Hell must be paid

Synopsis: (Y/N) is a ruling crime boss in National City and the alpha of the city's werewolf pack. When her lover Morgana(let’s pretend she is in this multiverse and the twin sister of Lena Luthor, who stayed behind in Ireland) gets hurt, somebody has to pay.

Two sets of headlights illuminated the night sky as they drove in unison to the docks. The first car stopped with screeching tyres making it stop abruptly and rattle forward in front of the pier,. The figure behind the steering wheel stepping out of the car and looked at the scene around her, knowing it was a cliché but a good cliché.

As she approached the trunk of her car, five guys came out of the other vehicle and set up a perimeter. Blending so into the shadows that if she couldn't sense them (Y/N) wouldn't even know they were there. But (Y/N) could tell all her men apart just by smell. That is how she caught the rat.

Before opening the trunk (Y/N) gave her surroundings a once over. She wouldn't want unwanted guests at her party. Opening the trunk, she ignored the body, pretending to be unconscious. Her acute senses could tell the difference, but she would give him his false sense of security. No, first, she had some things to set up. (Y/N) grabbed the chains and heavy weights from next to the man and threw them at the end of the docks. She was letting them fall with a loud clang.

People always said she had a flair for dramatics. It also gave her time to calm down a little and go over what she was going to do to the dead man before he became a dead man.

Thinking back at what the low life in her car had done made her blood boil, and she could not help but think of who it had almost cost her.

When (Y/N) was sure she wasn't going to rip his guy's throat out, she went to pull him out of the car.

Looking down at the man (Y/N), she watched the man who almost took everything from her a couple of hours ago. She waited for him to look her in the eyes.

She knew who the guy was when her men picked him up: James 'Jimmy' Olsen, a former associate of the Kent Clan. What (Y/N) had heard as of late was that he was working for the Danvers sisters.

James finally opened his eyes after (Y/N) glared at him for a few minutes. He was trying not to show his fear, but (Y/N) knew better. She could practically taste his fear.

"Mister Olsen, how nice of you to stop pretending." (Y/N) said in a sweet voice and kind smile, knowing he wouldn't buy it. The smile dropped when he didn't answer.

"I suggest, Mister Olsen, that you don't look a gifted horse in the mouth. To begin with, you are already on thin ice. So don't throw my kindness in my face." (Y/N) half growls as she grabs him by the shirt collar and lifted him out of the trunk like he weighed nothing more than a trash bag. (Y/N) Threw him toward the weight and chains. He comes down while scraping over the ground. Because his hands and feet were bound, he couldn't prepare himself and landed face first, cutting him up just a bit.

Not even a curse. someone had done this before.

(Y/N) hiked over to him, making her footsteps be heard so he knew she was coming closer. She grabbed James roughly by the shoulder and forced him on his back, with her looming over him—eyes just a little too bright in the night and teeth just a little too sharp.

"what do you want from me?" James asked, trying to get away. The hand on his shoulder prevented him from getting very far.

with the poor lighting around them it was like a demon staring down at him, and he had to do everything he could not let his fear show. With the cocky look, James saw on your face, he knew you could tell anyway.

"I think you know what I want from you, Mister Olsen. Seeing as where my men caught you." Patience was not your strong suit; buy you could be when you had to be.

"your men snatched me off the street with no good reason." James started to struggle, trying to get free. He got nowhere, however, except for being slammed back into the ground.

"No, my men picked you up because you smelled like the explosives that set one of my warehouses on fire tonight. A wolf's nose never lies, Mister Olsen. So, who sent you?" He stayed silent and glared at (Y/N), making her furious. Did the little prick even know what he had almost done tonight, who he had nearly cost her?

If he wouldn't talk to save his life, maybe something else could rattle his cage.

"I heard your sister and her wife adopted a little girl recently." That seemed to strike a nerve because he started to fight like an animal. Making (Y/N) smile.

"you bitch. Keep away from my family!"

"I will if you tell me what I want to know…"

A car approaching them pierced the silence. As the vehicle stopped, a chorus of growls could be heard. The person getting out didn't seem to care as they came closer. (Y/N) craned her neck to the side as the mystery person got closer.

"Let him go (Y/N)." Just a little bit of her Irish accent came through, but otherwise, she sounded exactly like Morgana.

"Well, if it isn't the poster child of the Luthor clan herself. Oh, wait, you are nothing more than the breeding bitch of the youngest Danvers now. Here to save the boy toy? (Y/N)' s mouth turned into a loose grin, more teeth than a smile and a mocking tone.

Eyes rooming over Lena's body. Except for the suit and straight hair, she looked exactly like Morgana.

Morgana who was lying unconscious in a hospital bed after a wall collapsed on her. Caused by an explosion ripping through the warehouse, James Olsen had set on fire.

When Lena noticed (Y/N) wasn't budging, she repeated her request, making (Y/N) laugh.

"You knew me, Lena. Mercy isn't in my book." (Y/N) said. Her attention went back to the man under her. She put the chains around the weight before rapping the weights around James, making her intentions very clear.

"if I let him go, what would that do to my reputation?" (Y/N) could feel her rage build the longer Lena was around. Her scent resembled her wounded lover, setting her inner animal on edge.

Lena was smart enough not to get closer. Sensing that (Y/N) was getting more agitated. Slipping from being a brutal bitch to the animal that dwelled inside.

“(Y/N)! whatever you think James has done…"

"You mean setting my warehouse on fire?" It took Lena a little too long for (Y/N) 's liking to come to James's defence.

"so the Danvers sisters set you up for this, Jimmy." (Y/N) says, looking down at James.

Hoisting him up with one arm, she dangled him over the water.

"And here I thought we were getting somewhere in our meetings."

“(Y/N) please! James was ill-informed. He thought your men were responsible for something my brother did."

"the beating of Winn Scott? That's what this is all about." (Y/N) didn't know if she wanted to scream or laugh.

"the warehouse was empty. I checked!" James yelled, his brave demeanour cracking as he dangled in the air over the water.

"you know what is stored next to that warehouse?" Lena noticed (Y/N) 's demeanour growing colder and becoming more dangerous.

"How should I know!" James was getting frantic.

"next to that warehouse, they stored car batteries. When they caught fire, they exploded. Injuring a very important person to me." That sends Lena's mind into overdrive. Only so many people could get this strong reaction out of you. Before anything else could be said, one of (Y/N) 's men emerged from the shadows.

"boss, she is awake." Lena could feel the heaviness of those words. (Y/N) stepped back from the edge and let James fall to the ground without a second thought. She was walking away before he even hit the ground. When she passed Lena, she stopped for just a moment.

"This isn't forgotten. If Morganna doesn't fully recover, I will see this little stunt as an act of war. Also, you can consider our meeting over and get your men out of my territory within the next 2 hours, or I will consider them fair game." With that, (Y/N) got into her car and sped off.

Lena caught her breath momentarily, not knowing she was holding it. She got to James and helped him out of his binds.

"I hope for all our sakes, James, that Morgana isn't that injured; otherwise, we have a war on our hands. Also, you can explain this to Alex when we get back."

i’ve been obsessed with the idea of a Mob!AU Winn Schott fanfic since rewatching the Flash musical episode.

like, just imagine it: he’s been caught up in the family since his Dad is the Toymaker, but he doesn’t do their dirty work. he helps with the books (20’s equivalent of I.T. i guess) and he also plays the piano in the speakeasy, like in the episode. falls for the boss’ daughter and they have an elicit romance-

am i the only one obsessed with this? would anyone else even read it if i ever wrote it?

This was a rare novelty: Lena was not the most famous person in a pubic place. In fact, dressed down in jeans, a tank top, and a ball cap, Lena was downright unremarkable. Or at least, it seemed that way.

All of the attention was heaped on Kara. Or rather-

“Supergirl!”

A gaggle of girls of versions ages charged over to them in a virtual mob, and Lena felt almost snubbed. Kara, herself in shorts and a Sentinels jersey, briefly seemed confused at the attention, even though she’d been out as Supergirl for almost six months now.

She quickly settled into meeting and greeting, asking the girls their names and signing various bits and bobs for them while the rest of the group, Alex and Kelly and Nia and Brainy, hung back, just behind Lena.

Finally, Kara managed to disentangle herself when security started breathing down their necks.

Lena had gotten everyone box seats directly behind the home dugout, and the group made their way down.

“This is pretty far from the rent-controlled section,” Kara said, grinning as she gestured at the nosebleed seats, a high above them on the top deck.

Brainy immediately settled in to study the game program and books on baseball he’d brought with him, amiably explaining (mansplaining? Coulansplaining?) baseball to Nia. For her part, his girlfriend seemed content to listen to his excited chatter, so Lena wasn’t bothered.

Alex had apparently appointed herself to keep Kara fed, and had already acquired enough snacks for a small army, and Kara was happy to dig in and take a chili dog in either hand.

Lena didn’t much care for the game, so she was pleased when Alex handed her a beer with a sardonic “things we do for love” look. Kelly was apparently more the fan of the two, and the Sentinels were playing the Metropolis Knights in this game, prompting an intra-Superfriend rivalry.

As for Lena? She was there for Kara.

The afternoon light seemed to caress her features, bringing out the soft glow in her honeyed skin and golden hair, and there were depths in her eyes that no one in the world could ever equal. Lena could stare at her forever and never get bored.

The spell wasn’t even broken when she polished off the first two hot dogs and let out a wild, rumbling belch that made her giggle and Alex roll her eyes.

She already knew that she was in love with Kara, but every time it seemed like her heart was full to bursting, it grew even fuller.

Lena has meant this for them. Lena had offered her the seats, hoping to feel out Kara about the potential for a date-date, to finally get an answer about the maddening tension between them over the last two months. Kara spent more time at Lena’s new house over the last two months than she had in her own apartment, and yet that line had never been crossed.

The line remained unbroken, but they were right up against it. Kara gave Lena’s thigh a squeeze without seeming to realize what she was doing, then yanked her hand back as if she’d touched something hot, and just played it off when Lena looked at her, and kept looking at her.

The start of the game spared her from the awkward conversation.

Kara was eager to explain to her, leaning over to over-explain the nuances of every move and play.

Exactly like Brainy and Kelly were doing with their girlfriends.

Lena paid her more attention than the game, so Lena didn’t even notice when one of the Knights hit the ball oddly and, instead of flying out over the field, rocketed almost straight up. Lena was, in fact, so focused on Kara that she didn’t realize where the ball was going until it was cutting lazily through the air and headed straight at her head.

A yelp jumped from her throat and she jerked back, but of course there was nothing to fear. A moment later there was a hearty slap of cowhide on skin. Kara plucked the ball from the air two inches from Lena’s nose, dramatically holding it in place for a moment.

When she moved her hand, and the ball, Lena followed Alex’s eye-line. Kara’s sister was groaning.

They were all on the Jumbotron, the huge screen over the left field stands, and the crowd was pointing and cheering as the announcer’s voices boomed out about the great catch by Supergirl.

Lena wanted to sink through her seat.

Then Kara said, “Here.”

She held out the ball in both hands, turning in her seat. The way she held it, cupped gently in her palms with great reverence, giving Lena a weird and silky flash of her doing the same thing with a velvet box. Lena took it, grinning like an idiot in spite of herself and clutching it to her chest.

Lena pointed at the giant screen, and Kara looked, waving to the crowd as if she’d suddenly remembered that they were there. Lena gave a half-hearted wave, then turned back to Kara to say something.

Whatever it was, it was utterly scrubbed from Lena’s brain by impossibly soft lips gently brushing her own, then locking with them. Some distant part of Lena’s brain tried to explain, to rationalize. It was a mistake. Kara would get flustered and play it off with something about what friends are for and the moment would slide away, a taste of a dream that would leave Lena starving for another morsel.

No. Kara was full on kissing her. The heat that surged through Lena’s body was all consuming, and she barely registered the thunderous cheers from the crowd. She let herself fall into Kara, hiding against her shoulder as Kara wrapped an arm around her and settled them both lower in their seats, tugging her ball cap down.

The camera finally turned its attention elsewhere.

Alex turned to Kelly and said, “fucking finally.”

“Hey,” said Kara, her voice soft and only for her. “Want to head home after the stretch?”

Home. Not your house. Home.

“I’m not totally sure what that means, but yes,” Lena whispered back, then popped a bit of popcorn in Kara’s mouth.

“I’m telling you Lena, there’s no good Luthor. All of them are shady.” Kara said and downed a shot of tequila while Lena cringed internally.

“Maybe one of them will surprise you.”

“Impossible.” Kara chuckled, grabbing a handful of peanuts and popping them into her mouth. “Where there’s smoke there’s a Luthor.”

“I’m sure there’s something good in one of them.”

“No, I don’t think so. There’s what, three of them left? A mother whose foundation has been under investigation for allegedly mishandling funds, a son under investigation for his links to the mob and controversial political speech, and a third one no one knows anything about… probably in jail for all we know.” She chuckled.

“Or maybe doing work on their own, away from the nefarious family stuff.”

“No, Lena… I’m telling you. That family’s rotten.”

“Don’t be so rude, Kara.” Alex chuckled, handing her another shot of tequila. “We don’t know if this other Luthor is actually a good person… say for a moment Lena’s right, what if we don’t know anything about this person because they’re doing good and don’t want to be associated with the family scandals?”

“I guess it’s a possibility.” Kara finally conceded, clinking her glass to Lena and downing the shot. “I just don’t like it that there’s so much noise about them investing in the hospital… yay for them to do something good, but at what cost?”

“Maybe it’s a good thing.” Alex shrugged.

“Maybe they’re just trying to save face.”

“Whatever the reason, lots of people will benefit from it.” Lena interrupted her. “The hospital got more money, we can certainly use it for good.”

“That’s true. I hope we get some help to renew the facilities and that sweet new machine for-”

“Hell no, Alex. We need more nurses! We’re swamped and busy! You get your machine when we stop having to work overtime to help with the workload.” Kara scoffed. “You fancy doctors always forget about us.”

“Impossible to forget about you… you whine too much.” Alex smirked playfully, making Lena laugh at the offended look on Kara’s face.

“Oh you don’t laugh, Dr Kieran!” She said in a mocking voice.

“Sorry nurse Danvers.”

“What would your surgeries be without us? What would your patients do without us?”

“Kara, chill! We’re not the union people, okay?” Alex laughed. “We know nurses see important, but improving the technology we have at hand to help people makes a difference too.”

“I know, but don’t play all high and mighty when- is it the hospital?” She asked when she saw Lena checking her phone and frowning.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” Lena said simply to Kara and grabbed her bag before making her way out of the small bar near the hospital where they usually met after work.

“I know you said you’d wait to tell her, but-”

“I can’t just tell her I love her, Alex.”

“You can, and in fact you should do just that.”

“She’s just not into me like that.” She pouted. “She’s perfect and so amazing.” She groaned, looking down at her hands. “Why would a prestigious surgeon like her be interested in someone like me?”

“Because you’re great and Lena isn’t some superficial asshole who looks down on you because you’re a nurse.” She rolled her eyes. “Kara, if I’m insisting on you telling her it’s because I see you two together… the way she looks at you? That’s not friendship.” She chuckled. “You know which friend looks at me like that? My girlfriend.”

“You’re so funny.”

“I mean it, Kara. Just… tell her how you feel.”

“What if she doesn’t feel the same?”

“What if she does?” She groaned, knowing the road the conversation would take if she didn’t stop Kara’s train of thought. “She’s Lena when she’s with you, and she looks at you with more than professional respect and friendship. I have my own two eyes and I see it, Kara. You have to tell her.”

“I have to find the perfect moment.”

“You guys are going to the theater tomorrow… that screams date. Tell her when you walk her home.”

“How do you know I’ll walk her home?”

“You always do. It’s your way of making sure she’s safely home.” She rolled her eyes. “Tell her… you might get lucky with a goodnight kiss, or maybe some more.” She smirked and Kara groaned and nodded for another shot to be poured for her.

"Is the living room the best place for this?", Robin asked. "In the middle of the day?"

"We've got a team handling the angry mob. And another team taking care of the monsters coming out of the town gate", Dustin said.

"And you're sure Vecna and the Mind Flayer can't see anything you see?", Will asked, his eyes hard.

Kas met his gaze, wishing their first meeting was under better circumstances. "I'm sure. I am connected to him. But he doesn't control me."

He was holding tight to Steve's hand. If there was one person that could pull his strings...

"Hey", Steve squeezed his hand. "Focus. I know what that look means. We're going to start soon."

Kas let out a breath. "Okay, I'm new to the whole, supergirl thing. Explain to me how this is gonna work again?"

"I'm going to go into your mind", El began. "But I can't go in directly. Because you won't let me." She had already tried and Kas had lashed out, putting a barrier between her and his deeper thoughts.

"So she's gonna go in through me instead", Dustin beamed.

"Still not sure how I feel about Henderson being in my head", Kas said.

But they had already decided that as much as he liked Steve, it couldn't be him. Not when he was still split on how he felt and acted. There was a chance he'd welcome Steve with open arms. It was just as likely that he'd shield him out.

"I'll be here the whole time", Steve said.

"Alright. Let's do this."

Kas laid his body along the couch, his head in Steve's lap. Steve played with his hair and it didn't take long for him to fall asleep. He didn't remember if that was part of the plan, but it happened. Kas was in the black void of the shared mind space. Eddie was there too, chewing on the nail of his thumb.

"What if this goes wrong? We don't know what's gonna happen when they kill Vecna."

"We told Steve not to worry. We have to believe that too. We've gotta believe that everything's gonna be okay."

"But what if it's not?"

"But what if it is? What if we could have everything we want?"

"Whoa, this is trippy", came Dustin's voice. And suddenly he was next to them.

"You got in!" Both consciousness' shouted and hugged Dustin while jumping, which brought a big smile to his face.

"Okay, I've got several questions. First of all, which is which?"

"The one with the sharp teeth is Kas, dude."

"Coooool." Dustin was still looking back and forth between them. "So like, why is there two of you? Did Vecna do that?"

"He did", Eddie said. "Said he was making me better. Removing my inhibitions."

"So you uninhibited is just you being super into Steve? Cause that's the only thing that's changed since you got back."

"He's right", Kas said with a grin.

"Yeah, well", Eddie stuck his hands into his back pockets. "Turns out that was a big part of myself that I was holding back."

"Why? Because he's a guy? Or because it's Steve?"

Eddie looked to Kas, waiting for him to answer for the both of them. But Kas was silent.

"He asked you, not me."

"Oh, so we're the same person when it suits you but when it comes to the hard questions-"

"Eddie, we don't care if you're gay. Or if it's Steve. You know that, right?", Dustin said.

"You don't know that", Eddie said with a shake of his head. "You can't speak for everyone."

Dustin threw his hands up. "Then think about how everyone's been treating you two. Yeah, maybe me, and Lucas, and Mike were too focused on other things to see it, but El and Will knew. I bet Nancy and Robin knew too."

Eddie was trying to hide behind his hair while Kas was openly smirking. Robin definitely knew. She'd walked in on them one too many times.

"Could it really be this easy?", Eddie asked to the open air.

Dustin started counting off his fingers. "I mean, there's still the angry mob that wants to kill you, homophobes outside your group of friends, plus Steve is probably a high maintenance boyfriend-"

"I can provide any services he needs", Kas licked his lips.

"And you're gonna need to put a lid on that kinda talk. At least a loose one. Else you're gonna make us all gag on your PDA."

"No promises", Eddie and Kas said at the same time.

In the distance they heard screaming and something like the sound of paper ripping apart. Kas winced. He could tell what was happening.

"Vecna is dead."

Eddie's eyes were wide. "Oh shit."

"Eddie, you're gonna be fine, right? When we wake up, you're still gonna be there, right?", Dustin asked, grabbing his arms suddenly.

Eddie looked down into his eyes. For the first time in a while, he wanted to believe. He had to believe that everything was going to be okay. He was coming back, he'd get to have Steve, they'd figure out the mob of townsfolk. Hell, he might even get his GED.

"Dustin, I'll see you at home", he said.

When his eyes opened, it was to the sound of Steve's battle cry as he sliced the head off a demogorgan. Eddie shot up and took out the one that was coming at him from behind, digging his teeth in and ripping it apart.

Steve turned and wrapping his arms around him, mindful of the machete but not of the blood covering them both. When he pulled back, Steve looked into his eyes.

"Are you all the way there?"

"Indeed I am", he said. Kas was no longer a physical presence in his mind. If Steve wanted all of him, then that was what he would give. He wrapped his arms around Steve and leaned in, only to be stopped by Steve putting two fingers to his lips.

"I love you Eds, but I'm not kissing you with monster blood in your mouth."

"A compromise then." Eddie kissed his fingertips, then his knuckles, then the back of his hand. Steve's hand also had drops of blood on them but he found he didn't really care. He was halfway up Steve's arm when Will cleared his throat.

"Yeah, we're still here", he reminded them.

"And if we're done, we can get to the others. This isn't over yet", Dustin said before grabbing his walkie and relaying the current status to whoever was listening.

El walked up to them, smiling. "Congratulations."

Steve looked only slightly embarrassed and Eddie took that as a win. Because whatever happened next, they could handle it together. Eddie was all in.

Sibling Showdown!!!

This showdown consists of 64 sibling sets facing off against each other, as well as a few one-off polls of sets who didn’t make the actual bracket but who I wanted to include in some capacity.  Polls will last a week.  Round One of section A will go live on April 16, with section B going live the day after, section C the day after that, and section D the day after that.

Propaganda is allowed!  I just ask that it be kept positive.  Argue for your faves instead of against someone else’s.  Every sibling set who made it in the showdown is there because someone wanted them to be, so keep it kind.

October 2015. I was a bit dubious about this miniseries, which is an origin story of John Shaft, Ernest Tidyman's private investigator character who later featured in a trio of blaxploitation movies (perhaps best known today for the first film's Isaac Hayes soundtrack), but it's pretty decent. The plot breaks no new ground for the genre: John Shaft is a Vietnam veteran and former boxer who becomes a private detective and ends up trying to avenge the murder of his girlfriend, even though it means bucking the mob and the city's corrupt cops in the process. However, it's refreshingly straightforward and appropriately tough-minded, resisting any impulse to self-mockery. If you like the movies, it's not a bad companion piece. (I've never read the Tidyman novels.)

The interior art is by Bilquis Everly, less fanciful than her recent Wonder Woman and Supergirl work, but with a nice flair for real-world characters that suits the gritty mood. Maybe the biggest complaint is that her Shaft doesn't look anything like Richard Roundtree, who played the character in the movies and TV show. Walker's notes at the end say this was deliberate, to bring the character closer to the description in the novels (and one supposes there were likeness rights issues as well), but if you're mainly familiar with the movies — which are of course part of the blaxploitation canon — it's hard not to feel the character doesn't really look like John Shaft, even a somewhat younger John Shaft.

Hello I’m looking for 2 supercorp fics.

1)Kara is a server at a bar that Lena owns. Lena is a criminal or something but she walks in with a few big guys and kara is surprised that she’s the boss (?). Lena asks kara to make them drinks but later on she has kara sit with her during the meeting that they hold at the bar. Lena gives off like mob boss vibes and calls kara “my girl” and stuff like that.

Anyway lena ends up threatening monel at some point by using kara as leverage (with a rubber knife to the neck) and kara gets upset and says that Lena used her for personal gain, never actually cared about her and that she doesn’t want to see her again.

I think it ends with them “starting over” and trying again.

2) Lena was from krypton and her and kara were best friends. They both came to earth but got separated. Lena was captured by the luthors and doesn’t get out till she’s much older. (I read this years back and I believe the notes said that the triggering stuff with Lena was put on a separate chapter all together so that you could skip it all which was helpful bc I didn’t want to read that part it gets dark)

Anyways lena becomes ceo and kara goes to interview her with Clark and they recognize each other and start talking in their own language that only they know and calling each other their special names. Lena says she’s been looking for kara and kara says that she thought lena was dead. Clark thinks kara is off her rocker and flips out because he thinks lena is like the other luthors.

Sometime later on Clark comes back and tries to punch lena but lena has powers (dampened though) so he’s not successful.

Lena and kara get together and when lena tells kara what the luthors did to her kara gets revenge.

In his mind the floor of his van was just about to get wet, along with portions of the seat and some of her clothes. The road itself wasn’t something he’d describe as smooth but nothing could have prepared Yusuke for what he saw. ‘Chucking water on the burn..normal. But what the hell was THAT?!’ The moment her eyes began glowing he saw the burn from her skin slowly disappearing from view. Just who was this woman? Never in his life has he ever seen such efficient healing.

But for now he would be forced to remain focused on where they were going. As she says, if these people were part of a korean mob, then they’ve probably made eyes on Yusuke’s plates and were probably planning to raid his apartment as he thought of all of this. “That’d definitely be the better idea, but I have a feelin’ they’d be coming after us anyway. I get to kick more ass AND I get some answers, Two snitches, one bullet type’a deal. Either way Supergirl hope ya don’t mind small houses cause that’s where we’re goin’.”

She could feel the cooling sensation of the water as it slid down her throat, into her stomach, and finally, into the ever-churning stream of water in her hydrotubules. The fresh water replacing what she had lost already helped her feel a bit rejuvenated, even if it was just a placebo effect and wouldn't really make a difference until at least about twenty minutes had passed. Vartouhi finished off the bottle of water, crushing the plastic into a tiny ball between her hands. For a moment, she struggled with where to put the trash, before deciding to leave it in the cubby on the inside of the passenger's side door. She'd try to remember to get it later, so as not to be rude, she thought.

Vartouhi turned her attention back to Yusuke, biting her bottom lip in concern at his prediction. She unfortunately had to agree, they would probably be pursued before long, if they weren't already. She tipped her head at his wording, not quite understanding his phrasing but getting the gist from context clues, at least. "Any shelter would be preferable to roaming the streets like I've been doing the past few weeks..." she admitted, leaning back in the seat to let her head fall back against the head rest. Her eyes moved to take in the city scenery passing by them. "Why are you helping me?" she asked, curious.

In Justice League (Unlimited), and in fact the entire Dini-verse, despite the fact that it was written for a younger audience, there are a large number of themes that surprisingly mature. One theme is romance.

Obviously Batman has Catwoman and Talia Al-Guhl and Superman has Lois Lane. However, the two Justice League series has four (including a love triangle)!

Green Arrow and Black Carnary

…as well as Vixen

Batman and Wonder Woman (they never go anywhere with this, but it’s obvious they have feelings for one another. I’ll have to do a deep dive on this one of these days)

And finally, the subject of this week’s review. First, let’s discuss the participants, as most people aren’t comic geeks who love the minor heroes more than the marquee ones…

The Huntress debuted on Earth-2 (where DC stashed their Golden Age heroes until they were needed) prior to Crisis as Helena Wayne, the daughter of Bruce and Selina Wayne. Following Crisis, she was reimagined as Helena Bertinelli, the last surviving family member of a slain Mob Boss, who became a ruthless vigilante in an attempt to avenge her dead family.

Huntress makes her debut in a brief appearance fighting a bunch of robot spiders (but that’s not important for this review)

The Question was created by Steve Ditko as part of Charleton Comics’ “Action Line” (which was ended a year later). When Ditko joined DC Comics, the company (as a “gift”) bought the rights to the Action Line, dumping them on Earth-4 in the DC Multiverse and forgetting about them until Crisis (though they were re-imagined in Watchmen, with the Question being the inspiration for Rorschach)

In the comics, the Question was a very philosophical hero (starting out following the teachings of Ayn Rand in Charlton, and Zen Buddhism following Crisis). However, in JLU the Question is a cynical conspiracy theorist looking for everyone’s “angle”.

Question made his debut working with Supergirl and Green Arrow trying to find out why Supergirl was having disturbing dreams (while I won’t cover that for this review, it is kinda important as you’ll soon discover)

And now that we’ve established the players, on to the story!

NOTE: I will mainly be focusing the scenes involving Huntress and the Question. Any elements beyond their involvement I will likely ignore (unless it’s important later) If you would like to view the episodes in their entirety, they’re available on Max or behind your favorite paywall.

PREVIOUSLY ON…

Following the events of A Better World, an organization known as Cadmus (a government shadow ops group with off-the-books funding from Luthor) emerges of the League’s radar, performing such acts as illegal cloning (including a clone of Supergirl, which was the source of her bad dreams (told you it would be important)) The Question begins poking into Cadmus’s business after helping Supergirl and Green Arrow, trying to find the bottom of that rabbit hole.

Meanwhile, Lex Luthor has announced his candidacy for President (and is apparently doing well despite his criminal past. A criminal billionaire with no prior political career running for President? Like that could ever happen!)

Now, on with the show!

We open at the estate of Mafia Boss Steven Mandragora where a couple of his bodyguards are arguing about their secret scone recipe (sure, why not?) when they hear a noise in the bushes. Suddenly a figure from the bushes makes short work of them (but, this being for kids, doesn’t kill them despite using a crossbow) The figure then scales the building and enters the study.

You were expecting someone else?

Huntress uses an aerosol to spot the alarm beams and evade them. She then enters Mandragora’s bedroom and shoots the figure under the blanket (OK, this got dark quick!) However…

…as you may have guessed, Mandragora isn’t there. She then gets contacted by J’onn in the Watchtower and teleported.

Guess who’s in trouble? J’onn expels Huntress from the Justice League. As she goes to her quarters to gather her things…

Huntress enters the Question’s quarters, makes fun of his looks (what she thinks he looks like under his faceless mask) and his obsession before offering to help him with Cadmus in exchange for helping her track down Mandragora. (Something tells me she knows two things about Cadmus: Jack and Squat)

And where is Mandragora?

In a safe house being guarded by the FBI, Green Arrow, and Black Canary. Turns out Mandragora has promised to turn State’s Evidence against his fellow Mob Bosses in exchange for Witness Protection.

Meanwhile, the Question has found out about Mandragora’s location, and offers to tag along with Huntress.

Later, Mandragora’s goons, dressed as cops, attack the FBI while Canary and Arrow are on lookout duty outside. Then…

A wee bit later, as Huntress and the Question head to the waterfront, the Question reveals he knows Huntress knows nothing about Cadmus. Further, he knows about her connection to Mandragora.

So, if the Question knows why Huntress wants Mandragora, and that she has nothing to offer in exchange for his help, why is he helping?

Meanwhile, Canary (with Arrow riding behind) has caught up with them and demands that they stop. Question drives his car into a rail tunnel. Just one problem…

Question manages to turn into the side tunnel before the train hits him, but Arrow has to call for J’onn to teleport him and Canary. J’onn does so…over the bay where they land safely in the water.

Meanwhile, Question reveals that there’s a freighter from Mandragora’s country arriving shortly.

So now the Huntress and the Question are An Item, but it’s not their last appearance together. This episode focused primarily on the Huntress’s obsession, while the next is all about the Question.

We open on Metropolis, where a warlord from Apokolips named Mantis is tearing up the city.

Fortunately, Superman is on the scene with an assist by Captain Atom (another Charlton import: Captain Nathanial Adams (USAF) was condemned for a crime he didn’t commit. He exchanged his death sentence for being a guinea pig for an experiment that turned him into a living nuclear reactor (similar to Firestorm, but with energy conversion instead of matter manipulation)) After a brief battle, Superman manages to activate Mantis’s Boom Tube and Captain Atom blasts Mantis through.

Following the attack, Lois Lane shows up looking for alone time with Superman, so Captain Adam makes himself scarce. After leaving, Captain Atom is summoned by General Eiling (calling the good Captain by his actual name)…

…and drafts him into Cadmus.

Meanwhile, the Question and the Huntress have a “date night” where they break into LexCorp to dig up information about Cadmus.

Eventually, Question manages to download the files, but Huntress now wants an actual date in return. (Exactly how can they have a date night like regular people when Huntress hasn’t even seen Question’s face? It’s not like he can eat while wearing that mask!)

Later in Question’s apartment (wait, why does he have an apartment? He has free housing in the Watchtower!)

The Question goes to the Watchtower to confront Superman about this. Question reveals he knows what the Justice Lords did…and that events are lining up to make those same events happen in our universe!

Despite Superman’s assurances, the Question storms out of the Watchtower and to…

Huntress guesses that Cadmus must have Question.

Superman agrees to help Huntress rescue Question.

Obviously, Cadmus was expecting this. Fortunately for Huntress, Cadmus’s weaponry doesn’t affect Superman so she can hide behind him. Then Superman spots something and flies off, leaving Huntress to deal with Cadmus’s goon squad.

I think she's fine, if a bit annoyed.

They eventually find Question and free him…

…though he’s still a bit loopy (even for him) As they prepare to leave…

(You thought I casually mentioned Eiling drafting Captain Atom?)

The episode ends there and picks up on the next episode…

Fortunately, Superman manages to keep Captain Atom busy and gives Huntress his comlink so she can contact the Watchtower once she’s clear. One problem…

Huntress tell J’onn what he can do with his attitude and demands transport to save the Question (who, despite everything, is still a Member in Good Standing)

Later, in the infirmary, Question tells Huntress about the aerosol that seals/removes the mask from his face and changes his hair color, since he was having trouble breathing through it. After using the spray…

D’AWWWWWWW!

Now they can have a proper date night once he recovers!
