Most of what people dislike about Word is them just not knowing how to work it. Like the picture thing, someone in the notes mentioned, is a setting you can change with text wrapping. You can set margins and do page breaks and make headers and footers for any kind of document, bound or otherwise. You can design your own styles and themes for colors and fonts and different text levels.
The thing that blows my mind is when I get a document from someone that clearly has not one clue about how to work the functions, and I’m like, “…Did you…did…you…space all the words on this cover sheet using the tab and the space bar…? AND THE PAGE NUMBERS???” And it takes SO LONG to fix. I always want to send it back to them and say, “start over with a fresh doc and DO IT RIGHT” but I can’t bc if they knew how to do it right they would have in the first place.

Don't need a knight to guard the cave
Can't count the dragons that I've slayed
You can give it all you got
'Cause love is running through my veins
Oh, this lion can't be tamed
There's fire in my blood

Oh hey since I mentioned sci hub again
I'd love to hear people's stories about small things that radicalized them in benign ways. I'll start.
I was already pretty leftist at this point, but being associated with academia so long means I've gotten free access to a variety of scientific journals, software, and more for... Basically my entire adult life. On campus, all of those systems have automatic logins. But off campus, usually there's janky, half-functional systems associated with actually inputting your credentials into these sites. Scientific journals especially are really and at tracking logins, and oftentimes have to link back to your uni's generic login page, which they're bad at pinging. Software installation usually requires
So instead of using services that the university had already paid for, for me to freely use, like adobe, journal logins, and Microsoft products, I started using free equivalents. Sci hub, gimp, libre office, Ubuntu... Not because I was invested in open source and free access mentalities at the time, but because they were literally quicker and simpler to use.
And then I started thinking about all of the little bits of tech infrastructure I was using to access my "free" stuff.
Someone coded those systems.
Some tiny portion of a server is devoted to handling those pings an login requests.
Someone spent hours upon days of work moving office 365 and adobe from actual pieces of software that fully live on your computer into stripped down versions of themselves that now have to verify
Someone made the payment system for Nature.
So. Much. Wasted. Labor. Just to block people from already existing services. That have alternatives. That are as good. For free. And they can be free largely because they don't have all of the bullshit associated with locking them down and keeping them proprietary.
Tech and science are of course what I have the most experience in, but I feel like once you start realizing that in one sector, you start seeing it everywhere.
Anyways this is a barely focused unmedicated ADHD ramble but I'd love to hear other examples

DIY NaNoWriMo
Hi! If you still want to participate in a NaNoWriMo type challenge but don't want to support the AI nonsense happening over there, there are plenty of free alternatives!! Here is a simple spreadsheet I made to track my daily word count that you can also use/edit as you'd like (File -> Make a Copy or Download) and here is a much more in-depth one made by Alex Penland if you'd like more options for viewing your progress. TrackBear is an online tool for tracking progress on your writing projects that also lets you set word count goals. You can also set up leaderboards with your friends :) LibreOffice is a free alternative to Microsoft Office that includes documents, spreadsheets, and presentations if you're looking for a place to actually write/plan! Happy writing!

The main reason to use Firefox and Linux and other free and open source software is that otherwise the big tech monopolies will fuck you as the customer over in search of profits. They will seek to control how you use their products and sell your data. When a company dominates the market, things can only get worse for ordinary people.
Like take Google Chrome for example, which together with its chromium reskins dominate the web browser market. Google makes a lot of money from ads, and consequently the company hates adblockers. They already are planning to move to manifest V3, which will nerf adblockers significantly. The manifest V3 compatible chrome version of Ublock Orgin is a "Lite" version for a reason. Ublock's Github page has an entire page explaining why the addon works best in Firefox.
And Google as we speak are trying to block adblockers from working on Youtube, If you want to continue blocking Youtube ads, and since Youtube ads make the site unuseable you ought to want that, it makes the most sense to not use a browser controlled by Google.
And there is no reason to think things won't get worse. There is for example nothing stopping Google from kicking adblockers off their add-on stores completely. They do regard it as basically piracy if the youtube pop-ups tell us anything, so updating the Chrome extensions terms of service to ban adblocking is a natural step. And so many people seem to think Chrome is the only browser that exists, so they are not going to switch to alternatives, or if they do, they will switch to another chrominum-based browser.
And again, they are fucking chromium itself for adblockers with Manifest V3, so only Firefox remains as a viable alternative. It's the only alternative to letting Google control the internet.
And Microsoft is the same thing. I posted before about their plans to move Windows increasingly into the cloud. This already exists for corporate customers, as Windows 365. And a version for ordinary users is probably not far off. It might not be the only version of Windows for awhile, the lack of solid internet access for a good part of the Earth's population will prevent it. But you'll probably see cheap very low-spec chromebookesque laptops running Windows for sale soon, that gets around Windows 11's obscene system requirements by their Windows being a cloud-based version.
And more and more of Windows will require Internet access or validation for DRM reasons if nothing else. Subscription fees instead of a one-time license are also likely. It will just be Windows moving in the direction Microsoft Office has already gone.
There is nothing preventing this, because again on the desktop/laptop market Windows is effectively a monopoly, or a duopoly with Apple. So there is no competition preventing Microsoft from exercising control over Windows users in the vein of Apple.
For example, Microsoft making Windows a walled garden by only permitting programs to be installed from the Microsoft Store probably isn't far off. This already exists for Win10 and 11, it's called S-mode. There seem to be more and more laptops being sold with Windows S-mode as the default.
Now it's not the only option, and you can turn it off with some tinkering, but there is really nothing stopping Microsoft from making it the only way of using Windows. And customers will probably accept it, because again the main competition is Apple where the walled garden has been the default for decades.
Customers have already accepted all sorts of bad things from Microsoft, because again Windows is a near-monopoly, and Apple and Google are even worse. That’s why there has been no major negative reaction to how Windows has increasingly spies on its users.
Another thing is how the system requirements for Windows seem to grow almost exponentially with each edition, making still perfectly useable computers unable to run the new edition. And Windows 11 is the worst yet. Like it's hard to get the numbers of how many computers running Win10 can't upgrade to Win11, but it's probably the majority of them, at least 55% or maybe even 75%. This has the effect of Windows users abandoning still perfectly useable hardware and buying new computers, creating more e-waste.
For Windows users, the alternative Windows gives them is to buy a new computer or get another operating system, and inertia pushes them towards buying another computer to keep using Windows. This is good for Windows and the hardware manufacturers selling computers with Windows 11 pre-installed, they get to profit off people buying Windows 11 keys and new computers, while the end-users have to pay, as does the environment. It’s planned obsolescence.
And it doesn’t have to be like that. Linux distros prove that you can have a modern operating system that has far lower hardware requirements. Even the most resource taxing Linux distros, like for example Ubuntu running the Gnome desktop, have far more modest system requirements than modern Windows. And you can always install lightweight Linux Distros that often have very low system requirements. One I have used is Antix. The ballooning Windows system requirements comes across as pure bloat on Microsoft’s part.
Now neither Linux or Firefox are perfect. Free and open source software don’t have a lot of the polish that comes with the proprietary products of major corporations. And being in competition with technology monopolies does have its drawbacks. The lacking website compatibility with Firefox and game compatibility with Linux are two obvious examples.
Yet Firefox and Linux have the capacity to grow, to become better. Being open source helps. Even if Firefox falls, developers can create a fork of it. If a Linux distro is not to your taste, there is usually another one. Whereas Windows and Chrome will only get worse as they will continue to abuse their monopolistic powers over the tech market.

Gabriel Reyes is such a good concept as a character and a love interest, so have more headcanons because I’ve had such a good day today 😛
Reaper who sneaks around Talon HQ in order to find you everyday. No matter if it makes him late to team meetings or not
If you aren’t dating by this point, he excuses it by saying “ Moira/Widow/Doomfist was looking for you earlier. Don’t get your ego boosted..”
Ik lots of other people already say this but it’s such a good concept, he definitely moved you out of harms way
Being put on a dangerous mission? Suddenly your name comes straight off the list and he goes instead. A certain lackey is talking about how you need to be “taught a lesson for sucking up to him” ? They get taught a lesson instead ❤️
Oh boy! A secret admirer!! I sure hope it isn’t your emotionally constipated supersoldier coworker who spends a lot of the company card at Walgreens !!
On a more serious note, getting into a relationship him makes his silly simp behavior that much funnier
He won’t tell you, but if you ever see him sitting down and doing some office work, he secretly yearns for you to sit in his lap (he wraps one of those big ass super soldier arms around you)
Gabriel, who after somewhat unwinding his vigilante persona, becomes the most protective, caring version of himself.
When the mask comes off, his need to touch you activates. Cannot keep his hands to himself
Obviously he isn’t as relaxed as he used to be, so expect some average Reaperesque grumbling if your too clingy (ironic, it’s okay if he’s clingy, but for you it’s a problem 😒)
Sitting at home on the couch with him includes his oddly hilarious commentary to your favorite reality shows
“ Pinche tú madre… she knows he’s no good for her. Why do you watch this stupid shit”
Later that evening, after a shower, you see that the rest of the season is finished on Netflix
Never forgets the small things you say. You liked a certain food at a resturaunt? He makes sure that resturaunt stays open (it becomes the graveyard” where he sends people that are picking on you in the name of “spying on the enemy”)
You like iced coffee or bubble tea? He memorized your orders, even going as far as to keeping either a digital log or physical log, even both. (Sombra found the digital copy, it’s six pages in Microsoft word that goes into extensive detail of your preferences)
Speaking of food, he takes food allergies very serious.
He knows how it feels to be medically predisposed to issues, he never wants anyone to have their body malfunction if he can help it.
Beside his better judgement, he meets with Moira to see what can be done to get rid of food allergies. Then promptly leaves as she lists side effects.
If you aren’t interested in getting rid of them, he talks with the kitchen staff and tries limiting the amount depending on your allergy. Allergic to fish? No more grilled salmon. Allergic to shellfish? Shrimp Tacos immediately get discontinued. Lactose intolerant/Dairy Allergic? All of the dairy is to be replaced with alternatives immediately
I’ve been yapping too long, someone pls give me a fix idea

Quick lists of "Alternative" software/websites I use:
Firefox (as an alternative to Chrome): Especially for the ad blocking capability. Use on both Phone and Computer.
DuckDuckGo (as an alternative to Google): No longer the thing your paranoid uncle uses, now an actually good search engine with the lack of tracking being a plus.
Kubuntu (as an alternative to Windows 11): My current Linux Distro and the best for people leaving Windows for Linux for the first time. Also KDE is Goated now.
LibreOffice (as an alternative to Microsoft Office): Works with MS-office formats and is FOSS, great if you don't trust google but need office software.
GIMP (as an alternative to Photoshop) because fuck Adobe.
Kdenlive (as an alternative to Premiere) because again, fuck Adobe.
OpenStreetMaps (as an alternative to Google maps): Tends to update quicker and is more detailed because everything is done by volunteers on the ground.
Krita (Alternative to ProCreate): Great painting app.

Hii what is your best advice to younger adults trying to make it independently and make a living? In art, savings or anything you think of. Thank you in advance!
dont be too hard on yourself. its tough out there right now in regards to like everything regardless of what old people say. also this is going to be a lot so im slapping a read more on here
⭐️ first thing id recommend for anyone is to start figuring out a budget. figure out how much youre making monthly. keep all your food receipts for a month or two to see what youre spending on food. find out what youre paying for thats necessary like utilities and whats not
the goal for a budget (or at least mine) is to find a good balance of earning vs spending. im paying off my credit card right now because i ran through all my savings after we had to move last year but my goal used to be to save 1/4 of what i earned after bills and putting money into an emergency fund (usually an emergency fund is 3 months worth of expenses). but it depends on how much you can comfortably put away. if you can put more away do it. but if you never spend money and deprive yourself of joy youre going to burn yourself out regardless of what your job is
⭐️ if youre not already buy store brand for as much shit as you can. if its an ingredient i promise as someone who cooks and bakes you probably wont notice the difference. if its an actual snack it depends. again both from a money perspective and to boycott pro-isreal companies we get a lot of snacks from aldis and theyre awesome. i dont miss anything from mars, oreos etc when i have my chocolate coconut wafers
⭐️ if you have any subscriptions and you need to get rid of something you can probably cancel them. for *most* things theres some kind of free alternative. but again just like with a budget. there are going to be some subscriptions that make your life easier and while youd save money without them it would lead to extra work and burning out. ex willow has kofi gold because it has really cool extra features that help with running the shop. but for streaming services? im going to be so honest. both to save money and with how cheeky streaming companies (in a bad way) have been getting… you can find whatever you want to watch online for free
if you need to use anything from the microsoft office suite, but youre not required by youre job to specifically use microsoft, libreoffice is a free alternative that i actually like better. its what i use to help willow run their shop and its free
for art programs. if you still have photoshop switch. not just for money reasons. adobe is getting bold with what they can claim as their content and use from what people produce in their program. the switch isnt the easiest but there are a bunch of alternatives. some free some like csp offer one time licenses which are so much better than subscriptions. will has spent almost $2k on photoshop and after effects from using it as long as they have. when csp is $50 and they like csp better anyways. i also know of krita and fire alpaca which are free
⭐️ also theres stuff about being an adult that i thought you had to pay for but you dont? like for car insurance i went through an independent insurance agent and they found me a cheaper plan than i could find myself. i didnt pay the guy. they get a cut from the insurance company for finding them another customer. some banks or credit cards offer financial advising sessions to users. its boring but if you can get a copy of your health insurance see if they have any free shit on there thats available for you. my brother gets free doctor finding? like i can call them, tell them what specialist he needs and instead of me calling around to find one that can take him, they connect me with someone. my work offers 3 free therapy sessions (better than nothing) and free food that i take advantage of
⭐️ i think one of the biggest things that makes an impact for us is researching before buying stuff. sounds like a no brainer but you dont just want to find the cheapest deal. you want to find the best bargain, the best bang for your buck. whats the best quality thing you can get that you can also afford? itll prevent your from having to replace stuff all the time and by extension spending more than you need to. we have nonstick pots and pans that are scratched and starting to peel (which apparently can cause cancer??) that were cheap because of being on sale. now after looking into what makes quality cookware i know i should of just slowly bought stainless steel
⭐️ last big one. credit cards. unfortunately we need them so find one with a low apr and that offers decent cash back. use it up to like 20% of your limit and pay it off every month. focus on using it on things that will get you cash back so you can essentially get free money
im sure i could ramble more but this is already super long

Microsoft Word™ That is Installed On My Local PC: ALERT
Word: there is a problem with your Microsoft Account!
Word: you must login to your Microsoft Account to fix the problem
Word: your login attempt failed; reset your password
Word: we sent you a verification code on your phone; type it in
Word: password successfully changed!
Word: now login using your new password
Word: we sent you a verification code on your phone; type it in
Word: you are now logged in!
Word: ready for use
...so apparently the "problem" was that my godawful huge megastrong Microsoft password had expired? On a product that I have installed locally, that I do not use online, ever, for any purpose.
And Word would not let me edit a (locally stored!) document until I reset my password. Jesus fucking christ on a slowly rotating spit with drizzled oil and a nice dipping sauce.
Also, the first person who suggests Libre Office or any other Microsoft alternative gets growled at because SOME OF US are required to use their products and cannot switch.
It's just fucking insane how they punish their user base.

Hi, I wonder how are you creating your wip? Do you write it in google docs and then code it in Twine? I'm starting making my own and I'm looking for some technical tips
Hi! Thanks so much for the ask! It's always good to see new authors starting their own IFs. This might be a bit long so I'll put everything under a read more for those of you who aren't interested.
For me personally, I write in LibreOffice, which is a free alternative to Microsoft Office/Word. But, you can definitely use Google Docs or whatever other writing program you prefer!
As for coding, you can just code in Twine, but I like to code some as I write so I don't forget when to set certain variables. If you don't want to code anything in your draft, then I'd recommend at least leaving yourself reminders at places you'd like to add variables or when you want to have skill checks or anything else of the sort.
I should mention that a lot of people dislike coding in Twine, the code isn't set apart from the text visually and can be confusing for some, so if that's the case for you, I'd recommend checking out something like Notepad++ for coding and then copy and pasting everything into Twine once you're done.
If you do use Notepad++, and you're also using SugarCube, I'd highly recommend downloading and using this to add SugarCube as a custom language to the program so your code is easier to read. (You'll be able to select it as the coding language in Notepad++ after downloading and following the directions, though you may need to exit and restart the program before it shows up in the language list).
Some other great resources I use: The Twine Cookbook (of course), SugarCube Documentation or Harlowe (if you prefer), some templates (including the one I use!) [1] [2] [3], and w3schools tutorials for basics in CSS and JavaScript (assuming you don't know how to code in them already, if you do, that's great!)
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! I'm no coding expert but I have taken a few classes on Web Dev stuff in college so I know a thing or two.
Best of luck to you on your project anon!😊

hi I saw your post about Microsoft word, you suggested libreoffice but there's no mobile version and I prefer to write on mobile, do you happen to know of an alternative for mobile? unfortunately I'm stuck with Google docs for now, thank you for your time!
Unfortunately the only one I know is Collabora Office and I'm going to be honest with you, it kind of sucks. Part of it is the nature of mobile UIs and OS which are apparently hostile to saving anything in your device instead of a cloud.
Collabora Office does work but opening files is sometimes a pain. On the other hand, it is completely offline.
If anyone can recommend a good alternative that is offline I would appreciate help for both of us.

On Personal InfoSec
Been awhile since I've had one of these posts but I figure with all that's going on in the world it's time to make another one of these posts and get some stuff out there for people. A lot of the information I'm going to go over you can find here:
So if you'd like to just click the link and ignore the rest of the post that's fine, I strongly recommend checking out the Privacy Guides.
Browsers:
There's a number to go with but for this post going forward I'm going to recommend Firefox. I know that the Privacy Guides lists Brave and Safari as possible options but Brave is Chrome based now and Safari has ties to Apple. Mullvad is also an option but that's for your more experienced users so I'll leave that up to them to work out.
Browser Extensions:
uBlock Origin: content blocker that blocks ads, trackers, and fingerprinting scripts. Notable for being the only ad blocker that still works on Youtube.
Privacy Badger: Content blocker that specifically blocks trackers and fingerprinting scripts. This one will catch things that uBlock doesn't catch but does not work for ads.
Facebook Container: "but I don't have facebook" you might say. Doesn't matter, Meta/Facebook still has trackers out there in EVERYTHING and this containerizes them off away from everything else.
Bitwarden: Password vaulting software, don't trust the password saving features of your browsers, this has multiple layers of security to prevent your passwords from being stolen.
ClearURLs: Allows you to copy and paste URL's without any trackers attached to them.
VPN:
Note: VPN software doesn't make you anonymous, no matter what your favorite youtuber tells you, but it does make it harder for your data to be tracked and it makes it less open for whatever network you're presently connected to.
Mozilla VPN: If you get the annual subscription it's ~$60/year and it comes with an extension that you can install into Firefox.
Proton VPN: Has easily the most amount of countries serviced, can take cash payments, and does offer port forwarding.
Email Provider:
Note: By now you've probably realized that Gmail, Outlook, and basically all of the major "free" e-mail service providers are scraping your e-mail data to use for ad data. There are more secure services that can get you away from that but if you'd like the same storage levels you have on Gmail/Outlook.com you'll need to pay.
Proton Mail: Secure, end-to-end encrypted, and fairly easy to setup and use. Offers a free option up to 1gb
Tuta: Secure, end-to-end encrypted, been around a very long time, and offers a free option up to 1gb.
Email Client:
Thunderbird if you're on Windows or Linux
Apple Mail if you're on macOS
Cloud Storage:
Proton Drive: Encrypted cloud storage from the same people as Proton Mail.
Tresorit: Encrypted cloud storage owned by the national postal service of Switzerland. Received MULTIPLE awards for their security stats.
Peergos: decentralized and open-source, allows for you to set up your own cloud storage, but will require a certain level of expertise.
Microsoft Office Replacements:
LibreOffice: free and open-source, updates regularly, and has the majority of the same functions as base level Microsoft Office.
OnlyOffice: cloud-based, free, and open source.
Chat Clients:
Note: As you've heard SMS and even WhatsApp and some other popular chat clients are basically open season right now. These are a couple of options to replace those.
Signal: Provides IM and calling securely and encrypted, has multiple layers of data hardening to prevent intrusion and exfil of data.
Molly (Android OS only): Alternative client to Signal. Routes communications through the TOR Network.
Briar: Encrypted IM client that connects to other clients through the TOR Network, can also chat via wifi or bluetooth.
Now for the last bit, I know that the majority of people are on Windows or macOS, but if you can get on Linux I would strongly recommend it. pop_OS, Ubuntu, and Mint are super easy distros to use and install. They all have very easy to follow instructions on how to install them on your PC and if you'd like to just test them out all you need is a thumb drive to boot off of to run in demo mode.
If you game through Steam their Proton emulator in compatibility mode works wonders, I'm presently playing a major studio game that released in 2024 with no Linux support on it and once I got my drivers installed it's looked great. There are some learning curves to get around, but the benefit of the Linux community is that there's always people out there willing to help.
I hope some of this information helps you and look out for yourself, it's starting to look scarier than normal out there.

Hey, are there any alternatives for google.doc?
It depends on what you're using Google Docs for. If it's a word processor, I really love the Libre Office suite. It's got a match for everything in the Microcrap Office suite and it doesn't piss me off the way Word does. If you are using Google Docs for collaboration and sharing, it's probably the easiest and cheapest option, especially if you are sharing with people not on the same network and you want to have access to the same documents at the same time. If you don't need access simultaneously, you can ship a text document (doc/docx/odt/etc) via email and use track changes to identify who made what changes. Microsoft has One Drive, which is supposed to be good for file sharing, but it is not. It sucks and made me want to poke out my eyes with sticks.
Hope this helps.
