twenty six: career aspirations for the faithless anxious youth
when i was taking my primary school leaving examinations in my last year of primary school instead of studying after each paper during the month-long examination crunch i'd come home, stick some cheese on a slice of white bread, and watch masterchef australia on the living room tv. i had discovered the masterchef franchise just a few months before that while flipping through the channels available on the cable tv my dad had gotten off a friend, and sampled a great number by the time exam season rolled around. masterchef america was too dramatic. masterchef uk was too british. but masterchef australia? masterchef australia was like falling asleep on the train to the sound of someone muttering trigonometry formulae under their breath. masterchef australia was ordinary.
growing up i defined myself by a slew of interesting and equally useless traits. having been told by my parents that i had picked up a pen with my left hand first but been taught to write with my right because both of my parents are right-handed, i clung to my misplaced ambidexterity until the age of eight. then i was the main character of a novel i would start on a microsoft document, write two sentences of, and promptly abandon. after that, i was the american trapped in the body of a tropical island-state. then i was angry. then i was young.
youth is one of those things that's so tied up with capitalism and the way the world markets ourselves to ourselves that you can't really talk about it without launching merrily down the path of sin again. therefore i will not launch down the path of sin tonight, because i spent half of the day reading a horrible webtoon and my eyes hurt, and instead discuss its parallel path: the anecdote. when i was twelve i wanted to be the first twelve year old to publish a novel. then i stopped being twelve, so i wanted to be the first thirteen year old. the first fourteen year old. the first to stand on the podium while the world shed alligator tears on their knitted socks, holding up the golden prize. social media, as expected, only made matters worse. i wanted to be the youngest interesting person on twitter, and for most of my teenage years, apart from the times when i felt self-hatred and inadequacy chip away at my crooked, yellowing teeth, i felt that i was.
but we just keep getting older, don't we? you, me, the old man who sits on the park bench near school each evening and feeds the pigeons to chopin. we just keep moving forward. i'd be upset if the path weren't so long, i'm convinced there's something interesting lying up ahead. i'm standing on a conveyor belt at the airport. i'm a piece of luggage waiting to be taken home. i'm a pair of headphones.
this afternoon i microwaved gelatin powder for a milk-yogurt pudding recipe i found on the internet last night but only half of the gelatin melted for some reason, so i dumped everything in a small pot and tried to get the other half to give. it did not give. up until the very end, when i dumped everything in a larger pot and simmered it for a few terrible minutes, there remained a misshapen chunk of soft, slightly malleable gelatin stuck to the side.
and yet the pudding turned out fine! how strange and unexpected. how bizarre. how much gelatin can you use in a week? try me. i'm going to build a sweets empire.
i think there's something wrong with the way those in power run the world and i'm going to say something about it. today i spent too long in the shower again. i was watching water vanish down the drain and thinking about how to break into heaven. in the end, i didn't come up with a plan, but i know which direction to walk in. this is progress. this is the beginning of something good.
i started this blog because i wanted to do a summer writing project, but something came up and now i have two summer writing projects. what the fuck? what do i do now?
i'm bad at juggling. in the spring i was tossing a baseball up and down in one of the library's study rooms when it fell too far forward and i, in reaching out to grab it, cut my hand on the top of the glass divider on the desk. it didn't leave a scar but it hurt for days and everyone who asked me how it'd happened laughed at me like i was a joke that had been told at the wrong party. i'm really bad at juggling. but just this once, i think we'll try to keep both baseballs in the air for a while longer, at least until i fall forward into another sheet of glass. because i don't want to be british or dramatic or ordinary. i want to be the cheese sandwich. i want to be the remote controller balanced on the edge of the table. i want to be the pigeon at the park the old man doesn't expect to chirp back, who chirps back anyway. thanks, i'll say. thanks for everything.

Data linkage
Data dichotomies Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden wrote for the FT about the UK's new approach to data outside the EU this week - which managed not to say what this new approach would actually be (especially for GDPR), and prompted comments that the narratives that privacy had dominated discussion and pitted innovation and privacy against one another weren't quite right... ICO baby Though perhaps the next Information Commissioner does need to make a distinction between innovation and privacy, as medConfidential and others have pointed out. Dowden's article kicked off the appointment process for the next Commissioner. (I interviewed the current one in 2019.) Doing so in an article behind a paywall and with no version on GOV.UK isn't a particularly great example of open government...
Open season But then it's not been the best of weeks for open government in the UK, with the news it's been censured by the Open Government Partnership, prompting a letter coordinated by the UK's Open Government Network (on whose steering group I sit). Though there remain some good examples of open government in the UK, and... Open day Tomorrow is Open Data Day, with lots of events planned. Speaking of events... Data Bites We held our seventeenth Data Bites this week, with some rugby-related fun to kick off and some very important budget analysis (which may have contributed to this), before four brilliant presentations. One of those was about better data visualisation, which was also the subject of...
Chart hits and misses This Computer Weekly article looking at good and bad #dataviz during Covid features a quote from me. Speaking of bad #dataviz... Mistake and fail pie My wonderful IfG colleagues are holding me somehow responsible for this particularly bad BBC Wales pie chart, which left me shocked. Another shocking fail which came to mind this week was... Johnson's new department The time when the UK government briefly renamed the business department to something quite unfortunate (though it turned out to be a flop). It wasn't quite the job Alan Johnson expected, but then you don't really get to apply for Cabinet roles...
Odd job Whereas you can apply to work in the Cabinet Office's new Information and Data Exchange, another new unit which there doesn't appear to be much information about. Like a number of recent developments (the Central Digital and Data Office, the integrated data platform) we have to comb press releases, minutes and job ads to find out what's going on (#opengovernment). There's also a deafening silence on... Certifiable The government's (welcome) review into vaccine passports. I wrote something about that for the IfG this week. And if you've not had enough of me... Strategic thinking I'm speaking at a Westminster Forum event next week, on the National Data Strategy. Something that was announced a few months ago, by Oliver Dowden.
Have a good weekend
Gavin

Ready To Wear, Ready To Play
As previously noted, there’s been yet another change in direction for the Attract Mode blog… which I have dubbed Version 2.8 Final CE EX Λ Core Plus Alpha. BTW/FYI. But yeah, been posting on Twitter, a lot. So much so that you may have missed something, so here’s a recap!
Note: was originally going to cover everything tweeted throughout the month, but because there’s so much to cover (and February’s short)… am guessing bi-weekly might be the way to go. Am also going to present things mostly in order.
K, enough chatter: at the very top is another fine example of a Famicom being the ultimate in fashion accessory (via nintendu). And here we have, not designer threads but designer plastic (via gamefreaksnz)...
Speaking of plastic, Sega (or someone who got Sega’s blessing, or maybe not even) made Super Monkey Ball figures? Guess so (via magimacaque)...
I was under the belief that, if I truly wanted to make an impact with the relaunch of the Attract Mode Twitter, I couldn’t just post one single piece of Klonoa fan art, but two...
And I only have one example of Cuphead fan art, but it’s the one that counts (via jothelion)...
It was Kyle who helped kick the Attract Mode Twitter’s rebirth into high gear, with the reveal of his Nintendo Power covers. So to help replay the favor, I must insistent that everyone purchase the hard copy of RPG_Friends (which I first mentioned here)...
Nothing makes me happier than seeing such a dense assortment of Japanese game stuffs (via peazy86)...
... Yet that being said, I also believe less can be more, plus a nice breeze while playing Secret of Mana is... well... nice (via sixteen-bit.tumblr)
These gamer chairs perfectly embody Japanese sensibilities when it comes to furniture, plus are a total 180 to the junk they peddle in the US (via shmups)...
Time for another excellent toco toco vid, this one features your fave old school Capcom illustrator, and mine, Akiman…
youtube
There's so much I love about this interview with the creator of Hong Kong 1997, whose goal was "to make the worst game possible”. Though this picture of the guy is near the top of my list...
I love these kooky kids, thinking they could possibly get away with stealing an entire Final Fight arcade cab (via videogamead)...
Yeah, I feel the same way kid (via tvgame)...
"This is Jesus. He lives inside my Neo Geo MVS cabinet. He was there when I got it. He is glorious." (via arcadephile)...
The pathos that is Sub Zero at the bat, in four modded screenshots(via lanceboyles)...
The pathos that is the Kachō interacting with kids, in just three YouTube screengrabs (via gaijira)...
And the pathos that is Splatoon 2, via two screengrabs and the piece of fan art that resulted (via lunaticobscurity)...
Though in addition to pathos, Splatoon is also filled to the brim with intensity (via thewaragainstgiygas)...
Welcome to VIOLENT CITY (via shmups)...
Also, STAY CHILL (via paperbeatsscissors)...
Not that any band in which music is performed via guitars hooked up to Famicoms is all that typical to being with, but this one is most definitely not typical (via miki800.com)...
youtube
This "what the hell is going on exactly" illustration has motivated me to finally Wario Land a spin at long last (via it8bit)...
Remember Absolutely Rose Street, the Beverly Hills 90210 meets Degrassi meets Wayne’s World-esque show that was actually an infomercial for the Sega 32X in disguise that I wrote about a little whiles ago? Well here's ad for it (via oldgamemags)...
I'm a total sucker for old Japanese video game mags, primarily ones featuring models/statues on the cover (via miki800)...
Another cover to an old Japanese game rag, this one featuring the very first Metal Gear; I wonder if this slightly cutesy take helped to inspire the Metal Gear we meet in Snatcher (via mendelpalace)...
Here we have a page from an 11 page comic, done in a single sitting, for an event that celebrates various pairings of Solid Snake/Otacon, one that's called Snot Week for whatever reason (via millionfish)...
I want this woman to be my mom (via cyberfights)...
Am obsessed with this image of a man playing Xevious in the middle of a desert that's clearly fabricated and clearly from the 80s (via shmups)...
mendelpalace sez: "This picture gives me anxiety" and I feel exactly the same...
This is comparable to my own morning commute, except for the lack of floating cherry blossom petals and various other differences (via tightenupthe)...
Spring is almost here, which means it's time for a new wardrobe, which really means it's time to get new PaRappa attire (via miki800.com)...
If a glitched Nintendo logo when booting up a Game Boy looks fashionable to you, you're in luck (via gameandgraphics)...
Tho if a glitched Game Boy Advance start up is more your style (via corruptionasart)...
Has anyone received this Mega Drive/Genesis chiptune album on a cart (described as a "16-bit VMU") yet? (via catskullelectronics)
Ever wonder what a 3 part symphony, one performed via 5 different Nintendo DSs and 5 different copies of Electroplankton, sounds like? Well wonder no more (via mendelpalace)...
youtube
And ever wonder what an Italian-based, US-born R&B, blues and disco singer (which is how Wikipedia describes Ronnie Jones) thought of video games in the year 1980? Again, wonder no more (via aestheticoftheday)...
youtube
The new DDR, which will record your performance and also add snazzy video effects, is my early contender for GOTY 2018 (via @Sega_AM2)...
youtube
I will never grow tired or bored of watching this run cycle, ever (via shmups)...
What appears to be a Nier motion study (via sixteen-bit)...
Sakura-ha (via rosscountertv)..
To commemorate the discontinuation of the Kinect sensor (via prostheticknowledge)...
Google Translate took the original Korean & translated it as: "Ittsumi! Maria", which @NotLikeFreddy re-translated as: "It's-a me, Mary-o"...
The medium of video games most certainly has many mountains to overcome yet, but there's little denying that we've made some progress nonetheless (via videofame)...
"I have to go now. My planet needs me.” (via sixteen-bit)...
Cuz it's been a while since I shared a gif from Sin & Punishment (via n64thstreet)...
The SNES & Genesis had cool accessories and all, yet I often wonder what it would have been like if 3D printers & Etsy were around back then...
Pretty much the cutest lil thing you'll see all day is this Genesis CDX hooked up to a 5″ Sony PVM (via decideweapons)...
“'Club Sega during the Snow' is a top-tier aesthetic, I think." (via pr0jectneedlemouse)
I love old VG sound team photos, especially when they double as old band photos, like Capcom's Alph Lyra here (via videogamesdensetsu)...
You all have no idea how happy I am to finally see a decent sized version of the flyer for Deadly Sport... again, no idea (via melvanainchains)...
Here's an illustration of Terry Bogard eating a hot dog (with the rest of his Fatal Fury posse chowing down as well)...
... Turns out, Terry's affinity for hot dogs is somewhat of a thing (via busterwolf)....
... Or, perhaps SNK as a whole are simply huge fans of hot dogs? (via meldowiseau)
I absolutely love this familiar, yet thoroughly refreshing take on Samus (via lady--peaches)...
And nothing new to report, as it pertains to @deimosremus's Metroid redesign, so am just going to continue staring at this some more...
Love Hultén is mostly known for their handheld creations, like the Pixel Vision, though I mostly dig their full-sized cabinet, the Kabin 1...
"Damn Tecmo never let Microsoft live that design down" (via sixteen-bit)...
Cuz I recently began replaying Breath of the Wild...got the Switch version for the gf on her birthday... some fan art (via it8bit)...
I've seen my fair share of comics with Sonic & Tails, but never one that addresses the debug mode from the original Genesis games (via vg-libary)...
Here we have two cats, from the game Jingle Cats, occupied with the fridge (via obscurevideogames)...
And here we have just one cat, from the Sailor Moon anime, occupied with an arcade game that I am unable to identify (via sailormoonreblogs)...
Can you believe the music video for @MissyElliott's Sock It 2 Me is over 20 years old? Crazy, I know...
Speaking of Mega Man, I guess I need to finally check out Mega Man Zero, cuz apparently X goes through some kind of religious conversion or something (via omnilunary)...
And here we have Cut Man, the one we all know (and love) from Mega Man meeting his Captain N doppelganger (via mewymarsher)...
I absolutely need this on a shirt or jacket (via @buzz_clik)...
It's always a thrill, seeing a fighting stick made out of tupperware in the wild for the very first time, isn't it? (via @silva_hime)
Yes. Fighting Layer is that game in which you jump off a folding chair to smash another one on the head of a gigantic falcon (via lordmo)...
Tonight’s episode: PINBALL ALCHEMIST (via tonights-episode)...
Here we have a Tumblr thread giving suggestions on how to access a seemingly inaccessible area of a hotel lobby; my fave, for perhaps obvious reasons, is the ring path/light speed dash combo from Sonic Adventure...
Am kinda hungry atm and feel like slicing & dicing some celery & onions, plus making some Julienne Fries; anyone got a copy of Sonic 2 handy? (via sonicthehedgeblog)
A. thanks to this fan art, I now know you can also play OutRun in Hokuto no Ken PS4! & B. great piece & all, but...still a shame that Alex Kidd is missing (via inspiredfatty)...
I've legit been staring at these rotating NES and SNES gifs all day long (via 3d-bear)...
These photos from the Dreamcast Mobile Assault Tour, circa the late 90s, right before the system's launch are very... and I mean VERY... 90s (via posthumanwanderings)...
"What will your next dream be?" (via 081594)
You know that UK/US reality show Undercover Boss, in which a billionaire CEO disguises himself as the new mailroom guy? Well there's apparently a version in Japan, with an episode starring the president of Taito (via @MMCafe_Prof)...
On Valentine's Day I came across a horror movies blog that presented various horror movie Valentines, including one for Jason Voorhees that references Friday The 13th for NES (via cameraviscera.com)...
Also, for Valentine's, my girlfriend made me pixelated chocolate; the pic does the blue hearts in particular zero justice, which look like plastic toys, but most assuredly are made of milk chocolate...
... And that’s it for now! The rest of February coming up in a few!

Disney has also acquired streaming rights of different production houses which means that you are going to have a good variety of content if you subscribe to Disney Plus. In this article, we are going to look at everything Disney Plus has to offer. Let’s scroll down.
Content is the most important thing to talk about while talking about an OTT platform. You are going to love the content available on Disney Plus if you have been a fan of Disney Content. There is a lot of family-friendly content to explore from different brands like Pixar, Marvel Studios, National Geographic, and Star Wars universe. You will also find some great content by the Fox network since it is owned by Disney. Most of the classic movies and TV shows created by Disney are available on Disney Plus. There is already a wide range of TV shows and movies of different genres available and this content keeps getting updated regularly with new series or movies rolling out. Disney makes its movies available on this platform soon after they are released in theatre. The Mandalorian, High School Musical: The Musical – The Series, Encore, Marvel Hero Project, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, Noelle, One Day at Disney, Togo, Timmy Failure, Stargirl, Artemis Fowl, Hamilton, etc., are some of the most popular movies and TV shows on Disney Plus.
If we talk about the availability of Disney Plus, it was initially launched in Canada, Netherlands, and the United States but the company has expanded its availability, and now it is also available in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, UK, and other European countries. In the USA this service can be bought in a bundle for $12.99 a month. The bundle includes Hulu (with ads) and ESPN Plus along with Disney Plus.
Supported devices are also something very important to look at while talking about a streaming platform. Talking about Disney Plus, it is available for all the Android and iOS devices and you can watch it either on your phone or tablet or your computer as this service is available on the web and in the form of an app as well. You can simply download the Disney Plus app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store and enjoy watching the great content after setting up your account. All the major smart TV manufacturers are also making Disney Plus available in their products. However, one thing that is worth noting is that you will be able to download the content from Disney Plus on Android and iOS platforms only. If you own a device like 4K smart TV, Microsoft Xbox One, Sony PlayStation 4, Apple TV, and 4K capable Android TV-based devices then you will be able to watch the content in 4K quality also.
There are a lot of OTT platforms available these days offering different content at different prices. If we talk about Disney Plus, it is available for $6.99 per month, which can be said as quite affordable if we look at the subscription rates of other streaming services. You can use one account on 4 different devices. Disney Plus also allows you to download the content on Android and iOS devices and you can watch it later.
Disney is a trusted brand when it comes to the quality of entertainment and if you are looking for some new content that you will enjoy watching with your family then Disney Plus is the right choice for you. This affordable service is easy to use and the latest content makes it one of the best among all OTT platforms.

Watch Top Gun Online: Where to Watch Tom Cruise’s 1986 Classic?
Tom Cruise is the most loved action star in the world. His name is right up there with legends like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. That’s an elite company to be in. And Tom Cruise has proved time and again that his valor is noteworthy. Widely famous for his action film sequences, Mr. Impossible started his journey thirty years ago with his action-drama Top Gun. And even though he’s still as loved, a lot of us need a reminder of his boyish good looks and killer smile.
And as the extremely late sequel makes its way to the screens, here’s how you’ll catch up on the first part:
Won’t find it anywhere on the popular sites
The issue you’ll face if you frequent popular streaming services is that Top Gun isn’t available on any of them. Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu, none of them have the movie. The first part released in 1986, directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Maverick is a pilot in the US Navy and the story follows him being forced to go to TOPGUN, a Naval Fighter Weapons School.
Iceman and Maverick will be back together, against each other!
In the sequel to be released, Val Kilmer will reprise the role of Iceman Lt Tom Kazanky. The first time around their dynamic was an essential component of the story. Although the movie received mixed reviews from critics, the movie was a profound success amongst the fans. The movie was Tom Cruise’s first step towards Hollywood glory.
Where do you watch it online?
If you’re living in Canada, you can find it on Amazon Prime. But in the US & UK, alternate options such as FuboTV and Sling are the only few streaming it online. Top Gun is airing on cable TV through the Paramount Network but online streaming isn’t that easy.
You can pay to watch it though!
The movie is available in standard quality for $2.99 on Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, Fandango Now, Vudu, Microsoft, Redbox, and AMC Theatres On Demand. And for $3.99, you can rent it on platforms such as Apple TV, DIRECTV, and Flix Fling.
Buy Top Gun Online
There are plenty of options if you are a die-hard action or Tom Cruise fan looking to keep this classic permanently with you. Buy the SD version on Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu for $7.99. HD version is available and ranges from $9.99-$16.99. If you’re looking for 4K, Apple TV an option to buy it at $9.99.
Fans are excited about the sequel!
The sequel was scheduled for release on 26 June but the pandemic has postponed it for now. Tom Cruise is back as Maverick and the rest of the cast includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris.
Jackson Henry. I’m a writer living in USA. I am a fan of technology, arts, and reading. I’m also interested in writing and education. You can read my blog with a click on the button above.

SSSC OPEN Badge : Webinars and Chat #23things DIgital
Okay reader, I have a confession I want to share with you.
Late last night I was paroozing my fabulous work on the 23 badges. 1....2....3...4...5......6.....7....8...9............( you get the idea).....22........WHAT 22? there should be 23! #23badges. The clue is in the title.
So, I took my time and looked through and realised that my witty, insightful blog on webinars and chat had gone....disappeared....wedi mynd, cabooshed.... so, please enjoy my Webinars and Chat blog - take 2.
I moved away from home and the lush green valleys when I was 17 ( I’m 40 now), I have lived all over the UK and now settled in Bonny Scotland, so as you can imagine, keeping InTouch with my family has always been important. I used to use SKYPE all the time. Every week I would log in 3 or 4 different times to skype my mum, dad, gran, grandparents, then when I had my children this became even more important because they wanted to see them grow. Now my children are pre-teens they communicate through text and video calls. We have what’s app, and I kid you not reader my children will FaceTime me either through facebook, video call me via WhatsApp or zoom call me from their rooms just to ask me what was planned for dinner....... We don’t live in a mansion, it’s not like you complete your step count for the day just moving between the east and west wing, we live in a humble semi-detach in a small village. So as you can imagine, I have had a wee bit of experience of video calling.
Now, bringing my blog back to the reason why I am writing it - evidence. So in March 20th 2020 one of my managers comes crashing into my room announcing that we have to pack all our personal stuff, book the leave, make sure that usernames and passwords are valid for systems x,y,and z and that the setting was closing because of COVID-19 ( or Corona). We had been expecting this but still, a shock. This meant that I was working from home, working in the education hub and having both children at home, working at different levels needing teaching and a husband who also is a key worker ( and a manager so he trumps me) AND I was still looking for a new job. OOOFFTT Meltdown Central!
Jumping forward 11 weeks and you will be pleased to say that I’ve not killed anyone. I am a little greyer and my waist has expanded but we are okay. We think that COVID-19 has sweeped through our house and we have recovered (this was before testing)....my apologies....I digress......
Since remote working we have utilised chat, video calling and webinars. We have been using Microsoft teams for work and school. VIdeo calls are always funny. These are the only times I put my makeup on and straighten my hair. Readers, you will be happy to know that I accepted a job which I had an interview through ZOOM.... Now this was funny as I was dressed tidily from the waist up, pj bottoms and fluffy slippers waist down ( I wanted to be comfortable). I have done a lot of professional learning and discussions and these have been through WEBINEX / ZOOM / Microsoft teams and Twitter. Having these tools at my fingertips have meant that I can still learn ( I am a visual learner, so being able to see something happening - like learning profiles and in the moment plannng in forest schools) which is developing my practice and engage with collegues and peers.
Aswell as using it for work, we have utilised it for our lives in lockdown. I dance twice a week ( I am no Darcy Bustle), this was a time which was my own. My fabulous dance teacher began doing classes via ZOOM. I swear, I have not laughed so much in my entire life. So good for your mental health. We also have ZOOM quizzes with family and a social organisation we are apart of. This is also good for your mental health and sustaining your social skills.
The evidence specification required me to discuss how I support others. I have actually done this a lot surprisingly. Some of my collegues have been sign posted to me to support them remotely, my fabulous in-laws are not very tech savvy, so I have had to talk them through how to use video calling and ZOOM so that they can still see us. Then lastly, my SCOUTING. Lockdown meant that scouts, cubs, beavers all stopped. Like us, our children need some normality so, working with my team we have succsssfully implemented weekly sessions. THe planning is a little different but the children love it! In fact, it’s Friday which means that its Scouts tonight (I’m not doing it this time). To get my leaders into this position took a lot of reassurance as for many of them it is the unknown. As lockdown doesn’t seem to be easing anytime soon, my next approach is to contact SCouting Scotland to see if they can do training for the adult leaders (I’m still working on my wood badge) via ZOom.... so watch this space.
I hope I have submitted enough evidence to be awarded the above badge, one last thing is GOoglehangout.... I had a look, we all had a look and agreed that we don’t need another platform ( it gets confusing) .
Early Years Educator signing Out.
