here is etho's POV of that fluff fic I wrote... I really don't know why I wrote this other than I am procrastinating ! hehe. and to get reacquainted with etho's pov... it has been a while!

it's the beginning of the server. the night is dark, they haven't had a chance to light the place up much. There are only a few houses surrounding spawn and etho has a bed in a cave, and that's about it.

still, the guys are meeting at spawn to celebrate, in the little ring created by the surrounding structures. they have a bonfire there, and some torches set up for safety.

etho's been around long enough that he knows how it'll go by now. they'll drink and goof around and come up with plans and also bdubs will be there, cracking jokes, the hair curling softly over his forehead.

tonight will be a little different than usual. etho has a plan.

etho approaches the group, silhouetted dark against the fire. they've already gotten started without him, and the sound of laughter and chatter spills across the plains. genny spots him first. "hey, it's etho!" he calls, and a dozen or so voices echo his greeting.

etho pulls near. bdubs is smiling at him, face glowing in the firelight. "hi," he says. his hair is curling over his forehead, just as etho imagined it.

etho can hardly make eye contact. "hi yourself." he gathers his nerves and plants himself directly beside bdubs, tries to ignore the way bdubs' eyes widen slightly.

genny is passing out beer. he hands some down to bdubs.

bdubs wiggles a can etho's direction. "want some?"

etho bites his lip. his plan would likely be easier to enact with a little liquid courage. "sure," he says, taking the can from bdubs.

etho hazards a glance at bdubs' face. it's mostly neutral, but one of his eyebrows is raised incredulously. etho smiles to himself. bdubs' face always shows exactly how he's feeling, no matter how hard he tries to hide it.

"you're finally joining us plebs?" bdubs asks.

etho pops the tab on the can with a hiss. "it's a special occasion," he says. "new world and everything." he sneaks another look at bdubs face, notes the flush on bdubs' cheeks. etho's heart knocks in response. a brand new world, full of new possibilities.

etho takes a big sip of his beer to distract himself, choking as the carbonation hits his throat.

"hey, hey, hey!" bdubs laughs. "easy, there!"

etho coughs. "I-- I swear I know what I'm doing."

bdubs is almost entirely turned towards him, the rest of the group forgotten in the shadows. "oh, obviously." his eyes are glittering with mirth.

genny peers over bdubs' shoulder. "no way, is etho drinking?"

the statement draws the attention of the others. "I never thought I'd see the day," millbee remarks.

etho shrinks a little from their attention. bdubs leans back on his hands, his shoulder brushing etho's. "he's handling himself better than you, genny. I don't think any of us can forget that time you ended up naked in the center of spawn after mc drank you under the table."

the group breaks into delighted laughter. yes, it had been quite the incident.

"he's got an iron constitution," genny sniffs. "don't let his shrimpy facade confuse you."

"excuse me!" mc splutters.

etho laughs with the rest of the group, leaning into bdubs' side gratefully. bdubs tilts his head back, smiling up at etho. "you were there for that, right?"

etho shakes his head regretfully. "no, but I definitely heard about it."

bdubs pouts, then brightens. "I bet we can get genny to do something crazy tonight while you're here. want to bribe him to dance or something?"

etho chuckles, leaning further into bdubs side. the warmth in his chest is almost unbearable. "would we even need to bribe him?"

"good point."

etho has a few more beers, the warmth in his chest extending out to his fingertips, leaving him pleasantly drowsy. bdubs is so funny etho can't stop laughing, even though he doesn't know what he's laughing about anymore. all he can see is bdubs' curls shining in the firelight, the warm curve of bdubs' cheek. then there's the flash of bdubs' wide brown eyes as he catches etho's gaze, sharing the punchline of the joke with him. etho can't look away.

the warmth is ripped from him unexpectedly, and etho blinks, perturbed. bdubs is leaning away from him, towards the group. talking about... a nether hub?

etho shakes himself, trying to sober up. he'd almost forgotten the plan. "I'll do it!" he says. the group blinks at him, faces blank, and bdubs favors etho with one of those incredulous eyebrows. "really?" bdubs asks.

etho tries to will down the heat in his cheeks, but he can't stop the smile spreading across his face. "yeah, it sounds fun."

bdubs' answering smile is brilliant. "yeah, it could be fun. I'll help too."

etho sinks back, satisfied. plan: executed. guude officializes it.

"you know, they're going to hold you to that," bdubs cautions, turning to etho as the group resumes their conversations. "you can't wiggle out of it by claiming you were under the influence."

"I know." etho narrows his eyes. did bdubs really think etho had only agreed to do the work because of the alcohol in his system? "I really have been wanting to work on something big. a community project."

bdubs looks unconvinced.

and, well, honesty is the best policy. "something with you," etho blurts.

etho's toes are curling with embarrassment, but maybe exposing that little piece of his heart was worth it. bdubs' cheeks are heating up spectacularly.

"aww," bdubs says. his voice is steady, but his eyebrows are jumping all over the place. and then he's off to the races, babbling about building plans. etho sinks back into bdubs' warmth with a fond chuckle.

etho is comfortable, drowsy, and a little drunk. goal achieved, he's happy to nod off on bdubs' shoulder. bdubs doesn't let him.

"tired?" bdubs asks, running a hand down etho's side. etho can feel bdubs' voice vibrate in his own chest.

etho nods, reluctant. "should probably go to bed."

"come on then," bdubs says, rising. etho wants to cry from the lack of warmth at his side. bdubs pulls etho up easily, steadying etho as the world spins around him.

"I'll walk you back to your house," bdubs face swims in to view. "protect you from any creepers."

etho's laugh carries him forwards, bdubs hands gently catching him by the shoulders. "right, you'll protect me." etho snorts. bdubs' face is so close.

bdubs pulls back, indignation painted across his features. "what, you don't believe me? I'm a stone-cold monster killing machine! creepers run from me, skeletons cower in fear!"

he's too cute. etho gathers bdubs into his arms, noting how well he fits in etho's embrace. "I'm so glad I met you, bdubs" etho murmurs, hiding his flushed face in bdubs' hair.

again, his honesty pays back in dividends. "o-oh," bdubs stutters. "that's very… you're sweet." when etho pulls back, bdubs' face is bright red, he looks gobsmacked.

"I think I can make it back on my own," etho says. "thanks for offering." bdubs is still gazing at him, lips parted. etho wants to cradle his face, wants to brush the curls off his forehead. he wants to step back into bdubs' space and feel that warmth fill him up again, never wants it to leave.

but, no, that was not the plan tonight. and some things, etho thinks, should be acted on only when sober.

etho gathers his dwindling self control and straightens. "goodnight," he says, wincing at his own abruptness. and then he turns on his heel, unsteadily makes his way back to his little cave in the ground. he has a nether hub to begin planning.

Someone new is starting to watch Mindcrack on purpose? And really cares about them? I'm gonna start crying

I did really like their dynamic, I loved OOGE, I loved all the collabs, I loved their UHC team and I miss them. You wrote many thoughts about them so beautifully. I like how you talk about Guude pushing Etho's buttons, I want to point out Etho loves doing this to Guude too but pretends that he isn't. Like that spider eyes prank with the golden record, taunting Guude with what he could never find on his own, but framing it to his audience as a gift because he knew it would bother Guude even more when fans left stupid comments -- the ultimate prank. And I also think it's funny when Guude takes Etho's trolling at face value. During the Team Canada mushroom prank Etho or Beef left an additional sign that blamed Pause entirely for the prank, despite the wording not making sense out of context, but Guude either missed the other signs or they were blown up. He ends up believing Etho is entirely innocent even though he's acting shady (hanging with Pause, spying on Guude, staying on the server late the day before waiting for Guude to log off) until Etho himself admits it accidentally. I love that moment. You can hear so much in their voices.

About Etho and Bdubs leaving Mindcrack and in some defense of Guude, there were a few more things going on that less people knew about. The reason contracts were involved was because Guude hoped that being a company would give members legal protections, and enable them to make a living since a lot of Mindcrack was collab content that was only being watched from a few peoples' POVs (meaning smaller members who were big parts of the videos didn't get views or make money off their projects as easily). This was also the intent of the Mindcrack Podcast channel. The reason legal protections were so important at this time was because Nintendo was blocking any LPs of their games, which hugely affected several Mindcrackers, but prominently Pause. Around the same time Millbee was also struggling to get his social media accounts verified so that he could get a YouTube Partnership. Then his channel was deleted over a minor censoring error in a dating sim LP. Other Mindcrackers had issues with people stealing videos, builds, and impersonating them online. The reason for the fall out with Bdubs and Generikb was because they were being paid under the table for undisclosed advertising of scammy servers to their largely underage fanbases, and Guude had strong moral oppositions and didn't want Mindcrack associated with illegal advertising. They've since stopped this though. Guude and Bdubs also partially made up a few years ago and met up again in person, and Etho has played on either the Mindcrack season 9 or 10 server briefly and all of them have always been whitelisted to my understanding and are considered VIP members.

I wish they would still play together like old times though. It's been a decade now since Mindcrack was in its peak, and almost a decade since Etho left. I miss the pranks, UHCs, collabs, RftW, CTM maps, DvZ, dragon fights, death games, podcasts, building games, roleplay, minigames, PlayMindcrack, Crackpack, and everything they did together. I'm just glad we have Hermitcraft, that Etho's still here, that some things are still the same or changed in ways better than I could imagine, but it'll always be bittersweet.

I have generated some thoughts about guudetho, a ship which I have never before considered, using my two monthly allocated brain cells from the inbox mine union. These are RPF flavored but really just analysis after watching hundreds of hours of etho content over the last two years.

I’ve watched a lot of older videos w guude and etho and honestly the dynamic is like…guude pushes etho’s buttons by saying things etho will have to cut from his videos. lol

There’s more to the dynamic there, though. Guude helped etho come out of his small town shy kid shell and made a space for him to have real close friends to goof around with online. Three clips I’m thinking of:

1. Etho talking to guude about being bummed he wasn’t invited to Mindcrack right away, and Guude saying he didn’t realize Etho wanted to join because he thought Etho was busy doing his single player. (# Unrequited pining tag)

2. Etho basically writing a love letter to collaborative SMP servers in his let’s play where he said they were the future of the medium. (Guys please let him in he wants to play touys let him in let him be friends)

3. The clip from one of the secret streams where he talks about why he left Mindcrack. When Etho got choked up talking about leaving Mindcrack…the subtle betrayal due to the potential that he would have to expose his real identity to the group to stay a member (and potentially some issues related to his other friends including his bestie Bdubs being ousted at the same time)

A lot of Etho’s relationship to Guude is tied to his experience with Mindcrack, which makes it really tragic. The last few videos of his Mindcrack series where he’s walking around and barely anyone is on the server are eerie to watch as a viewer now. The dramatic irony is almost physically painful. Very weird pieces of media to watch as someone who only started watching vids from the Mindcrack era recently.

Guide still has positive things to say about Etho and Bdubs based on that recent drunk stream, but that bridge was probably burned a long time ago.

Juxtaposed with these things:

Hermitcraft six Etho skipping the season of hermitcraft because he thought his viewers didn’t care for it (no one wanted to play touys and he didn’t have strong relationship with any hermits that weren’t former Mindcrackers)

Hermitcraft seven Etho rejoining because (?)

(mostly only hung out with bdubs, beef, and doc. )

Hermitcraft ten Etho’s relationship with the hermits. (Friends to play with and a nice stable community-he feels safe and is coming out of his little goofball shell again)

alright. alright its time, ive put together enough for this-- this is more so a means to expose/explain to new fans an old era of mcyt thats is kinda hard to access. admittedly i only kept this to nebris/etho because itd just be too hard to piece all missing bits of Death Games together.... its not nearly as wild or in depth as present day things but its dear to me.... old fan art/fic is what got me obsessed w these two back in the day and their dynamic is fun!! and i think its worth exposing ppl to some of this old etho lore :)

nebris+ethoslab was a popular pair back in 2012-2014 era Mindcrack fandom. i assume most of yall know who etho is but nebris was also a member of the server. He was often regarded as cunning and sly, and referred to as "cheaty nebris" for various reasons (whether it was the insane amount of obsidian he managed to acquire for his base, or how he miraculously survived a fight in UHC while barely losing a heart). now why did they become a popular pair?? well.

Death games-- Etho's "game" he came up with in mindcrack s3, is mostly where it took off. They had many interactions in the forms of pranks and whatnot prior (nebris with 'team america', pranking team canada), but this is kinda where a dynamic formed-- Etho's pov starts with him getting back at mcgamer and nebris for killing pause multiple times (streamed here). The game's rules are that etho kills them a total of four times, or they can kill each other to reduce the kill count on their heads. This is definitely where etho gained his reputation of being scary back then lol. Nebris' first perspective on the matter is here.

in both of those first videos, Etho's ganged up on them in a livestream with nebris, mc, and millbee when they went to his base... in which he quickly kills them off with ease. From there is escalates!

theres undoubtedly potentially more bits of interactions out there and that is one of the problems of these old videos... theres lots of them, theyre long, and not all the titles give away if its related. Eventually i will build a more solid playlist but this is just death games!

there is a good backlog of fanfiction out there, i can tell you that. dig into the depths of dreamwidth, even. im sure theres quite a lot of fan art strewn across tumblr entirely untagged. regardless, its was surely one the first popular ships that characterized etho in his exaggerated mysterious self that people do with him today.

I'm serious though. cleo started playing minecraft (and uploading on youtube) at the same time as bdubs. she was friends w vechs who was THE map maker (think super hostile, race for the wool. she played all the same maps etho and bdubs did, competed in the same RFTW competitions. etho was also friends w vechs too lol). she played w zisteau, pauseunpause, and millbee– all whom were later invited to join mindcrack and went on to befriend etho and bdubs. i don't think she was invited to join mindcrack for one simple reason and it's unfortunately... you guessed it... good ol' fashioned sexism

i'm just so happy that cleo is now finally getting her due. the life series really opened so many doors for her and now she's getting invited to other smps by scott and has made a bunch of friends she wouldn't have made otherwise. and also finally at long last... clethubs
