The Woman with the Pink Cat Mike Stilkey (2012) Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street (Taguig City, Philippines)
My Go To Free Place
Back in college, I used to go on dates in Bonifacio Global City (BGC)...
I would do the two (2) -hour bus and jeepney commute from Los Baños (Laguna) to BGC (Taguig City). I would always arrive earlier than my date, usually at least two (2) hours earlier. And it was financially challenging arriving at BGC ahead of your schedule. BGC is one of the most expensive cities in the country and I was on a middle class allowance. I couldn't afford to wait for my date in coffee shops or restaurants there.
So, I really thank God for that Fully Booked branch in Bonifacio High Street. That Fully Booked was more of a library rather than a bookstore. You can read the books they were selling and they had great seats all over the bookstore. My broke college ass would sit there and read as I wait for my dates.
Ang hirap ng buhay noon ah. Hahaha. Hahaha.
Again, thank you so much Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street.

«Books are dying. There are so many that go to the garbage. It’s crazy. If I can paint on them, I’m giving them a second chance.» — Mike Stilkey, via Los Angeles Times
Artist Mike Stilkey uses the covers of books reclaimed from library trash heaps as a canvas for his whimsical paintings. His artwork vary from anthropomorphic animals playing instruments to portraits of men and women inspired by Weimar-era German expressionism.
Mike Stilkey works with local libraries to give those books a second chance with his massive art installations. Stilkey arranges the faces and spines of books in groupings of varying size stacked together to tall towers that make public spaces look more interesting. With a combination of colored pencil, ink, paint, and lacquer, he then paints lively characters using the books as his canvas.
— Mike Stilkey, Los Angeles Times

Don’t toss your old books. Give them new life as art.
“I reuse books that have been discarded or that are going to be destroyed,” [artist Mike Stilkey] tells My Modern Met. “There are several local libraries that I work with who donate large numbers of books to me, as they know I will give them a second life in my artwork.”
It isn’t just books, however, that these libraries offer Stilkey; they are also where he finds his artistic inspiration. “I find inspiration in everyday life,” he says. “I also really enjoy going to the library. I will gather twenty to thirty books, bring them home and peruse them. I’m always looking for something to spark my imagination.”

Stilkey’s one-of-a-kind creations range in scale, materializing as both table-top arrangements and monumental installations. While he often experiments with size, he always employs the same subject matter: “a melancholic and at times a whimsical cast of characters inhabiting ambiguous spaces and narratives of fantasy and fairy tales.”
Artist Mike Stilkey’s stacked book sculptures are a definite sight to behold for book-lovers everywhere. Browse more of his intriguing book-art here.

Mike Stilkey takes books discarded by libraries and arranged their faces and spines of books into creating towering sculptures or wall-size murals. That way, these tomes get a second chance.
