MotoGP and the KTM Situation
So...KTM's parent company, Pierer Mobility Group, is in a bit of a mess.
A $3 billion in the red kind of mess.
How did this happen? Well, the short answer is that Pierer Mobility Group and KTM expanded too fast, too quickly, and now their debt is catching up with them. As for the long story, well...
Stefan Pierer, an Austrian businessman, founded an investment company called Cross Industries (what is now Pierer Mobility Group) in 1987, and in 1992, he took over KTM Motorrad in his native Austria. In 1994, KTM launched the Duke line, which took the traditionally dirt-bike focused KTM brand into the road bike business for the first time.
Dirt bikes remained a key element of KTM's business - and racing dirt bikes in things like Motocross and the Dakar Rally is a huge part of KTM's identity - but the allure of road bikes is what we'll be focusing on for this story.
A series of adventure and supermoto bikes followed, before in 2003, KTM entered Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing for the first time. While Ducati entered into the 4-stroke 990cc top class that same year, KTM instead focused their efforts on the 2-stroke 125cc class, as well as the 250cc class from 2005 onwards.
They took their first win at the 2004 Malaysian Grand Prix when Casey Stoner won the 125cc during his only season on KTM machinery, followed by a championship challenge the very next year. Mika Kallio won at Estoril, the Sachsenring, Motegi, and Valencia, whilst teammate Gabor Talmacsi won at Mugello, Assen, and Qatar. Qatar and Valencia were 1-2 finishes for KTM, and ultimately, Kallio finished second in the 125cc standings while Talmacsi finished third. Julian Simon on a third bike would win in the wet at Donington Park and finish eighth, putting three KTMs in the top ten in 125s in 2005 - a very respectable showing in just their third season competing.
Kallio would again finish second in 125 in 2006, with three wins to his name, whilst in 250cc, Hiroshi Aoyama won at Turkey and Japan, finishing third in those standings.
Aoyama and Kallio would both compete in 250cc in 2007, with Aoyama winning at the Sachsenring and Malaysia, while Kallio won in the wet at Motegi and then again at the season finale in Valencia. Aoyama would finish sixth while Kallio was seventh.
2008 would mark a full barreled 250 effort with Aoyama and Kallio joined by returning third bike man Julian Simon. Kallio would perform well, winning at Jerez, a wet Shanghai, and at a dry Donington Park, but Aoyama and Simon would go winless. The 125cc effort had also atrophied by now, with the most notable result being some rookie called Marc Marquez taking a third place at Donington.
KTM's attention was fading by this point, and their road bike efforts turned from Grand Prix racing and towards their new RC 1190 superbike. Additionally, the X-Bow track car gave KTM an exciting new toy to play with.
Their Grand Prix efforts were winding down.
KTM only competed in the 125cc class in 2009, and with Marc Marquez only managing a single podium at Jerez, they decided not to continue for 2010.
Marc Marquez in 2010 would move to the Red Bull Ajo team riding a Derbi/Aprilia RSA-125 and would win 10 races to dominate the championship.
So yeah...it wasn't a rider problem, their bike just kinda sucked by that point.
Meanwhile, KTM continued to expand their company. In 1995, they acquired Husaberg AB, a manufacturer established to keep dirt bike production in Sweden after Husqvarna's parent company Cagiva moved their production to Varese, Italy. KTM would in 2003 move Husaberg production to Mattighofen, Austria, making the whole thing rather pointless. Next, in 2007, came ventures with Indian giant Bajaj, who began distributing KTMs in India in exchange for a 14.5% stake.
In 2011 a similar collaboration would begin with CFMoto in China, which in 2017, became a downright joint venture between them and KTM.
Then in 2013, Husqvarna - now in BMW's hands - was sold to the Pierer Mobility Group, who promptly merged it and Husaberg, so instead of being produced in Sweden or Italy, it was all now in Austria.
In 2012, KTM would reenter GP racing with the introduction of the 4-stroke 250cc Moto3 class. They'd win the championship with Sandro Cortese, while in 2013...they won everything. Maverick Vinales in first, Alex Rins in second, Luis Salom in third, and Alex Marquez in fourth were all on KTM RC250GPs.
Fifth place was Jonas Folger on a KTM-engined Kalex.
Complete and utter domination.
On the back of this, KTM planned to enter the top class for the first time. With a V4 engine, a steel trellis frame, and Red Bull sponsorship, KTM entered the RC16 in the 2016 Valencian GP ahead of a full debut in 2017.
Who rode the RC16 at Valencia? None other than Mika Kallio, the Finn returning to KTM as their test and development rider after stints with Ducati in MotoGP and Marc VDS in Moto2.
Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith would be their full-time riders for 2017 and 2018, with Pol scoring KTM's first podium at the 2018 Valencian GP - KTM sure does have a weird affinity with Valencia, eh?
2019 would mark two big changes: first is that Johann Zarco replaced Bradley Smith, second is that KTM gained a satellite team for the first time. Yup, after competing as Monster Energy Yamaha for ten years, Tech3 became Red Bull KTM Tech3, with Hafizh Syahrin and Miguel Oliveira riding for them.
Zarco would force his way out of KTM before the year was even over, forcing Kallio to fill in for him at the final six races, but other than that...KTM's 2019 was more of a building year. They collected some points while, in the background, KTM began to move away from the steel trellis, aluminum swingarm, and old school screamer engine.
The frame became a more typical steel/aluminum hybrid, the swingarm a radical carbon fiber, and the engine conformed to the now ubiquitous big bang firing order.
The results? Rookie Brad Binder wins the 2020 Czech Grand Prix in just his third start, while on the Tech3 bike, Miguel Oliveira wins at Styria and Portimao.
KTM also took the opportunity to buy out the struggling GasGas brand in 2019, giving Pierer Mobility Group its third brand.
KTM was winning in MotoGP, it was expanding its business, but it was also already signing its own death warrant.
With the purchase of GasGas, Pierer Mobility Group now had three different brands that were predominantly in the dirt bike business. They tried to position GasGas as the entry level brand, KTM in the middle, and the Husqvarna as a premium brand, sort of trying to be the General Motors of motorcycles, there's just two problems with that:
One: Bikes are so much more niche compared to cars.
Two: even in cars the multi-brand thing doesn't work so well, with GM killing off storied brands like Oldsmobile and Pontiac in recent memory, along with more recent ventures like Saturn and Hummer failing to carve out a niche.
Nevertheless, with COVID giving a lot of people a lot of time on their hands, KTM initially had very strong sales. Lots of people were trying out their motorcycles for the first time, and with KTM giving variety between dirt bikes, road bikes, and even teasing a return to the superbike market with the RC 990, maybe things would work out.
They did not.
KTM banked on the COVID bubble.
They spent money acquiring the likes of GasGas, Husqvarna, and now a 50.1% stake in MV Agusta as well, they banked on joint ventures with Bajaj and CFMoto giving them access to the eastern markets only to develop a reputation in India for being overpriced and having bad build quality. On top of this, KTM began the scummy business practice of hiding riding software behind a paywall, most notably with their cruise control.
(For no reason at all, I'm also going to point out that Stefan Pierer has a seat on the Mercedes-Benz supervisory board.)
The end result of all this? KTM sits on 265,000 unsold bikes. Unsold bikes which only meet Euro 5 emissions standards, meaning that when the Euro 5+ standards come into effect in March, KTM will not be able to sell those bikes in Europe, where, with 11.8% market share, KTM is the largest motorcycle manufacturer.
Furthermore, KTM was not able to pay its workers their December salaries until last Friday, the 27th. November salaries remain unpaid, and Christmas bonuses have been cut entirely.
300 jobs at KTM are expected to be cut in January.
So...with all this going on, there are some big, big question marks about whether KTM will be able to continue racing in MotoGP.
They have released a statement confirming they will race in 2025 and with KTM having already sending two of their three factory rally raid riders to Dakar - the third is out with a leg injury - that seems reasonably secure.
Beyond that? It's unclear.
It's unclear how much development KTM will be doing to stay competitive as well. Initial reports suggested that KTM has already paused development, but KTM disputes this.
Now, a recent Austrian report says that KTM plans to withdraw in 2026, citing contracts and not wanting the PR disaster of early termination. What does that mean.
Well, KTM is contracted with Dorna through 2026, the end of the current regulation cycle.
Brad Binder has two years left on his contract, while Acosta, Vinales, and Bastianini are all on multiyear deals - traditional wisdom in racing says that multiyear deals typically translate to 2 years + a 1 year optional extension.
Furthermore, an engine freeze is coming into MotoGP in 2026, which will reduce development costs.
So...I believe that this means that KTM will see out their contracts, racing through 2025 and 2026 with their current set of riders. 2025 is already budgeted and we know that's secure, while seeing out the 2026 season and leaving at the end of 2026 seems to match up with these Austrian reports.
This is still a developing story, so I may well be wrong here.
It's also important to remember that this is about more than racing, it's about the people. Many, many, many people work at KTM, both on the production bike side and on the race team. These people are going through a tough time right now with this KTM bankruptcy drama, and you have to hope things turn out well for them.
I'm not much of a KTM fan - I don't oppose them either, I suppose I'm more of a neutral then - but I'd hate to lose them in MotoGP. I'd hate even more to see people lose their jobs because the ownership chased unsustainable growth.
That COVID bubble has been vicious to the business world.

Ben Sulayem hands day-to-day running of F1 over to Tombazis | 2023 F1 season
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has handed the day-to-day running of Formula 1 over to Nikolas Tombazis, who was appointed as single-seater director last month. The move follows recent criticism of Ben Sulayem’s management of the governing body’s most successful series. F1 wrote to Ben Sulayem last month to strongly object to comments he made on social media regarding F1’s financial value. Soon afterwards the FIA was forced to respond to sexist comments Ben Sulayem had made 20 years before he became president, after they resurfaced in a newspaper report. An FIA spokesperson told RaceFans the transfer of operational responsibilities from Ben Sulayem to Tombazis was a planned development following its announcement last month that it had completed the introduction of its new management structure for F1. Ben Sulayem, who was elected president of the FIA in December 2021, will continue to give input into top-level decision-making and strategy. The day-to-day operation of F1 will be handled by Tombazis and his team. Tombazis joined the FIA in 2018 as its head of single-seater technical matters. Prior to that he was Ferrari’s chief designer. His team in charge of F1 include Steve Nielsen, who joined the FIA as sporting director last month, as well as directors responsible for technical, financial, strategic and operational matters. “The president’s manifesto clearly set out this plan before he was elected,” said an FIA spokesperson. “It pledged ‘the appointment of an FIA CEO to provide an integrated and aligned operation,’ as well as to ‘introduce a revised governance framework’ under ‘a leadership team focused on transparency, democracy, and growth’.” Ben Sulayem appointed Natalie Robyn as the FIA’s CEO last September. Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free Nielsen and Tombazis head up the FIA’s F1 team “These goals, as well as the announcement of the new structure of the Single-Seater Department, have been planned since the beginning of this presidency,” the spokesperson continued. “The FIA president has a wide remit that covers the breadth of global motor sport and mobility, and now that the structural reorganisation in F1 is complete this is a natural next step.” Last month Ben Sulayem indicated he intended to spend less time on F1 matters during his second year in charge of the FIA. “I should give more time to rallying,” said the former rally driver. “I have been dragged – and I’m being very straight and honest – I’ve been sucked into F1.” Ben Sulayem’s election as president came as F1 was engulfed in controversy over the conclusion to the 2021 world championship in Abu Dhabi. Its investigation into the handling of the race and the consequences arising from it lasted well into 2022. Other controversies which arose during 2022 included a long-running dispute over the wearing of jewellery by drivers, which brought Ben Sulayem into conflict with Lewis Hamilton and was regarded by some as being targeted against the seven-times world champion. Ben Sulayem was also involved in long-running negotiations over F1’s new engine rules for 2026 and Red Bull’s punishment for breaching the budget cap during the previous season. Auto mobiles  And Motor-Sports;                           The Formula One :
The Introduction of Cars:
Do you like cars? Cars are the four wheeled auto mobiles which enable us the facility of travelling from one place to another in a faster manner than the old days. As you all know during old days, people took a lot more time to travel from one place to another. You know why it happened. It is because of the lack of developed technology for an easier, much faster and efficient transportation of people and goods. As human beings improved their views and shaped up their technological innovations, they discovered the wheels which is as you all know in the shape of a circle. Gradually they invented Cars, the four wheeled vehicles. Cars came into the global use during the 20th century. More specifically, Cars came into use during the year 1886 when Carl Benz introduced the first four wheeled vehicle. The car which was introduced by Carl Benz was the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. Cars became widely available in the early 20th century. But most of the cars during that time were not accessible for the public due to their ingenuity and unawareness. The first cars accessible to the masses was the 1908 Model T, an American car manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Cars were rapidly adopted in the US, where they replaced animal-drawn carriages and carts, but took much longer to be accepted in Western Europe and other parts of the world. Gradually cars became common on the streets. And this demand for cars gave the auto mobile manufacturers new challenge to bring some kind of new elements into their cars. As you all know, now a days cars have many facilities like AC, Multimedia system, parking sensors and so on.. Cars even have autonomous systems using artificial intelligence in which the car drives by itself using AI.
The Introduction Of Motor Sports:
As the usual sports events motor sports is the sports event using motor vehicles that is cars and bikes. In the event of car racing the competitors race from one starting point to a finishing point. The winner of the game is the ones with the lowest time taken to finish the race. In the case of four wheeled motor sports, the item is globally governed by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The history of motor sport is from 1894 when a French newspaper organised a race from Paris to Rouen and back, starting city to city racing. In 1900, the Gordon Bennett Cup was established. But gradually the closed circuit racing transformed to greater times and racing in public roads were banned.
Aspendale Racecourse in Australia in 1906 was the first dedicated motor racing track in the world. Thereafter more and more racing events became popular and different types of racing Grand Prix and championships came into being.
Different Types Of Racing sports:
Racing sports are of many types. And each types of racing are just as better as each other and are celebrated grandly by the racing manias (including me). Each racing events pumps dopamine and adrenaline to the nerves of racing hearted people, as their super heroes showcase their talent on the racing track. These racing events are thoroughly enjoyed by both the competitors and audience.
Different types of Racing Events are:
The Formula Racing:
The Formula One
The Formula E
Indy Car Series
The Dakar Rally
There are many other racing series like stock car, sports car, touring car and off road or Rally racing. Now Here we discuss about the formula one.
The Formula One or F1
Tumblr media
As you all Know the first and the most popular racing sport is the Formula One (also known as Formula 1 or F1) is the highest class of international auto racing for single-seater racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The series is owned by Liberty Media, an American mass media company controlled by its founder and chairman John C. Malone, through its wholly owned subsidiary, the Formula One Group. The World Drivers' Championship, which became the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1981, has been one of the premier forms of racing around the world since its inaugural season in 1950.The word "formula" in the name refers to the set of rules to which all participants' cars must conform in order to participate in the game. A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix. The word Grand Prix is the native of France which means ‘great or grand prices’.These GP races take place on the closed F1 circuits  all over the world. The cars used in the race are the fastest regulated road-course racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamic downforce. But in the year 2017 the cars underwent major changes,
allowing wider front and rear wings, and wider tyres resulting in peak cornering forces and top speeds of up to approximately 350km/h (215mph).  As of 2019 the hybrid engines are limited in performance to a maximum of 15,000 rpm; the cars are very dependent on electronics and aerodynamics, suspension and tyres. Traction control and other driving aids have been banned since 2008. You should never think that arranging and managing this mega grand event is cheap, With the annual cost of running a mid-tier team—designing, building, and maintaining cars, pay, transport—being US$120 million, its financial and political battles are widely reported. Its high profile and popularity have created a major merchandising environment, which has resulted in large investments from sponsors. On 23 January 2017 Liberty Media confirmed the completion of the acquisition of Delta Topco, the company that controls Formula One, from private-equity firm CVC Capital Partners for $8 billion, and the coordinators and other workers including everyone who contribute their part including the audience who gets to the gallery to support their star plays an important part in the success of the game.
Point system in F1
Coming to the point system in the race F1 there are separate points for the constructors (the companies who make cars for their own drivers) and the drivers of companies in which they race for. The rules for getting specific points is that A driver must finish within the top ten to receive a point for setting the fastest lap of the race. In the event that the driver who set the fastest lap finishes outside of the top ten then the point for fastest lap will not be awarded for that race.
The point table is given below:
          1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th FL*
25  18   15  12   10  8    6    4    2    1      1
(*FL means Fastest Lap)
       The current table top of this season 2020 is Lewis Hamilton with 205 points and he is racing for Mercedes Benz, the German automotive company.
The Drivers point table* is given below:
Tumblr media
The constructors point table* is given here:

(*the values of the points may change by the next race)
And here I conclude my article and hope You enjoyed the ride to it.

Maximum Results for Maximum Efforts (A Table Tennis Review - Pt. I)
When you think of a sport that uses two small paddles to pass around a small white ball across a wide green table with a short net in the middle, you would think of either ping pong or table tennis. However, according to Coach EmRatThich from the Ping Sunday (2019a), up until 2011, they were essentially the same thing – they could be interchanged for each other, they were played the same way, they used the same equipment. In fact, ping pong was just a trademarked name for table tennis in 1901.
However, when the new decade of the 2000s started, they soon developed significant differences. Coach EmRatThich enumerated their differences in his blog that aimed to differentiate the two sports, and some of those differences were the following:
Tumblr media
[table of differences taken from Ping Sunday]
Aside from that, ping pong and table tennis also differ in the equipment they use, in their rules, in the method of scoring, in their world championships, and in the playing style utilized by their players. Regardless, they are still sports that people from around the world give importance to.
And in this blog post, we will be talking about the Men’s Singles Table Tennis Final Match at the 2016 Rio Olympics. But before that, we shall talk about table tennis’ court dimensions, equipment, basic skills, technical and tactical skills, rules of the game, and method of officiating.

Rio Olympics’ Men’s Singles Table Tennis Final Match was played at the Pavilion 3 of the Riocentro, which is an exhibition and convention center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Wikimedia, 2021). There, the sport’s table courts were situated.
In the Britannica article for table tennis, written by Victor Barna (2019), the sport is played on a rectangular table with a surface that is 2’6” (76cm) above the ground and a surface measurement of 9 feet by 5 feet (2.7 meters by 1.5 meters). The net that stands 6 inches (15.25cm) in the middle spans 6 feet (1.8 meters) long across the table.

Equipment
Generally, table tennis only requires the rackets/paddles, the ball, and a table. However, the rackets, specifically, have parts that can and should be customized to fit the player’s preferences in a non-casual game. And according to the Chinese method of coaching, the minimum requirements for non-casual table tennis are the blade, the rubber, clothing and shoes, and glue for the rubbers.
As stated in the equipment page by Coach EmRatThich (2019b), the racket is made of the blade and rubber. The blade is basically the bare wood frame of the racket – it makes up 80% of a player’s playing style because this is the deciding factor of their moves and skills, and whether or not they will perform well, which is why the blade should be chosen fully according to the player’s preferences. The remaining 20% is the rubber, and this is the part of the racket on either side of the blade that adds the speed and spin to the ball. Since the rubbers are in different colors, one racket should not have two rubbers of the same color. Together, the blade and the rubber work hand in hand together in order to provide the player their best performance.
The next equipment is the ball, and it should measure at least 40mm in diameter and 2.7g in weight, and it can be either white-colored or orange-colored. Following that is the table, and it was already discussed in the previous section for the court dimensions. After the table are the clothes and shoes, and they are important equipment because they aid the player’s mobility – too tight clothes will restrict the player’s movement and bad shoes will hinder them from moving as fast as they want to. The clothes also serve as the representation for the player’s identity, especially if they are playing for a team. The last important equipment is the glue for the rubber which decides the amount of spin and renders the high-quality consistency of the rubber’s performance. Many players glue and reglue often during matches, so it is an important equipment to have at all times if a high-quality performance needs to be maintained.

Basic Skills
According to the Ping Pong Ruler (2020a), the basic skills of table tennis comprise only of three (3) things: having a good stance and footwork, holding the paddle properly, and knowing the basic table tennis strokes.
In table tennis, having a good stance and footwork is crucial to a player’s performance because they provide the support that the player needs in order to move fast and hit accurately. Granted that the stance varies with the type of situation that the player is in, the right stance should still be observed all throughout because it makes the player balanced and stabilized. On the other hand, good footwork provides the player the ability to move how ever they deem fit and do that quickly in accordance to their reaction time.
Holding the paddle properly is also an important fundamental skill because it basically dictates the quality of the performance (2020b). There are many types of grips that a player can utilize, and though they each have their own pros and cons, it is important to choose the right grip and to know how to handle the paddle properly in order to maintain control and accuracy in the play and to deliver split-second point-saving decisions during the game.
Lastly, knowing the basic table tennis strokes is “paramount to get the technical basics correct…they are the foundations that can be built upon as a player improves” (Larcombe, 2012).
Technical Skills
Like in every other sport, the technical skills of table tennis are largely presented through the strokes that are done by the players. Based on the Chinese coaching, which was stated in the article by Coach EmRatThich (2018), there are 10 fundamental technical skills in table tennis, that which are the following:
1. Forehand drive technique – helps the player learn the feeling of the ball which advances improvement;
2. Backhand topspin close to the table – helps the player understand how to use their wrist and to relax, and also teach them the right timing of acceleration and the correct grip;
3. Forehand push & backhand push – helps the player become used to and predict accurately the timing to hit the ball coming towards them;
4. Forehand flick – an attacking stroke that teaches the players aggression when on the offensive;
5. Backhand flick – used to return all the topspin or sidespin short serves;
6. Backhand loop the underspin ball – helps the players improve on the usage of their lower body parts which consequently improves the quality of their play;
7. Forehand attack the semi-long ball – helps the players learn how to attack semi-long balls that their opponents may resort to as an attack after a serve;
8. Learn Forehand fast serve – an indispensable skill that can put opponents under pressure, reduces the quality of the opponent’s service return, and other advantages;
9. Forehand pendulum serve – one of the best serves in table tennis because it allows the players to add many spin variations; and
10. Backhand side-spin serve – gives the player the control of the placement and the ability to reduce the pace of the game, which presents the chance of changing the outcome of the match.
Tactical Skills
Table tennis not only requires technical skills but also tactical skills in playing. While the technical skills provide the concrete physical support, the tactical skills provide the mental and situational support that a player needs in order to actually win. In his article about table tennis tactical skills, Ben Larcombe (Tactical Training for Table Tennis, 2015) enumerated some (though not limited to) general tactics that a player can use to specify, improve and win with their play:
Playing into their crossover point (playing elbow);
Using wide angles;
Giving them deep heavy backspin digs;
Keep everything tight and short so they cannot attack;
Always trying to attack (get in) first;
Varying your serves;
Keeping the ball away from their strongest side (usually forehand);
Adding float balls as a variation;
Playing short to their forehand corner and then deep to their backhand corner (or vice versa);
Staying very close to the table; and
Adding sidespin to your shots (hooks, fades, sidespin pushes etc.).

Rules of Table Tennis
In order to make the matches fair and equal, rules are implemented handsomely. The following rules to be mentioned were taken from PongFit (Official Rules of Table Tennis, n.d.) which were summarized from the rules that came from USA Table Tennis:
1. GAMES ARE PLAYED TO 11 POINTS;
2. ALTERNATE SERVES EVERY TWO POINTS;
3. TOSS THE BALL STRAIGHT UP WHEN SERVING;
4. THE SERVE CAN LAND ANYWHERE IN SINGLES;
5. DOUBLES SERVES MUST GO RIGHT COURT TO RIGHT COURT;
6. A SERVE THAT TOUCHES THE NET ON THE WAY OVER IS A “LET”;
7. ALTERNATE HITTING IN A DOUBLES RALLY;
8. VOLLEYS ARE NOT ALLOWED;
9. IF YOUR HIT BOUNCES BACK OVER THE NET BY ITSELF, IT IS YOUR POINT;
10. TOUCHING THE BALL WITH YOUR PADDLE HAND IS ALLOWED;
11. YOU MAY NOT TOUCH THE TABLE WITH YOUR NON-PADDLE HAND;
12. AN “EDGE” BALL BOUNCING OFF THE HORIZONTAL TABLE TOP SURFACE IS GOOD; and
13. HONOR SYSTEM APPLIES TO DISAGREEMENTS.

Who will officiate the sport? And how do they do it?
There is a method of officiating table tennis which ensures that the conduct of the sport is maintained to be fair and equal, and that method banks widely on the officials: the referees and the umpires.
In a nutshell, the difference between both is that the “referees control the conduct of tournaments, and umpires control the conduct of matches” (Table Tennis Queensland, n.d.). Granted that both officials are important, there is still a significant difference between them aside from what was previously mentioned.
According to Martin Hughes (Officials in Table Tennis, n.d.), the referees have the overall power over table tennis games, and they supervise the umpires during matches. The umpires, on the other hand, have their powers concentrated on individual matches rather than the tournament as a whole, which basically makes them the “people on the ground.”

Last year super bowl 2021
Tumblr media
#Last year super bowl 2021 series#
Viewer interest in the Super Bowl continues to be strong. Strong creative plays an important role in helping brands make the most of this super-sized opportunity. According to Kantar research, the 2021 Super Bowl ads delivered an average return on investment (ROI) of $4.60 per dollar spent, with ads for Mountain Dew, Verizon, T-Mobile, and General Motors achieving the best results. As a result, Super Bowl ads consistently deliver strong return on investment. Kantar's Sports MONITOR’s fan insight service found that the commercials were the third-most popular aspect of watching the big game, ahead of even the halftime show. The reported average 30 second average unit cost for this year’s game represents a 6% increase over the average price paid for a 30-second commercial in 2021, and a 10% increase from five years ago.īrands make this investment for good reason. With NBC, the exclusive broadcasting network of Super Bowl LVI, selling spots at a reported record high price of $6.5 million per 30 seconds of airtime, up from $5.5 million last year, revenue is forecasted to surpass last year’s total.
#Last year super bowl 2021 series#
Twice, the Chiefs were penalized for pass interference on the drive that was capped by a Brady to Antonio Brown 1-yard TD pass right before the break.Super Bowl LV generated $434.5 million of in-game ad revenue, higher than the World Series and NBA finals and second only to the Olympic Games according to an analysis by Kantar. KC was penalized early and often, with players on defense being nailed for holding. Instead, Brady hit Gronkowski with a TD pass and Tampa Bay was up by 11. The second one - encroachment - took a 40-yard field goal off the scoreboard that would have put the Bucs up by 7. The first one - defensive holding - wiped out an interception by cornerback Tyrann Mathieu. The Chiefs found themselves penalized often in the first half - a Super Bowl-record 95 yards in one half - but none hurt more than two on the TD drive that saw Tampa Bay take that 14-3 lead. Mahomes passed the Chiefs down the field into the red zone before the drive ended on a fourth down play that saw the KC quarterback running around to try to find an open receiver and somehow throwing a 30-yard pass while parallel to the ground that was deflected by a Tampa Bay defender.Įven the Chiefs' final drive ended with an interception in the end zone with 1:33 left. Perhaps no series or play summed up Mahomes' tough night more than one early in the fourth quarter as the Chiefs mounted what would turn out to be their last gasp at a rally. The Bucs played their safeties deep to keep KC's play-makers from making big plays and their rushing defense remained solid. Mahomes, who was under pressure much of the game and apparently hampered by a turf toe injury, did not reach100 yards passing until late in the third quarter. Unfortunately for long-suffering Tampa Bay fans, the virus curtailed attendance at the stadium to 22,000, including 7,500 vaccinated health-care workers. It was the Bucs' second Super Bowl victory, made sweeter by getting the win at Raymond James Stadium, the first team ever to play in the Super Bowl on its home field. More: Bucs in the Super Bowl gives Tampa Bay three teams playing for championships in five months Still on top: Tom Brady still takes seventh title as Buccaneers rip Chiefs in Super Bowl 55ĥ5 facts about the Super Bowl: From the name to the coin they flip With a 43-year-old quarterback leading a team that had not made the playoffs since 2007 to an upset victory against the defending champions.Īgeless Tom Brady passed for three touchdowns, the Tampa Bay defense shut down Patrick Mahomes and the prolific Kansas City offense and the Buccaneers defeated the Chiefs 31-9 Sunday night in Super Bowl LV. A season marked by the coronavirus pandemic and the NFL overcoming improbable odds to complete its schedule could only have ended one way.

It is generally sold in rolls and is applied onto a wall using wallpaper paste. Wallpapers can come simple as "lining paper" (so that it is painted or used to help hide choppy surfaces and minor wall defects accordingly giving a greater surface), textured (such as Anaglypta), with a daily repeating pattern design, or, a lot much less in general today, with a unmarried non-repeating large design carried over a group of sheets. The smallest rectangle that can be tiled to form the whole sample is called the sample repeat.

The start of Western Illinois’ NCAA tournament run in Year 20, continued
Tumblr media
We pick up with the Leathernecks facing No. 5 Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA tournament in our College Hoops 2K8 sim.
Welcome back to our simulated dynasty with the Western Illinois Leathernecks in College Hoops 2K8. You can find a full explanation of this project + spoiler-free links to previous seasons here. Check out the introduction to this series from early April for full context. As a reminder, I simulate every game in this series (even the ones we watch on Twitch) and only handle the recruiting and coaching strategies.
We pick up with Western Illinois in the first round of the 2027 NCAA tournament. Here’s a recap of everything that has happened so far this season:
Western Illinois entered the season seeking redemption after losing to Cal in the first round of the NCAA tournament last year. We began the new season rated as a 96 overall with three new starters. We went 3-6 against a difficult non-conference schedule before sweeping the Summit League and again capturing the conference tournament championship.
We enter the tournament as a No. 12 seed. Our opponent in the first round is No. 5 seed Minnesota.
We recruited for one scholarship and are in position to land five-star JUCO shooting guard Edwin Wolfe in the spring.
READ: Western Illinois, Year 20, 2026-2027
Here’s a look at our roster heading into the 2027 NCAA tournament:
Tumblr media
Not going to lie, there’s some real pressure heading into this tournament run in my 20th season as head coach at Western Illinois. We saw our season end in the Elite Eight in Year 16, Year 17, and Year 18. We lost in the first round last season. While I already have a strong case as the greatest mid-major coach in college basketball history, we all know this is a “what have you done for me lately” culture. It will be so hard to face the fanbase if we bow out early again.
Unfortunately, our shaky non-conference slate means we got a raw deal by the selection committee. It’s going to be a tough road through the bracket for us as a No. 12 seed, and it starts against a talented Minnesota team. Both teams enter the game rated as a 98 overall.
Tumblr media
Minnesota is real good — you can check out the Golden Gophers’ roster here. Their senior shooting guard Carlos Klatsky is rated as a 95 overall — only four players are rated higher entering the tournament — and he’s matched up against our redshirt freshman Mathew Alloway. Their front court is stacked. Their five best players are either juniors or seniors. I am expecting this to be tough as hell.
The one thing giving me confidence is how we performed in the regular season against No. 1 Louisville in a game we watched together on Twitch. We gave the Cards all they could handle in a true road game before losing in the end. I love our inside-outside combination with senior small forward Wilky Henry and junior power forward Allan Cunningham. I trust our guards more than I did last year. While we have struggled in quick sim games, the pieces on this squad fit together better when we watch full games together on Twitch, I think. We need to take care of the ball, dominate the glass, and hopefully get a stellar performance from Henry as our go-to option on the perimeter.
We streamed this game on Twitch on Sunday night. As always, I’m not controlling Western Illinois; we’re watching a simulated game played by the computer. I’m not playing any of the games in this series, I only do the recruiting and set the coaching strategies. We did do something new this year, though: for the first time, I’m allowing myself to make in-game substitutions. Why not? There’s too much pressure to let poor rotation choices cost us.
The game should begin when you press play. Let’s go!

Win, 89-72! We’re onto the round of 32 where we will face No. 4 seed Ole Miss.
“SECOND HALF TEAM” has become a rallying cry for our Leathernecks during the Twitch chat, and it paid off once again. Thank the heavens, because that first half was tense. Our defense looked good, but Minnesota was still matching baskets with us the entire way. We couldn’t get anything going from three-point range early. I was wondering who was going to step up to be the hero, but instead the whole team pretty much raised its level of play in the second half.
A few shout-outs:
Wilky Henry was outstanding — he was up to 24 points on the night when we pulled the starters with about five minutes remaining. Henry didn’t do anything in our first round tournament loss to Cal last year (7 points in 33 minutes), so it was great to see him splashing threes and using his size (6’8, 240+ pounds) to bully people at the rim. That is exactly the type of performance we need out of him to keep winning.
Allan Cunningham is simply an all-time Stream Team performer. Dude is so big (6’11, 290 pounds) but still so graceful, and has three-point touch to match. For all the praise we give Ham — read our beat writer Matthew Morrow on Cunningham coming into the season — we often overlook his passing ability. Not anymore: Ham was dropping dimes like a vintage Chris Webber in this one, beating constant double-teams in the second half by kicking out to open shooters. Beautiful stuff.
Our center Pat Giddens has been generally maligned by the fanbase for being too short (6’9) and too overweight (close to 300 pounds), but he’s also the highest rated junior in the NCAA tournament. I was waiting for his production to match his ratings, and it finally happened. Giddens looks formidable offensively and held his own protecting the rim. Good stuff — we need more of that is we want to keep winning.
Reader Abby blessed us with clips from the win. My favorites: this three-pointer from Silky Wilky:

Manual subs! Featuring a Cunningham steal and finish:

Nice block by backup center Kevin Brazzle + a knockdown jumper from freshman guard Mathew Alloway:

Bring on Ole Miss.
No. 12 Western Illinois vs. No. 4 Ole Miss, round of 32, 2027 NCAA tournament
Another tough matchup for our Leathernecks. Ole Miss enters the game as a 99 overall, which is one point higher than us. They have five players rated in the 90s, though most of their talent is in the backcourt and on the wing rather than in the front court. Here’s a look at the roster:
Tumblr media
We need Cunningham and Giddens to eat inside. Waiting for us in the Sweet 16 would be a matchup with top-seeded Dayton, who are led by junior big man Matt Boswell, the player we created for the first-ever winner of our bracket contest. That would be such a fun game.
We also streamed this game on Twitch on Sunday night. Again: we’re watching a simulated game, I’m not controlling the teams. The game should start when you press play.
LET’S GO!

Win, 116-85! We’re going to the Sweet 16! Here are the tempo-free team stats from @akulawolf:
@SBN_Ricky not sure it's possible to be much better than this offensively pic.twitter.com/zRvek6XJfz
— Steven (@akulawolf) August 17, 2020
We just witnessed the best NCAA tournament performance in program history. Wilky Henry, have yourself a day!
Here’s what I wrote about Henry at the start of the season: “Henry needs to be a superstar this year for this team to play up to its potential.” It happened in an epic way, and we’re going to the Sweet 16 because of it. Henry was absolutely unconscious, pouring in 46 points on 10-of-16 shooting from three-point range. He shattered the program’s previous tournament scoring record of 34 points set by Kim Kone in Year 17.
Honestly, it felt like he could have scored 60 easily. We pulled the starters with 9:35 seconds left as we were up 22 points. I tried to manually sub Henry back in to get 50, but the game took him out right away. LOL. Still an unreal performance either way.
Seriously, man: 46 points on 27 shots in 26 minutes. We might never see a performance like that again in Leathernecks history. Let’s go the clips from reader Abby, starting with a three and then a dunk from Wilky:
twitch_clip
More Wilky:

Nice pass from Wilky to point guard Tron Whaley:

Silky Wilky forever. We’re going to need him to keep going, because we’re moving onto the Sweet 16 to face No. 1 seed Dayton.
No. 12 Western Illinois vs. No. 1 Dayton, Sweet 16, 2027 NCAA tournament
Dayton enters the game as a 97 overall — we’re a 98 overall. This is how the two teams matchup:
Tumblr media
Here’s a look at Dayton’s roster led by one-time bracket contest winner, studio host, and created baller Matt Boswell. This is going to be an all-out battle. And we’re going to watch the simulated game together on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Twitch. Please join us.
Here’s how to watch Western Illinois vs. Dayton in the Sweet 16:
Game: No. 12 seed Western Illinois vs. No. 1 seed Dayton, Sweet 16, 2027 NCAA tournament
How to watch: My Twitch channel
Date: Tuesday, Aug. 18
Tip-off time: 8:30 p.m. ET // 7:30 p.m. CT. The stream will start a little earlier.
If we win: Elite Eight game against the winner of No. 2 Indiana vs. No. 6 Pitt will follow immediately after.
Put Lakers vs. Blazers on one screen and the Leathernecks on the other. This is going to be a blast. A few links before I get out of here:
Join the Leathernecks Reddit for continued discussion on the team. We also have a fan-started Twitter account (with spoilers of Twitch streams before the recap goes out) and Instagram page you can follow.
Reader Evan’s Leathernecks recruiting database now includes size progression over time. He wrote about it on Reddit, but it’s wild seeing some of these changes. For example: Wilky Henry has gained three inches and 43 pounds since he committed. I hope no one gives him a PED test before the Sweet 16.
We had 130 entries in the bracket contest this year. Hell yeah. Check out Sean’s Blog Team app for the current standings, which works on desktop and mobile.
Reader Thanh Nguyen wrote a fan-fiction e-book on the first eight seasons of Ricky Charisma at Western Illinois.

The Women’s Events
W70s.  Ann Manley (AVN) has won World and British Opens but only one National.  Her opponent in the final was Rebecca Czuczman (KNT) who has seven Nationals, but it was Manley who took the match in five.
W60s.  Yorkshire’s Julie Field is a four-time World Champion as well as having seven National titles.  In a group with many champions she is probably on top.  Wales No 1 and former National Champion Sian Johnson is renowned for her skilful play.  The Wales star produced a beautiful game of high deep squash and kept Field at bay.
W55s.  Mandy Akin (KNT) is a seven-time champion and was favourite in the match against Hilary Kenyon.  But it was a real battle with some great rallies.  Kenyon edged the third 12/10 to go 2/1 up but Akin’s renowned athleticism got her through the next two for a five-game victory.
W50s.  There are not many 3/0 matches like this final.  Two very accomplished players although Andrea Sanatamaria (YKS) is the one with higher profile, Nicky Fowler (CHS) is very good indeed, and a three-time champion.  The scores say it all.  12/10, 13/11, 1513.  A great contest and Andrea’s fourth National.
W45s.  A battle of the Rachels!  Defending Champion Rachel Woodward (NOT) was slight favourite but Rachel Calver (LEC) had other ideas and took the first two.  She has one National title and been close a few times.  Woodward struck back and took the next 11/9.  It was Calver who broke through in the fifth and hung on to take her second National.
W40s.  Lauren Briggs (ESX) has every major title in the Masters game and there was no stopping her here.  Kate Bradshaw (CBE) is a fine player but had no way of upsetting the former World top 20 player.  3/0 to Briggs.  Her sixth National title in six outings.
W35s.  This evnet also had an exceptional player in the form of Sarah Campion (CHS) formerly Kippax.  A top player on the tour she was a class apart.  In the final the talented Sarah-Jane Neller (ESX) gave her all and played some fine squash but there was only going to be one winner and Campion stormed through 3/0 to take the title.
The Men’s Events
M75s.  After his shock defeat of four-time World Champion Adrian Wright (YKS) yesterday Ken Johnson (NLD) was ready for British Open Champion Mike Clemson (YKS).  In a match that swung from one to the other, Johnson’s strong hitting overcame Clemson’s mobility.  3/2.  A first National title for Johnson.
M70s.  Ian Graham (SSX) and Larry Grover (HPH) both removed a top seed yesterday.  In an excellent contest it moved back and forth.  Grover went 2/1 up but Graham, slightly quicker, began to make inroads and took the next two to win 3/2 and get his second National title.
M65s.  The top two seeds and the top two in the world in this age group deservedly met in the final.  Mark Cowley (MDX) took the first but Steve Johnson (LNH) hit back to take the second 12/10.  There was a lot for the referee to do in this match as the players tried to dominate the court, with both players on the floor several times.  There was also some sublime squash but it was Johnson who found his way through 12/10 in the fourth.
M60s.  The two 3/4 seeds met in the final and in a match with some great squash, fine movement and good sportsmanship.  Allen Barwise (LNH) the 2017 Champion took the first 14/12 but Neil Harrison (DCL) struck back and managed to just keep ahead.  There was only the odd points in it, but Harrison took the Championship to remedy losses when in the Over 45s!
M55s.  After his heroics finally beating his nemesis Eamonn Price yesterday, Alex Betts (MDX) had it all to do again against top seed Jon Foster (HPH) who had moved through the tournament untroubled.  Betts produced some great squash in his usual all-action style but Foster was always in charge.  3/0 and a first National title for him.
M50s.  Durham & Cleveland produced three of the four semi finalists and both finalists.  Yawar Abass and Andy Cross have played each other a fair amount and Abass is ahead on their head to heads.  So, it proved here with Abass able to move Cross around the court and play into the gaps. A great result for Cross to get to the final in a very competitive group.  A sixth National title for Abass.
M45s.  2019 Champion Paul Boyle (BUX) played very well again to get to the final but Nick Wall (YKS) was a different proposition and he had the class to always be ahead and make Boyle try and catch up.  A terrific game of squash, though as Wall clinched the second and third games 11/9 for the title.
M40s.  Scotland star Stuart Ayton had notched up some great wins to reach the final including the longest match of the week, well over and hour.  He met former Circuit pro Darren Lewis (LEC) in the final who took a vital first game 16/14.  Ayton took the third but couldn’t do more as Lewis ran out in four competitive games for a title to go with his 35s one in 2015.
M35s.  What a match!  The best two players produced an absolute cracker of a contest that showed Squash at its very best.  Fantastic hitting, incredible movement and great sportsmanship. It was a pleasure to watch two such great athletes.  Army Champion Sam Miller (WKS) took the first but Wimbledon pro Phil Rushworth (SRY) struck back to level.  He got to 10/7 in the third but Miller moved into overdrive to clinch it 12/10 saving four game points.  The fourth continued point for point with both players hurtling round the court to cover the most deft drops and powerful drives.  Miller took it 11/9.  A truly great match.
The presentations were made by Keir Worth, CEO of England Squash and Mark Jeffery a Board Member of England Squash.  Thanks were given to the Nationals sponsors AJ Bell, Nottingham Squash Club for being terrific hosts, especially Manager Nick Hargreaves and his bar and catering staff.  Also to the Referees, the assistance of all tournament staff, Brian Brock the Events Manager in particular, and Roz Featherstone who helped on the tournament desk all week.

Serena Williams beats Barbora Strycova to reach Wimbledon final

Serena Williams has reached a Grand Slam final for the 13th consecutive year
Wimbledon 2019 on the BBC Venue:All England ClubDates:1-14 July Coverage:Live across BBC TV, radio and online with extensive coverage on BBC iPlayer, Red Button, Connected TVs and mobile app. Full details
Serena Williams made light work of Barbora Strycova to reach the Wimbledon final and stand one win away from a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.
The American was just too powerful for the Czech in a 6-1 6-2 win that set up a final against Romania’s Simona Halep.
Williams, chasing an eighth singles title here, dominated throughout against Strycova, who at 33 was the oldest Grand Slam semi-final debutant.
The American, 37, wrapped up victory with just 59 minutes on the clock.
“It feels good to be back in the final,” said Williams, who was runner-up to Angelique Kerber last year and will be appearing in the grass-court showpiece for an 11th time on Saturday.

Williams proves too much for debutant Strycova
Williams is aiming to draw level with Australian Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles title and also win her first major title since becoming a mum in September 2017.
In Strycova, she was facing a player she had met three times before without dropping a set.
And she was not going to spoil that record here, establishing breaks in the fourth and sixth games before taking the set with her 44th ace of the championships.
While Williams is a firm favourite on Centre Court, the crowd wanted to see more of a match and cheered every half chance, net cord or winner that went Strycova’s way.
But despite the support, the world number 54 seemed lost in the occasion and unable to turn to the serve-and-volley game that had served her so well in the dismantling of British number one Johanna Konta in the quarter-finals.
She raised her arms ironically in celebration at winning a rare long rally for 0-15 when Williams was serving for the match but soon found herself shaking hands at the net after the American delivered a forehand winner on her first match point.
Williams sets yet another record
Williams is now into a Grand Slam final for the 13th consecutive year – and that includes being on maternity leave during that time.
Her season has been disrupted by injuries and illness and this is the first major final she will contest this year, having lost in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January and the third round at the French Open.
“It’s good, especially after my year,” she said.
“I just needed some matches. I know I’m improving and I just needed to feel good and then I can do what I do best which is play tennis.”
She also becomes the oldest Grand Slam women’s finalist in the Open era and remains as motivated as ever.
“I love what I do, I wake up every morning and I get to be fit and play sport and play in front of crowds like here at Wimbledon – not everyone can do that,” she said.
“I’m still pretty good at what I do and it’s always an amazing experience.”
Williams won the most recent of her Grand Slam titles at the 2017 Australian Open when she was eight weeks pregnant.
She returned to the Tour in March 2018, saying she had “almost died” giving birth to her daughter, and has reached three Grand Slam finals since.
Having lost in last year’s Wimbledon and US Open finals, she will now hope it will be third time lucky on Saturday (14:00 BST).
Analysis
Nine-time Wimbledon singles champion Martina Navratilova on BBC TV:“The crowd didn’t necessarily want Serena to lose. They just wanted to see more of her. Strycova wasn’t able to handle the power. How quickly was Serena getting on those balls though? She did her homework and it paid off. She was firing on all cylinders.”
Two-time Grand Slam champion Tracy Austin on BBC TV:“Strycova never felt like she had any time to react. Look at the way Serena was able to manipulate that ball and get it up and down. There was so much consistency. She is locked in.
“Serena’s serve is hard and it’s powerful. How can you defend when it’s that powerful and near the sidelines? I think the mixed doubles [with Britain’s Andy Murray] really helped as well. It brought her intensity up. She had three matches with Andy and we know how intense he is.”
