“An award named after Ruth Bader Ginsburg has gone to a slate of accomplished women since it was launched four years ago to honor the legacy of the late Supreme Court justice known for championing women's rights and liberal causes. This year is different.

Next month, the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation will present the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Leadership Award to four men and Martha Stewart. Among the winners are two convicted felons, the founder of right-wing Fox News, and Elon Musk.

Stewart, Musk, Rupert Murdoch, Michael Milken and Sylvester Stallone are the five "iconic" and "exceptional" recipients of the 2024 RBG Leadership Award, the organizing foundation said in a news release on Wednesday.

Ginsburg's family is blasting the foundation's selection of this year's recipients, saying the decision is an "affront" to the memory of the late justice and her values.

"This year, the Opperman Foundation has strayed far from the original mission of the award and from what Justice Ginsburg stood for," Jane Ginsburg, daughter of the Supreme Court justice, said in a statement.

The award was conceived in 2019 to recognize "an extraordinary woman who has exercised a positive and notable influence on society and served as an exemplary role model in both principles and practice." Past recipients have included Queen Elizabeth II and Barbra Streisand.

This year, "woman" has been dropped from the name of the award, and the criteria has expanded to include "trailblazing men and women" who "have demonstrated extraordinary accomplishments in their chosen fields," the Opperman Foundation said.

"Justice Ginsburg fought not only for women but for everyone," the foundation's chair, Julie Opperman, said in the news release. "Going forward, to embrace the fullness of Justice Ginsburg's legacy, we honor both women and men who have changed the world by doing what they do best."

The Ginsburg family says it was not informed of the changes in name or criteria for the award. It is pressing Opperman to remove Justice Ginsburg's name from the award "unless the original award criteria, as accepted by Justice Ginsburg, are restored," as Trevor Morrison, Ginsburg's former law clerk, wrote in a letter to the foundation's chair that spoke on behalf of the Ginsburg family.

Until then, Morrison said, the justice's family wishes "to make clear that they do not support using their mother's name to celebrate this slate of awardees, and that the Justice's family has no affiliation with and does not endorse this award."

"Each of this year's awardees has achieved notable success in their careers, and each may well deserve accolades of one form or another. But the decision to bestow upon them the particular honor of the RBG Award is a striking betrayal of the Justice's legacy," he wrote.

Most of the awardees' track records bear controversies and scandals rivaling their achievements.

Milken, an investment banker famous for creating the junk bond market, was arrested in the late '80s for securities fraud. After he was released from prison, he built a reputation on his philanthropy. President Trump pardoned Milken in 2020.

Stewart, who built a multimillion-dollar empire as a homemaking maven, served prison time for lying to investigators about a fishy stock sale.

Murdoch, the retired mogul who leveraged his media outlets to embrace right-wing leaders and views, allowed Fox News stars to promote baseless claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

Musk, the billionaire owner of SpaceX, has been accused of antisemitism and, since taking over Twitter — now known as X — reportedly allowed pro-Nazi content to proliferate on the platform, prompting companies to pull ad revenue.

Actor Stallone of Rocky fame has faced multiple allegations of sexual assault, all of which he denies and for which he's never been charged.

Stallone escorted Justice Ginsburg to the stage — as the franchise's theme song played — during the award's inaugural ceremony in 2020, as Opperman noted at the time.

At that ceremony, Justice Ginsburg stated her hopes for the award: "By honoring brave, strong and resilient women, we will prompt women and men in ever-increasing numbers to help repair tears in their local communities, the nation and the world, so that the long arc of the moral universe will continue to bend toward justice."

In an email to NPR, RBG's son singled out two recipients in his condemnation of the new criteria.

"... that is quite a step down from the original criteria and, apparently, means people like Murdoch and Musk who are antithetical to everything Mom stood for, qualify," Jim Ginsburg said. "Speaking only for myself, I would say that those who foment hatred and undermine democracy do not stand for the ideals of equality, respect, and engagement my mother strived to advance."

The Opperman Foundation has not yet responded to NPR's request for comment.

Chapter Forty-Six

Masterlist.

The next morning Chloe got up and got ready to go shopping. She did her hair and makeup and got dressed. Michael walked into the room as she was dressing.

“Have you seen how big you’ve gotten?” He sarcastically asked.

“I’m pregnant, I’m supposed to have a belly. The Dr says I’m gaining the right amount. Just baby weight, nothing more.” She replied feeling humiliated about her body once again.

“All I can say is it better come off quick after this kid is born. I don’t want a fat wife!”

“You won’t,” Chloe said quietly.

Michael left for work and Martha showed up. She couldn’t find Chloe anywhere downstairs so she hollered for her upstairs and then walked up. She found her on the bed crying.

“I don’t want to go shopping.” Chloe said

“Are you sick?” Martha asked. “I can get you back into bed if you need to.”

“No, I'm not sick. It’s something Michael said.” Chloe told her. “Let me ask you, do I look too fat for a pregnant woman? Like I’m putting on too much weight?” She asked Martha.

“Oh heavens no. I worry if you have gained enough. What does your Dr say?” Martha asked Chloe.

“He told me I’m only adding baby weight, not fat and that I’m doing fine. But Michael says I’m huge and fat, big as a house.” Chloe answered.

“Well, he knows nothing,” Martha said. “You ignore him. We know the truth. Now let’s get you a beautiful dress okay?”

“Okay,” said Chloe. “Thanks for listening, Martha.” Chloe said.

“No problem. Now come on, I’ll help you up.” Martha stated.

Chloe wanted to treat Martha to lunch so she called Michael at work. His phone in his office just rang and rang. So she called the bank phone line and asked to talk to Michael.

“He isn’t here Mrs. Conrad. He hasn’t come in yet. He called earlier and said he had an appointment and would be in later.” The teller said.

“Okay, thank you.” Chloe said.

She immediately dialed his cell phone. Something was not right.

Earlier he said he had a meeting in his office this morning. Why would he lie to her? What’s he really doing? Chloe had an idea but was hoping she was wrong. He wouldn’t have an affair on her would he? She thought.

His phone rang until the message machine picked up. She told him to call her when he got this. By the time the ladies drove a few blocks further to get to the clothing store Chloe’s phone rang. It was Michael.

“What do ya need?” He asked her abruptly.

“Michael, where are you?” Chloe asked. “You’re not at the bank. You said you had a meeting this morning.” Chloe said.

“Where I go is none of your business.” He hollered.

Chloe could hear whispers.

“Who’s with you?” She asked Michael.

“Again it’s none of your business what I do, where I go or with whom. Do you understand?”

“Yes Michael, I’m sorry.” Chloe said almost in tears again.

“Now what did you want”? He asked her again.

Quietly she stammered, “May I take Martha out for lunch today?” She asked him.

“The last thing you should do is eat. You can go but only salad for you. You don’t need anything else.” He answered.

He always was on her for her weight. If he wasn’t hitting her he was belittling her.

Chloe hung up and told Martha she could take her to lunch.

“Why does he make you grovel for everything?” asked Martha. “You shouldn’t have to almost beg or be humiliated about your weight to go to lunch. It’s upsetting.” said Martha, disgusted by Michael.

She had always thought Michael to be kind and fair before he was married. He paid her well and was always polite to her. This new Michael she didn’t know. He was a monster in Martha’s eyes.

“Well, never mind, let’s go dress shopping,” she told Chloe.

They went to the same shop Chloe got all her maternity clothes. Though Michael rarely let her out of the house to go shopping. She usually told Martha what she needed and she got it for her. Martha knew what she liked so she trusted her, and she knew Chloe’s sizes.

They went in and told the clerk they were having a dinner party and needed something appropriate for it. Something dressy. The clerk took them to a section for dressy or elegant maternity wear. While Chloe looked she kept in mind she couldn’t show to much skin or Michael would be enraged. She tried on a few but they seemed either too short or too low cut.

“Oh, Martha what do I do?” Chloe asked. “I can’t find anything.”

“Let’s keep looking,” Martha told her, "we haven't seen them all.”

She found a nice gown in blue she liked but she didn’t need a gown. Then she found a mauve colored one. Just a simple dress. It was a flared silk skirt, a lace top and a satin sash. It was tea length. It fit her nice and there was nothing showing that shouldn’t be, in Michael’s eye’s any way.

“What do you think?” She asked Martha when she came out of the dressing room.

“Oh, that color looks wonderful on you. And it fits nice”. Martha said. “But how you feel in it and about it, that's what’s important.

“I like it a lot. I think I’ll get it. I have cream colored heels I can wear with them. “ Chloe said.

They paid for the dress and some other items that Chloe needed and they went to the cafe to eat.

“Listen Chloe, you eat what you want I won’t tell.” said Martha.

But Chloe was afraid of running into Michael .

“I can’t. He may come in. And I can’t take that chance.”

Beth saw Chloe and ran over to wait on her.

“Hi! How are you? We miss you around here,” She said.

“I miss you guys too,” She told Beth.

Chloe did miss working there and having a life. It hurt that she was locked up all the time. Before she knew it she was crying.

“Are you doing okay?” Beth asked her.

“I’m fine. I’m sorry, that happens when you're pregnant, you cry a lot.” Chloe said, making up an excuse for the hurt and tears.

Martha reached across the table and held her hand.

“Soon you will have a baby. That will bring you great joy.” Martha said.

Beth hurried and took their orders and turned them in.

Martha looked at Chloe and said, "I know why you were crying and why you cry a lot.”

“You are made to stay home all the time, and I wish I could help you.”

“It’s my own doing. I could find a way to leave but he gets me back and the punishment is brutal. So I stay and obey. But I would like better for my daughter or son.” Chloe remarked.

“We’ll figure it out, somehow we will along with help from your friends you can break free.”

Beth brought their food. Chloe had a chef salad and Martha had a burger and a very large plate of fries.

“Are you going to be able to eat all those fries?” Chloe giggled.

“I got them for both of us, you’ve got your salad, you can have some fries with me. It’s okay Chloe.”

“Well maybe a few would be okay. Thanks Martha.” Chloe said.

The ladies sat and ate and Chloe ate some fries and enjoyed every one she had. They hurried and finished so they could get dinner planned and the housework done.

However before they left Beth came over and hugged Chloe.

“You know I’m here for you always. For anything. You need to get strong and leave that S.O.B. You hear me. Don’t think you’re alone because you're not.” Beth said

“I know you all are, thank you. Tell Bob and Edith hi please.” Chloe said

“Also,” Beth whispered, word has it he’s foolin’ around with his secretary. She isn’t shy about talking about it either.”

“I gotta go, love ya. Bye,” said Chloe

When they got home Chloe started to clean and Martha started on the menu for the night. After the house had been thoroughly cleaned the ladies got to taking care of supper. Martha had hours ago started the lamb but taken it out before it was completely done. She would cook it the last 5-10 minutes as everyone ate salad. They got the glazed carrots ready. Chloe made some homemade bread to have with the salad and they both cut up some potatoes to make oven roasted potatoes. For dessert Chloe made a couple of triple berry pies.

After all the prep Chloe ran upstairs to hurry and take a shower and dress. She got out blew her hair dry and sat and put on some makeup. She had some old bruises still from a week ago so she had to cover those good. When she was done with her makeup she threw her hair in a French twist and put a diamond barrette through the side to hold it, along with some Bobby pins. Finally she could put on her dress.

She felt beautiful but her smile turned to sadness because she knew her husband didn’t think so. Let him mess around, it keeps him away from me, she thought.

She hurried downstairs to see how everything was going. The bread was ready to come out and her and Martha could now make the salad. Chloe hurried to make the last touches to the dining room table and make sure it looked just right. She checked on Martha and everything was ready. The lamb was just coming out.

Chloe heard cars pulling up and prayed one of the guests was not Michael’s obnoxious, drunk friend Bryan. He made her uncomfortable. She did hope that at least Alan was there. She would have someone to talk to.

She walked to the door, straightened her hair in the mirror nearby and opened the door.

“Good evening everyone,” she said pleasantly. “Welcome, come on in. If you want to take a seat at the table I’ll just be a minute with supper.”

She was heartbroken to see Bryan. But no Alan. She pulled Michael aside.

“You said six, there are five, who is missing and how long do I hold supper?” She asked him a bit annoyed.

“There will be six, Alan is running late tonight. Just hold supper till he gets here! It’s not hard to figure out Chloe!” He snapped.

She came out with the salad and fresh bread first. And some wine of course. She had chosen an Italian red wine tonight. She went around and poured everyone a glass, as her husband made no move to do it. As she finished pouring the wine, the doorbell rang.

“I’ll see to that. Go ahead and start please,” she said.

“Martha, how is everything going?“ Chloe asked.

“It’s all ready when y’all are. Go enjoy your meal.” Martha told her.

She sat down and started to eat her salad when Michael spoke up.

“This salad is all my wife gets tonight. She’s gotten too big to eat anything else. It’s salads for you for a while babe.” He laughed, along with everyone else, except Bryan’s wife and Alan.

Chloe was humiliated. She went to the kitchen to help bring out the food, tears in her eyes.

Archangel Gabriel (2007 movie Gabriel) - His actor died tragically at a very young age. I thought his performance was amazing and I wouldn't want to use any other FC, but at the same time, I just feel it's inappropriate to use images of him, out of respect for his family. I actually had an OC that I used him for and have since changed to another actor because I felt uncomfortable using his images going forward.

Alice Abernathy (Resident Evil, Anderson films) - As much as I adore her, I don't feel I understand her well enough nor could I get her "voice" down well enough to write her to my own standards.

Fran (Final Fantasy XII) - I'm not sure I could write her well enough, but also she's in a totally different circle of characters than all my other FFXII muses, so she'd feel a bit isolated and extraneous if I added her to that blog. Also, she's kindof joined at the hip to Balthier, whom I know I could never write properly in a million years, heh.

Eyal Lavine (TV show Current Affairs) - I've wanted to write him for years now, but with certain things going on in the news, writing an Israeli Mossad agent just isn't the best thing to do right now, I feel. I would constantly worry about offending people or being dragged into political conversations relevant to real world events that I really don't want to get into on my blogs.

Yuna (Final Fantasy X) - To bring her to this site would be an impossible amount of new added activity for me. The FFX fandom is a lot larger than FFXII and I'd be afraid of too much activity or even those with muses from other FF games wanting to write with her. I just can't add a popular character right now. if anything, I need to be downsizing, heh.

The town of Silent Hill (Silent Hill game franchise, 2006 movie Silent Hill, 2012 movie Silent Hill: Revelation) - It's just too complicated and would require too much startup time and effort for me to manage right now. But I am keeping it in mind for the future!

ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴡʀɪᴛᴛᴇɴ ʙᴇғᴏʀᴇ, ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ɴᴏᴛ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ᴀɢᴀɪɴ (ᴀɴᴅ ᴡʜʏ)

Ned Stark (ASoIaF book series / GoT TV show) - Ned only survived Season 1 (actually, technically, he didn't even survive that). So much happened in subsequent Seasons, and now we've got HotD too. I stopped reading after the third book and stopped watching after the third Season, so... I'm way behind on the world, the lore, the characters, the countries, the Houses, etc. I wouldn't feel that I'm coming from enough of a place of knowledge to write Ned, even though I really adore him and would love to. And someone like him, who was in positions of power, would have that knowledge, he'd know about the major and minor Houses and the politics and the history, etc., so it would affect my portrayal of him to not know all of that myself.

Ygritte (ASoIaF book series / GoT TV show) - Kindof the same problem as Ned, although Ygritte survived a bit longer... but also I'm just not sure how relevant she'd be to most characters other people in the fandom would write. As a wildling, she was somewhat isolated from much of the plot and other characters of the world. Also, I'm afraid of Jon Snows everywhere just wanting to ship with her, heh, since I really hated that ship, personally.

The White Queen (Resident Evil, Anderson films) - Her FC is a child, and as much as I liked the character, the way I developed her was to add an OC origin muse for her that used the same actress as an FC. After a certain point, I just felt like I was doing something wrong by using a child FC and didn't feel comfortable doing it anymore.

ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴡʀɪᴛᴛᴇɴ ʙᴇғᴏʀᴇ, ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ᴀɢᴀɪɴ (ᴀɴᴅ ᴡʜʏ)

Luther West (Resident Evil, Anderson films) - I liked Luther, he was pretty cool, and since I write a lot of other RE muses, he'd fit right in. The only reason I stopped writing him was because hardly anyone was interested in him, so it became too much to keep maintaining his blog if no one wanted to write with him.

The Creature (2004 mini-series Frankenstein) - I've always liked Adam, I read the original Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and I've seen various movies and mini-series on the subject. I like this specific version because the actor who played him is a favorite of mine, but also it was fairly faithful to the book as well. The reason I stopped was because I felt I wasn't writing him up to my own standards, but I'd be willing to give it another try.

In the beginning, the Shelbys and the Changrettas were not enemies.

They weren’t friends, but they weren’t enemies.

Occasionally Polly fucked Luca, the boys would go out for drinks with Angel and you and Ada would get nice clothes from Audrey’s nieces while she and mama talked.

But then things changed, Polly got married to Michael Gray after Luca was banished to New York, the boys had a falling out with Angel and you and Ada had to take care of Finn after mama died and papa left.

Before you knew it you were in your twenties and accepting an invitation to some Changretta’s wedding just to avoid being rude.

No need to piss off the wops, Tommy had said after ordering you to go by your lonesome while he pines for the mousy bitch who nearly got them all killed.

“Long time no see.” Luca said as he tried making conversation with you.

You were in a foul mood, but the Italians had great food and drinks and maybe, just maybe one of them would take you to their place and return you with a limp later tomorrow.

Would it be too weird to fuck your aunt’s former boyfriend?

It was only a six-year age difference, surely it wasn’t that bad. And Polly had moved on and you hoped he had to.

“Nearly a decade, Luca. John could’ve been a grandfather had you taken longer.” You joke and you feel like the stupid teenager who used to have the biggest crush on Polly’s one time boyfriend.

“or you could’ve been married.” He adds and she tries not to choke on her wine.

One thing leads to another and now you are running off to New York just to see him.

Your brothers don’t know anything about this, no they just think you’ve decided to go on holiday with a friend.

A friend with money and connections and great skill with his cock.

“We could get married, amore, our families aren’t enemies. If you become my wife, our families could rule America and England together.” He says as the two of you lounge naked in tangled silk sheets.

You already lie and say you are husband and wife, why not make it true?

“They wouldn’t agree, you know that, my love.” You say knowing it will never happen.

“I could do some pest control and give them the Rat’s head on a platter, will that make them agree, tesoro?” he asks kissing you again.

As tempting as Grace’s justified murder is, you know that would make Tommy say no.

He loved her.

Just like Nathaniel in the Sandman loved Olympia thinking she was real.

It was pathetic really.

“No, you know how she crowed about Tommy still being in love with her last night. Tommy’s always been a fool when it comes to love and fucking.” You shook your head hating this turn of conversation.

Besides. You were free and would remain so. You loved Luca, but you were never going to be a man’s wife.

That had been why you went to the woman who Polly knows instead of telling Luca you had gotten pregnant during that night a year ago.

“Aren’t we all fools in love.” He said with that stupid grin.

Maybe you are, you think, I am different.

You were the fabulous Miss Shelby, the one who doesn’t suffer from the Achilles heel your siblings have.

Arthur had Linda, Tommy had Grace, Ada had Freddie, John had Martha and now Esme and you would be damned if you followed suit.

This way was better.

It’s 1922 when Luca suprises you at the Derby.

“He doesn’t love you anymore, he’s marrying a woman named May Carlton.” You tell Grace a truth Tommy told you this morning.

Tommy was planning on courting May in truth, he’d asked for advice and you told him he’d find no better woman than her.

That night with Grace was a slip up, a fuck up he’d never repeat, or so he told you after you asked about that.

Grace MacMillan needed to woman up and accept defeat for his sake.

“You are lying!” the blonde cries and takes a swing at you only to be stopped by Luca.

“Why would my wife be lying to you? Thomas Shelby would be a fucking fool to marry scum like you, now go back to New York and pretend this never happened.” He stood at your side and stared her down as he chewed on his toothpick.

“I need to hear it from him.” She demands only for Luca to say the damning words.

“Too bad, he’s been arrested and won’t be coming out of there for weeks.” Luca built up on a lie.

Once Grace leaves in a mess of anger and tears, you are reminded of that question you refuse to answer.

“I think wife was too much, Luca.” You tell him as the two of you walk away together.

“I want to marry you, that is why I came here. Thomas can’t say no of he sees how happy I make you.” He is adamant, thinking that what you need is time.

No man respects your decision to remain free. You love your freedom more than you love Luca.

And he refuses to accept that.

He will never accept that; you hear Polly’s voice in the back of your mind.

Its 1925 when you accept an engagement from him.

He is not allowed at Tommy’s wedding and you are relieved when everything goes wrong.

Angel started seeing Lizzy and this had made a mess because Tommy still held a torch for her.

No woman was enough for Tommy, not Grace, not Lizzie, not even sweet May.

Tommy set the boys loose on the Changretta’s territory and now you wonder if you should just send Luca the diamond ring he gave you on your birthday instead of telling Tommy you were engaged to him.

“You should’ve told them!” Lizzie hissed in pain as her dreams with Angel crumble to dust. “He would’ve let me go if you had told them about Luca!”

After three months of thinking about it you decide to tell him at the opening of May’s charity.

“I need to tell you something, Tommy.” You wear Luca’s ring on your finger as May talks to John and Esme across the ballroom.

Everyone lived May, who couldn’t?

You only hoped your family would accept Luca as well.

“Is this about this mystery man you’ve been with all this time?” he said pointing to the ring.

“Yeah, I’m going to marry him and I think it’s about time you knew who he is.” You begin only to be interrupted by a gun shot and shouting.

The man shouts in Italian, but he isn’t one. You know the Italians wouldn’t do this, not when they know your marriage will fix the issues with the family and let Angel and Lizzie leave tonight.

“For Angel!” the man shouts and aims at John.

But it’s not John he hits, no, it’s May.

May who could never hate anyone. May who brings out the good in Tommy and doesn’t judge any of your like Grace did.

Its when you see the sickening smile on the Russian bitch that you realize who sent the gunman.

The Sandman is a short story by E.T.A Hoffman in 1817 about Nathaniel who is obsesses with this man named Coppola whom he believes is a monster called the Sandman (turns out to be right,but no one believes him) , Nathaniel also falls in love with his ideal woman, his teacher Spallanzani's daughter, Olympia, after dumping his ex ,Clara, who he felt too artificial (being a normal woman with a good head on her shoulders)only to find out that Olympia is a human looking doll who is cold to the touch, described as dull and mechanical bybeveryyone else. Olympia can play and sing and only say ah ha in converstion and listens to his boring shit with interest cuz she is in fact a fucking robot and not a real human. Nathaniel then goes insane after discovering she is a doll created by his tecaher and Coppola/Coppelius.

Still Single / Heathen Disco 2020 End of Year Recap

I guess I’m back! I started gingerly dipping back over into Tumblr to publish some reviews as a means of cutting through all the bondage photos and anime screencaps and people still living on Tumblrs (shout out to anyone still Tumblin', it's alright). I also redoubled my efforts to do great radio shows, and that seems to bother some of you enough to unsubscribe, but I'm feeling great about all that. If you wanna hear those shows, you can go to Mixcloud and listen to your hearts' content. Those 5-6 reviews on here actually turned up worthwhile music in my PO box, so thanks to those who submitted.

This was gonna be the year I reintroduced myself to the world. Don't make plans like that. Things are a lot better now than I thought they'd be, and the time I burnt up on movies and self-reflection this year was probably more needed than another DJ gig or whatever. Radio sustained me, I will freely admit, and finding records out in the wild once shops reopened was really killer too.

i was soo excited to post this cause i really love Christmas imagines with all the family and cute things. and also drama cause we are talking bout Shelby family here.

Christmas it is a wonderful holiday, your favorite actually.

Family, in this case your husband's family, means everything to you.

Your parents? You are not in a very good terms with them, not after you married John bloody Shelby.

But they all together in your house? Also with the kids...You know it wasn't a good idea.

Hell, everyone fuckin know it.

Every year for Christmas and New Eve you all had a family meeting at Polly's house, Thomas's or Garrison as usual, but this year John wanted to host both of them. This year he bought the house you and him always wanted, big enough for you two and five tireless kids - four with his first wife Martha and the toddler with you. Knowing that your relationship with your parents it's not the best, John wanted you to invite them too. After three years of marriage, four of relationship and a child together they should accept the idea by now.

You were and still are very skeptical at this idea, but somehow excited. You want to make everything perfect and John understood why are you so perfectionist about it. You and your parents didn't spend a Christmas together since you started dating him and you don't regret it at all, but he is feeling guilty. Even if he knows that his family is your family now and they liked you for the first time anyway.

- John? You said in a questioning tone while putting your pearl earrings on.

- Ya? He was getting dressed with a nice black suite who looked very good on him. His hair was still messy for the things you did before and you smiled, remembering with not a shame his head between your legs. You needed that since you already feel panicked and John knew it, wanting to pleasure and relax his girl every time. He would spend the whole damn Christmas evening like this if he could. But you had commitments.

- No business tonight.

He smirked, but he was focused on the tie. You stand up from your chair still in your robe and you help him with the tie knot, making him look into your eyes when you're done.

- I'm serious, John. No business, no fighting, no drugs. Fuck, no fighting. You repeat knowing how Shelby men can get. You know too well.

He softly kiss your lips, pulling you closer to him and whispering.

- I will make sure the lads will behave. Now...How much time do we have?

Thinking at the fact that your makeup it's not finished yet and you are not dressed, even if you are the host, you answered.

- We don't. My parents are comin'. I can't be late.

Ten minutes later you slowly walked around the long table in your red long dress, making sure everything was in its place. You usually had two maids, one for the house and a nanny, but tonight you have four and John paid them double. The Christmas tree in the middle of the dinning room was huge and you remembered with a little laugh how frustrated your husband was because he had to decorate it with you and the kids for two hours and a half.

- They are here! Katie shout, excited to play with the others Shelby kids and she ran to the door, almost before the maid that opened the door for them.

- Ey, if it's not the most beautiful sister-in-law I ever had! Arthur greet you with a big smile and he hugs you, you doing the same with Linda and Billy, who were next to him. And also with Michael and Gina, her belly growing already.

- Oh, really? Lizzie raised an eyebrow and you hugged her and the little Ruby, who quickly managed to get to Katie. They are so sweet, playing innocently with their dolls.

Thomas looked at you as you greeted each other with smiles on your faces and Charlie was right next to him in a nice grey suit; he was so shy when you hugged him, deciding to do the same with his father as well. You know Tommy don't really like hugs, but he pulled his arms around you as well. Ada and Polly are right next to them and you kissed their cheeks.

- I'm lookin' at you and I already know you are going to be pregnant again in less than two months, Polly smirked and you blushed a little. I can see it already.

Ada chuckled and she looked at you with a warm glare.

- You look so beautiful, [Y/N]. You heard a little voice and you kissed Karl's cheek; he's such a good and smart little boy.

- And happy. You're glowing, sister. Ada speaks as she entered the house, followed by Finn, Isiah, Charlie and Curly who kissed your hand, making you laugh and try to stop him, so you could hug him as you did with everyone. Your kids greet everyone as well, happily and excited to play with the toys they had in their separate room, two nannies watching over the kids.

- Too bad you're my sister-in-law, Finn said joking and Isiah poked him with his elbow.

- Too bad she is mine, brother? John hugged you from behind as you were talking with the "little" Blinders and he pulled you to him by your waist, looking for a moment in other side for his kids.

Finn raised his hands in self defense and you all laughed, but when they walked away to get a drink, you turned to face John's beautiful face.

- You are fuckin gorgeous, love. The most beautiful woman Birmingham has ever seen. He whisper and slowly place kisses all over your face, that calming you down for a moment.

- Thank you love, you said smiling a little but you are nervous.

- They will come. Calm down for a bit, okay? I'm gonna get a drink. Want one?

He kissed your lips, but you declined his offer as you pulled him to your lips one more.

- Mrs Shelby? A few moments later a maid interrupted you as you talked with the girls, all standing by the fire and waiting for your parents. Eric is crying.

Your heart melts seeing your youngest child in tears, but as soon as you grabbed him he stop and he start giggling at his dad wanting his attention, but he was smoking and drinking at the table with the rest of the men, they all loudly talking and laughing. But even in that chaos in the dinning room, John's eyes managed to follow his son, seeing him crying and now he is smiling at the little baby, who is indeed he in miniature. He loves all of his kids the same, but right now Eric melts his heart and that's probably because he is more present now than he was with the other kids.

The maid announced you that you're parents are here and you can feel your hands tightened around Eric.

- They are here, you muttered to the girls as you slowly stand up and John did the same, following you to the door. A good vibe was coming from the dinning room as there was music and laughing, the kids were happily playing in their rooms, but you can feel yourself so strained.

- I'm here for you, love, always. He whispered to you and lovely kissing your lips, but Eric grabbed him by his jacket as he pulled away. Come ere boy.

You placed Eric in John's arms and opened the door, meeting the familiar, yet so unfamiliar, faces of your parents. They never been here before, they never met Eric, Katie, William, Edward or Joe. They just didn't know anything about you all this time and you nothing about them and it didn't bothered up.

- Hello mother, father. You force a smile and John touch your rear with the palm of his hand, knowing you need him to keep you calm.

- Welcome! This is our son, Eric Shelby. John said as the toddler was looking up at his parents and sometime at the strangers in front of him as they enter the house. His eyes are big and blue, his hair blonde and he have pink chubby cheeks.

-I'm glad to see you again, [Y/N]. It's been a while, your father talk only with you ignoring what John said.

- I'm happy to see you too, you reply but you mostly look at your mother. Polly has been a mother to you this time, but you look exactly like the woman that gave you life and when she hugged you couldn't pull away.

- He is adorable. And you two look happy together, she observed and she grabbed Eric's little hands. She even wanted to take him in her arms, but he started crying, not wanting to be taken away from his daddy. Thank you for taking care of her all this time, John.

Your father didn't seemed to happy to hear this, but you mother hugged John and you thought that maybe this was a start.

- As we wait for the food, I want to say something to you...To all of you.

John grabbed your hand and you both stand up with Eric in your arms as he was playing with your wedding ring, not paying much attention to anyone, even if everyone was now looking at you. The Shelby's were smiling, you parents not much.

- Let's hear you Johnny boy! Arthur screamed making everyone laughs, even you two.

- Carry on, Tommy smiled at you and you look confused.

- When I lost Martha, my first wife and the mother to my first children, I thought I will never be truly happy again. I thought that I will marry just for the sake of the business, but this one ere...She really bloody loves me. He said with a bashful smile on his lips as he gesture towards you.

- This one, [Y/N]...Made me realize that everything happens for a reason. I may be a fucker..

- You really are brother! Finn was the one who screamed now and he throw a table napkin at his brother who ignored his gesture as he was trying to find the better words. You tried to not look at your parents, theirs glare will annoy you.

- Ya, I know I am and she knows too, but she loves me anyway. Just as she loves this family. We may be fuckers...We may have fights, who usually end up worse than at any other families...But we will never let each other down, don't we.

- It's in our gipsy blood, Polly proudly smiled as she puffed on her cigarette and you smiled to her. You are a gipsy too and you are proud about it, but your parents aren't.

- We don't have this kind of nights too often and we don't openly talk to each other too often...But I know we love each other, John licked his lips and he looked at you. Your smile was big and proud as he took Eric in his arms.

- And I know I love you, [Y/N]. And I will protect you with my life.

In your stomach you feel the same thing you felt all this years with John; the same stomach knots that you'll never get rid off next to him and that was all that mattered. Your family was screaming and shouting as you kissed with smiles on your faces, remembering the night when John asked you to marry him. Eric screams as well in John's arms and you and your husband chuckled, knowing you found love and somehow peace.

- We are the Peaky fookin' Blinders, John screamed with a proud grin and he takes Charlie's Blinder cap and he puts it on Eric who was confused but chuckled at his dad. You had happy tears in your eyes and as you wiped them away you saw your mother and father disapproval looks; you looked away.

- We are Gods! Arthur cheers with his glass of whisky in his hand and Tommy pulled the smoke out before talking with a grin.

- Not yet brother.

The first dish was placed in front of everyone, but your mother wasn't at the table anymore. You stand up, John's eyes following away as you talk with your father.

- Where's mum?

- Upstairs. She couldn't stand seeing what her daughter became...With this pikeys...And you call them bloody family? he mocks you and you growl. The kids weren't there and before you can think twice you grab his collar and pull him to you, not afraid at all.

- Listen to me father, you talk in the same mock tone with your face close to his; Isiah was next to your father, but no one moved as they listen to your words. You say one more bad thing about my people and I will get you the fuck out my damn house. You are here only because John insisted so shut your mouth. Your old man for sure hates your guts right now, ya know? He was proud to be a gipsy.

You heard chuckles at the table, but you didn't stand there more. You walked out of the dinning room, John following you just to shut.

- Ya need backup?

- No love. I have to handle this on my own.

You found your mother in the children room talking with them and this wasn't something wrong, but you smelled something so you just stand by the door to listen a little.

- You're old enough now to know about your father's business or it's not the time yet?

- What business? William your oldest son asked, not having a damn idea. He's just ten years old. You forced yourself to listen more.

- Okay kids, listen to me. I am your grandma and I want what's the best for you, but-...

- Why we didn't met you before? Karl asked as he was playing chess with Charlie. You smile proudly.

- [Y/N] never allowed me to. What I wanted to say was that...You know kids, your fathers are bad people. They are hurting innoc-...

You can't stand it anymore.

- Kids, have you all ate? You enter the room and the maids right after you. The kids food was served early and you smile at them; your heart just melts seeing them all together.

- Mommy, can we eat dessert now? Edward asked you, pulling by your dress to get your attention as you sent daggers with your eyes to your mother.

- Course baby. Veronica is bringing the dessert to you now. If you all want somethin, you told her okay?

They all nodded and you look at your mother who was too quiet now after she just told a lot of shit to kids. You pull her into a guest bedroom and after you close the door, you clench your fists.

- You crazy bitch! Wha was that? You trying not to scream, but you can't help it.

- How did you call me, [Y/N]? She was shocked, but before you can do anything, she slammed your over the cheek. Your head remain still for a moment and you bit your lip.

- I called you...Crazy bitch cause that's what you bloody are! What kind of mother told to innocent kids what they parents do for livin? They are toddlers!

- A mother that wants the best for her blind daughter! He spit at you with her voice full of venom and you mock her when you talk.

- Don't you dare give that shit to me.

She puff and when she starts talking again, she have a rotten smile on her face.

- But please tell me...What kind of mother are you, [Y/N]? What mother accept her kid living under the same roof with some criminals? With another woman's children? You really are this dumb? Leave this gipsy behind, take Eric with you and come livin with us. That's all I want and I know you will be happier.

- You are wrong...That's all you can say. You are so angry that you want to hit her for the shit she talks.

- Look at me and listen cause I am right to say that. If you don't leave now, John will do it first. When you will be all alone, you will come on your knees at us, [Y/N]. Listen to me.

You look away but you can feel the fire in your whole body, taking control over your mind. You had enough.

- Get the fuck out of my house. Now.

- [Y/N] don-...

That's all it takes for you to lose it.

You take out the knife that it's always on your leg under your dress and you grab your mother's chin, the knife pressing on her neck as you pushed her out of the door and on the stairs.

- Walk or I will cut your fuckin throat for talking shit about my husband.

The music was still playing in the dinning room, but you heard other noises as well. You heard breaking glasses, other screams and growls as you walked in, still holding your mother. You gasped when you saw John with a bloody lip, but everyone's attention was now on you. Your father was holding back by Finn, Isiah and Charlie and he looked out of his minds. He has a broken nose and a bloody mouth.

- How dumb you two are hitting on a Shelby in their damn house? You laugh and put the knife away. John is in shock as he came closer to you, not bothered by the blood.

- I thought you will be mad cause I hit your old man...I didn't wanted to..

- I'm not, you smile at John and look now at your parents. Get the fuck out of my house and you better pray you don't meet me ever again.

- [Y/N], we are still your family. Don't forget this, you will need us. Your father threaten you. Charlie, Isiah and Finn grab them to take them out, but they waited for your permission. John hand was now around your waist as he looked at you, waiting for you reply just as everyone.

- You're wrong. My family is right ‘ere. Leave.

John smirked proudly at his wife, just as everyone did. Tommy, Arthur and Polly are surprised that you protected them that fierce, that you care this much.

- Ey you truly are from this family, don't you [Y/N]. Arthur handed you the whole bottle of whisky and you took a swing, smiling after.

- I really fuckin am.

John hugged you from behind again, no more blood on his lip as he place kisses on the side of your neck, even if everyone was now looking at you two.

- Christmas with the Shelbys. You never know what to expect, Ada chuckled and the maids come in to clean all the mess.

You laugh at her words and drink again, John took a swing too from the bottle in your hands. He pulled you closer, you still holding the bottle as you reach your hands up around his neck, your foreheads and noses touching.

- You have me at your pinky toe, love. I don't know what your mother told you, but you don't have to worry about me ever leaving you. Cause I won't.

- I know, you smile and you peck his lips, before slowly pulling away to talk again. I'm head over heels in love with you, John.

Your heard sniffing in the back and you laughed when John wanted to stop them, you hold him still, not wanting to let go of his neck. He grabbed your waist and you two turned around to see your family; Michael and Arthur are with their noses on the snow, Tommy is having a loudly funny talk with the other men and the girls are all drinking and dancing barefoot.

- I said no fuckin cocaine! John shouted while laughing, you still holding on his neck as you did the same, drinking from the bottle again.

- And I said no fuckin fighting.

- That's quite impossible for us, love.

The Alienist:

Favorite character: SARA HOWARD YOU ARE THE MOST AMAZING WOMAN I’VE EVER MET PLEASE MARRY ME

Second favorite character: I literally love all of the 808 crew so much, I’m gonna say Kreizler cause he’s so cool.

Least favorite character: I’d say Libby Hatch but it’s a lie cause she’s SUCH an interesting character (I STILL DON’T FORGIVE HER FOR...THAT), so maybe...idk, Moore’s journalist friends? Or the mobster guy?

The character I’m most like: Y’know? I’m probably Lucius! I mean, I’m studying forensics and I’m very awkward but still pretty awesome, so yeah, gonna say Lucius fkgjfk.

Favorite paiting: I literally don’t ship anyone? The Alienist is about the Power of Friendship (I lied, I ship Sara/the painter lady from the second book)

Least favorite pairing: (don’t kill me but i don’t go for kre1zler/m00re, they’re best friends goals for me)

Favorite moment: LITERALLY SO MANY. SO MANY. These books are about gruesome murders but they have some of the most hilarious comedy bits in all of media. Still, I think the moment that stays with me the most is Sara’s speech, hold on I’ll look for it:

Superman: From Cleveland to Krypton

The Man of Steel's Jewish roots

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the two ordinary young men who created an extraordinary hero, lived 12 blocks apart from each other in Cleveland. The pair collaborated on stories for their high school newspaper and shared a passion for science fiction and pulp comics. It was the 1930s, and comic book publishing was in its infancy. Like many young Jews with artistic aspirations, Siegel and Shuster yearned to break into this fledgling industry. Comic book publishers actively hired Jews, who were largely excluded from more “legitimate” illustration work.

The 1930s were also, arguably, the most anti-Semitic period in American history. Nazi sympathizer Fritz Kuhn of the German-American Bund led legions of rabid followers on marches through many cities, including Siegel and Shuster’s hometown. Radio superstar Father Charles E. Coughlin of the pro-fascist Christian Front was one of the nation’s most powerful men. And Ivy League colleges kept the number of Jewish students to a minimum, while country clubs and even entire neighborhoods barred Jews altogether.

So Siegel and Shuster began submitting treatments under the pseudonym Bernard J. Kenton, just to be on the safe side. Throughout the Great Depression, the two boys scraped together every penny they could just to cover postage. Shuster sketched on cheap brown wrapping paper.

From these humble beginnings, Shuster and Siegel carved out a character that embodied their adolescent frustrations, served as a mouthpiece of the oppressed, and became an American icon. Many years later, Jerry Siegel recalled the birth of Superman:

The story would begin with you as a child on far-off planet Krypton. Like the others of that world, you had super-powers. The child’s scientist-father was mocked and denounced by the Science Council. They did not believe his claim that Krypton would soon explode from internal stresses. Convinced that his prediction was valid, the boy’s father had been constructing a model rocket ship. As the planet began to perish, the baby’s parents knew its end was close. There was not space enough for three people in the small model craft. They put the baby into it. The mother chose to remain on the doomed planet with the man she loved, and die with him. Tearfully, hoping that their baby boy would survive, they launched the craft toward the planet Earth. Shortly, Krypton exploded and its millions of inhabitants were destroyed.

The idea of for this new superhero came to them in 1934. It would take another four years before Superman would be transformed from a feverish dream to a full-fledged hero. In 1938, Detective Comics, Inc., was looking for a character to launch its new magazine, Action Comics. They paid young Siegel and Shuster $130 for the first 13 pages of Superman. Action Comics #1 came out in June of that year. The issue sold out, and a star was drawn.

In a brilliant stroke, Shuster and Siegel gave their superhuman hero a secret identity, that of an all-too human reporter, the meekly mannered Clark Kent. Practically speaking, this notion of “double identity” allowed for almost endless storyline twists and thematic depth. On another level, it added considerably to the “mythology” that would eventually accrue around this fictional crime fighter. Clark’s shyness undermines his courtship of his co-worker, the gutsy Lois Lane. Siegel and Shuster later admitted that the shy Clark struggling for a date reflected their own social challenges.

Superman #1 was published in the summer of 1939. Across the Atlantic, in Germany, Adolph Hitler was exploiting his nation’s economic and social ills by scapegoating Jews. Living in a country that had stripped them of their citizenship yet perversely obstructed their exit, German Jews resorted to desperate measures. Just as the baby Superman was sent away from Krypton to avoid the mass destruction of his people, many Jewish children were sent on the Kindertransports to seek safety with families in England.

After the attacks on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, America entered World War II, and so did Superman. In Siegel and Shuster’s comic, Clark Kent tries to enlist in the Armed Forces, but he fails the routine medical examination,. Clark accidentally uses his X-ray vision to read the next room’s eye chart. Distraught, he muses, “I’ve got the most perfect body the world has ever known, and through a sad trick of fate, the army turns me down as hopeless!” This feeling of desperation and despondency was felt across the country. As news of the Nazis’ murderous Holocaust plan emerged, American Jews felt utterly powerless to help their European brethren.

Word of Superman and his ethnic undertones did not escape the enemy’s notice in real life. Josef Goebbels, the Nazi minister of propaganda, denounced Superman as a Jew. In April 1940, Das Schwarze Korps, the weekly newspaper of the Nazi S.S., attacked the comic and its Jewish writers:

Jerry Siegel, an intellectually and physically circumcised chap who has his headquarters in New York. . . The inventive Israelite named this pleasant guy with an overdeveloped body and underdeveloped mind “Superman..

Here were Nazis wringing their hands over a cartoon character cooked up by a couple of boys across the sea. Yet this ideologically driven rant actually touched on something vital–the importance of Shuster and Siegel’s Jewish heritage.

Superman #1 begins with a brief synopsis of the hero’s escape from Krypton, which draws heavily on Jewish sources. Superman’s journey closely reflects the story of Moses. Like the people of Krypton who faced total annihilation, the Israelites of biblical Egypt faced the murder of their male offspring. To ensure her son’s survival, Jochebed places Moses in a reed basket and sets him afloat on the Nile. Her desperate decision is clearly echoed by Superman’s father, Jor-El, who launches the little rocket ship containing his son into outer space.

Moses and Superman are eventually discovered and raised in foreign cultures. Baby Moses is found by Batya, the daughter of Pharaoh, and raised in the royal palace. Superman is found by Jonathan and Martha Kent in a Midwestern cornfield and given the name Clark. From the onset, both Batya and the Kents realize that these foundling boys are extraordinary. Superman leads a double life as the stuttering, spectacle-wearing reporter whose true identity no one suspects. In the same way, for his own safety, Moses kept his Israelite roots hidden for a time.

Superman’s original name on Krypton also reveals biblical underpinnings. Superman is named Kal-El and his father Jor-El. The suffix “El” is one of the ancient names for God, used throughout the Bible. It is also found in the names of great prophets like Samuel and Daniel and angels such as Michael and Gabriel. We may never know whether Siegel and Shuster were aware of these precise Hebrew translations; nevertheless, the name could not be more apt.

While the invincible Superman may have stood the test of time, the lives of his creators were not as triumphant. From the beginning, Siegel and Shuster were so busy they had to hire assistants, but while DC Comics was making millions, Superman’s creators weren’t sharing the wealth. The two men were paid a salary, but their initial payment back in 1938 had included all rights. They had sold their percentage of a goldmine for $130 and were eventually fired from their own creation.

Lawsuits followed. None were successful. Siegel and Shuster tried and failed to create new characters. Their names were familiar only to comic book aficionados. Then, rumors began to circulate in the early 1970s that a big budget Superman movie was in the works. DC Comics received $3 million for the rights to film Superman. Once again, Siegel and Shuster were left out of the equation.

This time, the two men tried a new approach. They bypassed their lawyers and went straight to the media. Newspapers across the world picked up the story of Siegel and Shuster, the poor boys who’d created an American icon, made DC Comics rich — and were now penniless and forgotten. That Shuster was now going blind added to the story’s poignancy.

Legally, DC Comics owed Siegel and Shuster nothing, but bad publicity was costing the company dearly. A financial settlement was reached, and the names “Siegel and Shuster” appeared in Superman comics once more. In 2006, Superman returned to the big screen, and not a moment too soon–in today’s world, we need a hero more than ever.
