This mockingbird told me that it is SO done with winter. I have bad news for it about February in Pennsylvania.

Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), taken February 10, 2025, in Georgia, US
Getting a tasty sip of water! He was nervous to drink with me there and sat in a tree eyeing the bird bath for a few minutes, but he was brave and took the risk! Once he realized it was fine, he even came back for seconds later. His little drinking face is very cute!

Let's gooooooOOOOOOOOOO!!!
So, I've been hinting at this for a while now, but my little Tumblr side project, the State Bird Initiative, is going to nominate the American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) as a candidate for Florida state bird, at least here on Tumblr for polling. Wouldn't be the only person to recommend that, and this real-world attempt to do so, as seen in the article above, is one in a series of attempts to choose the flamingo as Florida's state bird. Because...yeah, duh, it's an obvious choice. It's also lobbying to elect the Florida Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) as the state songbird, which is a thing in some states. Not a massive fan of that, BUT, I am a fan of BOTH of these birds being considered, and the scrub jay is another candidate that will be nominated for State Bird by the State Bird Initiative here on Tumblr.
Florida residents! The official vote for this bill starts in March! If you're interested in making this a reality, talk to folks and promote the idea! If nothing else, this proves that state birds actually can be a legislative focus, and could be used to promote conservation and ecological knowledge in residents of these states, especially for kids! And hey, if any state needs more focus on education, it's definitely Florida. On stuff that isn't just birds, obviously, BUT IT'S A START

"MOCKINGBIRD'S LESSON" from FIELD NOTES, a zine I made for my bird simp poems out of paper, photos, tape, and Birds & Blooms.
Many of my neighborhood mockers went quiet in late April, so I told myself a story about it that's admittedly more projection than ornithological fact.
Poem text under the cut:
Noon is more still in the spring because love makes the mockingbird lose – not forget – all long-hundred of her songs Can you image? Seasons of sermons Dolloped out from high phone lines then one day the gift that defines you just vanishes Do you think stuck between hoarseness or silence she frets over whether her rasping is lovely? Or do her chicks and her groom reassure her at night in the nest that what separates love song from noise is the love, not the song? Do you think she finds it cruel when they are what brings her talent to its knees? Or does behind her breastbone warm because she sees how adoration lets her guide another sound into her throat, one all her own? Do you think she enjoys it when her voice is quiet Or does her head become a fizzy bottle shaken Until summer bursts with pent-up song? Do you think – you could love me again in the summer despite us not dancing to mockingbird time? Or have you not noticed I am already quiet for you?

Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), taken March 9, 2025, in Georgia, US
I haven't been out in a few days, so have this month-old mockingbird lol. There's something about the composition of this photo that is just really nice. I love the lighting, and the way the mockingbird kind of blends into the background is visually appealing! This specific pair has made a nest in a tree next to my house, so we may get to see babies at the feeders this spring!

Fledgeling mockingbird being attended by a parent.
These photos are public domain because I took them and I said so.

[ID: Four photos showing a fledgeling mockingbird, a young mockingbird with all its feathers, but is still being cared for by its parents, in a stretch of short grass with taller grass filling the background. Both mockingbirds are light grey with white bellies, and darker wings, with the parent being larger. The first photo shows the fledgeling crouching in the grass, pointing to the left, with its body lowered. The second photo shows the fledgeling with its back to the camera to show the white under its long tail, while the parent stands in front of it, with its mouth open. The next photo shows the parent motion blurred as they run off to the left, leaving the fledgeling continuing to crouch in place. The last photo shows the fledgeling looking off to the left where its parent is out of frame, its mouth open as it waits for more food. End ID.]
Edit. Hey wait. This video might be short enough to put here...
[ID: A video clip of the two birds above, with the fledgeling giving short, high-pitched calls as it begs for food. The only other sounds are the wind and cars driving past. End ID.]
