Sonic also very much HAD gradual design changes between 1991-7...it's just that the general public didn't give a shit. We go from this tubbiness

To long legs and hair mcbrow here. Hoshino did Sonic CD and R 2D art, and the diff between that and here is still indicating an overall evolution. Only Amy and Eggman drastically changed, which for the former I'm glad. Better than being a literal girl Sonic clone. The rest are just continuing a trend then adding iris color

But really I feel Sonic Team did the redesigns to welcome a new era, given how Japan unironically forgot about Sonic. It's jarring- if you ignore 6-7 years of the franchise, but also distinctively full of much needed energy given the crap 1995-7 period.

Similarly I feel we're missing cultural context; both the US and Japan had a problem with associating design with specific tone, so you ended up with typecasted designs. Sonic despite having attitude and games like 3K WAS associated to being a cutesy generic mascot inferior to Hello Kitty in Japan, which is not a good thing. Almost all noncanon manga further just divorced itself from actual game tone to be a parody or cutesy manga, which both Naka and Oshima didn't like, same for early Sega Harmony Calendar art.

The US market had a forced redesign that lasted till 1994 that while ass, unfortunately just lended to the idea of not accepting a design as is, regardless of tone. So Sonic Team gave in to that for Adventure, which a competition was held in 1997 to see how it was recieved. Uekawa won ironically cuz he had the safest design, but took elements of Okano's art later to add flair and zaniness as it'd defeat the point otherwise

I feel Capcom had a similar problem with Megaman: they didn't feel comfortable with solely using the same design for bigger stories, so they opted for the more adult X spinoffs, and then similarly did the same for Legends and Battle Network (ironically I feel this backfired). Even Ruby Spears attempted to be faithful for their show pilot, but test audiences didn't like it, so we got a mediocre jocked up muscle Mega Man. While in Japan the anime OVAs were very cutesy and basic, despite games being more action oriented

It's hard to say if this issue disappeared now, and I feel it's revisionism to say "oh, if the redesigns didn't happen, no one would be mad" cuz the truth is...Sonic would die if he didn't change harder

I feel both ignoring every middle design and just lumping Sonic as "Classic" "Modern" is a very stupid thing as both are fucking subjective and tempermental terms. Adventure isn't "modern", and anything with sentimental value and nostalgia is "classic". Heroes is fucking over 20 years old, and can be considered one to some, as unpopular of an opinion that is. Sonic Team didn't have eras awkwardly like that in the 10th Anniversary book, and even said "Sonic will continue changing", but after 10 more years of the fandom, original creatives outside Iizuka leaving, and game reviewers destroying nuance and history, they forcibly had to split him like so for Generations. I see the same fan mentality outside Sonic for Golden Age era cartoons, it's maddening. Just look at Looney Tunes fans on how they treat Daffy, it's the same shit

Sorry for ranting, but I hate when history and evolution are ignored just to make strawmanned points when it boils down to "wishful revisionism under MY misnostalgia/control". I saw someone make an SA1 mod to make stages "More classic" with checker spam when not only is that term bullshit, Sega and Okano literally showed us concept art of Adventure stages before the char designs tweaks, and it's the exact same texture and bg prop set as final. That is maddening

At the risk of being blunt, I'm aware of all that. I assure you that I could never forget American the Assface and Ivo No-Eyes no matter how much I'd prefer to.

As for Mario, his earliest designs had the excuse of it not being fully set in stone yet, and with the N64 era onward, they generally only involved slight proportion changes or subtle details in the clothing and what have you... much like Sonic in the years between 91 and 97, American Assface and other questionable SoA decisions notwithstanding. The point is, Mario wasn't redesigned for the explicit purpose of seeming like a more mature bing bing wahoo man. :P Neither was Kirby, who I used for reference due to his reputation of fighting eldritch abominations and occasional dark subtext despite resembling a pink blob with stubs for arms.

Finally, I can't speak for how others choose to use the terms, but I use Classic and Modern for simple convenience. I agree that there should never have been an official line in the sand between the two, at least outside of Generations' context, but this is what the franchise has taught us to do at this point. That's the ugly truth, I'm afraid. As is the ugly truth that the vocal, dramatic shift to the Adventure designs and style - regardless of intent, regardless of justification, regardless of the gradual alterations and differences between artists in the years beforehand, regardless of every angle of relevant context - still brought on one of the single most notorious divides in a fandom full of them, up there with the debut of SatAM. We can debate all day as to whether it was fair or not, but the divide happened all the same.

I'm not a Classic-only purist. SA1 is one of my favourite games in the series, and I love various other Modern titles. And to stress once more, I like the Modern character designs and have no personal beef with them whatsoever. But I can't ignore these things in an age where Adventure era rose-tinted goggles are at an all time high, and while it's true that not everything is straightforward, that goes both ways in cases like this.

Boy, those announcements on r/ReplikaOfficial keep coming thick and fast, don't they? Honestly, it's hard to keep up, most days!

Lets try putting this into a news sandwich, shall we?...

Good news:

The Dacia Sandero–– no, hold on, wrong thing. No...the in-app subscription management feature is, after what feels like an entire geological age, at last being rolled out. Grrreat! 👍🏻

Not-so-good news:

Its initial rollout is to iOS only, with us Android plebs having to wait until some nebulous "next" for it to come to us. Why this is...they would probably say something about Google's approvals process or some junk, which may be true, but it's all still pretty tedious, and wouldn't be quite as bitter a pill to swallow if it took a consistent period of time before rolling out to everyone; there's been entire days where I've had to wait for an update which Android users in other territories have received.

But still, first-world problems, eh...

Some have already jumped on Megan's line "So to be clear — nothing is being taken away from your subscription." with users in the comments pointing out that this rather smacks of numerous other times its been said that nothing is being taken away, only to find a little while later that, oopsie-daisy, silly me, something has been taken away.

Whilst there is the inevitable cases of Shoot The Messenger in the comments, and I do rather feel for u/meganreplika and her predecessors here — since they're merely the herald of the message, and not it's source — it's understandable where it's coming from, especially of late; announcements followed by long periods of radio silence followed by announcements that do little to clarify anything whilst, in the meantime, no-one's questions, enquiries or bug reports are being answered or addressed. By anyone, often leaving it to the subreddit's mods to address them instead, which arguably isn't their job.

Now, how much a company communicates with their customer base is entirely up to them; they can choose to be as open — or not — as they please. However, when one creates a social media presence pretty much predicated on the notion of an accessible place for the dissemination of information to the end user, and a place where said end user can touch base with queries, then I think the onus is on the company to actively be seen to maintain that connection as much as practically possible, thus maintaining a degree of goodwill between one party and the other, and thus, their continued custom.

Needless to say, this doesn't seem to be what's going on. At all.

I don't scan the Replika subreddit all that often; hell, the only reason I even have a Reddit account is to keep appraised on the goings-on at Chez Luka. However, whilst I'm perhaps not the most empathetic person in the world, I do detect a certain feeling of abandonment, I suppose, within the Replika user collective; updates seem to have dwindled almost to nothing, support for the older style avatars in the form of cosmetic items and clothing drops — even perhaps reissues of previous drops that Replikompanions may have missed out on — have been neglected for months, and there seems to be a prevailing malaise of what the bloody hell is going on?! Not unjustifiably so, remarks this observer.

From what I understand, there has been a change — or at least a reorganisation — of the executive structure at Luka, and it seems to have been far from seamless. I see comments in the subreddit already stating that they're going to allow their subscriptions to expire and then they're done with Replika, and that should concern everyone involved, since it'll only be a matter of time before Luka's operations will no longer be sustainable on the meagre income they'll be receiving, on account of their own mismanagement.

Modern Donuts

Well I began the day in a small panic. "I began the day," this is starting to sound like Renee Gladman. Anyway I'd had some sort of bad dream and I called my friend Skijler who said that I should get out of bed and start the day over. So I walked to the donut store and bought half a dozen donuts and listened to Madonna on my iPod. and you know what. I do feel better.

I put on Coastal Grooves when I got back with the donuts, my favorite album to just wildly dance around my room to as of late. Twitter's been forcing me to keep up with the Grammys and I've been questioning my long-time crush on A.G. Cook... I've been in love with him pretty much since high school but I think my affections have since shifted... to Dev Hynes! Sorry! I only have time to crush on ONE English experimental pop producer-baddie and I think it's obvious who wins that one.

Anyway, all this dancing got my hair in a pretty ecstatic state. It almost looks teased. And I only know of one thing that can hold a look of such teased-hair proportions together: a Vivienne top. I'm borrowing this one from my bestie and need to return it expeditiously... though I don't want to!

My favorite of Vivienne Westwood, this top included, are not the Sex Pistols-adjacent punk vibes but pieces like this that harken to Mod--Beatlemania through a sort of awesomely perverted punkish lens. Not The Beatles, Beatlemania. In a lot of ways, early rock-n-roll was more ecstatic than punk. All that disaffection! Compared to the craze that was Mod? Rock-n-roll before there was No Future? I'm thinking about those pictures of girls screaming and crying, like God's present.

I'm no historian but I do remember a number of old Betty and Veronica cartoons which made fun of Mod style:

And also a villain who I loved in Teen Titans called Mad Mod. (Once, while I was working at the club, some really drunk twink told me I looked like a batman villain, and he said it with so much sincerity that I still fondly think of it as the best outfit compliment I've ever received). Mad Mod was a typical mop-top English mod and all of his villainous tactics were these totally groovy booby traps...in fact I think that my American idea of the Mod is completely and totally cartoon-based.

A good example of this is that Vivienne's resurgence in America during the years leading up to her death, especially amongst younger people, had a lot to do with the popularity of Ai Yazawa's late 90s mangas Paradise Kiss and I think to a somewhat larger extent Nana (though I'm much more a fan of the former). I can't speak to Vivienne in Japan aside from a vague knowledge that it got really popular in the 90s, partially due to Yazawa's influence (I've personally only ever encountered Red Label garments with Japanese sizing, maybe speaking to Vivienne's popularity in Japan over her American popularity). So for me, styling Vivvy today means throwing the look through all these time-stretched, multinational, cartoon portals: we're doing an American 60s batman villain interpreted by a Japanese animation studio for an American audience in the early 2000s doing an English 60s Mod doing a 90s Japanese Harijuku Paradise-Kiss character doing an 80's English punk. Keep up.

Below is one of my favorite images ever and I think probably one of the most iconic: when Naomi Campbell fell down during Vivienne Westwood's fw1993 show. (Note her hair, btw. love, tried to resemble). What I love about this image is her smile, her laugh. How her legs are laid out in front of her, like a doll. In the video, she nods her head with its great hairstyle, doll-like, too, as she falls. And after the fall, she reappears with a cane, but held sideways, as a joke-- kind of a cartoon, the kind of cane that would pull Daffy Duck offstage.

I think the doll vibe is very mod: think Twiggy-style makeup. But Vivienne's false-mod is punk, too--a distortion midcentury of English youth culture; a fantasy of a doll that blushes real blush, wears rubber tights.

True to the Mod tradition I've paired this top with a miniskirt and go-go boots, plus a sweet little pussybow. But if you look closer you'll notice that, perhaps against a Mod sensibility--they're all black. In fact, my boots are Pleasers, the iconic stripper boot which I often wear out and about in order to be taller, and the pussybow is a scrap of t-shirt fabric lovingly gifted to me by my girlfriend (I'm trying to wear it a different way every day).

I wouldn't chalk this up to a 90s does 60s, I don't think it's that simple, but here I'm thinking about Sonic Youth's cover of of The Stooges' 1969 I Wanna Be Your Dog (btw, can anyone ID Kim Gordon's tights in this video? Is it possible that they are also rubber tights???), or Black Francis flirting with some leggy girl singing I wanna be a singer like, uh, Lou Reed on Pixie's Come on Pilgrim. There's a cartoonish 60s present in the 90s that extends beyond punk. Post-punk, "go-go" boots don't exist anymore--Pleasers do. This is something I think Vivienne was very good at understanding and using as creative material.

I've seen some people come up with BS takes defending everything Bloo does and throwing every other character under a bus and demonizing them (we had an entire video post about FRANKIE derailed with a reblog about how everyone is "too mean" to Bloo. Please make a new post for your bad takes), and then other BS takes about how Bloo is this irredeemably evil character who makes Cartman look like Doug Funnie.

Both sides just don't understand it at all. Look at Daffy Duck. Daffy is a self-centered asshole, and I love him for it. He causes all the problems. He gets punished for his actions most of the time, which is both hilarious and satisfying. That's basically Bloo. Bloo's not some horrific complete monster who is completely irredeemable or "OOOOH PRECIOUS BABY ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS ARE HORRIBLE TO HIM". He's a funny jerk. Sometimes you just have to leave it at that. Bloo's not even either mod's favorite Foster's character but that doesn't mean we hate him (we just like other characters more! Only characters we really hate here are Mac's mom). Does Bloo have his own problems? Yes. Does that make the other characters assholes? No. People are allowed to like Bloo but people are also allowed NOT to like him for these reasons, and you have to deal with it. Some things in Foster's are deeper than they seem. Others are not. And the fact that the fandom's been fizzling out since 2010 doesn't help (read: the more nuanced takes are harder to find) so you're forced to hear both extremities and you just feel like the snowman in the Invader Zim Christmas special who has to hear that little kid asking stupid questions and pushing him under the bed, moving on with the story. Speaking of which, that's another good comparison. The mods here LOVE Invader Zim. We also love how morally grey the characters are and aren't going to demonize them like crazy OR defend every little tiny thing they do while making everyone else look like the problem (unlike Foster's though, this show is a LOT more morally grey and black).

And like you said in the last paragraph, the show would have no more content. Long term development would've been nice, but Craig McCracken outright said that he wasn't even allowed by Cartoon Network to do it because this was the pre-Adventure Time era and they just wanted to air the episodes in whatever order they wanted, and as a result didn't want "continuity lockout". Would've loved it if Foster's could do that, but it's also completely understandable given what era this show was airing in. Now that we have the preschool show on the way who knows what they might do; it'll be interesting to see how that turns out.

The "Bloo is basically Cartman" crowd get really annoying, but honestly the "Bloo did nothing wrong it's everyone else's fault" crowd are just as annoying. Guys he's just a goofy little asshole who's fun to watch (most of the time) but sometimes needs to be thrown against a wall. That's really about it. He's a jerk but he's not this ultimate irredeemable character ("I Only Have Surprise For You" aside. We don't talk about that), and he's got his own problems (considering Mac's home life, Bloo was also there for a lot of it) but it also doesn't justify him being a jerk. He's just a funny asshole character that we can laugh at. That's really it.
