POSSIBLE EXHIBITIONS
solo exhibition
National Gallery / Sofia Arsenal - Museum of Contemporary art presents SVETLANA MIRCHEVA POSSIBLE EXHIBITIONS 2021 curator Nadezhda Dzhakova Works in the exhibition 13 large-scale drawings-memories (150 x 100 cm) 54 drawings-memories in frames (120 x 84 cm, 60 x 168 cm, 60 x 84 cm) 47 drawings in transparent folders (60 x 42 cm each) Sculpture Installation “Dimensions” (200 x 190 x 150 cm) Video, Making of, 28' Video Archive / 19+ Interviews “Possible Exhibitions” consists of a series of numbered drawings that reveal the spirit of Un Cabinet D’Amateur Gallery, which existed in Sofia from 2012 to 2017. The focus of the exhibition is on the works and artists presented in it: Bulgarian and French, united by innovative thinking, the vision and high standard of the gallery’s creator, Olivier Boissière. The project was made possible with the support of the Creative Initiatives Programme of the National Culture Fund. In 13 large-format and over 90 smaller drawings-memories, Svetlana Mircheva shares her memories of ideas, events, images, exhibitions, works, meetings with artists and working moments. Employing a fragmentary approach, signs and text, she revives individual moments, turning them into a visual archive of gallery life. The series of numbered drawings-memories began with the first drawing of the manifesto of Un Cabinet D’Amateur for Æther Art Space in Sofia in January 2019, when the main concept for the current exhibition was formed. The title comes from Svetlana Mircheva’s solo presentation “Possible Exhibitions” at the Nurture Art Gallery, New York, in 2012, and her previous research, in which the gallery was seen as a place for possible exhibitions. The 2021 “Possible Exhibitions” commences a more in-depth project relating to the study of the Wunderkammers around the world and other galleries working in a similar way. An integral part of the exhibition is represented by a series of interviews that will be conducted during its duration with anyone wishing to share, in a video conversation or through a short piece of text, their personal experiences related to Un Cabinet D’Amateur Gallery. Svetlana Mircheva graduated from the National Gallery of Arts in Sofia. She also attended Olafur Eliasson’s class at IUAV, Venice. In 2004, she was granted the International Media Art Award of ZKM, Karlsruhe, for her project ‘Mistakes’. She served as Art Director in the advertising agencies Ogilvy and Mather, Demner, Merlicek and Bergman and Carré Noir Sofia, and of Capital Light Magazine. In 2010, she was among the nominees for the BAZA Award and, in 2012, came her nomination for the Henkel Art Award for Eastern European Art. Mircheva was one of the curators of the 2012 Sofia Design Week. Un Cabinet D’Amateur Gallery has presented artists Lewis Baltz, Sophie Calle, Jean-Charles Blais, Kalin Serapionov, Stefan Nikolaev, Marie Maillard, Stela Vasileva, Svetlana Mircheva, Ivan Mudov, Kiril Prashkov, Alejandro Gehry, Tanya Glebova, Iskra Blagoeva, Dimitar Solakov, Misirkov/Bogdanov, Iskra Blagoeva/Mihail Novakov, and Stefania Batoeva, among others. The gallery hosted the series, ‘Meetings with Nedko’, between young artists and Nedko Solakov after his idea, and architectural presentations such as ‘For Architecture Lovers Only’ from the successful project, ‘Reinvent Paris’, by Sou Fujimoto and the Manal Rachdi OXO Architectes. Un Cabinet D’Amateur published the art books ‘Sechs Songs d’Amour’ by Jean-Charles Blais and ‘Look at Me, David!’ by Kalin Serapionov, as well as catalogues of the exhibitions of Marie Maillard, Kalin Serapionov, Stela Vasileva, and Svetlana Mircheva. Young Bulgarian architects, artists, art connoisseurs, are friends of the gallery. Artist makes neon female busts for a city with no monuments to women
The caption of the statue reads, "The first monument of a woman in Sofia"
Image: mihail novakov
There is not a single monument dedicated to a female historical figures in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.
Like most cities, Sofia is dotted with rusty monuments of warriors, political, religious and literary figures. They've become so ornamental, they are rarely noticed. Every single one of them is male. \_()_/
SEE ALSO: Women's mansplaining experiences will make you want to throw things
An impromptu artistic intervention is trying to address that.
Seven brightly coloured busts with female faces have been erected on temporary pedestals around the city in an attempt to break that stigma and start a conversation with a pop of colour.
Each bust is a self-portrait of artist Irina Tomova Erka
Image: Mihail novakov
The temporary installation is part of a campaign called "Monumental Women" by the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, in partnership with Fine Acts, and with the support of Tribal Worldwide Sofia.
"Monumental Women" is an initiative that seeks to change the perception that suggests only male figures can be immortalized through public monuments.
This installation wants to raise questions about the representation of gender in cities - especially from generations passed.
Svetla Baeva, Campaign Director at the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, says the lack of monuments celebrating women in the public space contributes to the stereotype that there are no women who have made worthwhile contributions to society.

Artist Irina Tomova-Erka, says she chose to publicly stand behind the initiative by using her own portrait on all the busts, as a symbol of countless other women in Sofia and Bulgaria.
The busts were secretly installed across the city in the early morning of March 22. Each bust has a plaque reading, "The first monument of a woman in Sofia."

The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee reckons the busts have already had an impact.
It says passers are interacting with the statues and appear shocked to learn that there are no monuments dedicated to female individuals in the city.
Others didn't really appreciate the sentiment, suggesting that busts of national heroes should be prioritized before busts of women.

But it's important to question the physical make up of your surroundings.
Think about where you live what monument springs to mind? Think about all the other male-centered pieces of city life that go unnoticed. Like, for example, sexist pedestrian traffic lights.

The organizers of the installation in Sofia have now called upon local authorities to create a plan to construct permanent monuments of women figures from Bulgarian history by 2018.

The opening exhibition of the Structura Gallery is a conversation about the personal and the shared, about the close and the distant, and about that natural yet unattainable compatibility, which determines our existence at every moment. What follows the collapse of the grand utopias of multiculturalism? Has its demise affected our own relationship with the world? Innocence has been lost, dethroned by cynicism. The once ambitious mega-project has morphed into a multi-culti fashion label that is hardly more than an exotic brooch, in our everyday lives.

ДУХ II (2024)
Mask from the series SPIRIT II (ДУХ) - part of the BEAST exhibition at KO-OP gallery, Sofia.
The masks idea came along with the development of the other pieces for the show. I wanted them to make for an interactive piece where visitors could turn into the "BEAST" and see the world through his eyes.
Technical details: Merino wool, 100% natural wool pom-poms, rib netting, pearls, spray glue, cotton fabric and thread, size: 96 cm x 81 cm.

PREMIERE: OOHS! - Tropic Of Cancel
OOHS!’s debut EP landed in our inbox at the perfect time. MusicMap.Global was happy to have its warm tones emanating from the speakers to compensate for the frosty bite outside.
Coming out on AMEK, the Sofia-based collective we interviewed for an Insight post earlier in 2017, ‘Tropic of Cancel’ is a selection of lo-fi bliss. Retro synth bubbles pop around sliding, country-tinged guitars and harmonious and restrained vocals.
Of course we were more than happy to say yes to giving the release a premiere, and also talk to the Bulgarian-Lebanese duo who make up OOHS! – Maxim Mokdad and Margg Names – about what they describe as music that represents “heat-induced illusion”. Now we await the snow-induced sequel…
Tropic Of Cancel by OOHS!
How did you two meet?
Margg: I don’t recall when or how we were introduced, but I remember seeing Maxim perform in some clubs downtown, back in 2010, and he seemed cool and really into music. I’m glad that our paths crossed some years later, only to find out that he was just as passionate about music as I’d thought he’d be.
Maxim: The first time we met proper, as far as I remember, was when I got in touch with Margg to get a copy of the new record that he’d just released with 1000 Names, which is his main gig. I loved his music, and so he was top of my wish list of collaborators, for quite some time. I’m quite happy that I finally got the nerve to ask him to do a gig with me, last year, and things just clicked into place, right away.
This is your first release as OOHS!, but have either of you been involved in musical projects before?
Margg: Yes. As Maxim already mentioned, I’m also one half of 1000 Names. We are a producer/DJ duo, and we have released a number of beat records on quite a few labels, such as Eklektik Records, Black Acre, Project: Mooncircle.
Maxim: This is actually my first musical project, as such. Back in the noughties I got roped in by some friends of mine who were in this amazing band (big up The Paperbax!) to do a few numbers at some of their gigs. We ended up mostly doing fuzzed-out covers of Spacemen 3, The Velvet Underground and such. That got the ball rolling, and soon I was doing solo folk gigs, and amassing a backlog of songs, mostly to fill out my set, but also with the intention of putting a record out at some later point. Work and travel put paid to that, and my music was on the back burner for the best part of a decade. But a couple of years ago that itch just came back… and here we are.
You work with samples and drum machines – what kit do you use and where do you source your sample from?
Maxim: To be honest our set-up is pretty primitive, and very much hardware based. I’m a bit old fashioned that way. Our synths don’t even have MIDI capabilities, as they are close to my age.
In terms of rhythms, we kept things very simple for ‘Tropic Of Cancel’. The backbone of most of the tracks are patterns we sampled off this ’70s preset drum machine I got a few years back. We only pulled out the TR-626 for Supersonic Satellite, because we used it to trigger the VCF on the Juno-60, and for the 4/4 drum pattern – and that’s pretty much the whole song, right there. Everything you hear on this record, bar the obvious samples of sea waves and the car taking off, are sounds that we have played. So, in a way, we mostly sample ourselves.
A lot of the songs are based on sketches that we’ve recorded on the go. I usually have an SP-404 set-up on my desk, to try and record things that pop into my mind whilst tinkering, late at night, with synths or alternate tunings on the guitar. Occasionally, a song will just appear fully formed, music, lyrics and all, but I tend to find it more rewarding to build songs up from these disjointed, rambling fragments. It often feels like trying to construct a narrative form random entries in a dream diary.
We also made a conscious decision to keep our live setup as hands-on and in the moment as possible. It’s usually myself on guitar and vocals, and Margg on the Juno and a Moog oscillator, for pure noise making. The samples are mostly restricted to repetitive patterns, hence our obsession with motorik beats.
When we talked to Angel [Simitchiev, AMEK Collective] we focused a lot on the drone/electronic side of things in Sofia, but how is the indie/psych scene in the city?
Margg: I’m not very familiar with that scene, as I’ve been mostly involved in electronic music, but I certainly am curious to find out more. Me and Maxim tend to frequent concerts organised by promoters such as Alarma Punk Jazz, Blood Becomes Water, and, of course, Amek, who are restless in their support of under-the-radar local and international artists, and have an impeccable taste in music.
Maxim: OOHS! is very much a homegrown entity and we’ve only played a handful of gigs so far, so we’re hardly part of the scene. Still, there do seem to be more and more guitar bands around these days that are doing the psychedelic thing, mostly on the garage/drone end of the spectrum. Comasummer are a band worth checking out, in that respect.
It seems to me that the more exciting sounds are being created on the fringes of the scene, away from the four-square guitar indie doldrums, be it in the post-hardcore, noise/drone, experimental hip-hop, vaporwave or straight-up doom genres. Artists are connecting and collaborating across genres (genders?), based on a mutual appreciation of integrity, individuality and sheer bloody-mindedness.
