i watched Don (2006) recently, and spoiler: i don't like it.
this film piqued my curiosity because of the poster and in general the aesthetics, which seems quite inspired by the Wachowskis' Matrix (1999). After all, this film sets a new standard for action films.
Action films before The Matrix were power fantasies featuring macho-men and explosions everywhere. The Wachowski sisters came in with their fashionable hero(ine), their choreographed action scenes modelled on Hong Kong action films, their abundant use of slow-motion, spinning cameras and other filmmaking techniques that make Neo look cool. The quintessence of coolness being achieved in the iconic 'bullet time scene' which combines all the above elements.
so when i saw, the theatrical release poster of the film Don (2006) i wondered if it was an Indian remake of the Wachowski sisters' masterpiece because why not ? after a quick Wikipedia research, I realised that it actually was the remake of the Hindi film of 1978 and, on paper, that sounds like a great idea. revamping an action film from the late 70s with new filmmaking techniques in a post-Matrix era; that makes sense, I was quite optimistic.
unfortunately all the inventive filmmaking techniques are used just to make Shah Rukh Khan cool and every other scene is mid. After the intermission, we even abandon the green filter because apparently for the filmmaker The Matrix = green filter. like i said, The Matrix emulated Hong Kong martial arts films for their action scenes, and so did Bollywood films in the 80s. so why does Farhan Akhtar (director of Don (2006)) decides to emulate the worst of Hollywood incomprehensible action scenes. Its countless cunts which create superficial 'smoothness'. why? my little theory is that Farhan Akhtar just want to make his protagonist 'look cool' but with a very superficial understanding of what makes a protagonist cool.
in this film, Shah Rukh Khan plays a dual role: the cruel drug lord Don and his lookalike Vijay, a kind-hearted man from humble origins. but he's too busy trying "to look cool", his acting is identical whether he plays Don or Vijay. moreover, we minimize how cruel Don is because of the "coolness" of Shah Rukh Khan. his "wittiness" defuses the emotional scenes that require seriousness.
to conclude, i'm so happy The Matrix was such an influential film but unfortunately people all around the world liked it for superficial reasons. for so many people, The Matrix is just green filter and slow motion, and that saddens me.

The Indian Weddings of Shenanigans and Hues
In a tryst with the garland vendor, I completely forgot about a secret rendezvous we arranged with the henna maestros of our region. A love story of our own unveiled as we sat beneath the summer warmth and weaved a way through the wedding menage. A proposal was made with a nod ensuite and thus began the wondrous journey of Indian matrimony, flourishing under the bated breath of every member whose role was inevitably pre-decided since the day the knee was bent. In a flurry of emotions, one seemed to forget the timeline that lay bare, a sordid affair, it seemed, of only allowing four months to hustle our bustle.
The first family wedding, first of six, as the grandchildren were now adult-feet-tall, each in line for partaking in the ceremonies of the Gods. We were told it was practice for when our time came and were made the holly beneath which all real-life jokes were cracked. Livid with responsibilities, we each trudged along a path more devious than the other but plastered smiles on our faces in the name of beauty. The streets of Old Delhi that once lay in the great Mughal rulers’ wake was rummaged by my kin to procure in bulk items of class at minimal rates, for obvious reasons. Coloured drapes with hues of the summer blue were bought to decorate the house. Sarees with great works of beads and ancient thread skill were added to a trousseau so vast that the onlooker would have to ‘aww’ in awe of our splendour and sinned in the thought of a class unknown. Having gathered the cosmetic part of a bright celebration, the decor called its turn. Venues were recced and caterers bartered, dates meddled with to fit a spring collection, gardens laden with fresh seeds and alcohol stalked till the ceilings. Still months to go, deviously trudging on to manage this theatrical asylum I call home, we acrobats of a matrimonial kind swarm in bee-lines around a marry-go-round.
First came the turmeric ceremony where the already coloured groom was scrubbed with a paste to make him fairer within a dearth of two hours, tops. Like polishing him since birth had no miraculous effect, but this holy matrimony pleased the God of colour. Besides wrecking my washroom and turning it a Coldplay “Yellow,” it did nothing good to turn him into the poster child of Fair & Handsome. Now that the groom was very dignifiedly bound, gagged and threatened to not meet his beau for ill will befall one and all, the alcohol bottles were broken open and downed aplenty! You see, in our family, no wedding starts without a compulsory shot system - vodka, spices and Indian drama being reciped for an auspicious gala. Soon after followed a flurry of the many, many dance numbers prepped by age groups from in-womb to one leg in the grave; the night carried on until dawn hit, and nobody besides our feline friends was awake, with barking ensuite. Suddenly, with sheer panic the mothers were wide upright, running helter-skelter, realizing it’s D-Day.
Golden threads laced with beads and intricate embroidery woven within the lush patterns carefully procured were placed atop the groom with his mother sowing in the holy threads into his turban with chanting galore in the back; women of all whims reciting divine rhythms with a smile playing on their redden lips escorted him to mount the horse leading him to his ultimate destination. I will not dwell more in depth on how the ceremonies play out since I’m sure Bollywood movies have shown the entire world of the generic process that follows (an eight-hour ordeal where we stay cock-eyed awake from dusk to dawn, inevitably looking like something out of a World War Z). Oh well, for me as an Indian, I’m best far away from this madding crowd!

Week 4.1 - In Class - 1 on 1 with Tatiana
My 1 on 1 session with Tatiana went really well. I showed her some of my slides from my Contextual Review Mapping and we talked about my next steps. I didn’t have any experimentation at this stage, however our discussion helped pave possible directions for me to go in. One of the things we discussed was the reasoning behind my choice to do a publication. My reasoning is that I will be able to be more experimental with each of the pages. I feel like with posters, it’s more restricted to one design on each poster compared to a publication where I can talk and show many things at once. I am not ruling out doing a poster series, however at the moment I think doing a publication would be more beneficial, even if I haven't had much experience with it especially when it comes to printing and binding. Some of the other things we talked about -
- How will I design
- How will I show Info - Infographics?
- Which movies will I compare
- Will I include a synopsis of each of the movies?
- What kind of cultural aspects can I show? - Storylines, Characters, Clothing, Messaging
- Critique on the way Bollywood has adapted aspects of the Hollywood original
- Use minimal text, more visual, playful, fun, cool
Overall this 1 on 1 session was quite valuable as Tatiana was able to help me think of questions I should ask myself before getting into the making process straight away.

It is also an advertisement platform where you can showcase your product or services. You get reviews of your product in the form of comments.
Political events are fully captured on Twitter and people are expressing and debating about the actions and economy taking leads in tweets. The news of celebrity is spread via Twitter quicker than any other channel of publishing or broadcasting.
Using Twitter as an open forum platform, people have started analyzing, understanding the mindsets and trends in the current patterns of any topic that are being published as tweets. Twitter has become a game changer for economic and political events.
Minimalism is the key feature of Twitter. Short description and hit the target of what you want to say. Just publish it and be prepared for all types of reply. Widen your horizon with what’s happening in the world. Anyways, the world has become small by connecting the dots all over the places.
Twitter has set a benchmark in publishing the posts in short and brief terms. It takes no time to revert or retweet the post that is being published. Twitter just rocks!

Indian ruling-party member offers bounty for beheading of Bollywood’s biggest female star
By Vidhi Doshi, Washington Post, November 20, 2017
The release of a highly anticipated Bollywood blockbuster has been delayed after a politician from India’s governing party offered a bounty of $1.5 million for the heads of the movie’s star and director amid outcry that the film distorted Hindu legend.
The movie “Padmavati”--depicting the life of legendary 14th-century queen Padmini--sparked the latest in a string of flash points from right-wing groups that perceive more clout under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has courted Hindu nationalists as part of his political base.
Often Hindu outrage is stoked by little more than rumors, including deadly riots and vigilante violence over false claims that Muslims were killing cows sacred to Hindu culture. But this time with the film, the reason for the outrage is even more puzzling.
Members of the Rajput Karni Sena, a group associated with the warrior Rajput caste, claim it misrepresents history by depicting a love affair between the queen and a Muslim invader. The group is further upset that the queen’s midriff is exposed in a song sequence. They have called for a nationwide strike and backed the death threats against star Deepika Padukone and the film’s director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
But Bhansali insists that the plot has no such love scene. And the movie trailer pays ample homage to Rajput bravery and their role in resisting Muslim armies.
The death threats--against one of India’s most popular actresses and a prominent filmmaker--brought quick backlash. They were sharply denounced by leaders of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, and the home minister in the southern Karnataka state, Ramalinga Reddy, ordered protection for Padukone and her family.
Also at stake are the boundaries for the world’s most prolific film industry, in which some directors have increasingly tried to push back against decades of film censorship for political reasons.
Chief ministers of a number of states demanded that controversial scenes be removed before the film is screened. The movie’s producers have indefinitely delayed the film’s release.
The news agency ANI reported that Surajpal Amu, a state-level media coordinator of the BJP, told a rally Sunday: “We will reward the ones beheading [Padukone and Bhansali] with Rs 10 crore, and also take care of their family’s needs.” A crore signifies 10 million rupees.
Amu repeated the statement to the Indian Express. Video from the rally also showed Amu saying, “There’s no need to discuss making cuts to the film. We won’t allow it to play in theaters at all.”
An official from the BJP condemned Amu and said the party was considering taking legal action against him.
“It’s absolutely appalling. What have we gotten ourselves into? And where have we reached as a nation?” said the actress Padukone, who plays the leading role of Queen Padmavati and who recently appeared in “XXX: Return of Xander Cage” alongside Vin Diesel.
A member of the Rajput Karni Sena group, Mahipal Singh Makrana, responded in a self-made video, saying, “Rajputs never raise a hand on women, but if need be, we will do to Deepika what Lakshman did to Surpanakha,” referring to a Hindu epic in which a man cuts off a woman’s nose. The group has also vandalized cinemas, burned posters and threatened to break the legs of actor Ranveer Singh, who plays villainous Muslim invader Alauddin Khilji.
The violent reaction to the film’s release further suggests a groundswell of conservatism in Modi’s India. Bollywood films in the 2000s were known for breaking taboos, as they increasingly began to show on-screen kissing, live-in relationships between unmarried couples and interreligious romances, most famously in the 2008 historical drama “Jodhaa Akbar.”
Some members of Modi’s party have made efforts to minimize Muslims’ role in Indian culture and history. Recently, members of the governing party misleadingly said that the Taj Mahal was built on the site of an old Hindu temple and that it “did not represent Indian culture.” The Taj Mahal was built by the Muslim Mughal king Shah Jahan.
Although members of right-wing groups have been briefly arrested for making threats in the past, the government rarely pursues legal action against them.

Shraddha looks endearing in one of the stills as she holds a mic. With her hair tied and minimal make-up look, she is all set to make your heart skip a beat.
In the other still, with a guitar hung on her shoulder, Shraddha aka Riya Somani is seen sharing a soulful kiss with Arjun aka Madhav Jha. Madhav being the middle-class Bihari fellow is seen hopping on a scooter, while Shraddha's appearance oozes out class.
So far, the unmissable chemistry between the two has been able to create a positive buzz about the movie and they seem to be lost in love . This is the first time Arjun and Shraddha will be seen sharing screen space with each other. They both went through intense training sessions for basketball. Half Girlfriend is set to hit the theatres on May 19, 2017. In the movie, Arjun plays the role of Bihari boy who enters an esteemed college in Delhi. He falls for a girl named Riya Somani, but she makes herself his 'Half Girlfriend'. New relationship status, indeed! I did these back in 2013/14, there were a few of us doing minimal posters in Telugu - Chitram Bhalaare Vichitram and Bees Ka Dus are two other pages that come to my mind. We were all super inspired by Akshar Pathak's bollywood posters that were a rage back then! pic.twitter.com/faPPOKe8DR
