Aziraphale's bibles
Have you ever noticed how many bibles Aziraphale has just lying about? So. Many. Bibles. Oodles of bibles! In S1 we only saw two, one on top of the desk that he used for checking the number of the beast in Revelations; and the other one on the desk surface, right behind his angel mug when he sat to read The Book (not that book, the other book, the one with the true prophecies).

In S2, we see no less than five bibles on his desk alone and more around the bookshop.

The first one is on the left, right under the little "For the Young: Hymns for Church and Home, with Forms of Services" book, which incidentally opens to: "So shall no wicked thing draw near, To do us harm or cause us fear." (This angel has no shame).

Then there are three more in the desk's middle compartments. One, with a green cover, is on the left slot, right above the tray with pens (this one is a New Testament only). The other two, both with black covers, are right behind the mug, where the RadioTimes watermark is. They look identical but they could be two volumes of the same edition or two different editions. We can probably assume one of these is supposed to be the one from S1. The desk in S1 didn't have compartments, it had drawers so there were no books in that area.

The last one is the on on top of the desk, on the right. This would be the same he used in S1 (although the bible itself is different)

On his right side, sometimes he has an easel where he displays a large book. This is not a bible itself, but an illustrated book of biblical motifs. Sometimes it is closed and sometimes it is open. He normally has it on the Adam and Eve page (cheeky!) but in Ep 2 he opened it to the Book of Job page instead.

There is yet another one in the shelf that Gabriel Jim is organizing

And there is one more in the first backroom (the one with the computer where he talks with Gabriel and Sandalphon). It is on a little table by the door of the private backroom (the one where he confers with Crowley in)

But there is a set of bibles that are even more important to him than any of the other ones. Although the show never mentioned it, the book tells us that in addition to his passion for prophecy books, he also loves and collects misprinted bibles*:
"And he had a complete set of the Infamous Bibles, individually named from errors in typesetting. These Bibles included the Unrighteous Bible, so called from a printer’s error which caused it to proclaim, in I Corinthians, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall inherit the Kingdom of God?”; and the Wicked Bible, printed by Barker and Lucas in 1632, in which the word not was omitted from the seventh commandment, making it “Thou shalt commit Adultery.” There were the Discharge Bible, the Treacle Bible, the Standing Fishes Bible, the Charing Cross Bible and the rest. Aziraphale had them all. Even the very rarest, a Bible published in 1651 by the London publishing firm of Bilton and Scaggs."
This collection of bibles is hiding in plain sight and readily on hand. Just ask Jim!

The rest are right there on Aziraphale's desk. The tags are hard to read but I found, from right to left, The Treacle Bible, The Discharge Bible, The Unrighteous Bible, then three that I couldn't decipher, the Standing Fishes Bible and The Charing Cross Bible. One of those three is supposed to be the Buggre All This Bible, but none of the tags seemed to fit.

*All the bibles mentioned are real except for the Charing Cross Bible and the Buggre Alle This Bible which in the GO world was printed by Bilton and Scaggs, the publishing company that also printed The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. I have a whole post about Bilton and Scaggs if interested. Now, looking back to S1, as part of his restoring the world, Adam replaced Aziraphale's misprinted bibles with Just William books. Let that sink in... Adam moved Aziraphale's bibles from their righteous place. No wonder Crowley realized it right away. These are Aziraphale's bibles for Go- for Sat- for Somebody's sake!

Marbled Monday
It's been a minute since we last posted for Marbled Monday but we're back with an exciting combed French curl or snail pattern! This pattern was created by dropping colors onto the water bath, creating a gel-git (or zig-zag) pattern with a stylus, then combing it once perpendicular to the gel-git with a fine-toothed comb creating a pattern called nonpareil, and finally using a wide-toothed comb to create the characteristic curly swirly snails. This particular pattern uses blue, maroon, cream, and yellow. The marbled paper was used for both the front and back covers and the endpapers of the book.
The book inside the lovely marbled binding is a 1779 ninth edition of Sketches from Nature, which features "upwards of one hundred portraits, or characters, of the most conspicuous persons in the kingdom." This edition was printed for George Kearsly (or Kearsley, 1739-1790) and was written by an anonymous author. It is a satirical piece with humorous profiles of well-known figures and so the names are all printed with blanks in the middles (ie: Mr. G_____s), but in our copy all of the names have been filled in by an industrious owner.

COMING OUT ON JUNE 2023: "WHEN THE STARS ALIGHT" BY CAMILLA ANDREW

Thanks to tumblr I've been fortunate enough to meet incredibly talented artists of all kinds. Among them, one of the greatest privileges this site has let me enjoy was that, last year, I got to read earlier versions of the two first instalments of this wonderful series: "The Essence of the Equinox". Now, I get to read the definite version of this indie book, and soon will be able to hold what's setting out to be a gorgeous print edition in my hands ^-^
Alongside some other short stories and a novelette I've read as well, tEotE portrays an intricately built magical world that's a welcome change of pace from the modern fantasy I had been finding trite, woefully misogynistic and repetitive in the last few years. That level of depth and originality in the worldbuilding alone would've been enough for it to carve a space into my heart, but it doesn't stop there.
I've always been a fan of descriptive, lyrical prose; the kind that makes you want to pace yourself and sit back to enjoy a good turn of phrase and daydream about the lovely (or terrible) scenarios it presents. If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, you'll find plenty of both here. On a personal note, I recommend reading on a full stomach: the food descriptions are particularly mouth-watering xD. But my favourite bit is how the different settings come alive in the narration, especially the contrasting dream-like Soleterea and the nightmare-inducing land of Mortos.
Other points in its favour for me, and I'm willing to bet, for a lot of the people who follow me, are its larger-than-life leads and its female-majority ensemble of characters, all of whom are varied and fascinating in their own right, with important roles inside the story, and who'll you get to meet in earnest thanks to an expanding omniscient narrator.

Princess Laila Rose of Soleterea, from a powerful race of fallen stars in humanoid form, is the protagonist of the trilogy. In fairness, she's not the first character in the 'verse that truly caught my eye; that honour goes to a particular Mortesian blood sorcerer who you won't properly meet until the second book (which is intended to be published a year after this one). But she quickly rose in the ranks and has become one of my favourite characters, period; in this and any other canon.
First of all, she's the uncontested star (no pun intended) of the story, outshone by none (that one, I admit, was on purpose). She's a firm idealist whose optimism is put to the test in her journey; she possesses endless charm and a silver tongue, as well as difficult insecurities that make her all the more endearing to me. She's at the centre of everything, and the dynamics that spark around her are another one of the selling points of the series: from her toxic and most defining relationship with her Impératrice and mother Amira, to her complicated friendship with her guard and past paramour Lyra; and, of course, to the intense, passionate and doomed romance that propels the series.
The novel's plot is kick-started when Laila's work examining potentially dangerous magical objects leads her to discover what seems to be a demonic monster encased in a block of ice. He turns out to be Dominus, a prince of a hidden immortal race: the Occassi, from Mortos; a kingdom as different from the idyllic Soleterea as it can be. When he gets free Laila travels with him on a diplomatic mission to establish contact and relations with this species. This puts her right in the middle of that country's dysfunctional royal family: a heartless king, his reluctant heir, and an ambitious bastard son: Darius Calantis.

I find him to be the best representative of Mortos' realm, in a similar way that Laila is for Soleterea. He's suave and shrewd and intellectual in a land that puts little value on anything of the sort, more interested in brute force and military conquests. His frustrated ambitions, routinely suffocated by a tyrannical father, might find an outlet thanks to this new realm. He is, definitely, another character to look out for ;)
Finally, I'll say that most of all, this book both subverts and surpasses expectations. For example, as someone who tends toward scepticism when it comes to romance (especially that of the female heroine/villainous male character variety), I nonetheless loved every choice pertaining to the romantic subplot in this book. And I must insist on how after this one, an even better sequel (with some of my most beloved characters in the series!) awaits you ^-^

On top of being a delight for fans of cold, complex female leads and tragic sapphic romance enjoyers, it'll offer you a taste of the author's style and the world she's created.

Princess Calla Tuoleimi lurks in hiding. Five years ago, a massacre killed her parents and left the palace of Er empty…and she was the one who did it. Before King Kasa’s forces in San can catch her, she plans to finish the job and bring down the monarchy. Her reclusive uncle always greets the victor of the games, so if she wins, she gets her opportunity at last to kill him.
Enter Anton Makusa, an exiled aristocrat. His childhood love has lain in a coma since they were both ousted from the palace, and he’s deep in debt trying to keep her alive. Thankfully, he’s one of the best jumpers in the kingdom, flitting from body to body at will. His last chance at saving her is entering the games and winning.
Calla finds both an unexpected alliance with Anton and help from King Kasa’s adopted son, August, who wants to mend Talin’s ills. *Opinions*
So this is one of the books that I got through my Adult-Book-only Fairyloot subscription, and I will admit that I was a little skeptical. I had heard some middling reviews about Chole Gong’s Young Adult Romeo and Juliette retelling, so I wasn’t sure how I would get on with this novel inspired by Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra. I am happy to inform you that I really enjoyed my time with this novel, though it took some time to collect my feelings on this story and the characters that Gong introduces us to. While I will admit that the scaffolding of the plot was not original, I enjoyed the setting and characters enough that I kept turning the pages to see how this set-up we had seen before would play out. 
The plot of this novel is rather simple at its core and something that has been used before. Two competitors enter a tournament to the death for different reasons, but both have no option but to win. There is an individual behind the scenes pulling the strings, other disruptive forces at work, and an uneasy alliance between the two competitors might turn into something more. After the success of The Hunger Games, and Battle Royal before that, competition to the death is a very common plot in novels and a few of the lower-rated reviews complained about this scaffolding for the story. However, while Gong does make a number of comments about capitalism, the 1%, and social ills, there is a very different tone than The Hunger Games. Everyone enters the games willingly, even paying an entry fee, instead of being forced to fight to the death. They can also leave the games of their own accord at any time without fighting or killing. The society in San-Er has a lot of problems, which Princess Calla Tuoleimi and Prince August Shenzhi want to change in their own ways, but it is managed in a different way than that of The Hunger Games, so I don’t think it’s a fair comparison.   
I have seen a number of reviews complaining about the lack of solid world-building and that things are just said are happening in San-Er without any explanation. While I think some of that is due to not picking up subtle hints that Gong left throughout the story, some of it is that this is the first novel in a trilogy. Now, I will admit that at the back of the Fairyloot edition, there was a printed conversation with Gong, in which she stated that this first novel was very self-contained, but the world would expand in the rest of the series. While I am a strong believer that the story should stand on its own without reading author interviews or blog posts, I didn’t have any issue with the world-building. This novel was about the games and that is what it is focused on, with the rules or lack of them clearly defined. The rules of qi were also explained and then challenged without the context of this novel in a way that made sense to me. Perhaps I was just too enamored with the setting to be bothered by things that were grating to other people. I am also a reader who appreciates character work over plot so that probably contributes to it. 
Speaking of the setting, Gong did a very good job of making the city of San-Er a living breathing character in this novel. You can easily visualize the neon lights, the mass of humanity that is constantly on top of each other, and the smells and sounds that are constant throughout the novel. Gong also makes the reader feel the absence of these things when there are scenes in the Palace of Union or outside of the wall. While at times all the chaos in the city made it hard to track the action that was happening, which added to the chaotic nature of the action sequences in this novel. Still, the setting was a large reason why I enjoyed this novel as much as I did, I really got immersed into the world that Gong created and the constant struggle that the characters and citizens were facing. 
There are three main characters in this novel, Princess Calla Tuolemi, Prince August Shenzhi, and Anton Makusa. Now I don’t know if any of them can be called likable, but I find Calla the most sympathetic of the bunch. What drives her in the games is a naive notion that King Kasa is the reason for all the horrors and tragedy within the city and if she could just remove him from his reign, things would improve for the citizens of Talin. Now Calla is such a practical character that this thought that removing Kasa would start the country toward the path of healing or trusting August who wants the same thing was a little odd to me. However, her thought process usually makes sense, even if she makes decisions that aren’t the smartest. Given the ending of the novel, I am interested in seeing how her character is going to be in the sequel. 
Anton Makusa grows on you as the story progresses, but he doesn’t change, he just becomes obsessed with something new and does whatever possible to keep it. I think what keeps him from being completely unlikable is the fact that he is aware that he can be insufferable at times. I also enjoyed when he is around Calla and the balance they strike between competitors and whatever else is blooming between them. I will admit that the use of “I love you” in this novel was far too quick, especially given the circumstances, but I also have not read the source material so perhaps that is the reason. 
Prince August is the least likable, but the most interesting. Much like Anton, your opinion of him shifts throughout the novel, but he does not get enough screen time to really draw any conclusions about his character. Instead, you get the way that numerous people react to August, especially those who are closest to him. While Calla has naivety and Anton has confidence that is warranted, it is hard to get a read on August. Given the events at the end of the novel, it is unclear if we are going to get a better idea about him as the trilogy continues, but I am excited to get answers if they are provided. 
Overall, I enjoyed this novel a lot more than I expected and it is a 4-star read. However, if someone asked me why I liked the novel I would have a hard time pinpointing something other than the setting. While this is a full arc of a story, telling what happened during the games, the plot and the characters aren’t sitting in my feelings. That being said, I keep thinking about this novel and will pick up the sequel when it comes out.

Humanity appreciation post. So I went to this cute vintage shop a few weeks ago and wanted to buy a ring, unfortunately as I reached for my wallet I realized it wasn't there. Mortified, I told the cashier (a middle aged lady who I think owned the store) that I'd just stop by in a few days when I remembered to actually bring money. She told me though, to take the ring and just pay her back later.
A few days later I was waiting for a takeout order and decided to go into a Gamestop and ask if they had any tears of the kingdom prints for sale since there were some gorgeous ones in the windows. The cashier informed me that they didn't have anything currently but might have some things in stocks after the games release. After a few minutes of perusing the stores goods the cashier mentioned that there might be some left over prints that the store got for advertising. He then went into the bank and quickly emerged with half of the poster that I had dearly wanted from the collectors edition, but wasn't filled with quite enough hubris to get. He handed it to me and said it was a bit bent but I could have it if I wanted

This was later dropped, in the same way as shoe buckles for male pumps were replaced by bowties around the turn of the 19th century.

According to fashion historians, the top hat may have descended directly from the sugarloaf hat;[2] otherwise it is difficult to establish provenance for its creation.[3] Gentlemen began to replace the tricorne with the top hat at the end of the 18th century; a painting by Charles Vernet of 1796, Un Incroyable, shows a French dandy (one of the Incroyables et Merveilleuses) with such a hat.[4] The first silk top hat in England is credited to George Dunnage, a hatter from Middlesex, in 1793.[5] The invention of the top hat is often erroneously credited to a haberdasher named John Hetherington.
Within 30 years top hats had become popular with all social classes, with even workmen wearing them. At that time those worn by members of the upper classes were usually made of felted beaver fur; the generic name "stuff hat" was applied to hats made from various non-fur felts. The hats became part of the uniforms worn by policemen and postmen (to give them the appearance of authority); since these people spent most of their time outdoors, their hats were topped with black oilcloth.[6]
19th century[edit]
Between the latter part of 18th century and the early part of the 19th century, felted beaver fur was slowly replaced by silk "hatter's plush", though the silk topper met with resistance from those who preferred the beaver hat.
The 1840s and the 1850s saw it reach its most extreme form, with ever-higher crowns and narrow brims. The stovepipe hat was a variety with mostly straight sides, while one with slightly convex sides was called the "chimney pot".[7] The style most commonly referred to as the stovepipe was popularized in the United States by Abraham Lincoln during his presidency; though it is postulated[by whom?] that he may never have called it stovepipe himself, but merely a silk hat or a plug hat. Lincoln often carried documents and letters inside the hat.[8] One of Lincoln's top hats is kept on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.[9]

In this popular print of the 1848 "Five Days of Milan", the Italian city's uprising against Austrian rule, several combatants are shown wearing top hats.
During the 19th century, the top hat developed from a fashion into a symbol of urban respectability, and this was assured when Prince Albert started wearing them in 1850; the rise in popularity of the silk plush top hat possibly led to a decline in beaver hats, sharply reducing the size of the beaver trapping industry in North America, though it is also postulated[by whom?] that the beaver numbers were also reducing at the same time. Whether it directly affected or was coincidental to the decline of the beaver trade is debatable.
James Laver once observed that an assemblage of "toppers" resembled factory chimneys and thus added to the mood of the industrial era. In England, post-Brummel dandies went in for flared crowns and swooping brims. Their counterparts in France, known as the "Incroyables", wore top hats of such outlandish dimensions that there was no room for them in overcrowded cloakrooms until the invention of the collapsible top hat.[10][11]
20th century[edit]
Until World War I the top hat was maintained as a standard item of formal outdoor wear by upper-class males for both daytime and evening usage. Considerations of convenience and expense meant however that it was increasingly superseded by soft hats for ordinary wear. By the end of World War II, it had become a comparative rarity, though it continued to be worn regularly in certain roles. In Britain these included holders of various positions in the Bank of England and City stockbroking, and boys at some public schools. All the civilian members of the Japanese delegation that signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on 2 September 1945, wore top hats, reflecting common diplomatic practice at the time.[12]
The top hat persisted in politics and international diplomacy for many years. In the Soviet Union, there was debate as to whether its diplomats should follow the international conventions and wear a top hat. Instead a diplomatic uniform with peaked cap for formal occasions was adopted. Top hats were part of formal wear for U.S. presidential inaugurations for many years. President Dwight D. Eisenhower spurned the hat for his inauguration, but John F. Kennedy, who was accustomed to formal dress, brought it back for his in 1961. Nevertheless, Kennedy delivered his forceful inaugural address hatless, reinforcing the image of vigor he desired to project, and setting the tone for an active administration to follow.
His successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, did not wear a top hat for any part of his inauguration in 1965, and the hat has not been worn since for this purpose.[13]
In the United Kingdom, the post of Government Broker in the London Stock Exchange that required the wearing of a top hat in the streets of the City of London was abolished by the "Big Bang" reforms of October 1986.[14] In the British House of Commons, a rule requiring a Member of Parliament who wished to raise a point of order during a division, having to speak seated with a top hat on, was abolished in 1998. Spare top hats were kept in the chamber in case they were needed. The Modernisation Select Committee commented that "This particular practice has almost certainly brought the House into greater ridicule than almost any other".[15]
Although Eton College has long abandoned the top hat as part of its uniform, top hats are still worn by "Monitors" at Harrow School with their Sunday dress uniform.[16] They are worn by male members of the British Royal Family on State occasions as an alternative to military uniform, for instance, in the Carriage Procession at the Diamond Jubilee in 2012.[17] Top hats may also be worn at some horse racing meetings, notably The Derby[18] and Royal Ascot.[19] Top hats are worn at the Tynwald Day ceremony and a few other formal occasions in the Isle of Man.
In George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four, the top hat features prominently in the propaganda of the book's totalitarian regime: "These rich men were called capitalists. They were fat, ugly men with wicked faces [...] dressed in a long black coat which was called a frock coat, and a queer, shiny hat shaped like a stovepipe, which was called a top hat. This was the uniform of the capitalists, and no one else was allowed to wear it."[20]

21st century[edit]
The modern standard top hat is a hard, black silk hat, characteristically made of fur. The acceptable colors are much as they have traditionally been, with "white" hats (which are actually grey), a daytime racing color, worn at the less formal occasions demanding a top hat, such as Royal Ascot, or with a morning suit. In the U.S. top hats are worn widely in coaching, a driven horse discipline, as well as for formal riding to hounds.
The collapsible silk opera hat, or crush hat, is still worn on occasions, and black in color if worn with evening wear as part of white tie,[21] and is still made by a few companies, of the traditional materials of satin or grosgrain silk. The other alternative hat for eveningwear is the normal hard shell.[22]
In formal academic dress, the Finnish and Swedish doctoral hat is a variant of the top hat, and remains in use today.
American rock musician Tom Petty was known for wearing several types of top hats throughout his career and in his music videos such as "Don't Come Around Here No More". The British-American musician Slash has sported a top hat since he was in Guns N' Roses, a look that has become iconic for him.[23] Panic! at the Disco's Brendon Urie is also a frequent wearer of top hats. He has been known to wear them in previous live performances on their Nothing Rhymes with Circus tour and in the music videos, "The Ballad of Mona Lisa" and "I Write Sins Not Tragedies".

Introduction
LEAP is a massive worldwide technology expo held annually in Saudi Arabia. It started in the year 2022 with a blast, and this year was no exception. It was a four-day action-packed week that began on February 6th and ended on February 9th, 2023. It attracted people from Africa, Europe, America, the Middle East, GCC, and all over the world. The theme “Into New Worlds” — was conceived with the futuristic thought — “to build a city on the moon by 2070, have a human standing on Mars by 2035, and create digital twin cities and entire virtual worlds”
Our founder, Anil Reddy, got the chance to be part of this captivating event. This blog will take you on a journey that will show you a recap of 5 interesting highlights of LEAP 2023 through Anil’s lens.
The Biggest Global Tech Event

From entrepreneurs and CEOs to tech enthusiasts to designers to investors, LEAP saw them all. For four days straight, the center haul was increasing every day with individuals trying to get into the area. Riyadh was bustling due to this event, and the event area was constantly occupied by thought-provoking and ground-breaking initiatives that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Keeping in mind the theme of the event, each day’s sessions, workshops, and keynotes were focused on a different pillar viz. spark, collaboration, momentum, and the future.
Saudi Arabia: The fastest growing economy

Saudi Arabia is considered one of the top 10 fastest-growing economies in fintech, digital content and e-commerce. Saudi’s fintech industry is booming. This is largely due to the significant digital transition the nation has seen over the last year or two, as well as Saudi Arabia’s 2030 vision. LEAP helped in boosting the economy, making Saudi one of the top 10 fastest growing economies in the world and the fastest growing.
The Arabic-Speaking Robot

Envision speaking with a robot who can talk in the local dialect of Saudi Arabia. The robot is Sara, and she was released to the public during LEAP 2023. Sara, who was created in collaboration between Saudi Digital and the QSS firm, can also dance and answer questions. A built-in camera utilizes AI to distinguish a person or object in front of her, and she begins greeting individuals in front of her with the phrase “Hi Sara.” What we witnessed through this magnificent robot was definitely a tremendous leap toward the future.
Remarkable Investments

Saudi unveiled investments worth more than $9 Million to support future technology, digital entrepreneurship, tech startups and emerging companies in the KSA. Further to that LEAP 2023 attracted more than $ 2.43B in tech for startups. Google, IBM, Microsoft, Huawei and many more global companies participated in the event as investors. LEAP 2023 created a loud noise which pulled many investors to invest in Saudi Arabia including major global tech giants such as Google, IBM, Microsoft, Huawei etc. Oracle also joined the bandwagon by announcing an investment of $1.5 billion in Saudi Arabia. With so many investments being boosted in the Kingdom, we are sure it will enhance the Kingdom’s position as the largest digital economy in the MENA region. This seems to be in line with the country’s 2030 vision.

LEAP held a competition to design theme-related merchandise for 2023, with the winner receiving a limited edition collection under their name, which will be printed and sold during LEAP 2023, along with a grand prize of 10,000 Saudi Riyals, and, most importantly, recognition across all Leap platforms. On December 16th, Isa Pantami was announced as the proud owner of the award and honor.
Additionally, as creative designers, we couldn’t help but notice the astounding sustainable toolkit at LEAP 2023. The toolkit consisted of a calendar that was printed with little ink on compostable coffee cups. Even though only a few materials were required to create the calendar cards, they turned out beautifully, were easy to read, and were useful. How inventive and sustainable was that!
Conclusion
We can confidently conclude that Leap 2023’s main takeaways revolved around technology, innovation, investment, and the future. The world experienced a historic tech event over the course of four days. We’re extremely eager and excited to see what LEAP 2024 will have in store for us!
It was such a privilege to be able to attend the biggest and best tech event of the year. We’re astounded by where technology is taking us and what the future beholds!

US Mint ‘Gold Disks’ Once Made for Oil Payments to Saudi Arabia
One of the things we find most exciting about reporting on the numismatic marketplace is coming across those things we either didn’t know beforehand or finding obscure and unusual numismatic items. Just recently we came across one such item, gold disks produced by the United States Mint for ARAMCO oil payments to Saudi Arabia after World War II.
The Coins that Weren’t
“In Saudi Arabia, gold coins have always been important in the monetary system. For years, in fact, paper money was unacceptable, and to pay royalties to the government, Aramco once flew kegs of both gold and silver coins to Jiddah. In 1952, when the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) was formed, the first coin issued was a Saudi sovereign – a gold coin equal in weight and value to the British sovereign – that was later demonetized and today sells for about $124.
To collectors, however, the most interesting Saudi gold coins weren’t coins at all; they were “gold discs”. Similar to coins, they were minted by the Philadelphia Mint in the 1940s for Aramco, and bore, on one side, the U.S. Eagle and the legend “U. S. Mint, Philadelphia, USA” and, on the other side, three lines on the fineness and weight. They looked like coins, they were used as coins, but, technically, they weren’t coins.
In the 1950s, numismatists were puzzled by these “discs” until-in 1957 – the story emerged in The Numismatist. Aramco, required to pay royalties and other payments in gold to the Saudi government, could not obtain the gold at the monetary price fixed by the United States so the U. S. government specifically began to mint the “discs” – actually bullion in coin form for these payments. In 1945, for example, the mint turned out 91,210 large discs worth $20, and, in 1947,121,364 small discs worth $5, according to The Numismatist.
Because most of the discs were melted down for bullion, or later redeemed for the Kingdom’s gold sovereigns, the discs are interesting additions to art collections. But care is necessary as counterfeits are common.”

On April 14, 1991, the New York Times printed an article by Jed Stevenson on the “disks” in reference to several that were to be sold by Stack’s in an upcoming auction in May of 1991. Below are portions of that article.
“Sometimes coins are minted for the strangest of reasons. Some Saudi Arabian bullion coins, several of which will be auctioned by Stack’s early next month, are a prime example.
The coins were struck in Philadelphia by the United States Mint in 1945 and 1947 to satisfy the obligations of the Arabian American Oil Company, or Aramco, which had been set up in Saudi Arabia by four American oil companies. The company was obliged to pay the Saudi Government $3 million a year in oil royalties and its contract specified that the payment be made in gold.
The United States dollar at the time was governed by a gold standard that, at least officially, made the dollar worth one thirty-fifth of an ounce of gold. But the price of gold on the open market had skyrocketed during World War II.
For a time the Saudis accepted payment in United States currency, but by 1945 they were insisting that the payments in gold be resumed. Aramco sought help from the United States Government. Faced with the prospect of either a cutoff of substantial amounts of Middle Eastern oil or a huge increase in the price of Saudi crude, the Government minted 91,120 large gold disks adorned with the American eagle and the words “U.S. Mint — Philadelphia.”
Aramco paid for the minting and the bullion. The coins were shipped off to Saudi Arabia.
These bullion coins weighed 493.1 grains, slightly more than a troy ounce, and were 91 2/3 percent gold and 8 1/3 percent copper. The fineness was that of the British sterling system then current in the Middle East. The United States standard was only 90 percent gold.
Most of the coins disappeared. The bullion coins were crated and shipped to Bombay, where the $35-an-ounce American gold was sold for $70 an ounce. Most of the coins were melted into bars and later sold in Macao.
In 1947, Aramco contracted for 121,364 smaller bullion coins with the same design, but weighing just 123.27 grains. Those coins actually saw some popular use in Saudi Arabia and traded for about $12, or 40 silver Saudi riyals. But the popularity declined after Swiss and Lebanese counterfeiters began striking coins that were similar but less valuable.
In 1951, Saudi Arabia began minting its own gold coins and melted down most of the remaining small and large bullion coins from the United States Mint, restriking them as Saudi coins.”

ALBW Roleswap AU...thing?
Trying to write about this idea where it's Hyrule that got devastated and so Link seeks help from Ravio and Hilda in Lorule. Long post, but here's what I've written about it. I don't think I'm gonna do anything more substantial for it, but it's fun writing this.

ALBW AU: The Appointed Knight and the Feral Hero
Among the realms created by the Divine mothers, two were tied like the two sides of a coin - both fair kingdoms, with a royal family who protected the sacred relic, Triforce. The Triforce was the sum of the Goddesses’ powers left in these realms, and was even said to be able to grant wishes, leading some to seek its power...unbeknownst to the guardians of the Triforce, it also serves as the cornerstone of their respective realms. No one knows what would happen if the Triforce was broken in some form, for it has never happened before…
As mentioned, the Triforce was left in two particular realms, so close and yet far from each other. The realm bathed in warm sunlight was called Hyrule, while the realm under the cover of soothing darkness was called Lorule. Without knowing of it, the denizens of these two realms prospered similarly to each other. But they were never able to meet, save for when a slight distortion in time and space would show times and places through mirrors and reflections. Only a passing mystery, and were it not for a grievous calamity, perhaps there would never have been a time when Hyrule would need aid from Lorule…

The clamor of war rang loudly throughout Hyrule Castle. The castle was besieged by terrible forces, slavering monsters and twisted ghouls, howling as they clashed with the soldiers of Hyrule. Men shouted and attacked, hoping to defend their kingdom to the last. However, this was not where the real battle was to be found. In the chaos, there was only one place of stillness - the castle sanctuary, where the princess stood and her knight stood against the demon king, who had risen again. Behind the two protectors of the kingdom, the Triforce shone with a radiant light. “Hand over the Triforce,” Ganon rumbled, hands flexed around a trident. The princess stretched out a hand, tapping into her magical heritage. Link readied his blade and shield - they would never let this monster ruin the world with the Triforce’s power. Never.
The battle began, trident slashing, magic weaving, sword and shield parrying. Link and Zelda fought desperately against the strength of Ganon, who shrugged off their attacks as though it could only annoy him. With a roar, Ganon swatted away Link, the young Hylian’s slight frame getting thrown into the wall with force to crack his bones. Zelda cried out, but she did not waver - even as Ganon lunged forward to lay his hands on the Triforce, she spun around and reached for the relic herself.
“Oh goddesses, protect us!” Zelda wished with all her heart, but even as her words tapped into the Triforce’s power, Ganon’s own hand had reached the relic.
Even while bloodied and bruised, and screaming from the effort, Link got up, trying to move, desperate, as Ganon wished for Hyrule’s destruction.
The two wishes, opposite to each other, warred within the activated relic. Link tried to run, to reach for Zelda even as the Triforce shattered with explosive power, with blinding light pouring out of it.
In those terrible last moments, Link saw the princess turn to him, her form becoming rigid. Ganon too, had stopped - and Link found his own consciousness dimming, burning with only one thought. He had failed his home.

The sun was yet to rise and all was still in the dark hours preceding dawn.
Or so it was supposed to be, if it weren’t for the angry yells of a woman and a sound of scurrying feet.
The village Blacksmith groaned and hauled himself up from his bed, drearily wiping a hand across his face as his wife rushed into the room.
“Now what is this ruckus all about!?” the Blacksmith complained.
“The stinking thief is back! I told you to report it to the castle, but no, you just had to wait for proof! Well, here’s the proof you want!” the hassled woman said sharply, and she grabbed hold of her husband’s arm and fairly dragged him outside, causing a string of complaints. She ignored the fact that he was barefoot and still in his sleeping clothes and hurried him into the cold air of the early morning. She paused very briefly to grab a fresh torch, and continued along. When she stopped, the Blacksmith was not in the most agreeable mood, but even he could see the damage.
The pots they used for storing water and grains were smashed, and their little garden that had once been full of promising vegetables had been ransacked. But even with the messy scene one could see paw prints in the dirt.
“What was it?” the Blacksmith asked, taking the torch from his wife. He knelt to take a closer look at the destruction.
She sniffed and crossed her arms. “I wasn’t sure - I just heard the sounds of a pot getting smashed and I rushed on over here. I only caught it running away, but it looked beastly, all matted fur and glowing eyes - ugh!”
It would be no match for you in your state, the Blacksmith thought, and he hid a grin. Keeping a straight face, he stood up again and said, “Well, I’ll call on our neighbor to help. No need to alert the Castle.”
She gave a disbelieving snort. “That lad is good for nothing but lounging around!”
“But still, he’s the appointed knight of the realm. Go on inside dear, that is enough trouble for one morning,” the Blacksmith said.
After putting on work clothes and making sure that everything was secured, the Blacksmith walked on over to a house on a hill, keeping his eyes peeled for any lurking creatures. However, upon reaching the house, the man gave a groan - of all the mornings he made this trip, today was the miraculous day the appointed knight was not sleeping in. The house was dark and a piece of paper was tacked to the door. The paper read:
“If you’re looking for me, I’m at the Castle!” - Knight of the Realm, Ravio.

Morning came and went, the sun’s rays bringing cheer and light to the land. Within the Castle’s kitchen, the maids and cooks were bustling about, preparing food for lunch. But in the middle of all this activity, a boy was sitting still, snacking on an apple as he idled the time away.
“Surely you have business to do, Ravio?” one of the exasperated cooks asked, watching Ravio take another apple from the kitchen’s stores and eat it.
“I’m in the business of filling my energy up after an early morning training!” Ravio said, grinning as much as he could with a mouthful of apple.
“...right,” the cook muttered. Sure, Ravio had been in the castle before dawn’s light, but all the staff saw of him was him taking a nap in the knight’s training room.
A page popped into the castle kitchens, and seeing Ravio, marched up to him. Ravio’s grin slid off his face as he saw the page’s gleeful look. He knew what that meant.
“Her Grace, Princess Hilda, commands the Knight of the Realm to the Counsel Room!” the page said as loudly as possible. The nearby kitchen staff snickered as Ravio stood up and wiped the apple juice off his face.
Ravio might not fear monsters, but he had a healthy fear of his closest friend.

"I tell you, your Grace, something has been ferreting around, stealing food and making a ruckus. The missus reckons it’s some sort of beast from what she saw. Maybe a wolf? But then again…"
"There are no wolves in Lorule."
"Exactly!"
"Well, wolves or no wolves, if it is disturbing the peace our appointed knight of the realm should be looking into it," Princess Hilda of Lorule said.
Her crimson eyes flicked over to said knight of the realm, even if he wasn't acting like it. Ravio might have looked the part, wearing armor stamped with the royal sigil of Lorule. It was an impressive enough sight that most never minded the lack of a sword at his back. However, instead of standing at duty, he was slouching, idly tugging at his scarf and wishing the audience would be over.
Hilda cleared her throat and tapped her staff on the ground, making Ravio jump nervously. As carefree as he was, he did not like testing Hilda's temper.
"Yess, your Grace?" Ravio asked.
"The Blacksmith brought his problem personally to the castle, Ravio. And I say, you must look into it this time," Hilda said, emphasizing her last two words.
Ravio groaned. Hilda was annoyed that the Blacksmith had to bring this problem up personally. Okay, so he was the knight of the realm, but that did not mean he had to solve every problem his neighbors had, right?
Then again, it seemed like a monster was involved.

The bushes underneath the trees rustled, and as Ravio followed close, he saw a pair of eyes looking out at him from the shadows. They glowed as they caught the light, and Ravio hesitated - human eyes did not glow like that, which could only mean this was a monster.
He quickly grabbed his Hookshot, and fired - the claw shot through the air. The beast leapt clear, but was too slow by just a second and caught a glancing blow. Ravio heard a yelp, and some footsteps going away. Ravio gave chase - even a glancing blow from a Hookshot was enough to give the most hardened monster some pause. And a pause was all he needed for another shot, and whatever his faults, Ravio had a good eye. Again the Hookshot pierced the air, and this time he scored a direct hit. Ravio knew it from the way the Hookshot had struck.
He hurried after the beast and came into the circle of trees, where he found something lying limp on the ground.
"Got you," Ravio murmured to himself, grabbing his bow. He readied an arrow at the beast, and was about to loose the projectile when the beast twitched and groaned - but the groan did not sound at all beastly.
Ravio dropped the bow and came close - yes, now that he was near he could see a hand peeking out from underneath some clothing. Perhaps a humanoid monster? But in the next moment he heard a soft whisper, and the creature went still. Ravio dropped to his knees beside the figure and turned him over, gasping at what he found. The "monster" was a lad his age, covered in a dirty old cloak. He couldn't see much of the boy's face as it was covered in grime and dirty blonde hair that spilled over one side of his face, but it was definitely a human.
"Hey! Can you hear me?"
All he got as a response was a sigh. Ravio's blood went cold, remembering how the boy had gone still. Ravio dropped his head onto the boy's chest, and listened hard - it was faint, but there was breath and a heartbeat within him.
Moving quickly, Ravio pulled up a bottle of Red Potion and carefully tipped it to the boy's lips - he was unresponsive at first, but when Ravio put a drop of potion to his lips, the lad's tongue licked it away. Very, very carefully, Ravio put a small amount to the boy's mouth, and he swallowed it. In this way, the boy finished the bottle of red potion, which brought back some color to his face.
"Hey, hold on, okay? Stay with me, here," Ravio said. He slung the boy's arm over his shoulders, and putting his own arm around the boy's hip, he stood up. The boy's head leaned limply into Ravio's shoulder, and Ravio fought the urge to sneeze - the guy smelled bad - like he'd been sleeping in the wilds and rolled through mud, kind of bad.
The lad was dead weight, and Ravio had a hard time pulling him along. It was with relief that Ravio heard the Blacksmith calling.
"Ahoy! What have you got there? The beast?"
"Nah, I clobbered the beast good, it should stay away. But I found a stranger, he clearly needs help," Ravio reported. The knight's normally jolly tone was urgent and the Blacksmith knew he wasn't goofing around.
"Alright, here I go! Phew, this one needs a bath," the Blacksmith grunted as he scooped the boy up easily.
"And a good meal - he feels almost dead," Ravio panted, relieved at having the weight off his shoulders.
"Bother, the house is full of weapons to be shipped - we should put him in your house, yeah?" the Blacksmith said.
"Mine!?" Ravio said in dismay.
"Of course. You helped him, you have to see it through," the Blacksmith said.
"Oh, I guess. He better pay rent," Ravio muttered.
For all of Ravio's words he was anxious for the boy and was relieved when the Blacksmith put him into his own bed.

The boy wandered back inside, shrugging off his cloak. Ravio looked up with a smile and then gasped in surprise - with the grime wiped away, he could have sworn the face he was looking at was his own.
Well, not quite - the stranger's hair was blond and his eyes were blue. Also, he had seriously dark bags under his eyes and hollow cheeks, like he had missed many good meals and nights of sleep.
"Whoa - wow, this is a shocker - talk about seeing your twin," Ravio said.
The boy looked blankly at him.
"…look .are you really just speechless with shock all the time?" Ravio asked.
The boy shifted his feet uncomfortably.
"Well, nothing for it. Here, maybe some food will loosen you up. You look faint with hunger," Ravio said.
The boy nodded gratefully, and dropped himself into one of the chairs at the table.
Ravio brought out a plate, filled with goods from the castle - bread, butter, fried eggs and apple slices. He had a feeling that the boy was hungry, and he was right - though the lad tried to restrain himself for politeness, he gulped down the meal as if famished. Ravio busied himself with cleaning his kitchen, which was a little dusty.
“Well, you look much better now that you had a bite or ten in you,” Ravio said as the boy set down his spoon and fork with a sigh.

"Well Ravio, have you considered one thing?"
"What?" Ravio asked, shifting uncomfortably at seeing Hilda's raised eyebrow.
"That maybe…you're talking way too much to give space," Hilda said tartly.
"Hey!" Ravio said in indignation. Hilda didn't show any outward signs of amusement, but Ravio knew her long enough to know that her eyes were smiling at the joke. It almost made the little jab worth it.
"Anyway, I shall go see this stranger, see if I can loosen his tongue," Hilda said.
The response however, was far more dramatic than the two expected. On seeing Hilda enter the room, the boy's eyes widened, and he hurriedly dropped to one knee and put his hand on his chest in a knight's bow. Hilda and Ravio traded glances.
"Please stand, good sir. I heard from Ravio about your appearance…but please, tell us more about yourself," Hilda said.
The boy raised his head, but looked down again and sadly shook his head. He opened and closed his mouth several times, but no words came out. He raised his hands and folded them in front of his throat.
"Ah, so you cannot speak…I'm sorry to have asked it without consideration," Hilda said.
The boy shook his head as if trying to reassure her there was no offense.

A stone statue stood inside the blasted courtyard. Even petrified, the beauty of the strange lass was not marred at all - her form perfectly captured in rock. She would have looked lovely if it weren't for the expression of horror on her face. The wolf circled the statue, and Ravio read a great sadness in Link's blue eyes.
Ravio drew close and saw, among the petrified waves of the lass's hair, a crown, and her dress bore a banner displaying a royal crest similar to Lorule's.
The wolf sat down, facing the statue, before raising his head and giving off a lonely howl.

Aaaand that's it. I have a few more ideas to toss into this (Link and Ravio searching for the lost Master Sword of Lorule? Hilda facing off against Ganon?) but I highly doubt I can add anything more weighty to this. I don't even have a proper explanation for why Link turns into a wolf (though in my mind, what's happened to Hyrule is a similar situation to the Twilight, where time has stopped and the souls of Hylians are left as wandering, dazed wraiths.) I might post other writing scraps if I feel like it?

Disclaimer: it’s hard to comment on a book smack in the middle of a long series… Especially when I never wrote up my thoughts on the first three. I’m trying to keep my thoughts limited to just this book

The world building in this series is phenomenal and Glow picks right back up to connect some pieces explaining the connection between the fairy and human worlds and gives us more information about the other kingdoms
We finally get the backstory of Slade/Rip, which is creative and satisfying
 We are teased with a growing Rissa subplot that is just divine… And I’m sure sets us up for some interesting things in the next one
Auren/Slade are 🔥 🔥 🔥— their connection evolves both physically and emotionally. Slade has nudged ahead of Casteel as my current book boyfriend. I love the reveal of his additional powers as well
 The camaraderie and teasing between all of the sidekicks provides needed levity and makes you feel like you have these wonderful imaginary friends
Dislikes:
The Queen Malina stuff feels a bit forced and I think it is late in the game to try to de-villain her. In this book, you see why she stays in the series but I feel like the stuff could’ve been introduced sooner?
I would have liked to see more character development of the townspeople living near The Rip— what are their thoughts and what the hell do they do with themselves?
 It doesn’t quite make sense to me that Slade has to re-stabilized The Rip so often?  He must have had a long-term plan for that. 
Is it bad that I miss Midas a little bit? We have other villains to contend with, but I would’ve love to hear more about all of his dirty dealings— even if told through flashback
It has a traumatic kick in the gut ending. I take away a fractional star because I have to wait until next year to hear what the hell happens! Poor Slade!
Are we really not gonna see her ribbons again? They were so much of her personality.  we need her ribbons. 
Will I read the next one? Oh yes— within 24 hours of its release for sure

The Looney Tunes Video Show is the first official Looney Tunes home video series, offering a true presentation of the classic characters. The liner notes on the tapes describe it like this… “An all-star anthology of cartoon classics! Welcome to The Looney Tunes Video Show - just one in Warner Home Video's all-star 7-volume anthology of some of the funniest footage ever filmed!”Despite the series being advertised as a series of 7, only three volumes of this series were ever released in the United States. The remaining 4 were released in Canada and European markets such as the United Kingdom.
The tapes were presented in a similar fashion to how the cartoons were shown on television through local stations or through The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show on CBS. We would get used to watching Looney Tunes shorts on “shuffle mode”. This was before the age of streaming services where the general public would usually binge a show in chronological order.
According to Greg Method, “Even with their somewhat high price tag, the three Looney Tunes Video Show volumes would prove to be popular in both the rental and sell-through markets, and within three years each collection would sell between ten to twelve thousand copies. The videos would later be reissued at a more reasonably priced $14.95 in March 1989 and remain in print for another decade.”
For this post, I will be covering the first three volume of the series. Compared to the later releases, even before the Golden Collection and Platinum Collection series and even The Collector’s Edition VHS series, these tapes have are full of variety, even more than Boomerang’s current rotation of the shorts.
The cartoons were transferred by telecine from 35mm prints onto 1-inch videotape. The quality is slightly better, though the colors would usually appear as faded. It starts with a still title card with the video title and a number indicating the tape’s volume number (each tape would have a different color background).
Reminder, I won’t be reviewing on every single one of the cartoons, and all Warner Home Video tapes up until 1998 would showcase only their post-1948 shorts (and their pre-1943 black and white cartoons).

Volume 1 starts right away with a classic Bugs Bunny outing, Devil May Hare, that would be common on all Taz themed VHS and DVD releases. The selection is overall very good. It highlights on just about all the marquee characters. Birds of a Father, an early 60s Sylvester and Sylvester Jr. outing is a nice change of pace until we get to The Ducksters. Definitely a fan-favorite Daffy and Porky short that puts their polar opposite personas to great comedic effect in this quiz-show parody short. Putting a more gag based short in the middle with Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote was definitely a smart move. Afterwards, we get 3 straight Friz shorts (right after 2 back-to-back McKimson and Jones shorts). Room and Bird takes a different take on the Tweety and Sylvester formula as both try to avoid the Hotel Inspector. Ant Pasted is an underrated Elmer Fudd outing because while he isn’t hunting, he just wants to have a 4th of July but he is invaded by a group of ants led by a Harry Truman caricature. Closing off the tape is the Oscar-nominated Speedy short, Mexicali Shmoes, as he outwits Jose and Manuel, two cats who were originally crows in the short Two Crows from Tacos but were redesigned.
Volume 1’s selection is definitely a great hour-long starter tape for Looney Tunes collectors and for the video series in general.

Volume 2 continues the variety with some oddities. It starts off with a later Daffy Duck solo cartoon directed by Arthur Davis, for the first time since 1949. Then a Porky and Miss Prissy oddity. Surprising this includes a Sylvester and Speedy short from the DePatie-Freleng era, and it was their last pairing before Daffy replaced him, and the fans know they are the least popular. All Fowled Up, one of those shorts when Foghorn is paired up with Henery Hawk, and Henery wins. Then, we have a classic and hilarious Bugs and Yosemite Sam pairing on the Klondike. Next up, is a one-off directed and solely animated by Robert McKimson with a newsreel style. Closing it off is a Pepé Le Pew cartoon set in the French Alps. In this one, a burglar paints a white stripe on the cat plus a chase across the snowy mountains, and an ending that leaves you holding on.
Volume 2 may be hold back by one short, but the variety is still present and just about all of them are rare findings.

Volume 3 doesn’t start off strong compared to 1 and 2 as it begins with a Rudy Larriva directed Daffy and Speedy short, but it is definitely one of the rarest shorts in physical media if you are not from the UK. Double or Mutton, another rare one with Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog which is a nice change of pace from the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote shorts. Feline Frame-Up is a nice follow up on Chuck Jones’ Marc Anthony and Pussyfoot series with the addition of Claude Cat, and the conflict is amped up well. Next is a classic Bugs Bunny outing with Playboy Penguin, as they embark on a road trip to the South Pole. Next up is A Fractured Leghorn where Foghorn Leghorn and an unnamed black cat both try and catch a worm for different reasons. Then it’s another Chuck Jones favorite, Scaredy Cat, as Sylvester takes on a silent role with Porky Pig but he steals the show with his comedic timing. Closing the tape is another Pepe le Pew cartoon, and it is his last one. Set at the Louvre and it provided for Chuck and Maurice Noble a lot of funny sight gags.
Volume 3 starts off slow but it has some strong weight with classic and rare favorites.
Final Thoughts
Overall, The Looney Tunes Show Volumes 1 to 3, as the first Looney Tunes home video series, are a great start for Warner Bros. expanding out the brand onto a different medium. Volumes 1 and 3 are definitely the strongest offering classics like Devil May Hare, The Ducksters, Zipping Along, Ant Pasted, Feline Frame-Up, 8 Ball Bunny, and Scaredy Cat. Volumes 2 and 3 offer some rare selections that wouldn’t get a remaster until seen on MeTV and HBO Max. Because later VHS tapes highlight a single marquee Looney Tunes character, these tapes manage to make room for just about every single one of the major characters, with some one-offs/supporting characters shorts in between. Like how the shorts played at random on The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show, the tapes’ presentations are just excellent and well-balanced. Again, variety is present. Even the two DePatie-Freleng era shorts are an alright demonstration showing how inadequate they are compared to the Termite Terrace era of classics pre-1964. And in the United States, it won’t be until The Collector’s Edition or the Golden Collection until we have a viewing experience like this. If you ever want to start your Looney Tunes VHS collection with the post-1948 cartoons, this is a strong recommendation.

One of the important things you need to keep in mind with fairy tales, in my opinion, is that colonization is a huge factor to take into account when trying to place a fairy tale variant and its actual cultural “source”. 
I was looking up reviews online about a book/deck created by Yoshi Yoshitani last year which use folk stories and fairy tales (it looks very nice and there is a lot of work put into it, none of this is to shade). In a commendable choice to include diverse origins, there are versions in this particular work that sometimes create confusion for readers. Some are easily understandable for me as someone who studies/teaches them (like why The Nightingale says both Chinese and Danish), but without sources of where the stories were adapted from, people who don’t know have commented here and there that they were understandably confused with some choices. 
Beauty and the Beast is included and the origin threw me off. The depiction is very expected for the story, with the Beast more similar to the Disney version than the Villenueve version, but the origin given is Chinese. And that opens a whole can of worms that is more difficult to unpack than just The Nightingale  → Hans Christian Andersen. 
You see, there is a variant of Beauty and the Beast that is considered to be Chinese of origin. And I say “considered” because, again, colonization and evangelization play a huge part in the printed versions of these stories sometimes. 
The popular “Chinese version” of Beauty and the Beast was compiled in the late 1800s by Adele M. Fielde. Sources vary on which book exactly, but editions of Chinese Nights Entertainments from the early 1900s that are openly available have the story in them, and there are sources claiming that the earliest edition is from 1893. That story is called The Fairy Serpent. 
Some people theorize that said story could have been influenced by a story in the The Panchatantra called The Enchanted Brahman's Son, which many consider one of the first known written versions of an Animal Bridegroom category story. 
But here’s the thing. It’s very likely that upon publication of her book, Fielde edited a Chinese story to be more like the western Beauty and the Beast that, by that time, was already popular and had been adapted several times. 
It could, of course, also be that the Chinese interviewees that Fielde compiled stories from had been influenced by any of the previous versions. It is not uncommon, the same happened to Berta Elena Vidal de Battini in Argentina and to Laura Gonzenbach in Sicily. The difference is that Vidal de Battini and Gonzenbach were interested in linguistics and culture, whereas Fielde was a missionary. 
It is known of Fielde that, and I quote: “she initiated Bible women’s work, training native women to go out as evangelists and Bible teachers. During her 20-year tenure in China she established schools, wrote curriculum, and trained some 500 Bible women”. Considering the way in which she writes about the people who told her the tales, how she claimed that they “could not read” and that she had chosen her stories from a bigger number picking out those that were “less intelligible to those who are unfamiliar with the beliefs and customs of The Middle Kingdom”, I think it’s safe to say she edited her versions, much like Andrew Lang and others. 
So, basically, what is most often advertised as the “Chinese version” of Beauty and the Beast (and the one Yoshitani adapted, if we compare the two) isn’t actually a written Chinese variant (a different case would be, for example, Ye Xian and Cinderella) but the adaptation of a missionary of a story she claims was told to her by unnamed people from Guangdong. 
Considering that, by the time this was published, Villenueve’s and Beaumont’s versions had been published and adapted for 100+ years, I don’t think it’d be remiss to be cautious when calling this a “predecessor”. I’m not saying there aren’t Chinese folktales that could be, but the one named and quoted, as it is, is dubious. This is particularly complicated for a work that is, with a lot of care, putting together a compilation that is meant to be diverse in origin. 
Furthermore, Yoshitani’s adaptation removes the serpent altogether (what previously tied that version to Panchatantra and adaptations of Cupid and Psyche like d’Aulnoy’s The Green Serpent) and also changes aspects to make it more similar to the popularized Beaumont version. 
For example, in the translated version of Panchatantra that is most available (a double translation from German to English, which also means potential trouble), the way in which the serpent becomes a man is like the way it happens in Villenueve’s version, as well as in later stories, but the bride of the serpent never leaves his side and acts dutifully towards him throughout. 
Villenueve involves the promise that Beauty makes for her return and the Beast in danger of dying as a consequence of the broken promise, something that comes directly from Cupid and Psyche (The Green Serpent also has it). 
Beaumont removes Beauty’s responsibility, her father is sick because of her departure and her sisters are the ones trying to keep Beauty in the house, breaking the promise.  
Fielde’s version, however, has the girl going on an errand to find water far away and upon returning, finding the serpent dying of thirst, throws it in the water and then he’s transformed. 
Yoshitani combines Beaumont’s with Fielde’s: the girl goes back to her father who’s sick and, upon returning, finds the serpent dying of both loneliness and thirst, throws it into the water and is transformed. 
So, basically, someone could read the 2020 version and say “this Chinese version seems like The Original, Villenueve must have used this” but there are layers upon layers of edition over them, some influenced by colonization, others by publishing appeal, others by combining what the compiler knew with what they want to represent, etc. 
The problem is that a lot of things that we might find to be little details could be a sign of the imposition of Euro-centric symbols upon other cultures. In our example (which is one of many things), we should think about how this idea of Beauty leaving the serpent to return to her father, as a simplification of the myth Villenueve was working with, influences a story that didn’t have this idea of the repenting bride in the first place. 
ANYWAY. Be mindful when you quote fairy tale “origins”, is what I’m getting at. If you are going for native folk stories, try to find where the version you have was compiled in and if there is a written trace to its culture of origin. I applaud people who want to include stories from other origins than just Europe, but be mindful of not imposing over them Euro-centirc perspectives, symbols and values. 
I’ve already had enough with YA authors playing the re-telling game to last me a lifetime. Let’s be more careful than that.

Do you have a link to your thoughts on the CES letter? Because I'm sure plenty of folk have asked you about it. I'm, struggling.
The CES letter has been mentioned to me a few times in asks, but I don’t recall being asked to respond directly to it. 
Before getting into it, I want to make you aware of this post about Faith Transitions, I think it may be useful to you. 
I read the CES letter many years ago, probably the original version, it’s changed a lot since then. I think the CES letter is sloppy, and twists quotes, uses some questionable sources, and frames things in the worst possible way. It’s basically an amalgamation of all the anti-Mormon literature. But many of the main points of the CES letter are important and correct, even if the supporting details aren’t.
In a way, the CES letter has done the Church a favor. For a long time, Elder Packer insisted that anything which isn’t faith-promoting shouldn’t be taught. As a result, most members of the Church were taught a simplified version of Church history, leaving out anything that is messy or difficult. Although those things could be found if someone was looking for them, I found many of them simply by reading Brigham Young Discourses or other works of the early church. 
With the internet, Elder Packer’s approach to history turns out to be a bad one. This information is out there and now most members learn about it from sources seeking to destroy their faith. One response to this has been a series of essays where the Church talks about some difficult subjects.

I’m not going to go through all the claims & challenges of the CES letter, but let me address some of the main ones.
1) There are errors in the Book of Mormon that are also contained in the 1769 edition of the Bible.
From the more faithful point-of-view, Joseph recognizes these passages, such as those from Isaiah, and knows they've already been translated into English and copies them from his family’s Bible. The non-faithful point-of-view is that Joseph copied these verses from his family Bible and tried to pass it off as his own translation.
2) DNA analysis has concluded that Native American Indians do not originate from the Middle East or from Israelites but from Asia.
This is correct. The Church has an essay which admits this and then spends a lot of time explaining how genetics works and one day we might find some Middle East connection. I find the Church essay convoluted as it goes through many possible (and unlikely) reasons for why no DNA of the Jaredites, Nephites or Lamanites has yet been found in the Americas.
3) There are things in the Book of Mormon that didn’t exist during Book of Mormon times, or in Central America (assuming this is where the Book of Mormon takes place), such as horses, chariots, goats, elephants, wheat, and steel.
This is also correct. Maybe the translation process was using a common word in English for a common item in the Book of Mormon. Maybe these are errors. Maybe it’s made up. 
4) No archeological evidence has been found for the Nephite/Lamanite civilizations.
Correct. When it comes to archeological evidence, it's true that we haven't found any. For one thing, we don't know where the Nephite & Lamanite civilizations are supposed to have taken place. If you don't know where to look, it's easy to have no evidence. Perhaps Nephites & Lamanites didn’t actually exist and that’s why there’s no archeological evidence. The Book of Mormon does seem to do a decent job of describing geography of the Middle East before Lehi & his family boarded the boat for the Promised Land.
5) Book of Mormon names and places are strikingly similar (or identical) to many local names and places of the region Joseph Smith lived in.
This seems like a funny thing to get hung up on. First of all, it’s not very many names that are similar. Secondly, many places in the US are named for Biblical places & people. If the Book of Mormon people came from Israel, it makes sense they did something similar. For example, the word Jordan is in the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and in many places in America. 
6) He points to obscure books or dime-novels that Joseph Smith might have read and the similarities between them and the Book of Mormon. 
Those similarities are mostly at the surface level. To me it doesn't seem like Joseph plagiarized any particular book, and these specific books seem to not been very popular so difficult to say Joseph, who lived on the frontier, actually read them. Funny how no one from that time period thought the Book of Mormon resembled those books, probably because they hadn’t heard of them. But Joseph did hear and read a number of stories and some of that phrasing or whatever of the time influenced him. Think of songwriters, they create a new song then get accused of plagiarizing because it's similar to another popular song. Even without intending to, they were influenced by things they heard. 
7) The Book of Mormon has had 100,000 changes.
Most of the "100,000" changes to the Book of Mormon were to break it into chapters & verses, to add chapter headings, or to add grammar such as commas and whatnot. There are some changes to fix errors that got printed but differed from the original manuscript. And there's been some clarifications made, but these are few in number. By claiming "100,000" he's trying to make it seem like there's a scam being done. It's easy to get a replication of the first Book of Mormon from the Community of Christ and read it side-by-side with today's version. I’ve done that and occasionally there’s a word or two here or there which differ, but overall it's mostly the same.
8) There were over 4 different First Vision accounts
True. Over the years, the way Joseph described the First Vision changed. I think different versions emphasize different aspects of the experience. I don’t find them to be contradictory. Oh, and the Church has an essay about this.
9) The papyri that Joseph translated into the Book of Abraham has been found and translated and it’s nothing like the Book of Abraham.
This is true. The Church has an essay about it. The Church now says that the papyri inspired Joseph to get the Book of Abraham via revelation, much like his translations of the Bible weren’t from studying the ancient Greek & Hebrew. It is a big change from what the Church used to teach, that this was a translation of the papyrus. The papyri has nothing to do with the Book of Abraham, and the explanations of the facsimiles in the Pearl of Great Price don’t match what the scholars say those pictures are about.
10) Joseph married 34+ women, many without Emma’s consent, some who had husbands, and even a teenager. 
This all appears to be true. Emma knew about some of them, but not all. As for the married women, they were still married to their husbands but sealed to Joseph (I know this is strange to us, but this sort of thing was common until Wilford Woodruff standardized how sealings are done). 
Polygamy was illegal in the United States. Most people who participated were told to keep it secret. So of course there’s carefully-worded statements by Joseph and others denying they participate in polygamy.
The salacious question everyone wants to know is if Joseph slept with all these women. We don’t know, but a DNA search for descendants of Joseph has taken place among the descendants of the women he was ‘married’ to and none have been found. But still, if he wasn’t doing anything wrong, why is he hiding this from Emma? 
11) The Church used to teach that polygamy was required for exaltation, even though the Book of Mormon condemns polygamy. 
This is accurate. The Church says polygamy was part of ancient Israel and so as part of the restoration of all things, polygamy had to be restored, see D&C 132:34. Now we no longer say polygamy is required to get to the highest level of the Celestial Kingdom.
12) Brigham Young taught Adam-God theory, which is now disavowed by the Church.
True. Joseph Smith didn’t teach this and John Taylor & Wilford Woodruff don’t seem to have any time for this teaching. It’s a thing Brigham Young was hot about and taught, but seems a lot of the church didn’t buy it as it was discarded after his death. 
13) Black people weren’t allowed to hold the priesthood until 1978, despite Joseph having conferred it to a few Black people during his life. 
Very true and very sad. This and the Mountain Meadows Massacre are the two biggest stains on the Church’s past. There is a Church essay on Race & the Priesthood. The ban appears to have begun with Brigham Young and he developed several theories to justify it, and these explanations expanded over the decades and bigotry was taught as doctrine. The Church now disavows all explanations that were taught in the past.
No reason for the priesthood ban is put forward in the Church essay other than racism. The past leaders were racists and that blinded them to what God wanted for Black people. There’s a big lesson in that for LGBTQ teachings of the Church.
14) The Church misrepresents how Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon. 
The accounts of Joseph Smith putting a seer stone in a hat and reading words from it, that's part of the historic record. Quotes about it don’t make it to our Sunday School lessons, but if you go back to the Joseph Smith papers and other accounts, it’s there to read. Joseph also used the Urim & Thummim, and wrote out characters and studied them, but he seems to have most favored the stone-in-hat method. I think the main problem here is the Church in its artwork and movies does not depict this, and therefore most members are unaware until they see anti-Mormon literature. Why does the Church not show Joseph looking into a hat? Because it seems magical and weird to modern people. But how much weirder is it than he put on the Urim & Thummim like glasses and could translate that way, or he wrote out these characters from some extinct language and was able to figure out what they mean?

A number of the main points in the CES letter are true (even if explanations/supporting details in the CES are problematic). Some of the main points have simple explanations and don’t seem like a big deal. Others challenge what the Church has taught. To its credit, the Church put out essays by historians & scholars, with sources listed in the footnotes, addressing several of these controversial topics.

Religion is meant to help humans make sense of their world and our place in it. Most religious stories are metaphorical but end up getting taught as literal history and, in my opinion, the same is true of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And that’s why the CES letter has power, it points out things aren’t literally true but were taught by the Church as factual, and the CES letter shows us part of our messy history that the Church tried to hide.

The story of Adam and Eve can’t literally be true. It doesn’t fit our evolutionary past, but it’s meant to make our lives important, God created us and we have to account to Him for our choices, and it’s important to find someone to go through life with. We can say the same of Job and the Book of Ruth, fiction with a purpose. 
While there are some real events included in the Bible, much of what’s written is there to teach lessons, culture, and give meaning to life. Jesus taught in parables so at least he was upfront that they were stories that contained morals.
Can I believe the same about the Book of Mormon, that it’s inspired fiction with meaning I can apply to my life, or must it be literally history to have value?

I went through a massive faith crisis while attending BYU. I had access to materials that told a different story of this religion than I’d been taught (the sorts of things in the CES Letter) and it threw me for a loop. 
It felt like the floor of faith I had stood on shattered and I fell with no way to stop myself. After I had a chance to process through the things I was feeling, I looked at my shattered faith and picked up the parts that were meaningful to me.
I had lined up my faith similar to a line of dominoes. If the Book of Mormon is true, then Joseph was a prophet. If Joseph was a prophet, then this is the true church. If this is the true church, then...
This works until it doesn’t. Once a domino topples over, it starts a chain event.
Now I look at principles and concepts and decide if they’re meaningful to me. 
I love the idea that we can spend eternity with the people we love most. 
I believe we should be charitable and loving to others. 
People on the margins need to be looked after and helped and lifted. 
Poor people deserve dignity and the rich to be challenged. 
We have a commitment to our community and we all serve to make it better. 
All are alike to God, we’re all loved and God has a grand plan for us. 
Those who passed away can still be saved through the atonement of Christ. 
Those are all principles I find in the Bible and Book of Mormon or at church and I find Love flows through all of those. 
This new approach works for me. I don’t have to believe or hold onto problematic teachings. I can drop them and still hold the parts that I find valuable. I can reject the teachings and statements which are bigoted, homophobic, transphobic, racist, ableist, misogynistic. Prophets can make mistakes and still have taught some useful things.
That little voice of the spirit and what it teaches and guides me to do, I trust it over what Church leaders say. Overarching principles are more important to me than specific details for how this gets applied in the 1800′s or 1950′s or Biblical times.

I truly hope some of what I’ve written is helpful.
There’s no use pretending that the CES letter doesn’t get some things correct. It’s also helpful to understand it’s not just trying to share truth, but has an agenda to make the Church look as bad as possible.
What about the things the CES letter is correct about? 
Has this church helped you learn to connect with the Divine? 
The Church has some very big flaws, but also has some big things in its favor. Some of its unique teachings are very appealing and feel hopeful and right. 
Can you leave the Church and be a good person and have a relationship with God? Absolutely. 
I also know this church is a community and it’s hard to walk away cold-turkey with nothing to replace it, without another network to belong to. It’s as much a religion as it is a lifestyle and circle of friends. 
Are there parts you can hold onto? Parts you can let go of?
You have a lot to think about and work through.

he hummed in response as you glared and shifted away, however that made you accidently press up against Asahi’s arm
you whipped your head toward him as soon as you made contact
yall locked eyes for a solid second before starting to stutter and stammer 
the only thing that made you stop was Sugawara’s snickering again
you swatted at him in revenge and shifted to the middle of your seat
you glanced back at Asahi to see him already looking at you
both of you were nervous so you offered a small smile to ease the tension
he gave one back and you both tried to pay attention to the rest of the movie

WORDS OF SHAKESPEARE: The Return of a very Supa Occasion! (Special guest: Richard)
On the 19th of June 2021, my old friend, Maiwel alumni and acting veteran Richard and I went to the Supanova Comic and Gaming Convention at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush Bay. The 2021 edition of Supanova was the first time in two years that it was held in Sydney as last year’s edition was called off due to “You Know What” alongside Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.
To implement with the health and safety protocols, the layout of the convention was more smaller and laid out to comply with physical distancing measures as well as entering via a QR Code.
When I first entered the Dome Exhibition centre seeing all of the convention goers and Cosplayers of superheroes, sci-fi and anime. I kneeled down and proclaimed “HALLELUJAH!” as many of the convention fans from NSW were starved of a taste of a full-on convention since the world went upside down early last year (Outside of the smaller edition of Oz Comic Con titled OCC POP UP which was held earlier in March of this year).
Supanova contained a teeming amount of Cosplayers from DC Comics and Marvel Superheroes, Rick and Morty, Steven Universe, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Doctor Who and Power Rangers, Cosplayers from anime such as My Hero Academia, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Naruto and Disney films including Mary Poppins, Mulan and The Little Mermaid, Cosplayers from Video games including Overwatch, Pokémon, Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy, Sonic the Hedgehog and Undertale, Cosplayers from Web animations for instance including RWBY, Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss as well as various furry Cosplayers and cosplays of my childhood such as Pingu. There was also a very innovative cosplay such as an attendee dressed up as a giant functional Nintendo Game Boy System! The costumes looked absolutely well designed and spot on as I asked kindly for photos!
A number of RWBY fans and Cosplayers noticed me wearing Jaune’s Pumpkin Pete Hoodie. I must admit, I’d make a pretty good Jaune cosplayer if I could get his armour, his “Crocea Mors” sword and shield and dye my hair blonde!
There was also the Cosplay stage across from The Dome where there was a competition for the very best and innovative costume, as well as seminars of the bigger name Australian celebrities.
Speaking of the celebrities, Due to the international borders being closed until either the middle of next year or when the majority of the population of Australia is vaccinated, Supanova relied heavily on home grown talent from our country for example (but not limited to) Manu Bennett, David Wenham, Josh Lawson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Georgia Haigh, Nicholas Hamilton and frequent Supanova Attendee, John Jarratt who is famous for portraying the infamously ominous and frightening Mick Taylor from the horror movie franchise “Wolf Creek.” I still remember being scared straight to high heaven watching the movie when I was very young due to Jarratt’s portrayal of the heinous horror character next to Bill Skarsgard’s portrayal of Pennywise the clown in Stephen King’s IT Chapters one and two, but alas Jarratt was a very generous and friendly larrikin!
There was a lot of great activities to do including the “Black Widow Obstacle Course” where you had to complete a number of tasks within the time limit in order to win a prize, Star Wars Lightsaber demonstrations and tutorials and the “Battlecry” LARP (live action role playing) battle displays and demonstrations where you could fight your friend or one of the friendly Battlecry veterans such as Sammy Owen from the recent Medibank Commercial with a rubber sword or axe. This was a very great debut for my LARPING alter ego, “Boar-Head: The Sworded Brawler” and I am very interested in joining a Battlecry LARP group in the future!
There was a very colourful display of artwork, comics and prints at the Artists Alley, with various comic book artists from across Australia such as (but not limited to) Queenie Chan of Fabled Kingdom, Anthony Christou of Luminous Ages and Camillo Di Pietrantonio famous for illustrating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IDW comics.
The Fabulous Wonder Mama also made a guest appearance as she is a superhero representing the LGBT Community.
The Artists Alley also had tables of independent artists selling comics, prints, bookmarks and badges available. Looking at the artwork made me feel like I was at an Art Museum for the fans of pop culture!
For those who want to spend some dough, there were also stalls selling new and vintage comics and trading cards, Pop Vinyl Figures, Animation cells from cartoons and movies of yesteryear, Action figures and gaming consoles from the eighties and nineties, LGBT pride flags, rock and metal band t shirts and apparel and Plushies from Japanese anime and video game franchises such as Pokémon and Digimon. There were also games to play such as Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch so fellow gamers can smash their friends out of the arena! For the con-loving geeks who were hungry, Dominos had a stall selling various flavours of pizzas and garlic bread and the canteens in the Sydney Olympic Park Dome sold fish and chips, bagels, sushi and coffee. Byron Beef Jerky also had a traditional stall selling all kinds of flavours such as Teriyaki, Chilli and the infamous “Devil’s Doo-Doo!” (Not for the faint hearted!)
Whilst Supanova Comic and Gaming Con in Sydney was a fun event for the inner nerds, parts of the con had to be completely modified and or removed in order to be healthy and safe for example, the discontinuation of handing out free goodie bags containing the guidebook and map of the layout of the con and other cool things making both the map and guide digital exclusive via the Supanova Website.
Another notable absence was the Australian Wrestling Federation wrestling ring where the pro wrestlers of the aforementioned promotion would host a series of three wrestling matches per day and the wrestlers would hand out free autographs, this really kind of hurt me as a fan of pro wrestling for sixteen years but it’s better to be safe than sick. At least the Battlecry LARP displays and demos filled in its place!
For the seminars, gone are the days of staff handing the microphone to the audience for the Q&A’s as they have to lineup behind the microphone in order to ask an interesting question to the guests.
I also didn’t like how some parts of the convention was a bit squashy when you first entered, in the artist’s alley and in some of the stalls. Like I said, we are in a receding health crisis and we need to wear masks, be physically distant, wash our hands and get the much needed vaccine shot against the you know what!
All in all, Supanova had a amazing return to full flight in Sydney despite the scare earlier in the week and the lack of International guests. I was starved of a full on convention throughout the year of misery last year and as a person on the autism spectrum, cons are such an amazing way to make new friends and to show out your inner geek, nerd,fanboy or whatever via cosplaying, gaming, greeting guests, purchasing artwork and so on and so forth all in a very safe measure!
I give this year’s Supanova in Sydney a 7 out of 10. This edition was absolutely different compared to last year’s and I have strong confidence that next year’s edition in Sydney and abroad will have well known and beloved international guests back to the much loved Comic and Gaming convention next year, just in time for Supanova’s 20th birthday!
