This work is a part of my Hyrule Historian AU, for more information, check out my masterlist.

A/N: This post in particular was inspired by @orcusnoir and their weird chain headcanons. I wanted to take my own spin on the topic and include some weird headcanons for the historian! reader.

Secrets ran just as swiftly as blood through the veins of the chain. Little did they know that the historian joining their group also had their fair share of secrets that they kept hidden under lock and key as well.

The Hero of the Wild is starting to remember his past life more than he likes to let on. He doesn't want to be held to the same standard as the version of him from the past, he doesn't think he could ever go back to being like that, not after he got a taste of the freedom that adventure brings with it.

The Hero of Time can tell the moon's phase even during the brightest part of the day when the sun is at its peak. This effect remains the same even if the chain has recently changed eras. He is extremely anxious the first time they end up in Wild's Hyrule, he can sense the blood moon even if it is weeks away. He can sense the great dread and power that comes along with it, and it suffocates him.

The Hero of Legend can sense when magic courses its way through an object even from a considerable distance. He can feel the spirits that have attached themselves to many of the masks that the others carry with them. Their voices whisper to him in his dreams.

The Hero of Wind can always tell which direction the nearest body of water is. This skill comes in handy when finding a good spot to set up camp.

The Hero of Twilight sees figures in mirrors, and he knows no one else can see them. They drive him nuts and plague his nightmares. He hopes that one day one of the figures will be her, but he doesn't think he'll remain sane enough to see the day that happens.

The Hero of the Sky can understand the songs the birds sing, and the horror stories that pass through their beaks. This ability is why Sky likes to sleep in, past when early morning chirping from the local birds has ceased.

The Hero of Warriors can tell the second something dies. He has faced so much loss on the battlefield, that he knows the second a heart stops beating, this also applies to the hearts of enemies.

The Hero of Hyrule always knows what direction the nearest town or settlement is in, it doesn't matter if the chain is in his Hyrule or not. His feet will always lead him back to the people he has sworn to protect.

The Hero of the Four Sword can tell when people mask their personalities from others. The colors are quick to point out how a person is holding their true selves back. Being near the chain can be overwhelming because of this phenomenon. Being a hero of courage often lends itself to self-concealment for the greater good, or at least that's what they all try to claim. In reality, masking one's personality also works wonders at masking one's sins.

The Historian knows things they should have no logical way of knowing, things that the history books never recorded, things that happened thousands of years before their time. They know things people have never even spoken out loud, but somehow they still know. They understand the heroes they travel with because of this ability, and frequently have to stop themselves from spilling secrets that do not belong to them.

The Historian can hear the whispers of the shadows, which makes sneaking up on them almost impossible. The shadows are quick to warn them of the impending danger and who is coming, even if that danger is really just a squirrel or even one of the members of the chain. Because of this ability, sleep does not come easy. The historian often stays up late, feeling the eyes of the forest against their skin.

It was a beautiful summery day when you had decided that you had started talking to your friends about if you should confess your feelings to the most popular guy at school, Satoru Gojo. All your friends had told you not to fall for him because he was a player and would probably and let's be honest would most likely either reject you in the worst way possible or play with your feelings, but did you listen? No.

The thought of falling for Gojo hadn't actually crossed your mind at the start of the year, you even quite disliked him but suddenly halfway through the year you had realized that you indeed had a crush on him. At first you kept quiet and decided to not tell your friends but knowing them they caught on quick and figured it out, giving you shit about it all up until now. All of them had said multiple times that if you were to at least fall for someone, fall for his best friend, Geto, because at least if he rejected you, he would let you don't softly, but alas you didn't listen as your heart was set on Gojo through and through.

So you called up your best friend and asked her if she could help you with your confession, asking questions like: "how should I do it?" "Do you think he likes me back?" "What do I say?" Stuff like that until you had decided on simply catching him whenever and pulling him to the side and confessing your feelings.

It was the next day and you had woken up feeling excited, enough for your parents to mentally question why their daughter had a pep in her step, like you had physically skipped down the stairs to breakfast.

You had walked into school feeling excited but nervous as ever, you just hoped you wouldn't get rejected. Finding your friends near their lockers you greeted him.

"Hey guys!" You said sheepishly. Everyone had said hi back before one of your friends asked. "Are you going to confess today?" In a sort of joking manor, almost like she doesn't believe you will do it (she doesn't but you don't need to know that.) "Y-yea I am" you replied shyly looking up at her, "I'm gonna try catching him at lunch". As you said that, all of your friends gave each other a look and wished you luck as the bell rang and you made your way to your first class.

As time went on you started to get more nervous, tapping your foot on the ground, clicking your pen annoying the living daylights out of your teachers and trying to doodle to take your mind off of things. You had left your class as slow as you could before leaving and going to find your friends first to gather some courage. After you had found your friends and dropped off your bag, you trotted off to find your crush.

When you eventually found him hanging outside near the courts with his friend Geto you stood there for a moment second guessing whether you should go and confess. Then the thought of if you finally decide to confess, he MIGHT just accept your confession and you could live the happy relationship life you wanted, so you gathered up all the courage you could and walked over as confidently as you could.

Eventually he noticed you walking over and as a smirk spread across his face, you started to get nervous when Geto turned to look at you. It must have been obvious what you were about to do because a look of pity spread across Geto's face and your confident facade faltered a little.

"H-hi!" You said nervously, your heart thumping in your chest. "Hey" Gojo had replied in that playful way that would make you go jelly. "What's up?" He asked. You didn't respond for a moment before replying with : "Can I talk to you?....Alone?"

".."

'wow that came out more awkward than I thought' you said to yourself as Geto and Gojo shared a look.

"Okay...." He said slowly before he started to walk in the opposite direction motioning for you to follow. You and Geto exchange awkward smiles as you walk past him and hurry to catch up with the blue eyed male. Once he had stopped and you awkwardly stood in front of you he asked you what you wanted to say.

Tucking a strand behind your ear shyly you look up at him from under your lashes and start to talk.

"I-I like you Gojo-kun.."

Silence.

Mentally cursing yourself you wonder why you stuttered in front of him. You think of simply telling him not to bother with answering and just run away when suddenly he says something.

"....What?"

You wince before stating again that you like him, stuttering even more. You thought that his silence and him saying "what" meant that he was going to confess back but imagine your horror when you start to hear the sound of laughter roaring out from the person in front of you. Your heart drops to the pits of your stomach as you look around in horror to find almost everyone in the near vicinity staring at you guys. As his laughter starts to subside you start to hear those dreaded words.

"You like me? What type of idiot do you take me for to like you??"

You said nothing as tears welled up in your eyes and people around you start to whisper and chatter as he wasn't exactly quiet about it.

"o-oh-....my bad then, I'm sorry" you say before turning around to find Geto coming over with a frown on his face. You speed walk past as you hear him start to scold Gojo for rejecting you the way he did. Your tears were now rolling down your face like you had been slapped while you quickly tried to find your friends. Word of your rejection must have spread around the school fast because everyone in the halls were whispering and staring making you feel even worse.

You eventually found your friends and simply grabbed your bag and left, you didn't care for what your friends were saying in that moment.

the most you'll get out of him is a dark green sweater with some white designs on it but even that's asking for a lot

in his opinion he sees no point to the tradition and he thinks the sweaters are uncomfortable anyways

he absolutely refuses to wear anything that has any sort of lights or knick knacks sewn on to it

sorta a grinch when it comes to christmas sweaters ngl

john "soap" mactavish

soap loves wearing ugly christmas sweaters

every year he tries to buy the most obnoxious one he can find

i'm talking lights, tinsel, ornaments, the whole shebang

one time he even found one that said random christmas phrases whenever you moved

everyone was fighting the urge to slap him by the end of the night

he'll also wear them for as long as possible

so he has like twenty in his closet and he'll wear a different one each day

he never repeats though so he only starts like twenty days before christmas

so technically he would have started on 12/5 but whatever

kyle "gaz" garrick:

kyle's a fan of ugly christmas sweaters but he doesn't really go for the obnoxious ones like soap

also he only has one that he wears

he made it with his family last time he was able to spend christmas with them

they had a whole day dedicated to it and everything

it's one of gaz's favorite traditions

he even brought it to the 141 for them to do

it was actually a big hit

his sweater is usually more toned down

but it has his name on it and is custom designed so it makes it more special

john price:

price actually really enjoys wearing ugly christmas sweaters

he always does a little dad chuckle whenever he sees what sweater soap is wearing

he has a few sweaters in circulation in his closet

most of them are toned down like gaz's but he has like one pretty exorbitant one

one thing about price tho is that he won't let you guys wear the sweaters to training if they have anything attached to it

but if it's something like ghost's where it's just patterns then your fine

alejandro vargas

tbh i don't really see alejandro as the kind of guy to wear ugly christmas sweaters

he might wear normal christmas sweaters but not ugly ones

idk it's not like he's being a grinch about it or anything

but i just don't think it was something he grew up with

so he doesn't really see the point of doing it as an adult

he'll always make one with gaz and the rest of the team tho

and he'll wear it for like that night and then never again

but he always has fond memories of it

rodolfo "rudy" parra:

alright it shouldn't surprise anyone that rudy loves christmas sweaters

he tends to opt for the cute ones rather than the obnoxious ones tho

so he doesn't really like having things attached to his sweaters

he likes cute designs and prints

he also goes hard during gaz's sweater making days

like he will make a bunch of matching sweaters for everyone

he also has a lot of sweaters

but unlike soap he starts off the month super duper lowkey

to the point where you really don't realize he's been wearing christmas sweaters until like the second week of december

bc that's when he starts wearing prints of like christmas trees or rudolph

and yes he has a special connection to rudolph because of the name

IRLvFRA thoughts/ramblings

i posted some preliminary thoughts on twt but i'm back now so i can finally write up a longer post. so here's my thoughts on attending the match that no one asked for 🤗

i was sitting in a random section on the home side surrounded by irish fans so that impacted my experience a lot. the first thing i noticed. mbappe was getting IMMENSELY booed by the crowd. from when his name was announced in the starting lineup to pretty much every single time he touched the ball. literally boos as far as the ear could hear. it actually quite shocked me bc i've never attended a match in person before, i knew fans could get passionate but not to this level??!!?! anyway i felt really bad for him ngl mfbckdhskdh, griezmann was getting some boos too but it was nowhere near as vocal anyway thats why i dont blame mbappe for ghosting like half the game

i did have a decent seat but it was still pretty hard to see all the players esp on the far half so i didn't get an amazing view of pavard's goal or the celebration ☹️ but aaa looking at the closeup pictures and them all being happy makes me happy... that i was there in some form....

i straight up thought giroud was gonna die like 3 times during the match i was so scared for him omfg. he went down once quite early i think if i remember correctly? or he got stepped on or something or maybe both happened i dont even know bro. but when he went down and didnt immediately get back up I WAS LIKE ...... GIRL I CANT SEE (i think he was the far end of the pitch) IS HE OKAY OR WHAT. and then i saw him holding his knee on the big screen and i was like fuck shit fuck. but he got up so it was ok. but he was kinda limping for a while so it wasn't really ok. AND THEN LATER the second half probably when the ball was stopped for a second he like stood there and rested his hands on his knees (idk how to describe this position but hopefully you know what i mean) and gestured to the referee not to continue play AND I WAS LIKE ???????? IS HE FUCKING DYING cuz it looked like his legs might have been cramping or something idk he wasn't moving very well i was so scared he was gonna have to get subbed off early 😭 and by early i mean earlier than usual but he still ended up being able to play 60 minutes even if i felt like he was struggling towards the end so i guess it's ok... maybe maybe not........

and yes the attacking issues were just as frustrating in person. there were so many times i just shook my head and sighed because the players up there weren't connecting well enough... giroud was barely being serviced for most of it bc people weren't crossing inwards... literally felt like i was watching milan play 💀 but whatever we won so it doesnt matter(?)

towards the end tho the irish fans somehow managed to get Even Louder after a series of ref decisions (or non-decisions) and the close attempts at goal at the end omfg..... it was very electrifying all in all. i do kinda wish i could've sat in the section dedicated for french fans so i maybe could have actually cheered and stuff (was kinda scared i'd get like hatecrimed or something if i vocally rooted for france right in the middle of all the irish HAHAHA) but it is what it is :>

so FIRST with the eevee backpack, I thought it would have been soo amazing if there was a normal type eeveelution just called eeveeon (not my original idea, someone posted this I will go find the post)

I desperately want to see the other eeveelutions and in my bones I feel that they exist already like tPCI has them like locked up in a super secret vault and refuses to release them.

And I feel that Paldea would have been a splendid environment for most of the unreleased eeveelutions.

I do have one in particular that I care way too much about how it could be revealed and oddly enough it is not one of my most favourite types so if you know me and you're thinking bug or flying or steel you may be surprised (like lbr iwant those too, but. differently). the one I care the most about is a poison type eeveelution. and I know with the MPM sendoff series seems to say goodbye to Team Rocket not just to Ash and so my dear treasured hc will never ever happen but. here it is.

I want the first ever poison-type eeveelution to happen because of Jessie. I think it might have to be its own post but yeah. the first ever poison-type eeveelution should evolve because of Jessie.

But tbh soo many of the unreleased eeveelutions would just. make SENSE in Paldea (mild spoilers if you haven't played the game) but the many areas with the ruins would be perfect places to encounter a ghost-type, the many caves would be ideal for either rock-types or ground-types (depending on how deep into the cave you went maybe?) if you went to all the sights of Paldea in order and then went to the tallest peak and you had an eevee as the lead in your party the whole time you could encounter a flying-type or something. after your second battle with Katy you could have gone down into her bakery and met her bug-type eeveelution who is her bakery buddy who Does Not Battle because it is a sweetie who just naps in her bakery all day. just. aahhggg. soo many missed opportunities I feel. and I'm still grumpy about it.

It's not the worst loss of the game of course, I am still really mad on behalf of everyone who worked on that game and who poured so much love and dedication into it only to have crunch culture and a waayy too early released date effectively destroy everything that they were trying to accomplish.

okay i did a LOT more running around and i LOVE the stable quests and how they give us a little glimpse into zelda's life post-botw. like yeah she WAS working on a botanical garden (with MAGDA no less). she WOULD help make a new sheep feed she WOULD take an interest in a rare new type of animal. i love all of these she's a princess and that means taking care of her people, rebuilding and also doing so specifically by supporting and contributing to scientific development.

the stable trotters are really cute ^_^ their names being puns too, and i appreciate their dedication to the fairies.

the golden horse quest... that one gave me pause. most of these are resolved by weird rumors but this one is ominous and doesnt really leave us with a real answer.

!!! okay yona is gorgeous. i love character designs that break the mold and her little headpiece is so pretty. i wonder what her powers are? tulin and revali were pretty similar but there are other ways to do water powers than healing... but i do want some kind of healing ability from SOMEONE... that she's from another domain kicks off SO MANY other questions... there are other zora domains??? like in other countries??? or is it a freshwater vs oceanic evolutionary schism (that would explain why one of mipha's champion trials is just swimming fast)? do the zora have active political ties outside hyrule? does muzu have heritage from yona's domain as well since theyre both stingray zora?

...wait shes sidon's fiance?? LMAO

hmm she IS a healer... i hope we get more from her than Replacement MiphaTM she deserves better.

i love the healing cave i always figured it would be a missed opportunity to not make the mountains surrounding the domain like, hollow in places and have a whole second city layer there. they couldve added a diving function but i guess totk is already pretty heavy on the new game functions.

speaking of i think i might be warming up to the fuse function a bit. its still meh though- i actually LOVED weapons durability but its way more tedious now that i have to make them. but the gemstone magic function is cool.

king dorephan was injured by the muck-like which... yeah i think retirement is the best option for you there. relatively its the size of a rotisserie chicken to you. it cant even REACH your gills. but it looks like SIDON is the zora game representative which is massively disappointing. i didnt even use his ability i had an opal rod i stole from a bokoblin.

good on yona for getting sidon off his ass but like... why is she here... his thing is he's holding back because he's scared that taking action will make him lose someone he cares about. yeah thats a decent continuation from what we know of him from botw. what happened to his sister was horrible and she was avenged eventually but this is a whole new threat. but if he needs someone he cares about in danger... he already has that.

his people are sick his father is dying of it. make it so he's scared to leave his father in case he dies while sidon is away. yona isnt really necessary and i hate it. she deserves better we went from teba to tulin i thought we were getting more new adventuring buddies. if teba is too busy as chief then sidon should focus on purifying the water and being a prince while link and yona kick ass.

sorry to sidon fans but he continues to be largely useless pretty much throughout the whole temple- including the boss fight.

i LOVE the muckrock- it was a super fun boss and i love the sharky bit but after colgera... muckrock has more personality but it feels like a silly early game boss from other games and it kind of tips a bias toward the zora as the easy starter town. colgera had me in awe but the pattern to it was dead easy- but that might be on me for fighting it first so the combat meter hadnt amped up yet.

hmm i hope they dont give us the imprisoning war rundown every time. i kind of. dont really care. we dont get to know the sages of old like we did the champions and we arent supposed to. we dont see their faces or learn their names all we know is that they made the modern hyrule alliance of rito-zora-goron-gerudo-hylian. and rauru. oh and that theyre ancestors to the new champions which. eh.

it makes sense with the royalty and even to some degree ~people with strong magical abilities~ but i dont like it for the rito. i never digged teba being a blood relation of revali- i figured rito village is more communally-minded, inheritance of a legacy being tied less to blood and more willingness and ability to take it on. that was what teba was all about. he admired revali and appreciated his legacy but he didnt care about chosen heroes or goddess quests he was doing what needed to be done. all of the other calamity champions were related to or ancestors of the new ones so that makes sense- but also given teba's own efforts toward revali's gale and the wind sage's similar appearance to him why wasnt he able to?

(the answer is that the line of inheritance actually came throught saki and teba is the chief and she's their current historian and spiritual leader)

lmao two in one coronation and wedding has the end result of really feeling like neither i guess. i could treat you better girl. leave the prince, you dont need him.

i think if they made yona the new zora representative then she would risk sliding even further into being Spunky Mipha but i dunno at least that way she would be doing so in a way that gives her the spotlight thats she deserves as a new profile character. it would even give sidon a legit reason to hesitate to take action if it were about her actually doing stuff rather than her... leaving the house. its just a huge missed opportunity. also if im being petty looking at our current gender ratio... its just riju. one woman allowed :/

this feels a bit more negative so i'll leave off with after the zora i ran to lurelin and!!! the besties DDD: !!! i stealthed the monster raid- its really an interesting new combat mode but very stressful for me but i did it! and then immediately gave bolson twelve palm trunks when he wanted normal trees. and then we rebuilt lurelin together overnight ^_^

it was so good to see kiana and her family again- she was the first npc to personally teach me a real recipe so im pretty fond of her and it was nice to see that lurelin wasnt left behind in the realm of hylian development

this atmosphere is NUTS and the murals....

this tutorial is too damn long. ppl said the same about the botw tutorial and frankly that was bullshit but. the sky island is four times the size of the great plateau AND you cant track a full circle around it. rauru is cool though he seems too... normal for a ghost.

amber's playthrough -

amber's more of an outdoorsy type of person but that doesn't stop her from streaming!

she likes doing camping streams where she just camps out in her backyard and shows her chat what she would normally do. and the occasional cooking stream to show how you can make good foods healthy <33

she has a little bunny that she shows on stream sometimes :))

there'll be some days where she just sits at home talking to chat about her day while playing with her little baron bunny.

she plays games occasionally, but their mainly adventure type ones that mimic the lifestyle she holds.

like minecraft, rust, any survival game really.

she's still very energetic so any stream of hers is just bustling with excitement.

she'd probably host some streams where she teaches basic survival techniques?? idk man i don't go out much AIHSDASHLDKJ--

anyway anyway, she got a bunch of requests asking her to play genshin ofc.

and then she gets to try out your elemental skill and it's the aNIMAL THAT YOUR CHARACTER'S HEADBAND IS BASED OFF OF!!!

if it's a bunny she would definitely find a matching headband she can wear when she plays :00

so chae hyunmi aka halle, ulsan born, raised in seoul and relocated to toronto, canada with her parents, little sis and partner — aka sho — to train bc..

she’s a figure skater, good enough to win ( .. junior ig ) titles when she was in her early teens, so it was only inevitable for her to leave for toronto to train with the Best eventually

she’s competed in international competitions, as part of a pair, and made her olympic debut in sochi by the skin of her teeth; hers and sho’s highest placement was third place ( not at sochi pls sgjkld they prob ranked in the top ten at best ), so she’s got a medal or two to her name

ultimately it was after sochi that she saw her coach and ( ex ) partner intervene with her.. unhealthy practicing habits

she’s a perfectionist through and through, so of course she’d spend hours on the ice at just seventeen/eighteen years old, even younger tbh, to get a routine right. but she pushed herself harder and harder, where small missteps would lead her to fall hard and recover for days on end, even spraining her ankle just before competition season was to begin

so when her coach insisted she take a break, her parents following suit, it was with good reason — one that she didn’t fucking see fsdkgkl

even so, them pushing her to prioritize education for a bit, to get ahead of the skaters who would prob only be able to do so upon retirement in a good few years’ time, and hanging up her skates until she saw it as.. less than something she needed to abuse herself to feel comfortable with, for as long as they would do so led to her resolve shattering and her applying for universities both in canada and sk ( the sly brat reasoned that it’d be nice to be reconnect with her roots.. for the sake of having something going for her beyond just competing in pyeongchang ! )

which is how, miraculously, she got accepted into uni in seoul ( still figuring out which, rip ). her grades were good, she had a super brief volunteering stint and she’s a rising star ( well, was.. the bitch wouldn’t be competing again anytime soon to keep herself where she was within the skating circuit ) in her favoured sport, she deemed it inevitable sfkljfdgk

the transition wasn’t too hard ofc; she got comfortable with the campus and seoul and was back on the ice in no time, joining the uni’s skating team under her parents’ noses and making the most of it as comeback/olympics prep

she saw herself as poised to be added to the roster once again, now a singles prospect after a major falling out with her longtime partner for one too many dumb bitch moves, and was desperate for it since it’s in pyeongchang, however the stars didn’t align when she just missed obtaining qualification on sk’s roster on a technicality, and nothing could’ve compared to the agony that was missing her chance in something she invested sm practice, time and compliance with the people around her to pull through and get to pyeongchang

she’s still distraught over it, it’s been a few months since that happened and she gets emo real quick, misty-eyed if you bring it up ( she uh, has issues with moving on from things if you can’t tell )

suffice to say she resents her coach for his minor contribution in fucking her and himself over, dropped him out of anger ( a move she.. does feels bad abt on a personal level but professionally ?? pft ) and linked up with one back in toronto who she began seeing when she was “ prepared ” to give it a shot again.. so right after graduating

wrapped up a season dedicated solely to training ( meaning she’s currently on hiatus from the sport, but she knows a good few people think her career is Over now — and it pisses her the Fuck off ) before her sister convinced her to have a proper break that wasn’t Just to appease someone else

Midnight Sun Review, Chapter 1: First Sight (Why am I doing this?)

Hello people and welcome to my side blog specifically dedicated to my thoughts, feeling and opinions on Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer. It’s not like I have anything better to do at the moment (studying for exams, a semester to prepare for, friendships to cultivate) so let’s get to it!

Before I get started on informing you of said thoughts, feelings and opinions, here are a few disclaimers and other things you should probably know to follow my thought process and that will likely have an influence both on my reading experience and view of this book. For my inspiration for this undertaking, you all can thank both Hannah Lee Kidder for her excellent rewrites of the first book on YouTube (she is awesome, go check her out) and Strange Aeons for her video review of Midnight Sun, which I would also highly recommend.

When I heard that Stephenie Meyer (from now on referred to as SM, yes) finally was going to publish this mysterious thing that was circulating when I was barely a teenager and just starting my Twilight phase, and still seriously interested in the books, I was both over the moon and very apprehensive. And I knew immediately that I was going to buy and read it, no matter how bad or good it was going to be.

This YA fiction series was a huge part of my early formative years. At the time when I first read it, I was still too young to thoroughly grasp some of the more problematic concepts of the story, which has since changed. It got me into vampires, to an obsessive and, frankly, unhealthy amount. I subsequently read literature that was NOT for the eyes of a thirteen-year-old at the time and at the same time much worse fanfiction.

Another probably important thing is that I did not read the original Twilight series in English, but rather in German, which means that some things I may remember differently due to translation. I included this because the way Germans translate English in books is atrocious. I have never re-read the books after I read them for the first time, only watched the movies a couple of times since, mostly to make fun of them, this time in English. When the fourth movie came out, I was already mostly over Twilight again and just went to the theatre with my best friend for the hell of it. The only characters I was invested in at this point were the side characters, like Jasper, Rosalie, Leah Clearwater and, basically, anyone and everyone that wasn’t Edward, Bella and Jacob (mostly because everyone else had a much more compelling storyline). So please bear that in mind when I rip into this book. I will also probably be biased in favour of these characters.

This brings me to my last but probably the most important point: I had no interest in Edward and Bella and mostly wanted to know what kind of mess they ended up in this time. I made fun of them a lot. The older I got, the more of the unhealthy tendencies I recognized. So, this is my official warning for everyone who is genuinely interested in this book and wants to read it for fun and came across this post by accident: It will not be nice. I will probably not be kind. I like sarcasm and am not afraid to utilize it to get across exactly how dumb, deranged or practically pointless I think something is. I like to think I can give credit where it is due, but this is probably not the blog or post for you.

I will include trigger warnings if necessary, but if I miss anything please do not hesitate to let me know and/or stop reading immediately if it makes you uncomfortable. I am open to discussion and criticism, but please remain civil. And now that introduction has gone on for far too long, so please enjoy.

Chapter Summary: What happened?

We start with Edward in class having an existential crisis which seems to be his default state. He comments on his siblings, reducing them to absolute tropes which anyone who has read the original series later knows is not at all what and/or who they are. Practically anyone is more interesting than him, though that is not a high bar. Then we have lunch period (still wild you have that) where everyone else is thinking of the new girl who is still nothing amazing to him. Edward spews some vapid comments about everyone else in school (the word “children” comes to mind and is frequently used) and is very amused that particularly the female population, except for Angela, seems to be interested in him. After that, we get the famous biology scene from a whole other point of view and boy is it enjoyable! We end the chapter with Edward going to Alaska because otherwise he may or may not break into Charlie’s house to kill the daughter of the chief of police. (I rewrote this summary like, five times and still cannot make it less sarcastic. I apologize.) (#sorrynotsorry)

Warnings: Swearing, a lot. Explicit language. Too many parentheses. Slight description of violence. A lot of talk about murder.

It took me two evenings getting through this first chapter (25 pages total) and I am not going to lie: On the first one, I barely managed to make it 5 pages in before I had to stop and lie down and mentally prepare myself for the things that were to come. And lord, did they come!

If you thought being stuck in Bella’s mind was exhausting, welcome to a new level of it. Because Edward is even more self-deprecating than she is. He literally describes his basically vegetative state as purgatory because high school is just that boring. Granted, it sometimes is, but why even is he in high school then? As mentioned later he has 2 doctorate degrees. Could you just not go to university and study something that you haven’t learned yet? If Rosalie, Emmett and Jasper can pass as seniors (and you have to excuse me, but I know practically nothing of the American school system) then I am sure you can pull some kind of ‘gifted’ scheme to put Edward in either advanced classes or have him skip a few years. And fake a High School diploma. Another question: if he has two doctorates, why doesn’t he do something with them? You could apply your mind and focus on other things, like research, furthering humanity, curing cancer! (On that note: why has Carlisle not tried to do that? Just because you need to fly under the radar? There has got to be something you can do, both with your excessive money and apparently brilliant mind, that would benefit all of humanity that you so desperately try not to hurt. And if not personally, you can damn-well fund it or nudge someone in the right direction.)

But this doesn’t just tell us that Edward is bored out of his mind, it also tells us that he is probably unhappy with his non-life as well. In the first four sentences, we have already set the tone for the entire novel and I am contemplating a descent into alcoholism. It is gonna be excruciating to follow this dude’s mind for 756 pages because that is 755 pages too long. His entire existence revolves around making Carlisle proud and proving he still retains some of his humanity. While he sometimes talks about the love he has for his siblings, that seems more of a farce he upholds for his adoptive father (read: god) and mother, which in her case is more of a ‘can’t deal with her disappointed look’ (we all know the one), because besides Alice his opinion of them is basically ‘couldn’t be bothered to give a shit’.

(I wanted to use a gif of her but this was the first thing that popped up when I searched "rosalie" and ngl, it fits his perception of her perfectly)

Rosalie, in his opinion, is shallow, self-obsessed, and superior the everyone (“her mind was a stagnant pool with few surprises”). These two do not get along whatsoever and while this may have been my initial impression of her in Twilight it changed over time. She is more than that and it is baffling that Edward thinks of her that way even after all this time. They are familiar with each other’s stories and I find it hard to believe that he would do anything nice for her based on the initial impression we are presented within this book. Or maybe she now has almost everything she wants: a loving partner, a family, a comfortable life. Why is it so bad? She seems to be comfortable and even happy. Can Edward just not accept that other people might not despise this life as much as he does?

Emmett gets away slightly better than Rosalie, but not much. The impression I got of him from reading his paragraph is that he is an overgrown, glorified child. He has no problem with Edward reading his thoughts, specifically because he carries his heart on his sleeve and if he has something to say, he will say it to your face. He seems to be Edwards second favourite of his siblings.

His absolute favourite is Alice, because “it wasn’t easy, being the freaks among those who were already freaks.” If Bella and Jasper weren’t in the picture, those two would be a couple, I swear! They are the extra special snowflakes (derogatory) among the already special snowflakes (derogatory) (So sorry!). They look out for each other; I can already tell you that they will present a united front concerning anything and everything and ask each other favours (like Alice wanting Edward to keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he doesn’t go on a murdering spree because he’s hungry).

Coincidentally, Edward is pretty mad at her for focusing on her husband/boyfriend/SO and his trip down the serial killer lane in a public high school that she, later on, doesn’t catch a glimpse of Edwards violent fantasies and his possible future with his fangs in Bella’s neck. He seems to be pretty salty about that. I get that for Edward this is probably pretty damning, especially since this is not a regular occurrence, but has the thought crossed his mind that, right now, she has other priorities? Or that this future simply will not come to pass and that is the reason she hasn’t seen it? I am not familiar with how it works in the books (like I said, ages) but in the movies sometimes she gets the visions automatically without focusing and they are dependent on a person’s intent.

Back to Jasper then. And oh, Jasper. They did my boy dirty.

Well, technically not, because he has a much harder time living among humans than the others. But SM did not have to write Edward so dismissive of his struggles. To quote: “And Jasper was … suffering. I suppressed a sigh.” If this is so hard for him, why does he have to be there at all? They can’t always count on Edward and Alice to monitor him like a toddler. It would be far more efficient to just keep him away from humans. Also, and this is something that I have snapchatted to my friends several times and no one has yet come up with a concrete answer for me: You know how half the population is female? And how there are art-classes and PE and probably a school nurse? Accidents happen (I cannot tell you how often my friend had a spontaneous nosebleed in the middle of history class) and PMS is a thing. There will be a girl on her period when Jasper hasn’t fed in a long time. He’s not gonna avoid it by any stretch of the world by being in school. Have him stay home with Esme and work more in smaller steps.

“Why flirt with disaster?” If you can say that in response to Jasper having fantasies about drinking the blood of one of his classmates which starts with what is an exhibitionist-inclined make-out, why can’t you stay away from Bella? Because let me tell you: the best scene in this chapter was Edwards’s mind working out how to best kill his entire biology class just so he can rip open the new student and afterwards he doesn’t take his advice and cannot stay the fuck away. To his credit though, he tries. For like, half a chapter.

Until that point, where he smelled her, Bella was entirely mundane and uninteresting. He’s seen her in the minds of other students and the cafeteria and the most remarkable thing about her is that he can’t read her mind. He is very dismissive of it: “Not that I would find anything worth listening to.” So yeah, she doesn’t particularly strike his fancy or frankly, his interest.

But then she steps into the airflow that full-on blows her scent into his face and I have no words, except damn! And from that on we get the seven and a half most enjoyable pages of this chapter (dare I say the whole book?), the murder fantasies. What does it say about this book that this is the best scene so far? I found it quite well written to be honest. How he changes his second plan midway through the first because there are too many instances of the others screaming for help or alerting everyone else and, most importantly, Bellas body would grow cold while he snaps about 19 necks in 5 seconds. He is, for a monster without control, very methodical in his imaginary attempts to murder his class. Him thinking he has to destroy evidence, figuring out how he could best and most efficiently go about it, ultimately not relishing the killing but seeing it as the removal of an obstacle – I am getting some serious Hannibal vibes.

Of course, the thing holding him back is Carlisle and how Edward knows that his adoptive father would forgive him for this, because “he thought I was better than I was”. Only Edward being a stubborn bitch and wanting to prove something to Carlisle keeps around 20 people alive that day.

While I think the scene is incredible, it still rubs me the wrong way in a particular aspect: Edward has a raging fang-boner (pardon my French) for Bella and has the gall to judge Jasper simply because for him that is a permanent state of being. If anything, it makes me have a lot more respect for Jasper (and we can get into the confederate army major thing another time, I am aware of that) because he hasn’t ripped open someone’s bowels. But that isn’t where I was going with this. Edward only takes an interest in Bella because she smells like ecstasy to him. Because his instincts attract him to a meal so scrumptious, he’s never gonna forget it again. What a great start for a relationship! Also, he hates her because of her scent and this somehow keeps him sane. I either do not get boys in general or Edward Cullen specifically. Probably both.

It also takes him waaay too long to stop breathing. (And I know that he uses the phrase “sinking my teeth through that fine, thin, see-through skin to the hot, wet, pulsing-” to describe her neck, but I have read too much horribly/well-written E-rated fanfics on AO3 to not think of a vagina when I read this.)

And even after he has resolved to not abduct and kill the new student, he still fantasizes about doing it. Like I said, reading his fantasies is pretty enjoyable, but why did SM have to give them to us in the first chapter? Nothing in this book is gonna compare to this description ever again and I am sad about it. I know, who’d have thought?

Then we get to the part where he thinks about following her to her house because to kill her there is “the responsible way to deal with this”. Excuse me? Oh man, still really enjoyable to read, but now I am genuinely scared for Bella!

Because this is not just very detailed, but also very thought out. I am not sure if SM decided to ramp up the fear-factor for Edward because while everyone theoretically knows that he could snap a neck with his pinkie, the thirst was very much real about a decade ago and everyone just kinda glossed over the fact that Edward is a killing-machine. Not sure if Bella wouldn’t take Jacobs concerns regarding sex with a vampire while she was still human a little more seriously if she knew that was how her husband thought about her when they met. Is this supposed to entice me or turn me on? Not that it ever could in general, because Edward, but after that description, I am very much turned off, actually, and not at all receptive to this dude and want to tell Bella to run for the hills or La Push and never come back. This is, good writing aside, disturbing!

After class, he heads out in his car and listens to calming music, which he does a lot. I’ll keep tabs on how often and keep you posted. And this is where he gets angry with Alice for focusing on Jasper instead of him. To quote: “Was she so absorbed with watching for trouble with Jasper that she’d missed this much more horrific possibility?” Well, maybe because her boyfriend has a much harder time with basically every student in the school rather than just one and is much more likely to flip his table in English and jump the teacher (and not in a fun way). And that her life doesn’t revolve around you!

As I said, the chapter ends with him speeding off into the night, because that is the only responsible choice. If you fell you it best to remove yourself from the situation, do it. But maybe stay consistent afterwards.

Good things: The description of Edwards methodical nature when planning the murders. Very well written, as well as his portrayal as a ruthless monster compared to the amped-up teenage-heartthrob-thing we got from Bellas point of view. The danger surrounding a vampire never really came through, but now it did. I actually fear for her. Very impressive writing.

Bad things: How easily and nonchalantly he tries to manipulate his way into a higher-level science class was very disturbing. How dismissive he is of almost all of his siblings and their problems or their happiness. The fact that the first feelings he had towards Bella are ambivalence and hatred.

they give melio.das a flaw of “repeated sexual offender” with the same level of gravitas and plot-irrelevance that ya authors make their self-insert protagonists “clumsy” (i.e. it’s written as a “flaw” but doesn’t affect the plot and is often used for ““comedic effect””). unlike clumsiness though, repeatedly groping women should get a person arrested. thanks

elizabeth is still a damsel

jericho. not the feminist take that the author thinks she is. awful

ultimately the cool female villains turn out to be not that strong or important, and also get love interest’d with members of the main heroic cast (& both’s motives depend on a man)

depending on how her character arc ends up diane’s obsession with wishing she wasn’t a giant is kinda uncomfortable

i don’t mind that elaine looks young-ish but i find it uncomfortable that she has an anime kid voice to top it all off (in jp...?)

gil.thunder’s side-switch wasn’t appropriately established and his og character sucks. years of acting as a moustache-twirling bishie villain don’t appear to have affected his psyche in a meaningful way, and it’s impossible to come away knowing what he’s supposed to act like now

final villains of the first arc are BORING (i think they get more characterisation after they come back to life lmao)

usual shonen bullshit that is both a draw to the show and also makes threat levels kind of ridiculous and non-existent after a certain point (getting bogged down in endless fights, people coming back to life, refusal to acknowledge that maybe their society’s awful power structures are the problem, rapidly changing definition of “the most powerful villain EVER”, etc.)... all encompassed in one pig death fakeout

all the characters are adult colleagues (above everything else) and they act like it. (they’re... kind of found family nakama but there’s a bit more there.) they’re all unique, respected, practiced masters of their craft from the beginning of the story

gula & jericho for the when they were threatening were REALLY cool. i am so psyched at the thought of a random minor young female villain who is so badass & dedicated to the evil cause she’s willing to enter a near-death state to chase some random losers into hell. gula’s outfit slaps

(cw: suicide) ban is a really neat character. he’s like... an interpretation of a “vampire curse”. he was never really happy before he achieved immortality (seeking it only because ”if you live long enough, something good might happen to you eventually, i guess”), and getting it (by accident) only made him Worse - more self-destructive and more isolated from the people around him. he often can’t bring himself to care about much of anything, other people don’t care about him, and ultimately his existence is so fucked up and he’s laden with so much guilt that he doesn’t care about himself either. but he’s also a fun guy! incredibly powerful! will help you beat up your abusive dad! probably bi! also he has his tits out at all times and who am i to say no 2 that

personality: part of the reason that he’s isolated from other people (and othered) is his social class... but a main part of it is how his childhood kind of, created his personality. he doesn’t really connect to social norms (or laws), has niche interests, and has a “weird”, disconnected personality (again, made way worse by living 100 years past his lifetime). that being said, he’s not emotionally unintelligent, has interests outside of fighting, and is ultimately a good person

(maybe don’t read this one if you’re interested in watching? it’s all spoilers) Depression: ban willingly runs head-first into danger not just bc it’s a valid fighting technique for someone who can’t die but bc he’s... too ready to give up. but this reveal is only interesting bc it comes after like. a period of getting along with the group, being friends and having fun. ultimately hanging out with them hasn’t solved his problems - it’s just made him able to put them aside for a little while... until his trauma gets brought up, at which point he’s willing to take the first hint of an easy exit, despite how unlikely it is that it’d achieve his supposed goal, if it just lets him relieve himself of his guilt and existential suffering by letting him believe for just one second that he can fix all of the things that he “broke” with his own death (note: killing melio.das would have broken his heart and probably have been suicide by proxy). (this causes a lot of trouble and is not framed as positive, but it’s also not framed as all his fault. and he has to deal with the consequences of this? he realises in retrospect that it was an incredibly unsound idea? and lEAVES THE GROUP BC HE REALISES HE HAS TO TAKE A BREAK???)

comparing ban to a traditional vampire arc: unlike with vampires (who are often an allegory for a group of people, e.g. rich people or oppressed groups) there’s only one ban. and therefore instead of having a group with the same trauma he just suffers alone

meaningful conflict between the main characters. i don’t think i’ve ever really gotten this in a shonen show? there’s a LOT of unresolved trauma. the characters still work together bc they’re Adults... but it’s simmering

ban <-> meli: meli is the only person besides elaine who ever really understood ban... but that doesn’t mean that ban’s ok, now (in fact, the resentment about only being understood by one person kind of makes him... worse). (e: meli also has connections to the rare fantasy creature which started ban’s life hell). ban has too much damage to the point that he becomes a liability

ban <-> king: resolved early, but still good. king is convinced that ban is the cause of all of his suffering partly bc he’s too jealous to admit that smo else got close to his sister when he couldn’t; ban has enough guilt that he just Takes It. even afterwards their personalities are kind of incompatible so it’s fun to see them hang out

meli <-> (king <-> diane): relationship drama but it’s not a frustrating bc it’s relevant to each character’s flaws and Baggage (and the plot doesn’t bother to pretend that diane will end up with melio). king has a lot of guilt over accidentally (?) ghosting his family and SOME of it’s valid (but not all). king is jealous of meli for being the target of diane’s affection but also kind of lowkey thinks he doesn’t deserve her bc of the pain he’s caused her

meli <-> elizabeth <-> diane: diane KNOWS she’s not going to be in a relationship with meli but she still desperately holds onto hope. diane’s fears about being unlovable feed into her lack of self esteem as an oppressed (or at minimum, villanized) minority

elizabeth (the princess) is firmly a member of the team and her determination and character improvement is taken seriously. she DOES get badass moments BEFORE she’s revealed to be a reincarnated angel child or whatever

diane (the only female member of the 7 sins who has a big role this season) is consistently taken seriously (by the writers & other characters)

elizabeth & diane get to INTERACT!! and BE FRIENDS!!

i love elaine. first show i’ve seen that (unintentionally? & through fantasy tropes??) nails Older Sister Disease, i.e. the oldest female sibling being left to deal with all the family business, emotional and physical baggage, while all the male/younger siblings just fuck off. caring for your family members but also lowkey resenting them. they don’t invalidate her feelings even after relieving king of a little of the responsibility for her suffering. (i liked the romance prequel manga a lot - i p much only picked up the anime bc i bought into the romance b/w her and ban)

(despite everything) meli.odas acts like a proper leader for his squad. he takes his responsibilities seriously and treats his colleagues as his equals

ngl the twist with gowther disguising himself and his protagonist hair as a disposable marked-for-death npc was really funny

aesthetic is unique and distinct from the overdone isekai dnd fantasy that’s popular atm

the first ed song by flow & granr.odeo cheers me up every time
