Rockwell XFV-12A

Around 1970 the Navy could not see how it was going to be able to replace its old Essex and Midway carriers with Nimitz-class supercarriers. Admiral Elmo Zumwalt directed a study of alternatives which resulted in the Sea Control Ship (SCS), a mini-carrier equipped with V/STOL fighters and ASW aircraft. The USN invited manufactures to propose demonstration programs for a new aircraft, called the V/STOL Fighter Technology Prototype, to replace the outdated Harrier and serve on the SCS or other ships much smaller than conventional carriers: BAe and MD proposed an improved Harrier and a supersonic Harrier with a PCB (Plenum-Chamber Burning) engine; Boeing and Northrop proposed jet-powered tail-sitters; Lockheed-California proposed a propeller-driven tail-sitter; and Rockwell proposed a canard-delta aircraft powered by a large and enormously powerful engine that used the ejector-lift system for V/STOL. The Navy awarded the contract to Rockwell in 1972, instead of choosing designs based on proved technology, and the XFV-12A designation (twelth in the V series, not in the F series; the F-12 was the interceptor verison of the Blackbird) was allotted. Even though the forward fuselage and landing gear of the A-4 and the wing box, air intakes, and fuel tanks of the F-4 were used to speed the program up, it still ran far behind schedule. The prototype was rolled out in December 1976 and the first flight was scheduled for 1979.
Engine Configuration For takeoff and landing, the entire engine was ducted to hollow-section "ejector flaps" (also called augmentor flaps) out along the wings and the canard by pilot command via a diverter valve box. The high-energy hot gas forced fresh air from above through the ejector flaps at a ratio of 7.5:1 to boost thrust by 70 percent. The ejector flaps could be raised or lowered to provide a smooth transition from vertical to horizontal flight or vice versa. After the XFV-12A's cancellation, de Havilland Canada designed an aircraft with ejectors build into the roots of a delta wing. GD incorporated their concept into the E-7, a F-16-based delta-winged STOVL aircraft. DHC built a large powered model and tested it in 1987. The EL system was large and control was difficult as a result of the large air mass moving through the wing root during transition, and nothing came of it (though not because the EL couldn't produce enough thrust as in the XFV-12A's case) despite the attractive low exhaust velocity.
Cancellation Rockwell and Pratt & Whitney experienced several major technical problems, and the thrust boost from the ejector flap system was never as large in the full-scale aircraft as predicted from data collected by test rigs and sub-scale models; the XFV-12A could not leave the ground. Eventually funding dried up, the SCS was canceled, and the program proved a disappointment; however, in most future ASTOVL programs, large-scale powered models were used because of the experience gained in the XFV-12A program.

SR-71 Blackbird engineers had a perplexing problem: why some of the aircraft’s titanium corroded?
The SR-71, the most advanced member of the Blackbird family that included the A-12 and YF-12, was designed by a team of Lockheed personnel led by Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, then vice president of Lockheed’s Advanced Development Company Projects, commonly known as the “Skunk Works” and now a part of Lockheed Martin.
The Blackbird design originated in secrecy during the late 1950s with the A-12 reconnaissance aircraft that first flew in April 1962 and remained classified until 1976. President Lyndon Johnson publicly announced the existence of the YF-12A interceptor variant on Feb. 29, 1964, more than half a year after its maiden flight. The SR-71 completed its first flight on Dec. 22, 1964.
Production of the SR-71 was done at the Skunk Works plant, in Burbank, California, as the photos in this post show [the image were taken in 1965 and show some of the first SR-71 under construction: featured in the pictures are the first B models (957 and 956) under construction with an A-model (955). My dad Richard “Butch“ Sheffield told me that he watched these airplanes under construction at the Skunk Works plant at Burbank].
The airframes were built almost entirely of titanium and other exotic alloys to withstand heat generated by sustained high-speed flight: in fact, the Blackbirds were designed to cruise at Mach 3 continuously for more than one hour at altitudes up to 85,000 feet. Blackbird’s engineers had a perplexing problem as to why some of the titanium was corroding. However, they figured out the reason. It was chlorine in the water!
According to Wisconsin Metal Tech, the engineers of the SR-71 were among the first people in history to make real use of the material. In that process, they ended up throwing away a lot of material, some through necessity, some through error. At times the engineers were perplexed as to what was causing problems, but thankfully they documented and cataloged everything, which helped find trends in their failures. They discovered that spot welded parts made in the summer were failing very early in their life, but those welded in winter were fine. They eventually tracked the problem to the fact that the Burbank water treatment facility was adding chlorine to the water they used to clean the parts to prevent algae blooms in summer, but took it out in winter. Chlorine reacts with titanium, so they began using distilled water from this point on.
They discovered that their cadmium plated tools were leaving trace amounts of cadmium on bolts, which would cause galvanic corrosion and cause the bolts to fail. This discovery led to all cadmium tools to be removed from the workshop.

ZK-AMU [Beechcraft D17S Staggerwing] at Ardmore, 2006.
msn 203 was constructed new for the Canadian Department Controller of Civil Aviation of Ottawa in 1938 and was given the c/r CF-CCA.
From 1955-56, it was with Bradley Air Services and Spartan Air Service Ltd and by 1957 was in private ownership.
In 1985, after a long period of inactivity, it flew for the first time since 1958, and owing to the lapsed c/r was given a new one: C-FCCA.
It is believed to have then been carefully stored at Leeward Ranch, FL from 1991-95.
In 1995, it was sold to Aotearoa and became ZK-AMU. Sadly it didn't spend much time here and in 2007 it was exported to Australia.
In 2022 however it and VH-HID [Lockheed Model 12A Electra Junior] were purchased as part of a swap for P-51D 44-13016 / A68-674. As a result, AMU + HID are now safely hangared at Wānaka. With AMU regaining her identity on 18/07/22.

Personality- A true lone wolf she's confident, self-aware, free-spirited, & above all loyal to those that matter to her. She's also quite scrappy, resourceful, and stubborn- a non-believer when it comes to second chances. She's in a relationship.
She has the standard abilities of a goddess. As the goddess of wolves her other powers/abilities include limited lunakinesis, night vision, acclerated healing, being able to emit a sonic wolf's howl from her vocal chords, enhanced hearing & smell, adopting wolf physiology into her physical form, being able to shapeshift into a wolf, and being able to communicate with other canines.
Lykos lives on the top floor of The Dianos Building, a luxury high rise apartment building in the Lunar neighborhood of New Olympus. Her apartment is 12A. Inside, the interior design is very cool & hip with the color scheme being silver, black, ivory, and dark blue. The flooring is black mink carpeting and there's also leather & velvet furniture, moonstone and obsidian furniture pieces, and various decorative wolf fur pelts on the walls. She has two pets- twin boy siberian huskies named Romulus & Remus.
She has a couple of canine tendencies like growling when she's angry or frustrated and shaking water out of her hair.
A member of Lykos' immediate family is her mother Lycana (Titaness of lycanthropy).
She starts out her mornings by walking her dogs through Eaglepoint Park. Her own personal form of exercise is running through the Nightfall Forest & Celestial Woods in her wolf form.
Lykos and her mother have a very close relationship. They talk & text daily and they see each other all the time. When they hang out (especially during a full or new moon), they love running through the city on the rooftops of buildings in their wolf forms. They'll also enjoy a shopping trip or an olympian sized cup of chocolate crunch ice cream at The Frozen Spoon. When Lycana visits her at her apartment, Lykos loves when she brings over her delicious homemade chorizo & arepas.
A go-to drink for her is vanilla cola. She also likes beer, ginger ale, pomegranate juice, lavender tea, cookies n' cream milkshakes from The Frozen Spoon, manhattans, rum & cokes, and her mom's limonada de coco. Usuals from The Roasted Bean is an olympian sized iced tea & a large iced cinnamon latte (topped with extra cinnamon).
A favorite piece of jewelry that she always wears is a yellow gold necklace that has a full moon charm- gifted by her mom.
A typical breakfast for her is a BIG bowl of Golly Grains cinnamon crunchies cereal. She also likes going to The Hearthside Diner for a plate of hash browns, bacon, and two steak & egg breakfast burritos- with extra salsa & peppers.
Much like Lycana, Lykos hates silver jewelry and is allergic to wolfsbane.
Her other favorite ice cream flavor is cookies n' cream.
She always naps and sleeps with the wolf plushie Urso won for her during their date at the LunarWorld theme park.
Lykos is fluent in Latin.
The spicy BBQ rib sandwich is her favorite thing to get from The Bread Box.
Her favorite nail polish color to wear from Olmorfia is "Blackout."
In the pantheon, she's known for her delicious birria tacos!
Lykos is outspoken concerning many social issues including illegal underground dog fighting, humane fur farms, and illegal hunting.
With makeup she loves using eyeshadow, the Ourania eyelash curler, liquid eyeliner, & matte lipstick.
Lykos' primary source of income comes from modeling for/endorsing Hot Intoxication, Nocturnal Vibez, and La Petit Amour.
In the pantheon she's friends with Artemis (goddess of the hunt & moon), Pasithea (goddess of hallucinations & relaxation), Aphrodite (goddess of love & beauty), Lyssa (goddess of rage & frenzy), Hecate (goddess of magic & witchcraft), Urania (muse of astronomy), Alala (goddess of the war cry), Dionysus (god of wine), Apollo (god of the sun, music, poetry, healing, medicine, archery, plague, light, & knowledge), Britomartis (goddess of mountains, hunting, & fishing nets), Methe (goddess of drunkenness), and Mania (goddess of insanity).
She also respects & admires her boyfriend's mom Arktos (goddess of the night sky & constellations).
Lykos doesn't like Ailuros (goddess of cats & warfare) or her mom's boyfriend Pseudologos (god of lies). She met him very briefly once when she came by her mom's apartment.
She likes playing basketball with Apollo & Artemis. Afterwards, they all go for a run in their wolf forms.
Some of her guilty pleasures include meat lover's pizza, beef jerky, spicy tuna rolls, spicy birria tacos, as well as an order of olympian sized cajun fries with 20 chicken nuggets (with spicy buffalo dipping sauce) from Olympic Chef.
Lykos is in a relationship with her boyfriend Urso (god of bears). They met two summers ago at the Summer Solstice Music Festival & their first date was a hunting/canoeing excursion in the state of Arcadia. She enjoys their deep conversations, his cuddles, his eyes, and his breathtaking kisses. Lykos fondly remembers when they first made love- underneath the New Olympus sign after watching the sunset while drinking beers.
She went to the Underworld once where she went skiing with Mania and Hecate.
Lykos & Lyssa schedule playdates for their dogs!
Aphrodite released a limited edition handbag for her fashion brand inspired by Lykos- an ethically sourced wolf fur bag, with the fur being dyed rose gold.
In her free time Lykos enjoys archery, hunting, basketball, hiking, mixed martial arts, reading (is a fan of mystery & suspense novels), going to the cinema, dancing, watching TV, and playing video games.
Her all time favorite meal is her mom's arroz atollado.

Portable Electric Vehicle Chargers Explained
Over the past years we’ve learned to embrace the “plug” – that way your devices can stay charging all the time.
So it’s no wonder that we now see the electric vehicle charger, now commonly referred to as a fast charger, as one of the accessories you’ll want in your car.
If you’re interested in becoming a fully electric driver, it might also interest you to know the charging system in your car will work with other electric vehicles, and some can charge at a higher rate (up to 30kW, for instance) than your local 100-150 Watts station.
So what kind of charger is best for you, if any?

What is the difference between a station and fast charger?
Let’s take a look at the answers to these questions in this post.
What’s in your car’s charging port?
While many new vehicles have been sold without a charging port, these days there is a standardised port you should be able to expect in your new vehicle – 12-14v DC, 10-12A (12-14A according to some older models).
Some older vehicles may have different charging ports, or even no charging port at all.
If you find yourself in that position, then it’s definitely worth checking your owners’ manual for more information.
Which chargers do you have?
Most fast chargers are a separate device from the vehicle, the charger is plugged into the vehicle and the vehicle plugs into the charger.
So you’ll need to have these devices available – a power outlet, a fast charger and your vehicle.
However, some fast chargers are built into the vehicle (the Chevrolet Volt and plug in Prius have built-in fast chargers, for example), so you don���t need a separate device.
If you’re unsure, be sure to check if your fast charger is built-in before you buy it.
Can I use the fast charger on any vehicle?
Well, yes, you can use a fast charger with any vehicle if the charging port is the same – though there’s no reason to ever have a charger for a different vehicle.
There have been some issues with incompatibility with fast chargers from different gocharge.tech manufacturers and vehicles, however.
Some can charge most vehicles up to 50%, but no faster than that.
If your fast charger comes with a manual, you can also check which vehicles the charger is designed to work with.
If the fast charger has a display, you can also check which vehicles the charger is designed to work with.
However, it’s still a good idea to make sure your car works with it before you buy.
How do you know if a fast charger is faster?
There’s a couple of ways to work this out.
The first, and easiest is to plug a phone charger into the charger and then plug your phone into the phone charger.
The charging speed of the phone is the same as the charger, and so is the time to 100% charge.
If the phone is completely charged, then it’s a slow charger.
If you want to be slightly more scientific, look at the amount of watts needed to charge your vehicle.
This is not an exact science, and the range of voltages and amps is a bit wide.
A charger with a higher wattage can recharge your vehicle faster.
However, it’s not an exact science, and most fast chargers on the market are over 10kW.
A fast charger can give you better than 4-5 times quicker charging than a station, but as long as the fast charger is not over 10kW, then it’s probably faster.
How long does it take to charge a vehicle on a fast charger?
With a fast charger, there is no “speed limit” – so you’re not limited to a particular amount of time (though we’re told it’s between five and 10 minutes).
As long as your vehicle is charging, the time will decrease.
It will be shorter if your vehicle has full range and high power, but it will take a longer time if your battery is not fully charged, or if it is low on power (if it can only use 5kW).
When you plug your vehicle in, it should have a little indicator showing the power level and the time remaining.

The two tails were canted inward and mounted atop the aft end of each engine nacelle. Each tail consisted of a stub fin and a rudder. The stub fin was fixed in place, extending approximately 21 inches above the nacelle surface. It was constructed of titanium alloy machined parts, plate, formed members, and sheet. The stub fin contained rudder servos and housed each rudder pivot post. One full rudder, having no fixed vertical stabilizer, was mounted on each stub fin.
