With this money, I can get away from you [...] From you and your chickens and your pies and your kitchens and everything that smells of grease. I can get away from this shack with its cheap furniture. And this town and its dollar days, and its women that wear uniforms and its men that wear overalls [...] With this money, I can get away from every rotten stinking thing that makes me think of this place or you!

It's Feral Friday!
If Special Collections were compared to a National Park- a thoughtfully curated, accessible experience of the wilderness of the natural world- where would its edges lie? What would be considered off the beaten path, how would its boundaries be defined, and in what ways would the landscape beyond those boundaries inspire our imagination and broaden our conceptions of the world and our communicative capacities?
That’s the realm of pluralistic inquiry explored by Feral Fridays, a new weekly post where we’ll feature items from our collection like zines, experimental book arts, independently produced poetry and other unruly materials that exist at the margins of publishing and literary traditions.
Let’s get Feral!

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Gold Redux
Mildred Pierce / Kate Winslet as Mildred Pierce
Mildred wears this gown and scarf to an evening concert where her daughter is performing. The color onscreen is muted, partly due to the lighting, but behind-the-scenes and publicity photos show it as a rich gold scattered with silver floral-ish designs. (The silver bits are hard to make out, but they sort of suggest horizontal tulip shapes.) I've included a close-up of the very pretty dress clips, which are mostly hidden by the scarf.
I somehow had never heard about this series until now, but it has some great costumes! The designer is Ann Roth.

This gown, likely designed by Milo Anderson, was first worn by Dinah Shore as herself in the 1943 film Thank Your Lucky Stars. It was worn again by Ann Blyth as Veda Pierce in the 1945 Mildred Pierce. The original skirt appears to have been removed and replaced.
