with some surface noise. Many consider them to be playable pieces of art due to the care which is taken in hand making them. All of our records are cut in Tuscon, Arizona and then shipped to us in the UK. This also adds to the cost due to import charges. They are however very collectable with some of ours trading for £50 on Discogs.
What Is £100 Pop Vids?
We set up £100 Pop Vids to make music promos to help promote our releases. The first was for Queen of Jeans track ‘Dance’ From there we continued to make more and have since made videos for Lolipop, Lame-O and Burger Records bands. Every video cost under £100 to make hence the name. We enjoy testing the boundaries of DIY video making. A great idea doesn’t have to cost the world.
Can I Do Work Experience at Super Fan?
We have been asked this a couple of times which is really lovely. At current the label is essentially a one man operation run out of a small studio flat. Like many small labels it is run on top of a day job so evenings and weekends are spent keeping things ticking over. We sadly don’t have the space or need for extra people just yet but please do still say hi as there may be other ways you can get involved. We’re always keen to meet photographers, graphic designers, illustrators, videographers, basically anyone who may be able to lend their skills to future projects.

Got a bit inspired by this ask, so without further ado please let me present my suggestions for what Harry could wear for his next show, at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville TN;
(no Stetsons in this post!)
How amazing would he look channeling the late and great Gram Parsons in this spectacular Nudie Cohen suit, photographed in 1969?
He could go for any Nudie-like creation really, vintage or a new custommade suit with his choice of theme. Guitars and roses would be very Harry.
He could also keep it more modern in something like these Stella McCartney looks - he has worn Stella before.. and those trousers are amazing.
Or since we know he likes jumpsuits (Will we ever be over the Kiwi look..?), he could go all in and wear one similar to this pink beauty, originally worn by country legend Patsy Cline in the 50s;
He could totally pull that off!
#i love country glam#can't wait to see what he'll wear#whatever the two harrys come up with it will be fab#harry's fashion choices#nashville#ryman auditorium#hs tour#mine

8 Statement Looks You Can Pull Off This Spring/Summer

8 Statement Looks You Can Pull Off This Spring/Summer
Bank statements, police statements, damage limitation statements; the consensus on statements is that they’re no good thing. However, statement looks – when approached with the right amount of chutzpah – can fast-track you from middle of the road to menswear maestro.
We know, we know, ‘statement pieces’ often create the kind of outfits that lead to well-meaning celebrities ending up being mercilessly mocked in the web’s comment sections or immortalised via memes.
But fear not, because we’ve tapped the advice of some of the style industry’s most clued-up so you can reap the rewards of dressing daringly with minimal chance of online annihilation. Wardrobe crisis averted.
White Trousers
Stating the obvious: white trousers may as well be physically moulded from Marmite because of their ability to polarise opinion. Everyone has something to say about white legwear, and more often than not they aren’t fans. But there are ways to keep the haters at bay.
“Ensure your white trousers are cut slim and not too long at the hem, so showing a bit of ankle,” says Reiss head of menswear design, Alex Field. If those ankles are as white as the trousers, it’s advisable to slap a small amount of tan on them, or you risk looking like you’re wearing sports socks.
While tonal outfits in shades of black, navy and even beige are a solid choice, when it comes to white Field suggests breaking up the look to avoid any sailor jibes. “Style the trousers with something that isn’t white. Preferably a knit in a neutral colour or navy for a classic, nautical look.”
Key Pieces
Floral Shirt
We love the minimal, painfully tasteful Nordic menswear movement as much as the next pseudo-Scandinavian dresser, but (dare we say it) sometimes it gets a bit, well, boring. What’s the antithesis to boring? A floral shirt, of course.
“Remember, this look is more Bloomsbury boffin than it is Honolulu hottie, so if a floral shirt screams Hawaiian luau, step away slowly,” says style writer Miriam Bouteba. “Go for micro or painted florals while also making sure that the shirt’s base colour is dark and short sleeves are rolled slightly to minimise any whiff of novelty.”
Styling-wise, opt for smart chinos or tailored trousers and wear the shirt buttoned up or open over a plain T-shirt. For a next-level move, try tucking the shirt in for a sleek finish.
Key Pieces
Pastel Blazer
Despite what many think, your surname doesn’t have to be Gatsby for you to be able to pull off a pastel blazer. Already one of the season’s key fashion trends, frankly they’re a no-brainer.
“A pastel blazer may seem a daring choice, but it’s a versatile and easy way to dress for spring/summer,” says stylist Ozzy Shah, who has dressed the likes of Olly Murs and Jim Chapman.
As softly stylish as they are, pastel blazers tend to scream try-hard, so keep things simple. Shah’s go-to combinations include “a crisp white shirt for the day and a black roll neck in the evening”. But they can also be deployed as part of a smart separates look (either contrasting or tonal); casually over a T-shirt, or used to soften a more rugged denim or chambray button-down. No matter which option you choose, swerve the cliché boat shoes in favour of loafers or clean sneakers. Pastel perfected.
Key Pieces
Relaxed, Cropped Jeans
We’ve lost count of the number of times the nineties have made a comeback (for better or worse). This season the decade is returning (yet again), and there’s nothing more nostalgic than a pair of cropped jeans.
Whereas the first time around cropped jeans got the full-on grunge treatment, for a more wearable look tone down your inner Kurt Cobain and smarten things up. “Cropped jeans should be cut with a relaxed fit and worn with half cab shoes or desert boots,” says Johan Lindstedt, a denim designer at Nudie Jeans.
To reclaim looser fits from the skate world, try dressing them up with Derbies and an Oxford shirt, or hit the middle ground with athleisure pieces that give off sportswear vibes without the need to drop into a half pipe.
Key Pieces
Neckerchief
Neckerchiefs are near peak wardrobe statement, and unfortunately, the line between cabin crew and cool is alarmingly thin. But while this bandana-style accessory serves little-to-no functional purpose, when worn correctly, it can look damn good.
“The best way to pull off the summer neck scarf is to make sure it’s not interfering with or being covered by any high collars,” says stylist Nas Abraham, who has worked with the likes of Adidas, River Island and Hackett.
By this suggestion, look to grandad collar shirts, lightweight knitwear and T-shirts in block colours to let the neck scarf speak for itself.
Key Pieces
Wide Brim Hat
With the exception of the baseball cap, which seems to be having another season in the spotlight, few modern men are willing to doff to the art of wearing a hat. That sound you hear? It’s our ancestors turning in their graves.
They may never again be everyday staples, but for summer holidays, a wide brim hat like a Panama or fedora offers an easy way to send your style stock skyrocketing.
“The best way to pull off a wide brim hat is to feel comfortable wearing it,” says Noel Stewart, creative director of historic London milliner Christys’. “Play with the hat on your head in the mirror (preferably two mirrors), so you can see how the shape affects your silhouette.”
In short, confidence is vital. Once you’ve scored that, the hat (depending on its colour and material) can be put to work in a range of outfits both smart and casual.
Key Pieces
Coloured Lens Sunglasses
The return of the nineties isn’t just bringing with it old-school denim trends; coloured lens sunglasses are also back in the game.
Fortunately, we’re not talking those wraparound ski goggle types that were essentially more popular than eyes at the time, but something a little more stylish.
“Choosing the right colour lenses boils down to two main factors: where you are wearing them and your individual look,” says David Lochhead, co-founder of British eyewear brand Finlay & Co. “Dark grey or deep blue lenses are perfect if you prefer a minimal look and wear predominantly neutral colours.”
To signpost that you’re more menswear maverick and less Croc-wearing tourist, always seek out a pair that suits your face shape. Classic Clubmaster styles are a good catch-all for most people.
Key Pieces
Patterned Suit
In the world of menswear there’s bold, and then there’s patterned suit bold. On a scale of one to statement, it’s right there at the top. But don’t let that put you off; donning patterned tailoring doesn’t have to end in disaster and regret.
“Think of where you’ll be wearing it,” says menswear writer Tom Courcey. “If it’s for a formal occasion then avoid, unless you’re certain it won’t break the dress code. If going to dinner at a restaurant or a summer wedding, a bold windowpane check suit will work perfectly in a grey or blue hue.”
If a full patterned two-piece feels a little too statement, try toning it down by using separates, such as a patterned grey windowpane check blazer anchored with simple black trousers.

Do you trust your friends and their judgement of character? If your friend is hanging out with someone then that person must be cool, right?
I am in love with Miranda Lambert and, even though she doesn’t know it, she and the music she makes are great friends of mine. So, knowing that Miranda hangs out with Angaleena Presley means that she must be pretty cool.
Wrangled is pure two-stepping, Nudie suit wearing country music. It is the sound of the Louisiana Hayride and classic Grand Ole Opry with short flashes of punk rock attitude and feminist badassery. This is the sound that modern country music is missing.
Ninety percent of this record is incredibly old school. Wrangled is reminiscent of Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette in both sound and fuck-you-I’m-a-woman-and-will-kick-your-ass-and-then-sing-about-it attitude.
The other ten percent of this record has a modern almost country-leaning punk edge. There is even a rap verse that somehow fits. It is strange how it just flows on this album without calling too much attention to itself.
Wrangled is an excellent addition to any collection of real country music.
My favorite track: Bless My Heart

Get cheeky at Paris' first naked restaurant, where diners eat escargot in the buff
Why someone would want to risk dropping hot soup in their lap without a pants barrier is beyond me, but yet, the world continues to enjoy nude dining.
Naked restaurants, where folks are invited to dine in the buff, have been popping up in major cities around the world — and Paris is the latest.
SEE ALSO: World Naked Gardening Day is a nature loving feast for the eyes
Following big openings (sorry) in London and Tokyo in 2016, Paris has welcomed the arrival of O'naturel, the city's first naturist restaurant, reports Le Parisien.
Located in a small, unassuming street in the 12th arrondissement, sporting heavy blackout curtains, the 40-seat restaurant encourages longtime nudists and newbie nudies alike to leave their belongings in the cloakroom and dine in "complete freedom."
What'll you be eating, while you're trying super hard not to stare at your date's bits? According to the website's menu, roasted snail, homemade dried duck chips, followed by inverted crumble with lime mascarpone. No chipolatas, here.
Reactions have been predictably mixed.
If I were the proprietor of this place, I'd probably have avoided the phrase "Successful soft opening":https://t.co/Qp1IjJgXEd

Not shocked. They have nude beaches and resorts of course the next step would be restaurant.

My brain immediately goes to "I hope they have single-use protections for those chairs!" 😵 https://t.co/TCUKM3Vxiq via @amcelder

At least you wouldn’t have to unbutton your pants...

First date idea. Also, probably, last date idea. https://t.co/czCEV2LDSU
— Andy Rattinger (@Rattinger) November 7, 2017
London's naked restaurant, The Bunyadi, operates on the same "clothing-optional" policy, where you can "revisit the beginning where everything was fresh, free and unadulterated from the trappings of modern life."
Tokyo's version, The Amrita, came under fire after revealing plans to weigh diners at the door, and bar those who are overweight from entering.
The trend made it to Australia for one night only in Melbourne in 2016, when two local radio hosts decided to open a 50-person naked pop-up dubbed "The Noble Experiment."
Look, going out for your birthday dinner in your birthday suit might not be everyone's cup of tea, but any event that champions body positivity and self confidence is alright by me. Personally, I'll be keeping my pants on at the dinner table, but wishing them all the best.

9 Things to Have Love for in Alabama
Just like when I wrapped up my time in Texas as well as Louisiana and Mississippi, I wanted to share some things I enjoyed and explored that didn’t quite fit elsewhere. This was my first visit to Alabama, and it’s the only state I’m visiting where I didn’t have any local hosts.
Even without local hosts, I had some nice moments with folks I met while out and about. While walking around downtown Montgomery and snapping photos of the architecture, I met an older African-American gentleman named Mr. Freeman who I walked with for a couple of blocks. He shared a bit of his and the city’s history and pointed me the right direction for lunch. The staff at the Sloss Furnaces National Historical Site – particularly Regina and Jane – answered all sorts of questions I had about their personal memories of when the furnaces were up and running. And my Air BnB host Ashley tried to adjust her work schedule to show me her favorite sites, it didn’t work but she shared some great local suggestions of places to eat.
However, of the places I’ve visited thus far, Alabama is the place where I felt the most divided energy. Maybe after two weeks on the road, I’m a bit run down. And maybe local hosts make the difference in understanding the social, economic, racial, religious, and political dynamics of places. But, there were little things that people I chatted with said – about Trump being one of the signs that the end of days are coming (and that’s a good thing), or a woman shouting, somewhat accusatorily, “Make America Great Again” at me when I pointed out that her neighbor in the parking lot had a Johnson sticker (her car had a Trump sticker).
But with all that, I’m going to try and focus on love for Alabama. Because as Dr. King preached at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, “it is love that will save our world and our civilization, love even for enemies.” Though I don’t consider these folks enemies.
Top Row (L to R):
1. Little River Canyon National Preserve – A beautiful nature preserve in the Southern Appalachians with a parkway that takes you to lots of scenic overlooks, and some short hiking trails. For those who like camping, the neighboring DeSoto State Park has lots of good options from primitive and improved sites to cabins and a motel.
2. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald Museum – Zelda (nee Sayre) Fitzgerald was from Montgomery, Alabama, and this small, house museum is the only one in the country dedicated to the pair. The sole staff member of the museum gives a great tour – she also had a very stylish modern – flapper style haircut, which seemed fitting as many called Zelda the first flapper. Lots of old photos, books, and magazines where Scott’s stories were published. Though my favorite, might be the list of rules for guests, adapted from what the Fitzgeralds used to say, which included “Week-end guests are respectfully notified that invitations to stay on over Mnday, issued by the host and hostess during the small hours of Sunday morning, must not be taken seriously.”
3. Montgomery’s Historical Markers – Montgomery existed before Alabama was a state, so there’s a lot of history in it. And, all over the city, there are some excellent historical markers. I’ll be honest that I tend to skip the ones about Civil War History (though there are many), in favor of the Civil Rights History, cultural history, and the history of Montgomery as a slave trading center. The posting of the latter supposedly led to some pushback from folks not wanting to focus on that part of the city’s past (according to this NY Times article), but they are prominently displayed and really well done.
Middle Row (L to R):
4. Montgomery’s Historic Architecture – It seems to be a theme running through these states, but Montgomery had some beautiful historic architecture. Some of it has been beautifully kept up like the Steiner-Lobman building which I shared a bit more about on Instagram. Other spots were in disrepair, and still others in the process of renovation. Like many places, Mr. Freeman told me that downtown Montgomery is experiencing gentrification with folks wanting to move closer into the city. He mentioned that a number of the old buildings will be renovated into condos.
5. Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark – Sloss might have been my favorite thing I saw in Alabama! Sloss Furnaces was a key driver of the development of Birmingham, which unlike Montgomery, really didn’t come to be a city until after the Civil War (in 1871). The furnaces started up in 1881 as part of a company created by Colonel James Withers Sloss who recognized that the area had all the natural resources to make pig iron (coal, iron, and limestone). The furnaces closed in 1971, but workers and community members advocated to make it a historic site. The City of Birmingham manages the site, which has National Historic Landmark status, and is an amazing place to take a self-guided tour, take photographs, and learn about some of America’s industrial history. It also hosts educational programs, supports the metal arts, hosts musical events, and has what is supposed to be a very scary haunted house in October. For those who like haunted places, this supposedly is one! I posted some other photos here and here.
6. Dexter Avenue’s Historic Church Stained Glass Windows – Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church and River City Church. Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church was one of the places in Montgomery that I stopped by to visit because of its connection to the Civil Rights Movement. It was a convening space for organizing and rallying support for and coordinating the Bus Boycotts, and, of course, where Dr. King was serving as pastor. The building has beautiful, simple stained glass windows with multi-colored squares. Down the street is a historic Methodist church, now called River City Church which has some really ornate and beautiful stained glass windows. I’ll be honest that I never paid much attention to stained glass until recently when I was in Scotland, but there is something magical and inspiring about it.
Bottom Row (L to R):
7. Hank Williams Museum – I have great love for Hank Williams’ music. To the extent that when I was in college, I hosted a pre-1960s country music show on the radio station called Honky Tonkin’ and that song by him was our theme song! Williams was born in nearby Mt. Olive, and lived for a chunk of his career in Nashville, but Montgomery was home. This museum, put together by a committed fan and collector has a lot of things to recommend itself. But the three that stood out most for me were the amazing collection of Williams’ clothes (including some Nudie Suits), the restored, powder blue Cadillac that Williams died in, and a wonderful non-stop soundtrack of Hank Williams songs. Fun fact, Hank Williams was the first country performer to wear custom suits. A trend that still continues to this day.
8. Montgomery Curb Market – it was a cold Tuesday that took me to the Montgomery Curb Market, a standing produce, flower, craft, and baker’s market open on Tuesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays. It was actually so cold, that a lot of the sellers did not show up. However, I picked up some canned turnip greens for my camping trip, and a delicious cinnamon bun from a local baker who had been selling there for 28 years.
9. Rosa Parks Museum & Library – If you only think about Rosa Parks as that little old lady who’s actions started the Montgomery Bus Boycott, this museum will reveal so much more to you about both Parks and the Boycott. Parks was a lifelong civil rights advocate working on everything from advocating for a black woman who was raped by six white men on her way home from church in the 1940s to ending Apartheid. She was only 41 when she refused to move seats, not an old lady at all, but a fierce warrior. And the Bus Boycott, which lasted 381 days, was amazingly well coordinated, through the actions of thousands of people. One of the things I found most interesting was the use of “Rolling Churches.” Local black churches bought cars (which they painted with the church name) that picked black commuters up at designated places and taxied them to their workplaces. But, paying the drivers would have been illegal, and the police were watching. Instead, the riders would make sure to pay their fares in the church collection plates on Sunday.
There was a group of students from Harvard on a spring break choir trip in the museum when I was there. It was particularly amazing to walk up to the museum, which is located at the very corner that Mrs. Parks was arrested, and see their local tour bus parked outside, across from buildings that, I suspect, looked much the same in 1955.
