CANTLON" (SAT) BELLEVILLE WINS IN SHOOTOUT OVER HARTFORD...AGAIN
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The Belleville Senators overcame a two-goal deficit and scored twice in the shootout to come away with a 4-3 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday as part of an XL Center hockey doubleheader. Drake Batherson and Jordan Szwarz were the sole scorers in the shootout as the Pack, once again, failed to register even one goal after the overtime period, where they were out-shot 3-1. Both teams looked tired in the extra frame having expended so much energy in the third period. Belleville capitalized on a late power play. Morgan Klimchuk, who had strong night for the Senators, was able to dish the puck to Vitali Abramov in the slot off a sharp angle. Abramov just wheeled and fired on Pack netminder, Adam Huska, beating him along the ice far side to tie the game at three at 17:22 The Wolf Pack power play was perfect on the evening, but made their first major mistake of the season while with the man-advantage and it cost them dearly on their third opportunity. A breakdown allowed Belleville to cash in on a two-on-one breakout while shorthanded. Joey Keane was the player back on the two-on-one. He let Huska take on the shooter, Jordan Szwarz. Team captain, Steven Fogarty, raced back in an effort to even things up for the home team, but Szwarz launched a perfect shot that went over Huska's glove hand at 4:23. The goal cut the Pack lead to 3-2. “We make a really poor decision (with the puck)," remarked head coach Kris Knoblauch. "We're on the power play with a two-goal lead, and we didn’t deserve to be in the lead, but for our power play tonight.” The Wolf Pack power play, one of the few weak links in the early part of this season, struck for the second time early in the second period and just 12 seconds into the man-advantage. Fogarty won the face- for the Pack getting it over to Joey Keane. He spotted Vinni Lettieri in his favorite spot on the ice and he hit a one-timer that rocketed past goaltender, Marcus Hogberg. The goal was Lettieri's fourth of the season. “We’ve been working on it day-in and day-out. The coaches are working tirelessly with us on it. We haven’t been so successful lately, and hopefully we started a new trend tonight" Lettieri stated. Keane later extended his point scoring streak to four games while Fogarty’s secondary assist upped his point scoring streak to three games, all of which have been multiple point games. Just after Ty Ronning was stopped on a quality scoring chance, the Pack made it a two-goal lead at 16:49. Ville Meskanen fed Sean Day who whistled one off the post. The puck laid in the crease with rookie Lewis Zerter-Gossage there battling and was able to whack it into the net for his first goal of the season. The Senators put a strong push on before the end of the period, but Huska shut the door on Szwarz with 18 seconds to go. The Senators was no time testing Huska early with a breakaway attempt at 1:30. Klimchuk went to the backhand after coming off the left wing, but Huska was there to end the threat. The Pack finally broke through on the power play after rising a streak of 0-21 over a span of six games. It was also the game’s first goal on a Teddy Bear Toss promotion for Toys For Tots. The Pack got a shot from the left wing side by Danny O’Regan with Tim Gettinger in front. Gettinger then outworked two Belleville players and his stick found the loose puck, and put it in the net for his third of the season at 6:32. Fogarty kept his point scoring streak alive with the secondary assist to keep his point scoring streak going. Belleville, like the Wolf Pack, are a refurbished team with quick strike offensive capability. Jack Dougherty sent a perfect head-man pass to Vitali Abramov setting up a breakaway off the left wing side. His shot was stopped but the loose puck was put in by Josh Norris, who paid the price when he was drilled into the net at same moment by Mason Geertsen at 11:45. LINES: Nieves-Fogarty-DiGiuseppe O’Regan-Lettieri-Fontaine Gettinger-Jones-Newell Ronning-Meskanen-Zerter-Gossage LoVerde-Raddysh Day-Ebert Geersten-Keane Huska Shesterkin SCRATCHES: Matt Beleskey (upper body) Jeff Taylor Ryan Dmowski NOTES: The Wolf Pack lost Gabriel Fontaine to an injury in the second period. He will be out at least a week, more likely two, with what is described as an, "upper body injury." It looked like an arm or shoulder issue. Ryan Dmowski will take his place in the lineup tomorrow in Providence. Igor Shesterkin will start in goal tomorrow in Providence at 3 pm against the Bruins Prior to the game, Shesterkin was presented an etched glass award by the AHL's VP of Communications, Jason Chaimovitch, after having been named the "CCM/AHL Goalie of the Month for October." CRAWFORD: SENATORS OVERCOME WOLF PACK IN SHOOTOUT
Tumblr media
Belleville Senators 5, Hartford Wolf Pack 4 (SO) BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Belleville, Ontario, November 2, 2019 – The Hartford Wolf Pack finished a three-game Canadian road trip with a 5-4 shootout loss to the Belleville Senators Saturday night at CAA Arena. The Wolf Pack finished the trip 0-1-0-2, but gained at least a standings point Saturday for the 11th time in 12 games on the season (8-1-0-3). Joey Keane’s team-leading sixth goal of the season tied the game for the Wolf Pack with 54.5 seconds left in regulation time and goaltender Igor Shesterkin on the bench for an extra attacker. Nick Ebert and Steven Fogarty had a goal and an assist each for Hartford, and Patrick Newell scored his first pro goal.  Jordan Szwarz had a goal and an assist for Belleville, and scored the only goal of the shootout, and Cole Cassels added a goal and an assist. “That was big, at the end, to score that goal, something we definitely need, a key goal,” Wolf Pack head coach Kris Knoblauch said.  “Hopefully that goal can give us some confidence moving forward.” The Wolf Pack jumped ahead twice in the first period, but the Senators replied both times. Fogarty opened the scoring 2:28 into the game, going to the front of the net and deflecting a pass from the right-wing boards by Ebert past Belleville goaltender Filip Gustavsson (33 saves). Michael Carcone tied the game at one exactly eight minutes later, at 10:28.  After Shesterkin (32 saves) made a sharp stop on one Senator chance, Carcone was able to poke the rebound inside the goalpost to Shesterkin’s left. Ebert, a former Senator, got the lead right back for the Wolf Pack at 12:10, just 1:43 after Carcone’s goal.  Ville Meskanen worked the puck to Ebert high in the slot, and he snapped a shot past Gustavsson on the glove side. The Senators equalized again, though, with 1:08 remining in the frame.  Szwarz rushed up the left side, battling Darren Raddysh to get to the middle.  Shesterkin stopped Szwarz’s close-in shot, but Jonathan Davidsson, trailing the play, jumped on the rebound and banged it in. Belleville then took its first lead of the game at 5:45 of the second period, on a shorthanded goal by Szwarz.  He poked the puck away from Keane in center ice and then fended Keane off as Szwarz bore towards the Wolf Pack net, ultimately flicking a shot just inside the post on Shesterkin’s glove side. Then it was the Wolf Pack’s turn to come back, and they leveled the score at three at 8:41, just three seconds after an interference minor to Jack Daugherty expired.  Newell finished the play, dunking in a Phil DiGiuseppe pass from the left side of the goal mouth. The Senators went ahead again at 6:59 of the third on a goal by Cassels, who was playing his first AHL game of the season after joining Belleville from Utah of the ECHL.  An Ebert pass attempt from below his own goal line got through DiGiuseppe, and Cassels found the loose puck and wired it past Shesterkin from the slot. The Wolf Pack’s comeback hopes took a hit when Boo Nieves was assessed a double-minor for high-sticking with only 2:08 left in the third, but during that power play, Belleville’s Drake Batherson was called for high-sticking at 18:35.  That made it a 4-on-4, and the Wolf Pack pulled Shesterkin for a 5-on-4 skater advantage. After the Wolf Pack won an offensive-zone draw, Fogarty sent the puck cross-ice to Vinni Lettieri at the right-wing faceoff dot, and he dropped it back to Keane high in the slot.  He sent a long shot that was deflected in front of the goal and eluded Gustavsson for the tie. “That’s absolutely a talent, getting shots on net, not getting blocked,” Knoblauch said of the rookie defenseman Keane’s early goal-scoring success.  “He’s found ways, and you could say, yeah, there’s some luck, but there’s a lot of skill to that too.” Belleville had a power play in overtime, on the carry-over time of Nieves’ penalty from the third, and then the Wolf Pack got a man advantage when Alex Formenton was called for tripping with two minutes left, but neither man-advantage unit could click. Szwarz scored on Belleville’s first shootout attempt, and that stood up as the difference.  Shesterkin stopped the next two Senator shooters, Josh Norris and Batherson, but Fogarty, Lettieri, and Meskanen, were all denied by Gustavsson. The Wolf Pack are back on home ice at the XL Center for their next action, this Friday, November 8, a 7:15 PM game vs. the Hershey Bears.  Once again this season, all Friday-night Wolf Pack home games feature $1 hot dogs and $2 beers through the start of the second period, presented by Nomads Adventure Quest. CRAWFORD: P-BRUINS POUND PACK 5-2 IN MONDAY MAKEUP GAME
Tumblr media
BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Providence, RI, January 21, 2019 – Paul Carey scored a hat trick Monday at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center Providence, to lead the Providence Bruins to a 5-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack in a holiday matinee. John Gilmour had a goal and an assist for the Wolf Pack, who fell behind 2-0 in the first period and trailed 3-0 before coming back to within one goal.  Karson Kuhlman had a goal and an assist for Providence, and Connor Clifton added an empty-net goal and an assist. “Obviously, to be down 2-0 on the road, in a tough building to win in, is not an easy task to overcome,” Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge said.  “We were able to get back, with two quick goals, make it a close game, but then going into the third period, the first six minutes, we’re (penalty) killing for four of them.  That doesn’t give you a chance to at least tie that game up.  Overall, I thought that Providence, the chances that they created, they buried, and the ones that we did, we weren’t able to finish on.” The Bruins’ two first-period scores came within a span of 30 seconds. Carey, a former New York Ranger, opened the scoring at 8:56.  After the puck slid through the feet of Wolf Pack defenseman Libor Hajek, Carey grabbed it at the left side of the slot a snapped in through the pads of Wolf Pack goaltender Dustin Tokarski (23 saves). Then, at 9:26, Kuhlman made it a 2-0 Providence advantage.  Gilmour started to carry the puck up the middle in the defensive zone but had it get away from him.  Jordan Szwarz took control for Providence and set Kuhlman up with an open net for the finish. The Bruins upped their lead to 3-0 at 5:33 of the second period, on Carey’s second of the game.  Clifton moved down the right-wing boards in the Hartford end and slipped past a hip check attempt by Ryan Lindgren.  He then fed the puck across the middle to Carey, who slammed it in. The Wolf Pack would respond quickly to that goal, though, with a pair of their own in just over two minutes. At 6:20, only 1:47 after Carey’s goal, Gilmour got the Wolf Pack on the board with his 12th of the season.  Connor Brickley banked the puck off of the right-wing boards in the Bruin zone and got back to it.  He sent a backhand shot on goal that Providence goaltender Zane McIntyre (23 saves) stopped, but Gilmour, attacking the net from the left side, fired the rebound in. Then, just 2:12 later at 8:32, Vinni Lettieri brought Hartford to within one.  Gilmour again had a big role in the play, as he carried the puck behind the net to the right side, before feeding it out to Lettieri at the top of the circles.  He released a lightning-quick one-timer that cleanly beat McIntyre. That was the extent of the Wolf Pack’s offense, though, and, after Hartford was forced to kill two penalties in the first five minutes of the third, Carey completed the hat trick at 11:22. Trent Frederic was able to work the puck away from Gilmour on the right side in the Wolf Pack end, and it came to Carey at the side of the slot.  Tokarski got a piece of Carey’s shot, but could not keep it out of the net. Clifton then iced the game with an open-net goal with 1:40 left after Szwarz broke up a Hartford pass just inside the Providence line. The Wolf Pack’s next action is a home game this Wednesday night, January 23, with the Springfield Thunderbirds returning to the XL Center for a 7:00 PM contest.  That is another chance to take advantage of the Wolf Pack’s “Click It or Ticket Family Value Pack”, which includes two tickets, two hot dogs and two sodas, all for just $40. Tickets for all 2018-19 Wolf Pack home games are on sale now at the Agera Energy Ticket Office at the XL Center, online at hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499.  Tickets purchased in advance for kids 12 or younger start at just $13 each, and all tickets will have a $3 day-of-game increase. CRAWFORD: WOLF PACK WINNING STREAK COMES TO A CLOSE IN PROVIDENCE
Tumblr media
BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Providence, RI, January 6, 2019 – A three-game Hartford Wolf Pack winning streak came to an end Sunday at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center Providence, in a 5-1 loss to the Providence Bruins. A Cole Schneider power-play goal with 2:21 left in the third period prevented a Bruin shutout, but the Wolf Pack were only able to generate 16 shots on Providence goaltender Zane McIntyre. Peter Cehlarik scored twice for the Bruins, and Jordan Szwarz had a goal and an assist.  The Wolf Pack had been 3-0-1 in their previous four games. “Right from the start, Providence was quicker to (the) loose pucks, hemmed us in our own zone, and we weren’t able to generate any kind of offense,” Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge said. The Bruins dominated the first period, outshooting the Wolf Pack 17-4, and built a 2-0 lead. Szwarz opened the scoring at the 13:43 mark, with his team-leading 12th goal of the season.  A shot from the point by Kyle Cumiskey went wide, and Cameron Hughes was able to poke the puck behind the net to Szwarz, who jammed it between Wolf Pack goaltender Marek Mazanec (32 saves) and the goal post to his right. The Bruins then made it a 2-0 game on a power play with only 3.4 seconds left in the period.  With Lias Andersson off for holding, Cumiskey fed a pass across the slot from right to left to Cehlarik, who ripped it into the net. After a scoreless second period, Providence scored a back-breaking shorthanded goal at 9:12 of the third, to increase its lead to 3-0. Chris Breen cleared the puck to center ice, and Hughes broke into the Wolf Pack zone on a 2-on-1 with Karson Kuhlman.  Hughes passed to Kuhlman on the right side, and he dropped it off to Emil Johansson, who snapped home his first goal of the season. Cehlarik then bagged his second of the day at 11:44 to make it 4-0, driving a shot from the left-wing side through a Mark McNeill screen and past Mazanec. The Wolf Pack later attempted to lift Mazanec for an extra attacker, but just as he was reaching the bench the Wolf Pack turned the puck over, and Gemel Smith fired it into the empty cage at 15:35. McIntyre was not able to complete the shutout, however, as the Wolf Pack power play capitalized after a tripping call against Tanner Pond at the 15:38 mark.  Vinni Lettieri sent the puck cross-ice to Peter Holland in the left circle, and Schneider deflected his shot through McIntyre at 17:39. The defeat was the first in regulation in six games against Providence for the Wolf Pack, who are 4-1-1-0 in the season series against their Atlantic Division rivals. GRUNDY: (SAT) PACK DONATE TWO POINTS TO SENATORS CAMPAIGN
Tumblr media
Belleville Senators 4, Hartford Wolf Pack 3 (SO) BY: Bryce Grundy, Hartford Wolf Pack Hartford, CT, November 9, 2019 – The Hartford Wolf Pack dropped a close one to the Belleville Senators at the XL Center Saturday night, losing a 3-1 lead in the third period and falling 4-3 in a shootout. It was the Wolf Pack that struck first on the power play at 6:32 of the first period, ending an 0-for-19 streak on the man advantage. Tim Gettinger got his third goal of the year to give the Pack the early lead, with the help of teammates Danny O’Regan and Steven Fogarty. Belleville would tie it up at 11:44 on a goal by Josh Norris, making the score 1-1 going into the second period. The power play prevailed for the Wolf Pack again at 4:24 of the second, as Vinni Lettieri ripped a vicious one-timer, off of a pass from Joey Keane on the point, giving the Wolf Pack their second lead of the night. “Coach Knoblauch has been working tirelessly with us on the power play,” Lettieri noted. “Hopefully we kick start something, we have two great units.” “Keane has been key for us this year,” commented Wolf Pack head coach Kris Knoblauch. “ Geertsen has been great too. It might’ve been his best game.” Lewis Zerter-Gossage buried a rebound at 16:49, after defenseman Sean Day rang the post, giving the Pack some insurance going into the third period, but it was the Senators who would battle back and take this one in a shootout. “We had an opportunity to put it away,” said Knoblauch.  “Their shorthanded goal was a big turning point in the game.” Belleville’s Jordan Szwarz cut the lead in half with his shorthanded goal at 4:23 of the third period, while Vitaly Abramov forced the game into overtime with 2:38 remaining in regulation, with a power-play goal. Despite the loss, Knoblauch and teammates made note of Wolf Pack forward Steven Fogarty’s leadership. “Fogarty is a great leader and brings the team-first mentality,” mentioned Lettieri. “ will do whatever is best for team. We’ll have him play wing and center, and he’ll do whatever it takes. He’s got a really strong stick and wins puck battles,” said Knoblauch. The Wolf Pack finish a three-game weekend Sunday afternoon, visiting the Providence Bruins for a 3:05 PM game.  All of the action of that battle can be heard on-line at hartfordwolfpack.com.  Video streaming is available at ahllive.com.
