CRAWFORD: BEARS MAKE PACK HIBERNATE IN OT
Hershey Bears 4, Hartford Wolf Pack 3 (OT) BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Hershey, PA, December 1, 2019 – Steven Fogarty’s second goal of the game forced overtime with 2:03 left in the third period, but Brett Leason scored at 2:21 of OT to give the Hershey Bears a 4-3 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at Giant Center. A pass from Christian Djoos sent Leason down the left side in the Wolf Pack zone, and Hartford goaltender Adam Huska (25 saves) stopped Leason’s initial shot. Huska could not control the rebound, though, and Leason flicked it into the net on his forehand, for his third point of the contest. Fogarty’s team-leading seventh tally of the season earned the Wolf Pack a standings point for the 18th time in 22 games on the season (11-4-2-5). With the teams skating 4-on-4, Vinni Lettieri backhanded the puck on goal from in the slot, and Hershey netminder Pheonix Copley (26 saves) made a stick stop. Fogarty jumped on the rebound, however, and flipped the puck through Copley’s legs from the left side of the goal-mouth. Hershey opened the scoring at 8:11 of the first period, on a rebound goal by defenseman Christian Djoos. Mike Sgarbossa passed the puck from the left-wing side to Joe Snively in the middle. His shot was stopped by Huska, but the puck caromed back out into the slot, and Djoos fired it in. After a 40-minute delay for the cleanup of Hershey’s “Teddy Bear Toss”, Fogarty equalized for the Wolf Pack at 11:35, on Hartford’s first power play of the game. With Kody Clark off for slashing, Fogarty took a drop pass from Joey Keane at his own blue line and clicked on a strong solo rush. After slicing through the Bear defense, he finished with a low shot through the pads of Copley. The Wolf Pack power play cashed in for a second time in two chances 7:37 into the second period, giving Hartford its first lead of the game. After Tyler Lewington was called for interference at 6:11, Nick Ebert played the puck from the left point across to Phil DiGiuseppe high in the right circle. He dropped it off to Vincent LoVerde high in the slot, and his one-timer beat Copley to the stick side. Hershey’s Shane Gersich brought the Bears back into a tie at 15:16, with a shot from the bottom of the left circle. Leason put the puck on net from the right boards, and Liam O’Brien jammed the rebound away from Huska, who could not scramble to his right quickly enough to stop Gersich’s bid. Hershey then jumped in front again at 5:08 of the third period, with Beck Malenstyn scoring in his first game back from a recall stint with the Washington Capitals. A shot from the left point by Ed Wittchow hit traffic in front of the goal, and, after Leason poked it on the net from the right side, it went off of Huska’s stick to Malenstyn in the slot. He banged the puck in from close range. The Wolf Pack finish a stretch of five straight road games this Friday night, December 6, traveling to Springfield for a 7:05 PM game vs. the Thunderbirds. All of the action can be heard live on-line at hartfordwolfpack.com, and video streaming is available at theahl.com/AHLTV. CANTLON: WOLF PACK GROWING STRONGER IN TIGHT 2-1 WIN OVER HERSHEY
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Steven Fogarty had a goal and an assist and provided strong team play allowing the Hartford Wolf Pack to collect their ninth win of the season while maintaining their status as the AHL’s best team as they took the first of a weekend's three-games-in-three days with a 2-1 win over visiting Hershey Bears. The Wolf Pack (9-1-0-3) play on Saturday night at 7:30 pm on the backend of a hockey doubleheader with UCONN. Hershey (6-5-1-1-) heads to Allentown, PA to play the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The Wolf Pack caught some early puck luck to start the third period. A broken play allowed Fogarty to snatch a Hershey clearing attempt off the glass, and then while off-balance got a shot toward the net. Darren Raddysh cut through the right-wing circle and was able to get enough of a piece of the puck to get the red light turned on with what proved to be the game-winner at the 22-second mark. "Any time you get the puck to the net, you’ll get rebounds or a deflection or something. I just threw it at the net and was fortunate Raddysh was able to get a piece of it,” Fogarty, with six points in his last five games, said. Raddysh, who was coached by current Pack head coach, Kris Knoblauch, while playing in juniors, felt his play tonight was not something he hadnt seen before. “He does so many things. He did a great job managing the puck and getting it up to our forwards tonight.” The Pack did so many of the small things needed to win this game. Rookie Nick Jones won two late faceoffs from veteran center Mike Sgarbossa. Boo Nieves blocked a late-in-the-game shot while Raddysh played a strong two-way game. “We’ve been rewarding him (Jones) with the play. He has earned it. We've been having him take the right side draws, and it worked well, and those were big draws. We rely on him on the penalty kill and late in the game,” Knoblauch said of his rookie centerman out of the University of North Dakota. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin continued to show his net mastery and calm demeanor in key situations. He stopped Hershey’s Alex Jonsson-Fjallby twice in the last five minutes with two strong left-wing chances. “Shesterkin reads the play well and anticipates what the other team is going to do so well. He’s got a lot of hockey smarts,” Knoblauch said with a smile. Hershey broke the scoreless contest in the second period just after the Wolf Pack's third powerplay ended. The Bears rearguard, Christian Djoos, was at the left point and saw an open lane as Ville Meskanen peeled off to go cover the right point. Djoos was able to launch his shot with the red-hot, Sgarbossa in front. Sgarbossa was credited with the tip-in for his sixth goal of the season with a strong position on defenseman Vincent LoVerde at 7:27. Hershey effectively kept the Wolf Pack to the boards for a majority of the second period. After three early shots on net, the next six were spread out until the last minute of the period when the Wolf Pack tied the game. Nieves won a critical offensive zone draw from Sgarbossa. The puck came back to defenseman Joey Keane at the right point, who waited patiently for the play to develop. Keane scooted around the Liam O’Brien and zipped a cross-ice pass to Fogarty who was wide-open. Fogarty deposited his third of the season over a fallen Bears goalie, Vitek Vanecek. “He showed so much composure (Keane) to make that play. He had a chance to shoot it, but we didn’t have anybody up-front at the net (yet) and it wouldn’t have been a quality scoring chance. He faked the shot, moved to the right, and he slipped it back door to Fogarty. It was just a heck of a play,” Knoblauch stated. The Pack's best scoring chance didn’t count as a shot when LoVerde rang one off the pipe at 6:53. It was a chessboard hockey game over the first 10-minutes of the game with Hershey having the lead in shots, 2-1. The teams finally got some space to operate with which got the crowd into the game. The first quality chance came with Ty Ronning taking a perfect lead pass from Keane before going backhand-to-forehand but Vanacek denied him at 10:39. Hershey defenseman, Martin Fehervarty, turned the puck over deep in the Bears zone while on the powerplay. With Jones heavily forechecking, he took the puck away and looked first for Tim Gettinger who was coming in backdoor off the right-wing side. Instead, Jones caught the trailer LoVerde, but he was stopped. 65 seconds later at 15:25, Gabriel Fontaine was flying off the left-wing and eluded the check of Bears defenseman, Connor Hobbs. Fontaine spotted Vinni Lettieri who was open at the right side of the net and he missed the open left side slipping it past the post. In the waning seconds of the first period on the Wolf Pack’s second powerplay, Phil DiGiuseppe was on the right-wing and sent a cross-ice pass dead center to Patrick Newell, who made an open-blade redirect that Vanecek stopped with his right pad with about 13 seconds to go. The Pack held the shot advantage at 9-6 heading into the first intermission. NOTES: The Wolf Pack powerplay remains dead last in the AHL at 8% and has not scored a PPG since Keane's tally on October 26th in Bridgeport. The current streak now sits at 0-21 over a six-game span. LINES: Nieves-Fogarty-DiGiuseppe O’Regan-Lettieri-Fontaine Gettinger-Jones-Newell Ronning-Meskanen-Zerter-Gossage LoVerde-Raddysh Day-Ebert Geersten-Keane SCRATCHES: Matt Beleskey (upper body) Jeff Taylor Ryan Dmowski. COLLINS: PACK CONTINUE TO ROLL WITH 2-1 WIN OVER BEARS
By Micah Collins, Hartford Wolf Pack Hartford, CT, November 8, 2019 – The Hartford Wolf Pack were able to come out on top again in a close-scoring affair Friday night against the Hershey Bears at the XL Center, as captain Steven Fogarty and goaltender Igor Shesterkin (22 saves) led the way. It was a relatively uneventful first period, as nobody was able to find the back of the net. Shesterkin stopped all nine shots he faced with ease, as did Vitek Vanecek (25 saves) for Hershey. “Shesterkin reads the play and anticipates what the other team is going to do so well, he’s got a lot of hockey smarts,” Wolf Pack head coach Kris Knoblauch said of his goaltender’s play. “That’s why he hasn’t had much of an adjustment period coming over to North America.” The Bears would put up the first goal of the night at 12:38 of the middle frame when Mike Sgarbossa found the back of the net for the sixth time this year. Christian Djoos and Matt Moulson had the assists. “Hershey is a good team, they didn’t give us a lot,” Fogarty said. “We didn’t get frustrated, though, we stuck to our game plan and it worked out.” Just when it seemed the lead would hold through the end of the period, Fogarty knocked in his third of the year from in close, off a pass from Joey Keane. Boo Nieves also had an assist. “Keane made a great play on that goal,” said Knoblauch, “having the wherewithal not to shoot that puck, as you’d usually see by a defenseman do there, but to pass it to Fogarty.” Hartford picked up right where they left off in the third period when Darren Raddysh redirected a shot from Fogarty just 22 seconds into the final frame to give the Wolf Pack the lead. The marker was Raddysh’s second of the season and Fogarty’s second point of the night. “Any time you can get the puck to the net, you get a rebound or a deflection or something,” said Fogarty. “I just threw it at the net, and it was fortunate that Raddysh was able to get a piece of it.” The goal would prove to be the final one of the night, giving the Pack the 2-1 victory, in spite of Hershey’s late efforts, pulling Vanecek for the extra attacker. The Wolf Pack are right back at the XL Center Saturday night, hosting the Belleville Senators at 7:30 PM. That game features the Wolf Pack’s annual “Teddy Bear Toss”. Fans are invited to bring soft toys to the game and fling them on to the ice when the Wolf Pack scored their first goal. CRAWFORD: LETTIERI HAT TRICK NOT ENOUGH AS PACK MELT AGAINST HERSHEY, LOSE 5-3
BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Hartford, CT, March 10, 2019 – Vinni Lettieri had his first pro hat trick for the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at the XL Center, but Devante Smith-Pelly also scored three times for the Hershey Bears, who prevailed over the Wolf Pack by a score of 5-3. The Wolf Pack, who had won three straight coming into the game, had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Hershey scored three times in the third period and outshot Hartford 17-8 in the third. "It was tough we didn't get that win today," Lettieri said. "I think whether you're up or down, playing the full 60 (minutes) is the most important thing." John Gilmour had three assists for the Wolf Pack, as had Hershey’s Nathan Walker. Former Wolf Pack Jayson Megna had a goal and an assist for the Bears. Adam Huska, fresh off of the end of a three-year career at UConn, made his pro debut in the Wolf Pack net, making 25 saves. "I liked Adam's game,” Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge said of Huska. “I thought he played well. He's a big goalie and he moves well. There's lots of positive things there." The Wolf Pack controlled much of the first period, outshooting Hershey 15-7, but came out of the frame tied at one. Hartford opened the scoring on the game’s first power play at 12:59, with Mike Sgarbossa off for high-sticking. Lettieri started his big day with a low snap shot from the top of the right circle. Gabriel Fontaine screened Hershey netminder Vitek Vanecek (25 saves), and the puck got by Vanecek on the stick side. "Vinni's an offensive player that we can lean on for those offensive opportunities,” McCambridge said. “He's been a real big contributor for us." The Bears equalized with 2:31 left in the period, on the first goal in six AHL games on the year for Smith-Pelly, the long-time NHL winger. Hershey won a defensive zone draw and Tyler Lewington passed the puck from the right point to Aaron Ness on the left point, and his shot was deflected by Smith-Pelly off of the right shoulder of Huska and into the net. Lettieri struck for his second of the game, and 20th of the season, only 30 seconds in the second period, to put the Wolf Pack up 2-1. After a Ryan Gropp pass attempt was broken up, Gilmour put the puck on net from the left-wing boards, and the rebound went off Vanecek’s pads to Lettieri at the right side of the goal mouth, and he easily buried it. "Our line’s been doing great,” said Lettieri. “When I get the puck I always try to get it to Gropp or (Steven) Fogarty and then try and get ahead of the play, and they always seem to find me." Hershey tied the score again, though, at 5:53, on their first power play of the contest. With only eight seconds left on a cross-checking penalty to Gropp, Garrett Pilon fired home a one-timer, off of a pass from the right-wing corner by Juuso Ikonen. The Bears then took the lead only 1:54 into the third frame, on Smith-Pelly’s second of the game. The Wolf Pack turned the puck over in the neutral zone, allowing Hershey to break 3-on-1. Megna passed across the slot from the left side to Smith-Pelly, and he shot back against the grain, putting the puck past Huska to his right. Hershey’s second power-play goal of the game made it a 4-2 Bear lead at 8:53. With Ryan Lindgren off for cross-checking, a cross-ice feed by Riley Barber found Sgarbossa on the left wing, and he let go a shot that Megna tipped past Huska. The Bears gave the Wolf Pack a chance to get back in the game with penalties 44 seconds apart, to Megna for tripping at 14:39 and Liam O’Brien for a hook at 15:23. Six seconds after Megna got out of the box, Lettieri completed his hat trick with his 21st of the season at 16:45. Gilmour set up Fogarty in the left circle, he fed across to Lettieri below the right faceoff dot, and Lettieri’s quick shot found its way in behind Vanecek. Not to be outdone, Smith-Pelly would get his hat trick goal only 44 seconds later, at 17:29, to restore the two-goal margin. A Smith-Pelly pass sent Walker in on a partial breakaway, and Huska stopped his bid, but Smith-Pelly jumped on the rebound and knocked it in. The next action for the Wolf Pack is a home game this Wednesday night, March 13 vs. the Binghamton Devils. Faceoff is 7:00 PM, and that is another chance to take advantage of the Wolf Pack’s “Click It or Ticket Family Value Pack”, which includes two tickets, two hot dogs and two sodas, all for just $40. CANTLON: BEARS CLIP WOLF PACK 4-1
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - A strong three-goal second period allowed the Hershey Bears to seize control of the game and skate away with a 4-1 win Saturday night at the XL Center. The two-game battle between these two division rivals left the Bears in a much stronger position now seven points ahead of the third-place Wolf Pack. Providence with a win over Springfield 4-2 are now five ahead of them and Charlotte got a point in a 3-2 overtime loss to Utica narrowing the lead between them to four points. “We played according to plan in the first we played really well. (We) almost had a goal on the powerplay, and had some other good opportunities. J-F came up with some huge saves in the first, its what we expected. Then in the second period, we let that first goal affect us and took a lot of momentum away from us,” said head coach Kris Knoblauch. The Pack concludes the weekend play in Springfield tomorrow afternoon at 3 PM. The Bears scored the game’s first goal in the first minute of the second period took control of the game. Brian Pinho at the right point let one go Berube made the save, but he could not control the rebound and cover it the Bears Matt Moulson with his long stick got one crack at it and the second sent the puck into the net for his 21st goal of the regular season at 52 seconds. “Last night we played well and we started out pretty well, but once they got the first one we just kinda combusted. We just kinda gave up,” said an annoyed captain Steven Fogarty “just playing hard and doing the right things and the only we can control is our attitude and effort and they just weren’t there we could see it and feel it on the bench.” The Bears in short order took a 2-0 lead scoring 11 seconds into a powerplay just their second of the game. Daniel Sprong at the right point took a Bobby Nardella pass and quickly fired a good hard low shot that Philippe Maillet free from his check and the Quebec native with a perfect tip scored on his mon-ami monsieur Berube depositing his 16th of the season far side. “We gave up just one goal and changed our entire game the way we played our structure the things that have helped us gain success so far this year. It’s a mindset thing you can’t change things the effort wasn’t there. We had a little push there in the third, but obviously not enough.” The Wolf Pack playing way too passive in a five on five situation, playing like a PK. Matt Beleskey sought to change the direction got into a scrap unfortunately it was Hershey who kept the momentum. “That’s the type of guy Beleskey is he saw what was going on the bench tried to get us going and it worked, but we went ahead and combusted like that (again),” said Fogarty. Once again Bobby Nardella got the scoring sequence started receiving the pass from Eric Burgdorfer a the right point getting the puck to Brian Pinho as he came off the right-wing half wall. Then just before he was going to get nailed by Mason Geersten he snapped a 35 footer top shelf over Berube’s left shoulder to make it 3-0 silencing a hearty crowd of 4,814. “They're a good team there gonna get their chances, but we allowed too many,” said Knoblauch. His captain put it more straight forward. “They going to have their puck possession and get their chances, We have to play down in their end, and we did not do enough of that.” That was all for Berube facing 18 shots and in came Adam Huska. “I did that because we needed to try to change things at that point,” said Knoblauch. The current offense output is not enough to get back into first place. “One goal in five (periods) just isn’t enough in this league there a good team, but so are we. Were not just not getting enough second chances, not getting guys to the net. We weren’t generating enough off the rush and we have proven all year long we can score goals. We gotta get back to playing the right way defensively and we can get guys going to the net better.” All too often Hershey had the puck the Wolf Pack didn’t. The Bears were able to secure the puck and make rushes up ice and gain easy entry into the Pack end of the ice. As one fan acidly texted me during the game “why don’t (they) let them stroll into the offensive zone !! Well put and wells aid. The Bears continued the quality chances as Bobby Nardella, Mike Sgarbossa and Shane Gemish had point-blank shots. In the third period, that Wolf Pack broke Vitek Vanecek's bid for a second straight shutout at 12:03. After botching a three on one break, Nick Jones with his shot missing the net, the puck remained in the Hershey zone. Patrick Newell got the puck from Greg Chase and in the right-wing faceoff circle sent a smooth backhand pass to Jones who one-timed his ninth past the Bears netminder at 12:03. It was Chase’s first ever Wolf Pack point. Hershey’s Tyler Lewington’s empty netter with a second to go closed out scoring for the night. The first period was much like last night’s tight-checking and opportunities that came via turnovers. Hershey got an early break at 1:22 off a turnover and Daniel Sprong who has played very well since being acquired from San Diego last week was stoned by Berube. The loss of Tim Gettinger and Boo Nieves forced some interesting line combos as Ryan Dmowski was with Steven Fogarty and Vinni Lettieri to start the game. Dmowski had the first shot and the first hit of the game. Beck Malenstyn had another chance for Hershey and Sean McBride on the left-wing answered back with one at 7:04. At 12:58 another gift turnover went to Hershey’s Shane Gersich and he went in all alone, but Berube made a gorgeous butterfly glove save to keep the game scoreless. The Wolf Pack powerplay continues its struggles doing well on the first half of the first chance, but didn’t sustain the same puck movement in the second half of it. As part of the Wolf Pack’s Military Appreciation weekend, the Wolf Pack wore their camouflage-style jerseys for the game. In the first intermission, a new class for the Army, Marines and Coast Guard took oaths to begin their training. Congrats to all! LINES: Fogarty-Lettieri-Dmowski O’Regan-Newell-Kravtsov Beleskey-Jones-Gropp McBride-Ronning-Chase LoVerde-Hajek Ebert-Geersten Raddysh-Crawley SCRATCHES: Tim Gettinger - Upper-Body - Day-To-Day Boo Nieves - Upper-Body - Day-To-Day Yegor Rykov - Healthy Gabriel Fontaine - Shoulder Surgery - Season-Ending NOTES: Nieves was a last-minute scratch forcing Knoblauch to do some serious line juggling and when Beleskey was tossed early in the third for his second fight of the game they were down a forward for the rest of the third period. Gettinger looks doubtful for tomorrow and might not be available till next weekend. UCONN hockey will travel to Orono, Maine to play the Hockey East quarterfinals next weekend as the fifth seed to play the number four Black Bears. Providence’s Dan Vladar finally surpassed Igor Shesterkin in best GAA at 1.83 and Igor still has second-best save percentage at .934 The Wolf Pack record since his recall January 7th is 10-10-5 (W-L-OTL). Among the best plus-minus in the AHL two ex-Pack players ay the fourth and fifth spots Hubert Labrie (Belleville) plus 25 and Cole Schneider (Milwaukee) plus 23. CRAWFORD: (SAT) PACK HIBERNATES WHILE BEARS DOUBLE THEM UP
BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Hershey, PA, December 8, 2018 – Mike Sgarbossa and Liam O’Brien scored two goals apiece Saturday night at Giant Center, to lead the Hershey Bears to a 6-3 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack. Bobby Butler and Vinni Lettieri had a goal and an assist each for the Wolf Pack, and Vince Pedrie had two assists. Colby Williams added three assists for Hershey. “We weren’t able to get pucks stopped in the zone, spent too much time defending and were not able to sustain a forecheck,” Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge said. “We had waves of it, but Hershey, for the most part, put us on our heels.” The Wolf Pack opened the scoring three minutes into the game, on a power-play goal by Butler. With O’Brien in the penalty box for tripping, Lettieri moved the puck across the Bear line and handed to Tim Gettinger on the left-wing boards. He fed across to Butler, who fired home a shot from the right side of the slot. Hershey equalized at 13:20. The Wolf Pack won a defensive-zone draw, but couldn’t clear the puck, and a shot from the left point by Williams was tipped by Nathan Walker, and it hit the inside of the goal post to the left of Hartford goaltender Alexandar Georgiev (31 saves). Sgarbossa got to the carom in the goalmouth and pushed it into the net. The Bears jumped in front for the first time 3:27 into the second period, on the first North American pro goal for Maximilian Kammerer. After Hartford’s Peter Holland was dragged down near the blue line trying to move the puck out of the zone, Mason Mitchell passed to Williams, and he worked a give-and-go with Kammerer, who finished the play from the right side. The Wolf Pack man-advantage clicked again to tie the score at 10:31, with Walker in the penalty box for hooking. Butler got the puck off the right-wing boards to Pedrie at the point, and he set Lettieri up at the top of the left circle for a one-timer. That shot beat Hershey netminder Ilya Samsonov (28 saves) to the glove side. The Hershey power play responded, though, on its first opportunity of the game, at 17:11. Connor Hobbs prevented Shawn O’Donnell’s clearing attempt at the right point and handed across to the opposite point to Williams. He quickly whipped a pass to the front of the net, and O’Brien, headed to the middle from the right side, deflected the puck past Georgiev. The Bears then broke the game open with three goals in the third, starting with O’Brien’s second of the game at 6:30. O’Brien carried into the Wolf Pack zone on the left wing and got to the middle with an outside-inside move, before losing the puck. He got back to it on the right side, though, got his stick loose and put a backhanded swipe into the net. Garrett Pilon made it 5-2 for Hershey in a 4-on-4 at 10:13, with his first pro goal. He worked his way free along the goal line on the left wing and stickhandled toward the front, before flicking a shot by Georgiev on the glove side. Sgarbossa then got his second of the game on a power-play deflection at 11:38, after a slashing call against Georgiev 12 seconds earlier. Former Wolf Pack Jayson Megna played the puck from near the left-wing corner out to Aaron Ness high in the slot, and Sgarbossa tipped Ness’ snapshot into the net. The Wolf Pack cut the margin to 6-3 with 4:33 left, with Alex Kile scoring his first Wolf Pack goal. Pedrie centered the puck from the right-wing corner, and it went off of O’Donnell at the side of the goal and deflected to the front. Kile, playing his second game up from Maine of the ECHL, drove the middle and knocked the loose puck in. The Wolf Pack’s next game is this Thursday night, December 13, the first of two games against the Charlotte Checkers at Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte. Faceoff is 7:00 PM and all of the action can be heard live on News Radio 1410 WPOP, and online at newsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio. Video streaming is available at theahl.com/AHLTV.
