ICJ ruling shows that ‘no state is above the law’: Maliki
Riyadh Maliki, Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs, has issued a statement responding to the International Court of Justice’s ruling on the emergency measures requested by South Africa in its genocide case against Israel over its war on the Gaza Strip.
Here is his full statement:
Palestine welcomes the significant order by the International Court of Justice in South Africa’s case against Israel under the Genocide Convention. In light of the incontrovertible evidence presented to the Court about the unfolding genocide, the ICJ ordered these provisional measures.
The ICJ ruling is an important reminder that no state is above the law or beyond the reach of justice. It breaks Israel’s entrenched culture of criminality and impunity, which has characterized its decades-long occupation, dispossession, persecution, and apartheid in Palestine.
Israel failed to convince the Court that it was not violating the Genocide Convention. The ICJ judges saw through Israel’s politicization, deflection, and outright lies. They assessed the facts and the law and ordered provisional measures that recognized the gravity of the situation on the ground and the veracity of South Africa’s application. Israel is accused of destroying an entire people and will now stand accused of Genocide, the crime of all crimes.
Palestine calls on all states to ensure respect for the order of the International Court of Justice, including by Israel. Governments must ensure they are not complicit in this genocide, starting with stopping arms trade with Israel. Governments must also endeavor to stop the industrial slaughter and destruction in Gaza. This is now a binding legal obligation.
The Palestinian people and leadership will be forever grateful to the people and goverment of South Africa for taking this bold step of active solidarity. We are also grateful to the millions of people who have not stopped taking to the streets around the world to protest the genocide and champion Palestinian rights to life and freedom.
Palestine will continue to work with allies to ensure an end to the genocide, accountability for the atrocious crimes, and the protection of our collective rights as peoples of the world to equal human rights, justice, and freedom. This is a fight for humanity the world cannot afford to lose.

Love to live in a country with a president who still has a hint of humanity. Love to see the international backlash against him pretty much saying "I don't think soldiers killing women and children is something I'd call a war". Actually I think if a country with a history of diplomatic neutrality says a situation is fucked up that means more (and more powerful) countries should've been saying this already

a good example of personal function being to a certain extent decoupled from "tha system" is that after 1991, many of the big boys from the central planning bureau of the soviet union went to wall street to become analysts and portfolio managers at private banks, and performed at par with their american colleagues. the world around them changed suddenly, they took a look at where they can apply themselves at the highest level, and went there

Xavier Bettel, 51, the current minister for Foreign Affairs in Luxembourg, previously has taken the office of prime minister of Luxembourg for ten years. His Slavic appearance the man might owe to his great-grandfathers: one was Russian and the other was a Polish-Jewish. His mother is a grandniece of the Russian famous composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

favorite frev historian?
Anon, I wanted to give you a more complex answer about the historians, but some complications occured so allow me to go straight to the #1.
He is a little less known, but it's a french-born polish historian named Stefan Meller. He is one of the two authors of an excellent monograph about the French Revolution, the most solid book on the field that I have read. It's enormous and nearly as thick as my edition of Les Miserables, and it's a shame it wasn't translated to french or english.
Aside from that he is a Camille Desmoulins biographer, and despite the bio being simply good and decently accurate, it's entertaining as Meller shows a lot of sympathy for the historical figure. At times it sounds like a parent-teacher conference; Miss, Camille did wrong, but he is a good and talented child. Once again, I wish it was translated into a more readable language.

Okay but re: those tags. I can't believe I'm saying this in defence of the Pope of all people, but I think many leftist online spaces, especially from non-Catholic countries, just don't get WHAT a big deal is that the Pope is Argentinian. He's from a third-world country — and sure, that's an outdated political definition, but it's how he's regarded
The fucking Vatican, i.e. the Rome-based, very European clerical establishment, regard him as dangerously progressive. The far-right wing Catholic circles in the United States (who are, in my Italian opinion, way more conservative than any Catholic I've ever met growing up in Popetown) absolutely hate his guts. There have been campaigns to discredit him since the moment he got elected, and even more so when he dared to make controversial edicts such as ordering dioceses to sell some of their possession to put more funds into charity missions.
I'm not claiming this man is #woke btw. He's said some things that are just as bad as you'd expect, especially re: reproductive rights and queer rights, and of course he IS the head of state of an organisation that's the product and tool of centuries of European colonialism. But he's also been renovating the College of Cardinals (=body who elect the pope) and for the first time in history, the percentage of European cardinals is below 50%. He's a mixed bag but he's wa, way more "political" than most of the Vatican are comfortable with.
tldr; 100% when he says shit like "let refugees in" and "humanitarian law must be respected" he actually means it. Vatican City has a non-indifferent ~weight when it comes to worldwide humanitarian crises, and his weekly reminders not to please fucking bomb civilians are more of a net positive contribution than anything the European Union hve done since this latest conflict started. I appreciate him speaking up

This was the entire statement... wow they're not even hiding it anymore.
