MONTHLY MEDIA: August 2024
The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler. The summer is waning. But the monthly media posts carry on. Here's how I spent the month of August.
……….FILM……….
Wendell & Wild (2022) I don't want this to be one of the last major stop-motion film to ever be made, but the filmmakers put so many stories into this that I wonder if they thought this was their last shot. Essentially a 12-course meal from a great restaurant: the accomplishment is impressive but the whole is overstuffed and some of the smaller portions were undercooked.
Love Lies Bleeding (2024) The lightly surreal elements of the movie were great, but there's a point late in the story when that surreality kills all of the momentum.
Spice World (1997) Still holds up.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) Still amazed at how well this pulls off what it seeks to do. But maybe I'm biased because I love practical effects, puppets, and action scenes that serve the narrative. We may not get another D&D movie but I'm glad we have this one.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Based on other live-action multiverses, I went in with modest expectations, and this was a pleasant surprise. Maybe it's because it continues to do what Deadpool does well. Thoroughly entertaining in the moment.
……….TELEVISION……….
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Episode 1.14 to 1.20) It's been a couple of years since I stopped watching (mid season!) but luckily one of the episodes was essentially a recap of what's happened so far. Really ramping up in the abstract and the philosophical and I'm a big fan. These kids are meeeeeeeessed up.
Made for Love (Episode 2.01 to 2.08) I only really caught the first season in pieces but I knew enough going into this season that it really clicked! It hit me the same way early Black Mirror episodes felt, only with more humour, depth, and nuance. It's a real shame there's no plans for season 3.
……….YOUTUBE……….
I think this will be a Short Video by Matthew Colville A really great reflection on making art in the social age, the algorithm, communities/audiences, and how these can clash with the natural impulses of creativity. VIDEO
I'm What the Culture Feeling (The full story of Kendrick Vs. Drake) by F.D. Signifier Almost 3.5 hours but for someone like me (who knows next to nothing of this world, these artists, or this conflict) it expertly breaks it all down to paint a complete picture. Really great watch. VIDEO
……….READING……….
Cards On the Table by Agatha Christie (Complete) Top-tier Christie. The premise is so fun, and while I know the multiple detectives appear in other stories, it's a nice introduction to these characters. This book made me want to learn how to play Bridge.
The People of the Black Circle and A Witch Shall Be Born by Robert E. Howard (Complete) I have this collection of Conan stories and after a years-long break, decided to read a few more. Both great! The latter puts Conan in an almost supporting role and it's fun to see him take on a secondary role to the story. Keeps it interesting. And the former is such a classic pulp story (cults, magic clothing, a giant snake) that I can't help but love it.
Delicious in Dungeon Volume 14 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) It's been a 6-year-long journey for me and while I couldn't be happier with how it ended, I'm sad that it's over. Still so impressed with how well it stuck the landing for me. Do I wish there was more of a wind-down with these characters? Sure. But I really respect an artist who knows what they want to say/do and says/does it. Very excited to see what Ryoko does next.
Hellboy Library Volume 1 by Mike Mignola with John Byrne (Complete) Without being hyperbolic, this is one of my favourite contributions to the craft. So confident and fully-formed right out of the gate. Excited to reread this series.
……….AUDIO……….
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappel Roan (2023) Technically I started listening to this at the end of July. I saw a positive review, figured I'd check it out, and it felt like that was at the same time everyone else in the world was talking about her. Love an album with such a focused perspective.
Currents by Tame Impala (2015) In recent years I've been really enjoying Tame Impala's one-off songs (Barbie and Dungeons & Dragons soundtracks, their collaboration with Gorillaz, etc.) so I figured I'd really dig into this album. Easy to listen to both casually in the background and with a magnifying glass just pouring over the lyrics. Love it.
……….GAMING……….
Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) Only got a few sessions in this month but the crew is still reassembling the skeletal pirate they trashed years (real time) ago. Now they're about to face a big electric centipede to recover his legs.
Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Mof1 crew split the party and one half casually shopped and planned while the other half discovered a secret testing facility full of captured magic-users.
Wonderland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) We got in a single session of Wonderland and it was a small party but a lot of fun! Also the first true character death of our playtesters. Luckily we had backup characters though character 2 ended the session losing their arm. Hey that's Wonderland.
And that's it. See you in September!

I was wondering, do you by chance record speedpaints? Doesn't have to be for the comic specifically! Your style with these characters Is simply amazing, and I would just love to see how you go about the rendering and/or sketch processes! If not, is there any comic/illustrator that you take a lot of inspiration from with how you color?
Well, I wouldn't say I really do stuff like speed paints, BUT if you're interested in seeing how I do what I do, every first and last Sunday of the month is when I do comic-making streams for Headless and Ascended Ko-Fi members!
As for inspirations, I think I've listed those before but that ask is probably long buried, so to list some of em again:
Tracy Yardley (Archie/IDW Sonic Artist)
Diana Skelly (Archie/IDW Sonic Artist)
Tyson Hesse (Literally involved in basically everything Sonic these days but I knew him for his webcomic Boxer Hockey before anything else)
Tess Stone (Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name + Not Drunk Enough)
Glen Keane (Disney Renaissance Era Storyboard Artist + Character Designer creator of the "Disney style," designed The Beast)
Mike Mignola (Creator of Hellboy + More)
Jeff Smith (Creator of Bone)
Jeph Loeb (NOT an artist, WRITER of Spider-Man: Blue)
I am realizing only just now that you specifically said "how you color" and not in general.
And, well, in that case, I wouldn't necessarily say I am directly inspired by anyone's coloring, specifically, but I've been told by a professor of mine, regarding a lot of my older work, that I color a bit like Moebius (the cartoonist). That was my older work, however, and I don't think that applies to what I do now. I'm not very confident in how I color tbh, and a lot of what I do comes from watching how Loish paints + Trying to work backwards figuring out what other cartoonists I really like (like Evan Stanley) color their stuff.
I wouldn't say I color like Evan Stanley, however?
Hoo boy! Difficult question to properly answer!

listen,
Jack Kesy's Hellboy? It's good. I love it, I'm so hyped about it, and I'm counting down the days until release (Sept 27th!)* (*UK release!)
(opinion rambles below)
Kesy's a comic fan- he's read them. He understands the character, he loves Hellboy just as much as I do. I can't wait to see him bring Hellboy to life.
And the film? I think it's going to be fantastic. They've chosen a more manageable story to adapt to the screen instead of trying to squeeze his entire arc into >2 hours, and it's one of the more iconic ones in the comics- allegedly one of Mignola's favourites! Yeah, it's a horror movie- have you read Mignola's work? He doesn't fuck around when it comes to macabre concepts. I could argue that Hellboy fits comfortably in the horror genre.
There are clips from the trailer that are immediately recognizable as moments in the comics, and Hellboy's lines (the few we've been blessed with so far) are just so him, I dare say that my hopes are up for an adaptation that finally shows us who he really is.
No, this isn't a reboot, the director himself said as much:
"Whilst [the Del Toro] films are much beloved by fans, according to Crooked Man director Brian Taylor it's not exactly a true take on the character - and that's for both him and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. As Taylor tells Total Film [...]: "As cool as those other movies were, even Mignola will tell you it's not quite his character.""
And Mignola did!
"Mignola teases the upcoming film as “a much more grounded Hellboy movie and the most faithful adaptation of one of my stories.”"
How exciting is that!
I'm so sad to see this movie, which has such amazing potential and already looks fantastic, getting hate because it isn't Del Toro's Hellboy. As a comic Hellboy fan, I want to see my Hellboy on screen, and I don't want to see him getting hate because he's not fitting the standards of something he isn't.
I'm so, so excited for this, knowing that the director and the cast are making this with the comic fans in mind, and that Mike Mignola himself is working closely with them to give us something great.
#sorry about this ramble#i want some positive things about this movie out there damnit!#all im seeing is 'this sucks- its not Del Toro/Perlman's hellboy'#and like!! yeah!! its not!!#but that doesnt mean it sucks??#please let the comic fans have their movie#like lets be fr i have no desire to see fankids on the big screen#no thanks#hellboy#the crooked man#hellboy movie

What a lovely and enjoyable Hellboy yarn from Mike Mignola with great art from Matt Smith throughout.
A consistantly well written series which never disapoints. Its a shame that most of these are late these days etc.

The Global Occult Coalition was a Group of Interest created by Kain Pathos Crow in the early days of the SCP Foundation wiki. Inspired by a creepypasta about how the Soviet Red Army killed God in the 1950s, it postulated the existence of a separate, but equally powerful, force in the paranormal world. If the SCP Foundation was dedicated to finding, capturing, and containing paranormal objects, the Coalition would be dedicated to a much different, more direct approach: outright destruction of the paranormal.
Since then, the concept has been refined somewhat into the current iteration. The Global Occult Coalition is now intended to be an openly political organization, taking actions that affect the world stage. Seen in that light, their policy of destruction of paranormal objects differs from the SCP Foundation's: if the Foundation are the jailers, then the Coalition are the executioners. But, like any executioner, they cannot act without the permission of a judge and jury… the United Nations' secret Council of 108.
Global Occult Coalition stories take their inspiration from any number of fictional works about global conspiracies that secretly control the world (The Laundry Series by Charles Stross, Delta Green and Call of Cthulhu by Chaosium, the Illuminatus Trilogy, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, etc.), with a strong dose of Tom Clancy style modern-day action thriller. There is still a horror element, but the focus is no longer on the things that lurk in the darkness, but on the people who watch over us in the night.
