Prelims - Pretty Cure

In those specific cases, it's likely (or certain sometimes) that the names translate as follow :

I feel so bad for everyone in that poll quoting the viral song made nearly a full decade after Miku's release by a band who, to my knowledge, have never otherwise used Miku, because little do they know that my initial kneejerk source for "Miku green" is that she is clearly referred to as such by one of the first Rin and Len songs, released in 2008! Do not cite the deep magic to me, Witch! I was there before it was written, and had my mind made up!

And everything else about her is green, fanon and canon. Her character item (a spring onion) is green (while Rin has an orange and Len a banana, in order to distinguish them), and her glow stick color is clearly green.

Someone mentioned that Gumi is "the green one," but I don't think that bears out—one could just as easily argue that IA (or VY2 Yuma, or SF-A2 miki, or Nekomura Iroha, or Ruby, or Meika Hime) is "the pink one" and thus Luka cannot be. Miku is "the green one" among the Cryptonloids, which is the primary location of this kind of color branding—not to say, again, that Gumi is not strongly associated with green (and orange), but rather that she does not have to be separated in color form from other VOCALOIDs in, e.g., concert glow stick form.

Meanwhile, Crypton consistently refers to her as "blue-green." (ブルーグリーン) And even when 緑 midori "green" is used, it doesn't necessarily mean "not blue." Nor does 青い aoi "blue" necessarily mean "not green"—as evidenced by green apples and crosswalk lights being referred to as 青い in Japanese. That's why Miku recommends you try 緑のジュース midori no juusu "the green juice" in Japanese, but "big pale blue juice" in English.

It's an interesting debate, because it makes me extremely nerdily longwinded for no reason. We don't know whether Miku is blue or green. We will never know. There is no "right answer." And yet I am absolutely certain, and she is green. Good night.

#G4: Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!)

Summary:

Midori Asakusa draws detailed landscapes and backgrounds of both the world around her and the one within her boundless imagination. Even the simple act of doodling on a wall evolves into an emergency repair on the outer hull of her spaceship. She is only brought back to reality by her best friend Sayaka Kanamori. The two are stark opposites, with Asakusa’s childlike wonder contrasted by Kanamori’s calculated approach to life.

After a chance encounter where the two “save” the young model Tsubame Misuzaki from her overprotective bodyguard, a connection instantly sparks between Asakusa and Misuzaki, as both share an intense passion for art and animation. Whereas Asakusa is interested in backgrounds and settings, Misuzaki loves drawing the human form. Sensing a money-making opportunity, Kanamori suggests that they start an animation club. Thus begins the trio’s journey of producing animation that will awe the world.

Propaganda:

It’s playing with animation in a really cool way, AND it is just gorgeous. The backgrounds are done in a beautiful painterly style, and each environment is detailed and evokes wonder.

Each of the three girls is a unique and fleshed-out character, and their interactions and blossoming friendship are super fun and wholesome to watch. The dialogue is also very realistic—it really feels like what three high school nerdy girl friends would talk about. Each has her own strengths, in animation, organization and craft, such that they really come together as a team and manage to make something beautiful.

The show is fun, heartwarming and doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same time it is so so sincere. Quiet and serious moments can be quiet and serious without needless bathos, and fun sequences (like a chase through the school) are given extra effort to be zany and funny, and fully animated in both senses of the word. Above all, you feel a strong love for animation and deep wonder of the world permeating the series.

#G7: Snow White with the Red Hair (Akagami no Shirayuki-hime)

Summary:

Although her name means “snow white,” Shirayuki is a cheerful, red-haired girl living in the country of Tanbarun who works diligently as an apothecary at her herbal shop. Her life changes drastically when she is noticed by the silly prince of Tanbarun, Prince Raji, who then tries to force her to become his concubine. Unwilling to give up her freedom, Shirayuki cuts her long red hair and escapes into the forest, where she is rescued from Raji by Zen Wistalia, the second prince of a neighboring country, and his two aides. Hoping to repay her debt to the trio someday, Shirayuki sets her sights on pursuing a career as the court herbalist in Zen’s country, Clarines. Akagami no Shirayuki-hime depicts Shirayuki’s journey toward a new life at the royal palace of Clarines, as well as Zen’s endeavor to become a prince worthy of his title. As loyal friendships are forged and deadly enemies formed, Shirayuki and Zen slowly learn to support each other as they walk their own paths.

Propaganda:

This is my absolute favourite romance anime of all time. The characters are delightful, and the romance is well-paced, with plenty of healthy communication between the two leads. The story never feels boring, managing to pull off both gentle slice of life and exciting adventures with ease. It features gorgeous animation by Studio Bones and a lovely soundtrack.

The pipe in hand is no feat in Japanese craftsmanship. In fact, it is nearly cracked at the tip, made of cheap wood and bought (or in her case, stolen) from one of Kyoto's bustling markets. The Yamoto's may adorn their recently returned Hime in gowns, tassels, and silks. But when push came to shove, Midori is still comfortable with what she knows. Or more accurately, what she has earned. Her lips pucker along the pipe, inhaling the tobacco with ease. A rotten habit, labeled as "unladylike" by her cohorts and peers alike, that is far too good to give up. Still, Midori needn't start a fuss over nothing, and so the midnight foyer into the courtyard is a necessity. Of course, she knows there is company before she can even turn around. She spent too long on her own, to not keep one pulse on her surroundings at all time. But if the Qing's are a threat to the rest of her blood relatives, they are no more than a peculiar interest to Midori. She acknowledges the Prince with a wordless nod, assessing everything from his fine clothes to his noble stance. Oh yes, he was born and raised to an Empire, alright.

"I'm told our kingdoms despise each other." Midori speaks out, mid-puff. Matter-of-fact and with a twinge of suspicious humor, in her heavily accented English. "And that your Emperor's one alliance and battleship away from knocking on our seas." She turns her shoulder, her words a scandal. What would her family think of Midori speaking so boldly, and showing all of her cards? "All this because of some petty grudge, several old men ago?" Midori laughs. "Isn't that petty?"

Framing Device: An anime loving teenager is telling classic fairytales to the kids they babysit as bedtime stories- with a twist!

Side Note: Nursery Rhymes being adapted is more for Shrek. So they won’t be here- sorry about that. But they do a good job at it. This anthology is meant for readers 12 and up, due to some of the themes in some of the stories.
