#Mirror Wambus

Yippee I've been officially working on Deadsnax for a year now!! :33 I thought I was going to give up on this project like... months ago. But I haven't surprisingly!! And I want to thank everyone who's been invested in this and the story so far, I know there's been a few bumps and a bunch of changes, but we're making progress!! Anyway, thanks to all who've supported this AU! Chapter two is still in the works (almost done) and should be out in the next week or so!

I have some more images! Beffica and Cromdo don't use their default idle pose as their in-game idle pose; Beffica uses one called SassyIdle and Cromdo uses one called AngryIdle. All the NPC Grumpus models except Eggabell and Clumby seem to have an AngryIdle pose, so I think it's a holdover from when you could use Bugsnax to change the characters' personalities.

Speaking of Clumby, here's Filbo with her default "I really wish I wasn't part of this video game" pose. Also a cursed Chandlo with Filbo's idle pose.

A few days ago I downloaded all of the grumpus character models, and found out that you can put different animations onto different characters. So anyways, here's every character's default posture, put on Filbo to show the differences!

(believe it or not, all of these are unique, even the characters who look identical have minute differences. the only difference between filbo and eggabell is that egg's mouth is one pixel wider. crazy.)

NEW AND IMPROVED DESIGNS AND CHARACTER BIOS!

For a while now, I’ve been unhappy with the current designs of the Bugswap cast, so instead of wallowing in my frustration, I decided to finally do something about it. So after a few days, I whipped up the most recent and updated version of the cast — both in designs and in profiles!

Under the readmore, I’ll go into more detail about my design process and what I changed. So if that stuff makes you curious, feel free to read on!

Now with all that soft rebooting out of the way, things should be back up to speed! Thanks for all your patience and support!

Filbo: I feel like Filbo’s design was too cluttered. So, the most I did was just cut off Filbo’s sleeves. Additionally, I gave Filbo a hat reminiscent of old Newsboy hats. I also shifted his electoral badge to his hat, so it’d mirror the press paper commonly seen on hats on journalist designs.

Ripley: I decided to make Ripley look more like my design for the journalist. I also removed the pattern on their shirt.

Triffany: I decided to make Triffany wear just one shirt with a ribbon around the neck. It gives her more of a rustic old-fashioned feel.

Wambus: I didn’t change much of Wambus’ design. Yay for Wambus!

Cromdo: I ditched Cromdo’s previous outfit altogether and gave him a tacky tourist shirt with a pattern similar to his necktie. I felt like the previous outfit didn’t reflect his personality in this AU, so the Hawaiian shirt leans more into the sleaziness of him!

Beffica: Like Wambus, I didn’t change much with Beffica. The most I did was replace her sash with a vest (common in Girl Scout juniors) and simplify the detail on her necklace.

Gramble: I decided to remove the Strabby and bandana to keep his color pallet consistent. Additionally, he now longer plays the banjo and is now a violinist (or rather fiddler).

Wiggle: I made her color pallet consist more of browns because her previous color palette was too clashy. She also has a little Cinnasnail beanie. In terms of backstory, I decided to remove the aspect of her being a child star and made her more of a traditional “lonely rich child” archetype.

Snorpy: I took Snorpy’s hair down and made it more au natural, mostly so he and Flooftix look more similar. For a while, I was divisive about Snorpy’s outfit, but I figured the “shirt-atop-a-long-sleeves” look fit his skater style. I also gave him a new T-shirt to fit him being a skater more.

Chandlo: I gave Chandlo a new outfit altogether since his previous one didn’t fit him. I gave him an outfit closer to Snorpy’s current outfit, so he resembles something of a blacksmith.

Flooftix: I didn’t change much with Flooftix. I simplified the pattern on their flower crown, and I now gave them a little stick cane to tie back into them being disabled (here, they just have a really bad knee as apprised to self-induced amputation).

Shellsy: I didn’t change Shellsy all too much. She’s pretty tried and true.

Eggabell: Her new outfit is a mix of both Lizbert’s canon outfit and her previous outfit. I think the dark browns create a nice contrast on her primarily white color palette.

Lizbert: I decided to just give her Eggabell’s canon outfit. Other than that, not much else has changed.

bugsnax fics essential reading

I have over 50 bugsnax fics I’ve written, which I realize is an extremely intimidating number. I thought I’d make a list of the ones that I personally think are the best and that people should start with if they’re interested in going through my back catalog. Individual warnings and ratings are on the fic pages themselves. Most of these are oneshots.

Monarch Sunrise

Features Gramble, Wiggle, Beffica and Cromdo. Takes place a decade after the events of the game, exploring what the characters have been up to in the meantime and how they’ve been affected by what happened on Snaktooth. Also they’re on a cruise!

Yes it’s long as hell but it’s the fic I worked the hardest on, and arguably the best-crafted in terms of what it sets up and pays off and the consistency of the themes throughout. It’s the one that’s the most *me* in terms of what I like in a fic, and it took roughly four months to complete with the help of several betas.

Bandages

Focuses on Gramble and Eggabell but most of the cast appears. The slow deterioration of Snaxburg is mirrored in Gramble’s failing health and Eggabell’s crumbling mental state.

Field Notes

Features Floofty and Gramble. Floofty returns to Snaktooth about a year after their escape, and finds out more than they bargained for.

This is part of the strawberry shortcake/host AU, which I know is a bit niche, but I really think this one is great especially how it crescendos.

Due Care

Features Wiggle and Floofty. After the scattering of Snaxburg, Wiggle seeks out Floofty in order to get medication for Gramble

There just isn’t enough of these two interacting and honestly mean dialogue is some of the most fun to write.

Next of Kin

Just a nice little moment of Wambus and Gramble bonding over family stuff. I really like the dialogue and the comfy late-summer feeling of it.

More to Love

An alternate take on the ending of the quest where the journalist brings Gramble a scoopy banoopy and preying picantis. Snak violence happens. This was extremely fun to write and I think it stands out as one of the better action scenes I’ve done.

Babysitter

The story behind what happened to the snax Filbo was watching for Gramble. Also features Snorpy being a good bf.

The Ferris Wheel

Another fic that fills out the backstory for a particular line of dialogue, in this case, the moment when Chandlo and Snorpy make out on the ferris wheel. I just think it turned out extremely sweet while also illustrating Snorpy’s life falling apart before he goes to Snaktooth.

Gemini

Short, sweet Floofty horror. I’ve tried to write a follow up to this a few times in the past but I think the ending is so good it just doesn’t need anything more.

Shepherd

Shelda is an underrepresented character in fics and I wanted to do a character study on her and her motivations. Plus I really enjoy writing snak memories.

Frozen Pines

I know LizEgg nightmare fics are nothing new but I had a great time writing this and making it feel so cold.

Warm on One Side

I wrote this when I finally solidified my headcanon for Gramble’s relationship to his mother and I think it really provides a nuanced study of an abusive parent who’s also extremely troubled and desperately wants to do what they think is best for their child. It’s also a direct prequel to Home, which is about the moment Gramble finds out he’s been abandoned.

Fruit Juice

Floofty and Gramble interactions are also extremely underrated, but they’re fun because the characters are such polar opposites. Plus I love Floofty denying that they have emotions SO hard.

Cocoon

Written as a Floofty/Triffany/Wambus commission. Parenthood stuff is always interesting to explore as characters will always approach it different ways.

here’s my personal Bugsnax Petz headcanons bc I am really Thinkin About It

animals in the world of Bugsnax look like the animals in the early Petz games, which I think extends to the kinds of animals you can have as well, anything you could make in those games is an animal that probably exists

animals are just as wildly colored as Grumpuses. no real reason for this, I just think they are bc its fun

Filbo has a dog named Goofus, he’s a medium size dog with light blue fur

Lizbert and Eggabell probably have or have had hounds

Wambus and Triffany have horses without a doubt

Beffica has spiders or rats, for sure. the kind of animals other people usually dislike

Gramble doesn’t actually have any pets but he does volunteer a lot at local animal shelters. if he ever did get a pet, he’d have a massive dog of some kind

Wiggle has a chihuahua. every celebrity of her type does. probably has orange fur to match her and lots of pink accessories for every occasion

Cromdo has a big, fluffy persian type cat, its name is either Baby (as a joke on Baby Face) or he mockingly called it Lint when he got it as a kitten but the name stuck and now its “Lint (affectionate)”. its fur is a pastel yellow

Chandlo and Snorpy have two cats and their cats are mirror images of their owners, one who’s chill and very friendly and one who is high strung and skittish

Floofty has two rats, Pinky and Brain. they’re likely pastel colored

Shelda has a cat or two who are older just like her. they’re probably hairless cats, actually

the Journalist didn’t have any pets before, but they sure do share Goofus with Filbo now. Goofus loves them

How did raising Melodee go with Floofty? What was Melodee's first hobby/interest?

Raising Melodee was difficult, but a difficult journey that Floofty signed up for.

She was traumatized. Every time she'd wake up she expected to be back in her dorm with 5 other grumps. Now she wakes up alone, in a room to herself. It's warm here.

Nightmares were common. Sometimes Floofty would still be awake when it happened, able to console her, read her a story to help her get back to sleep. Sometimes they'd be asleep, and she'd be scared of waking them up, until one night they notice her standing in the doorway. An invite to wake them up if need be. No, they won't be mad. Yes, she can sleep in their bed tonight.

Floofty stops wearing the standard grey/white lab coat and wears colorful, fun lab coats. Different patterns every time. Sacrificing formality to make sure Melodee doesn't get reminded of the scientists in the lab.

Despite how much Floofty tries not to show it, they're caught sweeping the house for undesirable creatures, or even checking to see if their leg is still a little bit strawberry. Melodee simply asks,

"you thought you were somewhere else?"

There's a moment of silence, while Floofty tries to construct the best explanation for her.

"Yes. I thought I was somewhere far away."

"Was it scary?"

"Yes. Very scary."

She doesn't ask more. She understands.

Floofty takes her to meet with the other former test subjects, Emvee and Dill.

She's scared of Wambus, clinging to Emvee's legs until they tell her it's alright. They pick her up and show her around the farm. Emvee grows tired of the visit fast, though.

Dill doesn't remember much, thank goodness. They hate the cold more than anything in the world and Gramble has more than enough warmth to give. Melodee comments that the scientists thought Dill was going to die, in the most casual tone a child could have, leaving Gramble with an extra recurring nightmare. She also says she used to have a tail like Dill's.

There was a transition from liquid food to solid food for her. She hated trying new flavors.

She liked taking baths, but refused to be in the bathroom when the water was running.

She grabbed a handheld mirror, and found that she liked looking at her reflection. She knew from explanation that the image she saw was herself, but she never saw her face in the lab. It was different.

Floofty homeschools her until 3rd grade, where she was enrolled at the same school as Duree. She's quiet, but makes a couple friends, anyway.

There she found she liked to make things. She liked to draw, to write, to cook, to sew, to sing. She wasn't very good at any of them, but they made her happy.

She would eventually write a book about her origins and how they affected her growing up. She would visit the old lab and write notes on what she remembered, then turn them into chapters. They end up published on the shelf next to "I Was Right, But Not Because I Had Magical Powers"

SORRY we are not mutuals but i was literally thinking about this the other day. I have not figured them all out but heres my take (btw let me know if this is annoying ill delete it)

Filbo: page of blood (filbo is definitely a blood player, his reliance on others and his aspiration to be a mayor really fits that sort of dynalic. And i pick page because that seems to be the character arc that fits him best)

Wambus: i put him down as a knight of space mostly because of his association with plants, and how he seems to hide his feelings to an extent, though i also imagine life would fit him due to the association with food plants, his issues with money (and lifes association with wealth) and such

Beffica: she gave me trouble, the very very best i could come up with was thief of light but in more of the knowledge way than vriska, stealing information from others and then keeping the secrets for herself, though void could work as the inverse of light, but rage could also work because of her disdain for lies

Gramble: i picked maid of blood initially, relies on others to supply their aspect (relies kn bugsnax for bonds and friendship) but im not set on it, heart could also work well, also sorry no wiggle just bc i dont know her character well enough

Triffany: heir of time. She inherets her love of history from her grandmother, she has a natural affinity towards death and time, and also she and wambus are the ultimate space/time couple

Cromdo: super super iffy on him but i went with bard of hope, hope mostly because of his aspirations to have a karaoke bar and how his other job destroyed his hope but bard is just a guess

Snorpy: i went with prince of void, one who dwstroys void or destroys with void. He intends to destroy the void around bugsnax, and thus he mirrors a light player in his search for knowledge. He also destroys his relationship with chandlo with void, keeping secrets and inadvertently harming him

Chandlo: sylph of heart, he heals through the soul. He has shown to be able to help with emptional problems lile with eggabell and snorpy and all, though i dont really think theres too much he needs to have a character arc for, so a god tier wouldnt challenge him much

Floofty: okay initially i put thief of mind for floofty which idk i dont know if that class fits but mind seems to, they try to stay logical and impartial in most things and only really break this logical facade (from their view) to ask for the sweet snax at their sidequests whole thing, so mind for sure fits

And thats as far as i got lmao

There’s enough Bugsnax characters for 12 Homestuck classpects but the question is which is which

Completely forgot to mention it on here but I'm redoing my refs, not necessarily my designs (mainly for wambus and triffany) but more or so the clothes because I did a bit of digging and actually found some inspo which gave me proper ideas. Something I feel like I should mention is that the character hc designs and ocs designs may be a little complicated but for those of yall who've been wanting to draw any of hc designs im gonna release just a heads up for that (idk why I'm even saying this ik guess its just a heads up)

They won't be TOO complicated, cuz I'm inconsistent and know it'll be too hard to do a REALLY complicated design but uhh just wanted to ramble about that- all I can say is uhh I'm really tryna get all these done and keep em consistant for everyone because I know I haven't been good at that in the past, but considering what I have planned for Deadsnax these refs are gonna be real important!! <3 (also make sure to read tags if curious I put a bunch of stuff in them) Oh, also, chapter 2 is almost done, angst with a happy ending dw :)

ok here is the official frankie fluffyglass ceo of wigglefunny explanation of the plot of Something Ain't Right (this will be LONG)

It takes place a bit after The Cost of a Snack (as evidenced by Shelda having a new snakified leg), and starts out with Wambus internally monologuing about how he knows what the journalist (whom I'll be referring to as Stranger or "the stranger" for the rest of this post) did to Gramble, that specifically being feeding him bugsnax in his sleep. However, if you've read COAS I'm certain you recall that Wambus was not there and did not see what Stranger did. So how does he know they did it? The answer might surprise you: he doesn't.

Wambus is projecting. In the past (before the events of the game, and even before the events of The Fight), Wambus fed Gramble bugsnax. This is represented by the repeated motif of Kweebles rather than Strabbys. While in the present Gramble has a Strabby arm, when Wambus fed him bugsnax, he had a Kweeble arm instead. On the third page, when the stranger turns around and has Wambus's face, this is Wambus's conscience reminding him of what he did.

Wambus then turns to denial, asking himself different ways Gramble could have become snakified. Sleepwalking, lying about it, et cetera, but Wambus knows these aren't realistic. He knows what he (and by his own extension Stranger) did. Stranger being lit in red and Wambus being lit in green represent the respective bugsnax they gave Gramble. Also from this point on, Wambus isn't snakified, showing that the following events all take place in his mind rather than in reality.

Gramble's body being covered by black squares (which I'll refer to as censors) is Wambus's mind trying to block out things he doesn't want to see. Stranger showing up out of nowhere is kind of just an outlet for Wambus to incite his own self hatred. He hates and wants to kill the stranger for what they did, because he hates what he did in the past.

Throughout the ensuing fight, Stranger and their dialogue is censored. Why? Because Wambus isn't fighting the stranger. It's a reenactment of another horrible thing he did to Gramble in the past, that being The Fight. The censored dialogue is what Gramble said during the fight (which is irrelevant to the story), mirrored by Wambus parroting his own dialogue from then as well. That's why some of the dialogue doesn't seem to fit (see "Not when you've hurt so many", and him cutting himself off from saying "Weepy little rancher").

Then is the Big page, the only clear memory of the entire comic. He's blocked out so many things, but Wambus is never able to unsee the look of horror on Triffany's face when she witnessed The Fight. He's not looking at Gramble. He doesn't want to see Gramble. He can only clearly recall the instant he knew he was Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.

The following page is mostly a blur. He sees Triffany (with Filbo hiding behind her; the two of them lie to cover this up later by calling it a fight rather than a one-sided assault. Also I'll mention that Gramble was so out of it that he can't remember The Fight either, so literally nobody can contradict the lie), then he sees Gramble, and then everything is drowned out by the knowledge that He Is Guilty. The last panel shows him waking up (now snakified again, this is real) in horror. Triffany next to him is censored because he can't stand to think about her face, looking at what he did.

Ummmm yeah that's basically the story of Something Aint Right. Other stuff that didnt fit anywhere else is the main pop colors being Blue and Orange which are Wambus and Stranger's fur colors, and Gramble's hat eyes always staring at Wambus.

This is the official explanation of a weird surreal art piece I made that is supposed to be speculative but I love talking about my own work too much to keep it that way.

IM BEING SO FR RN I rewrote Spike's lore to properly fit into my AU, so expect another redesign and lore drop today (also Mirror Wambus design + lore drop because I'm silly!!!!!)
