So ten thousand years ago @wondergreat was asking me about older FF6 fic. Here's a teeeeeny tiny selection of stuff I managed to scrounge up. Please feel free to reblog with anything else you guys might have access to or old favorites! I've been toying with the idea for years of putting together an FF6 fanfic repository to have everything in one place, so I'd love more links, especially to fic that's no longer readily available/well known.

Of Blood and Tears by Junj (ensemble) - abandoned

Fifteen years on I balk a little at Edgar's suspect role in this (he's uh, not exactly portrayed positively), but was an interesting take on a war-torn, post-Kefka world. Was shaping up to be THE action-packed epic of the fandom, but Junj only wrote a handful of chapters before he fell off the face of the internet.

The Future is Written (FF6 novelization) by Dwalomen Bludwick (ensemble) - abandoned

I haven't read it in years so I can't vouch for quality, nor can I promise the chapters are even all available. But in terms of novelizations, which were short-lived and a dime-a-dozen in the early 2000s, I remember this one being pretty ambitious. It offered (mostly) original dialogue, character histories and an involved Vector plotline running parallel to the main one.

Terra's Shadow (complete) and sequel Shadow Realm (abandoned) by DarkSilk (Shadow/Terra)

I never got to read the original before it was lost in the Great NC-17 Purge of the early 2000s, but some angel of a fan reuploaded it in its entirety. At last I can read! The definitive fic for rarepair Terra/Shadow, and parsing through real quick, the quality of prose still stands up. I'm a little more familiar with with its unfinished sequel - not so keen on the first chapter character fridging, but notable for the tentative Shadow/Locke friendship, and Dog Fae Interceptor.

Brown and Green by Jackie Chiang (Celes/Locke) - complete

Oneshot with Celes and Locke characterization I'm actually onboard with. From the POV of early game Celes, still carving out her place in the group and trying to make sense of her new comrades. Might be the earliest example of the popular "Celes is not bothered by the cold" headcanon, which I'm always a fan of.

Absolute Zero - Miss Minerva (Locke/Celes) - abandoned

You know what's my jam? Fics that actually remember the world is an apocalyptic wasteland. Locke and Celes' journey in the midst of an impending ice age, told in a series of short vignettes. Really solid world building, and one of the more unique, eccentric Locke characterizations I've encountered (what is that accent? Cockney? Irish? idk but I dig it).

Ninth Dragon by Maggie Rennie (ensemble) - complete

Leap of Faith by Lunaludus Scribex (Shadow-centric) - incomplete (abandoned? the author still pops up every few years so no idea)

Catspaw by Amanda Swiftgold (Setzer-centric) - complete

Terra by Mintbaby (ensemble) - complete

Dark Empress by dk (ensemble, au) - incomplete but with a summary epilogue

Terra Branford's Flight of Fancy + Locke Cole's Final Repose by Scribe Figaro (ensemble) - complete (TBFoF was pulled during the NC17 purge and Scribe never re-uploaded it)

Wine, Women and Song by Themis (Setzer-centric) - complete

Good Enough by Lirillith (Locke/Terra) - complete

My personal favorites were written by Blademaster Lee (Lee Starnes) and Second Impact (Stephen Sibley) over at Fanfiction Paradise. They wrote Locke-centric fic that was a little darker, a little more adult than the usual offerings. Possibly even a little edgelordy. Unfortunately none of the links on the Web Archive work, so all I've managed to salvage was a single random chapter of Menage a Trois (still pretty decent!) and Locke's Scenario (less good and occasionally cringey, but SI's quality improved GREATLY between the two). I've been on the hunt for any of their stuff for about fifteen years, so if anyone has any of it saved, please, PLEASE send it my way. Please. P L E A S E. (please)
