Fun thing i realised when looking closer at the staircase of this swedish 1959 aperment building is that they cut costs by having terrazzo as the stairs "side border"
Heh, now when i think about, this is how most of the 1960s public place staircases look like
Distracting you with more expensive stone at some very visible section, and then having cheaper materials for the rest of it (or materials that are easier to work with, or more durable etc etc)
Also, note the VERY typical call back to. Some sort pseudo - ancient greece pattern on the wall
I dont know what was up with the 1960s and this staircase wall pattern in aperment buildings but they LOVE it. At some point anyway. i talked about this pattern before. And back then i noted that some sort of later renovation trend in stockholm might also be responible for it... i am unsure. but it is everywhere anyway
(One can also see how the decorative border on the wall lines up with the staircase, which is a neat design feature these sort massproduced staircases for aperment buildings in sweden useally have)

I finally found the earlier photo post I was thinking of, with the architecture all sorta looking the same:
Still taking some getting used to, but hey. It's similar in a way with the big wave of post-WWII British houses like we lived in before.
I got out and did a little more poking around lovely Rosengård this evening before it got dark, since it wasn't pissing rain. Mostly centered around the nearby shopping center here.
I really haven't been getting out nearly enough for a good while now, which has been doing some fun feedback loops with my mental health and how life has been looking in general. It hasn't been good, y'all.
So, a couple days ago I decided to fire up Pokemon Go for the first time since heading into that big health crash several years back, and have been using that as an excuse to drag my wheelie ass out for some more fresh air.
Random snapshot I ended up taking in game, at one end of a route starting from the shopping center and snaking over into some other section of apartments where I didn't actually get any photos because it didn't occur to me. They all look pretty much the same, anyway. They introduced the routes in game since I stopped playing before.
One of these days, I will try that Afghani buffet. It looks pretty good. This did not seem to be the time to drop in on my own, however. Even if I'd had any payment cards on me today.
Detouring toward a gym over in a slightly different direction. Hadn't been up this way before. Looks remarkably like more of the same Million Program apartment development that I was kinda expecting.
Heading back over this other pedestrian/bike overpass in the direction of home, after reversing course back by the shopping center. Starting to get later and dimmer--though, I am relieved to see it this light after 6 p.m. as Spring finally approaches.

a summary of the swedish million programme
qouted abstract of this academic article:
"The Million Homes Programme: a review of the great Swedish planning project"
Abstract
The first decades of the post‐war era saw a large and quickly growing need for new housing. In Sweden, rapid urbanization, growing prosperity and demands for higher housing standards led to years‐long housing queues. The housing shortage became a political liability for the ruling Social Democratic party. To end the housing shortage once and for all, the Swedish parliament decided that a million new dwellings should be built in the period 1965 to 1974 and this was achieved.
When the Million Homes Programme, as it came to be called, had reached barely half‐way, the housing shortage was replaced by a housing surplus, partly caused by the rapid expansion of the housing stock and by the fact that economic growth gave way to stagnation. At the same time, criticism began to be heard about what some people perceived as uniform and poor architecture and, since then, the Million Homes Programme has never ceased to engage people and provoke debate. Most of the buildings and areas of this era have survived quite well with routine maintenance, but in several multifamily housing areas more thoroughgoing measures have been needed. The development patterns can be divided into six categories: everything from maintenance and conventional daily care to large‐scale turn‐around and demolition.
The housing construction of the ‘record years’ is typical of its period in modern Swedish history. In the 1960s the ambition was to create an exemplary welfare state – many people no doubt imagined the best in the world – and for this ambition the spacious and ultramodern buildings of the Million Homes Programme were a fitting expression. Sweden had been transformed from a country with a housing shortage to a country with a housing surplus. Today, again facing considerable housing shortage in many growing cities, developing this large housing stock with care for its qualities and its residents, and learning from the mistakes where new developments are needed, are important tasks.

Reminded of this, with the last reblog.
Some of the Miljonprogram developments do actually sort of make me think of when this Russian guy was looking around the former East Berlin a few years ago:
youtube
Only instead of Germans maintaining them the whole time, it was Swedes doing the building and maintenance. To pretty high standards, AFAICT.
(I was wrong, btw. The building we're in apparently opened in 1969. And one old lady neighbor in the same stairwell has been here basically ever since.)
A special circle of hell for people who need to navigate by landmarks: one classic "Million Project" development! 🥴
Granted, I haven't been able to get out and about nearly as much as I would like to, since we moved in over 6 months ago now. But yeah, it is STILL "do I turn by this playground area/little seating area/bland landscaping feature, or one of the other umpty identical-looking ones?" (*craning my neck to try and make out the awkwardly placed numbers on the building with my current one fully functioning eye*)
Got turned around in exactly the wrong direction and overshot, coming back from a little ramble yet again. 🙄 But, at least it was a straight shot back to where I did need to turn.
