[VTM] Fic: Divine Intervention 5/15
Title: Divine Intervention
Fandom: Vampire: The Masquerade (His Dark Materials AU)
Adjacent Sub-Fandoms: London by Night, VTM: Coteries of New York, His Dark Materials
Main Characters: Olivia Martin (Ventrue OFC), Mithras, Roger de Camden
Major Characters: Tiffany de Camden (Ghoul OFC)
Story Summary:
A year and a half after drinking the blood of a powerful vampire, an American SI captive, Olivia, is released into British society to spy on the strongest one of all: Roger de Camden, a chronically depressed necromancer who’s quite ready to go to sleep and never wake up. But his daemon is utterly fascinated with Olivia, and worse still, the delusions she’s had since the diablerie seem to be fixated on the two of them in turn. But as the SI throw their plans away and Olivia finds herself fighting for her life, the delusion that she is Mithras, the ancient god-king of Britain, only seems to grow stronger and stronger. Worse still, there seems to be something other than Mithras living in her head with her…
Chapter Summary: In which Olivia goes mostly ignored by her new havenmates, and Timaeus says a bunch of spooky shit. Also she feels entitled to steal Roger's most prized possession.
Chapter 4 is here!
Snip:
Rowan lay on the ground, slumped to the side as if the daysleep had struck him halfway through drawing the damn thing. There was a strange pointed cap in his arms that looked like it should have disintegrated years ago. "Careful," Timaeus whispered. "He has our blood. He doesn't sleep as deeply as other Cainites."

Valerius deserves a sarcastic “you tried” gold star for his assassination attempt. Blowing up an ammunition depot is a great idea for dealing with powerful Kindred…
Except that he did it to probably the only two in London who it wouldn’t work on: the guy who can (apparently) step into the Shadowlands whenever he wants, and the guy who is notoriously resistant to fire.
Good job Valerius. Well done.

I'd love to know how you'd rewrite the SI's attack on London. Since it would be fun to see the SI get their asses kicked because they sorely underestimated Mithras and Roger. :)
I haven't really given it much thought beyond "London's Kindred population remains completely in tact", but I love your idea.

Which edition of the game is your chronicle in?
Ah. Bit of a story! My chronicle is a weird mash up of V5 and V20. Our ST is a big V20 fan and at the time he met us players, we only really knew about V5 and came in with already made character sheets and V5 materials to provide as well as puppy dog eyes. This is also the first VTM game all of the players have ever participated in. We have insanely good synergy with this ST and he basically said he would try out V5 and want to try V20 with us later down the line. Eventually, after some playtime and us getting our feet wet, we talked a lot about how V20 works and he asked us all if we were interested in him kind of making the game into a bit of a Frankenstein's monster. He made our game extremely "punch up" style. It is set in London. (Our ST is German and one of our players is from Zambia so, the setting choice was collaborative.) It is an interesting post Fall of London scenario and the beckoning isn't in our setting's canon, so there are a decent amount of Elders, plus the Cam and the Sabbat have a lot going on. (An ascended Mithras is in the city :D)
So, there is a bit of homebrew. Next time we are going to do just straight V20, but we enjoy our game the way it is too much to abandon it and are all fine with it being a little bit of a hot mess.

This might be a stupid question but how does generation and age affect vtm kindred? like if a 3rd gen kindred were embraced yesterday would they automatically be more powerful the a 5th gen who'd been around for 100 years? I tried looking it up and I just got confused...
Well, a 3rd generation Kindred couldn't be Embraced yesterday because the 2nd generation are all dead XD THAT WE KNOW OF. Dum-da-da-dum. So let's make the comparison a newly-Embraced 4th gen, versus a century-old 6th gen.
So first, how are we defining power? Ability to survive a fight? Raw potential? Higher stats? The century-old 6th gen would likely have higher stats (up to level 7) and be better able to survive night by night because they'd have accumulated more exp to spend on stats, disciplines, etc, whereas the newly-embraced 4th gen would have much more powerful potential (up to level 9), but wouldn't have had the time to build up those skills. They wouldn't have been Embraced with the ability to whip out The Last Dracul, y'know? Discipline-wise, they're definitely starting at a lower level, although attributes are a bit fuzzier (the baby methuselah might be able to punch through a steel wall in a panic).
In-universe, the explanation is that vampires get stronger over time, with vitae becoming more potent. Mechanically, this is mostly down to accumulated experience points, which can be spent on disciplines, attributes, et cetera. There'll still always be an upper limit depending on generation; a gen 6 vampire can't learn a level 8 discipline no matter what.
Where the fledgling 4th gen would beat the ancilla 6th gen is in the raw potential and power of their blood. A fledgling 4th gen would actually be in a ridiculous amount of danger, because their blood would be incredibly potent. They'd be diablerie-bait for anyone looking for a quick power-up. Just to demonstrate how potent methuselah blood is, Monty Coven (originally 11th gen) diablerised 4th gen Mithras and rocketed all the way down to 6th gen (albeit with Mithras' spirit surviving and able to take over again, with Roger's ritual restoring him to 4th gen power). Dropping five generations in one go! And a fledgling, who's presumably still trying to work out how to navigate the night? Oh man, they'd be potential Forbidden Snackies for everyone, while also likely needing very potent blood of their own (both older vampires and lower-gen vampires need more powerful blood; many methuselah have to resort to regular diablerie because drinking human blood just doesn't cut it any more).
So, tl;dr, a newly-Embraced 4th gen would have far more raw power and potential than an older vampire of the 6th gen, but the 6th gen would have had more time to actually learn their disciplines and accumulate abilities and skills, and also would probably want to eat the 4th gen for their ridiculously potent blood.

For Roshan: How does your religion view their connection with your god? Like does your belief system involve your god giving signs, or communicating somewhat regularly? Maybe less tangible things? Or is it a sort of "they can't or don't interfere" sort of thing? Not quite sure how to word this question I just really enjoy hearing different experiences as to how people view their connection with their gods and I'd love to hear yours.
>< Hmm. Well - I think the degree is probably a subject of debate, but I do think of Mithras as a god that can be communicated with and send signs (hell, I've asked for and received a sign even since arriving here, which was more than I was honestly expecting).
There's this kind of weird dynamic where Mithras is objectively a god that has turned away from vampirekind, cursed us even, and yet... he must still be watching us to some degree, because of that. And, after all, Mithraics have the Discipline of Helios as his gift to us, which allows us to partially shrug off his sun-curse, which means we must still have some favor from him. Maybe that's just a holdover from the version of the story where we were the only ones of his childer who remained loyal, instead of being the ones who returned after turning away, but I don't think so.
(For any VtM players in the background wondering what the hell I'm talking about when it comes to Helios, it's not a Discipline that appears in VtM canon; in the fictional sense, it was originally homebrewed at our table for the VtM canon Mithras (a Ventrue methuselah).)
Anyway. Got distracted waxing philosophical there, sorry. But yeah, Mithras absolutely does grant signs and sometimes even powers - even outside of Helios, there's magic associated with certain religious rites that is very, very real. (The skeptical would probably say it's "just" blood sorcery. The skeptical Mithraic would probably respond that the fact that this power is in the blood to be unlocked in the first place is itself the gift from Mithras. Etc. etc. You can get real deep in the weeds with this stuff.)
Hopefully that answers the question?

i keep seeing you tag things for lauralene please tell me more about her 👀👀
Detailed character info under the cut, in cast that's not your thing so sorryyyy
You have no idea how giddy seeing this question made me oh my god! I had to bust out the laptop to type this one all out lmao
Yes of course! Lauralene Lark is my VTM vampire OC who I currently play in a Victorian London campaign setting with some of my best friends.
Lauralene is truly one of my favorite characters ever, and I've put her smack dab in arguably the best/worst setting for a girl like her.
She's my southern siren. A southern belle from the states who was turned in France around the late 1700's, while in her early 20's, the prime of her life. She was accompanying her brother on business matters but secretly was always trying to elbow her way into the spotlight. There she met her sire, and was turned. She is from the Daughters of Cacophony bloodline, which means she can drive people to insanity or into submission with her voice, and baby girl is maxed out on charisma, manipulation, and performance.
While she is known for her voice, she is primarily a rising star as an actress on the stage in London. She was deeply maddeningly sickeningly in love with her lesbian sire whose whims she followed for the better part of a century, before ultimately being abandoned by her for reasons still unclear. The breakup is still a wound she carries, but she's gone through enough lately that she is in the anger stage about being abandoned, and is striving for personal success as a fuck you to her sire. She's petty as fuck when she wants to be, which is often.
She recently had her career take off and her personal life become absolutely destroyed by recent campaign events which I will not bore you with lol. Also worth mentioning: in our game Lauralene is the real life inspiration for Christine Daae from Phantom of the Opera. Her domain is the Royal Opera House, and her toxic jealous ex (the man who almost turned her, but who was not quick enough) is the basically her Phantom, & is working to reveal vampire existence to all of London & the world. He is obsessed with turning her to his side, which is currently very tempting and very dangerous. He is on the side of the enemy, known as The Sabbat, and Lauralene is tentatively gaining status as a member of the vampire Camarilla. And to associate with him would mean insta-death.
Additional fun tidbits:
- She has made a deal with a demon, which has made her an enemy of someone very important to a person in power
- She is helping drive asylum patients to madness for a scientific study
- She's very good at driving other vampires into a blood frenzy, albeit unintentionally 🤪 Very girl slay of her if you ask me but I'm biased.
- Prince Mithras of London wants to kill and eat her annoying ass. Not in the sexy way 😩
God there's honestly so much more about her since I've been playing her since March of last year, but she is my Lady Lazarus, my Persephone self-insert, and my own romantic embodiment of the lure of death.
I have a pinterest board for her as well and a spotify playlist because I can't casually engage with anything I enjoy I have to be weird about it always 🤦‍♀️❤️

SO.
I AM KINDA SORTA IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING A RELATIONSHIP MAP FOR ALL THE CHARACTERS.
and good gods, if this isn't a perfect representation of how convoluted all my thoughts are, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WOULD BE, TBH.
This was me while "digitally pinning all the stuff to the board"
Tumblr media
But in all seriousness, I am kinda sorta in the process of making a relationship map for all the characters of my "London By Night" Chronicles, and omg I didn't realize how intricated this all thing would turn out to be.
I certainly didn't expect Jacob to be the baby of the whole bunch, and yet here we are.
And then, you have Haytham, that would love to become part of Geriatric Town, but cannot because he doesn't meet the Generation threshold (tbh, not even the proper age, but we all know that Haytham is a Methuselah at heart, if not on the paper lololol).
The only thing that I kinda wish is for this to showcase also the Clan each character belongs to, because it was incredibly fun choosing the ones for the AC character!
Now I need to start adding some characters from the VtM lore and a few more OCs (Artemis, I am looking at you), and definitely I need to add more characters to Jacob's Baronry.
I was so tempted to actually put a picture of Nandor for Mithras (it fits. Yes, I am totally not thirsting for Nandor and looking for an excuse to use him in one way or another) but in the end I resorted to use his "official" portrait from the V5 corebook.
well, time to go back and brainstorm a tad more before going to sleep (gods I am still so freaking tired).
Toodaloo!

my favorite bit of VTM lore is like, everything that has to do with Mithras tbh
he's 4th generation which means he either was embraced directly by the Ventrue clan founder or ate someone who had been
he's 3200 years old+
he's persian but he fucking hates scottish people
the rules books keep saying that love isn't real for vampires, except for what he, Camden and the 6 humanity points they have between the two of them, have going on
his husband is the leader of a cult dedicated to him
he keeps taking 200 years long power naps and has to go back to ruling his territories even though a couple civilizations collapsed and all the people he knew died while he was asleep, even the vampire ones
he despises the Tremere so much he threw Valerius by a window for letting them come to London once
he stayed at a regular human mental health hospital for months after a bad breakup
Dracula actually canonically came to London and he was pissed about it
he kills a pack of werewolves w his hare hands and then immediately gets eaten by a 20 years old vampire
he even wears a phrygian hat on a daily basis
the camarilla hates him so much

do u have a favorite piece of vtm lore?
the thing with vtm lore (honestly wod lore) is i am finding it to be a gift that just keeps on giving. i'm always learning something.
i have an extreme bias for banu haqim and particularly like to learn about dur-an-ki because my pc is heaven's silliest ashipu. the dunsirn (hecata bloodline) literally have money abilities. (including an ability where they can fucking give or take away resource dots from other hecata once in a chronicle) the fact that kemintiri gave mithras a mental breakdown that made him check into a mortal insane asylum. caiaphas smith is such a scary hunter that justicars decided that the best way to handle him would be to force kindred to avoid him in hopes he can't access vitae anymore and will die of old age. sascha vykos' brand of pettiness (sealing a mortal's face shut and then embracing them for example)

Top five things to cross over with VtM. :>c
So I genuinely have a fair few of these! It gets pretty long-winded, so I'll throw most under a cut. Ahead: His Dark Materials, The Locked Tomb, Pokemon, Subnautica, aaand the Sims!
Spoiler warning for Nona the Ninth under the Locked Tomb section.
1. His Dark Materials. I actually have a whole tag for this. There are multiple ways you can take it (daemons die upon Embrace, daemons become the Beast, daemons still exist), with the latter being my favourite if only because I helped create Hvare (Mithras' manul daemon) and I would die for her. Probably would, actually.
Also go read Dusty's fic, it emotionally ruined me.
-
2. The Locked Tomb. There's some speculating here, mostly on the nature of thanergy and thalergy. In chat, we worked out a few more elements, namely vampires being powered by thanergy and thus… they're solar-powered by Dominicus. What an inversion! Before the sun was The Enemy, now it's what gives them life! (Or, technically, death!) Jod kills everyone with a thalergy signature. That's okay, vampires are thanergy-based, and thus avoid the death sweep!
…They don't avoid the nukes, but the ones that aren't killed in that just. End up in torpor for a bit, and when they wake up on a now-deserted Earth, they find that - for the first time - the sun is giving them the means to survive. They don't need vitae, Dominicus is thanergetic and is all they need. Solar-powered vampires! Some do end up leaving (I want to say Mithras does a stint on Trentham, which is only one planet over), but otherwise they more or less start their own society on the mostly-deserted Earth, and just. Avoid Canaan House.
(They're an absolute hit and a known quantity both in the Second and Seventh Houses, and there's a big collection on the Sixth, too. Second House digs the more militarily-minded ones, and if their largely immortal thanergy-based companions need to drink human blood when they're away from Dominicus, well, there's plenty of Blood of Eden soldiers. Seventh just adores the idea of beauty preserved by death, there's probably at least a few heirs who decided fuck all this cancer malarky, gimme the Embrace. And Sixth just digs anyone with old knowledge, and some of them have pre-Resurrection memories! The rest just… stay on Earth, avoiding Canaan House, not too bothered about things like old societies and… clothes and things and being solar-powered. Secret solar-powered nudist vampire colony.)
And then the events of the books happen and it all goes downhill from there.
Apocalypse: *happens* Vampires: "Well this sucks! *goes into torpor*" Torpor: *happens* Resurrection: *happens* A millennium or so later: "*cautious peeking out* Is it safe now? Oh shit, we're solar-powered 8D" Nine thousand years of a vampiric golden age: *happens* Lyctoral Trials: *announced* Vampires: "…Well fuck."
-
3. Pokemon. Yes I know, I know. It was a lot of throwing ideas back and forth for one particular story idea, but here's what we got!
Backstory: ~1000 years earlier, Michael, the Dracon, and Antonius are the Trinity, attempting to create a heaven on Earth via Some Kind Of Means. Antonius allows his jealousy and general 'being a garbage person' to get the better of him and ends up dying in some thematically appropriate way due to his own hubris; the Dracon, exhausted and burnt out, bails, and ends up finding a quiet existence tending to the God-Tree, the recently-dormant Xerneas, known as the Eldest. But he's still depressed as hell, and ultimately ends up departing to find Yveltal to end his existence, being turned to stone. Michael, refusing to accept the loss of both his lovers, strikes a deal with either Celebi or Dialga to be displaced in time, so he can force the Eldest to resurrect the Dracon.
A little before present day, Michael arrives in the modern Pokeverse, and starts going about trying to work out how to bring back the Dracon, keeping a protective eye both on the God-Tree and statue!Dracon. He's also been busy tracking down the Dracon's descendants, finding Symeon Gesudin and his young child, Myca. Michael manipulates them both into joining him, deciding that Symeon is an acceptable replacement for Antonius and that Myca… well, if he can't bring back the Dracon, then maybe he can have a new one. Myca initially is homesick but otherwise quite content in Michael's cult, but as they reach their teenage years, the gloss starts coming off and they realise that Michael definitely doesn't have their best interests at heart, and they run away with their Chikorita Sascha.
Part 1: New runaway Myca (around 16-ish, I'm thinking) sets out as a new trainer, taking the surname Vykos (their mother's) instead of Gesudin. On their travels, they meet Ilias, another young trainer, who turns out to be a runaway himself (he had actually left home a few years earlier, but had spent the last few years with his guardian Dorinta, who was now encouraging him to go on a Pokemon journey). Over the next two years, the two grow closer, starting to move on from their pasts…
…until Michael and Symeon show up. They plan on using the power of the still-dormant Eldest to force the Dracon's soul out of the statue and into a new vessel. Namely, Myca's body. Myca is less than impressed with this idea, and the fighting becomes pretty fierce. Sascha, Myca's starter, dies protecting them from Michael, Ilias is mortally wounded, and the Dracon's statue cracks. Ilias manages to crawl to the God-Tree and begs them to save Myca with his last breath. The Eldest awakens, kills Michael, and fuses the Dracon's soul into a mask before the statue can crumble completely, fuses Yamask!Dracon on to Myca's face so they can make each other stronger, absorbs Ilias' body, and vanishes. Symeon takes one look at Dracon!Myca and flees, leaving them completely alone, save for the Dracon merged to their soul.
Part 2: Some time has passed (not sure how much - could be anything from a few years to a few decades). The Eldest resurrects Ilias, but their grasp on time isn't… great and it's been quite some time since his death. Eventually finding his way back to civilisation, he's recognised as one of the kids who disappeared [x] years ago and is hospitalised, and while in the hospital, he sees a story about a terrorist called Sascha Vykos, who wears a gold mask and seems to be focusing on causing as much self-destructive chaos as possible that, apparently, never seems to even leave a scratch. Ilias promptly remembers Myca, and what happened, and is able to escape the hospital. Trying to work out what the hell happened, he manages to find former regional Professor candidate, Beckett, and briefly explains what happened.
Beckett is intrigued, and agrees to work with Ilias to find Myca, and preferably find a way to… bring them back to whoever they were before, because the actions 'Sascha' is taking really doesn't gel with Ilias' memories of Myca. They also cross paths with Symeon, and learn that he had been made immortal by the radiation the Eldest had given off when they had awakened, that Ilias likely is now too as he was resurrected, and that Myca is as well, since the Eldest wasn't about to lose their beloved adopted child again, were they? Symeon tries to convince Ilias that he had been misled by Michael too and just wanted to save his son, and Ilias reluctantly agrees to travel with him to find Myca. When they do finally meet again, Symeon reveals his deeply possessive side (he doesn't want to do anything evil, or so he claims, he just wants to like. Own Myca) and Dracon!Myca takes great pleasure in killing him.
Which. Valid.
They get the mask off somehow I haven't actually thought that bit through, Myca collapses in Ilias' arms, happy resolution! …except they're both immortal, somewhat displaced in time, and deeply traumatised, but hey, that's the next part's problem!
Part 3: Still working it out but it involves Myca learning how to people again, Ilias adjusting to the new time period, working out how to get rid of their pesky immortality and also what to do with Yamask!Dracon, and Beckett being an unpaid babysitter.
Here's an art!

Right okay those are all the ones I had prepared earlier. Let's make some up on the fly!
-
4. Subnautica. I did actually play around with a vampire!Ryley AU at one point, but making it VtM specifically should still work. I had vampires being a known element with powdered heme available on the Aurora in that AU, but if there's a Masquerade still around, then yeah, vampire crew members on the Aurora are just snacking on their crewmates on the regular. Gotta keep it quiet! In this case, Ryley is a vampire of unknown clan keeping it on the sly. When the Aurora crashes, he's still the only survivor, and the game more or less plays out the same with one major difference: he doesn't get sick.
Oh, he still gets infected. He has to drain fish blood here, it's probably unavoidable. And he still can't shut down the QEP with it floating around in his system, so if he ever wants to leave, he still has to go through the same plot. Some parts are easier (no need to worry about oxygen), some parts are harder (have to stay somewhere sheltered, like a cave, during the day so he doesn't go crispy; better make sure those caves are free of stingers and/or crashfish!), it does kind of balance out. The Aurora will be interesting. Lots of Rotschreck potential. That was an extreme act of bravery tyvm!
I feel ultimately, he stays. He's not going back to some shitty trans-gov where he's treated like shit. He's going to stay on his lovely water planet with his baby leviathan friends and those 4546B nights are his, my friend!
…He might go Mariner. Honestly, Gangrel does actually fit pretty well!
-
5. The Sims. Straud's bloodline are Toreador (he does play music, after all!); specifically, he and Miss Hell are Toreador antitribu. Lilith and Caleb take one (well, two) look/s at their sires and go "no thank you!!" and get the hell out of dodge and are currently chilling in San Myshuno with the Camarilla and pretending they absolutely don't have a Sabbat background. Caleb is Humanity 8, wanting to maintain who he is, missing food so much, and generally trying to be the best example of a Friendly Neighbourhood Vampire (albeit without letting anyone. Know he is. Masquerade and all). Lilith… slips a bit and might possibly benefit from a Path; she still maintains the more Sabbat way of thinking that it shouldn't be necessary to have to hide who she is, and so she's finding Humanity to be a bit of a struggle.
Hilariously, they're Kinfolk, from the Children of Gaia. Their cousin Lily did undergo the Change and now lives with her pack in Moonwood Mill; the Vatores didn't and barely survived their quite traumatic Embraces. The Children are quite dedicated to peace, and Lily sees good grounds for reconciliation with Caleb, at least, but she worries Lilith has been too influenced by the Wyrm to be redeemed, and would possibly have to be put down for the good of Gaia. Which. Awkward.
For the others - as mentioned, Miss Hell, Straud's childe, is actually ductus of their pack, with Vlad taking on the role of pack priest instead. Their other pack members are Kat and Markus. The Nobles are a coterie of older autarkis, who avoid the precepts of the Sabbat but do prefer to be able to live openly in Forgotten Hollow. Inna is still on Humanity and is generally as close as you'll get to a genuinely nice elder, while Elle and The Other Vlad are a bit more hardened and may follow Roads. And for the Virtuous ones, Demetrius is a neonate who came across the recently-Embraced fledglings Samantha and Brandy, and took them under his wing. They're still very young, and the Nobles try to keep a bit of an eye on them to make sure they don't get into too much trouble. Especially Samantha, who's starting to show some worrying traits…
Morgyn is a mage originally from House Tytalus of the Order of Hermes, surviving their apprenticeship and still maintaining a decent relationship with their master Aine. She died during the Reckoning, and Morgyn, disillusioned with Tytalus and the Order of Hermes in general, ended up leaving in disgust. Now they're dabbling with the Verbena and the Euthanatoi, but maybe they'll find belonging with a pair of vampires instead…?
