Mike Wheeler didn’t pull this:
And ESPECIALLY this:
To be treated like he’s just gonna be useless and stand to the side while everyone else fights monsters. That boy has NEVER backed down from danger or allowed himself to be pushed off. Even with BILLY he went all in, even though he knew he wasn’t gonna win.
Mike’s not gonna stand to the side, he isn’t baggage and even if he doesn’t have amazing aim or is Nancy, he’s gonna fucking fight with whatever he can even if he knows he’s gonna die. If there was a sword on the ground, do you really think this boy wouldn’t pick it up and at least try?
Mike Wheeler has shown us time and time again that he’ll never go down without a fight, works quick with his environment, and is so brave that he’ll fight monsters or people he has no chance against.
He’s not gonna be pushed to the side and watch everyone else fight. Just cause he’s had a few goofy scenes doesn’t mean he’s a lost puppy ditz or something.
Even scenes with Troy, or throwing the rock, or talking back, or jumping off the bridge. Those are perfect displays that he’s not someone who just lets things beat him without a little push back.
He’s gonna try. Mike Wheeler picking up a weapon and standing tall even if he’s got zero chance is the most in character thing he can do.
That’s what makes him just so…amazing. That selfless display of bravery. We don’t see any other character do what he does. Mike doesn’t cower behind anyone, he doesn’t look fearful, he holds a goddamn candle stick proudly because he’s gonna fight no matter what. I think people saying stuff like ‘you want this Mike to have a sword? Bffr’ don’t pay much attention to the depth of his character and instead focus on very surface level appearances of Mike.
No one is saying Mike’s a dragon slayer or Hopper, but what’s being said is that Mike Wheeler doesn’t need to be. He knows he won’t win, he knows he’ll get knocked down, but he will never cower in fear and will fight even if it’s a death wish. He’d pick up a sword even if it bought people three seconds to run or live. He’s shown to us as someone who will but himself in front of danger to protect others. He’s so perfect because he knows he has a high likely hood of losing any physical battle he goes into and still doesn’t hesitate. Unlike Nancy or Hopper or even Steve, he doesn’t have a belief or arrogance that he’s got it in the bag, of course he wasn’t going to do anything with a candle stick or fight Billy, but he tried. He’s gonna try and try and will be the front of any fight just because he’s the bravest motherfucker out there.
That’s what makes him more brave or badass than any other character. He knows he will not win a physical battle. Mike doesn’t have an ounce of belief that he’s gonna take down the monster or make the right shoot. And he still stands proud and without fear to fight. He’s a true soldier because of that pure bravery and selflessness.
Put respect on his name✊ Mike will have a sword not cause he’s gonna be a trained dragon slayer, but because he’s Mike Wheeler and he’s not gonna let something kill him or anyone without a fight. He’s always going to try.

Mike coming out to Will sometime during season 5 before they’ve confessed their feelings for each other or anything hehe
For the writing prompt requests <3 also CONGRATS ON 1500 ANDI U DESERVE IT!!
hi elli!!! oh my god this prompt 🥺 this is so sweet, and it was so much fun to write. (side note i have now written like 3 coming out stories in the span of a week so. that's fun!) also tysm!!! <3 i hope you enjoy this!
—
you pull me in (and i’m a little more brave)
Mike Wheeler has two secrets.
He’s never really been a person who has liked keeping secrets, at least not from his friends. He’s kept secrets from his parents for his entire life, so that doesn’t really matter. But Mike has always tried to be honest with his friends. After all, the Party’s first rule isn’t “friends don’t lie” for nothing.
But Mike Wheeler has two secrets, and he’s kept them close to his chest for the past couple of years.
The first secret is this:
Mike Wheeler is gay.
Yeah, that… that had been something difficult to come to terms with. It all started back in the fall of 1985 before everything went to shit and before the world started ending and before they got trapped into an interdimensional war with One and the monsters of the Upside Down. Talk about an awful time to have a sexuality crisis.
Seriously. Mike spent… a lot of sleepless nights, absolutely terrified that his first big secret would be found out. When you’re fighting a monster who literally reaches into your brain and brings out the worst parts of you—the parts that you’re terrified to even admit to yourself—it’s really not a good idea to have this big of a secret.
At least… at least that’s what Will said when he came out as gay, early last year.
God, he’s the bravest person that Mike knows. There’s no one braver in the world than Will Byers—not even El, whom Mike believes is really fucking brave. But El, as incredible as she may be, is also a superhero. Of course, she can bravely face monsters and government scientists and anything the world throws at her. Mike thinks he’d be braver too if he was better than Superman.
Will’s just Will though, and he’s been through so much. And yet, he makes the decision to get back up every time the world tries to knock him down. He stands up against all the monsters and the bullies and every single being that’s ever hurt him, and yet, he still manages to be the kindest, most loving person Mike has ever met. He’s never lost sight of who he is, and everything he does inspires Mike to be braver.
There’s no one braver than Will Byers—no one better in the world than Will Byers.
And that’s exactly why Mike decides that Will Byers should be the first person in the world to learn his secret.
The two of them are sitting in Mike’s bedroom now. Earlier, he’d asked Will if they could talk—alone, he’d been quick to add. Naturally, Will had been a little bit confused, but he’d nodded and promised to come over to Mike’s room in the lab after dinner.
And so… here they are.
Mike’s heart pounds inside his chest, and his hands feel clammy. Of all the people in the world, Will is going to be the most accepting. Everyone in the extended Party has been accepting of Will and Robin (who’d come out a few months before Will), so honestly, Mike knows he shouldn’t worry about their reactions. But still, he’s never shared this secret with anyone before, and… and it’s terrifying.
But this is Will.
And Will makes him feel brave.
So, with Will Byers’ kind hazel eyes staring back at him, Mike takes a deep breath, and he wrings his hands nervously.
And he chooses to let his walls down.
“Will… I… I’m gay,” Mike admits, his voice impossibly soft. He doesn’t dare look up at his best friend—not yet. The memories of words so cruel and so hurtful, said years ago on a day full of pouring rain and his worst mistakes, make their way to the forefront of his mind. “I… I’ve known for a while now, and I, um… I didn’t want to admit it... But I… I don’t want to hide anymore.”
Another breath—shaky and quiet this time.
Mike dares to look up, and he meets Will’s eyes. “I, um… I said some things to you when we were younger,” Mike whispers, and though his vision is a little blurry because of the tears stinging his eyes, he can still see the recognition that flashes across Will’s face. “Some really, really hurtful things… and I’m sorry, Will. I… I know it’s no excuse, but… that’s when I was first starting to realize this about myself… And I was scared, and I took it out on you. And I’m sorry… I’m so sorry.”
One more breath. In and out.
“I wanted to tell you first,” Mike says, his voice soft, “not… not just because you’re gay too, but… but because you’re my best friend in the entire world, Will. And I just… I trust you more than anyone else, you know? And also… because you make me feel brave enough to be myself. So… yeah. That’s it, I guess.”
For a moment, Will just stares back at Mike, as if he’s searching for… for something or trying to understand Mike better. There’s curiosity but also compassion and understanding in Will’s eyes, and before Mike knows it, he’s being pulled into Will’s arms.
“Oh, Mike,” Will whispers, holding him close.
The embrace is warm and familiar and comforting, and God, fresh tears well in Mike’s eyes as he all but collapses into Will’s hug. Will’s arms wrap around him tighter in response, and Mike sniffles, burying his head in his best friend’s shoulder.
“I’m so proud of you,” Will murmurs, rubbing Mike’s back gently. “God, I am so, so proud of you, Mike. You have no idea. Thank you. Thank you for… for trusting me and for being you. You’re incredible, and I’m so proud of you.”
Somehow, just like he always does, Will knows exactly what to say. He knows exactly what Mike needs to hear, and Mike can’t help the watery laugh that escapes his lips. “I didn’t really do anything,” he admits. “Nothing that you haven’t done.”
“Hey.” Will pulls back, just enough so they can look at each other now, and he smiles at Mike, gentle and familiar. “Coming out is terrifying no matter what, and it’s not about me. It’s about you and how brave you are and how incredible it is that you’re accepting who you are. So… I mean it, Mike. I’m proud of you, and thank you for trusting me enough to tell me.”
Will pauses for a brief moment; then, he smiles again. “When I came out,” he says softly, “Robin told me this… She said that the world becomes a better, more beautiful place whenever anybody accepts who they are and shares it with the world. So… just remember that, okay?”
Mike can’t help but smile, and he reaches up, putting his hand on top of Will’s. “Okay,” he whispers back. “Thanks, Will… Seriously. Thank you for… for everything.”
The look on Will’s face turns soft again, and for a moment, the world shrinks until it’s just the two of them. Something wildly beautiful and familiar and electric lingers in the air between them, close enough for Mike to reach out and grab it, and he nearly does.
Because, you see, Mike Wheeler has two secrets—though, he’s now shared one of those secrets with someone and is starting to find the courage to share it with others.
The first secret is this:
Mike Wheeler is gay.
The second one is… a little more complicated than the first, and it’s this:
Mike Wheeler is in love with Will Byers.

I wanna send in head cannons too! Sorry this is long as shit❤️
Steve used to flex having a pool so the other kids would wanna come over.
Bug thinks of really good, snarky, clever comebacks but never say any of them out loud cause she feels mean when she does
Jonathan taught but how to drive, he nearly had a heart attack but he still taught her ( neither can parallel park)
Nancy used to wear glasses but stopped in the beginning of highschool out of embarrassment
Bug never thought about her looks until highschool, she was always a bit of a tomboy but growing up her style kinda changed into a more feminine one. She doesn't think she's pretty. She doesn't think she's ugly either, but she rarely feels pretty.
Will feels awkward around Steve. He knows that something happened with him and Jonathan, and him even though he doesn't know what it was he still feels conflicted. Steve will give all the kids rides and will just sits quietly while the rest of the group talks over each other.
Bugs nightmares got worse after going into the tunnels. All she sees is will running around desperately trying to crawl out. Sometimes she's in there with him but they just keep going in circles and she can't get him out.
Bug put glow in the dark stars on her ceiling for Jonathan. Now whenever Steve comes over he can't feel comfort in the light because he knows it wasn't meant for him.
Mike and bug definitely do some mad scientist shit. Mike thinks up crazy things and bug is too curious to stop him. Yes they have causes small fires, no one was hurt but flammables have been hidden inside the wheeler home. ( You blow up one toaster suddenly you're not allowed to use one unsupervised)
Steve plays basketball with Lucas and teaches him everything he knows.
Dustin puts flowers or little trinkets on/ near mews grave. Not enough to cause suspicion from his mom, but enough to show his remorse.
At any family reunion if there's a baby Steve will be holding them. If they cry he'll spend the rest of the time trying to cheer them up. ( His baby cousins cry when they have to leave and want to stay with him)
Max and El look up to bug as an older sister. Max thinks bug is the bravest person ever, she inspired max to stand up to Billy (the most she can) and El loves how strong bug is. El and max will beg to sleepover and now have " sleep over at moms"
Steve wakes up to bug sitting on the floor reading comics in the middle of the night. No matter how tired he is he'll always join her and laugh at all her " nerd knowledge" ( " did you know there's a comic where peters radioactive semen kills MJ?" " Angel what the fuck is wrong with you?" " Well I didn't write it." )
oh jon 1000% taught bug how to drive and it was the closest theyve ever been to ending their friendship and they had to agree to never talk about the experience ever again (will and dustin had joined for fun and were left traumatized)
steve and babies ,,,, my HEART
all of these are wonderful and lovely and painful (the glow in the dark stars ,,, how dare u) and the mike and bug mad scientists thing made me giggle theyre the same person tbh and no one encourages mike and also berates mike more than bug and their science experiments are proof of that LMAO

Hi so I’m requesting Steddie (Steve and Eddie from stranger things) I just idk I have this idea where Steve and Eddie like hangout a lot after Eddie leaving the hospital and his name was cleaned and Ms Wheeler invites everyone for a dinner party and Holly started talking to Eddie and he read her a book and play with her and so they were like besties and later in the day Mike asked him to do a campaign for Will and then Nancy wanted to talk to him about the bi crisis she was going through and they are besties and then Ms Wheeler asked Eddie to help her in the kitchen and so Steve was jealous and then idk Ted Wheeler actually being nice and talking about the weather with Eddie and Dustin and everyone thinking Steve was jealous because everyone loves Eddie but actually he was jealous the Wheelers were taking Eddie from him something like that hahah btw love your writing a lot x
Thank you so much, I'm glad you're enjoying my stuff so far! 💕
Warnings: none
**
"Eddie the banished" very soon turned into "Eddie the beloved", as it seemed.
He pretty much became everyone's favorite at the house party the Wheelers threw: Steve now started to wonder if they actually only organized that event to celebrate Eddie, and all the other guests were just there as decoration.
Not that Steve minded. Eddie deserved all the love he was getting after being hated and hunted by the whole town for a crime he didn't commit, and after the insane amount of trauma he went through. He saw people being killed, he suddenly met an armada of terrifying monsters, then nearly got killed by some of them. He was fresh out of the hospital, still healing from his injuries, and Steve actually really liked seeing him getting better and better.
After the doctors released him from the hospital, Steve has taken it upon himself to be there for Eddie as much as possible. They spent quite a lot of time together, and Steve had to realize that he has grown quite attached to the guy he used to think of as a freak.
Actually, Eddie was sweet. He was quirky and strange, but he had a very kind heart, and he was one of the bravest people Steve has ever met. He was very good-looking too, Steve had to admit.
So, no, Steve didn't mind Eddie getting attention. He just wanted to be the only one giving it to him.
He always lingered behind, watching as Eddie played with Holly. He couldn't help but smile softly as the little girl climbed into Eddie's lap, demanding a story. How could anyone believe this boy was dangerous? He might have been a metalhead, with long, unruly hair and in ripped denim and faded leather, but if you spent more than one minute with him, you immediately realized just how sweet he actually was.
Warmth spread through Steve's chest as he watched Eddie reading from a children's book, doing exaggerated faces and sounds to entertain Holly. His cheeks were still pale and scarred from the battle with the demobats, but his eyes shone like a million stars. Steve's heart fluttered when Eddie looked up and their eyes met for a second. Eddie gave him a small wave, and Steve waved back awkwardly, his cheeks pinkening.
He really wished he had the courage to go and talk to Eddie. Once Holly went off to play with someone else, Mike took her place and started nagging Eddie about some DnD campaign for Will, a conversation from which Steve didn't understand a single word. He scoffed and moved away, hoping that if Mike was finished, he would get a chance to be with Eddie.
No such luck. Nancy swooped in and took Eddie to the side. They were clearly talking about something deep and personal, because Nancy was blushing and Eddie seemed to be comforting her. Now, Steve knew Nancy wouldn't go for Eddie (especially because it seemed like she was more interested in Robin lately), but the spikes of jealousy wouldn't leave Steve's heart as he watched them embrace.
The Wheeler parents stole Eddie next. Even Ted was more talkative than usual, actually making an effort to make a conversation, while Mrs. Wheeler entrusted Eddie with helping out in the kitchen. Steve watched this all happen with increasing frustration.
Obviously Dustin, as observant as he was, noticed that Steve was fuming.
"You're not jealous he's getting all the attention, are you?" He questioned Steve, eyebrows raised. "That's not like you."
"No, not at all," Steve replied quickly, "he deserves all the attention after what he's been through."
"But something is bothering you," Robin added, "I can tell. You've been eyeing him all night."
"Am I that obvious?" Steve chuckled, his cheeks turning a deep shade of red. "No, it's just, uhm... we've grown closer after he got out of the hospital, and I... I guess I just kinda miss being the only one there for him."
"Oh, you like him," Nancy said softly, "so you're jealous of everyone."
"You guys kept stealing him away the whole night," Steve huffed. Dustin laughed, shaking his head at him.
"God, Steve. Just go and steal him back, then!"
"Steal who back?"
They all turned around to see Eddie standing in the doorway with a curious look on his face. Steve honestly thought his heart and head would both explode when Eddie gave him a small smile.
"You," Dustin said easily. Steve groaned and slapped his arm, making the younger boy let out a loud "ow" sound.
"Oh, well," Eddie chuckled, "I might have been basking in the attention, I admit."
He looked at Eddie, his smile widening. "But I'm more than happy to indulge you, too."
Good Lord, Steve thought. He thought he was going to die from not being able to be close to Eddie the whole night, but he might actually be dying now that Eddie sat next to him on the couch. Nancy and Robin fled the room to give them some privacy, dragging Dustin with them.
"So..." Eddie started after some quiet, "why are you so jealous of everyone?"
"Erm..."
That was all Steve was able to say. Eddie's eyes were so beautiful, and he looked so genuine, and kind, and his knee brushed Steve's.
Deciding he needed way more alcohol in his system to be able to tell Eddie why, he reached for his glass.
He felt Eddie's curious eyes on him while he drank the liquid courage.

always rising from the ashes, mending all his gashes
by wldstdreams
"Get in." Steve simply told the two of them, pulling his best friend by her arm and forcing her into the car. Knowing her, Robin would do or say something buck wild that would turn the already grim atmosphere much worse. It was just in her nature to do so. While the two of them had no issue being paired up together for a task, the same thing couldn't be said for the unmoving boys. Well, for one of them. Will was not fond with the choice to bring Mike along with them when Max, Lucas, Dustin, or anyone else would all suffice just the same. In that same boat, Mike wasn't happy with how obvious it was that he wasn't in Will's good graces at the moment.
He was getting exiled by the one person who he'd execute himself for. Eleven and the rest of them are great and even more than that. Mike wouldn't ever deny that fact. That's just to say that none of them are Will.
This may not be a down that they could come back from, but Mike would try his hardest to salvage his friendship with Will even if it meant confessing a deep secret of his.

Mike Wheeler headcanons bc why not??? (Mostly Mike & Nancy)
He paints his nails. Mosty in black
Is never home because he can’t stand his family
He’s scared to show emotions and cry because of his father „rule” – Men don’t cry
Loses his socks every time
He’s scared of storms. When he was a kid he slept with Nancy during them. But now he is embarassed to go to his sister so he must deal it with himself
Cat person
He shakes his head like a dog when he gets out of shower (Nancy hates it with passion)
Nancy taught him how to paint his nails
Will gave him a stuffed dinosaur for his 8th birthday, he still sleeps with him, but would rather die that admit it. Nancy is the only that knows that, she makes fun of that, but inside she thinks that is cute.
Secretly loves old literature, he can spend nights on reading
He was raised in a homophobic family. His grandparents and parents. When he started having feelings for Will he hated himself more than anything in this world. But then he and Nancy had a heart to heart talk, she convinced him that there’s nothing wrong about being gay, bisexual or whatever you want. People shouldn’t be juiced for who they love. (I need Mike & Nancy moments in s5 please)
He randomly brings up Will to conversations “Will would love that idea!” or “Will likes this color”
Him and Nancy had a very strong bond when they were younger. He thought that his sister is like the coolest and bravest person in the world (he secretly still thinks that) but when Nancy started high school Mike thought that she wouldn’t like to spend time with her little brother and they started to separate
He cried when Holly was born

Paper rings; part 12
A/N: I’m really sorry about the delay. Life happens and this is a hard episode for me to watch. My son was born very very early and was intubated for a very long time, I sat in horror a lot of nights when something would happen and the tube would need to be pulled. It’s hard for me to see that scene and the hopper hospital scene after puts a sinking feeling in my chest.
Warning; cussing, stranger things spoilers, angst at the end and idk I’m probably missing a lot lol
You had to take a minute to compose yourself before you headed back to the kids, you knew it was stupid. Any sane person in this situation would be scared but you needed to put on a front for the kids. You shook out your limbs and you wiped away your tears and you headed back to them but before you could make it to far you heard the gym doors familiar sound and turned quickly all the smaller kids were sitting on the bleachers which meant….
You ran outside “what are you doing?!” You yelled at Jonathan and Nancy as the both stopped in their tracks “we have to go…we have to help mom and hopper” Jonathan spoke quietly without even turning towards you.
“You could have told me instead of taking off…” you knew you couldn’t stop them. “We thought you’d try to make us stay…” this time it’s Nancy that finally looks up at you and you step forward grabbing both of them into a tight hug “you come back! You hear me?” And you squeezed a little harder before letting them go.
When you came back inside Mike was pacing “where are they? Do you know where they went?” He was questioning you but before you could get an answer out Eleven answered for you “Demogorgon”
These kids were the bravest kids you fucking knew, jumping up as soon as eleven mentioned the name and now everyone was ready to leave. You had to take a deep breath and think, you just openly sent Jonathan and Nancy on their way to fuck knows where. Could you have stopped them? No maybe not but a part of you asked yourself if you didn’t even try because they mentioned helping Hopper. You fumbled with your hands next to you wishing Jim was next to you, he would notice and would slip his hand into yours to ground you. A couple more deep breaths and you decided right then and there no one was dying tonight. You were gonna be as brave as these kids and get your shit together, for them, for the Byers family, for Jim.
“We stick to the chiefs plan, we stay out of sight and keep El safe. I still think it’s the best plan” Lucas was trying to convince Mike that we need to stay safe and stay here.
“She’s with Jonathan he’ll keep her safe” and you truly thought that. You knew Jonathan would keep Nancy safe and you wanted Mike not to worry.
“Plus she’s kind of a badass now” Dustin mentioned which made you smile.
While the boys continued arguing about whatever it was, you went to settle next to Eleven. You moved your arms toward her slowly making sure not to scare her before you put your arm around her shoulder and pulled her close. “You did great, I’m very proud of you” you whispered only to her and you caught her looking up with a bright smile. You wanted nothing more than to protect this sweet girl from the world.
“Where do you think you’re going?” You jumped up as Dustin was walking towards the door.
“To find some chocolate pudding, El needs to recharge and the lunch lady hoards that shit” Dustin yelled back and kept walking so you gathered the kids to follow him.
“You know I’m trying to give you a pass because of the whole monsters are real and trying to kill us shit but y’all have to stop cussing in front of me! You know I’m an adult right?” You looked at each of the boys as you were walking towards the cafeteria. You knew El really did need to get her strength up but no one was going anywhere alone.
“I don’t know Nora it just doesn’t really feel like it?” Mike chipped in causing you to turn around “you just feel like one of us…” that made you smile at him but Mike Wheeler couldn’t help the word vomit that followed “even though we saw you suck face with the chief” moment ruined.
“What’s suck face?” You heard El whisper to smile before Dustin’s yelling about the damn pudding overshadowed her.
You tried not to eavesdrop you really did but something about listening to Mike Wheeler try to explain why his whole family would be like El’s family but he definitely wouldn’t be like her brother because “it’s different” he said just really helped your anxious thoughts lift a little.
You were trying not to dwell on what Jim was doing right now when your thoughts were pulled to the window as headlights flew past them. You saw Mike Jump up “Hey! Hang on…” you said but you couldn’t catch up with him and you didn’t want to leave El alone. It wasn’t long before you heard his footsteps running back into the room before your heart sank “they found us…” he said
You gathered all the kids up quickly and put them behind you before you turned around “listen to me..” you didn’t want your voice to waiver, you had to be strong.
“No matter what, you stay behind me! You stay together and you protect El and I will protect all of you okay?” They just shook their heads “let’s go”
You were running down the hallway trying to find a door while the kids were talking behind you about how they thought they might have found us. The reasoning didn’t matter though, they just couldn’t keep us. Down the stairs you reached the stairs the same time you saw a group of agents walking in so you quickly turned around with the kids to find another. It didn’t take long before you were surrounded but before much couldn’t happen you felt El step up behind you and while you stuck your hand out to her you watched as lights flashed and blood began pouring from the agents eyes.
Before you could even begin to process what just happened you felt the small girl collapse beside you and you heard Mike yelling for El to wake up. You didn’t know much but you knew you couldn’t stay here so you scooped El up just in time to turn around to Brenner “step away from the child” he said sternly and you actually laughed.
“Fuck you” it felt like venom rising from your throat.
“Hello Elenora, I see you’ve grown up” and your veins ran cold.
“Who the fuck is elenora?” Dustin spewed back and all you could do was look at him “I’ll allow it” you said quietly to him and he smiled “step behind me boys”
“No! If you want her you’ll have to kill us!” Mike shouted as he went around to stand in front of you.
“Eat Shit” Lucas yelled before he took his place at your other side.
Before any of you could react agents came barreling in behind you and grabbed all the boys and yourself. You kept a strong grip on a still unconscious Eleven.
“Look at both my strongest girls together, I never dreamed you two would meet” Brenner spoke as he stepped towards you all again. You tried to fight but the grip on you just became tighter as Brenner ripped her from your arms.
“Eleven, ELEVEN! Can you hear me?” He shook the girl and you watched her eyelids flutter “papa..” she let out in just a whisper and your heart shattered
“Yes it’s papa…” he spoke back to her and you couldn’t contain yourself “you sick fuck” you spoke at him
“Mike…Mike…Mike” you watched the girl get louder as she reached for him and you felt sick.
“Think Nora think, how the fuck do we get out of this? What would Jim do?” You thought to no one but yourself but before you could think of an answer the lights flickered and then you heard the shrills
“Demogorgon” Dustin spoke beside you and then you saw the creature emerge from the walls.
The agents behind you let you all go as they began to draw their guns and fire. You used this as an opportunity to quickly pick El up from the ground and rush the boys away.
“Don’t look back, just run. Just keep running…” you yelled at them as the Gunshots still went on behind you.
The boys lead you into one of the rooms where you could place El on a table, you could tell she was struggling. She looked weak and the blood was running from her nose but Mike didn’t care. He leaned down over the table and talked to Eleven about his mom getting her a bed and how he was going to take her to the snowball dance.
“Promise?” She asked and tears welled in your eyes because of how fragile she sounded. “Promise” Mike spoke back to her.
You reached for her hand and his “I’m gonna help you pick out the perfect dress to wear okay?” You asked her and she smiled and you wanted to live in this moment forever. You loved these kids. You closed your eyes and squeezed their hands but then you heard the screeches of the animal grow louder. You stood and forced the boys behind you again.
And then the door broke and all Hell broke lose, the boys struggled to get something out of Lucas’ backpack and you looked for anything you could find. As Lucas was pelting the beast with rocks from his slingshot your eyes caught wind of a microscope and you reached for it. It all happened so quick, you grabbed the weapon and struck the monster as hard as you could. Once, twice and as you feared back the third time the beast opened up its face and swiped at you.
“Fuck” you yelped as you dropped the microscope and pulled your arm back. You held it there covered in large gashes and gushing blood and your eyes frantically searched for anything else to use to protect the kids. You winced as you tried to pick up the original weapon again but then you watched the monster get forcefully shoved back into the blackboard and you stood abruptly looking around. You turned around just as El began her walk towards the Beast.
Both you and Mike stepped forward to yell but Mike got there first “No, El stop!” He pleaded with her before she used her powers to push you all back away from what was going to happen. You slid backwards into the desk behind you and caught Mike as he was headed the same direction. You looked forward in horror and the monster was writhing under Els powers and when she turned to face you all the tears began to fall as you squeezed Mike tight to your chest.
The mister began yelling but that wasn’t the sound that was going to haunt your nightmares. No, you would remember the screams of a brave little girl who sacrificed her life for you all and would remember her body and spirit float away in pieces like confetti.
You finally let Mike go when he began screaming for El. You sat there as the boys frantically searched for their lost friend and you broke. You broke for the girl who deserved more out of her life than bad men with shitty agendas. You wanted to give her the world, you wanted to help her pick out a dress for the dance so she could see how beautiful she was, you wanted to watch Mike Wheeler fumble over his words a couple hundred more times when he tried to speak to her. You just wanted her to have more.
You finally stood and wrapped your arms around all three boys and you held them. You held them until you heard the paramedics enter and even then you wouldn’t let them take the boys from you. You walked them out to the ambulances and stood in the middle of all three covered with a blanket as you watched all the boys like hawks.
“I’ll never lose another one of you” you whispered to no one, not a prayer. A promise to whatever was listening “Not another one”
Not until every last boys ambulance took off towards the hospital did you finally take off towards the hospital. You walked in slowly, as all the boys parents sat in the waiting room looking for answers and that’s when you saw him. He stood abruptly when he finally saw you and you shattered, fell into his chest and sobbed “you came back to me…” you heaved into his chest and he just held you.
When you finally looked up from Jim you saw Nancy sitting beside her mother and you stepped towards her. She stood and you wrapped her in the tighter embrace you could offer with one good arm “thank god you’re okay” you whispered into her hair. You took a step back when you saw her mothers gaze “sorry…” you muttered and she stood up and hugged you ferociously “thank you for taking care of my boy” and you just cried again.
You moved down the line when you saw Dustin and Lucas asleep, a chair between them and Mike was calling your name so you sat down and put your arms around Mike “I’m so sorry…” is all you could say and you both cried together. You looked up and made eye contact with Hopper who looked confused but you couldn’t explain anything before the door to the waiting area opened and in walked Jonathan before you could remove your arms from Mike he jumped up and shook his friends “he’s up!” He yelled “Wills up!” And they ran out of the area.
You stood and Hopper met you with an arm out reached to wrap around your midsection and you put yours around his waist as you walked out the door. “You need to have that looked at..they said you refused” he said sternly next to you and you rolled your eyes at him “I had to make sure my boys were safe first and then there was talk of Will being found and I just needed to get to you” your voice broke at the end and he stopped and squeezed you tight.
“Well I’m here now and we need to make sure you’re okay” he kissed the crown of your head and you finally relaxed into his body again “I can’t lose you..” he whispered and that made your breath hitch as you looked up into his glossy eyes “you won’t” you whispered before you kissed him. You used your one good arm to wipe a tear falling down his cheek when he pulled back and put his forehead against yours.
“Can I see will first?” You whispered to him and you heard him let out a small chuckle.
“Yeah baby..” as he lead you down the hallway to Wills room you could hear the boys getting louder and louder talking about his funeral and the girl that cried for him.
You both hovered in the doorway, Hopper behind you with a protective hand on your hip as you listened to the boys go on and on. You reached out your hand and caught Jonathan’s before giving it a small squeeze and you let it go so he could go be with brother.
You listened to the Boys tell Will about El and how she saved you all by defeating the Demogorgon and then you heard it. “She’s gone now…” Mike whispered and you didn’t miss the way Hopper tensed behind you.
When you finally felt at peace you let Hopper lead you to the nurses station where you asked to be looked at. Luckily for you your arm just needed a good clean and a sample taken to make sure nothing from the beast was left behind and then a few stitches to finish you up. Jim didn’t leave your side through anything, never even letting go of your hand for a second. He pulled you close when you winced at the stitches and kissed you “to take your mind off the pain” he said and you couldn’t wipe the smile of your face for anything. The doctor told you that you were free to go you just needed to wait for your discharge paper work and you smiled at Jim but he seemed lost in thought and you could tell something was bothering him now.
“Sooo…” he began to speak and he let your hand drop and your heart and stomach went right a long with it.
“What uhm…what exactly happened with the girl?”

MY TOP FIVE MIKE WHEELER SONGS
dedicated to @strangerthingsiscool
(Scrawny; Fair Game; Pictures of Girls; What Once Was; Remember When)
Scrawny by Wallows
I'd switch it up but I don't like change - in s1, he has trouble accepting the fact that will is missing, causing him to be the most hopeful/desperate when looking for him. in s2, mike doesn't like the fact that max seems to be on her way to joining the party because he's perfectly content with the way the four of them are. in s3, the camera focuses on him longer than everyone else as the Byers and El drive away to California. He looks back at the Byers house sadly, showing that he's struggling with the fact that they're moving away and that things will change.
Scrawny motherfucker with a cool hairstyle - i don't think i need to elaborate. however, the "cool hairstyle" line won't apply anymore if it's confirmed that he has a rat tail.
I say the wrong shit at the right times - he's prone to saying things without thinking ("It's not my fault you don't like girls!", lying to el, being snappy to max, etc.)
It isn't all about what you see / Question though, how do I look to you? - he acts like he's confident and secure, but he secretly needs validation and reciprocated feelings from others.
Fair Game by Dayglow
I'm broken - emo mike jfkasjfdjjf
I've been losing my mind for quite some time - he's been losing his mind since kindergarten lmao ("crazy together")
Where did I lose you? - refers to losing Will, losing El, losing his childhood and the things/people that represent it.
I guess the game we play is taking different shape - games are a big part of mike's life (dungeons and dragons, arcade games), but as he grows up, the games change (romance, heartbreak, drifting friendships).
Pictures of Girls by Wallows
You and I, we grew up in the suburbs / Now you're gone, the city's down a number - will and mike grew up together since they were in kindergarten, and now will's moved away.
It is not the same without you around - we already saw from the end of s3 that mike missed the byers and el before they even left.
I see you there, still shy but smiling / Now I find it hard to remember / All the times I tried to forget her - this makes me think of the crazy together scene, with will smiling slightly and the "tried to forget her" line referring to s2 mike's grief over el.
Cause pictures of girls are not for me - gay
You should be down in Hollywood - i know that this line is saying that this person is beautiful/could be a movie star, but hollywood is also in california, which is where the byers and el moved to lol.
What Once Was by Her's
I'm heading back inside to sit at home with you - mike going to will's house in s2 after the field episode; mike staying with will at the hospital, etc.
My friends put on their bravest face - the party fighting the upside down shit.
Something's out of place - this can also refer to the monsters and disappearances related to the upside down.
I was at the point where all I really wanted was someone - mike's friendship with el stemmed from him feeling like she understood certain things, and also that she could help find will. later in their relationship, he wanted someone to help him cover up his homosexuality ldsjafjdff
And now I'm still hanging on - he's clinging to el in s3 because his relationship with her eliminates any suspicions of what he's hiding.
Please don't let go when you've had enough - after will gets upset at mike in s3, he immediately goes to apologize to him because he can't bear the thought of will letting go of him.
Remember When by Wallows
(i know this is the third wallows song but i can't help it they all fit him)
I remember when we ran from the pool / All the decorations up in your room - obviously this didn't happen with will and mike (as far as we know), but the singer is talking about vivid memories that he has, and we know that mike and will have a lot of history.
And I couldn't find the right words to use / But I knew that you knew - i know i keep referencing the crazy together scene, but... even though mike didn't say "i love you", we know that crazy = love. and although he didn't explicitly tell will that he loved him, will understood.
When I look around, you're gone - after will left, mike must have missed him a lot, and probably often forgot that will was gone only to be reminded again.
I can still see you at the place I know / When I close my eyes - will and mike grew up in hawkins together, so it's safe to assume that almost every location in the town has a memory with him attached to it.
Do you remember when we felt like the only two alive? - this seems pretty straightforward.

Spit Blood and Bare your Teeth

by sky_daybreak
Steve was certain that these kids were at once the bravest and most reckless people he had ever met. So when the monsters came, there was nothing left to do, but plant himself right between them and danger and hope to somehow help them all survive.
When the proverbial and literal dust settled after the Gate was closed, Steve found himself with the expected amount of new and old night terrors and unexpected new friendships with a bunch of brave, reckless middle-schoolers.
Hawkins carried on like before, unaware of the pieces left to be picked up and the bigger, darker secrets once again hidden away from them. And amongst it all, Billy found himself forced to take a good long look at himself.

Mike Wheeler x Badass! Reader
(creds to gif owner)
💗 Pairing: Mike Wheeler x Reader
Requested: yes! oof catch me making ANOTHER request! plS do a mike wheeler x reader hc where the reader is super BADASS and like the total opposite of mike. like soft boi mike & BAD BITCH READER and the rest of the party is like ?? how tf did you manage to make her your gf?? THX ILYSM
a/n: not really an author's note, I just wanted to say i love my boy mike wheeler
🔥Warnings:
a couple swear words
Word Count: 1345 (wow wow wow)
You and Mike Wheeler were the couple that no one understood
Like, you were you
And he was Mike (soft boi™)
Polar opposites
you had a bad girl reputation
You weren't a bad kid
You had great grades,
and you had friends,
and adults loved you
But among your peers you were a total badass
(see: female richie tozier minus the inappropriate jokes)
You definitely rocked ripped jeans and denim jackets and bomber jackets and aviators and you were always chewing gum
You were also quite a dude magnet but you were never really interested
You were friends with Max almost immediately after she moved to Hawkins
Because let's face it
People were kind of intimidated by you because of your bad bitch exterior
You were not a force to be reckoned with
So you only had a few close friends who had broken the seal that was your outside
Max, however, was drawn to you
Because you were the most interesting person she had seen in almost a month of living in Hawkins
And you found out after meeting her outside that arcade that you both had shit brothers
(which was part of the reason both of you were so intense and hard exterior-ed)
It wasn't only Max who was drawn to you though
A specific Dungeons and Dragons playing group of four boys found you quite intriguing
SO intriguing that they took to watching you and Max almost everywhere you went
Because they never had the courage to actually talk to either you
Admiring from a distance was so much better
The group had been split down the middle
Dustin and Lucas took to watching (and fighting) over Max
While Mike took to watching you
Because you were so pretty and so badass and he didn't understand why he couldn't just go up to you and talk to you
This was harder than fighting the demogorgon
(will, soft boi™ 2, just wanted to be friends, so he tagged along on his friends stalking expeditions)
You and Max knew about all of this
(Minus the whole crushes thing)
Because they were not very good at being stealthy
You just figured they were strange, teenage boys
So one day, you caught them staring at you while you and Max were at the arcade
And one part of you wanted to go up to them and ask what they wanted
But that plan was foiled as you met eyes with a really cute curly headed boy
Who, by the way, hadn't stopped staring at you
Even after he was caught
So, you pulled Max away from her Dig Dug game and dragged her over to the group
Who were now pretending to be doing something other than staring at the two of you
“So, are you guys ever going to talk to us or is this some kind of really intense staring contest?”
They were shook by your bluntness
And they didn't really know what to say
So you continued
“Mike, right? You’re in my english class”.
He was shook
You knew his name
You, the ripped jean, hardass exterior girl who had barely ever said a word to him knew. His. name.
And then Lucas (pulling him out of his daze) brought up how they were all confused at how you and Max were constantly beating their arcade game scores
And that's why they were always watching you
(pretty shitty excuse if you ask me)
And that was the first time you had actually talked to any of the boys
Mike was never really fond of Max at first because he found it annoying how often Lucas and Dustin were talking about him when all he wanted to talk about was you
Like c’mon guys Y/N is pretty cool right?
And then when Lucas and Dustin invited Max trick or treating you tagged along
And you spent the entire night talking and laughing with Mike while Dustin and Lucas argued behind Max's back
(Don't worry, you also talked to Will he wasn't alone)
And that's when Mike realized that you were actually really easy to talk to
And really, really pretty
And eventually you tagged along with Max on all of their adventures
you and Mike became attached at the hip
like you did everything together
best friends 100%
Like Lucas did for Max, Mike definitely would've told you everything about eleven and the mind flayer after him accidentally bringing it up
You and Will most definitely became best friends because you both loved old rock music (that’s why Jonathan always liked having you over)
Once you became a part of the party, Troy and James stayed the hell away
Because you would not hesitate to tell them to s h o v e i t
you were the bravest of the group
(if max hadn't won the coin toss you would've been the one driving the car to the hospital with Steve in the back)
but you were also the most caring
would most definitely listen to Max as she complained about her brother
and listen to dustin and Lucas as they complained about max
and listen to will talk about how scared he was
and listen to Mike as he talked about Eleven
When the Snowball rolled around you all decided to go as a group
When you and Max rolled up they were (Another shook coming up btw)
S h o o k
You had ditched your jeans and bomber jacket and adidas sweaters for actual dresses and heels
Actually scratch that
YOU wore a dress, max just wore a sweater and pants but
Still
And you sat beside Mike and you could see him staring and you were kind of hyperventilating
(Just imagine Jake from b99 saying “cool” repeatedly)
Because after all the time you had spent together you had most definitely developed a crush on him
And you sorta knew he liked you too
His friends made it painfully obvious
According to Lucas he was just “really good at flirting but not showing it”
And then Will got asked to dance
And then Lucas FINALLY grew a pair and asked Max to dance
And then Dustin went off
Leaving you and Mike
And it was most definitely awkward for at least thirty seconds, because you both sort of knew what was coming
“Y/N?”
“Yeah, Mike?”
“Wanna dance?”
And yes you did
So, here you were
Dancing in the middle of a crowded gym with Mike Wheeler
He was 100% surprised you had actually said yes because of all the times you said you thought school dances were stupid
“I hate this song”
“Of course you do”
(the rest of the losers were completely shocked that you had said yes to him too, not gonna lie)
And after a few seconds of swaying to the beat and having a few shared laughs he goes all serious
And he kinda just really awkwardly admits that he liked you
“Going soft on me, Wheeler?”
And then you later found out that Lucas and Max were dating
You guys became the parties power couples
Now the two girl badasses of the group had boyfriends
Double dates all the time
Arcade dates when you two were alone
He would most definitely try to teach you Dungeons and Dragons
And to keep up your bad girl exterior you told people you didn't know how to play
But oh yes you did
And you tried to teach him to skateboard
It did not work
Sleepovers and movie nights either alone or with the entire party
If Troy EVER bugged Mike, or any of the party members, you would not hesitate (Max wouldn't either, she had a new found confidence after you)
On the other hand, if anyone ever bugged you, Mike was down to throw hands
After you started dating him the party talked about how soft he had made you
Which wasn't necessarily true
You still skateboarded around town with Max, flipping off bullies in your jeans and black boots and aviators
But you also spent late nights in pyjamas talking to your boyfriend
Because even though you two were complete opposites, it worked so well
final a/n: I haven't written/watched Stranger Things in what feels like forever (yes yes I just posted for Steve but I already had that written lol) and I think I need to get back into it because this is definitely not my best oml but I hope you guys like it

Hole in One
(Or read on ao3.)
Mike was making him nervous. He'd been tapping on the steering wheel ever since he picked him up. When Will's mom had waved from the porch, he'd just hunched his shoulders and smiled awkwardly. He didn't turn on the radio until Will prompted, after they'd sat in uncharacteristic silence for a stifling minute or two.
And Will Byers was already plenty nervous. In truth the hardest part was over (or so he hoped). It had only taken him 5 years to tell his best friend how he felt. And even then it had come out in a horrible mess of stuttering and fear and looking anywhere but Mike's eyes. Because if his eyes were cold Will would fall apart in front of him.
But they weren't cold. Actually, Mike hugged him when he told him that he liked him more than friends were supposed to like each other and that he was sorry if he was making things weird but that the feeling was clawing and beating at his chest too violently to ignore anymore. When Mike said he thought he felt the same Will had cried. It was relief or happiness or fear of what came next. But it was freeing.
"Did Jane come over like she said she would?" Will asked, desperate for some kind of small talk.
Mike's lips quirked up fractionally and he glanced over at Will for a second. "You know El keeps her promises."
Jane Hopper was one of the few aware of their realization of mutual feelings. Mike's parents didn't have a clue (as per usual), as of now Will's mom and brother thought any one on one time between the two was a purely friend thing, and they'd held off on saying anything to the rest of the party until they were sure what they had and how best to explain it.
Mike was one of the few who still called Jane El. It seemed a relic of a time where hands gripped too tightly on weapons and his throat was raw from screaming. Will wasn't sure if he liked the nickname for calling back to a time where they'd fought hardest and needed each other most or if he hated it for the dark pieces of Jane's life it alluded to.
"She told me not to mess this up," Mike said, eyes catching Will's again briefly before he turned back to the road.
"Oh, okay," he replied. He imagined her lecture, sitting him down and speaking in the stern, calculated voice she usually reserved for enemies. Jane was a little protective of Will. Of course she loved them both (and was maybe more attached to Mike than she'd ever be to him) but Jane was always there when someone tried to mess with Will. She wanted to protect him from things he didn't even need protection from.
They fell silent again.
In high school Will Byers was coming into himself. Sure, he got shoved into his fair share of lockers and called nasty things that made him hide in the bathroom stalls and try to catch his breath, but mostly he'd begun taking everything that made him who he was and intensifying it tenfold without fear of judgement.
Hence, he'd taken nearly every art class offered and spent all the after school time he was allotted making things in the art room. He'd started painting his nails even though he got weird looks for it, and making mix tapes of his favorite music to give to the party and Jonathan.
He stopped apologizing for every nightmare and bout of tears and started saying the things he needed to say instead of bottling his emotions up until they cramped and twisted and burned in him like the mind flayer.
And one of those things that needed to be said was that he was head over heels for Mike Wheeler.
Mike flicked on the turn signal and pulled into the mall's parking lot. As they'd grown up it began to replace the arcade as the universal hangout spot. Will and Dustin would read comics and share a basket of fries in the food court. He'd sit beside Max outside a dressing room as Jane modeled a number of dresses and contemplated Max’s suggestion that she add a leather jacket to every outfit she tried on. The six of them had spent far too much time wandering from shop to shop and gossiping about assholes at school or trying to agree on a movie for their weekly movie night.
The mall was also the go to place for dates. Which was why, unless Mike's stony silence meant Will was horribly mistaken, they were here now. It was a date. Their first date, to be precise.
Mike parked and turned off the car. He finally looked over at Will and the look on his face was so anxious and expectant that Will couldn't take it anymore.
"Mike, what's wrong? He asked.
Mike jumped and Will immediately felt bad.
"If you don't want to do this please just tell me," he said quietly. Deep down he knew that this was too good to be true. Mike Wheeler couldn't like him the way Will hoped he would.
"No!" Suddenly Mike was too loud and too close. "No, Will it's not that. I'm just...I'm sorry."
Will looked down at his lap. This wasn't happening the way it was supposed to. "You don't have to lie to make me feel better."
"I'm not lying Will." Mike put a hand on his shoulder and Will looked up.
"I'm nervous," Mike muttered after a moment. "I don't know why I'm so damn nervous."
Will relaxed a fraction. Maybe he could buy that all this weirdness was just awkward freaking out. Doubt creeped at the back of his head like it always did. Knife twisting thoughts weren't unusual for Will Byers. Sometimes, before he closed his eyes at night, his brain told him that he should've stayed stuck in the Upside Down, that everything would be easier for everyone if he'd just let it get him.
"I'm nervous too," he said. "But it's just me. It doesn't have to be that different from hanging out any other time."
"Yeah but..." Mike started, and then stopped. It was different. They both knew it. Saying it wasn't didn't change a thing. Mike's eyebrows furrowed and he looked at Will with determination he usually reserved for D&D or saving the entirety of Hawkins.
"Okay," Mike said at last. "Let's do this."
Will had been to the indoor mini golf place twice before. The first time had been with his mom and Jonathan to celebrate Jonathan getting into NYU. The neon signs and and simple but ridiculous holes were just what the night needed. The whole place was glow in the dark (part of the appeal of mini golfing indoors) but Jonathan brought his camera anyway, and snapped poorly lit shots of Will, whose Star Wars t-shirt glowed as much as the plaster hippo he was trying to hit the ball into. The second time the whole party had gone and Jane had been banned from the establishment for bending a mini golf club (with her mind, though the employee who kicked them out hadn't seen that part.) Jane wasn't much of a golfer.
Will liked how the neon lit up the dark. He'd never been great in the dark (he went to bed with his curtains open to the moonlight and woke up before his alarm when the sunlight came in) but there things felt more comfortable.
Mike's teeth glowed when he smiled, and Will followed him to the counter to buy their games.
"Um." He looked around cautiously. "Two please," he said to the cashier with intent, slapping down a few crumpled bills. He was paying for the both of them, which Will guessed was the final step in making this a true date.
They both stared at the employee with held breath. She just continued chewing the wad of gum in her mouth and counted the money with a bored expression. Success.
"Thanks Mike. I'll get it next time."
"Next time," Mike repeated, looking over at him.
Will blinked. Yeah, he'd already planned their next date (milkshakes at the diner and a drive out to where you could really see the stars) but Mike didn't need to know that yet.
"Um, yeah. If that's alright with you."
"Yeah," he replied, grinning like a dope. "It's alright with me."
Will was better at mini golf than Mike. He was better at concentrating and not getting inordinately frustrated when things didn't go to plan. Mike looked like he was 13 again when he was frustrated: freckled nose crinkling, eyes rolled in the brand of sass his mother used to tell him off for, and arms crossed tightly over his chest.
"You must be cheating," he said, shaking his head as he penciled numbers into their scorecard. "I don't know how but you must be cheating."
Will laughed as he pulled Mike over to the last hole. They had to hit their balls up an impossibly steep incline into a slide that returned them to the proprietors of Hawkins Glow Golf. After a few unsuccessful attempts Mike gave up and irritatedly returned his ball the the front counter.
"It's all you Will," he said now, crouching down to look intently at the plasticky grass. "I believe in you."
His tone was light and joking. By all accounts the statement shouldn't have made Will's heart flip the way it did. He'd said similar things, before he knew how Will felt, and they'd have sleepovers in Mike's basement. Gangly teenage limbs tangled together on the couch as they watched late night sitcom reruns. Mike would laugh and press his shoulder close to Will's and in the commercial breaks sometimes he'd look over at him in soft, unguarded ways that were almost too much all on their own.
"Do you still think about it?" He asked once. It was a dumb question. A question he already knew the answer to.
"Of course I do, Mike." I don't think I'll ever feel truly safe again. He didn't say. Close, maybe. With you sometimes I'm close.
"I think you're the bravest, out of any of us," he'd said matter of factly, eyes straying to a Reese's commercial on the screen. They'd turned the volume down so they wouldn't wake Mike's parents.
"What do you mean?" He'd asked, trying to sound casual but only succeeding in whispering like it was some sort of secret. "I'm not...I mean I was never..."
"Yeah you were. You still are." He hardly looked away from the TV. "Don't try to minimize it. You get put through hell and you stay a great person. That's really something."
"Are you ready Will?" Mike asked him now. He nodded, mechanically, shaking off the memory. He lined up his putter and sucked in a breath. If Hawkins High had a mini golf team he'd probably be a star player, imagine that: Will Byers in a letterman jacket.
He planted his feet firmly and swung, not too much power, just enough. The ball skittered up the incline and hit the slide at just the right speed and angle. They watched as it rolled into the hole and grinned at each other when the accompanying bell dinged.
Then his arms were around Mike's neck, golf club abandoned in a hug that brought Will's face too close to Mike's. His lips brushed his cheek before Mike drew back. Will let go.
"Crap," Mike said. He looked around wildly. "I think I saw some guys from school earlier. We can't just..." He looked around again.
"We can't just what, Mike?" The euphoria of the moment faded into a confused and angry shame. "It was just a hug."
"It was almost more than a hug," Mike whispered back. He looked nervous, panicked even. Will liked the Mike Wheeler of quiet basements and frustrated putting attempts better than the panicked, jumpy one in front of him. What's worse, this Mike Wheeler made him angry.
"What did you take me here for Mike?" He said sharply. "If I can't even hug you."
"Will, keep your voice down."
"Why should I?" Anger and frustration bubbled up inside of him. What was the use of being brave if the person you wanted to be brave for couldn't do the same for you.
"Will, maybe we should..."
Will handed him the golf club roughly.
"Go, right I know. We should go someplace where no one can see you here with me." His breath was coming quick now. The glow in the dark shapes were glowing too brightly in his vision, distorting in a mockery of his pathetic freak out. Zombie boy can't even get a date right.
"Will, that's not it. You know that's not it..."
"I don't know anything Mike," he said.
"It was different with El," Mike looked down. "I never felt..."
"If you'd rather be here with her then fine. Although she's banned from this place so you couldn't come here anyway."
"Will, would you listen to me for one second."
"If you guys are done can you like, move?"
The two of them whipped their heads around to see an irritated looking guy staring at them.
“Well?” He said, with an accompanying raising of eyebrows.
“Yeah,” Will said. Angry, defeated. “I’ll move.”
*** Mike didn’t register how profoundly he’d fucked up until Will wasn’t mini-golfing with him anymore.
He stood there, for a moment or two, just holding the abandoned putter shamefully as the man waiting for him to step aside sighed with increasing annoyance.
El was going to kill him. He couldn’t go to her like this and say that he’d done the one thing she told him not to: screw it up.
Mike Wheeler wasn’t sure he was cut out to date Will Byers. He wasn’t sure he was cut out to date anyone.
He really liked Will. Of course he did. How could he not fall for his best friend when his best friend was so smart and strong and creative and could turn any bad day around with a smile or a meaningful glance? How could he not fall for the kid who’d been to hell and back and still gave a shit about whether or not Mike Wheeler remembered to eat lunch?
But it was different and scary to be in the place between zero and one. It was scary to look over your shoulder before you moved to hold hands. It was scary to piece together how you were going to tell whoever you decided to tell. And when Mike Wheeler got scared he got paranoid and irrational and, apparently, incredibly stupid.
He started by buying him a soft pretzel: cinnamon sugar, his favorite. He found Will at a corner table in the food court.
“I would’ve left but you’re my ride,” he said harshly, not looking up when Mike took the seat across from him.
“I got you a pretzel,” he started because he didn’t know what to say. He held out the aforementioned pretzel.
Will glanced up at him but didn’t take it.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I am. I didn’t want it to go like that.”
“Well, I didn’t either.” He met his eyes and it was almost worse than being ignored because he looked hurt and angry.
“It’s just...I um, I like you and I don’t know what I’m doing.” Mike ran his free hand through his hair nervously.
“Neither do I,” Will said. “But I thought we could go on a date without tiptoeing all over the place. I didn’t think you’d freak out on me.”
It sounded accusatory. Will’s expression was too passionate and open. Mike didn’t know what to do with that yet. He was used to keeping things on the inside.
“I didn’t either. I’m sorry.”
“No one’s stopping you from going back to El, or some other girl it’s easier to date.”
Mike blinked, taken aback.
“I don’t like El like that anymore. You know that.”
Will huffed our a frustrated breath. “Yeah, fine, I know that but I still get worried you’ll...”
Mike was still putting together the rest of a thought and ended up interrupting him. “And you could date some girl too, right? It’d be easier than going with a mess like me.”
“Wait, what?” Will blinked. His expression complicated the way it did when he was thinking through all the potential ramifications of a roll during a D&D campaign. “I can’t date a girl. I don’t like girls the way you like girls.”
“Well...” Mike was grasping at something that, it occurred to him, he hadn’t articulated before. “Doesn’t everyone like both guys and girls? At least a little bit? And you’re just not supposed to talk about it if you like someone who, y’know...if you like someone in a gay way?”
“No, Mike. That’s called being bisexual. Not everyone is bisexual.”
“Oh,” Mike felt his face heat up. “Oh, I didn’t...”
“Mike.”
Mike looked at him. He was taking the pretzel now. His expression looked a little softer than before.
“If you’re not ready, we don’t have to do anything,” he said, voice low and hesitant, but as sincere as ever.
“No! It’s not that. Well maybe today it is that because I guess I don’t know anything about how sexuality works and I kind of feel like my life is a lie just a little bit but no!” He stopped, aware of his rambling. Usually he knew the right things to say around Will. “You didn’t let me finish my sentence earlier.”
“What sentence?”
“It’s different than with El because I never felt like it was as special as this is,” he gestured between them. “El and I are best friends. You and I are best friends and a little more. And that scares me.”
This time Will was the one looking pink. “Okay,” he said. “It scares me too. But we have to be in this together. And you have to trust me. And tell me if you’re not okay with going out like this.”
“I know. You’re right. I’m sorry I can’t mini golf with you like a normal person.”
“We’re never going to be normal people.”
Mike laughed, and it felt like all the tension built up in his chest was being released. He remembered why he’d always wanted to keep Will Byers safe, why he’d always been proud and grateful and lucky to be his friend. Will Byers was honest. And when people didn’t like him for ignorant or petty or fucked up reasons he didn’t back down. He wasn’t normal, and he’d figured out sometime (when Mike wasn’t looking) that that wasn’t something to apologize for. He was the kind of person Mike wanted to be brave for.
“Do you wanna go home?” Will asked. “We could watch a movie at my house?”
“Okay. I’m sorry.”
“I forgive you.”
He was going to be brave.
*** Mike Wheeler hesitated a few moments after he turned off the car. Will could see that his kitchen light was on from their spot in the driveway. His mom was probably cleaning up the dishes and pretending she wasn’t waiting up on him. She didn’t know this was a date (yet.) Will was going to tell her once he was sure there was something worth telling. He looked over at Mike, frozen with his hands on the wheel.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” he said, dazed.
It seemed a very Mike Wheeler thing to assume that everyone else was as taken with every gender as he was. It was almost endearing, Will thought, if it hadn’t fostered this odd trance of sexual confusion. He couldn’t really blame him.
“Do you wanna go in?” He was still trying to wrap his head around the thing Mike had said about him being different and special.
Mike nodded and they got out of the car. It was dark now, stars bright overhead and grass damp beneath their feet. Mike didn’t move so Will walked over to his side of the car and faced him.
“It’s okay if you want to go home Mike,” he said quietly. “It’s late.”
“It’s dark,” Mike said cryptically, looking around.
“Yeah,” Will said.
Mike ran a hand through his hair and hunched over slightly. “Is it okay if I kiss you?” He whispered.
“You don’t have to if you’re not ready.”
“I want to. Do you want to?”
He brain was shouting it but he whispered. “Yes.”
And then Mike was kissing him. It was soft and short and still felt like kind of a secret. It still felt new and scary but also warm and hopeful and important. He pulled away and looked at Mike. His eyelashes fluttered and his freckles were bathed in blue and gold up close.
“Was that okay?” Mike asked.
“Hole in one,” Will said, just so he could hear Mike laugh again.
“I won’t do something worth yelling at me for next time, okay?” Mike said.
“Next time?” Will was smiling.
“Yeah, next time.”

ENFP Fictional Tropes
Most ENFP characters fall under at least one trope. There are many cross overs in tropes and some ENFPs may not fit the categories presented. However, these tropes do loosely address the roles ENFP characters play in narratives.
The Idealist
These ENFPs see the very best in everyone they meet. They are often the person who will forgive and help the most villainous of characters. They often bring out the best in others by just being themselves. They don’t even need to actively help others, but inspire others with their dreams and ideals. Their enthusiasm brought on by their Ne is often enough. Combined with their Fi caring towards individuals makes the caring on top of it. The idealist ENFPs are usually the most optimistic characters you will find.
Examples: Kenneth Parnell (30 Rock), Antoine Triplett (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Mad Hatter (Disney’s Alice in Wonderland), Tara Maclay (Buffy: The Vampire Slayer), Eleventh Doctor (Doctor Who), Buddy the Elf (Elf), Nemo (Finding Nemo), Barry Allen (The Flash), Olaf (Frozen), Kiki (Kiki’s Delivery Service), Ariel (The Little Mermaid), Moana (Moana), Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto Shippuden), Henry Mills (Once Upon a Time), Capheus (Sense8), Joyce Byers (Stranger Things), Rapunzel (Tangled), Jessie (Toy Story), Kimmy Schmidt (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Ottoki Otoya (Uta No Prince Sama), and Tara Chambler (The Walking Dead).
The Activist
The Activist ENFP is often first struck with Ne curiosity in the world and the ideas within it and then as they shape their Fi they rally behind a certain cause. The ENFP Activist is passionate about their cause. They may break the rules of society and systems, but they will never turn against their individual cause. Just like the Idealist, the ENFP activist often inspires others, however, they inspire those to follow them. ENFP activists can be very persuasive, living their life in line with their beliefs.
Examples: Hayley Smith (American Dad), Aang (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Karen Page (Netflix’s Daredevil), Marshall Eriksen (How I met Your Mother), Cindy Lou Who (Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas), Helen Parr (The Incredibles), Ray Palmer/Atom (DCTVU), Erik Lensherr/Magneto (Marvel Comics and X-MenCU), Mike Wheeler (Stranger Things), Sir Thomas More (The Tudors), Sam Seaborn (The West Wing), and Judy Hopps (Zootopia).
The Salesman
This ENFP character can convince you of anything and sell you on their vision. Whether they are healthy or not, their Ne makes them idea people that inspire, their Fi helps them appeal to people and their individual sense of self. They make you think that they can help make all your dreams come true. Healthy or unhealthy, their Te can help them make you think their idea is your priority, like they have your interests at heart (combined with Fi). This can help them actually help you or help them completely swindle you. No matter what they will make you for at least a moment feel special as they take you on a romantic journey of your dreams.
Examples: Katherine Pierce (The Vampire Diaries), Genie (Aladdin), Walt Disney (Saving Mr. Banks), Randy Marsh (South Park), Tom Haverford (Parks & Recreation), Erlich (Silicon Valley), Taco (The League), Tiffany Doggett (Orange is the New Black), Michael Scott (NBC’s The Office), Christian (Moulin Rouge!), John Hammond (Jurassic Park), Thomas Jefferson (Hamilton: An American Musical), Bumi (Avatar: The Legend of Korra), Gob Bluth (Arrested Development), and Malcolm Merlyn (Arrow).
The Prince
This is the darker side of the ENFP. They are probably the most self-involved trope. They believe their their wants are the needs of others. They demand others to serve their personal priorities. They often don’t see their work as selfish, but part of a greater cause or purpose. However, they are usually looping ENFPs. Many Prince ENFPs find themselves in leadership positions because they are over using their tertiary Te that they think is morally just because of their minimal use of their secondary Fi function. They use Te objectivity as a shield against their own subjective motives of Fi-Si. These types often have potential to be more positive tropes, but have faltered in their quest to satisfy their inferior function fears and desires.
Examples: Ice King (Adventure Time), Malcolm Merlyn (Arrow), Cheryl Tunt (Archer), The Master (Doctor Who-10th Doctor Era), King Richard, Jaime Lannister (Game of Thrones), Ronald Weasley (Harry Potter Series), Sean McGinnes (Hell on Wheels), Willis ‘Diamondback’ Stryker (Luke Cage), Julia (Syfy’s The Magicians), Erik Lensherr/Magneto (Marvel Comics/X-Men Cinematic Universe), Obito Uchiha (Naruto Shippuden), Peter Pan (Once Upon a Time), Marshal D. Teach “Blackbeard” (One Piece), Klaus Mikaelson (The Vampire Diaries/The Originals), and Catherine Earnshaw (Wuthering Heights).
The Champion Leader
ENFP leaders become so in their hope to help others. They are concerned with the forgotten because of their Introverted Feeling. They are a champion of a cause like the activist, but find themselves leading others in order to accomplish their goals. Their leadership style isn’t one of intense organization, but of individuality and independence. They are often because of Ne-Fi on the ground doing tasks with their followers in order to accomplish group goals. They have a hard time delegating, standing back and letting only others enjoy the fun of the action. This is due to their Ne being more present oriented and Fi being a function that can’t be used conceptually, but perceptually. The ENFP leader is far more comfortable helping others in the situation rather than apart from it.
Examples: Clark Kent/Superman (DC), Renly Baratheon (Game of Thrones), Chris (Bravest Warriors), Peter Quill (Guardians of the Galaxy), King Arthur (Mists of Avalon), Moana (Moana), Hashirama Senju (Naruto Shippuden), Peter Pan (Disney’s Peter Pan), Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece), Dr. Alexander Sweet (Penny Dreadful), Erik Lensherr/Magneto (Marvel/X-Men Cinematic Universe), and Captain Kirk (Star Trek).
The Goof
This is the most under-estimated ENFP character. They come off is aloof, odd, and carefree on the surface. But this is often a misread. The ENFP goof is often wandering the unbeaten Ne dominance path, seeing things differently in ways that other types can’t accept or don’t understand. Their sense of genius is mistaken for oddity. They usually surprise others with their intelligence and success, because it is never how others would go about completing a given task or goal. Their genius word play is often seen as simply humorous rather than an indicator of a deeper intelligence.
Examples: Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls), Second Doctor & Eleventh Doctor (Doctor Who), Troy Barnes (Community), Fez (That ‘70s Show), Gregory (Over the Garden Wall), Spongebob Squarepants (Spondgebob Squarepants), Bing Bong (Inside Out), Hugo ‘Hurley’ Reyes (LOST), Bert (Morry Poppins), Mei (My Neighbor Totoro), Winston Bishop (New Girl), Erin Hannon (NBC’s The Office), Russell (Up), Lorelai Gilmore (Gilmore Girls), Madam Mim (The Sword in the Stone), Gene Belcher (Bob’s Burgers), Scooby-Doo (Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?), Peter Quill (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Bolin (Avatar: The Legend of Korra).

teach me something new
“You’re a really good teacher,” Will told him one day.
They were twelve years old, sitting in the treehouse, math homework sprawled out in front of them. Lucas stopped from where he was writing down the steps of a problem for Will on a notecard and looked up at the other boy. Will was smiling at him in that genuine way of his, and it took Lucas a bit off guard.
“Really?” He asked before he could find another response. “Mike says I’m a shit teacher.”
“Mike’s a shitty student,” Will amended. “You’re a good teacher. You’re patient and you’re really good and breaking stuff down. It’s cool.”
Lucas felt his face heat up at the compliment, and he was grateful it didn’t show up as a blush. He ducked his head back down, returning to the problem so he didn’t have to look at his friend. “Thanks.”
“You should be a teacher when you grow up,” Will continued. Lucas blinked before frowning up at him.
“I’m gonna be in the army,” he reminded Will. “Like my dad, remember?”
“Well, okay,” Will said with a frown, like he wanted to argue but wasn’t sure how. “After the army then.”
Lucas shrugged. “Yeah, maybe.”
The thing is, Lucas was always going to join the army.
It was always a fact for him growing up, a decision he’d made so long ago he didn’t even remember making it. He remembered curling up on his dad’s lap as a young kid and tracing the scar on his dad’s stomach and listening to his dad tell him stories. He remembered the first time his dad had shown him the Purple Heart and the way that Lucas’ heart had swelled with pride at the sight of it.
He wanted his future son to feel the same pride in him that he’d always felt towards his dad. So the army was never a hard choice for him.
So Lucas didn’t know how to react when Will walked in on him teaching little Holly about how binoculars worked and brightened like Lucas had performed a miracle. Or when Will watched him carefully while he taught Max how to dance. Or later, when he tried to explain to El how computers worked when they were both rather drunk after getting into the Wheeler’s liquor cabinet and Will stared at him for the rest of the night with parted lips and bright eyes.
When he was teaching something, no matter what it was, Will looked at him like he was the world. Lucas didn’t know why, but he really didn’t want that to go away.
But he kept his eyes fixed firmly on the army, ignoring the twinges of anxiety and displeasure he began to feel as he got older and started really understanding the situation he was getting himself into. This was what he’d always wanted.
It was the July before their senior year when things really changed for Lucas. They were all squished onto the couches of the Wheeler’s basement, the unofficial meeting spot that they’d never allowed themselves to give up. They were in the process of getting up and racing up the stairs for dinner when Lucas accidentally kicked over his backpack and all of his homework and miscellaneous papers spilled out.
Lucas cursed loudly before bending down to pick it all up as the others continued to run. He was almost finished repacking it all when a dark brown and green pamphlet caught his eye. He stopped, picking up the brochure and staring at it with a slight frown. He sat back down, his back against the old couch as he stared at the men in the photo.
“Lucas?” Will asked from the doorway. Lucas hadn’t heard him come back, but he didn’t look up at him, staring instead at the ROTC pamphlet in his hand. He heard Will come back down the stairs and after a second he took a seat beside his friend. “What’s up?”
When Lucas didn’t reply, Will pushed a bit more. “Is it about the pamphlet?”
Lucas took a deep breath, not taking his eyes off of the men in the photos, standing proud and confident. “I don’t-- I don’t think I want to... anymore.”
He hadn’t ever admitted that to anyone. He knew that didn’t make sense. He could only hope that Will could understand without Lucas having to spell it out. He didn’t think he could say it out loud if his life depended on it.
“Oh,” Will answered. Lucas tried to listen for any surprise or judgment, but the word was free of both.
“I went to all of these meetings and talks with these people, and I just... I didn’t want it.” Lucas looked up at last, hoping he didn’t look as scared as he felt. Will stared back with wide eyes. He didn’t want to explain further. He didn’t want to talk about how terrified he’d gotten when thinking about the battalions and how he felt like he already had one, or the flashbacks he’d gotten immediately at the sight of the pistol on the hip of one of the officers.
“That makes sense,” Will said gently after a pause. “I mean, to be fair, you've already fought in your own wars. Just... different monsters.”
Lucas nodded, looking back down. It was easing to hear Will put it so simply, like maybe he wasn’t crazy for thinking this way. But there was still a thought bugging him in the back of his head.
“I just...” Lucas cut off in frustration. “I always thought I was gonna be like my dad.”
"You are like your dad,” Will disagreed, watching him carefully. “You’re always talking about how brave he is, and how strong, and how caring he is towards other people. You’re all of those things already.”
Lucas swallowed, glancing at Will. Will was blushing slightly-- he always did blush so easily-- but he eyes were determined and genuine. Lucas paused, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth.
“But I’m too scared to join the army,” Lucas confessed in a whisper, feeling shame creep through his veins like a sickness. “I’m too scared to fight again.”
Will paused, his eyes sad. After a second he reached out, interlacing their fingers together slowly. Lucas stared at their hands, starkly different in every way, and found a strange sense of comfort in the picture. “Lucas, you’re the bravest person I know.”
Lucas stared at him with wide eyes. He’d been told he was brave before, by his friends, by his parents, even by his teachers occasionally. But when Will said it, it meant something more. Probably because Lucas couldn’t even dream of being as brave as he knew Will Byers was.
Lucas sighed and leant against the back of the couch before tossing the pamphlet to the floor. “Well now what am I supposed to do? It’s not like I have any back up plans. I never needed them before.”
Will leaned back as well, pushing their shoulders together. Lucas looked over at him, surprised to see a smirk on Will’s lips. “You could always be a teacher.”
Lucas raised his eyebrows, smiling slightly. “Yeah, you think so?”
“Sure,” Will answered. He chuckled, raising his eyebrows. “‘Mr. Sinclair, the dashing algebra teacher’. I think it works.”
Lucas let a surprised laugh fall out of his lips. “Dashing?” He repeated with raised eyebrows. “You know, I’m no stranger to compliments, but I don’t think dashing--”
“Shut up,” Will laughed. “I’m trying to be supportive, you dick.”
Lucas snorted, his head falling to his chest. He allowed himself to relax, finally taking a deep breath. He wasn’t looking forward to telling his parents about his change in decisions, but at least he felt like he could breathe again.
When he looked up, Will was leaning against the couch, a tiny content smile playing on his lips as he stared up at the ceiling. Lucas felt his own lips pull into a smile as he looked at the smaller boy. Will was always the best at putting a smile onto Lucas’ face, and Lucas suddenly felt incredibly grateful for that.
He recognized suddenly that he hadn’t let go of Will’s hand from earlier. When he realized that, he couldn’t help but hold on a bit tighter, which caught Will’s attention, and he looked over with wide inquisitive eyes that made Lucas’ breath speed up.
What the hell, Lucas thought in a moment of stunning clarity. I can be brave.
Without waiting, he leaned forward quickly, pressing a gentle but intentional kiss on Will’s lips. They were soft, like Lucas expected them to be, but he was still surprised because he realized that he must’ve thought about this before. He’d thought about what it’d be like to kiss Will, which brought along its own set of realizations.
Will didn’t freeze or pull back. His free hand rested lightly on Lucas’ knee as he kissed back, and Lucas could feel the warmth even through the layer of his jeans.
After a long moment, they broke apart, drawing back to look at each other and read reactions. After what felt like eternity, Will smiled.
“I've never--” Will broke off, a nervous chuckle bubbling out of his throat. “I've never kissed anyone like that before.”
Lucas gave him a small excited smile, feeling his chest spark excitedly when he felt Will squeeze his hand tighter. “I guess I'll have to teach you then.”
